The World Championships 2022 Recap

In 2020, Australia won gold in the IIHF Division II-B Women’s World Championships held in Akureyri, Iceland However, due to COVID-19, all subsequent tournaments were cancelled, and Australia was denied promotion.

In 2022, Australia travelled to Zagreb, Croatia, intending to win gold once again and finally earn a promotion to Division II-A. Australia started its campaign positively with a 7-0 victory over Türkiye.

Next up, Australia defeated tournament hosts Croatia 13-0, dominating the shot count 61-5. The team followed that dominance with a 17-0 victory over South Africa and outshot the South Africans 77-6.

The fourth and final game saw the two undefeated teams in the tournament, Iceland and Australia, facing each other in a gold-medal match

Iceland scored first in the final minutes of the second period, but Australia equalised midway through the third. After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a penalty shootout, which Iceland won by the narrowest of margins.

The World Championships The 2023 Tournament

New Zealand returns to international play this year and rejoins the Division II-B competition Belgium also join the group after earning gold and promotion last year from Division III.

Unfortunately, Türkiye will not participate in this year’s tournament due to the devastating earthquakes.

Division II-B will be a round-robin tournament, as has been the case in recent years, with the top team after the round-robin matches earning gold and promotion, and the bottom team will be relegated to Division III.

Australia will first play tournament hosts South Africa, followed by Belgium, Croatia, and then New Zealand in its final game.

Whereas domestic and international border restrictions were in place last year, necessitating the cancellation of the AWIHL season, the AWIHL has resumed this year, and players enter the tournament in mid-season form

With all games of the tournament being streamed live and free via YouTube, it’s a great opportunity to show your support for our Senior Women’s Team in its quest for gold and promotion.
