It's a relaxing thing, he thought, cruising on the Mighty Mississippi River.
The shoreline, covered with thick Edenlike jungles of beautifully green trees, seems to beckon one to stop and spend some time. But, of course, you don't. You're on board a paddlewheel steamship, waited on hand and foot by a retinue of highly trained wait staff, equally high trained pursers, tour guides, entertainers . . . it's a happy ship and a happy time.

He didn't want to go at first. It was Her idea. He fought it . . . but then they made the first trip two years ago, out of New Orleans. And he was persuaded. These cruises are fun . . . many memories to be made.
She had made the reservations for this trip without seeking his approval. His approval was quickly granted. He's a quick learner.
A Mississippi Cruise is like no other, he thought. 'You travel up river at about 56 miles per hour, go down river at about 11 miles per hour. It is a leisurely pace . . . plenty of time to slow down and begin to learn how to enjoy life. It is difficult to totally relax, being a newspaperman. There are still deadlines to be met . . . and communication by cell phone and the Internet is not always possible when on the river. And you have to get the tasks done as readers and advertisers are counting on you. These were the thoughts that stayed in his mind even while he tried to relax.
The itinerary called for a departure from St. Louis, going to visit Hannibal, Missouri, the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens, whom we all later learned to call 'Mark Twain,' and then Nauvoo, Illinois, one of the first enclaves of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, whom we have come to call Mormons. But Ol' Man River, as we were to later learn, had plans of his own. Upon boarding the paddlewheel steamer and being shown to their stateroom, they were in awe of its size. Lawdy, you could play a game of tennis in that stateroom. Doubles.
It was at least three times the size of the stateroom they had on an earlier trip.
There had been a lot of rain in the Midwest. He took note of this prior to departure, and a good friend and traveling companion, Dave Schmitt, of Escondido, had said that the forecast called for four days of rain. "Great," he thought, "a five day cruise, four of which will be filled with rain." As it happened, the weather turned out beautifully; but, the earlier rains had swollen the Mississippi to the point that the water was so high the steamship was unable to pass beneath several bridges en route to Hannibal and Nauvoo so a detour was

made. The boat diverted to Chester, Illinois.
Now, Chester, Illinois, is not a remarkable city. It is very small. It has a courthouse and a library and a main street. Oh, yes. It also has a statue of Popeye.
The creator of Popeye is from Chester, Illinois. It is the chief claim to fame of that city. The guy, Elzie Crisler Segar, had been cartooning for awhile and built his cartoons around a family named Oyl, one of whom was a woman named Olive . . . Olive Oyl. Later, a sailor appeared by the name of Popeye. It was supposed to be a temporary character . . but it caught the public's fancy and Popeye became the central character of the cartoon, which then grew to be internationally famous and made Segar a wealthy man. All of his principal characters were modeled after residents of Chester. Popeye was modeled after Frank "Rocky" Fiegel,

Olive Oyl was modeled after Ms. Dora Paskel; J. Wellington Wimpy is based on Segar's old boss, J. William Schurchert, owner and operator of the Chester Opera House. These people all physically resembled their characters. Photos show a clear resemblance to his cartoon characters, particularly to Popeye. He was not impressed with Chester. It was not his choice of a place to visit on the river, even though he acknowledged a grudging admiration for Popeye. He sailed next to Hannibal, Missouri.
They had sailed all night and arrived at the Hannibal port at 4am. He was sound asleep. So was she. He was awakened by the blast of a passing train that ran parallel to the shore and only about 50 feet away from the dockside. He got up, threw some clothes on, and went outside to watch the boat crew prepare the boat for landing, do the tie downs, tighten up the lines, and secure the boat.
He went back to bed. For the next hour he marveled at how Hannibal, Missouri, had arranged for trains to come by every 15 minutes commencing at 4am and blow their horns loud enough to raise the dead.
Eventually, he fell back asleep and awakened at 7am, bleary eyed and tired. But it was time to grab a quick breakfast at the buffet line, then head into Hannibal to do some research. He wondered what would have become of Hannibal, Missouri, had it not produced a genius like Samuel Clemens. Clemens, who was born in nearby Florida, Missouri, grew up in Hannibal and drew many of his characters from family members and friends; some photos remain of the principals from whom he drew his characters. One of the most important, however, Tom Blankenship, upon whom Huck Finn is based, has no known photograph. There is a photograph of the Blankenship house, and

they are building a replica on the site of the house.
The mind of Samuel Clemens was absolutely brilliant. His observations on the world, his pithy sayings; they survive to this day and are just as funny, just as cogent, just as piercing as they were when he first wrote them . . . or uttered them on the lecture circuit.
vate tour. Being media does have its perks, he thought. One of them is meeting folks like Ila and Henry. Both are, as you would imagine, very knowledgeable about Samuel Langhorn Clemens. Henry, in particular, is a storehouse of knowledge about him. This you would expect from a former History Teacher and holder of several degrees, including Museum Science.
Clemens would adopt the name "Mark Twain" and go on to make a fortune, then lose it, declaring bankruptcy, then pulled out of bankruptcy . . . built himself a lovely home in Connecticut . . . and would eventually die there.
During all these years, the books of Mark Twain, most notably "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn" put Hannibal, Missouri, on the map. Today, somewhere between 50,000 and over 100,000 tourists each year visit the city for Twainrelated events. Had it not been for Twain . . . Hannibal would be just another river town . . would have remained small, nondescript . . . perhaps drifting off to nothingness.
But, because of Twain, it is today a thriving community. Still small, around 18,000, but vibrant. Good people live there. Kind people. Helpful people.

The only cow in a small town in Northern Italy stopped giving milk. So the town folk found they could buy a cow in Sicily quite cheaply. So, they brought the cow over from Sicily.
It was absolutely wonderful. It produced lots of milk every day and everyone was happy. They bought a bull to mate with the cow to get more cows, so they'd never have to worry about their milk supply again.
They put the bull in the pasture with the cow but whenever the bull tried to mount the cow, the cow would move away. No matter what approach the bull tried, the cow would move away from the bull, and he was never able to do the deed.
Going upriver they had Missouri on their side of the boat, going down river they had Illinois on their side of the boat. They were amazed at the seeming tranquility of the river yet it was clear that this was a powerful, treacherous river. In Hannibal the river was two feet above flood stage at 16 feet; in an earlier flood the river had risen to 32 feet. Even so, today we saw many homes, on stilts, surrounded by water. One home they saw had been crushed by a falling tree. The raging river had eroded the dirt surrounding a tree that
The people were very upset and decided to go to the local veterinarian, Dr. Santucchi, who was very wise, to tell him what was happening and to ask his advice.
"Whenever the bull tries to mount our cow, she moves away. If he approaches from the back, she moves forward. When he approaches her from the front, she backs off. If he attempts it from the one side, she walks away to the other side." The veterinarian rubbed his chin thoughtfully and pondered this before asking, "Did you by chance, buy this cow in Sicily?" The people were dumbfounded, since no one had ever mentioned that they had brought the cow over from Sicily.
"You are truly a wise veterinarian," they said. "How did you know that we got the cow from Sicily?" The Vet replied with a distant look in his eyes and says, "My wife is from Sicily."

There were luxury summer homes, there were cheap and ugly mobile homes, their were shanties, there were little more than camper shells. The River spared none. They were all subjected to flooding and, to some, destruction. These are big boats. The Mississippi Queen is 382 feet long and generates 2000 horsepower of energy with her watertube type boilers. It's an all steel boat with three main rudders, two rudders aft and one bow thruster. She carries 107,800 gallons of fresh waer and carries 329,000 of Bunker C(#6) type diesel. If we estimate the cost of diesel at $1 per gallon we're talking $329,000 each time this boat is fueled. A tank of fuel should last about 16 days so we're talking a pretty expensive operating cost just for fuel alone. Add in the fact that the ship carries 157 crew members to service up to 422 passengers (a ratio of about one staff member for every 2.7 passengers. These 422 passengers are accommodated in 208 staterooms. To get some idea of the commerce of The River one need only recognize that it is quite common to see a towboat (for they are not called tugboats on The River) with two to three barges. Think about this for a moment.

Each barge carries 1500 tons. A large semi-trailer truck by comparison carries 26 tons. Thus, when you see a three barge tow, which represents 4500 tons of material being moved, you would have to see a convoy of 174 semi-trailer trucks on the highway to carry an equivalent amount of material! To take this one step further, if you have a 15 barge tow (which though not as common as a two the three barge tow is not uncommon) you would see some 22,500 tons of material being moved. Now let's match that up to what it would take our nation's trucking fleet to move the same amount of material. You would need . . . . a convoy of 870 semi trailer trucks to move an equivalent amount! This, we suspect, would cause just a wee bit of a traffic jam on our nation's highways. The River . . . the Old Man . . . Mississippi. It's clear that Native Americans, whom we call Indians, were the first to use the Mississippi. The Sauk and Kickapoo Indians called it MecheSepe. The Menomonee called it MechaSepua. The Chippewa called MezeZebe, and the Ottawa called it MississSepi. In all these slight variations, mecha, meche, meze, and mississ mean the same thing: large or big. Sapa, sepua, sepe, zebe, and sepi all mean: river. So the correct translation of any of these words is "large river." This large river was at first negotiated by canoe. That soon proved inadequate for settlers. Being innovative, they created the flatboat and rafts. They were often crudely built for a one-way trip, then loaded with cargo and floated downstream to New Orleans. Cargo was sold and unloaded and the flatboats and rafts were broken up and sold for lumber.

Special Musical Guest Closed Out “Great Kindness Challenge” – Hope Elementary School in Carlsbad is pleased to announce that Grant Knoche, formerly of Kidz Bop, put on a special performance Monday, January 30th, to close out the “Great Kindness Challenge” week of January 23-27. This Challenge week was to encourage students around the globe to complete 50 simple acts of kindness. Grant shared an inspiring message to the students, then entertained them with a live singing and dancing performance. “Kindness inspires kindness,” said Grant, “and I’m honored to be part of the Great Kindness Challenge with the kids at Hope!” Hope students will also be introduced to a new Compassionate Cafeteria Campaign called, “Better Together.” Based on the idea behind the “Sit With Us” app created by a California teen, “Better Together” was started by a Hope parent, and is a way elementary school kids – who typically don’t carry cell phones – can

Still later the keelboat entered the world of river commerce. It soon became the queen of the river trade. It was a twoway traveler, long and narrow with graceful lines and built to survive many trips. A keelboat could carry as much as 80 tons of freight. Floated downriver it was then cordelled up river. Cordelling consisted simply of strong men walking along the river, pulling the boat with lines. Despite treacherous river currents, snags, shifting sandbars, hostile Indians and river pirates, river navigation began to grow quickly. Then in 1811 Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston built the first steamboat at a cost of $40,000. She was a sidewheeler and she, the New Orleans, launched the golden era of paddlewheelers.
During Mark Twain's day the Mississippi was a busy area of commerce. In fact, if you can imagine this, it was probably even busier than today. Why? Because of what we're riding on today. Steamboats.
In 1814 only 21 steamboats arrived in New Orleans, in 1819 the figure had jumped to 191 . . . and in 1836, a scant 22 years later, there would be 1200 steamboat cargoes unloaded in New Orleans . . . a huge growth. But then what happened?
The steamboats eventually gave way to the railway systems. Inland, the rail lines could go where no steamship dared to go.
There is a passion among river folk and it's a passion that is easy to understand.

The river is constantly in motion, even in the driest of years. The flow equates to power. And raw, naked beauty. Along its banks there is lush vegetation, the river bottomlands represent prime farming country, never mind the occasional inundation from flood conditions . . . it is still land so rich that almost anything you plant there will grow.
This same passion is what drove young Samuel Clemens to become a certified river pilot on April 9, 1895, in St. Louis, at the tender age of 24.
Clemens loved the paddlewheel steamboat. In fact, it was during his years on the river that he chose his pen name, "Mark Twain," a frequent call of the leadsman which would indicate the water was two fathoms, or 12 feet, deep and thus safe for passage. Many people who follow Mark Twain know the story of his name. But there is another, lesser known story. There was once a Captain Isaiah Sellers who signed his letters full of river information and sent them to newspapers signed Mark Twain.
Sellers was an old man who tended to draw on his expeience when he wrote his letters on river conditions. The brash young Sam Clemens chose to parody him. It was a witty parody and it stretched Captain Sellers' memories and mannerisms to absurdity. Folks loved Clemens' parody but apparently Sellers did not find it amusing. As Mark Twain later said, the old man did him the honor of despising him. To later adopt the old man's nom de plume may well have been an act both of piety and penitence.

ago when steamboats were plying the river their boilers would build up excessive steam pressure from time to time; relieving that pressure was naturally known as "letting off steam," and it has come to describe the human emotion off getting rid of tension.
Many young lads of that era carried the name of Willy, or Wilbur, or William, largely due to their German or English descent. They would use the Ohio River to journey to the hills of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennesse. They became known as "hill billys."
"I cotton to you," became a phrase that mean "I like you," because the raw cotton that was the chief cargo on riverboats stuck to your clothes.
Some people carried fiddles with them and would play along the riverbanks and wharves for pennies. If you didn't work, you were accused of "fiddlin' around."
The "outland" was considered to be anything west of the Mississippi River, and early pioneers who traveled there were called "outlanders." Their rowdy behavior and loud clothing were thought by many to be "outlandish."
There is so much about The River . . . so much tradition, so much history, so much adventure. It is a force unto itself. He was reminded of this by a song lyric composed and sung by one of the boat’s entertainers, Bob Sembiante:

The Paper • Page 4 • February 2, 2017 Arrest Made in 2002 Escondido Homicide
On September 10, 2002 at Dee’s Sports Tavern, 426 N. Rose St, Hector Mendieta (DOB 8-15-81) and Bartolo Velador (DOB 9-24-66) were in a physical altercation. During the fight, Mendieta stabbed Velador and fled the scene. Velador later died as a result of his injuries. As Escondido Police Detectives began working the case, they learned that Mendieta fled the country into Mexico. Detectives developed probable cause to believe Mendieta was responsible for the murder, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
In 2012 this case was re-initiated by the Escondido Police Department Cold Case Homicide Unit. Believing there was still sufficient evidence to charge Mendieta with murder, in 2013 the Cold Case Unit requested the assistance of the US Marshal’s San Diego Fugitive Task Force in an effort to locate and arrest Mendieta. In June of 2016 the US Marshal’s San Diego Fugitive Task Force located Mendieta in Mexico, and Mexican authorities arrested him for the warrant. After a lengthy extradition process, Mendieta was flown to the United States and delivered to officers from the Escondido Police Department. Mendieta, now 35 years old, was later booked into the Vista Detention Facility for First Degree Murder.

The Escondido Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Saturday, January 28, at 2nd Avenue and Broadway. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.
High Visibility Enforcements, which include DUI/Drivers License checkpoints, have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive alcohol or drug impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers. Following are other results from this event: 1917 vehicles drove through the checkpoint. 671 vehicles were screened in primary. 50 vehicles were sent to secondary screening (drivers who could not produce a driver’s license or who were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs) 24 total citations were issued during the checkpoint. (6 for suspended license and 11 for unlicensed driver, 6 for no insurance.) 1 DUI arrest. 4 Field Sobriety Tests Educational material was distributed regarding DUI problems.

On Friday, January 27, at 2:14 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the 4600 block of Park Drive. The caller reported that a female was screaming and stated a male tried to attack her. The suspect was described as a unknown race light skinned male adult, late 30’s or early 40’s, wearing a black ski mask and dark clothing.
Officers responded to the scene and located a female victim. The victim stated an unknown race light skinned male adult entered her home through an unlocked front door screen, tied her up, and began to search the residence. The victim was able to escape the residence and ran outside. A neighbor standing outside, heard the screaming, and observed the suspect run away from the residence. The neighbor tackled the suspect and wrestled him to the ground. The suspect was able to escape and was chased, by the neighbor, to the area of Cove Drive and Park Drive.

Yolanda York, a public relations specialist for Social Security tells of how delighted she was at the Sand Down program when she met with a veteran who was frustrated by a $500 overpayment due Social Security; he also had a $1200 a month veteran’s disability. Yolanda told him he’d be eligible for a $600 additional Social Security benefit in three years time. He was unaware that you can collect both veteran’s benefits and Social Security. He was delighted at the news and Yoland was delighted to help him. The Social Security team helped around 19 separate veterans with Social Security issues. Yolanda simply shines when she’s able to give information to help someone gain all of their Social Security benefits. Stay tuned for more similar information.

The investigation into the Home Invasion and Attempted Robbery is ongoing. Serious Injury Accident - Escondido
On January 27, 2017 at about 1:22 AM officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched along with the Escondido Fire Department to the area of Centre City Parkway at Country Club Lane regarding a serious injury collision. Officers arrived and located two involved vehicles.
Based on witness statements and physical evidence at the scene it appears a 21 year old male was driving south on Centre City Parkway in a white 2016 Ford Focus. A 30 year old male driver in a white Kia Sorrento was making a left turn from Centre City Parkway to westbound Country Club Lane. The two vehicles collided causing major injuries to two of the three passengers in the Ford Focus. The driver of the Kia did not have any passengers on board and had only a complaint of pain.
One of the female passengers in the Ford Focus suffered traumatic head injury and serious injury to her heart. These injuries are considered life threatening. The second female passenger suffered a punctured lung and a serious spinal injury. There was evidence at the scene that the driver of the Ford Focus had been drinking alcohol. The other driver had
not been drinking and impairment was not a factor. The traffic investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Officer Kyle Beierly of the Traffic Division. Traffic officers have developed probable cause to arrest Gerardo Morales for felony DUI with injury. Morales is a 21 year old resident of Vista, Ca. He was treated and released from the hospital and later booked into the Vista Detention Center. Morales is being charged with one count of DUI with injury, a felony.

Home Burglary - San Marcos
Investigators from the San Marcos Sheriff's Station want your help in identifying a man wanted in connection with a home burglary in San Marcos.
If you have any information on the suspect or this incident, call the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
It happened around 10:00 a.m. on January 23rd at a home in the 3500 block of Grand Avenue in San Marcos. As you can see in the video, the suspect forced his way into the house through a locked, side bedroom window after breaking the glass. The suspect ransacked the home and stole jewelry.

Sadly, the team that hundreds of thousands of loyal San Diego Charger fans have supported for years has now left San Diego. This is the same team that left Los Angeles after its first year in the upstart American Football League in 1961. It is also the team that a few years later, won the 1963 AFL Championship game in Balboa Stadium. I remember it well. I was a young boy when my father: long time real estate broker: James L. Lambert started a family tradition by regularly supporting the Chargers. By the time the team started playing at ‘Jack Murphy Stadium’, many such North County and San Diego families enjoyed seeing ‘the local team’ play during each fall season. By the time I got out of college and started my career in the banking industry, I really enjoyed sitting near my parents as they cheered on the local team. Over time I would go to the Sunday afternoon games with friends and members of my own family. Sadly that is now gone for thousands of us.
For a long time Mr. Spanos and his family were residents in La Jolla. They were blessed with a large home with tremendous views of the La Jolla coastline. It staggers my mind that they would walk away from not only this picturesque and beautiful area but a city that so faithfully supported their team. It was only in the last 5 years or so when rumors of the team leaving did fan support wane. While the voters rejected their tax payer supported move to down town, the logical suggestion to build a new stadium in Mission Valley was rejected by the Spanos family. Certainly, Mission Valley seemed to be the best location for a new stadium. It would have been the most cost effective and certainly the best location for transporting fans to the stadium. AND, the city was willing to give the team 166 acres for a 100 year lease at the cost of only $1 a year. Yet, Mr. Spanos said no and our beloved city lost its 3rd national professional sports franchise (the NBA Rockets & Clippers being the others) in the last 40 years. How sad.

Apples and Oranges
Dear Editor,
I enjoy The Paper; some of the Chuckles are especially worth keeping.
The front page articles are interesting and educational. The one I just finished is by Friedrich Gomez and titled America's Silent Majority. He's obviously a very good writer. I believe he is correct in noting that most Americans would be surprised to know that the largest ethnic group in the nation is German-American.
I was surprised. Growing up in Michigan, I didn't even visit Frankenmuth, MI till I went back there for a visit one time! But I did spend the summer between my Junior and Senior high school years as a foreign exchange student to Germany. I even have GermanJewish ancestry on my maternal grandfather's side.
The reason I am writing is because as I was reading the article, it was already in my mind to brace myself in case a particular comparison was made between the anti-German feelings during WWI and the antiMuslim feelings today. And then it reared its verboten head on the page right in front of me. Although I wasn't around near the turn of the 20th Century, I doubt the GermanAmericans were going to places of worship that promoted things like Sharia law or jihad or anti-American sentiments.
Although Mr. Gomez did not pen the original comparison - he was quoting author Erik Kirschbaum he would not have included it in his composition if he didn't sympathize with that view. The Germans were persecuted, at other times in our history it was the Irish, then the Chinese and if you recall the Zoot Suit wars of the 40's, at that time it was the Hispanics.
All of those acts came of ignorance and unrealistic fears, often helped along by Progressive leaders like President Wilson. The greatest ignorance occurring today regarding the Muslims is that most Americans do not seem to know that first, they are not strictly a religious faction. They are every bit as much a political and militant organization as they are a religious one.
Second, they have one solitary mission - to convert or annihilate any and all peoples of the world who are not of the Muslim faith. A third thing is that they are making a steady and successful move on our very own country. They do this through the 30-year-old refugee resettlement program. They do it by getting positions in the government. They do it by holding jihadist meetings in their mosques and creating terrorist cells wherever they can.
I personally know a former Marine and Viet Nam Vet who has made it his personal mission to visit mosques and research the goings-on and keep
a steady watch on activities of Muslims in America, especially in San Diego where there is a high level of activity. Make no mistake, they are brilliantly planning to infiltrate and eventually wage war from within.
This is much like the Socialist/ Communist movement. It will be interesting to see which ideologue will be the most successful. But to my point. There really is no comparison, and as soon as the attempt to compare the German-American persecution to the legitimate wariness we have of Muslims in our country popped out from the article, I knew I had to voice my view. So there you have it. If I sound like an alarmist, it's because we had better become alarmed at the truth, which is all I have stated.

Assembly Back to Work
Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon has appointed me to serve on six committees for the new two-year session.
I'm excited to be re-appointed to Health Committee and address many issues important to my district, including access and affordable health insurance, Medi-Cal and Denti-Cal, clinics, mental health treatment and long-term care facilities.
My experience as a city councilmember helps as Vice Chair of Local Government Committee, involving land use, housing, infrastructure financing, charter cities, state mandates and other issues with major local impacts here at home. With five gaming of eight total federally recognized Tribal Governments in the 75th Assembly District, I am re-appointed to the Governmental Organization Committee, with responsibilities over Indian gaming, horse-racing, gambling, tobacco, public records, emergency services and natural disasters.
I will also serve as Vice Chair of the Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media Committee, dealing with policies affecting the entertainment industries, tourism, arts and museums, professional and amateur sports including the regulation of athlete agents, and Internet media.
I will continue to serve on the Joint Rules Committee, governing legislative rules and other matters relating to Assembly business and have been appointed to the Legislative Ethics Committee, which helps ensure the honest, ethical and transparent functioning of the Legislature. In addition to committees, I will continue as Minority Floor Leader working with my Democratic counterpart to help ensure smooth floor operations and parliamentary procedure so that all key policy measures receive full and fair consideration.
I am looking forward to a productive session as I continue to serve the people of this wonderful district.

Oceanside Mural Initiative Launched by MainStreet Oceanside – MainStreet Oceanside (MSO) is launching the Oceanside Mural Initiative (OMI); the objective of which is to transform downtown Oceanside into a public arts destination through the creation of unique, visually captivating murals in the downtown area, to highlight this beach community and its unique and diverse character. OMI, through MSO, is issuing a request for artists to submit proposals to create a mural in 2017. Artists do not need to be residents of Oceanside to apply, but must have an interest in enhancing the downtown Oceanside community. Artists do not need to have previous mural experience, but are expected to possess the necessary skills and expertise to create a mural. Selected artists must be capable of providing a professional and quality service while working in tandem with the property owner and respective agencies (business and residential) invested in the downtown community. From the initial artist request process, a small selection of finalists will be chosen to submit renderings of their mural concepts. Final muralists will be selected from these concept renderings. The first muralist will receive a stipend of $6,000. Muralist is responsible for all costs associated with creation of the mural including materials, rentals, insurance, and any fees associated with the installation. The Real Tragedies of the USS Indianapolis
Among the many tragic stories of World War II, the sinking of the USS Indianapolis resulted in a miscarriage of justice that sent its skipper to his doom. Capt. Charles B. McVay III was the commanding officer of the heavy cruisier USS Indianapolis (CA-35) when it was lost in July 1945, after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, I-58.
The Indianapolis departed Tinian after delivering the two atomic weapons to the U.S. Army Air Corps destined for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The ship’s mission was top secret and had no escort destroyers protecting it. Because of the secrecy, none of the surrounding fleet knew of the ship’s mission or whereabouts even after delivering its cargo. As the ship was going down, SOS calls for help went unheeded because ships in the area thought the signals might be a Japanese trap trying to lure U.S. ships. The submarine attack on the Indianapolis resulted in a massive loss of life. More than 300 of the ship’s 1,100-man crew were lost, primarily to sharks as well as wounds sustained in the torpedo attack. It took five days before a Navy scout plane finally spotted the survivors.
While the surviving crew was lauded as heroes, the Navy, not wanting to admit to the tragic mistake of not protecting one of its capital ships, decided someone had to take the blame. Of all the captains in the history of the United States Navy, McVay is the only one court-martialed for losing a ship sunk by an act of war. The fact he was on a top-secret mission maintaining radio silence fell on deaf ears in Washington. Even JapaneseCommander MochitsuraHashimotoI, who sunk the Indianapolis, testified in McVay’s behalf. He told the court there was no way the American skipper could have avoided the attack. The surviving Indianapolis crewmembers knew their captain was being sacrificed. Nonetheless, for years the captain was deluged with hate mail and harassing phone calls from family members of those lost at sea. McVay’s record up until the sinking was superb. He guided the Indianapolis through the invasion of Iwo Jima, then the bombardment of
Okinawa in the spring of 1945. For years the Navy claimed the Indianapolis’ SOS messages were never received because the ship was operating under a policy of radio silence. However, declassified records now show that three SOS messages were received separately, but none were acted upon because one the officers thought it was a Japanese ruse, another had given orders not to be disturbed, and a third was drunk.
Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander of the Pacific Fleet, issued McVay a letter of reprimand for not using the “zig-zag” maneuver. However, in Washington, D.C., Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Ernest King overturned Nimitz’s decision and recommended a court-martial.
In his book Abandon Ship, author Richard F. Newcomb suggests one possible motive for Admiral King's ordering McVay's court-martial. According to Captain McVay's father, Admiral Charles B McVay Jr: "'King never forgot a grudge," he replied in anger. King had been a junior officer under the old man's command when King and other junior officers sneaked some women aboard a ship. Admiral McVay had letter of reprimand placed in King's record. "Now," he raged to his son, "King's used you to get back at me.'"
American submarine experts testified that "zigzagging" was a technique of negligible value in eluding enemy submarines. Sub Commander Hashimoto also testified in agreement.Despite that testimony, the official ruling was that visibility was good, and the court held McVay responsible for failing to zigzag.
On Nov. 6, 1968, Captain McVay committed suicide by shooting himself at his Litchfield, Conn., home. USS Indianapolis survivors organized, and many spent years attempting to clear their skipper's name. Ironically, more than 50 years after the incident, a 12-year-old Pensacola, Fla., student, Hunter Scott, was instrumental in raising awareness of the miscarriage of justice carried out at the captain's court-martial. As part of a school project for the National History Day program, the young man interviewed nearly 150 survivors of the Indianapolis sinking and reviewed 800 documents. His testimony before Congress brought national attention to the McVay case. In October 2000, the United States Congress passed a resolution that McVay's record should reflect that "he is exonerated for the loss of the USS Indianapolis." President Clinton also signed the resolution. Commander Hashimoto died Oct. 25, five days before McVay’s exoneration. In July 2001, Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England ordered McVay's official Navy record purged of all

Escondido Charitable Foundation Announces Availability of Grants – An affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, the Escondido Charitable Foundation (ECF) announced its annual call for grant applications. In its 10th grant cycle, ECF invites nonprofit organizations and agencies to submit proposals that support programs investing in our youth. ECF believes Escondido’s young people are among the city’s strongest assets and can help fulfill the vision of a better Escondido. Projects can focus on a broad range of areas, including leadership and responsibility, enrichment programs, community and cultural engagement, job and life skills. The goal is to engage youth in the community and develop in them a strong civic responsibility, building toward a future with heavy community involvement. Eligible nonprofit organizations serving Escondido may submit proposals of $15,000 to $35,000. History Museum Honors Pearl Harbor Hero A permanent exhibition at the Valley Center History Museum honoring local veterans has been expanded to recognize the late A. Kenneth Hartle who earned fame as a hero at Pearl Harbor during World War II.
A Valley Center resident for 55 years, he died January 24 at age 103. He had been the Commemorative Flag Presented to Navy's oldest Vietnam Veterans surviving s a l vage diver. Hartle was a deep sea master diver who repeatedly risked death, according to documentation at the Valley Center Historical Society. Certified to dive underwater at 100 feet, he often went far beyond that depth to tow away unexploded torpedoes, salvage downed ships and planes sunk by the Japanese, and retrieve bodies. Hartle joins other Valley Center veterans in an exhibit titled "Honoring pictured Matt Foster, Wanda Prosser, Our Local Heroes". Included are tributes to Capt. Lester Rice, comTom Gowan manding officer of the aircraft carCommander VFW Post 1513 in Escondido rier USS Valley Forge; Capt. EAA Scholarship Deadline Nears - The Escondido Art Association's 2017 Art Scholarship Program for graduating seniors
enrolled in any Escondido-based high school is well underway with President, Byron Marler and Publicity Co-Chair, Rosemarie Woldin, having already visited many of the Escondido high schools to give a brief presentation on the program to enthusiastic art students and teachers. All Escondido high school seniors who will be graduating this year are invited to participate. The $1,000 scholarship is being made available through the generous sponsorship of Design Moe Kitchen & Bath, Escondido. Prize money will be awarded in three categories: $500/First Place; $300/Second Place; and $200/Third Place. Students are judged on their submissions of three pieces of artwork (at least one original), an essay about their interest in art, and a letter of recommendation from their guidance counselor or art teacher. Popularity of this program has grown, with an average of about 70 pieces of artwork being submitted each year. The deadline for all entries to be submitted to the Artists Gallery at 121 W. The Prologue and Epilogue
February never seemed like a very exciting month. It doesn’t have New Year’s Eve, Ides of March, April showers, May flowers, or June weddings. Yet, it does have two of America’s most famous birthdays, George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s. Fortunately, neither of these men sought deification, i.e. worship as gods such as the Caesars of Rome. In fact, they avoided any attempt to make themselves more than mere men. What I like about them is that they saw themselves as servants of the people. Neither died in the heroics of a battle – Washington with a deadly cold(Quinsy disease) and Lincoln by assassination. We Americans paid them due homage in the ritual of death and places of burial, but no

Yelp and the small business
Yelp is a “Crowd sourced Internet business review site.” Yelp offers local business search, rating, and reviews. It also has a food delivery and reservations service. Yelp sounds like a great idea. It is a forum for ordinary people to share their experiences with local businesses (good or bad). Ideally it should provide an incentive for businesses to treat their customers well. Positive revues would reward good business and negative reviews would penalize poor performers. It would seem to be a perfect system to promote good businesses and weed out the stinkers. To a certain extent this is true but there is an element that make most small businesses despise Yelp. It’s the human factor.

If each customer was forced to give a review (on a scale of one to five) after each service experience, this system would work perfectly; every business would be fairly evaluated and rated against others. That of course is not the way Yelp works. Yelping is voluntary so very few folks actually take the time and trouble to review a business. When they do there is often a strong emotional incentive to do so.
In the case of The Computer Factory, we had only six reviews going back to 2010. Three were “five star,” three were “one star.” That gives us a very mediocre “three star” rating. During that time period we had over 12,000 transactions (sales orders and work orders). Those six reviews indicate that one out of every 4000 customers really love us and one out of every 4000 really hate us. Someone browsing Yelp might see that “three star” rating and conclude that we are a very mediocre place to take their PC. Conversely Joe Baggadonuts’ Computer Service might have a “five stare” rating. He lives in his car and fixes PCs when he’s sober. He got his mother, his X-wife and his parole officer to write positive reviews so he’s got a “five star” rating and doesn’t even own a computer.
Joe Baggadonuts may be an extreme example but goofy stuff often affects the Yelp ratings of small businesses. Of the three

Yelp can be useful in helping to screen product and service providers when you have no other information, but be careful. The Yelp ratings of many small businesses can be poisoned by individuals and competitors who have an agenda that really has nothing to do with the business itself. Most business owners can relate horror stories about customers attempting to extort discounts or special treatment with the “Yelp bomb” threat.
