N O I T I D E Y L L A R D A RO TARGA TROPHY San Diego Event #1
Saturday May 7th, 2011 8:45am- Pulling into the parking lot at Symbolic Motors Service center in San Diego, CA I am greeted with a beautiful sight, rows of Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Aston Martins. In the next hour over 110 cars will file into the lot and prepare for the season opener of Targa Trophy 2011. Last MotorOctober we chased the boys from HG Motor sports running their Mercedes CLK Black in a BMW 335d through the desert surrounding Las Vegas in the finally of the 2010 Targa Trophy Triple Crown Series. We had a blast in the chase but this year we wanted to be in the hunt to win for ourselves. For 2011 Targa Trophy is starting off the season with a trio of experience events which are essentially shortened versions of the traditional full day events. The route we are covering is over 100 miles and as always the route has some great ribbons of tarmac for spirited driving.
In planning we decided we needed a car that was quick, handled well, and would not draw to much attention from the law. We rang up VF Engineering to see if we could pilot one of their blown BMW M3s, thinking we would end up in their sleeper Stage 2 E46 M3. We ended up in something a little more insane. The "Green M3" as it is known at VF is the crazy wide bodied E92 M3 we reviewed back in August last year. So 620hp, check. More grip then super glue, check. Stealth powers that hide us from radar and laser, no and a big NO.
