have to admit that I saw the inside of the kennel for the first time recently and I have lived here since March of 2010. It’s out by the Stables and I didn’t know where the Stables were until I became the General Manager a year ago. When you read the article you will learn about some of the improvements we will be making to the kennel structure in the near future. However, what makes the whole thing work are the volunteers. When you have a chance, I would encourage you to meet with one of the volunteers and take a short tour of the facility. I learned years ago (through personal experience) that rescue dogs make great pets. I am sure that you will be touched by the rescue story in the article. Also in this issue is a feature on the Holly Lake Volunteer Fire Department and its Chief, Joe Cirasola. The article talks more about the new fire engine than Joe because Joe doesn’t like to talk about himself, but I will give you a great lead in for the next time any of you speak with Joe. Ask him to tell you about the two babies that he has delivered since joining the department.

BOOMER!

He is an appropriately named Black Mouth Cur/Shepard mix who you may have seen around the ranch a time or two. He now has a new home! The story of how Boomer came to live with his new family, is both heartwarming and entertaining.

Article by Jennifer McGee and Julie Cathey

Chuck & Dawn Bahr Already had two rescues that are much smaller than Boomer. One day they heard them barking outside and saw a tan colored boxer and Shepard looking mix wandering around by their fence.

huck shared their story, “I called security to see if someone was missing this type of dog. I found out he had been picked up earlier that Tuesday by Sgt. Dan Barncord at HLR Security, but apparently had gotten out. A couple hours later we went to dinner, got home about 9:30pm, and there is this dog again, sitting in our driveway in front of the garage. Apparently he broke out of the kennels again, and ran well over a mile back to our house. We then called Michelle at the dog rescue for suggestions, who then asked if we could keep him in the back yard until morning. We agreed, but when we woke up the next morning, he had made it somehow on to our back patio and was sleeping on our loveseat. Leap of Faith Rescue helped us look for a possible owner on Facebook and other locations, but no one claimed him. We discussed it, and kind of felt he adopted us…and there is no way he will leave, so we were like,”What the heck, c’mon and join us. I guess he

figured out, “Hey I have a pretty sweet gig here…” My wife Dawn said, “This dog is like a boomerang; you send it off, and it keeps coming right back over and over.” Hence, the name “Boomer” was appropriate. Michelle at Leap of Faith helped us navigate through the process of getting him evaluated. Dr. Hobbs, the vet in Hawkins was the first vet in the area who could see him. He was then neutered, got all his shots, microchipped, and had other tests done. Unfortunately, he tested positive for heartworms. He also displayed some significant anxiety issues, especially with separation. Any time we leave the house and no one is home, he kinda freaks out. He will hurdle our back fence to go looking for us, and often makes lots of friends along the way. It’s a rare event that he gets out now, but occasionally we do get a call from a neighbor saying that Boomer has paid them a visit. We have been tempted to put a tag on him that says “No Worries, I’ll Head Home on My Own!” Dr. Hobbs thinks he is a mix of a Black Mouth Cur and

Chuck and Dawn have a message for the residents of HLR; “We encourage anyone who has the time and resources to help with the rescue group to do so. You will not find a more loving, forgiving loyal companion in these domestic animals, and the folks at the rescue have been just awesome. They work hard behind the scenes with minimal resources. “

some type of Shepard, maybe German Shepard. His demeanor around kids is awesome. We had some good friends over for dinner recently, and they brought their grandson. Boomer loved that kid and vice versa. He is just a great dog. Even though he has some health issues, we don’t throw out the baby out with the bathwater. All God’s creatures, (especially us humans!) are imperfect, so we roll with it. After training and medication, including heartworm treatment, Boomer has thrived. Michelle and Leap of Faith Canine Adoptions have been a great resource to help in make this a successful rescue with a forever home. “ Everyone around town seems to know Boomer from the Facebook posts. Chuck is a retired paramedic, and stopped by the HLR fire station not too long ago to say hi to his friends there. “How’s Boomer?” two

of them asked. Chuck said, “How in the world do you know about Boomer?” They replied, “Everyone does…he is hilarious and fun to see on Facebook.” The same has happened at the Fore Seasons Restaurant, and to Dawn at her Monday night Bunco game. Chuck and Dawn said, “You know, we never planned on getting another dog. Our house size was perfect, our travel trailer is the perfect size for two small dogs, but…sometimes you gotta open your heart and realize, nah, this is meant to be. So “Boomer”, “BoomTown”, “Boom-Boom”, and the other assorted names we have for him will now be a resident at HLR for years to come.“

Michael and Linda have a passion for helping people build healthy relationships.

MEET

YOUR NEIGHBOR page 10 | This is The Life

HLR Resident Since: 2010 Holly Lake Ranch Clubs and Activities: Michael is a volunteer Marshall at the Golf Course. Interesting facts: The Lanphere’s are starting a Bible study on the book of Acts that is open to all HLR residents. Website: www.lifefourseministries.com

Michael and Linda have a passion for helping people build healthy relationships. Michael states, “We both came from dysfunction and it’s because if this that we are able to see how powerful the word of God is.” They extend their passion by teaching seminars on leadership development and leadership team building and have been teaching on Youth With A Mission bases around the world since 1987. With the help of many dear friends and family members, Michael published a book on their teachings titled In His Image, with a goal of further helping people to see their God given personality characteristics. In the book, they use Myers Briggs and Kiersey Temperament theories, combined with Biblical principles for relationships to help people embrace their differences and build stronger relationships.

M

ike and Linda Lanphere have been married for 47 years and worked in the pastoral ministry since 1979. In this period of time they have served on staff of several large churches where they directed Marriage, Family and Pastoral counseling ministries. They have planted two churches, one in Moreno Valley where they served the community for eight years and in Yorba Linda, Ca. where they served for five years.

When asked what attracted you and Linda to Holly Lake Ranch, Michael replied, “There was a strong contrast in the serenity of Southern California and Holly Lake Ranch. Us city folks we’re ready for a new chapter in a completely different environment. HLR was very attractive. There are several things we love, the slower pace, the woods, the amenities, the gated community, and more than anything the people. We have great neighbors and have met some wonderful people here.”

They lived most of their lives in California before visiting longtime friends, Mike and JoAnn Clark at their home in Holly Lake Ranch in 2009 and falling in love with the community and all it has to offer. Shortly thereafter, they purchased their home on Pine Bark Glen and made the move to East Texas. Once they were settled in to their new home, they founded Life Course Ministries. As they state on their website, www.lifecourseministries.com “The goal of Life Course Ministries is to equip individuals, couples and ministry teams with needed tools to make the most of their relationships and mission in life.”

HOLLY LAKE

HEROES Article by Brandy Akins

Photos by Gary Edwards

I’m sure many of you have met or know Joe Cirasola very well. You may have seen him around the golf course a time or two but probably know him more from the Holly Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

J

oe is currently serving as the fire chief and has done so for 4 years. He moved to Holly Lake Ranch from Brooklyn, New York in 1999 to be closer to his family. “Believe it or not” says Joe, before he retired he owned and operated a hair salon for 20 years. 12 years ago, not to the day I’m sure, he was playing golf with a friend who invited him to a meeting for HLVFD and he just couldn’t resist volunteering. “We are all boys at heart, they let me ride in the truck and play with the sirens and I was hooked.” The Holly Lake Fire Department stays pretty busy all year long,

page 12 | This is The Life

according to Joe they had over 549 calls last year. 2/3 of the calls are usually first responder calls. They assist EMS and respond to calls over 58 square miles. The HLVFD is made up of 23 members, 4 of which are women. The volunteers go through some rigorous training through Texas A&M TEEX Brayton Fire training to make sure they are well trained and can handle the emergencies that arise in the community. Most of the training is funded by the Texas Forrest Service. The VFD also host several fundraisers (Golf Tournaments & Waffle breakfasts) each year to purchase equipment and other supplies needed. They have

recently received a new truck that cost $290,000 not to mention the $30,00 of added equipment. This new fire truck is perfect for fighting fires in wooded areas. The truck is shorter and sits lower to the ground. This allows the truck to assist in tighter more confined areas. This truck is also equipped with a compressed air foam system that lowers the amount of water used by half in most cases. Joe states, “It gets hard at times because we have to respond to emergencies involving our neighbors, friends and family but we have the best of the best here at the fire department.”

The Holly Lake Fire Department would like to send out a big THANK YOU to the community for attending fundraisers, donating water and Gatorade. “We feel blessed this awesome community supports us.

The rescue organization that helped Boomer become a member of the Bahr family is Leap of Faith Canine Adoptions. Volunteer Michelle Barnett states “When we started out it was a matter of finding dogs homes before they get put down.” Although Leap of Faith is a “kill facility”, they have only euthanized three dogs due to health reasons and safety for the residents of HLR. Smaller dogs go to the Forever Pets organization due to the fact that the facilities do not accommodate such small pets because they can get out of the facility easily. The facility is in the process of being remodeled by Leap of Faith volunteers and will get new fences, updated heat, air and electrical, and the ceilings will be lowered to keep the dogs cooler. The organization is made up of volunteers that rely on fundraisers, donations and personal contributions to care for the dogs. Michelle Barnett states “As long as they’re on HLR property, they are our responsibility.” The volunteers at Leap of Faith have adopted dogs out to families from Dallas and Tyler and as far as Jefferson and Oklahoma City. Leap of Faith Canine Adoptions currently needs: • • • • • • • • • • •

Surveillance Camera Food and bedding Flea and tick meds Heartworm meds Services provided to the dogs: All vaccinations Heartworm test Spay/Neuter Heartguard Nextguard (fleas/ticks) Antibiotics and Worm meds

CLASSIC CAR

SHOWCASE Article by Jennifer McGee

Photos by Gary Edwards

Patrick’s love for the British cars goes all the way back to childhood when he read a children’s book titled The Red Car about a man who was a race car driver and his relationship with a little boy..

A

s it would turn out, he wasn’t the only young boy who was inspired by that book. Many years later he was telling a fellow Austin Healey enthusiast that story when his friend quickly replied, “I read the same book!” While stationed at Cecilville Naval Base right outside of Jacksonville, Florida, Patrick met a man who had an Austin Healey that no one was able to get running. Being an aircraft electrician, Pat was able to look at the wiring diagram in the back of the book and after two days of working in the freezing cold weather he was able to get it running. Pat said, “It was after that I sort of became my friend’s chief mechanic for that car.” He worked on his friend’s car as a favor and during that time fell even

page 18 | This is The Life

more in love with British cars and specifically the Austin-Healey. Pat bought his 1967 Austin Healy 3000 in Providence, Rode Island at 22 years old for $1,000. It was 1972. He called his car “The last of the big Healy’s” and he drove it as his primary car for many years. Even cross country from time to time. Patrick states, “There is a big enough engine to get up and keep up with anything on the road.” Pat faced many challenges while owning and rebuilding his car but the biggest was finding parts. He stated that “an Austin Healy owner does a lot of their own work and parts were hard to come by because they had stopped manufacturing those 5 years before he purchased his car. The joke amongst Austin Healey owners was that when you met another Austin Healey owner,

they would shake your hand and look over your shoulder to see what parts you have on your car that they’ve been looking for.” He would go down to the base hobby shops and you rely on a community of Austin Healy owns to give guidance on how to work on his car. The most recent restoration took 6.5 years and he started dismantling in 2007. The car got a new frame in 2009 and then they started putting it back together. After new brake lines and master cylinder and an engine overhaul, everything that was original was either refurbished or replaced. The restoration was a total nut and bolt job where everything was taken apart down to last rivet and then rebuilt piece by piece refurbishing and/or replacing the parts as needed. During the restoration,

1967 Austin Healey 3000, Repainted original exterior color, “metallic golden beige”. Pat’s Healey was one of 551 Healeys painted this color which was towards the end of production of the big Healey’s. A custom built air-conditioning system was also added for comfort.

Pat hosted tech sessions for club members so other Austin Healey owners could learn and allow them to do some hands of training to work on their own cars. But don’t let him fool you, his wife Janet will tell you, “There were a few of them working and the rest were eating donuts and drinking coffee.” Pat’s only hope is that if he dies before his wife he hopes she doesn’t sell the Healey for what he told her it cost to restore it. (You think he’s got more money in it than he told his wife he had in it?). He says he wife also enjoys the Healey and the friendship of many the wives who make the events. His wife picked out the interior color and insisted on leather and she even insisted on chrome wire wheels! Pat was once asked by another car enthusiast at a car show after telling that story if his wife had a sister. Patrick will tell you there are two types of Austin Healey owners, “owners” and “enthusiasts.” Pat is an enthusiast. He’s been active is Austin Healy clubs’ across the US and even helped to found a club called Saint John’s Austin Healey Club in the 70’s and the North Texas Austin Healey Club in 1979 where he has been President of for the last 5 years. Pat attends national Austin Healey meetings

What are your greatest memories created in your car?

“1976 Donald Healey came over from England and made a national meet. I made that one. Because I wanted to meet this guy! He was already in his 70’s at the time…So I drove from Jacksonville Florida 950 miles to Cherry Hill, New Jersey and I got the award for the longest distance drive in an Austin-Healey.”

“Me and my oldest Son went to a conclave in 1988 in ShangriLa resort in the Eastern part of Oklahoma. It was during the summer time and he had a camcorder that he was photographing everything with and a skateboard and we had that car packed tight. He was 14 years old, he had so much fun doing that. We had people in the club who’s kids were already grown and they weren’t little anymore some of the guys’ wives were saying, “Come on Peter, I’m going to buy you a Coke.” They went on a rally with two guys and he got to sit in the back seat they took him through the rally and he still

Patrick and Janet Yoas recently became full time retired and full time residents of Holly Lake Ranch after originally buying their home on Clear Water Trail as a weekend home. They like the security, all of the the amenities and the top rated medical facilities that are within driving distance of HLR. Patrick says, “I think we have everything here.”
