Editorial Well, I suppose it was inevitable. Confined in the CPR HQ with only the office cat for company, the temptation to get out and about to see some really cool cars proved just too much. As such, this issue is loaded with some fantastic show reports, and judging by the torrential rain that is bouncing off the window as I write this, they could be the last ones for a while. Chomondeley Pageant of Power was good, but very muddy, the London to Brighton Classic, Kit & Sports Run was a superb day out...despite the rain, but the one event that really stood out for all the right reasons was The Supercar Event which took place at Dunsfold Park in Surrey. It was great to see so many incredible cars assembled in one place, a real ‘petrolhead’s Nirvana if you like, but it was the actual nature of the event that made it really special. The owners of the cars gave up their time, petrol, and in some cases several rather expensive tyres, to give rides to the general public around the ‘Top Gear’ test track in exchange for charitable donations. Our friends the Sporting Bears Motor Club were there too, and while most of the ‘supercars’ were using ‘The Stig’s’ track, the Bears took their passengers out onto the local roads for a quick blast round the Surrey countryside. It was certainly a very worthwhile event, with around £110,000 taken over the two days and all profits going to the Children’s Trust Charity. Elsewhere in this issue, we are delighted to welcome Sarah Bennett-Baggs on board as one of our occasional contributors. Sarah is an experienced racing driver and has campaigned in Aston Martin GT cars, and of course her ‘Barbie pink’ Porsche 911. She says she will give a “bird’s view” on racing and in this issue she recounts her participation in the recent Tour Britannia rally here in the UK. It really is a brilliant feature, so make sure you don’t miss it! As always, we hope you enjoy reading this issue of Classic, Performance & Retro. Drive Safe!

‘Time Warp’ Mini Under The Hammer At Silverstone Classic The chance to buy a ‘time-warp’ 1960 Austin (Mini) Seven 850 with only 2,600 miles on the clock from new, could be yours when the car is auctioned on July 21. The amazingly original car was used sparingly between 1960 and 1962 and then it placed in a heated storage unit where it remained until now. As a result, the bodywork is immaculate and the car comes with its original spare key, rubber mats, tax disc holder (with 1962 tax disc!), wheel-brace and jack, and even the handbook. The car is being sold by Silverstone Auctions during the much anticipated Silverstone Classic event which is attended by visitors from all over the world. The car has an estimated sale prices of £20-25,000, although considering its condition and rarity, it could well fetch much more. The big question though, is just what would you do with it if you bought it? If you drive it and add mileage, it becomes just another Mini, and would almost certainly start to depreciate. You could of course just put it back into storage, but then it becomes just a very pricy ornament!

Sergio Pininfarina Dies Aged 85 One of the great names in car design - Sergio Pininfarina - died at his home aged 85 on July 3. During his illustrious career he was responsible for creating designs for manufacturers like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Peugeot and even Bentley. Among his Ferrari designs were the F40, the P4/5, the 288GTO and the 612 Scaglietti. He was honourary chairman of the Pininfarina group and a life senator in his native Italy.

Wolseleys Get Ready For 2000 Mile UK Tour To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Wolseley Register is organizing a ‘Tour of Britain’ which will take place between August 4-20. Apart from marking Her Majesty’s special year, the run will also raise money towards the upkeep of Nuffield Place, an historic building which played a vital role in the development of the Wolseley brand. The National Trust has taken over the running of Nuffield Place, which was the former home of Lord and Lady Nuffield, by Nuffield College in Oxford. Lord Nuffield, probably better known as William Morris, played a major part in the fledgling British motor industry and also in the preservation of the Wolseley marque. He purchased Wolseley Motors Ltd in 1927 from the receivers to ensure the Wolseley name survived and went on to produce a range of cars, many of which form a vital part of the classic car movement today. The Wolseley Register says that the fundraising team of the National Trust is supportive of the tour and that the route will pass through some of the most picturesque parts of the United Kingdom. German Classics Head To Beaulieu

July 22, will see a wide variety of German classics heading to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in Hampshire for ‘The German Show.’ The event is being held to showcase the best of German automotive engineering and there will be a number of impressive cars on display. Among the marques represented will be Porsche, BMW, MercedesBenz and Volkswagen, and owners of German cars are being encouraged to bring them along and display them at the show for the day. Visitors will be able to take part in a ‘show and shine’ competition, where the winner will collect the coveted Beaulieu Trophy. Spirit of MotorSport UK Awards Announced Silverstone MotorSport UK, the Motorsport show that promotes all categories of national motorsport and which takes place on the November 3-4, 2012, has joined forces with Ravenol high performance engine oils to create The Spirit of MotorSport UK Awards; a £10,000 prize fund for national motorsport competitors, which is one of the largest prizes in national motorsport. The 2012 Sprit of MotorSport UK Awards will be open to competitors in three categories - Karting, Racing and Rallying, and will be awarded to three competitors, who will share a selection of prizes worth more than £10,000. JRM Nissan Takes ‘Photo-Finish’ Win At Brands Hatch Jann Mardenborough, driving the No35 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3, crossed the finishing line at Brands Hatch on June 25, just two-hundredths of a second ahead of the No.007 Aston Martin Vantage GT3, to take his own and the GT-R’s first major race victory, a year to the day that he won Nissan’s GT Academy competition. Since winning the competition that turns PlayStation gamers into real-life racing drivers, Mardenborough has raced with GT Academy Team RJN, primarily in the Blancpain Endurance Series and also in the British GT Championship. “What a great way to finish what has been the best year of my life so far,” said Jann after the race. “Winning GT Academy has presented me with so many opportunities and I’m delighted that Al (Buncombe) and I could get the job done in the Nissan GT-R today.” The start of the British GT race was tasked to Buncombe and it soon became apparent that the British racer was going to settle for nothing less than victory. Starting from 10th place on the grid, Al was up to fourth by the end of lap one and then scythed his way through to the lead on lap three, giving the crowd something to cheer about in the drizzly conditions. “The conditions were very tough at the start of the race,” said Buncombe. “When I took the lead the circuit was pretty dry at the start of the lap but still wet out the back so it was difficult to know how hard to push. Once I saw the Porsche I had taken the lead from start to close in on me I got my head down and worked on building up a ‘comfort’ gap. The car was feeling great at this stage and I could do all out qualifying pace on every lap so it was a lot of fun to drive.” The safety car made two appearances during the first half of the race while debris and then a stranded car were cleared from the track. Its appearance however did mean that the Nissan GT-R immediately lost its advantage. This meant that Jann would be pitted against most of the ‘pro’ drivers from the British GT field during his run. The driver change went smoothly and the team got Jann on track in the lead without losing any time. “For the first 10 minutes the car was great,” he said. “But then as the fuel level got lower I started to get understeer out on the GP circuit. Bob (Neville) was on the radio telling me what the gap was to the BMW in second place and then 10 minutes before the end he said there was an Aston Martin catching the BMW at quite a rate.” Suddenly the battle for all three podium places was on. The Aston Martin made fairly light work of the BMW so Jann was under immense pressure for the remaining three laps of the race. Jann is an incredibly calm driver and this served him well today. He kept his cool and crossed the line as winner in what can only be described as a photo finish. “Both drivers did a fantastic job today.” Said GT Academy Team RJN Team Principal Bob Neville. “Al took advantage of the wet conditions at the start and built up a useful lead which was then lost by two safety cars. Jann had to go wheel-to-wheel with the pros and he didn’t make a single mistake under huge pressure. It feels good to see him and the GT3 GT-R take their first major race wins.”

Amici wins Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo at Paul Ricard

Andrea Amici took a well-earned victory at the Blancpain Super Trofeo at the Paul Ricard circuit on June 30. Pole-sitter Amici led the field into the first corner, but the Italian had Cedric Leimer right behind him. The two leading cars stayed close to each other, but were able to pull away from the other competitors. At the same time Matteo Zucchi and Leonardo Geraci fought it out for third place. A round of pit stops saw the lead change hands several times, but Amici soon had his lead restored and maintained his position to the finishing line. “I am very, very pleased.” said Amici. “I must of course thank everyone at Autocarrozzeria Imperale for doing a great job. The race started well for me, I managed to open a good gap up, but after the stops, Enjalbert was very fast and I misread the gap a little bit, so I pushed harder and we managed to hold on for the win.”

Classic Racers Gear Up For ‘Mini-Britannia’ Tour Britannia’s one-day classic race and rally tour, Mini Britannia, was announced at Silverstone on June 27. Based at Silverstone, Mini Britannia will run on Saturday October 13, and will give regular competitors some late-season fun and new competitors the chance to sample this type of event. Like its big brother, Mini Britannia will include competition and regularity events and will run on asphalt roads. A race at Silverstone and a series of special stages in the Silverstone area will make up a full day of competition, both starting and finishing at Silverstone. Following the same format as Tour Britannia, crews in the competition event will tackle a series of asphalt special stages and a race at Silverstone, while the regularity competitors will follow the same route with straight forward average speed tests on the same stages and track. As there will be no road regularity sections, the category is simple to follow without tricky navigation or timekeeping. While regularity entrants are fully fledged competitors, competition licences are not necessary. “The first car will start from the BRDC Clubhouse at 9am and head north into Warwickshire,” said event director Alec Poole. “There will be stages at a stately home and a private test track before returning to Silverstone for another new stage. We will then use the International race circuit before venturing out on another loop for more special stages. When the event returns to Silverstone at the end of the afternoon, the prize-giving supper will be in the BRDC Clubhouse.” In keeping with the present financial climate, entry fees have been cut to a minimum with regularity costing £750 and competition £995, both including VAT. “We have planned a full day of action and may have to limit numbers to get everyone round the route before it gets dark,” said Poole. “It is an ideal opportunity for some action before winter sets in or, if you are interested in trying a race tour, it is a great chance to sample this type of event.” More details about Mini Britannia can be found at the event website: www.tourbritannia.com and entry forms can be downloaded from the site.

DeLorean Club UK

Good Turnout For DeLorean Club UK’s EuroTek 2012 Event The DeLorean Club UK met up at Caley Hall Hotel in Old Hunstanton, Norfolk, on June 28 - July 1, for their annual EuroTec event. The informal meeting attracted around 30 cars from all over the UK as well as visitors from across the Channel. Activities at EuroTec included road runs, technical workshops, general socialising and an 80s disco. The event has been held at the same location for the last seven years, and was even visited by Mike Brewer and Ed China from TV’s Wheeler Dealers programme a few years ago. However, next year EuroTec will be held at a different venue and the organisers are currently looking at a number of suitable locations. The road run on the Saturday afternoon headed out to nearby Brancaster Beach where the small collection of stainlesssteel cars attracted a crowd of curious onlookers all keen to find out more about the DeLoreans. www.deloreaneurotec.co.uk

Sporting Bears

Busy June For Sporting Bears The Sporting Bears Motor Club has had a busy few weeks which has seen the club offering ‘Dream Rides’ at both the Chomondeley Pageant of Power (CPoP) in Cheshire, and The Supercar Event at Dunsfold in Surrey. CPoP turned out to be a challenging event for the Bears, as heavy rain led to saturated ground that didn’t suit the ‘supercars’ that formed the main part of their display. In fact, conditions were so bad in one area of the site that a Lamborghini Countach belonging to one of the club’s members sank axle deep in mud and had to be pulled out by a tractor! Thankfully, things at Dunsfold were a little drier, and the Bears managed to keep their cars on the concrete for most of the event. As usual, Bentley Motors UK went the extra mile by supplying a Continental GT V8 for the show, while Max Weitzmann came along with his stunning Jaguar XJ220 to complete a truly stunning line-up of cars. Sadly, the club’s planned ‘Dream Rides’ extravaganza at the Kimbolton Classic Car Show on July 15, has had to be cancelled as the organisers decided that the saturated ground wouldn’t cope with several hundred cars driving on it, along with lots of visitors on foot. T

here are many established car shows held around the British Isles each year, some of which can trace their histories back 30 years or more, but one of the newer events is the Chomondeley Pagent of Power. Now in its fifth year, CPoP has rapidly established itself as one of the premier events on the automotive calendar and attracts visitors from all over the world to see some very impressive machinery. Of course, as its name suggests, this show isn’t just about cars; it also caters for boats, planes, helicopters and even tanks, so if it’s loud, fast or just has 18 www.cprmag.com

Stunning Venue Set in the beautiful grounds of Chomondeley Castle in Cheshire, the venue is a little off the beaten track, especially if you are travelling from 20 www.cprmag.com

the south of the country. It takes about 35 minutes to reach the grounds from the M6 and the winding, single carriageway country lanes that lead there are picturesque, but at the same time tedious if you are stuck behind slow moving traffic. Still, at least it’s easy to find - just leave

the M6 at Crewe and then just follow the numerous Aston Martins, Austin Healeys and Porsches and you’ll reach your destination before you know it. The event is split into several different areas which feature either live action or static displays. There is the horseshoe shaped track, which picks its way through the 5,000 acres that make up the castle grounds, and this forms the centrepiece of the show, while the adjacent lake plays host to various aquatic machinery from jet-skis to high speed inflatable ‘ribs.’ The ‘off-road’ crowd have their own ‘quagmire’ to play in which is also shared by the various tanks and military vehicles which offer passenger rides for a small fee, and the skies above the event are filled with a variety of helicopters and aerobatic aircraft ranging

Mud...Glorious Mud! The first thing you’ll notice on arrival at the pageant is that the site is huge and the surrounding parking areas are large grass fields. The second thing to become immediately apparent is that if the ground is wet, you will need wellies. I’m not kidding. We’re talking essential equipment here! If you have ever been to the Glastonbury Festival when it has rained, you’ll know what I mean. Large areas of the saturated grass in the car parks had already been churned into thick, gooey mud by the time I arrived on the Saturday morning. It was so bad in places that even a driver in a 4x4 would think twice about attempting to cross it, yet I was impressed at how the CPoP staff managed to scatter vast amounts of straw and

This 1926 Vauxhall OEType 30/98 Velox Tourer is usually displayed at the Vauxhall Heritage Centre in Luton. sawdust on the ground to make it more useable. This event has been blighted by rain on four years in its five year history, and in a desperate attempt to ‘find’ some good weather, the organisers moved this year’s show from its traditional July slot to one in the middle of June. Statistically, the June dates should offer better weather, but as the organisers found out, you can’t always rely on statistics. Maybe CPoP is just destined to be one of those wet weather events.

Difficult Conditions This year also saw an extra day added to the pageant for the first time, so the event officially kicked off on the Friday. As it turned out, torrential rain fell almost constantly during the opening day, but many cars still managed to get out on the track. Unfortunately, the treacherous conditions on the track caused several cars to lose control as they flew along ‘Chestnut Avenue,’ resulting in some severely mangled

bodywork, but thankfully no serious injuries. The weather on Saturday wasn’t much better with steady rain falling for most of the day, but at least it gave me a chance to explore

the tented pit area where a staggering collection of cars was assembled.

Ex-Paddy Hopkirk Mini Cooper S. war aero-engined machines which seemed to dwarf all the other cars at the show. Among these cars was the mighty ‘Brutus’ special, which is owned by the Sinsheim Museum in Germany. The car 24 www.cprmag.com

was recently featured on the Top Gear TV programme, but it looks and sounds even more impressive ‘in the flesh.’ Its 46.5-litre V12 BMW engine is the same type that was used to power the Luftwaffe’s

Heinkel He.111 bombers in World War Two and it makes an incredible racket as it starts up, covering any bystanders in oil and smoke. Sitting next to ‘Brutus’ was a small collection of cars owned by Chris Williams. While the German machine looked used but well cared for, Chris’ cars were notable for their seasoned patina. No polish or chrome on these cars - just a quick wipe down with a damp cloth is all that’s required to maintain that perfect original look. Take the bright red 1929 24-litre Napier Bentley for example. It has visible cracks in its aluminium radiator shroud and paint has worn away from the rivet heads and screws. The cockpit shows more ‘character’ where dozens of aging scrutineering stickers litter the side wall,


while the unpainted metal dashboard displays labels unceremoniously written on in black marker pen. I like Chris’ no-nonsense attitude to his cars. Mechanically they are well cared for; they are used frequently and not tucked away in some dusty museum, but as for the polishing and preening, he leaves that to other owners. As well as the Napier, Chris also had his awesome 1930 Packard Bentley ‘Mavis’ at the show. The car is powered by a huge 42-litre Packard engine and its matt-black finish gives it a very menacing appearance. The car has a neat party trick too; it shoots columns of flame from its exhaust stacks which certainly helped lift the mood and dry out some of the rain soaked visitors.

Flame Throwing! There seemed to be a certain amount of friendly rivalry between Chris and the chaps from the Sinsheim Museum, with the British owner dismissing ‘Brutus’ as being decidedly second rate in the ‘flame-throwing’ stakes. No doubt fuelled by several glasses of Chardonnay in the bar on Saturday night, the teams headed to the pits for a midnight ‘flame fest.’ Spurred on by cheering spectators, the cocktail of deafening noise and red hot flame filled the night air and reverberated off the castle walls. the winner? I think for the sake of AngloGerman relations it was called a draw, but if I wanted to barbecue a sausage, I’d use ‘Mavis’! Still, fire-breathing monsters are all very well, but with the amount of rain falling over the weekend, an amphibious

off to a flying start followed closely by the wonderful collection of original AC Cobras. Each of the laps was timed and the results called out some visitors could keep track of which car was fastest, but if I’m honest, I don’t think anybody really cared. Well, apart from the drivers, who no doubt had a certain amount of personal pride at stake. No, the spectators seemed content just to see the cars flashing past just a few feet away, and thanks to the short nature of the Chomondeley track, there was rarely less that a minute between each car making their runs. but the dirt covering the Bears’ cars was testament to the amount of fund-raising they had been taking part in. In fact, one particular Lamborghini Countach was unfortunate enough to sink axle deep in mud on the Friday and had to be pulled out of the muddy hole by tractor. I’m sure that suppliers of car cleaning products in the North West must have done good business the following week.

you’ll probably laugh, but in the performance department at least, this beasty is no slouch. Its 6.2 litre engine is the same unit as fitted to the Chevrolet Corvette and punches out 425hp. Its 0-60mph time of 5.0 seconds flat will also embarrass quite a few so-called ‘supercars’ so while it might not look pretty, it would be a brave man to line up against one of these at the traffic lights!

low-slung two-seater sports car from the Luton-based factory; it is in fact a ‘pick-up’ truck, or a ‘Ute’ as it’s known in its native Australia. Okay, park it next to the exquisite Aston One-77 and

The Aston Martin One-77 also looked and sounded incredible, but I’m not sure that the Chomondeley mud did much to help its aesthetics. The One-77 was the result of the manufacturer’s quest to build the ‘ultimate Aston Martin’ and the attention to detail is just staggering, with even the engine bay finished to the same high standard as the exterior. In fact, Aston Martin says that every area of the car, whether visible or not, was finished as an ‘A-surface’ and that as much thought went


into the appearance of the car’s underside as it did the bodywork. One marque of car that featured strongly at CPoP was the iconic AC Cobra. With the car celebrating its 50th anniversary, it was pleasing to see ten genuine AC Cobras from the 1960s taking to the track during the weekend, although the priceless cars were (mostly!) driving rather more sedately than some of the race cars. Perhaps my favourite was Bill Bridge’s bright yellow Shelby Cobra 289, as it was this car that most closely resembled the SCCA championship cars from the 1960s. The Cobra parade was also particularly poignant as the car’s creator Carroll Shelby had died just a few weeks before.

Wet...But Good!

Apart from the weather, the 2012 Chomondeley Pageant of Power was a very enjoyable event which offered visitors enough variety to keep even the most demanding individuals amused. My only real criticism is that the show areas and attractions do seem to be spread around the site which means you have to cover a lot of ground if you want to see it all. It does give the event a spacious feel, but if it’s raining, the last thing you want to do is lots of walking, and even my trust umbrella wasn’t enough to prevent me from getting soaked on the Saturday. However, if you want to see some very rare, historic cars in action on the track, then CPoP will put you closer to that action than just about any other event going, and surely that is worth getting wet for.

David Harrison reports from Circuit De La Sarthe. had withdrawn completely from top level endurance racing. Unless one of the other teams could step up to the plate, it seemed that Le Mans 2012 would be a one horse race...and that horse was called ‘Audi.’ This year also saw yet more ‘game-shifting’ technology introduced which would ultimately play a part in

deciding not only the winner of the race, but also the future of endurance racing as a sport. Yes, we have had new innovations incorporated into the cars before, such as TFSI Direct Injection, TDi Diesel and ultra-light construction, but now you can add ‘hybriddrive’ systems to the list of qualities that a car must have to be a success. high as the cars lined up on the grid. As the last notes of the French national anthem echoed around the historic stands, the lead Audi on pole position fired up its engine and glided effortlessly away for the formation lap prior to the rolling start. The next time around, the

French ‘Tricolour’ dropped and the race was on. The lead cars started to pull away from the pack early on, and the Toyota machines looked to be filling Peugeot’s shoes quite nicely as they kept pace with the silver Audis. The first few laps for the German team didn’t go quite as planned,


with Alan McNish running off the track and collecting debris which forced an early return to the pits, while later on, Romain Dumas in the No3 Audi under-steered into a tyre wall, smashing the forward bodywork and breaking the front right suspension. It looked like it would be an

early retirement, but Dumas leapt out of the car and frantically proceeded to rip the mangled bodywork off the car in front of the bemused marshals. He managed to get the car back on track and returned to the pits with one front wheel barely hanging on. The Audi crew managed to

eventually repair the car, but it had dropped too many laps to be in with a chance of a podium finish.

firey ferrari One of the most spectacular incidents involving a GT car was when the front left-hand wheel of No61 car - Corse Ferrari 458 - caught fire on approach to the pit straight. At one point the whole front quarter of the car appeared to be engulfed in flames, yet thanks to the quick reactions of the marshals, the fire was extinguished before it destroyed the car. Amazingly, the Ferrari was recovered to the garage, and despite what appeared to be extensive damage, it later emerged back onto the track to continue the race.

It’s a great result that Audi is now the first brand to have achieved victory with a hybrid vehicle - and right on the first run, as before with the two other technologies, and - what’s more - with both R18 e-Tron Quattro cars on the two top spots. an outstanding achievement by the entire squad.” Ralf Jüttner - Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest - summed it up perfectly, saying: “What a race! It was a hot battle right at the beginning, as Toyota was a much tougher rival than many had been expecting. It’s a shame that both of their cars retired so early, and Anthony Davidson’s vehicle with a

LMP2 cars for position. today and who probably contested his last Le Mans race - although that’s what we’ve been thinking for the past five years! But not only the showing of the two hybrid vehicles was impressive. Our rookies Marco (Bonanomi) and Oliver (Jarvis) in the Audi R18 ultra together with ‘Rocky’ (Mike Rockenfeller) delivered a compelling race that caused them to finish in third place. They had to experience the fact that Le Mans has its own laws but they commandingly mastered this challenge. Our number ‘3’ car had two 40 www.cprmag.com

accidents that were almost identical and unfortunately frustrated their race for the podium even though they were running fast. All in all, we’re very happy. All four car crews did an outstanding job.” The drivers were obviously ecstatic too, with race winner André Lotterer saying: “The new Audi R18 e-Tron Quattro is very strong and gave us a lot of confidence. It’s brilliant to have won yet again! A year ago, we were battling against Peugeot and this year against Toyota at the beginning of the race. Unfortunately, our rival

retired, but we contested a very fierce race against car number ‘2’ in our team as well. Audi Sport allowed all of us to give everything. This year, the trust among the entire squad has grown even further. Competing with Audi continues to be very special.” It might not have had the excitement of the 2011 race, but this year’s Le Mans 24 Hour was still a very enjoyable spectacle. Audi has thrown down the gauntlet for 2013, so it will be interesting to see if anyone can get near them. My tip? Just watch Toyota!

In The Pink On Tour Britannia Battling the UK elements in Britain’s leading classic road rally, chasing stage times of some of the UK’s top drivers and dragging a British Rally Champion out of a twelve year retirement. British Sports car racer Sarah Bennett-Baggs tells us how she got on tackling the Tour Britannia.

F

ollowing on from my epic adventure in 2011 driving 3,000km across Mexico for La Carrera Pan Americana, I have renewed enthusiasm for road rallying as a break from circuit racing. As a result, I set about preparing my 1978 Porsche 911 SC for the 2.5 day event known as the Tour Britannia; the UK’s answer to La Carrera Pan Americana, the Tour de France or the Mille Miglia. 42 www.cprmag.com

Well sort of… Actually the Tour Britannia is nothing like any of those; it is easy to enter, there are no hoops to jump through, safety standards are high, rules are fair and the briefings are in English! Not too many modifications were needed to the racecar as we were told the terrain

would be mostly tarmac, so we left the ride height alone. We had to put the racecar through an MOT, tax it, insure it, we bolted in a passenger seat and harness and fitted a trip meter and intercom. Oh, and


a footrest for the passenger to brace against when the driver hits the brakes. My co-driver for the race was easy to find, long time friend and team manager of Butler

Motorsport Terry Wilson. I have always enjoyed racing with Terry and his team, they know their stuff and bring out the best in a driver. Terry himself is no stranger to rallying he enjoyed a glittering

career in the 80’s and 90’s collecting many a trophy in some world class events, the pinnacle being two top five finishes in the Network Q RAC World Championships. His last event was in 2000, competing in the North Wales rally in a Sierra 4x4 where he won outright. We met up at Terry’s July 2012 43

Rudding Park Hotel. workshop on the Tuesday where we made some final preparations to the car, mainly sorting out seat positions since Terry is 6ft 5in and we had to put the seat on sliders to ensure we could quickly swap drivers. There is plenty of banter between us, yet I know he is feeling a bit nervous as we pour over the route maps and road book late into the night.

Rudding Park Hotel was our base for the event. We have a two man support crew and chase car for the three day event, they follow us around all the stages with the spares, tools and anything we might need. On arrival at Rudding Park we had a very simple registration process to follow, no major hurdles to jump or FIA papers to produce. It was simple; sticker up, go through scruntineering and driver signon. Simples! It was also our first chance to meet some of the other competitors and make some

new friends, I saw various familiar faces in the Paddock including British GT Champion Phil Hindley in a beautifully presented 911 SC, ex-fellow GT Cup racer Stuart Scott in a fabulous Chevrolet Camaro and early 70’s Grand Prix driver Ian Ashley competing with Mike Smith in a stunning Martini colours Porsche 3.0 RSR. We parked up alongside the blue Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 of Robert Hartley.

Two Rallies

The drivers briefing was brief, which was in keeping with the calm, and refreshingly relaxed, albeit professional organising style of the Tour Britannia crew. We picked up our time cards for the trip and headed off for the first stage of the event through the Rudding Park Hotel grounds. This was the 8th Tour Britannia event, which cleverly combines two rallies simultaneously;

There is also a Targa category open to any modern sports, race or saloon car post ‘75. The car still needs to comply with MSA Roger Kilty and Lynette Banks in their beautifully prepared Ford Escort.

Scary Stuff!

We were warned the short Rudding Park stage was extremely slippery. Terry and I decided to drive one each, I went first, I pulled up at the gate waited for the

count down and wheel-spun off up the driveway. The short course was narrow and slippy with a change of surface as we reached some newly laid tarmac. The very fine, loose, freshly-laid gravel gave no grip, but did give huge amounts of oversteer. We charge through huge great Rhododendron bushes, narrowly avoiding making contact with the trees dotted along the course and I complete my first ever rally stage. In summary, it was scary, sideways, complete with handfuls of lock and a few swearwords! On the second run I am grateful to be sitting in the passenger seat. Terry takes the wheel, I can feel he’s nervous. This time we both know what’s coming but only I know how slippery it is. We are told at the start gate there is a car in the ditch somewhere along the course and to take it easy. July 2012 45

As we take off from the gate, Terry kicks into action making precise and rapid steering inputs to control the flailing, pink, tail-happy rear end, which today appears to have a mind of its own. I am in awe of Terry’s ability to make my Barbie doll pink Porsche dance gracefully through the Rhododendron’s. I feel like Nicky Grist siting alongside Juha Kankkunen calling the corners through a purple forest...“easy right, 90 left…” We narrowly miss a large tree as Terry power slides his way out of the final bend. Joy To Watch Day 2 - Thursday our start time was a gentle 8.30am and

Terry did all the meticulous navigator tasks of setting our road clock to the exact second of the official Rally Time, and checking the routes as we set off for the first stage located in the grounds of Newark Showground. The course was a tricky one with narrow walk ways and lots of hairpins as we drove up and down the show ground arena. It was perfect however for Terry, grinning like an ape, to show off his car control as he power slides the Porsche round the course with no major effort. My run involved much grunting and heaving, as I have to get physical to man handle the car round such a tight course. Saving my energy for the race

By mid morning we pulled in to Croft for a 20 minute race and we had a 15 minute practice session that decided grid positions. Then a normal race count down and off we went. The windscreen wipers had packed up earlier in the day, and just as the race started, so did the rain! I had a brand new set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cups on the car (not ideal rain tyres) but I decide to work them hard to see if I can get some heat and grip in them. But as the rain fell harder I found myself

struggling to keep the Porsche pointing in the right direction, I forget how many times I got sideways or span in the end it was not a good day at the office!

Head Spin! After Croft it was on to Raby Castle for lunch followed by a fabulous stage through the castle grounds. This stage featured tricky, narrow roads with long, wet grass either side. On one of the runs, Terry got the back end slightly loose on the grass and that was it; we were off, spinning backwards downhill. My head was busy, frantically rotating, trying to navigate where the trees were and which way was up. Meanwhile Terry was busy trying to gather up the reins and regain control. We both succeeded in our quest; just as Terry regained drive I

started navigating to get us back on course.

Stone Walls & Sheep After Raby Castle we headed off to Aske Hall, and this stage had many more hazards. For example, four wet cattle grids flanked by stone walls, large boulder lined roads and herds of sheep. A rather more

cautious approach was taken here given the wet conditions. We ended the day back at Newark showground to do the morning’s course in reverse. More power sliding fun for the wonder kid Wilson before we headed back to Rudding Park for a clean up and a wellearned beer! By the end of day two we were up into 10th July 2012 49

Going over the mountain the Porsche got a big wheel spin every lap as I crested, landing slightly sideways each lap. I was really careful not to lock up in the race, and only got caught out once when it spun round so fast. But I had already selected first gear, and was looking to rejoin even before the car had come to a stop! I actually really enjoyed the race in the end; it was a real challenge against the conditions. The final stages of the day were at Newark Air Museum where we stopped for lunch, followed by a stage on the show ground before a transit to Blyton Park where Terry and I did a lap each of the circuit to compare rally and race styles for some fun. The last stage of the day was back to Harewood Hill climb, this time to speed up the hill. On this amazing, narrow, twisty hill-climb, Terry

gave it everything for a final banzai trip. In the first run we caught up with the Mustang of Mike Thorne who was limping home from his run and Terry took to the grass in a dramatic overtake much to the spectators delight.

Tour Completed Well, we made it to the end and with a respectable finish - 8th overall and 4th in class. Phil Hindley and Andy Bull took the honors finishing the competition 1st in class, behind them 1996 British Sprint Champion Roger Kilty and Lynette Banks in their beautifully prepared Ford Escort RS1600. Third place went to Stuart Scott and Steven Wood in their Chevy Camaro. Melissa Raven and Jeremy Haylock won the Regularity Class in their Porsche 911S and Richard Meaden and Nathan Blewer won the Targa Class in a road legal Radical.

Supercar Event Now in its fifth year, The Supercar Event gives the general public a chance to ride is some of the fastest production cars ever built while raising money for The Children’s Trust charity. Simon Hazeldine went along to catch the action.

upercar owners generally get a bad rap from the Great British public. They are seen as rich playboys, swanning around in expensive cars with little thought or consideration for the rest of us

mere mortals. Thankfully, that preconception couldn’t be further from the truth in most cases, and some owners are quite prepared to use their cars to raise much needed money for charitable causes.

One group that does this is the Sporting Bears Motor Club, which this magazine is very proud to support, and the organisers of ‘The Supercar Event,’ held at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey, are another.


One of the rarest supercars in the UK - the Koenigsegg Agera. The Supercar Event is now in its fifth season, although prior to this year, it was called the ‘Dad’s Day Out’ and each year has seen the event grow both in size and stature. The whole thing

is based around a fairly simple idea. Get owners of very fast, powerful and exotic ‘supercars’ to turn up at Dunfold where visitors can pay a nominal amount for a passenger ride around the

track in a car of their choice. The money raised would go to support the excellent work done by The Children’s Trust charity which provides care, education, therapy and rehabilitation to

Stig’s Playground Of course, Dunsfold isn’t just any old track; it is the home of BBC’s Top Gear programme and the circuit used by the ‘supercars’ is more or less the same one that is regularly featured in the TV show. This means that visitors not only get to ride in some pretty impressive cars, they also get to experience a few ‘hot laps’ on ‘The Stig’s’ playground. The event is held over two days and is a fairly relaxed affair, however just driving down to the show can be an experience. Once through the Surrey town of Guildford, it isn’t long before you start seeing various wedgeshaped cars whizzing around the leafy Surry lanes. The forecourt

Good Value Public entry to the event is good value at just £10.00 per head for each day, or £15.00 for a weekend ticket. That’s not a bad deal, especially when you consider the value of cars on show and the sheer number of them. Spectator numbers are limited though, with a maximum of 10,000 visitors permitted on each of the two days, so buying advance tickets is a must if you don’t want to miss out. I chose to drive down to the event on the Saturday and I

While the glittering selection of Ferraris and Lamborghinis was impressive, it was a British car that seemed to be stealing all the limelight from its Italian counterparts. Max Weitzmann had brought along his awesome

Dream List The main part of the event was centred around a huge ‘paddock’ area where just about every type of ‘supercar’ you could possibly

Before long, queues started to build up along the paddock fence where visitors waited in turn to get a ride in their ‘dream car.’ Tickets were sold in a nearby marquee, and there was a choice between a ‘pot luck’ ticket an £25.00 which entitled the holder to a ride in the next available car, or £50.00 for the ‘Fast Track’ option where visitors could choose the actual car they wanted to ride in. Some of the ‘hypercars’ such as the Zonda, Enzo and Koenigsegg were individually priced, but typically around £75.00 for three laps of the circuit.

Crowd Control As I mentioned earlier, the format for the event is a simple one, but there is one major drawback. When you have several thousand visitors coming through the gate and only a couple of hundred

With the event relying solely on the goodwill of volunteers who are not trained in event management or crowd control, things can quickly start

to get out of hand, and it’s a credit to the organisers that they managed to just about keep everything running as smoothly as possible. You will always get one or two people who turn up, pay their money and then get irate if they have to wait more

than ten minutes, or ‘me-me-me syndrome’ as I like to call it, but generally the majority of the visitors patiently waited their turn. There were a few problems when one or two of the cars became unserviceable leaving some people disappointed, and then later on when the Zonda and a few other supercars headed for the exit before all the ticket holders had their rides. I later found out that the organisers had been promised two Bugatti Veyrons, and two other Zondas, but all had dropped out at the last minute. The Zonda that was there, along with some of the other ‘hypercars’, wasn’t scheduled to be, and only came as a favour to the organiser, but had to leave

Spins & Tyre Smoke! The ‘supercars’ might have been the main draw at Dunsfold, but there were other attractions there too. The most visible one was the Caterham rides area which gave visitors a chance to book an appointment with their chiropractor, thanks to some impressively enthusiastic driving.

The cars went blasting up the track before screeching to a halt, burning rubber with a series of ‘doughnuts’ and then back down through the slalom course before more pirouettes on a section of wet track. The end result was lots of big grins from all the passengers, so that one certainly ticked all the boxes.

Elsewhere, there were trade stalls, a live band, bouncy castles for the kids, fire engine rides, skid control training, hovercraft rides and even please flights in a helicopter, so there was certainly no shortage of things to do at The Supercar Event. As for the weather, well I can’t really comment on the Sunday as I wasn’t there (although I heard

That little downpour didn’t stop the track action, but it was interesting to see the super fast cars tip-toeing around the wet circuit trying not to spin off into the weeds. One or two drivers gave their passengers a little more than they bargained for, as I saw a Porsche 911 and a Ferrari 430 spin off the track into the long grass. The Stig would have been proud!

Gratifying I finished the day as I started by hanging out with the ‘Bears’ over in their corner of the park. It is always gratifying to see passengers climbing out of the cars after a 20 minute run, which a huge grin on their face. Yes, it helps raise money for very deserving charities, but it also helps promote performance cars to the general public, showing

Max Walker from the Sporting Bears was - as usual - working flat out all day and I just don’t know where he gets his energy from. Speaking after the event, he told me: “The event was a massive success for the Bears, and we added £2,335.00 to the donations and helped keep the

A dazzling collection of classic, kit and sports cars set off from the ancestral home of British motorsport at Brooklands in Surrey on June 10, for the 24th London to Brighton Classic Car Run. Simon Hazeldine reports.

Y

ou just have to love the London to Brighton Run. Best known for its ancient cars dating back to the late 1800s, some powered by steam, all leaking castor oil and more than a few breakingdown somewhere along the A23 before they get anywhere near Brighton. Of course, that particular event is the famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run which has been staged since 1896 and is open only to cars built before 1905. It has become something of a British institution, but since it caters only for the very earliest machines, it is also a rather exclusive affair. Got a Ferrari 250 California Spyder? Sorry, your car isn’t eligible...even if it

Classics line up at the start of the run. is worth £5 million. Thankfully though, there is an alternative event which caters for classic, sports and kit cars and it’s open to just about anybody with an interesting vehicle. It is in fact two events

run simultaneously, namely the ‘London to Brighton Classic Car Run,’ which is now in its 24th year, and the ‘London to Brighton Kit & Sports Car Run’ which was first staged in 2000. Unlike the veteran car run July 2012 79

which sets off from Hyde Park in the centre of London, the classic, kit and sports run starts from ancestral home of British motorsport at Brooklands in Surrey. It’s a fantastic location. Its historic buildings and wonderful museum just have to be seen, and you just cant beat the feeling of walking out onto that famous curved banking where you can almost feel the 80 www.cprmag.com

history coming up through your feet.

Early Start With the first cars due to set off at 7am, most of the participants wisely booked hotel rooms nearby so they were ready for the early start. I, on the other hand, decided to drive down on the day and an early start saw me heading round an almost

deserted M25 trying to avoid the recently installed speed cameras that seem to have sprung up all over the place. As I arrived at Brooklands, the first cars were already leaving and heading off in a southerly direction towards Brighton; a Jaguar, a Cobra and a TVR trundled past and I was now feeling guilty for turning up in a Mondeo. I tried to convince the guy on the gate that it was in fact a cleverly disguised Ferrari Daytona, but he was having none of it and directed me towards the public car park. Despite the early hour, the Brooklands paddock was a hive of activity with cars of all ages arriving and departing. The cars taking part in the ‘classic’ run were assembled in the main paddock adjacent to the historic Brooklands club house, while the kit and sports cars were parked

Each of the two runs had their own booking-in office where the owners collected rally plates and were presented with a rather stylish solid brass rally plaque. The drivers were also given a pack containing details of the route, along with information on designated stopping points and a voucher for a fish & chips luncheon on arrival in Brighton.

Two Separate Runs The cars on each run had their own separate starting lines; the classics were waved off from the paddock gate in front of the club house, while the kit and sports cars set off from a point under the nose of the iconic Concorde airliner which now resides at Brooklands. Each of the runs would follow its own

separate route, which would generally avoid motorways and dual-carriageways in favour of leafy country lanes and attractive villages where time seems to have stood still. The kit and sports car run left Brooklands and threaded its way out beyond the M25 and followed a route deep into the

Surrey countryside. It then headed in an easterly direction passing close to the towns of Dorking and Reigate before crossing the border into Kent where the cars would make their first stop at Chiddingstone Castle near Tunbridge Wells. After a brief stop, the cars set off again, this time heading July 2012 81

cars until it hit Cobham, and then headed briefly east before snaking its way south through some beautiful landscape. After about 20 miles, the run made its way up Leith Hill, the highest point in South East England at 965ft above sea level, and if any

of the drivers were worrying about overheating engines, at least they knew that most of the run would be downhill from there. Picking up the A29, the cars made their way to the interestingly named Newdigate

This led to the planned stop at Borde Hill Garden where the cars were given VIP parking in front of the impressive house and the drivers could exchange a voucher for a

Julian Ripper’s 1965 Ford Mustang. tea or coffee and a slice of cake. Suitably refreshed, the cars set off from Borde Hill and headed south through Anstey and on to Ditchling Beacon where the route crossed that of the kit and sports cars. The route eventually led to the A23 and a

straight run down into the centre of Brighton before finishing at the roundabout opposite the town’s famous pier. A left turn took the cars onto Madeira Drive, famous for its arch-lined covered walkways which provided a great backdrop for the finishing line. July 2012 83

First Arrivals The first cars arrived in Brighton just before 11am and it wasn’t long before a steady stream of vehicles queued up to cross the finishing line. The local council had kindly agreed to close off Madeira Drive for the whole day so that the cars could be parked along the sea front and spectators could wander among them without having to worry about traffic. As each car arrived in Brighton, it was positioned on the finishing line for the obligatory photographs of the car and crew before stopping momentarily so that event commentator Keith Barry could give a brief description of the car and chat to the owner. I must give credit to Keith who provided a knowledgeable and entertaining commentary throughout the whole event. Even the steady rain which fell during the latter half of the afternoon failed to dampen his enthusiasm. With the photos and other formalities out of the way, each car was

The original idea was to have all the kit and sports cars on the inland side of the road, while all the classics were nearest the beach, but after a while it seemed like the drivers were parking where ever they could find a space.

If it’s too much hassle putting the roof up, just use an umbrella! Whether you like Italian exotica like the Ferraris, or the V8 roar from the Cobras, or maybe even the little Minis and Fiat 500s, they were all there. Mix in some Caterhams, Rolls Royce, Triumphs, MGs, Jaguars, Austin Healeys and Aston Martins, and you have a very respectable car show, which the people of Brighton got to see for free. One car that caught my eye was James Beard’s Dodge Charger. The huge 7.2 litre V8 lurking under that enormous bonnet

sounded incredible as it paired up with a Ford Mustang for a brief ‘drag’ run down a closed section of Madeira Drive. If the car didn’t win a prize for its superb condition, it’s owner at least deserved an award for consuming the most fuel on the journey down to Brighton! Another notable classic was the Jaguar V12 E-Type owned by Mark Cooper. The owner also had another of his cars on the run - a rare Triumph TR8 Drophead - but it was the Jaguar

Flying the flag...and the bears! that seemed to be getting the most attention, probably due to its unusual Lavender paintwork. Some of the cars on display had interesting histories too. A black MGA 1600 owned by Simon Toyne was once photographed with Marilyn Monroe, while the oldest car taking part - a 1929 Austin Seven ‘Chummy’ was once owned by Irish singing group The Bachelors, and owner Brian Cunningham has the signatures in the log book to prove it. Unfortunately for Brian,

the little Austin broke down about ten miles from Brighton and had to finish the run on the back of a low-loader, but in keeping with the spirit of the event, the car was unloaded at Brighton and pushed across the finishing line to cheers from the on-looking spectators. One of the most popular marques on the run was Triumph, with nearly every one of its TR sports car range represented with the exception of the TR7. There were also

One of the Triumph cars - Jonathan Smith’s 1962 TR4 - was also taking part in a 1,000 mile tour from Liverpool to the South Coast to mark the car’s 50th birthday. Over on the kit and sports car side there was lots of interesting machinery too. Kevin Llewellyn’s beautiful replica of a 1956 Ferrari 860 Monza was built from a kit made by Kougar in 1981, but still looks as good as July 2012 87

Brighton were a number of Lotus Seven inspired machines, including Simon Turtle’s attractive black and yellow Westfield Sei FW which was built over a six month period in 2011, and Gwyn Newitt’s Birkin S3 which was making its 11th appearance at the London to Brighton Run. Cobras & More! As usual there was a great selection of Cobra replicas taking part in the event and 88 www.cprmag.com

one of them was driven by Jon Freeman, Director at kit manufacturer AK Sportscars in Peterborough. Jon had brought along the company’s demonstrator which took the form of a very attractive Cobra, finished in white with black racing stripes. The car was also fitted with a stylish hardtop, which proved to be a very useful addition when it started raining, and it had a 6.2 litre V8 squeezed inside that shapely bodywork. Among the other kit cars at

Performance Machines There didn’t seem to be many ‘performance’ cars taking part in the run, but among those that had made the effort were some very desirable machines. Trevor Smith brought his concours prize winning 2007 Porsche Cayman S, while Simon Redhead turned up in his Ferrari 348TS which he had recently restored himself. Other cars in the class included a TVR Chimaera, a Jaguar XKR, a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette, and a TVR Tasmin 280i which had been restored by owner Norman Bland in 2009/10. The latter car made an incredible noise, which is hardly surprising as the owner told me that it is fitted with a


straight-through, stainless-steel exhaust system with a silencer the size of a baked-bean can. It sounded great at Brighton, but I hope Norman has understanding neighbours!

Naked! Among other things, Brighton is known for its colourful population and liberal attitudes, but some of the drivers taking part in the run got a little more than they bargained for as they arrived in the town. A local group of naturists had organised a ‘Naked Bike Ride’ and it wasn’t long before reports were coming in that some of the drivers had seen the unclothed cyclists as they made their way towards the sea front. The cyclists attempted to make their way along Madeira Drive and through the middle of the car show, but the local Police turned them away and told them to find another route.

Minor Problems Despite the best attempts of the British weather, the run seemed to be a big hit with all those taking part. When I spoke to organiser Stephen Smith from Greenwood Exhibitions he told me that he had received a lot of positive feedback after the event, and one driver who had taken part in nearly every London to Brighton Run for the past 24 years said it was the best one yet. Of course, no event is without its problems and on the kit and sports car route there was a small error in the route guide which would have sent the cars the wrong way. Thankfully, the mistake was spotted by most of the crews, and since it was near Chiddingstone Castle which was clearly sign-posted anyway,

it didn’t cause any serious problems. Stephen was still understandably annoyed and apologetic, especially as he had paid a third party of drive the route and check the directions, but ultimately it just added to the overall adventure. If you haven’t taken part in the London to Brighton Run before, make sure you don’t miss

next year’s run. The chance to glide effortlessly through the picturesque villages that populate southern-England while local residents cheerfully wave at the passing cars, is one not to be missed. Next year, I’m told, the sun will definitely shine, so bring the factor 30 and I’ll see you down on the south coast for some fish & chips! July 2012 89

RM Auctions generated more than $9.88 million in sales, with all lots sold at its Dingman Collection 2012 auction in New Hampshire. Characterized by a superb assortment of Americana, the Dingman Collection represented many years of careful and meticulous acquisition by prominent businessman, investor, and philanthropist, Michael Dingman, a former Ford Motor Company Director for over 21 years. In total, the sale lifted the gavel on nearly 50 cars and more than 1,000 automotive signs and collectibles (offered in 845 individual lots) before a packed house, with those in the room joined by a large volume of bidders on the phone and over the Internet. The auction attracted strong global interest, with bidders hailing from 34 states across the US, as well as Europe, South America, and the Middle East. “We are delighted with the results from the sale,” said Mike Fairbairn, Co-Founder, of RM Auctions. “The Dingman Collection was without question, one of 92 www.cprmag.com

Imagine being part of a team that has to race solidly for 24 hours! Now that’s a serious test of endurance. This film tells the story of just such a race. It’s not quite as well known as the world famous Le Mans 24 Hour, but it is just as testing and puts huge demands the teams and drivers. It recounts the efforts of the BMW team as it faces its big challenge yet: winning the 24 Hours on the Nürburgring - Nordschleife 2011. the event is described as the “toughest racing event in the world” which takes place at the notorious Nürburgring in Germany, also known affectionately as “Green Hell,” thanks to its leafy surroundings. If you are a fan or any kind of motorsport, this film will appeal to you. This isn’t some low budget flick filmed on a couple of second-rate camcorders; no, this is a lavish production that surpasses even the live TV coverage of Formula1. The BMW team had cameras everywhere during the 24 Hour race. There are multiple cameras inside the car which capture all the track action, and you almost feel like a member of the pit crew as the cameraman pushes his way to the front and the mechanics seem to scurry around him to get the job done. It must have felt quite invasive for the team at the time, but the end result is quite remarkable. One of the slogans used to promote the film - “Closer than ever before” - pretty much sums it up, so if you want to know what hardcore endurance racing is all about, make sure you check out this film. Now if only someone would make a film like this about Le Mans.
