ENGAGE San Marcos—stay connected in 2016

On behalf of the City Council and myself, I wish you and your family a happy, healthy and successful 2016.

ABC News Anchor Hugh Downs used to close his 20/20 news program by saying, “We’re in touch, so you be in touch.” That phrase reminds me of my commitment to keep our residents informed. We’re in touch with the latest City happenings, so we can keep you in the news loop. To do this, the City will kick off 2016 with a new communications campaign entitled “ENGAGE San Marcos” designed to increase communication and improve interaction with residents. It centers around two new digital advances – a newly designed website and the addition of an Instagram account to the City’s social

media lineup. Both are slated to launch in February 2016.

The new website, www.san-marcos.net, was crafted after a tremendous amount of research and surveys to help learn which features were most frequently accessed and what the site was lacking. The new site puts the most popular items right up front, making it easier than ever to navigate the site. One of the best ways to get the latest city news is to go to the city website and sign up for “E-Alerts.” When signing up, you can choose to get emergency-related notifications, traffic alerts, news briefs and other City information emailed directly to you in real time. Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter

Vista Welcomes New Fire Chief

The City of Vista welcomes Jeff Hahn as the Fire Department’s newest Chief. Chief Hahn took over the reins after Chief Minnick retired with 34 years of service. Jeff Hahn has served as one of two Deputy Chiefs since 2012 and has 30 years of experience in our City’s Fire Department.

We are looking forward to Chief Hahn continuing the Fire Department’s efforts in building a strong and safe community for our Vista residents. The Vista Fire Department also covers the rural fire district and last year the department responded to over

12,000 calls for service. One noteworthy mention is that in 2010, the Vista Fire Department received its first accreditation with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). This was for meeting criteria established through the CFAI voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program. This prestigious accreditation is recognized as a worldwide measure of excellence in the fire service. Our Vista Fire Department is one of only 148 agencies worldwide to have received this designation and is the only accredited city fire department in San Diego County and is one of only 17 across the state.

Helping Foster Kids – Are you aware that 36% of former foster youth become homeless within 18 months of emancipation? “The biggest challenges for former foster youth? Depression and suicide,” said Luis, a young man, a LifeSpring client from Lifeline. Many people had the opportunity to hear Luis speak this past October at Lifeline’s annual meeting. You know that he is talented, inspiring and driven. If you were honored to hear Luis tell his story you know that there are many families working with Lifeline right now, telling their own stories.

Lifeline is asking the community to support Luis and the thousands of people working with lifeline – overcoming the odds and becoming successful. Your donation to North County Lifeline gives North County San Diego’s youth and families the tools they need to solve their problems and become self-reliant. In Luis’ case he needed a home and consistent, caring support, or, as he recently put it, “familiar faces that stick around.” Will you make a taxdeductible donation today? Your donation today supports kids and families tomorrow. . . and all year long, like Luis and the thousands of clients who turn to Lifeline for help every year.
