Volume 49 - No. 02

By Friedrich Gomez

According to the Alzheimer’s Association of America, the most important thing about dementia-related diseases is public awareness and education in taking the proper steps for recognition and early treatment. Since there currently is no known cure for Alzheimer’s, the next best step is prevention or, at the very least, early diagnosis and treatment to try to manage and slow the disease process. As such, this article is dedicated in the hopes of making known the most viable steps for education, treatment, and early awareness of symptoms. Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia is a fastaccelerating peril which is indiscriminate in claiming its victims. In high-profile cases of dementia involving VIPs, political figures, and other famous people, these individuals have often used their celebrity-power and influence to publicize the truth

and awareness of this scourge today. Please, help further the cause of proper awareness and early detection by responsibly sharing this article and its contents with others and become part of the solution.

The list of famous people who fell in the grips of dementia may shock many of you into realizing just how widespread and unknown this serious mental peril really is. The following list of famous people struck by

Alzheimer’s serves only as a sampling and is nowhere complete.

Later in this article, we will offer a short quiz and talk about which symptoms to be aware of; the importance of visiting and asking your family physician questions if you are concerned; the importance of early detection; and what the National Alzheimer’s Association encourages you to do to (hopefully) help prevent dementia or, at least, minimize

your chances of getting it.

But first, let’s take a serious look at some of the world’s most famous individuals and their most remarkable stories of struggles against Alzheimer’s and the inspiring messages and legacies they left behind which continues their fight -- even after their death -- against one of history’s most relentless and ruthless diseases of the human mind: dementia. NORMAN ROCKWELL (1894-1978. Famous American painter Norman Rockwell who was well-known for iconic illustrations on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, succumbed to Alzheimer’s. Rockwell’s paintings are now occasionally used in dementia therapy because of the “memories and nostalgia” they evoke in dementia patients.

FILM STAR, RITA HAYWORTH (1918-1987). Famed American actress Rita Hayworth who rose to prominence in the 1940s was not correctly diagnosed for several years before learning of the

true cause behind her memory loss. Hayworth became the “Face of Alzheimer’s Disease” during the 1980s. This year, the Alzheimer’s Association held its 32nd Annual Rita Hayworth Gala to help promote public awareness.

SINGER PERRY COMO (1912-2001). Popular singer and television personality during the 1950s and 1960s, Perry Como became an iconic figure who performed periodically during his later years, especially during the Christmas Season. Mr. Como suffered from Alzheimer’s for two years before passing away in 2001. Como spent more than 50 years in the entertainment business and was internationally respected in and out of show business. BOXING LEGEND, SUGAR RAY ROBINSON (19211989). Widely recognized as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson died from Alzheimer’s at just 67 years of age. Robinson held both the welterweight and middleweight boxing title belts. It is not currently known whether his head injuries incurred during his boxing matches con-

CIVIL RIGHTS PIONEER, ROSA PARKS (1913-2005). American black civil rights activist, Rosa Parks, was known as “The Mother of the Freedom Movement” after her arrest for refusing to relinquish her bus seat during the Civil Rights Movement. She later wrote an autobiography and continued to live a quiet life before eventually being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

SINGER, GLENN CAMPBELL (1936-2017). Popular American singer and guitarist, Glen Campbell, announced in 2011 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He completed his “Goodbye Tour” after performing for over 50 years in the music and television industry, winning a historic four Grammy Music Awards in 1967. ACTOR, CHARLTON HESTON (1923-2008). Charlton Heston’s most famous movie role was when he portrayed Moses in “The Ten Commandments.” Heston publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Heston left a long "Okay. Thanks."

I love it when a plan works.

ACTOR, PETER FALK (19272011). Peter Falk gained national prominence as a star on the TV series “Columbo.” Towards the end of his life his personal physician reported that Falk could no longer even remember his famous character Columbo. Alzheimer’s disease was one of the underlying causes for his death.

ACTOR, JIMMY STEWART (1908-1997). Jimmy Stewart was one of America’s favorite actors and is immortalized in such films as “Harvey,” “Rear Window” and “It’s a Wonderful Alzheimer’s & Dementia Cont. on Page 3

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile .

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people paddling and 1 person steering, while the American team had 7 people steering and 2 people paddling.

"Um, yeah."

"Okay, citizen, what's your name?"

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion.

"Bobby. Robert, but everyone calls me Bobby."

They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were paddling.

A couple weeks ago I designed an ad with a headline that read "An Urgent Plea from Batman!" along with a photo of Batman. It was an ad urging people to subscribe to The Paper.

"Why, yes, yes it is," I answered.

POLITICIAN, BARRY GOLDWATER (1909-1998). Barry M. Goldwater, 5-time U. S. senator from Arizona and 1964 presidential candidate, ended his public appearances in late 1996 after he suffered a massive stroke. Family members then disclosed that he was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He died at age 89.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

ED SULLIVAN (1901-1974). Though he was many things, including sports and entertainment reporter and syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News, Ed Sullivan was best known for the variety show that bears his name, “The Ed Sullivan Show,” which ran 23 years from 1948 to 1971. In a 2012 radio interview, 38 years after his death, Joan Rivers disclosed that Sullivan had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease toward the end of his life. And in a 1990 press conference, famed Beatles member, Paul McCartney, recalled a meeting with Ed Sullivan in the 1970s. It was a strange encounter. McCartney kept trying to remind Ed that he was one of the Beatles. But, sadly, the elderly Irishman had no clue as to who the man was standing before him. Nor did Sullivan

It was the saddest reunion between the two inexorable forces who changed the world they both lived in. Despite Paul McCartney’s heart-wrenching urgings, the great Ed Sullivan – who once vocalized the greatest introductions in the history of entertainment – fell silent. He could not remember Paul McCartney, whom he once hugged as a son.

Still smiling and nodding, Ed merely shook Paul’s hand. And then he slowly turned. And left.

In early September of 1974, Xrays revealed that Sullivan had advanced esophageal cancer. Doctors gave him very little time to live. Due to his dementia and increasing forgetfulness, the family decided to keep the deadly diagnosis from him. Considering his Alzheimer’s

New Winter Exhibitions at CCAE Museum Opens on January 12th – The Center Museum announces two new winter exhibitions: Manzanar: The Wartime Photographs of Ansel Adams and Wendy Maruyama: Executive Order 9066 art exhibitions open at the California Center for the Arts, Center Museum, on Saturday, January 12th, and will run until March 10th. “Manzanar” is an intimate look through the lens of celebrated photographer, Ansel Adams, at daily life in Manzanar, one of ten Japanese-American incarceration camps in the U.S. during World War II. His work in Manzanar is a departure from his signature style of landscape photography, providing a glimpse into the lives of the thousands of JapaneseAmericans that were interned during one of the darkest moments in U.S. history. In “Executive Order 9066” Wendy Maruyama’s work analyzes the internment camps with a contemporary eye. As a Japanese-American artist, she explores family history and identity through her sculptural work. Executive Order 9066 involves a series of wall-mounted cabinets referencing themes from the internment camps. Also featured are sculptures from Maruyama’s “The Tag Project,” consisting of nearly 120,000 replicas of the paper identification tags that internees were forced to wear. Objects and information from the Japanese American Historical Society of San Diego will also be on view. Admission to the Museum is $8.00 for adults; seniors and students/$5.00, Center members, Military and children under 12 are free. Watching her struggle with her words and her memory, I couldn’t believe it. Such open dialogue and painful sharing of her mother’s dementia greatly promotes “awareness” and “public education” on the value of early detection and treatment. The former Prime Minister’s daughter describes her mother’s struggle and great effort to complete sentences and the sad realization that her mother no longer even remembered where she lived, nor did she recall that her husband Denis Thatcher was long-dead. In November, 2018, the Escondido Police Department initiated a child molestation investigation involving 66-year-old John Rodgers McFarland, a resident of Fullerton, CA. The incidents occurred several years ago when McFarland was visiting relatives in Escondido. McFarland is the current pastor of the Orangethorpe United Methodist Church in Fullerton, CA. On December 18th, John Rodgers McFarland was arrested in Fullerton, with the assistance of the Fullerton and Fountain Valley Police Departments. Immediately following his arrest, search warrants were served at his residence in Fullerton, his place of employment, and the Fountain Valley United Methodist church in Fountain Valley. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility for one count of child molestation. We believe there are additional victims that have yet to be identified in other jurisdictions. Old Palomar Hospital in Downtown Escondido to Convert to 450 Condos

According to plans filed with the city the Palomar Health campus in downtown Escondido, which sold for $18 million nearly a year ago, will be completely torn down and replaced with 450 housing units in 33 separate buildings. Palomar Heights is the new name assigned by the developer, Integral Communities.

Eleven months ago, it was announced Integral Communities had reached an agreement with Palomar Health. Integral, the nation’s 12th largest home builder, is also now constructing a condominium/apartment complex on the site of the former Escondido Police Headquarters on the western end of downtown. “I look forward to seeing the details of the project,” said newly elected Escondido Mayor Paul McNamara. “We’re in the early stages of putting committees together to enhance the downtown. One of the things it will need is people. This project has some promise to bring more people to the downtown.” At the time the sale was announced, the hospital district said it will realize an annual savings of $12 million once the property is sold.

“Integral came to the table with a very creative, well-thought-out use for the entire property,” said Palomar Health Chief Executive Officer Diane Hansen last February. “They were by far the most creative in their use of not only a portion of the current structure, if possible, but also the property surrounding the actual medical campus.”

Lots of Ibuprofen (which is not good for the kidneys); I stayed away from Vicodine and other opioids. One doctor gave me some Oxycotin and it damn near killed me. Will never touch that stuff again. Finally, a beautiful red head who is in real estate in Escondido learned of my pain. She has a husband who is terminally ill and in hospice. She dropped by the house and gave me a bottle of cannabis oil.

I told her I was very hesitant. I am a former heavy smoker (20 years ago), finally quit and didn't want to return to smoking anything; I also had smoked grass, also about 30 years ago - knew what it felt like to get high, don't regret having smoked grass, but just chose to not smoke it anymore. She patiently explained that you didn't smoke cannabis oil, that you placed two or three drops under your tongue, that this cannabis oil did NOT have TCH - the element in marijuana that gets you high (though you can buy cannabis oil WITH TCH). It simply relieves pain.

I believe you are guilty of “Conduct Unbecoming a Paper.” Unless and until you allow Mr. Geary the space and front page coverage in your paper to rebut your accusations, you may be using your paper to help destroy a man and his livelihood .

Reluctantly, I gave it a try. I am a skeptic no longer.

Within an hour my shoulder pain dissipated and then disappeared.

I would take a couple of drops a day if and when needed. Not addictive at all.

In time, the muscles and ligaments/cartilage finally healed and today I am fine.

Several months later I developed a kidney stone. Removed surgically. Up to the time of surgery, however, I would occasionally rely upon my new found friend, cannabis oil, to alleviate the discomfort/pain of Mr. Stone. In off the record discussions with my physicians they knew of the palliative effects of cannabis oil and while they had no objection to it, they were unable to legally prescribe it at that time. I believe that situation is slowly changing.

Parkinson’s disease, and schizophrenia. The complexity of these interwoven maladies astounded doctors and were not easily detected because of their over-lapping traits. According to Robin Williams’ widow, an autopsy revealed that the comedian suffered from Lewy bodies dementia. His widow, Susan Schneider Williams, publicly revealed that he was also struggling with depression and early stages of Parkinson’s disease. Along with the little-known Lewy bodies dementia which “mimics” or “impersonates” other diseases, and causes dementia in the brain, it was not even discovered – let alone suspected – until it was found during the autopsy examination. All four doctors who had reviewed Robin Williams’ medical record said they were shocked at the intensity of his condition, calling it: “One of the worst pathologies they had ever seen!” Williams was also thought to be plagued by manic-depression or bipolar illness which further complicated the already

“mixed-bag” of maladies within him.

For nearly a year prior to his suicide, Robin Williams was aware of his deteriorating mental faculties and kept saying: “I just want to reboot my brain!” He tried in vain to find out what was going on inside of him, undergoing extensive tests and even scans. He tried various prescribed medications, physical therapy, even self-hypnosis. The sad fact was that, according to his widow: “Robin was losing his mind and he was aware of it. Can you imagine the pain he felt as he experienced himself disintegrating?” After his death, she would write of her ordeal and the painful and desperate search for a cure for her husband’s mysterious illness in an article she titled: “The Terrorists Inside My Husband’s Brain.”

In the months preceding his suicide, Robin Williams was onset by paranoia and confusion and increasing loss of memory. While filming “Night at the Museum 3” during the spring of 2014, he would sometimes have panic attacks on the movie set and had great difficulty remembering even one Man About Town Cont. from Page 4

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 2 people paddling the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program’, with meetings, dinners and free pens for the paddlers. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices, and bonuses. The pension program was trimmed to 'equal the competition' and some of the resultant savings were channeled into morale boosting programs and teamwork posters. The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid off one paddler, halted development of a new canoe, sold all the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses.

A doctor that had been seeing an 80-yearold woman for most of her life finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the doctor was looking through these his eyes grew wide as he realized Grandma had a prescription for birth control pills. "Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are birth control pills?" "Yes, they help me sleep at night."

"Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely nothing in these that could possibly help you sleep!" She reached out and patted the young doctor's knee and said, "Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16year-old Granddaughter drinks. And believe me it definitely helps me sleep at night" You gotta love Grandmas!

dent?” Reagan playfully adlibbed, “How can a president not be an actor?” Reagan’s sharp mind knew the subtle rules and nuances of surviving any debate: “If you’re explaining, you’re losing.”

On more explosive issues he was not a “fence straddler” but took incendiary issues head-on with a wrecking ball coated with wry sarcasm: “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.” Reagan knew that if a remark was funny enough it would be remembered, repeated, and grow a life of its own and, therefore, would have a longevity against any opposing viewpoint. Now standing before an adoring crowd on February 3, 1994, in Washington, D. C., he evoked both laughter and applause. “I must say that returning to Washington today really brought back memories. As our plane headed toward the airport, I looked down on the White House, and it was just like the good old days. Up on Capitol Hill, I saw that big, white dome, bulging with new tax revenues. I instinctively reached for my ‘veto’ pen and thought to myself, ‘Go ahead, make my day.’”

After that rousing reception and his amusing anecdotes all memorized and delivered away from cue cards, the Reagans departed his 83rd Birthday Gala, leaving the audience wanting more. Nancy Reagan vividly remembered what happened as they made their way back to their hotel suite.

Something would happen that would forever change the life of the Reagan family – and America as well.

According to Dr. John Hutton, Reagan’s personal physician, when the Reagans reached their hotel suite in Washington, D. C. after his triumphant birthday reception, he hesitated near his room and said out loud: “Well, I have got to wait a minute. I am not quite sure where I am!” Startled, Nancy Reagan quickly said, “Now, Ronnie, your clothes are down at the end of this room and you go down and you will find out where they are.” Nancy then quickly turned to Dr. Hutton and said,

“John, do you see what I mean?” Nancy had long suspected there was something troubling about her husband’s lapses in memory.

On November 5, 1994 Nancy Reagan’s concerns would prove valid when he was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 84. The prognosis was clearly stated: “There is no cure.” The former U. S. President scribbled on two sheets of paper a letter to the American people and handed it to Chief of Staff, Fred Ryan stating, “Why don’t we get this typed up and put out.” The letter would hit the world like a bomb shell. Addressed to “My Fellow Americans,” it said in part: “I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.” The letter concluded, “In closing let me thank you, the American people for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your President. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.” (Contents of this letter were faxed to the Reagan Library on November 5, 1994.)

Brilliant author, Bob Spitz, in his unexcelled tribute “Reagan: An American Journey,” (Penguin Press, 2018) he chronicles the final days of suffering and torment.

As his memory faded, Reagan’s mind somehow took him back to when he was leader of the Western World. He once got out of bed at 4 a.m. and dressed as if going to work at the Oval Office. Nancy lovingly led him back to his bed. Ever his rock, she serenely spoke to him in quiet tones of their beautiful life together and the unbounded love which tied a bow around it. For Nancy Reagan, her heart would forever be shattered into irreconcilable pieces. The end came on June 5, 2004 when, during his final moments of life, the ex-president looked

BACK TO SESSION 2019

On January 7, 120 California legislators will assemble in the State Capitol to begin the 20192020 session. Almost 3,000 bills will probably be introduced over the next few weeks. Some will be controversial, though I’m hoping that many important issues that face us, regardless of party, including disaster preparedness, water infrastructure, healthcare, transportation, education and many more, will generate bi-partisan solutions.

Proposals for new legislation must be submitted to the Legislative Counsel’s office by January 25 so that bill language can be drafted by February 22, this year’s final introduction deadline. The first stop will be the Rules Committee, which assigns bills to policy committees based on subject matter and committee jurisdiction. Bills are normally assigned to more than one committee, and must pass each committee and be approved by their full house of origin by May 31. If approved, bills are then referred to the alternate house where the process begins

An Audience To Remember

There are times in one’s life when unexpected pleasures come flooding in. I’ve had several of those occasions, one of them occurring back in 1979, while a cast member of the venerable stage play, The Philadelphia Story at the Patio Playhouse in Escondido. I was cast as Uncle Willie, one of the supporting characters. The movie was a favorite of mine. The 1940 film featured Cary Grant, Katharyn Hepburn, James Stewart, and Ruth Hussey.

I don’t recall who, but one of my friend told me that Miss Hussey lived in Carlsbad and had the popular actress’ phone number. Miss Hussey had played the photographer Elizabeth Inbrig character, for which she was nominated for an Oscar, It occurred to me having the one-time popular star would be something of a coup if I could get her to one of the stage performances. I called her and she graciously accepted without hesitation – and, could she bring some of her Hollywood friends? I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough. Ruth Carol Hussey Oct. 30, 1911, in Providence, R.I. In New York City, she worked as a model before landing a number of stage roles with touring companies. MGM signed her to a players’ contract and she made her film debut in 1937. She quickly became a leading lady in MGM's "B" unit, usually playing sophisticated, worldly roles. In 1941, exhibitors voted her the third-most popular new star in Hollywood.

Other films she starred in included working with Robert Taylor in Flight Command (1940), Robert Young in Northwest Passage (1940), Van Heflin in Tennessee Johnson (1942), Ray Milland in The Uninvited (1944), Alan Ladd in The Great Gatsby (1949), and Clifton Webb in “Stars & Stripes Forever (1953). In 1960, she costarred in The Facts of Life with Bob Hope. Miss Hussey was also active in early television drama. She also was active in Catholic charities, was noted for painting in watercolors, and was a lifelong Democrat although she did vote for Republican Thomas Dewey in 1944, and for Hollywood friend and former co-star Ronald Reagan in the 1980 and 1984 presidential elections. On the night she and her entourage

arrived, I introduced the 18-yearold young lady playing the photographer’s role to Miss Hussey after the show. While the youngster had never seen the movie, nor had no idea who the star was, Miss Hussey praised the girl for her Patio performance.

Among the friends Miss Hussey brought was her film producer-husband Bab Longnecker, Dick Simmons (Sgt Preston of the Yukon), and three other familiar charcter actors, whose names I don’t recall. The trio were easily recognizable after having seen them numerous times down through the years in supporting character roles of old films. They all lived in the Rancho Carlsbad community just off El Camino Real. Ruth Hussey died at the age of 95 on Aug. 19, 2005. As for that Patio Playhouse production of The Philadelphia Story, “Uncle Willie” was honored with the “Best Supporting Actor” award at the close of the season. A nice way to remember a wonderful life experience.

GROANER -- A movie producer was planning his next blockbuster - an action docudrama about famous composers, so he set up a meeting with such noted icons as Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Arnold Schwarzenegger, offering each a chance to select which famous musicians they'd like to portray. "I've always admired Mozart," Stallone said. "I'd love to play him." "Chopin has always been my favorite," said Van Damme. "That's the part for me."

The producer turned to Schwarzenegger. "And you, Arnold? Who do you want to be?" There was a long silence, then Arnold replied, "I'll be Bach."

GAS-X? ---- One reader made this suggestion for a bit of pump relief: cut the state gasoline taxes. "The state Legislature could reduce state taxes on gasoline," he suggested. "It won't deal with the supply or resource problem, but it would help with our pocket-book shock." He added, "As the price of gas goes up, the sales-tax collection increases, so, if the price drops through a tax cut, wouldn't the rush for full tank resulting in additional sales make up the difference?" around him for his wife, Nancy. As Bob Spitz recalls: “With his last breath, he angled his head to one side, opened his eyes wide, wider, until they found Nancy’s face. He looked right at her, then closed his eyes and was gone.”

If we are to honor President Ronald Reagan’s request, as well as his surviving family, then we are bound to share this story of tragedy and learn from it. Alzheimer’s is a menace which needs to be reckoned with and declared war against. Long before his own diagnosis, Reagan always knew the dangers of Alzheimer’s disease and the need for public awareness. In 1983, only 2 years after assuming his first term as U. S. President he would officially dedicate the month of November as “National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.” Little did he know at the time that 11 years later in 1994, after declaring war on this disease he would be diagnosed Alzheimer’s & Dementia Cont. on Page 9

as having that very disease, himself. Incredibly, his diagnosis came in November, the very month he declared as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Let us honor his legacy and request to continue the fight against Alzheimer’s. Take an Alzheimer’s quiz and learn more about it and how you can stay involved. ALZHEIMER’S IS THE ONLY FORM OF DEMENTIA. A. True B. False

Correct answer is “B” false. Although Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, there are several other types including Vascular dementia, Lewy bodies dementia, Parkinson’s disease (which can cause mental impairment), Frontotemporal dementia, Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, to cite just a few examples. A person can have more than one type of dementia at the same time. ARE THERE TESTS FOR ALZHEIMER’S? A. Yes. Chuckles Cont. from Page 8

2. The Blue Book value of your truck goes up and down depending on how much gas is in it.

3. You've been married three times and still have the same in-laws

B. No.

As in the case with President Ronald Reagan and others, tests quickly determined that he (Reagan) was just entering the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. However, tests are not always that conclusive and can be difficult, as in the case of Robin Williams, who was found to have dementia only after an autopsy was conducted. But, generally speaking, the correct answer is “A” yes. According to the Alzheimer’s Association: “Doctors can nearly always determine whether you have dementia, and they can often identify whether your dementia is due to Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease can be diagnosed with complete accuracy only after death, when microscopic examination of the brain reveals the characteristic.” (Alzheimer’s official website, https://www.alz.org/alzheimer s-dementia/diagnosis/medical tests.)

Always check with your family physician and never take chances if you’re in doubt. HOW OFTEN DOES ALZHEIMER’S STRIKE IN AMERICA? A. One diagnosis every day.

4. You think a woman who is out of your league bowls on a different night. 5. You wonder how service stations keep their rest-rooms so clean.

6. Someone in your family died right after saying, 'Hey, guys, watch this.' 7. You think Dom Perignon is a Mafia leader. 8. Your wife's hairdo was once ruined by a ceiling fan.

10. You think the last words of the Star-Spangled Banner are 'Gentlemen, start your engines.'

13. You have to go outside to get something from the fridge. 14. One of your kids was born on a pool table.

15. You need one more hole punched in your card to get a freebie at the House of Tattoos. 16. You can't get married to your sweetheart because there's a law

B. One diagnosis every hour. C. One diagnosis every 65 seconds. Correct answer is “C” above. Every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s. According to the official Alzheimer’s Association in America: “As the number of older Americans grows rapidly, so too will the number of new and existing cases of Alzheimer’s. Today, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s every 65 seconds.” ONLY SENIOR CITIZENS GET DEMENTIA. A. True. B. False.

Surprisingly, the correct answer is “B” false. Dementia is more common in people over 65, but it can also affect younger people. Early onset of dementia can begin when people are in their 30s, 40s, or 50s. One recent study found evidence of dementia in people as young as 20 years old. However, it mostly affects older people. 1 in 3 seniors die with Alzheimer’s or other against it.

dementia. It kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer – combined!

ALZHEIMER’S STRIKES MORE WOMEN THAN MEN. A. True. B. False.

Correct answer is “A” true. It’s no secret that women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers at first attributed this to the fact that women (on average) live longer than men, but scientists are now finding out that there may be other contributing factors to the disease. 60% of all Alzheimer’s disease victims are women. Research has found that women in their 60s are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s than to develop breast cancer. Maria Carrillo, chief science officer for the Alzheimer’s Association states: “There are enough biological questions pointing to increased risk in women that we need to delve into that and find out why.” Alzheimer’s & Dementia Cont. on Page 10

WHICH U. S. ETHNIC/RACIAL GROUP IS HIGHEST RISK FOR ALZHEIMER’S? A. White B. Hispanic C. Black Correct answer is “C.” Older African-Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer’s or other dementia than older whites. Hispanics are about 1 ½ times more likely to have Alzheimer’s or other dementia than older whites. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP PREVENT ALZHEIMER’S?

Best answer is to always check with your family physician. Never try to ‘play doctor’ yourself by possibly making dangerous and wrongful assumptions. Never, ever take that gamble. Every person is different, so first ask your doctor questions regarding possible prevention measures such as improving your diet, exercise (your doctor must first approve the level of exercise for your condition), faithfully taking vitamins or medications as prescribed by your personal physician. Never experiment with over-thecounter drugs without first consulting your doctor. Your spe-

Hobbies are fun, especially with a group of friends to interact with. Performing simple crossword puzzles help the perception of spatial relationship and logical conclusions. Stay socially interactive with friends with conversations and sharing experiences, etc. Surprisingly, social interaction is healthy for mental and psychological stimulation. Isolation is not a condition conducive for mental health. Homeless people, for example, often incur early symptoms of dementia. Also, log onto the various official websites of the National Alzheimer’s Association to learn more and keep up with new scientific findings. For example, vitamin B12 deficiency may contribute to memory loss. Also, fish with omega-3 fatty acids (for example tuna, halibut, and salmon) may decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s. “While there is no diet or food (proven) to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, there is (strong evidence) that diet may decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s” according to Sue Stillman Linja and Seanne Safaii-Waite, and the Alzheimer’s Association. CAN ALZHEIMER’S SYMPTOMS VARY AND MISLEAD US? Yes. According to the Jersey Alzheimer’s Association, up to 45 percent of people with dementia have mixed dementia but don’t know it. Mixed dementia can cause different symptoms in different people. Some people experience memory loss and disorientation first, while others experience behavior and mood changes first. So be aware and consult your family doctor if necessary. WHAT ARE SOME DEMENTIA SYMPTOMS TO LOOK FOR? The National Alzheimer’s Association lists “10 Early Signs & Symptoms of Alzheimer’s.” (1) Memory loss that disrupts daily life. (2) Difficulty in planning or solving routine things such as keeping track of monthly bills. (3) Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure. Alzheimer’s victims sometimes have trouble driving to a familiar location, remem-

bering rules to a favorite game, or confused about the settings on a microwave oven. (4) Confusion with time or place. Like Ronald Reagan, people may begin to have trouble remembering where they are or how they got there. They also may lose track of time, dates or even what year it is. (5) Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. Vision problems, difficulty reading, judging distances, and not able to determine color or contrast can be an early sign. (6) New problems with words in speaking or writing. People with Alzheimer’s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in mid-sentence, not knowing how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may begin to use common words in clumsy ways, such as calling a “wrist watch” a “hand-clock.” (7) Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. A person with Alzheimer’s may put things in unusual places such as the car keys in the refrigerator. Or unable to retrace their steps in trying to find a lost item. They may

At age 15 he was bitter, discouraged, and mad at everyone. One night, God whispered to him, and that changed everything. Our world needs hope, along with some fresh perspective on how blessed we are. That’s

Clearing work to being in preparation for bridge constructio n near San Marcos Creek

After two decades of working to secure federal grants, permits and finalizing engineering designs on two new bridges near the San Marcos Creek, I am happy to report that the city will be inching one-step closer to construction. The City of San Marcos will be clearing and grubbing areas south of San Marcos Boulevard this month in preparation for upcoming construction of two new bridges spanning Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz. The vegetation removal will take place from now through Thursday, Feb. 28 from 7 am to 4 pm on weekdays near Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz. During this work, the city is making every effort to minimize impacts to residents and to the environment by using hand tools and equipment that do not disturb

the ground. While the city will not be closing streets, sidewalks or driveways, motorists are urged to use caution when driving through the work zone and to be aware of trucks entering and exiting. Residents and businesses in the area may experience noise from mowers and chainsaws during work hours.

Expected to take three years to complete, the bridges will resolve the area’s longstanding flooding issues and improve traffic circulation. To top it off, the project will bring a promenade trail connecting the two bridges, as well as bike, pedestrian and signal improvements on Discovery Avenue, Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

This is the first full week after the holidays and it’s been busy. I’ve had a number of meetings with various groups and all have some great ideas and passion for how we move forward as a community. While I don’t think it will be easy or the solutions satisfy everyone, the good news is we have people who care. And if that is our base, reasonable people will get things done. I’m very hopeful for this new year!

They may begin losing interest in their favorite hobbies, or withdrawing from social groups and activities. (10) Changes in mood and personality. The mood and personality of people with Alzheimer’s can change. They may become suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. PCs are defined as desktop and notebook computers. Chromebooks, tablets and of course smart phones are not part of the mix. PCs have significant stand alone capabilities with robust processors and a lot of storage and graphics processing power. Chromebooks, tablets and smart phones are essentially I/O (input/output) devices that use the Internet’s processing resources to visually or audibly display information. Although it’s true that many PC users almost exclusively use their PC as an Internet I/O device, a PC still has significant “stand alone” computing power. That is why they are called computers. There are two billion PCs being used in the World today. 90% of

Genealogy Class on January 19th – The San Marcos Historical Society Is presenting a new Genealogy class on Saturday,

Apple and Linux have maintained their market share for decades but neither are players among business or serious PC users so, for analytical purpose, we can ignore their aggregate single digit presence and consider only the market share of the various Microsoft Windows OS as being 100% of the market. By the beginning of 2019 Windows10 has struggled to a 45% market share as compared to 43% for Windows7. Windows XP, Vista and 8/8.1 split the remaining 12%. When Windows10 was introduced in July of 2015, Microsoft predicted it would have 1 billion users by year end 2017. By year end 2018 Win10 still had only 700 million users. The failure of Windows10 to replace Windows 7 is a major problem for Microsoft. Unable to purchase “retail” Windows7 PCs since the release of Windows 8 in 2012, home and small business users have avoided Win 10 either by holding on to their old PCs or by buying upgraded Win7 “refurbs”. Win 7 “refurbs” became available because corporations, schools and governments who continue to demand Windows7 PCs and budget to replace these Win7 PCs on three to five year cycles.

Microsoft had planned to end support for Windows7 early next year but it’s beginning to look like a huge problem for Microsoft. Either they will be forced to extend the life of Win 7 as

North Coast Symphony “Carnival of the Animals” - The North Coast Symphony Orchestra chamber music players will present Carnival of the Animals and Septet for piano, trumpet and strings, both by Camille Saint-Saëns, on January 19, at 2:00pm, at the Carlsbad Dove Library Schulman Auditorium, 1775 Dove Lane, Carlsbad. Guest pianist Byron Chow will be featured on both pieces. Especially enjoyed by children, the whimsical Carnival of the Animals includes a narrator, and each movement represents a different animal, including a lion, donkey, and elephant, as well as giraffes, an aquarium, and an aviary. Admission is free, donations are encouraged. For more information, visit www.northcoastsymphony.com. This performance is funded by a grant from the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation.

Itzhak Perlman Returns to CCAE in Escondido – Legendary violist, Itzhak Perlman is coming back for a return performance to the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, on Saturday, January 19th, starting at 7:30pm in the Concert Hall, 24 years later at the Center. “With Perlman, Tchaikovsky and Mozart on the bill, that’s about as sure a crowd-pleasing combination as you can get — and the ovations were thunderous. The violinistturned-conductor does have a grand, coherent conception of what he wants, and the orchestra played luxuriously well for him.”- Los Angeles Times. “One of the world’s most acclaimed and talented classical musicians …” -Yahoo News. Undeniably the reigning virtuoso of the violin, Itzhak Perlman enjoys superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician. Beloved for his charm and humani-

they did for XP or find a way to “buy out” Windows 7 users. We have a feeling it’s going to be expensive for Microsoft and perhaps a windfall for the Windows 7 holdouts.

The OS market share on communications devices is almost as lopsided as it is in PCs and here again; Apple is the mouse in the room. Alphabet’s (Google) Android OS is on 86% of the Worlds smart phones followed by Apple’s iOS at 13%. Only In America where Apple’s “Fanbois cult” is strongest does Apple’s smart phone market share exceed 30%.

Our prediction for 2019 in PCs is that new PC sales and prices will continue to fall. “Refurbs” sales will continue to grow and prices are already on the rise as large users begin to extend their replacement cycles and “refurbs” supplies tighten. Microsoft will be forced

ty as well as his talent, he is treasured by audiences throughout the world who respond not only to his remarkable artistry, but also to his irrepressible joy for making music. to create incentives to lure users to Win 10 from Win 7. Declining PC sales will affect all the major non-manufacturing PC marketers like Dell, HP and Apple as well as the Asian companies who manufacture their products. Long term we see home PCs being replaced by smart phone docking stations where smart phones will connect to large touch screens with keyboard and mouse option and use the “cloud” for processing and storage. In smart phones Apple will continue its worldwide decline. Android phones and iPhones essentially do the same thing. Even in America Apple will have difficulty maintaining premium pricing for its me-too products. Apple needs a new gig. As for The Computer Factory in 2019? Among items on display is the personal riding saddle of Reeves which was donated to the museum along with other items in 2008. At the time, thenGovernor Arnold Schwarzenegger sent a message to the museum reading, in part, "Steve was a great inspiration to me." During his lifetime, his bodybuilding titles included Mr. America, Mr. World and Mr. Universe.

PETITION FOR APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIAN OF THE PERSON Case # 37-1018-00051141-PRGP-CTL Superior Court of Caalifornia, County of San Diego 1100 Union Street San Diego, CA. 92101 Central Courthouse Family Law

Guardianship of the person of Kaden Dean, Colton Jesina and Dalilah Jesina

Petitioner: Eva Beatty 453 Vale View Dr., Vista, CA. 92081 Phone 760.274.7647

Petitioner requests the court to appoint her as guardian for the children named above. Attorney: Cathryn E. Young, Esq. Griffith, Young & Lass, APC 1525 Faraday Avenue, Suite 140 Carlsbad, CA. 92008 858.345.1720 Fax> 858.345.1725 Email: catif@gylfamilylaw.com

The proposed guardian is NOT related to the child or children named. I am the proposed guardian. I will promplty furnish any information requested by an agency investtigating an adoption or a local agency designated by the county to provide public social services. The full legal name and date of birth of each child who needs a guardian is: Kaden Michael Dean, dob 3-10-06 Colton Honza Jesina, dob 11-11/07 Dalilah Hana-Sue Jesina, dob 910-09

The guardianship is necessary or convenient for the reasons given below: I am friends with the children’s mother, Melissa Dean Baumann, who has been incarcerated since July, 2014, sentenced 15 years to life. The whereabouts of their father, Mark Jesina, is unknown. He has made no attempt to contact me or the children since 7/2014. The children have been in my sole custody and care since 7/2014. I have raised them with the help of my husband. Melissa consents to the Legal Guardianship Appointment and has signed over Power of Attorney to me. Attached POA signed 8/1/14 & 3/22/17. I do not believe Father, if located, would contest the guardianship. Pursing legal guardianship will allow me to obtain benefits through the state of California which will be extremely helpful and beneficial for the children. We ask the court to appoint Eva Beatty as guardian of the person of the children named above and issue Letters of Guardianship.

Excuse me from having to give notice of the hearing on the petition to one or more relatives or other persons listed in item 2 of the attached Guardianship Petition Child Information Attachment (form GC-210(CA)) for the reasons given below:

I do not know the known location or wherabouts of Mark Jesina, the children’s father. He has had no contact or made any attempts to contact me or childen since July 2014. Last I heard he was homeless, without a job and has been in and out of jail on drug related offenses.  I will gladly serve by publication if required to so so by the court. All attachments are made part of this form as though incuded here. There are ___ pages attached to this form. Date: 10/9/18 /s/ Catherine E. Young, Esq.

I delcare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the State of California that the information stated above is true and correct. Date: 10/8/18 /s/ Eva Beatty DOP: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24 & 1/31/2019
