Founded in 1889, Georgia College has grown from an initial enrollment of 88 women from within the state to an annual count of more than 6,250 male and female students from all over the world. Georgia College, originally founded as the sister institution to Georgia Tech, is now the designated public liberal arts university for the state of Georgia. Georgia College began as Georgia Normal and Industrial College, offering young women educational opportunities in teaching, office skills and economics. Georgia College has been co-educational since 1967. Georgia College’s College of Arts and Sciences and Schools of Business, Education, and Health Sciences are fully accredited. The University also distinguishes itself by taking advantage of expanding technology resources such as electronic classrooms, an interlibrary network system, and distance learning centers. Georgia College’s range of degree programs is the broadest in the midstate, with more than 80 degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels offered by a highly qualified faculty in a supportive environment. As Georgia’s public liberal arts university, Georgia College is committed to the foundations of the liberal arts education: preparation, adaptation, and an approach to life with a broader perspective. Among its academic achievements, Georgia College was the first senior college in the system to award master’s degrees in business administration and public administration and was also the first to implement admission requirements for completion of the high school College

Preparatory Curriculum. In conjunction with the U.S. Air Force at Robins Air Logistics Center, Georgia College operates the nation’s only Logistics Education Center, awarding the only bachelor’s and master’s degrees in logistics systems in the country. G e o r g i a College is located in Milledgeville, the antebellum capital of Georgia. The white columns and spacious lawns of the main campus cover several blocks of downtown Milledgeville. The block occupied by the oldest part of the college was Milledgeville’s Penitentiary Square through most of the 19th Century. The peach-colored stucco mansion was home to Georgia’s governors from 1838 to 1868. At the Milledgeville campus, the new complements the old. In the last two decades, the college has restored or renovated many historic structures and adapted them for office and classroom use. Since 2002, new state-of-the-art residence halls have been built and the library has undergone a major expansion. A diverse student body, spirited faculty, and dedicated administration study and work in many of the city’s historic houses and buildings.

A C A DE M I C S Continually striving for academic excellence, Georgia College has long prided itself as one of the finest institutions of learning in the southeast. In its early years the university was renowned for training teachers; more recently it has grown into the liberal arts university of the University System of Georgia. The institution offers more than 100 degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. More than 60 percent of Georgia College & State University’s faculty holds the doctoral degree, and the majority are actively involved in research in their fields. The Georgia College Athletic Department is committed to student-athlete excellence both on and off the playing field. The coaching staffs at Georgia College have committed themselves to recruiting student-athletes who are academically capable and motivated to obtain a college degrees. All potential student athletes must be granted admission into the university and cleared through the NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse. The moment a student-athlete decides Georgia College is the right place to be, the athletic department provides personal support, academic counseling and professional development to ensure that they will get the most of their years wearing the Green and Blue. The Georgia College Athletic Department has set up an academic support program which provides tutoring services to student-athletes, and is designed to help and encourage athletes to excel in the classroom. The women’s basketball program at Georgia College has taken additional steps to ensure that its student-athletes earn a degree. The Mentor Program teams a returning Georgia College player with a newcomer in order to assist with classwork and personal development. Newcomers also attend weekly organizational sessions that emphasize time management. Continuing its tradition of leadership in education, Georgia College is the first of the state’s universities to phase in requirements for completion of all college preparatory curriculum requirements before enrollment. Undergraduate course offerings include liberal arts and professional degree programs that provide students with breadth and depth of preparation for their intended careers. All degrees build on a broadly based general education program that includes the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and the social sciences. Undergraduate programs offer opportunities for specialization in the arts and sciences and in preprofessional and professional areas including business, education, and nursing. Georgia College’s range of degree programs is the broadest in the midstate, with 65 undergraduate, 35 graduate and 20 preprofessional programs. The university also provides graduate studies in several specialties of the arts and sciences and in business, education and health sciences. Admission is based on criteria specific to each program. These programs are designed to be responsive to the needs of contemporary students. Georgia College boasts of one of the top libraries in Middle Georgia. The Russell Library underwent a $19.5 million expansion and renovation to form the Georgia College Library and Information Technology Center and added 93,000 square feet to

the existing structure. It was re-opened in 2004 and houses more than 180,000 hardbound volumes and subscribes to more than 14,000 print and electronic periodicals.

Dr. Dorothy Leland

Georgia College President

Dr. Dorothy Leland is the 10th president of Georgia College and the second female president of the university in its 116-year history. She began her tenure at Georgia College on January 1, 2004. Leland came to Georgia College, Georgia’s public liberal arts university, with nearly 20 years of experience in a variety of college and university leadership positions, most recently as vice president at the Boca Raton campus of Florida Atlantic University and professor of philosophy. She also held leadership positions at Purdue University, her alma mater. At Georgia College, she oversees a residential liberal arts campus and two commuter centers with a combined enrollment of more than 5,600 students and almost 800 faculty and staff. Leland combines visionary leadership with a pragmatic focus on finding ways to get things accomplished. At the heart of her vision is for Georgia College to become one of the nation’s very best public liberal arts universities. This demands a focus on academic excellence and innovation – what Leland calls “pillars of distinction.” Additionally, Leland has begun initiatives to strengthen the university’s endowment. She is also placing an added emphasis on retaining students from year to year, and is working to increase the geographic, economic and ethnic diversity of incoming classes. As one of the University System of Georgia’s state universities, Georgia College also provides graduate programs to meet area workforce needs. Leland’s goal is to continue developing the Milledgeville campus as a residential, undergraduate liberal arts college while refo-

cusing graduate and professional education in Macon and Warner Robins. Leland is active in the local community, encouraging economic development partnerships between the city, county and university that will strengthen downtown Milledgeville and create a diversity of businesses there. She is a member of Forward Baldwin and serves on the board of directors for Oconee River Greenway Foundation and the Flannery O’Connor-Andalusia Foundation. Building alumni relations is also a key goal for Leland. She is working with the Alumni Association to strengthen ties and cultivate loyalty to the university, which has been transformed many times, but is returning to its roots as a statewide institution with a strong academic mission. Since coming to Georgia College, Leland has been named to several state boards, including the Georgia Chamber of Commerce board of directors, the Georgia Council on Economics Education board of trustees, the Georgia Department of Corrections Corporate Advisory Board, and the PAGE Foundation board of trustees. Leland also is a member of a number of professional organizations, including American Association of Higher Education, Society for College and University Planning, American Association of University Women and American Philosophical Association. She has written more than 40 publications and made presentations in the field of contemporary continental philosophy, focused on issues related to gender and personal, social and cultural identity. Leland holds a bachelor of arts degree in English, a master of arts degree in American studies, and a doctoral degree in philosophy, all earned at Purdue University.

SPORTS MEDICINE Comprehensive medical care is coordinated for all Bobcat student-athletes under the direction of a team physician and a staff of nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers. Undergraduate student interns from the athletic training education program assist the professional staff in their duties while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the allied healthcare field. With a physician referral, the staff is also available to treat Georgia College faculty, staff, and students for their outpatient rehabilitation.

The first goal of the program is to help prevent athletic injuries from occurring. Recognizing that some injuries and illnesses are inevitable, the professional staff works under the supervision of the team physician to diagnose those conditions, to provide initial treatment and follow-up care including any rehabilitation, and to counsel students on available treatment options. By providing quality care as early as possible, studentathletes are able return to the field of play as soon as possible while decreasing their risk of reinjury.

Services in the athletic training room include state of the art modalities such as ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, and laser as well as other treatment methods to alleviate pain and swelling, increase strength and flexibility, and decrease risk of reinjury in the athletes treated there. Treatment and rehabilitation take place in the 1000 square foot athletic training room at the Centennial Center, as well as a smaller satellite facility at West Campus. A member of the athletic training staff is available at every practice and competition for the Bobcat teams throughout their respective seasons.

CONDITIONING The Bobcats have the opportunity to work with a worldclass strength and conditioning instructor in Dr. Mike Martino. With support from undergraduate members of the exercise science program, Martino uses his lengthy experience in physiological testing and training methods for Georgia College student-athletes to maximize theirbodies’ potential.

ATHLETI C DEPARTMENT Built in 2003, Bobcat Field at West Campus provides an excellent venue for some of the best collegiate soccer available in the state of Georgia. Bordered by native trees on three sides to provide a picturesque backdrop, this soccer-specific facility features new light fixtures to host evening competition, a prominent scoreboard to keep fans in the know and well-manicured hybrid bermuda grass turf. In fall 2009, the Bobcats added impressive covered grandstand seating to the facility, so Bobcat fans can enjoy the games despite the weather. Officially part of the Peeler Complex - including the baseball and softball fields nearby - the field was opened in the fall of 2004, the first varsity season for Bobcat soccer. Prior to the 2009 season, Georgia College began construction on seatback stands to the vicwing hillside, improving the viewer’s experience while adding a more complete feel to the facility as a whole. The Bobcats have had success on the home pitch, 30-13-9 in their five seasons, including three Peach Belt Tournament Quarterfinal victories. The ‘Cats were 4-3-4 at home in 2009. Georgia College has many fine athletic facilities in which to compete, highlighted by the $9 million multipurpose Centennial Center. The Centennial Center, which was completed in the fall of 1989, serves as the home for the Georgia College men and women’s basketball teams as well as the offices of the Bobcat athletic department. Located within the historical district of Milledgeville, the 95,000 square-foot building also houses the Department of Kinesiology, and the Center for Health and Lifestyles. The completion of the facility guaranteed that the Bobcats would be competing in one of the finest on-campus arenas in the

state of Georgia and the southeast. The Center has a seating capacity of 4,071 fixed seats and can accommodate up to 800 additional persons with the arranging of chairs on the floor. It features foldout end zone and upper bleachers and three full size basketball courts. Its primary use is for Bobcat basketball, but it also is excellent for large events such as concerts, conference general sessions or exhibits. In addition, the Centennial Center serves as the home of the nationally ranked Georgia College men and women’s tennis teams. Seven lighted laykold surface courts are located just outside of the Centennial Center. The Centennial Center also has a three-lane 1/8-mile walking/running indoor track, an outdoor swimming pool, a free-weight room, four racquetball courts and an athletic training room. The Bobcat baseball, softball and soccer teams compete at the Peeler Athletic Complex. Located minutes from the main campus, the Peeler complex underwent a major facelift in 1992 with the addition of box seats and the renovation of the backstop for the baseball field. The softball field was built in 1990 complete with a scoreboard and bleachers. In 1996 lights were added to both parks, and the complex was dedicated to Mike Peeler, the former athletics director at Georgia College. The baseball field was renamed in honor of John Kurtz, the former coach who put Georgia College baseball on the map. New dugouts were constructed in 2005 along with a new softball pressbox. Softball grandstands were added in 2009, as well as the leveling of the baseball infield. The Georgia College golf team competes multiple beautiful courses the area, including Harbor Club, the Golf Club at Cuscowilla and Little Fishing Creek Golf Course. These courses provide Bobcat golfers with outstanding home venues.

LOCKER ROOM RENOVAT IONS

In an effort to make Georgia College more of a home for Bobcat soccer players, the lockerroom at West Campus got a muchneeded facelift in the summer of 2008. The facility has a much softer look, and is more inviting with the addition of couches and other more home-style furniture. Bobcat futbollers can also enjoy their own sit-in style locker, complete with attractive name-plate.

Another starter back to the defense is sophomore Becky Knoll after seeing 15 starts in 2009. “Becky is a dynamic center back. She’s my General out there, with great communication and organization to our defense.”

“This is one of the deeper teams I’ve ever coached,” admits Clark. “And that has me excited about our options against different lineups. Our fitness as always is key. Once we’ve got that down, we’ll know where we stand.” Stifling defense has been the hallmark of the Bobcat soccer team for the last few seasons, and this year’s squad preview starts with defense as well.

Mary Rob Plunkett

GOALKEEPERS The first All-American in program history, Mary Rob Plunkett returns for her senior season. She allowed just a 0.59 GAA a year ago, adding in a .896 save percentage. Plunkett has twice been named all-conference, and is a “talented keeper with impressive size” according to Clark. Freshman Taylor Mulryan redshirted an injury-riddled 2009, but did see limited action. “Taylor is hungry and extremely coachable. Her athleticism will allow her to challenge Plunkett, advancing the success of our goalkeepers.” DEFENDERS

Another starter back is sophomore Jamie Colcord who spent time as both a defensive-mid and at back. She is “strong and physical, getting into the attack very well”. Colcord netted the game-winner in the 2-1 overtime match with Barry University.

Sophomore Haley O’Hayer is a topnotch utility player for coach Clark, as she can excel at multiple positions both in back and on the front line. O’Hayer utilizes her hard work, fitness and speed to her advantage. Senior Kayla Emerson is in for another utility role, and could see time on all three lines. She has good speed and is well skilled. Sophomore Amanda Veillon will be a contributor at outside back or a defensive center mid, and brings a great grade school pedigree from Parkview High.

Slotted for time at center back, outside back or defensive mid, freshman Anna Barrow is a composed player that “needs growth tactically”. Classmate Sarah Yoder “needs experience playing at the faster pace, but is a solid defender with good 1v1 skills. MIDFIELDERS

Two All-PBC backs return to anchor the defensive line. Senior Jessica Binkowski and junior Tawny Moffat both know what it takes to be successful in Division II soccer. A two-time all-conference choice, Binkowski provides “great senior leadership” with “exceptional speed that allows her to help the attack.”

Two-time all-conference pick Ally Treat is quite possibly the top midfielder in the PBC, a “steadfast and composed” competitor who is “dominant in the air”. She’s not afraid to pull the trigger to help the offense, as the midfielder tallied a goal and four assists a year ago.

Moffat is a “surprising player” according to Clark. She’s a bat-

2010 SEASO N PREVI EW Junior Karen Bonilla is one of the top players on the team, according to Clark. Savvy and creative with the ball, Bonilla helps out on both sides with her vision and ability to “hit the switch”. Freshman Taylor Yee is an outstanding freshman making a mark on her coach in the early preseason with her skill. Yee is a “fighter, with excellent vision and passing precision”. Rookie Brittaney Borror can “hammer the ball, and also is technically sound” and will make an impact this season if she can work better off the ball and on defense.

impact players, not role players. Previously this team was interested in what was safe. We need to take risks and go to the goal. We have new players that are going to make an immediate impact, as well as returners that have already stepped up their game.”

Now in her second season as a Bobcat, Olivia Holden is a well-skilled offensive midfielder with good 1v1 ability and fluidity on the ball. Junior Leah Frazer is a strong 1v1 defender, and is “a sound and composed player”. Senior Kelli McLane continues to battle back from injuries that kept her out of all but five games in 2009, and Clark is hoping to use her “vision and skill as well as her creativity” in the attack. FORWARDS Junior Megan McAlpin returns after leading the 2009 squad with five goals and six assists. McAlpin was the offensive catalyst for the Bobcats and she “has a never quit attitude, continually working hard for her teammates”. Sophomore Anna Wierzbicki had a pair of goals and two assists in her freshman season, and is a talented “ball control player with solid 1v1 vision and good work at the point of attack”. The sophomore will work on getting on frame at the final attack.

Megan McAlpin

Senior Jessica Newland will look to contribute with her experience and leadership qualities. The senior has four goals and three assists in her career. Freshman Alex Knight is quite possibly the most talented 1v1 offensive player on the team, “very creative and flashy”. Another rookie, Allie Schechner will make a late-game impact with her strength and power. Freshman Stephanie Andino has been “one of the best surprises” of the preseason. With “fantastic touch and composed attitude in the final third”, Andino will battle for a starting spot. Rookie Katie Taylor is a “bright player with good 1v1 skills and a high workrate”. The Bobcats struggled to score at times in the 2009 season, leading to 14 total overtime periods and a 1.02 goals scored average. Clark plans to address the scoring punch in 2010. “The build-up is there, we need to work on playing quicker and not holding the ball as much,” she said. “We need

Hope Clark Head Coach Hope Clark was named the third women’s soccer coach in school history in July 2010. Clark comes to Milledgeville after three seasons as the head coach of the women’s soccer program at Auburn University Montgomery. Clark compiled a 35-22-4 mark in her three years at AUM, including advancing to the second round of the 2009 NAIA National Championship Tournament. In her three seasons, the Lady Senators had seven All-Americans, six all-region players and 13 total all-conference honorees. In 2009, AUM was an impressive 15-5-2, falling by penalty-kick shootout in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship to the eventual 2009 National Champions. The Lady Senators opened the NAIA National Tournament with a 5-3 drubbing of Embry-Riddle before falling in the second round 3-2 to No. 3 California Baptist. The 2007 Lady Senators, Clark’s first squad as a collegiate head coach, finished with a strong 14-5-1 record, advanced to the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament semifinals and earned a berth in the NAIA regional tournament. Clark’s 2008 team struggled through a tough regular-season schedule combined with injuries to finish just 6-12-1, but did advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament and produced the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Offensive Player of the Year, two firstteam All-SSAC players and an All-American. Clark has previously worked in Georgia, where she spent one year as head coach of varsity boys soccer at Spalding High School. Her collegiate coaching experience includes two seasons (2002-03) as an assistant at the University of Tampa, where she was directly responsible for the training and development of the Spartans’ goalkeepers. In both of her seasons at Tampa, UT’s goalie was voted second-team all-conference and the 2003 Tampa team reached the NCAA postseason. Clark’s first collegiate coaching experience came as an assistant at American University in Washington, D.C., in 2000-01. In 2001, Clark’s work with the Eagles’ goalkeeper helped American earn a Patriot League co-championship and All-Patriot League and AllPatriot League Tournament honors for the student-athlete. Clark spent 2004 through 2006 helping develop some of the top youth soccer talent in Georgia as a staff coach with the Olympic Development Program/Georgia Youth Soccer Association. In addition, she spent 2006 as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Glory United Football Club in Hampton, Ga., and 2004 and 2005 as director of goalkeeping and staff coach for the AFC Lightning Soccer Club in Fayetteville, Ga. A native of Louisiana, the former Hope Handley played collegiate soccer as a goalkeeper at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. She was a member of VT’s first-ever recruiting class as a freshman in 1994 and lettered all four years at Tech. As a sophomore, Clark was selected as the Hokies’ most valuable player and named third-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region following a season in which she set the Atlantic-10 Conference single-season record for saves with 179. Clark was the first Tech women’s soccer player ever named AllMid-Atlantic Region. Clark played semi-professional soccer in 2005 and 2006 with the Atlanta Silverbacks in the women’s division of the United Soccer Leagues. She has been the assistant director of The Last Defense Goalkeeping Academy and worked with Region 3 Olympic Development Program on staff. Clark’s Keys Clark earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science and health promotion from Virginia Tech 2009 - AUM - 15-5-2 and her master’s degree in fitness management from American University.

Mary Byrne Graduate Assistant Coach

2008 - AUM - 6-12-1 2007 - AUM - 14-5-1 Overall (3 yrs.)- 35-22-4

Mary Byrne returns to the Bobcat soccer program as graduate assistant coach for the 2010 season. She spent the 2009-10 academic year as a graduate assistant in the administrative offices for Georgia College. A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., Byrne played four seasons (2005-08) for the Bobcats as a midfielder seeing action in 33 games with one start. She tallied five points on a goal and three assists, her lone strike marking the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over always-tough Tusculum College. Byrne is pursuing a Master’s Degree in educational technology.

2009 REVIEW AND RESULTS Bobcats garner first NCAA Tournament trip among other great moments

With a 13-3-4 record, best in the program's history, a 5-1-2 Peach Belt record, also best ever, and with several team and individual records broken, there is no doubt that Georgia College Soccer has become an elite program recognized Nationally with it's first NSCAA National Ranking as well as it's first-ever NCAA National Tournament Appearance. In perspective, this was truly an amazing season not just in the historical context of the program, but for any program at any time: A dominating team defense which was on top of the national statistics, being nationally ranked and making the NCAA tournament is a great year for any team and especially for a five-year old program in the middle of it's first coaching transition. After a tough pre-season schedule, the season started with a 0-0 tie against Belmont Abbey, not the way coaches and players would have envisioned, but in the second game against perennial regional powerhouse Tusculum College, a 21 win gave the team much needed confidence boost. Two more wins against non-conference opponents and a 3-0-1 record meant the team's first appearance in the NSCAA Regional Ranking, an honor maintained through the end of the season. The team's first conference match against UNC Pembroke would prove to be a test since UNCP was ranked in the top-10 nationally and undefeated. In an accident-filled game, UNCP would break through at the end of the half and hand the Bobcats its first loss of the season, and what would be the only regular season loss of the year. A four-game winning streak including a 1-0 win at home vs. Lander, preceded a much anticipated match against Armstrong Atlantic, who had been in the NCAA Tournament the last two years. After going down an early goal, the Bobcats showed much character and were able to score two goals before halftime. It seemed the score would hold up until the last minute of play when AASU scored a tying goal to send the game into OT, but neither team was able to break the deadlock. In the next six games, the Bobcats posted a 5-0-1 record, including four key PBC wins leading to the last regular season contest at Columbus State. CSU had already clinched the PBC Championship, and Georgia College could finish no higher than third place, its highest finish ever, but the game was a defensive battle, in which the tough Georgia College defense provided its 12th shutout. The Conference tournament brackets were set and the Bobcats beat Lander 2-0 in the first round to set up a rematch with UNC Pembroke in the semifinal in Evans, Ga. In a game where the Bobcats were out playing their opponents, a "fatal five minutes cost us the game," said Favero referring to a missed penalty kick for the Bobcats and allowing two goals right after that. A late tally off a corner kick proved to be too little. So could this great season have come to an end .... Georiga College would have to wait three long nights and two days to find out if their 13-2-4 record would be enough to get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. On a Monday afternoon, as the team gathered in the locker room, the announcement was made and the team exploded with joy and emotion. The Bobcats had done it ... they were on their way to the first-ever NCAA appearance and would face Catawba College, a team Favero was familiar with from his days in the South Atlantic Conference. The game started well for the team with the run of play and early scoring chances clearly on their favor. One of those clear chances was capitalized halfway through the first half on a goal by sophomore Kayla Emerson. The second half saw the momentum change and a couple of missed clearances led to the tying tally by Catawba. The uncharacteristic defensive lapses would prove to be the undoing of the team as in the first OT period, a similar play would lead to the last goal the team would allow in 2008, and with it the end of an incredible season.

HONORS

Georgia College also landed its first players on the NSCAA All-Region Team, as

senior forward Hayley Ferrell and junior defender Morgan Cobb earned slots on the Southeast Region squad. Ferrell and Cobb joined five other Bobcats on the All-PBC teams, as sophomores Jessica Binkowski, Mary Rob Plunkett, Ally Treat and Kayla Emerson joined freshman Karen Bonilla with all-conference honors. Junior Kara Teresi and freshman Megan McAlpin were named to the PBC All-Tournament Team. The Bobcats got it done in the classroom as well, as senior Beth Coughlin and Binkowski were selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. Coughlin, Jamie Nevin, Treat, Binkowski, Lyric Burnett, Jeni Day, Kelli McLane, Plunkett and Ferrell were also selected to the first Peach Belt All-Academic Team. The Bobcats also picked up a team academic award through the NSCAA and the National Ethics/Sportsmanship honor from the same organization.

PEACH BELT CONF ERENCE

Vision Statement

The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic, and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II.

We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a commonality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.

Now entering its 21st year of existence in 2010-11, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 28 national championships and 25 national finalist Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men's tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men's golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while AASU women's tennis has captured four titles overall. The 2008-09 season was among the conference’s most memorable. The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s and women’s tennis teams both won their respective national championships – for the second year in a row; a feat only done once before in college tennis. In addition, the Augusta State men’s basketball team became the first conference program to make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Elite Eight, Armstrong Atlantic became the first PBC volleyball team ever to

advance to the Elite Eight and the North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation and reached the World Series. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. For 2009-10, the Peach Belt has grown once again with the addition of the University of Montevallo and Flagler College, giving the PBC 13 members, the most the league has ever had. The addition of the two schools returns the PBC to the state of Florida and expands the league into Alabama for the first time. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. The conference currently holds championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women.
