Welcome

Table of Contents

As I begin my 38th year as Recreation Director for the Town of East Fishkill, I’d like to invite all residents to take advantage of our many facilities, programs and activities offered year-round. I hope this guide will assist you in planning activities and events for the coming year. In East Fishkill, we offer a variety of programs for all ages: • At Red Wing Park, you can swim, fish and picnic. Friday nights at the Rec are free concerts. • Our sports, offered throughout the year at town parks, include: baseball, softfall, basketball, soccer, football, lacrosse, tennis, yoga, golf, roller hockey, volleyball, skateboarding, Frisbee, zumba, field hockey and handball. If you like jogging, biking or walking, use our trails at the Hopewell Rec and at the Lime Kiln facility, where we also have new fitness equipment. • Seniors can join our popular program, which meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Community Center. There are also monthly senior trips. • Youngsters may attend our 7-week summer camp. Our bus trips have a variety of destinations. We in recreation look foward to seeing you throughout the year. Please keep this guide handy and support the local businesses that advertise here. Follow us at Facebook.com/efrecreation. Email us at recreation1@eastfishkillny.org, and don’t forget to check Channel 22 on Cablevision.

On Route 376, next to Town Hall The library serves the community with almost 70,000 books, magazines, newspapers, audio books, music CDs and DVDs as well as nine computers for patron use, three catalog computers and one children’s computer fully loaded with lots of pre-school educational programs. We offer databases with magazine and newspaper articles not found through free Internet search engines and we have one of the busiest programming schedules in the area. The East Fishkill Community Library has developed into a cultural hub with over 180,000 visits per year. Free wireless, ongoing book sale shelf, two big book sales per year, downloadable ebooks & audio books, Nooks and Kindles available to borrow and take home, and an active Friends of the Library fundraising group (www.befriendyourlibrary.org) help make East Fishkill one of the busiest libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System.

The 1873 Hopewell Depot Restoration

36 Railroad Ave., Hopewell Junction (off Route 376 near Hopewell Inn) April-October open weekends; November-March open Saturdays or by appointment; call 845-226-7631 http://www.hopewelldepot.org Before the Dutchess & Columbia Railroad built its depot, Hopewell was an old wagon crossing to the northeast with just a church and a mill. The Depot spawned a thriving railroad center. By the 1890s, new lines came through and the community became Hopewell Junction. For the next three generations, the busy railroad facilities were the focus of life in the area, and its history is rich and diverse, but it was supplanted by the automobile in the later half of the 20th century.

21 County Rail Trail project spurred activity. In April of 2012, through the efforts and donations of volunteers from all over the region – and even far off countries – the north waiting room opened as a visitor center and display area illustrating rail era history. The Depot contains artifacts and graphic representations of Hopewell’s proud railroading history. Efforts are also underway to replicate the rail yard’s 19th century control tower, and provide public restrooms for the trail head. How to get there … Approaching Hopewell from the north on NY 376, the road takes a very sharp right at the Hopewell Inn. Looking carefully, turn left at that point onto Railroad Avenue. The Depot is about 100 yards straight ahead on the right.

In 1995, a small, independent group of citizens began an arduous grass-roots campaign to save the decaying depot. Progress was gradual until the Dutchess

The wheels of Emmanuel’s wheelchair are stuck in the wood chips of the playground and he turns to his mother and says “Mommy I can’t play with the other kids, I want to go home.” As Alexis struggles to push her walker through the grass to the swings she looks up at her grandmother and says “This is too hard.” Do you remember running around the playground when you were a kid? Maybe hanging from the monkey bars or seeing who could swing the highest? For children with disabilities those opportunities are lost. Please join Julie’s Jungle in our mission to build a handicapped accessible playground in Dutchess County for all children of all abilities.

The program goals are to: • Provide community CPR/AED instruction and promote CPR/AED awareness • Advocate & lobby for heart health at the local and state levels • Promote community heart screening events • Provide CPR Anytime toolkits within the community to encourage more people to learn CPR We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community members who have donated funding for the equipment and training; East Fishkill Soccer Club, East Fishkill Roller Hockey, World Cheer, Southern Dutchess Football and Cheer, Sloper Willen Community Ambulance Grant.
