Editor’s Note: Following last year’s historic election which pitted a woman candidate, Hillary Clinton, against Donald Trump, our Claudia Aragon thought it timely to take a look at women in politicas over the years and see just what impace women and their fight for the right to vote have had on our nation. byo Claudia Aragon
We as a nation found ourselves in yet another presidential election. The campaigns for that election did not disappoint in their theatrics. There had been the usual mudslinging and finger pointing on both sides. The ‘he said, she said’ rhetoric.
No matter what your opinion or political party, I think we can agree that it’s important we all had our chance to get out there and cast our vote. We needed to make our voices heard and our choices made. If we didn’t speak up we had no one to blame but ourselves.
As a nation we are still in our infancy and every measure of freedom we have and the rights we are privy to, have been hard fought by men, women and children. Battles fought at home and abroad by blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians, gays, straight, Catholics, Protestants, Jews, etc. The list goes on. With that said, I felt it was important to write this article about one particular battle for the right to vote. Even though we had a female candidate and many feel it was unlike any other election in our recent history, it was not, however, the first time a woman has run for president as a major candidate. Before the election I was asked if I was going to vote in the Presidential election. I quickly answered, yes, of course. I’ve voted in every election, local and Presidential, since I was old enough to vote. There have been times my choices on propositions as well as politicians have been wrong, or my choices never quite made the cut. That fact of life is true for everyone who’s ever voted. Like the saying goes…if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. In order to make a difference we have to try. There are no guarantees of immediate change or success, and the process can be tedious at best. It’s just important that we all get out there and try to make the changes we feel are important, by exercising our right to vote. After all, if we don’t strive to effect a change, someone else will, and it may not be the right choice for us, or our families.
It was just before I turned twenty and the Presidential election of 1976 was just around the corner. I was living in Yuba County, just north of Sacramento and I remember the excitement felt among me and my friends. It would be the first time we would all be old enough to vote for President. During the previous presidential campaign in 1972, we had all worked at various campaign headquarters … some for McGovern and some for Nixon. for Shirley Chisholm. Not only was she a woman, but she was black. Some people felt it could work to her advantage, while others felt it was two strikes against her. She surprised everyone with an outstanding total of 152 votes at the Democratic National Convention, but lost the nomination to George McGovern. Even though George McGovern won the nomination, he lost the Presidential election to Richard Nixon. We were all still too young to vote, but busied ourselves by putting out door hangers and handing out flyers, trying to drum up voters. A few of us, myself included, manned (or should I say womanned) the phones and stuffed mailers. The signing of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, was a big topic of conversation with us and we were actively trying to find new ways to give the female vote a voice.

Ironically, women could run for President before they could vote for one. The only exception to the rule, due in part to their status in the community at large, were women of means. The women who owned property and/or had amassed a great deal of wealth. The first official record of a woman running for President was Victoria Woodhull in 1872. She was a member of the Equal Rights Party and her Vice Presidential choice was running mate Frederick Douglass. In 1884, when Abigail Scott Duniway rejected her nomination by the National Equal Rights Party, Belvia Ann Lockwood was given the nomination instead. Lockwood ran for President twice. The first time in 1884, with Marietta Stow as her running mate and the second time in 1888, with Alfred Love, who was later replaced by Charles Stuart as her vice presidential running mate.

After the Civil War there had been increased agitation among the women regarding their right to go to the polls. In 1869, the 15th Amendment was being signed into law, which would give newly freed black men the right to vote. When asked for their endorsements, the feminists were split. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were opposed, refusing to sign the endorsement, as it did not include giving women their right to go to the polls as well. They formed the National Woman Suffrage Association, which campaigned for and attacked the issues for women’s rights at the federal level. This included giving property rights to married women. Other feminist suffragists, including Lucy Stone and Julia Ward Howe, endorsed the 15th Amendment, arguing that once the black man had the vote, the women’s vote would soon follow. Both groups were passionate in the beliefs and pursuit of their goals for women’s rights. In 1890, the two groups merged under the new name, National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA). During that same year Wyoming became a state and was the first state with a general women’s suffrage, aka vote, written into law. In 1869, while Wyoming was still a territory, the women held the right to vote and that right was not rescinded after statehood was granted. As the founding women of the NAWSA began to age, the leadership roles changed hands and in 1915, Carrie Chapman Catt became the association’s president. Of all the women in the organization, she was the most politically aware, looking for legal and nonthreatening ways to win the fight for women’s rights. That was not to be the case with Alice Paul. She had a more strong arm approach and was forced to resign from the NAWSA. Not one to have her efforts thwarted, she organized and formed the National Women’s Party, and held mass marches and hunger strikes. Woodrow Wilson officially took office in January of 1917. World War I was in full swing and it was a general belief at the time that women were only supposed to support the war effort and the President. ironic that many women at home and abroad were fighting in the war effort to support and make the world safe for democracy, yet the democratic process was not practiced at home.
She organized groups of women to picket the White House. The subsequent arrests began in June of 1917. The women were usually charged with obstructing traffic, and the women protestors were viewed by many, including the prison officials as suffragist traitors. On November 15, 1917, while picketing in front of the White House, holding signs that read, ‘Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty,’ thirtythree women were arrested and taken to the Occoquan Workhouse, in Virginia. Although the women were innocent, defenseless and posed no threat, they were jailed simply for the act of carrying signs in front of the White House. Signs imploring newly elected President Wilson to grant them the right to vote. After the women arrived at Occoquan, many of whom were returning protestors, they were greeted by the warden, W.H. Whittaker, who ordered the guards to teach the disrespectful suffragists a lesson. After all, how dare they picket President Wilson's House, asking for the vote?
That night, November 15, 1917, became known as The Night of Terror, as forty club wielding prison Guards, given the word and blessing by Whittaker, went on a brutal rampage against thirty-three women wrongfully arrested for ‘obstructing the sidewalk.’ By the nights end, the women were barely alive. They had been kicked, choked, dragged, pulled by the hair, pinched and slapped. Some were lifted into the air and thrown forcibly against the concrete walls and

Many years ago during my married days, just prior to my divorce, I accidentally overturned my golf cart. Heather, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called
floor, or stabbed with the shafts of their broken banners.
Dora Lewis was dragged by her hair and thrown into a dark cell, where she hit her head on the iron bed, knocking her unconscious. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, who thought Lewis had been killed, was extremely terrified and subsequently died of a heart attack.
Lucy Burns was handcuffed to the cell bars, hands above her head, and severely beaten. She was left hanging in that position all night, bleeding and gasping for air. No one was safe. There’s an affidavit on record of a 73-year-old woman who was nearly beaten to death. The women remained incarcerated for weeks and for some, months. The living conditions were appalling. The women were starved, given worm infested meals of a gray unappetizing palette, or rancid food to eat. Many had no blankets, were not allowed to bathe, or given combs or brushes. Water was given in a bucket and not freshened or refilled until empty and sometimes not even then.
Alice Paul, who had organized the picketing, went on a hunger strike. When she continued to refuse to eat, the guards tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. The guards continued to torture her in this manner for weeks, until word was smuggled to the press. President Wilson and his supporters tried to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane in an effort to have her permanently institutionalized. The psychiatrist stated Paul was a strong and brave woman and those were character traits and didn't make her crazy.

The publicity and public outcry for support finally forced President Wilson to endorse a federal woman suffrage amendment. In 1918, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was written into law, it provided and read as follows: ‘The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.’ Women’s suffrage in the United States was achieved gradually, at state and local levels, during the 19th century and early in the 20th century. After the 19th Amendment passed, two women ran for President in 1920 as members of the Democratic Party, Laura Clay and Cora Wilson Stewart. The Democratic nomination that year went to James M. Cox, but the Presidential election was won by Warren G. Harding.
In the HBO movie, Iron Jawed Angels, by German director Katja von Garnier, Hilary Swank portrays Alice Paul, as she fought for women’s rights. Angelica Huston portrays Carrie Chapman Catt, who opposed the views and tactics of Paul. The movie serves to remind us of the lengths some have taken to preserve our freedom and rights as a democratic society.
The question asked so innocently, piqued my curiosity, so I ventured to ask many of my women friends if they were going to vote. I was very surprised by the answers and the justifications given. Only 30% were going to vote, others stated they didn’t have the time or ‘why

These are bright, intelligent women who have issue with the current local and/or federal government, albeit the House of Representatives, the Senate, the President, the City Council members, the City Mayor, or State Assemblymen. I asked them, “How can you have it your way if you never place your order?” Did I vote? You bet your life I did. After all, life altering decisions and history are STILL being made every day.

Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series - Virtual Strangers will bring high energy bluegrass to Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series, March 11, at 3pm, in the Turrentine Room of the Library at 239 S. Kalmia St., Escondido, 92025. Virtual Strangers will play their award winning music in the tradition of bluegrass legends such as Earl Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs. On Saturday, February 11, at approximately 10:40 PM, the Escondido Fire Department was dispatched to a reported commercial building fire at Hale Avenue and Tulip Street. Responding units immediately observed heavy smoke and fire and a second alarm response was requested. The Battalion Chief ’s initial report included a large fire in the rear of the building with fire already through the roof. Firefighters attacked the fire defensively using large hose lines and areal ladders to apply water from the outside. Firefighters reported that the roof had burned through or collapsed and that several of the walls showed signs of separating. Due to the danger of potential wall collapse, firefighters maintained a safety zone and continued to apply water until the fire was contained and controlled. Responding units included: 9 Engines, 3 Trucks, 3 Ambulances and 4 Chief Officers. A total 46 firefighters from Escondido, San Marcos and Carlsbad helped control the fire. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.
The business in the building was Moto Forza, a Ducati motorcycle service and sales center. The fire completely destroyed the service area of the building. Over 100 motorcycles and equipment, tools and parts were damaged or destroyed. The fire is estimated to have caused approximately $3 million in damage to the building and contents. Due to the instability of the structure, fire investigators were unable to immediately gain access to the building and they will continue the investigation once it is safe to enter. Fatal Collision - Escondido
On Thursday, February 16, at about
11:50 PM officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched to the 2100 block of East Grand Avenue regarding a serious injury collision. EPD officers and Escondido Fire paramedics arrived on scene minutes later and determined a vehicle versus motorcycle collision occurred. Fire personnel attempted life saving measures although the motorcyclist died at the scene.
Based on witness statements and physical evidence at the scene, a 45 year old male was riding a 2006 special construction motorcycle eastbound in the 2100 block of Grand Avenue. The rider did not negotiate a bend in the roadway and collided head on with a 2015 Honda Accord. The motorcyclist was solo on the motorcycle. His impairment is unknown and under investigation. The 28 year old male driver of the Honda was not injured and alcohol or drug impairment is not a factor. The traffic investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Officer Steve Braucht of the Traffic Division.

I have practically begged Charlie (Mitich, the owner) to write a book or two. One on the restaurant and food business, the other just on his observations on life. So far, he has refused - but we are working on him. Once you get to know Charlie you’ll find that there are very few storytellers around that can keep up with him. He reduces Evelyn and I to solid laughter almost ever time we have breakfast there.
He’s a very successful restaurateur and could teach a lot of young folks all about the food business - how to buy, how to price, how to prepare, how to hire staff, how to treat customers (and staff - very little turnover there), and

On Feb. 28, San Diego Humane Society will perform 80 free spay/neuter surgeries and give away 75 free spay and neuter appointments to qualifying pet owners in celebration of World Spay Day.
Income-qualifying individuals with pit bulls, Chihuahuas and cats are invited to sign up their pets for a free spay or neuter surgery starting as early as 10 a.m. at one of San Diego Humane Society’s three campuses: Oceanside, Escondido and San Diego. Each campus will schedule 25 appointments for future dates on a first-come, firstserved basis. At their closed session meeting recently the Escondido City Council made the decision to extend Graham Mitchell’s contract as Escondido City Manager for an additional 30 days. Mr. Mitchell has been serving as Escondido’s City Manager since December 2015.

Heading the list is the growing concern over unfunded pensions, which are estimated to rise by $40.2 million by 2022, according to Mayor Sam Abed.
He said it is “rising to a crisis level,” which puts the city in a difficult position regarding its General Fund, as a portion of those funds are used to pay for CalPERS, the state pension fund.
The rise in cost, Abed said, amounts to 33 percent of the General Fund, which would wreck havoc on city services provided to residents and cuts to staffs may be possible.

It is difficult to imagine what our institutions are thinking when a small college like Palomar College in San Marcos invites in Spanish people who cannot speak English to attend free classes to learn the language that immigrants are required to have a fundamental knowledge of when they apply for citizenship! The five city leaders, though, said the problem begins with the state of California and its investments and rate of returns. Those returns were pegged at 7.5 percent, but cut to 7 percent, which led to the significant rise put on the city. Councilmen John Masson and Ed Gallo, along with Abed, said the rate of return would be more like 5 percent, which would put the city even deeper in the hole.

Ms. Calac Verdugo, daughter of the late well-known Leo Calac, gave a brief history of the Rincon tribe in a power point presentation that included information on people, arts, artifacts, treaties, and an up to date briefing on current plans for the Rincon Reservation. Included were plans for an exciting new Rincon Museum which is being developed. Historically, the native people have had a great respect and reverence for the earth and this continues today in plans for the valley reservation. “I’m concerned with the lack of control we have as a city,” Masson added. “This thing is a disaster and we could all end up in bankruptcy.” Perhaps the second biggest topic of discussion centered on the city’s rising homeless population, which fell under public safety.
Gallo said the city should approach San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar to tap the county for funds to get people off the streets.
Diaz said the lack of shelters compounds the issue, and the one catering to homeless kicks them out during the day. As a result, homeless populate parks, sidewalks, libraries and do not get the services required to get them into housing and the workforce.
“They don’t have anywhere to go,” Diaz said. “They need a place to go during the daytime.”
Hooking Kids on Fishing
My new Assembly Bill 478, will raise the age requirement for the purchase of fishing licenses by two years. By raising the age from 16 to 18 years, we will expose larger numbers of California’s youth to nature, expand their life experiences and perhaps, their futures. This is especially important for youth living in inner cities or underserved communities. For many kids, putting down the iPhone or shutting off the video game to pick up a fishing pole may be something they may never get a chance to experience. Making fishing more affordable puts the sport within reach of many who would normally not be able to afford it. There has been a stark decline in fishing license sales in CA in the past few years. At $47.01 per year, with a $14.61 additional rod add-on, California’s annual resident fishing license fee is the second-highest in the country. Since 71% of anglers
started to fish prior to age 18, removing barriers that prevent families from introducing kids to fishing will go a long way toward ensuring the survival of the sport. If the kids get hooked early, just maybe they’ll buy a license when they turn 18.
The Hidden Valley Kiwanis Fishing Derby, open to all ages and held in many locations, including the annual Trout Derby in April at Escondido's Dixon Lake, is just one example. These events have attracted thousands of children over the decades. Our kids love to fish and experience nature; they just need to be exposed to it. By allowing minors to fish free for an additional two years, AB 478 will help get kids out of their rooms, away from electronic distractions and into the great outdoors where they can experience California's natural heritage.

It didn't start out as a particularly scary evening . . . far from it. Rather routine, in fact.
Evelyn was sleeping, still trying to recover from that bout of the flu that had laid her low for the better part of six days in a row. She was starting to return to normal but still required more than the usual amount of sleep. Her strength had been sapped and now she was trying to regain it.
I had hired a beautiful young gal named Katrina to help take the load off of Evelyn. Katrina knew how to keep books, was familiar with Quicken, Excel, all the stuff accounting types need to keep the dollars and cents in line. She was bi-lingual, speaking English, Spanish, Farsi (Persian) and Arabic. Single and attractive, I didn't know how long she'd be with us before some gallant young lad would come and sweep her off her feet and dash off to a lovely little cottage with a picket fence.
I told Katrina I was going out for some fresh air, thought I'd go up and visit my old stomping grounds, Dixon Lake, where I had owned the concession for boat rentals and fishing permits for some 27 years. She said she'd catch any phone calls and evelyn was to call her if she needed anything. So, off I went to Dixon Lake. The sun had already set but I had brought along a flashlight and, together with the night time lighting in the picnic area where the ranger offices are located, I managed to retrace some of the paths I had often trod during those 27 years that I owned "Lyle's at Dixon Lake." Lots of great memories. Then the reverie was broken as my cellphone buzzed. I checked it and saw in incoming text message. "You are in danger! Someone is tracking you and intends to kill you! He is upset because you've been arguing against gun control and supporting the 2nd Amendment. He heard about your presentation to the Escondido Fish and Game Association and he is livid! He wants to make you an example! This guy is dangerous! Keep your eyes and ears open!"
Well! Had I been a young 25-35 year old guy, I would have been alarmed at this message. But I'm considerably past the 25-35 year old category. Another twenty years and I will qualify as an 'elderly gent.' Not quite as swift of foot, or mind, nor am I quite as strong as I used to be. How to deal with this? I've never been stalked or hunted before. You can bet your last nickle that I was alarmed. I headed toward the ranger station but though the lights were on, there was no one inside. I figured they were on their nightly rounds, checking the campgrounds and such.
I was alone. In a darkened park. No protection. (And, no gun). No means of protecting myself.
Suddenly, headlights! Maybe that was the ranger truck! No, it wasn't. It was a sedan of some type. One man got out and he was carrying what looked like a Kalishnokov. A high powered assault weapon. Great!

The hunter now shouldered his weapon and pulled out a huge sword or knife. What in the hell is going on?! I became aware of some rustling to the right of me and suddenly, there was Katrina!
The Worst U.S. President … Or Was He?
He was a gambler, a hard drinker and a womanizer, but did that make him a bad President?
Warren Gamaliel Harding was the 29thPresident of the United States, serving from March 4, 1921 until his death in 1923. At the time of his death, he was one of the most popular presidents, but the subsequent exposure of scandals that took place under his administration, such as Teapot Dome, eroded his popular regard, as did revelations of an affair by Nan Britton, one of his mistresses.

I took her hand and began to lead her in the direction of the building when I both felt and heard a click; I whirled around and looked and there on my hand was a handcuff, the other cuff being held by Katrina. I looked at the handcuff and looked at Katrina who was now wearing a smile that looked remarkably like a smirk. "We have been looking for you for some time, my colleagues and I." "I have him! Come ahead!"
A rustling in the bushes and there he was. My hunter. A bearded, husky guy . . . with a sword about three feet in length . . . frightening just to look at.
"We are about to make you famous, Davis. You will be known worldwide. My colleague in the car will be here in mere moments . . . with his camera. He will record this!" With that he grabbed my hair, held my head tightly and brought his knife to my throat.

Because of those foibles, in historical rankings of the U.S. Presidents, Harding is often ranked among the worst … but was he?
Many historians have looked back at Harding and have determined one of his biggest problems was poor judgement in some of his appointments, especially trust in cronies, while other appointments were well-regarded.
Harding was born Nov. 2, 1865, in Blooming Grove, Ohio. As an adult, he settled in Marion, Ohio, when not yet 20 years old and bought The Marion Star, which he built it into a successful newspaper. In 1899, he was elected to the Ohio State Senate and, after four years there, successfully ran for lieutenant governor. He was defeated for governor in 1910, but was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914.
Harding ran for the Republican nomination for president in 1920, finally winning the nod after 10 ballots. He ran a “front-porch” campaign from his home in Marion and won in a landslide over Democrat James M. Cox and Socialist Party candidate Eugene Debs. He became the first sitting senator to be elected president. Two members of his cabinet were implicated in corruption: Interior SecretaryAlbert Fall and Attorney General Harry Daugherty. The resulting
scandals did not fully emerge until after Harding's death, nor did word of his extramarital affairs, but both greatly damaged his reputation. Harding died Aug. 2, 1923, in San Francisco of a cerebral hemorrhage caused by heart disease. He was on a western speaking tour. Harding was succeeded by his vice president, Calvin Coolidge.
Like most politicians of his time, Harding accepted that patronage and graft would be used to repay political favors. He had his sister Mary (who was legally blind) appointed a teacher at the Ohio School for the Blind, although there were better-qualified candidates, and offered publicity in his newspaper in exchange for free railroad passes for himself and his family. According to one observer, "… it is doubtful Harding ever thought there was anything dishonest in accepting the perquisites of position or office. Patronage and favors seemed the normal reward for party service in those days.”
Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover accompanied Harding on the Western trip and later wrote that Harding asked then what Hoover would do if he knew of some great scandal. Would he publicize it or bury it. Hoover replied Harding should publish and get credit for integrity, and asked for more information. When Hoover inquired as to (attorney general) Daugherty's possible involvement, Harding refused to answer. The scandal which has likely done the greatest damage to Harding's reputation is Teapot Dome. The scandal involved an oil reserve in Wyoming which was one of three set aside for the use of the Navy in a national emergency. There was a long-standing argument that the reserves should be developed. When the Harding administration took office, Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall took up the argument and Harding signed an executive order in May 1921 transferring the reserves from the Navy Department to Interior, Subsequently, some of the oil found its way into private storage tanks as a result of underhanded dealings. Like most of the administration's scandals, Tea Pot Dome came to light after Harding's death, and he was not aware of the illegal aspects. As a result, Fall, Harding's first Secretary of the Interior was the first former cabinet member sent to prison for crimes committed in office.
Harding wasn’t the only U.S. President to enjoy a game of poker, a shot of bourbon, and engage in extra-marital affairs. And, not all of his decisions went bad – his vice president, Calvin Coolidge and secretary of commerce, Herbert Hoover, both became presidents in their own right.

If you do not have guns . . . well . . . I think I make my point." With that his colleague appeared, videocamera in hand . . . a toothy grin on his face.
My Hunter drew back his knife and began to speak in Arabic . . . I noticed Katrina had a glazed, fascinated look in her eyes . . and just the touch of a contented smile. The knife approached my throat and began to saw . . . I knew that my screams would not be heard . . . and that, soon, only the gurgle of my hot blood, pouring out of my arteries would replace the screams.
I've never been so frightened in my life. . . . . and then I woke up.
My body was sweating. I was wide awake.
There was no Katrina. There was no hunter. There was no one videotaping me. It wasn't a dream. It was a friggin'
nightmare! And all because of my strong belief in the 2nd Amendment. We’re often asked if we ever plan to retire. Well, it might be a long shot but under the right set of circumstances it could happen. Nome and I left the gypsy life of the corporate rat-race in 1995 and retired to become local “downtown merchants.” For going on 22 years we’ve opened the Computer Factory at 9:00 AM each morning, six days a week. We’ve run our business like the ones we grew up with in small-town Indiana which basically means that our customers run the business and our job is to be very good at doing what they want us to do. Apparently we’ve done that pretty well.

Driving around running errands one afternoon and Evelyn and I got to talking about a variety of issues. At one point she asked, "I wonder why all of these celebrities get involved with alcohol and drugs and just ruin their lives." "I have some experience in that," I said. "Alan Wiggins, the great San Diego Padre baseball player always used to come up and fish at Dixon Lake. Handsome kid. Very athletic. Very amiable. He got into the fast lane with 'the beautiful people' and it happened that plenty of alcohol, grass, and cocaine was always available. He got into cocaine and went downhill fast. He became addicted, got to be just a step short when going after a ball, a little slower on bringing the bat around, and was a step slower running the bases. In time, he was cut from the team . . . but he still hung with 'the beautiful people,' and cocaine. His weight dropped, he became a shadow of himself. When he died, he weighed little more than 100 lbs. That cocaine is powerful stuff. He was making millions as a baseball star . . . and he blew it all for that white powder. Things happen when you become 'a celebrity.'
I tasted a bit of it when I went to work for KFMB. I became a minor celebrity. I met a lot of people . . . attended parties with the fast crowd . . . 'the beautiful people.' I noticed people I used to call on when I was a radio sales rep and who barely gave me the

The prince would probably seek to expand the repair business to include game consoles, cell phones and perhaps even Apple products. We certainly have the space. The Prince might consider Web design and hosting and remote network maintenance. There are many growth opportunities.
If the right Prince came along we could make it fairly easy to step into a viable, self sustaining business. Certainly stepping into an established business with the required infrastructure and customer base can be far less costly than trying to start
a technology service business from scratch and even less costly than a four year college education.
We would want to have a trial period of a month where the Prince worked with us in the business to ensure that both parties were comfortable with the transition. If everything worked out we would be available to help with the transition for an extended period. Is this really ever really going to happen? Remember “Snow Whites” theme song “Some Day My Prince Will Come.” Until then we’ll keep opening the doors at 9:00 AM Monday through Saturday
That being said, we would like to have time for some travel and leisure while we are still on the “green side.” Nobody in our family is interested in our business; they all have their own careers. So it’s up to our fairy godmother to bring us a Prince. Our Prince would be someone with a passion for technology and a genuine desire to help people. It would be someone who wants the freedom of
time of day, now wanted to chat with me and were all smiles . . . all because now I was 'somebody.' I was on the air in morning and afternoon drive time . . . I did the traffic reports for KFMB and developed my own personality . . . from time to time, when traffic was slow, I'd read "lyle poems.' They became rather popular. At KFMB's "I Love You, San Diego," parties, I would meet more and more 'beautiful people' . . . and they would meet me. Plenty of alcohol, and drugs, if you wanted them. And plenty of warm and willing women who wanted to meet and be with even a minor celebrity ... which I had become.
In time, Scruff Evans, Terry Miller and I (Scruff was the afternoon prime time air personality, Terry was kind of a 'camp follower' who liked to hang out with radio people . . . we started smoking dope . . . or at least they let me smoke with them. They had been smoking if for some time . . . I had only just started. Danuta, the blonde with only one name, who did "Sun Up San Diego" on TV and also did the news for the radio station . . . introduced me to grass. She had a beautiful condo in Coronado and drove a Porsche. We spent a lot of time at her condo. We were a couple for about six months. Probably the most diverse and fascinating woman I had ever known. She taught me a lot of things . . . one of which was the smoking of marijuana, which I had never done before. I was funny and made her laugh. But, people who are stoned tend to laugh pretty easily.
I remember one day Scruff told me he had some coke and he and Terry and I would try it. I tried it . . . but it didn't do anything for me. Thank God whoever sold the coke to Scruff had 'stepped on it' (cut it with baby powder, etc.) so often that it wasn't very strong. Had it been medical grade cocaine I would likely have become addicted and God only knows where I would have wound up as a result. I never tried coke again . . . but I smoked grass for, probably, about six-nine months. Several times I went on the air while stoned . . . no one ever knew the difference. One time I got off the air and asked Danuta how the traffic reports went. "Fine. You did well and . . ." and she looked in my eyes and said . . "oh, my God, you're stoned" And began laughing. But the audience never knew.
I have not smoked grass in, probably, 29 years. I left broadcasting in 1982 and ran "Lyle's at Dixon Lake" and "Lyle's at Moonlight Beach" for 27 and 17 years respectively. Don't regret having tried grass . . .but have no desire to try it again. I well remember how little ol' lyle davis, a regular guy, turned into a guy that women began to covet and chase and make suggestive offers to . . . I was still the same guy, but now I was on the radio. I was 'somebody.'" So, I told Evelyn, that's how it happens. "Entertainers, broadcasters, athletes, they all meet and run with 'the beautiful
people' and, suddenly, they're one of the 'beautiful people' . . . to maintain their image they agree to partake in alcoholic sprees . . . and to experiment with marijuana and cocaine. Some survive. Some don't. Alan Wiggins didn't. I did."
And so, today, I'm, once again, plain old ordinary lyle . . . but if you're a beautiful woman and want to throw yourself at me . . . I'm very shy . . . a little backward about coming forward, but I can probably be had.

In Wal-Mart recently there were carts overflowing with merchandise that seemed just dumped into them. Signs on the carts said, “Close Out,” “50% off.” Almost every item had “San Diego Chargers” on it.
This week, there are shopping carts (fewer, for sure) filled with chocolates, candies, artificial flowers, and other red colored gifts bearing messages like “Happy Valentine’s” and “For My Love.”
The same signs are posted. “Close Out,” “All Valentine items, 50% off.” Soon it will be 60%, then 70. The selection and the quality will go down as the percentage goes up. Love, it seems, has been marked
When I officiate a marriage ceremony, I always note the beauty and the value of the wedding rings,. Expensive rings, I say, remind us that love is never cheap or common. It is never discounted; indeed, love may cost us deeply.
Paul wrote, “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.“ Romans 5:8. God didn’t look in the bargain bin when He reached out to redeem man from sin. He offered his very best. And He asks us to offer our best. “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35. Not by our doctrine, or our grand gestures, or our huge contributions, but by our love. Because, as Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 13, Love “Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end” (The Message Bible). God’s love is never leftover, never discounted. It is not cheap or common. Love never dies.

Moving into Paseo Santa Fe Phase II
2016 marked the completion of Phase I of the Paseo Santa Fe Improvement Project. Finally, we are seeing our long-term plans to create a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly area along S. Santa Fe Avenue come to fruition. Residents and visitors have already experienced the transformation of S. Santa Fe Avenue from Vista Village to Oceanview Drive. The City has received over $5 million in grant funds to continue the transformation of S. Santa Fe Avenue from Oceanview Avenue to Terrace Drive with Phase.
Once again, construction detours will periodically take place during the
Phase II improvements as the utility lines above ground are placed underground. After this portion of the project, storm water pipes will be installed and then the new street realignment will take place. Following up will be the installation of the new lighting, sidewalks and kiosks, and other amenities. Vista’s second roundabout will be constructed at Guajome Street during this phase. We appreciate your patience as these construction detours begin to take place in the next few months. Born in a coal mining camp in Alva, Kentucky (Black Star) on November 1, 1933, she was the eldest child of Herbert and Gladys Warfield/Steele. She graduated from Black Star High School. Moving to California, she received an Associate degree at Miramar Community College and a Bachelor degree in Psychology from San Diego State University. She was involved with many volunteer services. Nature was important to her. She enjoyed the bike trail that crossed the creek at the Twin Oaks, and we walked it as often as possible. With her help and the drive to save it, this creek was not concreted over. This accomplishment was her pride and joy. Nature still had a home, and the creek gave life to them. She was a woman that took in so much joy by just watching the sunsets and admiring the moon that shined so bright in the California sky. Lita is survived by her daughter, Brenda Miles Turner; sisters and brother, Wanda Devault, Linda Bruner, Dorothy Burton, and Robert (Bobby) Warfield; grandchildren, Bryan Bowles, Wesley Woodson, Wendy Tusken, Lita Campbell, Jessica Batista; and six great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cabell B. Bowles; and her daughters, Melissa Bowles, and Georgia Bowles. She will be placed with her daughter, Georgia, in the San Marcos Cemetery, 1021 Mulberry Dr. San Marcos, CA. There will be a private service for the family.

Lucille passed away on January 6, 2017 with her family by her side, at the age of 93. She was born in Escondido, CA to Grover and Clara Steeve. Lucille attended local schools, graduating from Escondido High School in 1941. In 1946, she married V. Travis Broach, a Louisiana native. They lived in Escondido for 44 years where they raised their family. When they retired in 1990, they moved to West Point, CA near their daughter, JoAnne. For the next 20 years, Travis and Lucille enjoyed their 'Shack in the Woods' in the beautiful Sierra Gold Country. In 2010, they moved to a senior living community in Cameron Park, CA and after Travis passed away

in 2013, Lucille moved to Auburn, CA to be near her son Steve, where she spent her final years at Creekside Villa. Lucille lived a full life, loved by all who knew her. In her early years, she loved to ride horses, play sports, and work on the ranch delivering milk from Steeve's Dairy for her father. Along with being a busy homemaker, she cut hair, was an outstanding cook, and an accomplished artist. Lucille and Travis loved to travel and spend time in Borrego Springs, CA. A highlight was their trip to Germany and then to the Holy Lands. Lucille is survived by her children, Kenneth (Kathy), Stephen (Karen), and JoAnne (Ron). She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. There will be a Celebration of Life for Lucille on Saturday, March 4, beginning at 1pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 643 W. 13th Ave., Escondido. All are welcome.
