Hilary Johnson was 57 when she decided she’d had enough — enough of her job, enough caretaking for her 93-year old mother, and especially enough of her 28-year marriage. So, she did something many people fantasize about, but until recently was unthinkable: She walked away from it all. “Sometimes divorce is the only option,” says Ms. Stephens, now 58. adult daughters, who she’s maintained contact with, Ms. Stephens moved from Maryland to the Philadelphia area, re-entered business and now heads up a nonprofit organization that advises those who wish to end their longterm marriages. “Sure, the transition was painful at first,” she says. “Many of my friends had a hard time understanding why Mark and I were divorcing. My daughters were shaken, but when I explained

I’d always love their father, and would continue to be an integral part of the family, but that I had to live out my life with my new partner Sherri, the only person I’d ever really loved. They listened, and went along with my decision, even if they didn’t fully accept it.” Now 3 years downstream from the divorce, Hilary wishes she’d made the decision to divorce sooner. “Mark,” her former husband, “has been wonderfully understanding. He says he

sensed a barrier, an invisible impediment between us that he could never cross. After a while he gave up trying. I apologized for my failings, telling him that since college, both Sherri and I had lived a life of deceit that we both detested, but from which we could not escape.” She smiles. “Early in our marriages, Sherri and I managed to sneak off to be alone twice or three times a year. Then we’d trudge back to our traditional life, feeling guilty and less than

Tears fill her eyes. “Sherri and I would have long conversations via long distance, early mornings or late nights. Sometimes I’d call her and when she’d answer, say nothing, just listen to her breathe. We’d write long letters. I even rented a post office box so no one would intercept or question our correspondence.” I think it is easy to say, Hilary and Sherri were in love, and one can understand her desire to divorce. Tammy Wynette’s famous song, “D-I-V-O-R-CE,” rings the chimes for many senior citizens who share Hilary’s anguish. Life style authorities call these “silver” or “gray” divorces. Gray divorce numbers are rising as they become more and more accept-

Over 65 Divorce Increase Other Age Groups Divorce Stabilizes Today, almost one third of those over 65 will end their marriage in divorce. Paradoxically, divorce rates among other age groups havedropped or plateaued. One explanation for this increase is that many older people have been married before; divorce rate among the previously married is about two and a half times larger than the general population. Why? Most marriage authorities attribute grappling with blended families, dealing with the financial challenges of divorce and having a lesser disposal income tends to doom second or third marriages. Life expectancy also plays a role in today’s trend to terminate marriages. In the past, “People died earlier,” says Pepper Schwartz, Professor of

Buttocks clenched, Hebert performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left. He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.

Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it apart to reveal his stained T-shirt underneath. With a final flourish, he tears the T-shirt from his body, and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay. Having seen enough, Thibodeaux rushes in and says, "What da world you doing, Hebert?"

“Now, let’s say you’re 50 or 60. You could live for 30 or more years. And while your marriage may not be horrible, it’s no longer satisfying or loving. So, people ask themselves, ‘Do I really want 30 more years of this?’ Increasingly, their answer is ‘No’ and divorce occurs.” In some states, those divorcing must attend counseling from state-approved professionals. “Often this is a waste of time and resources,” says Anthony Wiggins, a 20-year veteran counselor. “Often those aged 55 and over have already made up their minds to move on. Secondly, they’re willing to live alone rather than make changes in their personal behaviors that would save the marriage. Finally, they’re familiar with the financial upheaval that divorce often brings. Roughly 40 per cent have already entered into agreements with new partners, or they’ve made other plans, so no amount of counselling will change their minds. They’re just not willing to compromise and stay in ‘adequate’ or ‘okay’ rela-

tionships.”

‘Adequate’ is not a description of a successful relationship for many couples today. And, divorce or separation no longer carries the stigma it once did. A good example is Al Gore. The former US senator and vice president, famous for blowing the whistle on climate change told CNN his marriage to wife Tipper, had become adequate, when they decided to part ways in 2010 after 40 years of marriage and four children. While they’ve not yet terminated their marriage, both live as if that were the case. Divorce Is Not a Dirty Word

The onus of divorce no longer keeps a politician from running for office. This bugaboo was laid to rest by Ronald Reagan, the first divorced American President. This opened the door for our current occupant of the Oval Office, who has walked the marriage aisles three times.

While no one can say with authority why late-life divorce has grown so quickly, one reason seems to be the changing status of women – they initiate about 60 percent of divorces after age 40, according to AARP. The fight to overturn the Escondido City Council’s approval of a 380-home project on the site of the former Escondido Country Club took a series of twists this week.

In November, a Superior Court Judge dismissed all claims by a homeowner’s group contesting the 2017 approval of The Villages development project at the shuttered golf course.

But on Thursday, the group filed an appeal that could potentially extend the protracted court battle for another year or longer. However, on Friday, development company New Urban West sent a letter offering to settle the lawsuit. It’s the first settlement offer made in the yearold case. New Urban West seeks discussions and negotiations to possibly reimburse all members of ECCHO the funds they had contributed to fund the lawsuit. The amount would have to be determined through discussions and negotiations. ECCHO was to have met this

Editor’s Notes:

Item #1 - There were at least three (3) complaints of Domestic Violence filed against Mr Geary by three (3) different individuals. We acknowledge all three (3) were resolved without going to trial. However, the

past Monday to discuss various issues, this is likely to be one of them.

New Urban West has maintained for years that anything less than 380 homes on the 109-acre site would not be economically feasible. The future of the property has been hotly debated ever since the Country Club land was purchased in 2012 by Beverly Hills speculator Michael Schlesinger, who shuttered the club and golf course a few months later, saying it was financially unsustainable. A series of court challenges, a public vote and other things ensued as residents of the area protested development plans.

Schlesinger sued the city, saying the City Council’s move in 2013 declaring the property could only be used for recreation or open space, violated his property rights. A judge agreed and the city then settled the suit.

Schlesinger then chose New Urban West to pursue development permits and agreed to sell them the land only after all permissions to build had been obtained, and only after all litigation had ceased.

If an appeal is pursued, an action most legal experts say would not be successful, the transfer of the land and the beginning of construction could be delayed by 18 months or longer.

fact remains that three (3) individuals were so upset and/or frightened of Mr. Geary that they filed a Domestic Violance complaint. Not one (1), three (3).

Item #2. Mr. Davis was not the only person who heard the racist/derogatory remarks by Dave Geary. Other members and Evelyn Madison also heard the remark and has so testified, under oath. Item #3 He has not apologized to Ms. Madison in person, in writing, or in front of the Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club. It was recommended by the board that he do so but it never happened and Ms. Madison resigned from the club both because of Mr. Geary’s actions as well as the club and its board of directors not protecting her from Mr. Geary.

Item #4 - No offer of $3000 was ever made to Mr. Geary not one dime was offered to him. To say othewise is an out and out lie; he was offered a chance to “cease and desist”

younger than 50 is about twice as high as it is for those 50 and older. Since 1990, divorces have climbed slightly for adults ages 40 to 49, though not as greatly as those 50 and older. Blame The Baby Boomers

Many experts on American social trends blame this rise in divorce for adults over 50 on aging Baby Boomers. This segment now makes up the bulk of this age group - in 2015, Boomers ranged in age from 51 to 69. Earlier, they had unprecedented numbers of divorces. This marital instability is driving the rising divorce rate for the over 50 age group today. Why? As we learned earlier, tying the knot the second time is often riskier than first time marriages. So, is your marriage safe?

It depends. Statistically, if you’re over 50 and remarried, your risk of divorce is twice that of those who have been married only once. Another interesting fact: Adults 50 and older made up 48% of all divorces in 2016. Man About Town Cont. from Page 4

intimidating Ms. Madison but he ignored the demand letter. After the 30 days to respond had elapsed, Ms. Madison had no option but to file suit in order to protect herself and hold Mr. Geary accountable. Item #5 - The court records obtained by former Lt. Governor Lori Butler were turned over to Evelyn Madison and so testified to, under oath.

Summary: Mr. Geary continues to deny his actions and refuses to be held accountable though he has had many opportunities.

The Paper stands by our account of the story and the documented statements and allegations of witnesses and/or participants in this ongoing drama.

Another fact: Orange County California has one of the highest divorce rates in the nation. On average, 33 people in O.C. initiate divorce proceedings every day – including weekends. That’s a lot of broken vows, broken homes and broken hearts. What A Divorce Mediator Says

Lynne Diamond is an Orange County divorce mediator with 17 years-experience, who has dual master’s degrees from Columbia University in Education and Counseling. She agrees that life can often be like a country song with many aches and pains, but she doesn’t agree that divorce is the recipe for happiness after dumping their lyin’, cheatin’, thievin’ spouses. She’s quick to point out that upwards of 40 percent of married couples experience infidelity. And despite this high percentage, most of those involved—even those who stray - say that cheating is wrong. So why does it happen so often?

Sadly, Diamond says the list of reasons is long. “A common reason is frustration. This trig-

So, sex becomes an important path to connection and intimacy.” She points out if men aren't sexually satisfied whatever the reason, maybe their wives are too busy, or the kids keep interrupting, they’ll translate this into rejection SMART ASS ANSWER #2

A truck driver was driving along on the freeway and noticed a sign that read: Low Bridge Ahead. Before he knows it, the bridge is right in front of him and his truck gets wedged under it. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally a police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, "Got stuck," huh?' The truck driver says, "No, I was delivering this bridge and I ran out of gas."

SMART ASS ANSWER OF THE YEAR: A teacher reminds her class of tomorrow's final exam. "Now class, I won't tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury, illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that's it, no other excuses whatsoever!" A smart-ass student in the back of the room raised his hand and asks, "What would you say if tomorrow I said I was suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?"

The entire class is reduced to laughter and snickering. When silence was restored, the teacher smiled knowingly at the student, shook her head and sweetly said, "Well, I guess you'd have to write the exam with your other hand."

which leads to feeling they are "unloved." On the other hand, Diamond says, “Women cheat to fill an emotional void. They frequently complain of disconnection from a spouse and wish to be desired and cherished.” An affair is more often a "transitional" partner for the woman. She’s seriously looking to leave her marriage and this other person helps her do just that.

“That's not to say that sexual satisfaction isn't a primary driver of affairs for wives as well as husbands,” Diamond adds, “it’s what I hear must often.” Diamond also believes that society as a whole resorts to divorce too quickly, often without any real cause. Just as county music songs capture the joys and aches of marriage and country roads are supposed to take us home and often don’t, Lynne says that research shows most married couples cannot recall what the spat was about 48 hours later. “Most of us will forget why we’re upset about a problem

within three days,” she says. “Unless the problem is ongoing, such as drug and alcohol abuse or espousal violence, we tend to dismiss the ‘why’ of the incident and dwell on our hurt feelings.” She adds, “Most reasons couples give for divorcing a partner could be rectified by early counseling and communications training.” Lynne feels that like that country road, “Every marriage has rough patches. Some are short. Some are, well, not so short, but if a marriage is built on love, trust and shared experiences and if either partner has a desire, a commitment, to save the relationship, it can be done.”

Her goals in mediation are to reduce the stress and improve communications, hoping the couple will reconcile. “Many couples are highly competitive, hence they are unwilling to give their mate credit or recognition for their contributions.” Lynne illustrates this by reciting a case history. “The wife was the oldest of four daughters. Her mother relied on her to buy prescriptions and perform other health care functions. To off-set this time away from her married family, the wife arranged with her employer to leave work an hour earlier on those days her mother needed her, without losing pay. For 3 years she dutifully took care of her mother’s needs, picked her two-year old daughter up from child care and was home in time to start the evening meal. Her husband said nothing of his wife’s contributions. In retrospect, perhaps he was unaware of her sacrifices. In any case, the wife grew increasingly upset that he never noticed her diligence, and this became the trigger in a series of ‘you-don’tappreciate-me’ arguments that led to their divorce.” Regardless of Diamond’s efforts, the majority of her clients end up getting divorced, but she insists this does not have to be so. “Divorce is an expensive solution that may or may not resolve a problem. Research shows that those issues that caused the first divorce will be present in the second marriage as well.” As that country song says, “How can I forget you, if you

won’t go away?” What If It Happens to You?

While some might argue that divorce is divorce, late-life divorce presents unusual challenges. You and your spouse don’t just have years of history together – you have decades! Your family, friends, and neighbors, know you as “a couple.” Facing those people as “newly single” can be terrifying.

Getting divorced is expensive at any age. But the older you are, the more complicated your finances have likely become. Most middle-aged couples probably have a house, several vehicles, and (hopefully) retirement accounts. What about the mortgage? Car loans? Credit card bills? And let’s not forget the small (or maybe not so small) mountain of student loans you took out, or cosigned, for your children. All of this makes divorce financially complicated. In a family business? More complications. A rule of thumb, the more complex your finances, the more expensive your divorce. And divorce after 50 causes a significantly bigger financial strain than divorce at a younger ages because Father Time is peaking around the corner and you have less time to financially recover. Earlier in life, you had time to bounce back from financial setbacks, thus now you should be more conservative in your and probably have to play the hand you’re dealt - time for more schooling, or another degree isn’t possible. So, if you are facing divorce after 50, what do you do? How can you lessen the impact of your divorce so that it doesn’t ruin what’s left of your life?

1. Get professional help. Do not try to go through your divorce alone. At this point in your life, you have way more to lose than your average 20-year old. No argument: You’ll need a lawyer and a certified divorce financial planner. They’ll help you understand your finances and figure out when and if you can retire. Finally, it’s recommended you get a therapist or divorce coach. And please, join a support group. Going through a divorce after 50 can be really tough emotionally. You, and I do mean you, will need support. 2. Consider alternatives to Senior Citizen Divorce Rates Cont. on Page 8

Wise Saving for California

California appears to be flush with cash. Last November, the Legislative Analyst’s office reported a $14.8 billion surplus for the fiscal year beginning July 1st. That was later updated to a projected $20.6 billion, while Governor Newsom’s finance department is predicting a surplus of $21.4 billion. Unfortunately, that surplus can quickly disappear. During the Great Recession, California faced annual budget deficits over $20 billion, a situation that could be repeated when another economic downturn hits. A recession is inevitable; we just don’t know when it will come.

That’s why I supported Proposition 2 in 2014, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters, to strengthen the state’s Budget Stabilization Account (BSA) also known as the ‘Rainy Day Fund,’ first established by voters under Proposition 58 in 2004. However, Prop. 2 appeared to place a 10% cap on the BSA, meaning that when funds held in reserve reached 10% of the state’s tax revenues, no further monies could be deposited.

stating that funds ‘voluntarily’ placed into the reserve by lawmakers should not be counted against the 10 percent cap. Fortunately, in the Counsel’s opinion, the Legislature may continue to deposit additional money into the BSA above the cap, allowing a realistic reserve to accumulate as a cushion against future economic downturns. In his new budget, Governor Newsom has announced that he will rely on this legal opinion and include an additional $13.6 billion to build up the BSA and also to pay down some of the state’s accumulated debt. This was a good decision. We must never return to the days of $20 billion deficits. By building a stronger, more secure Rainy Day Fund, we are taking an important step toward fiscal security and future solvency for the State of California.

Last summer, the Legislative Counsel released a legal opinion

Four old-timers were playing their weekly game of golf, and one remarked how nice it would be to wake up on Christmas morning, roll out of bed and without an argument, go directly to the golf course, meet his buddies, and play a round. His buddies all chimed in and said, "Let's do it!

His wife had never heard him say that so she stayed by his side. A couple minutes later his eyes fluttered open again and he said, "You're cute!" The wife was disappointed because instead of "beautiful" it was "cute."

She said, "What happened to 'beautiful'?" His reply was "The drugs are wearing off!" AN IRISH PAINTER

An Irish painter by the name of Murphy, while not a brilliant scholar, was a gifted and quite famous portrait artist. Over a short number of years, his fame grew and soon people from all over Ireland were coming to the town of Miltown Malbay, in County Clare, to get him to paint their likenesses.

One day, a beautiful, young English woman arrived at his house in a stretch limo and asked if he would paint her in the nude. This being the first time anyone had made such a request he was a bit perturbed, particularly when the woman told him that money was no object; in fact, and she was willing to pay up to 10,000 pounds.

Not wanting to get into any marital strife, he asked her to wait while he went into the house to confer with Mary, his wife. They talked much about the Rightness and Wrongness of it. It was hard to make the decision but finally his wife agreed, on one condition. In a few minutes he returned. "T'would be me pleasure to paint yer portrait, missus," he said "The wife says it's okay."I'll paint you in the nude all right; but I have to at least leave me socks on, so I have a place

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

The Great Life of the Forties and Fifties

Growing up in the forties and fifties was an idyllic time. The nation had just survived a depression, a world war and was beginning a recovery to the American way of life. Detroit was making automobiles again, housewives could now have a new refrigerator, and vets were going to college on the GI Bill. It was a time we’ll never see again.

Some war-time rationing still lingered until the late forties, slowly disappearing as the nation shifted from war production to a domestic footing that allowed an unprecedented opportunity for homebuyers to realize the American dream – buying a home. By the fifties some high school teenagers could own their own car. Depending upon financial status, “Wheels” could range from a Ford jalopy to a near-new Plymouth or Chevy. For myself, I got to drive my Dad’s old 1929 Chevy coupe, which at the time was 24 years old with only 24,000 miles -- the driver’s manual was still in the glove box.

Ford and Chevy were the popular models for young people. You could always tell who the nerds were because they drove a Nash or Hudson. If you didn’t have a Ford V-8 engine you weren’t “cool.” And, you simply had to have a glass-pack muffler for that distinctive V-8 rumble. A lowered (shackled) rear-end was optional, but you stood out from the rest if you also had rear fender skirts. With my Dad’s ’24 Chevy, I was in a class all by myself. Getting a date had its challenges. Girls didn’t want to be seen in “an old car,” when they could be riding in style with other boys. But I had something no one else had: an “Ooogah” horn. Gas in Iowa was a steady .29.9 cents per gallon. We could slip over the Missouri border some 7 miles away and get gas a lot cheaper due to the frequent gas wars. In Kansas City I filled up for .13.9 cents in 1957.

Each industrial company had contributed to the war effort. Some produced the popular GI limousine -the Jeep. Studebaker produced thousands of trucks, which were sent to Russia to use on the Eastern Front against Germany. Ford built B-24 bombers, G.M. and others built everything from trucks to machine guns. After the war, Henry J. Kaiser moved from building Liberty ships to a new line of automobile: the Kaiser. Henry also added a luxury vehicle to his line, the Fraser. From the late forties to the mid-fifties Kaiser was a popular, inexpensive car. In 1948, Preston Tucker, an automotive engineer developed a new, revolutionary car. He was able to build some 51 vehicles before being stopped by the “Big Three Detroit auto builders.

The Tucker was the talk of the automotive world, scaring the heck out of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. But his revolutionary design were too futuristic and it would be several decades before many of his futuristic innovations were embraced by other companies.

MOM’S LOGIC – Somehow mothers have their own peculiar way of making their point by extolling age-old logic to their children. Such as: “Because I said so, that's why,” or “If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you're not going to the store with me.” Another gem: “If you run and fall, breaking your leg, don’t come running to me.” WILL ROGERS: "The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back in your pocket."

SCAG SEZ: It seems like a lot of married folks these days work hard at keeping everything they have, except their spouse. – Cecil Scaglione, Mature Life Features.

Understand your total financial picture before you agree to any settlement. Know the tax implications of money you pay or receive. Know your afterdivorce budget, and make sure you have enough money to live on after the dust settles. Will you be able to afford home ownership? Lifestyle changes are part and parcel of divorce. The older you are, the tougher this may be. There’s a good chance you’ll have to downsize. You may need to delay your retirement. You may need to learn to budget better. You’ll probably need to do more with less. Yes, it sucks that you’ll lose roughly half of your income and assets, and it’s a pity that your golden years may not be quite as golden. But, if you ignore your obviously changed financial circumstances now, you may find that you’re destined to outlive your income. That’ll suck worse. 5. If you’re unemployed, underemployed, or retired, get a job ASAP. Be practical. Investigate programs that’ll give you the potential to make the highest income in the shortest amount of time. (Obviously, you don’t want to do something you hate, so find career options that will let you do something you enjoy.) If you’ll be receiving espousal support, wisdom dictates you should still try to earn as much money as you can while you Social Butterfly Cont. from Page 8

Among the guest singers will be their director, Frederik Otterstad, and his son Ludvig, who will also accompany the choir on both piano and organ. During their Southern California concert tour, the choirs will perform a wide-ranging and interesting repertoire. They will sing sacred music from Norway, from Central America, and from the California Mission tradition. They will also perform a chapter from "Jonah - A Liturgical Drama", the Book of Jonah set to music, as well as selections from Mozart's Requiem. This concert is part of First United Methodist Church’s 2018-19 Music Series, presented as a gift to the community. A free-will offering will be accepted. Bryan Breidenthal founded Vanse Boys’

No matter what you do, or who you are, divorcing after 50, will impact you emotionally, financially, socially, and legally. It’s important you understand the challenges you’re facing. The decisions you make now will have major effects on your future. Understanding the legal and financial implications of divorce gives you a leg up on the emotional issues that will arise. Most importantly, plan for life after divorce. If you do, you’ll be well on your way to creating a happy and healthy post-divorce future. Bodybuilders Pay Homage to Valley Center Strongman - Bodybuilders, not generally thought of as patrons of museums, have been showing up at the Valley Center History Museum in unusual numbers to honor the memory of 'Steve Reeves,’ one of the world's most notable bodybuilders and a Valley Center resident for 43 years. The strongmen have been remembering and celebrating the January birthdate of Reeves at the local museum which has a large collection of memorabilia and mementos which were donated following his death in 2000. On a recent weekday afternoon, seven bodybuilders from California's famed Muscle Beach in Venice visited the museum where a docent shared its collection with the visitors. During his lifetime, Reeves won every major bodybuilding competition in the world, including Mr. America (1947), Mr. World (1949) and Mr. Universe (1950). In 2008, when the museum opened an exhibit featuring trophies and photos of Reeves, then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, also one of the most notable figures in bodybuilding, wrote to

In his previous home, he got along with other dogs, a cat and children, so he would be great for practically any family! WHEN WILL THEY EVER LEARN?

The popular song by Peter, Paul, and Mary, “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” has a question that could well be asked today, “When will they ever learn?” The song is directed to the human weakness of destruction, destruction of humanity and our environment. Will we ever learn of the dire consequences of war and the exploitation of our natural resources? Man’s inhumanity to man has taken the lives of billions. Irresponsible acts have exploited our natural resources. It ought to alarm us to see the exhaustion of our soil with chemical fertilizers, depleting the natural minerals. The use of pesticides and herbicides are killing off necessary insects, such as bees- all for the profitability of higher yields. And

we are plagued with wars that cost the lives of thousands of lives annually, often killed with the equipment of war, as nations compete for the sale of armaments to anxious and fearful governments. Who is responsible for all of this? More so, what price do we pay? The song, “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” is relevant. Thank God we still have some flowers. Yet, in much of the world and yes, in America too, they are disappearing. Do we see them leaving? Before they all go, will we ever learn?

In the wanton loss of human life due to war and, who knows what other effects, to drugs and contaminated food with pesticides and herbicides, we have created a world of self-destruct. Hillel, a Rabbi of the first century, gives us a true sense of personal responsibility when he said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” Who knows where our world would be scientifically and culturally if, in the last century, the nearly billion people whose lives were snuffed out by war, genocide, and disease, would have lived and contributed to each of us in some way? We are all poorer, because of their deaths. “When will we ever learn?” Let’s pray it is soon. For inspiration, counsel, and prayer, call Dial-a-Prayer-760 746-6611.

This week the c o u n c i l approved a resolution against off shore drilling. While it may have been symbolic in nature since we don’t live on the coast, I think it was important to send a signal that we care about the environment for future generations, and we need to get serious about alternative energy sources. I had a mayor’s roundtable meeting with representatives from all areas that make a city rise. Some of those areas were

She spoke about the many ways that they provide hospice care, palliative care and grief support to children and adults who are facing life threatening illnesses. Care is provided in many ways and is designed for each family’s circumstances. Members asked many questions and were interested to learn what hospice care is and is not. Hospice care has come a long way from when it was seen only as providing support for the terminally ill. The recycling industry is currently going through a serious downturn. This downturn stems from something that has become all too common in recycling programs across North America: recycling contamination, or the percentage of trash mixed with recyclables.

Today, the average contamination rate sits at around 25%. That means that about 1 in 4 items placed in a recycling container is actually not recyclable, and this creates enormous

problems for the recycling economy.

Unfortunately, we now have non - recyclables finding their way into the recycling stream –things like plastic bags, organic waste (food, liquid and yard waste), rubber hoses, wires and low grade plastics. These non - recyclables are considered contamination. The sustainability and viability of all recycling programs is dependent upon collecting high quality, high value recyclable materials free of contamination. By working together, we can make recycling great for the environment and make it economically sustainable for years to come.

In part one we defined the two “problem” age groups as the “Ogen” or older generations, born before 1965 and the Ygen, or younger generations, born after 1980. We believe the alienation and antipathy between these age groups has reached unprecedented levels and that the primary driving force has been Internet consumer applications technology,

There have always been “generation Gaps.” Older and younger generations see the world differently. Robert Kennedy expressed Ygens combination of optimism and naivete when he said “I dream things that never were and ask why not.” In their rush to solve the World’s problems the young often fail to consider negative impacts of their “solutions.” The Ogens know

there are no simple solutions. Experience has taught them that actions targeting specific problems usually have unplanned and often negative consequences that can cause even bigger problems. They would rather live with an imperfect status quo than risk the uncertainty of change. The young feel their own world-view to be pure and uncontaminated by the prejudice and greed of their elders. The elders see their own youthful image in the young and assume that time and experience will cause wisdom to eclipse youth’s foolish idealism. This “generation’s gap” has always been with us. The new technology driven “generations gap” we see today is a much different “Gap” altogether.

children to do school work and they gave them mobile phones to maintain contact and keep them safe. The tools computer/communications equipment we provided to our children was not the problem. The problem arose as our children and young adults began to use these devices to access a world of new Internet applications designed especially for them. The only similarity between the browsing habits of Ogen and Ygen is the devices that they use. For Ogen the Internet is a tool for information and communication. For Ygen it is an all absorbing lifestyle. Two fiftyish couples are enjoying a pleasant conversation over dinner at their favorite restaurant. They glance

at the nearby table of four young adults. No conversation is happening. They seem oblivious to one another’s presence as they peck and swipe at the tiny bright screens on the table.

The older couples look at each other in silence and shake their heads sadly. Then they go on with their conversation. A girl looks up from her phone and asks the young man next to her “why are those old people shaking their heads.” The young studies them for a moment, then he grins and says, “My guess would be Parkinson’s” In part III “What’s going to happen?”

The idea that Technology can threaten civilization has a long history. In the tenth century, Pope Innocent II outlawed the use of crossbows in warfare as a threat to Christian civilization. 19th and 20th century advances include steam, rail, electricity, movies, automobiles, radio, TV, computers and now the Internet. Each technology has brought positive changes to our day to day lives, but each was also accompanied by doomsday prophesies of their negative affect on civilization. In the past century four million Americans died and one hundred million were injured in automobile accidents yet we accept this “collateral damage” as the price of progress. Technology has been changing our lives without creating a new “generations gap,” for many generations. Why is today’s technology different? Until the beginning of this century, the “first adopters” of new technology were adults. Adults brought technology home because they planned to use it. They provided computers for their

PETITION FOR APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIAN OF THE PERSON Case # 37-2018-00051141-PRGP-CTL Superior Court of Caalifornia, County of San Diego 1100 Union Street San Diego, CA. 92101 Central Courthouse Family Law

Guardianship of the person of Kaden Dean, Colton Jesina and Dalilah Jesina

Petitioner: Eva Beatty 453 Vale View Dr., Vista, CA. 92081 Phone 760.274.7647

Petitioner requests the court to appoint her as guardian for the children named above. Attorney: Cathryn E. Young, Esq. Griffith, Young & Lass, APC 1525 Faraday Avenue, Suite 140 Carlsbad, CA. 92008 858.345.1720 Fax> 858.345.1725 Email: catie@gylfamilylaw.com

The proposed guardian is NOT related to the child or children named. I am the proposed guardian. I will promplty furnish any information requested by an agency investigating an adoption or a local agency designated by the county to provide public social services. The full legal name and date of birth of each child who needs a guardian is: Kaden Michael Dean, dob 3-10-06 Colton Honza Jesina, dob 11-11/07 Dalilah Hana-Sue Jesina, dob 910-09

The guardianship is necessary or convenient for the reasons given below: I am friends with the children’s mother, Melissa Dean Baumann, who has been incarcerated since July, 2014, sentenced 15 years to life. The whereabouts of their father, Mark Jesina, is unknown. He has made no attempt to contact me or the children since 7/2014. The children have been in my sole custody and care since 7/2014. I have raised them with the help of my husband. Melissa consents to the Legal Guardianship Appointment and has signed over Power of Attorney to me. Attached POA signed 8/1/14 & 3/22/17. I do not believe Father, if located, would contest the guardianship. Pursing legal guardianship will allow me to obtain benefits through the state of California which will be extremely helpful and beneficial for the children. We ask the court to appoint Eva Beatty as guardian of the person of the children named above and issue Letters of Guardianship.

Excuse me from having to give notice of the hearing on the petition to one or more relatives or other persons listed in item 2 of the attached Guardianship Petition Child Information Attachment (form GC-210(CA)) for the reasons given below:

I do not know the known location or wherabouts of Mark Jesina, the children’s father. He has had no contact or made any attempts to contact me or childen since July 2014. Last I heard he was homeless, without a job and has been in and out of jail on drug related offenses.  I will gladly serve by publication if required to so so by the court.

All attachments are made part of this form as though incuded here. There are ___ pages attached to this form. Date: 10/9/18 /s/ Cathryn E. Young, Esq.

I delcare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the State of California that the information stated above is true and correct. Date: 10/8/18 /s/ Eva Beatty Filed: 10/10/2018 DOP: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24 & 1/31/2019
