World Card Making Day is coming on October 4, 2014! And along with the holiday comes a contest. We’ll give you more details on that in the next issue, but we wanted to show you some of the cards that were submitted to the contest last year that we, the editors, s, loved! Check ’em em out!

Hello Smart Phone Card by Jennifer Ingle This cute and oh-so-clever card is one of my favorites because it bridges the technology gap in giving a handmade card within our increasingly electronic world. It also got a double like from my tween daughter when she saw it, so it MUST be awesome! -Jennifer Schaerer

Peace, Love, & Joy Card by Alice Wertz Check this out: Alice die-cut multiples of the word joy and adhered them together to create a thick word. She then stamped it with a music staff and repeated that design on the card using different colors and second generation stamping. Truly brought joy to my day! -Stacy Croninger

Floral Hey There Card by Emily Branch This card shows how the little details can really make a card. Notice the soft two-tone stamped owers and foliage, the pinked washi tape, sequins, and thread, plus that rounded corner with patterned paper behind; this is a gorgeously designed card! -Holly Anderson

Earthy Thanks a Bunch Card by Mandy LaCroix BasicGrey’s Persimmon collection was one of my favorites from the fall season, so when I saw this card, I immediately loved it. Mandy’s use of blue staples, die-cut cork, and embossed woodgrain are just the right touches when coupled with this collection. -Kerri Miller

Floral Zigzag Hello Card by Amanda Coleman This trendy card is so simple to recreate, but it looks like something you could find at a chic boutique. A fresh color combination, bold flower, and graphic print all blend harmoniously in this delightful card. And those sequins? Just like sprinkles on top of the perfect cupcake. -Susan Opel

While I love fall, the traditional fall color palette does not come naturally to me. When I saw this leaf illustration, my mind overowed with possibilities for how it could be translated into card designs. I used the color palette and the concept of combining different leaves as a starting place to stretch my creativity. The end result is totally different from my usual fun & cute style, but I am equally thrilled with how it turned out!

Gold is a trend that is not going anywhere! This Gold Foil Paper from Fancy Pants Designs feels just like patterned paper, but with a beautiful metallic shine. It can be cut with die templates and even be embossed. On this card, I used the Gold Foil Paper to create my own sentiment with my die-cutting machine and accents with a basic hole punch.

Die-cut inlay is my favorite go-to technique when using specialty papers or any other materials that have a “white” exposed edge. Think of it as a puzzle project with as many steps as you would like to add. This technique allows you to hide the raw edges of material and gives you a smooth streamlined effect. I also like the subtle effect of die-cutting a shape into your base and adding the same cuts back into the pieces for a tone-on-tone look. m La a Lain

The watercolor trend is bigger than ever, and I just love the look. It can be a little intimidating, however, if you’re like me and don’t have a lot of skill with a paintbrush. Watercolor pencils are the perfect solution. Just color your design, and when blended with water the pigment turns into gorgeous watercolor. A reďŹ llable water brush pen will give you even more control and help you create beautiful watercolor designs!

When I’m stuck in a creative rut, I look for ways to add texture and dimension to my paper crafting projects. I was recently introduced to a brand new steel die that creates a 3D bow shape in a single run of my manual die cutter. I am a sucker for ingenious products like this die! It not only die-cuts paper and cardstock, but effortlessly cuts through my favorite felt. And the best part? Only one piece of material to work with. Fun and easy!

I love die-cutting shapes from the center of other die cuts, and I can easily do it all in one step using the Sizzix Magnetic Platform. It holds wafer-thin dies right in place without having to tape them. For this card, I arranged the pinked rectangle, tree, and sentiment dies and ran them through my Big Shot all at once. How R U Card

Shufflin’ Card

Designer: Miriam Prantner Arlington, VA, USA

Designer: May Sukyong Park Culver City, CA, USA

WHAT WE LOVED: Miriam’s mind-boggling and abstract world map was inspired by a map she found on Pinterest. After tracing the design, she painstakingly cut many different pieces of washi with a craft knife. Talk about dedication to a design. The result is absolutely splendid!

WHAT WE LOVED: Inventive is the name of the game with this unbelievably cool and funky card! May slaved over making the equalizer at the bottom of her card with even widths of colorful washi. Her follow-through on the theme of this card, with the appropriate sentiment and heat embossed record, is the icing on the cake.

Paper Crafts & Scrapbooking

Bold & Graphic Birthday Card Designer: Vera Wirianta Yates Sugar Land, TX, USA WHAT WE LOVED: The spacing on this card is spot on, and Vera did it without a ruler! The width of her washi tape served as a guide for where to place the next strip. For the center portion, she very carefully cut each piece with a craft knife. If you look closely, you’ll notice that she moved some of the colors around for visual interest. Very inspiring!

All Things are Possible Card Designer: Yoonsun Hur Sydney, New South Wales, Australia WHAT WE LOVED: This card is simply breathtaking with strong design and expert execution! The pompom trim placed over the layered decorative tape strips anchors the beautiful blooms and gives a sumptuous feel to this lovely card.

Celebrate Today Card

Beautiful Ride Card

Designer: Asty Purbasari Jakarta, Indonesia

Designer: Iwona Palamountain Sunbury, Victoria, Australia

WHAT WE LOVED: Washi-wrapped wood veneer stars, little strips above the sentiment and at the bottom right, and two layered strips of washi beneath a die-cut sentiment make for a truly unique washi masterpiece. The angled design and muted color palette set Asty’s design apart.

WHAT WE LOVED: What sets Iwona’s card apart is her inventive take on the bike icon. Those washi-covered wheels take us for a whimsical ride. We also appreciated her expertise in lining up the patterns on the tape strips before diecutting them. Even the rolling hills that ground her design are washi tape.

Celebrate Card

Happy Birthday Card

Designer: Sabrina Alery St. Charles, IA, USA

Designer: Lysa Q. Rohrer Chandler, AZ, USA

WHAT WE LOVED: Sabrina made bold color and pattern choices when choosing her decorative tape. Die-cut some jaunty stars and back them with glitter paper, and this fun and quirky card becomes something extra special!

WHAT WE LOVED: Black is where it’s at with Lysa’s welldesigned card. The white card base, light washi colors, and the touch of shine along with the chic addition of black caught our eye. The inlaid happy and perfectly placed enamel dots make this card a standout.

Oh Happy Day Card

For All You Do Card

Designer: Lalo Ishiki-Kalahele Honolulu, HI, USA

Designer: Jessica Pascarella Pearland, TX, USA

WHAT WE LOVED: Lalo took plain washi tape to new heights! She created her eye-catching plaid by combining tapes in varying widths. With the help of a ruler, she was able to skillfully place each strip for a custom card background.

WHAT WE LOVED: While there’s not a lot of washi tape found on this card, it’s what Jessica did with h washi that made this card a winner. The for alll and do o were stamped in spots where she’d used washi tape as a mask. The sweet washi tape banner completes this charming design.

Deer Confetti Card

Script Thanks Card

Designer: Erin Lee Schreiner McKinney, TX, USA

Designer: Marcie Sharp Shetland, Ontario, Canada

WHAT WE LOVED: The majestic deer on this card shines amidst a bed of neon washi confetti, giving it an extra dose of trendiness. The focal point awlessly hits the sweet spot, and the thin pink line grounds the card design for the perfect ďŹ nishing touch.

WHAT WE LOVED: Marcie knocked it out of the park with contrast. The colorful pink and yellow tempered with neutral black and white make for a striking design. The black negative portions of the sentiment make this card particularly unique.

Feathered Thanks Card

Make a Wish Card

Designer: Amy Kolling Topeka, KS, USA

Designer: Archana Bhurke Neu-Ulm, Bayern, Germany

WHAT WE LOVED: Feathers are in, and the feathers on this card are made from patterned washi tape, giving Amy’s card that ooh-la-la factor. Gather the handmade feathers into a bouquet and anchor it with a stylish gold sentiment for a stunning and extraordinary design.

WHAT WE LOVED: Fabric tape can add softness to any design, and Archana chose perfectly feminine patterns to complement her sweet handmade owers and leaves. The hoop was created by winding decorative tape around a bangle. Clever!

Popsicle Stick Hello Card

You Totally Rock Card

Designer: Jill Dewey Hawkins Westmont, IL, USA

Designer: Kristie Larsen Singapore

WHAT WE LOVED: Jill’s washi-wrapped Popsicle sticks steal the show! The random yet deliberate wrapping adds a punch of fun and whimsy, all set on a clean white backdrop. Don’t miss her perfect details: the scored lines behind the color (for interest), the monochromatic frame (for depth), and the delightful stitching (for balance and texture).

WHAT WE LOVED: Kristie used negative space to her advantage on this energetic card! The white sun ray die corrals the bursts of colorful washi tape, making this an exciting design for a teen or anyone full of life. Put simply, this card totally rocks!

Celebrate With Style Card

For Lovely You Card

Designer: Tessa Wise Woodbridge, VA, USA

Designer: Keren Baker Liverpool, United Kingdom

WHAT WE LOVED: Tessa took bits of washi tape and randomly layered them on a piece of cardstock. What may have started as utter chaos morphed into a stylish bow once die-cut. Tessa gave the washi bow center stage with a fitting sentiment and delightful finishing touches like the doily and the tiny stamped gold stars.

WHAT WE LOVED: The delicacy of Keren’s design caught our eye. You’ll notice that her garland is made of washi tape that has been punched and sandwiched over embroidery thread. Simple strips of sparkle add to this sophisticated design.

You & Me Card

Colorful Doilies Card

Designer: Jaclyn Miller Indianapolis, IN, USA

Designer: Jo Reynolds Townsville, Queensland, Australia

WHAT WE LOVED: The angles. The color choices. The glitz. This card oozes with class. By conďŹ ning the torn bits of washi tape to one part of the card, Jaclyn pulls off a clean and graphic card bursting with style.

WHAT WE LOVED: The traditional doily gets a makeover with a pinwheel of layered washi tape. Set on a dark background and accented with sequins and a saturated sentiment, Jo achieves a stunning look.
