For me, the architectural design process is like watercolor painting: it is the act of composing with a dynamic medium to create an experience that captures the spirit of a place.

A PUBLIC ROOM
Market Square creates a place to celebrate the vibrant mix of residents, producers, and visitors that the Pike Place Market brings together. This design proposes a market square shaped by a new market hall, a senior housing community, and a waterfront stair tower. It provides a civic room for the people of Seattle.

AN URBAN CONNECTION
The removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct gives the Pike Place Market the opportunity both physically and financially - to connect to the waterfront of Seattle. Market Square achieves this with a stair tower which entices visitors to climb to viewing platforms with breathtaking views of the Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, Mt. Rainier, and the city and port of Seattle. The stair brings pedestrians down to street level, reinforcing the existing urban infrastructure and rebuilding the street front on Elliott Way.

THE MARKETPLACE
The market hall is a glulam wood frame building designed with material lifecycle in mind. It is designed as a skin-on-frame building to acknowledge different material lifespans. The wood frame and flooring system are independent of the enclosure system, allowing for repair and recladding. Concrete topped cross-laminated timber acts as both a resilient flooring and an exposed ceiling below. The structural system allows for an open market hall experience while providing permanent, enclosed shops. The deep plaza faรงade is conceived as a scaffolding which provides ample space to enjoy the fresh air and a generous covered edge below for rainy days.
A SENIOR HOUSING COMMUNITY
An affordable housing building for seniors frames the southeast edge of the market square. It is a podium building, with commercial units and social services occupying plaza level. In this way, we celebrate that the Pike Place Market is a provider of shelter. The plaza facade is designed to convey a sense of home within a bustling urban area. The building steps back to give generous solar exposure to its central courtyard and to the plaza below.

PROCESS
A series of physical models formed the heart of the design process, supported by architectural and experiential sketches. This process of physical modeling continued from urban design and massing at 1/50”=1’ and 1/32”=1’, through building design and detailing at 1/16”=1’ and 1/4”=1’. These tools allowed us to understand and coordinate the many level changes on the site, hone in the site response, and design several key facades.

phase
In this project, my role was to design and coordinate a nine unit housing development in West Seattle. I designed three unit types and coordinated the structural engineer, civil engineer, and city permitting process. My goal for this project was to create an ensemble of houses, where each home is unique yet related to the whole.

Southerland,
DOCUMENTATION AND COMMUNICATION
SCHOOL
completed
2016
In this project, I supported the principal architect and landscape architect throughout the master planning process. I produced as-built drawings of campus buildings, facilitated meetings and workshops, created a physical model of the future campus, produced diagrams and renderings, and compiled the final document.
A GUIDE FOR GROWTH
To develop this campus plan, Johnson+Southerland led a series of workshops, interviews, and conversations with all stakeholders. The resulting plan includes a combination of new buildings and renovations to the existing Middle School and the beloved Gracemont Hall. The plan will allow the school to gracefully embark upon its second century by meeting their goals of creating a heart of campus and defining the main entry and perimeter.

DESIGN, DOCUMENTATION, CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION
The goal of this project was to provide outdoor play space and a parking garage for the Hamlin Robinson School. I provided design and documentation, including parking garage layout, coordination with engineers and landscape architects, and design and detailing of the utility building.

THE POETICS OF AIR
This skylight design highlights daylight and passive ventilation in an entirely human-powered system. Precise counterweights and gear reductions allow one person to operate three skylights simultaneously by turning a large handwheel. The skylights rise up and away from the building, transforming the space below and evoking the poetics of air movement. Click image to view animation.

MECHANICS AND ENGINEERING
The counterweight is engineered to allow a person to operate a set of three skylights over 12 seconds, applying approximately one quarter horsepower. The moment force of the counterweight is closely matched up to that of the window throughout the rotation. The largest differences between the two, at the beginning and end of the motion, help the skylight remain fully open or fully closed. The openings themselves are sized to achieve half of the cooling load of a typical atrium oďŹƒce building via stack ventilation.

A LIGHT, SOLID FOOTING
The idea for this perch stool was to create a minimal yet expressive structure. The chair is triangulated in three dimensions, allowing it to be made of slender members. The seat is made of unsplit leather, a membrane structure that molds to the body over time.
CONNECTION DESIGN
Because of the many compound angles, pegged bird’s mouth joints are used at key connections in the piece. The same pegs that hold the wood together also create the seat connection, where the leather is wrapped over the leg and held in place by friction. The pegs are made from the same piece of wood as the frame for visual and structural continuity.
