WHERE TWO WORLD HERITAGELISTED WONDERS COLLIDE

This is the place circled by nature, where two World Heritage areas meet, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. It is where families come to play, couples come to relax and travellers come to explore. The place to discover secluded beaches, welcoming villages, decadent dining and friendly locals. This is the place to unwind with a peaceful escape, engage in memorable experiences or discover pure exhilaration.

Tourism Port Douglas Daintree acknowledges the custodianship of the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef by the region’s Kuku Yalanji and Yirraganydji people whose rich cultures, heritage values, enduring connections and shared efforts protect our natural assets for future generations, and we pay our respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

Port Douglas and the Daintree is leading the way in its approach to sustainable tourism being the first to achieve Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Destination certification in late 2019.

PORT DOUGLAS AND THE DAINTREE

A change overcomes you when you turn off the highway. It’s the loosening of shoulders, deeper breathing, and appreciation of nature in its technicolour beauty. Welcome to your launchpad to the

OUR SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

As Kermit the Frog says, “It’s not easy being green.” However, as the world’s first destination to achieve Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Destination Certification, Port Douglas and the Daintree have made sustainable travel easy.

Port Douglas and the Daintree have been in the green game for a long time. The bulldozers were literally stopped in their tracks in 1984 when protestors chained themselves to trees during the Daintree Blockade. Although the road between Cape Tribulation and Bloomfield eventually went ahead, the efforts of the protestors led to the region becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

In 2019, the region was awarded Australia’s first ECO Destination Certification. Port Douglas Daintree

has since been consistently recognised in the Top 100 Most Sustainable Destinations in the World by the Global Green Group since 2018. With two incredible natural assets, 80% of the region being protected under World Heritage listing, the centre of everything Port Douglas Daintree do is about being sustainable across the environment, economy and culture, while sharing inspirational experiences.

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

A visit to Port Douglas Daintree is not complete without spending time visiting one of the natural wonders of the world – the Great Barrier Reef. The reef spans more than 2,000 kilometres, has more than 3,000 individual reefs and coral cays and some of the world’s most idyllic tropical islands. It’s the only living structure on Earth that can be seen from outer space. Great Barrier Reef trips, full-day and half-day,

depart daily from both Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation (subject to availability). You can explore this amazing underwater world on a snorkel tour, with no experience necessary. Port Douglas also offers scuba diving courses, or multi-dive packages for certified divers. Or, for those looking to stay high and dry, sailing trips, glass bottom boat and semi-submersible tours are available.

When you think of Port Douglas and the Great Barrier Reef, one name comes to mind – Quicksilver Cruises. Part of Port’s fabric for over 40 years, Quicksilver is known for their multi award-winning Great Barrier Reef experiences and one of Australia’s pioneering eco-certified operators. From day trips to a spacious activity platform at the spectacular Agincourt Reef, dive and snorkel adventures visiting three different sites with Silversonic, or a lazy day on the idyllic Low Isles aboard Wavedancer, you’ll be spoilt for choice. And now you can discover the magic of scuba with a pool dive at Quicksilver Dive’s 5-star PADI training centre in the heart of Port. Professional dive instructors will teach you the basic skills for an exciting and fun experience. Once you’ve completed the Discover Scuba Pool Dive, you aren’t certified but will be ready to do an introductory dive in the magnificent Great Barrier Reef or even go on to get certified.

Calypso Port Douglas Reef Cruises offer a variety of family cruises, reef tours, and dive trips to the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkelling and diving the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is an adventure. Exploring the coral gardens in search of weird and wonderful marine

creatures at Opal Reef and Agincourt Reef will keep you busy for hours.

Three sites are visited daily providing an insight into this large, unique and extraordinary living organism that is the Great Barrier Reef. Calypso’s custom designed vessels offer the very best in comfort with spacious decks, day-bed style seating, air-conditioned saloons and submerged platforms, extending the width of the vessel, to allow for easy access to and from the water. Calypso also operates half-day snorkelling tours to the Low Isles as well as full luxury rainforest tours in their luxury Mercedes with only 11 guests.

Snorkelling is the most popular way to experience the Great Barrier Reef. Marvel at spectacular coral formations thousands of years in the making and an amazing array of exotic rainbowcoloured tropical fish.

The Great Barrier Reef’s warm waters are a marine magnet attracting creatures ranging from birds to 100-tonne humpback whales. The currents and trade winds bring them from all over the world, including whales and dolphins attracted by the warm tropical waters. Plankton drifts towards the reef and provides food for whales. The warm waters also attract seahorses, barramundi, cod and Maori wrasse.

Low Isles consists of two islands.

Woody Island is an uninhabited coral/ mangrove island while Low Island is a sandy coral cay typical of the Great Barrier Reef. Located only 15 kilometres off the coast of Port Douglas, Low Island’s picturesque setting with a lighthouse, thatched beach umbrellas on a wide, sandy beach, and lush vegetation is simply stunning.

Port Douglas tours to Low Isles offer options to suit the most discerning traveller. Sail from Port Douglas on a full or half-day excursion or, for those looking for a little luxury, some boats offer ‘adults only’ experiences with small passenger numbers.

Shaolin is an authentic Chinese Junk Boat, built in China and launched in Hong Kong in 1969, which makes her 55 years old this year. She is built with original teak timbers and with her beautiful bright red sails up, she is a stunning sight to see.

Her original owners sailed her around the world where they were commandeered by the CIA as a radio listening post off the coast of China then boarded by pirates in Somalia. Then they operated her as a shell diving boat up in Micronesia, where the original captain passed away. His wife was unable to sail her on her own, so she sold it to a local Port Douglas man.

Shaolin has since been operating snorkelling tours to Low Isles for the past 37 years. She is now owned and operated by born and bred locals, brother and sister team Flynn Bickford and Kate Agrums. Shaolin runs their very popular Sensational Seafood Lunch Sail runs every day at 11am and 1.30pm, a stunning Sunset Sail every evening and private charters to Low Isles. Book online or call 0407 406 386.

Ocean Safari offers an exhilarating ride to snorkel the pristine Great Barrier Reef off the Daintree Coast at Cape Tribulation. The half-day eco tour visits two snorkel destinations, each with an extraordinary array of marine life and coral species. After a fast 25-minute ride, guests are ready to snorkel two fabulous locations, and with a maximum of 25 passengers, guests experience tropical paradise in the pleasure of a small group. Ocean Safari provides a complete reef and rainforest package, also offering onsite camping and cabin accommodation at Safari Lodge and delicious meal options at the Turtle Rock Cafe.

Another popular way to discover the Great Barrier Reef is to take to the seas and enjoy the tranquility of sailing. Visit Low Isles or Mackay Coral Cay while you sip champagne and nibble on canapes as you watch the sun set over the mountains of the Daintree Rainforest. Tours to the Great Barrier Reef will take you to sites that make up the most pristine parts of the World Heritage area, including coral cays, Low Isles, and the Ribbon Reefs.

If you’re seeking a luxurious option with pure sailing on beautiful yachts and small numbers of guests, join Sailaway Reef & Island Tours. They offer either a full-day experience to the island, suitable for all ages, or enjoy a later start with the Afternoon Sunset Sail for adults only, combining snorkelling and sunset sailing. Their team of marine biologists will offer expert guiding and take you on a snorkel tour over the coral gardens to spot turtles, beautiful corals and a variety of marine life.

A guided Low Isles Heritage Walk is also an opportunity to fully appreciate the history and authenticity of this idyllic tropical island. When looking out to sea at night from Port Douglas Daintree coast, Low Isles Lighthouse can be clearly seen with one white flash every ten seconds. This has been consistent since 1878, a recognisable “heartbeat” of the Great Barrier Reef for over 146 years!

Sailaway is a local family business, passionate about the environment and sustainability and sets the standards

high for nature-based experiences of the Great Barrier Reef. Attracting discerning, environmentally-conscious visitors and primarily powered by wind, Sailaway has been carbon neutral since 2012 and nationally awarded for best practice and sustainability. Looking for more adventure on the wild side? INDIGENOUS CULTURE

The Kuku Yalanji people are the traditional owners of the lands of Port Douglas Daintree and welcome you to come and learn about their fascinating traditions and way of life. It’s a wonderful opportunity for visitors, and the region has several ways to experience this ancient living culture.

Today, the Kuku Yalanji people are very active in the tourism industry, offering a unique insight into their culture and its connection to Country. Be welcomed to their land in a traditional “smoking ceremony” before taking a guided walk with an Aboriginal guide. Speaking in their own language, they’ll teach you about traditional hunting and gathering. You’ll have the chance to sample “bush tucker”, learn firsthand how to search for mud crabs, fish, and shellfish, and try timehonoured hunting techniques.

For a change of pace take the family to a hands-on Aboriginal art workshop. Create your own authentic Aboriginal souvenir while listening to stories from a local Elder. Dreamtime stories have been told for thousands of years

and are another fascinating way to learn about Aboriginal culture and a great place to experience this is at the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre.

The Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre provides traditional music performances, artefact displays, and guided tours, illustrating their rich cultural heritage.

A must-do is their guided Ngadiku (Nar-di-gul) Dreamtime Walk tour. Get a deeper understanding of the ancient flora and fauna of the rainforest and learn about traditional plant uses and Kuku Yalanji culture, giving visitors a rare insight into the special relationship the local Indigenous people have with the rainforest.

Dreamtime Walks leave from the Cultural Centre four times daily at 10am, 11am, 1pm and 2pm. Bookings are essential and subject to availability. Duration is 90 minutes and includes freshly made damper and billy tea at the end of your walk.

North Queensland is the only place in the world where two distinct Indigenous cultures live side by side, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and artworks from both cultures are represented in Port Douglas and Cairns.

Australian and Oceanic Art Gallery in Wharf St Port Douglas presents a captivating collection of contemporary art and specialises in North Queensland works. The gallery highlights pieces by some of the region’s most acclaimed and

collectible artists, with many featured in major collections and institutions. Visit their gallery to browse a diverse selection or explore their website for

MOSSMAN

Mossman is a picturesque little township where you can enjoy country stores and historic pubs along the wide, tree-lined main street.

Five minutes west of Mossman you will discover Mossman Gorge, a very accessible and scenic section of the World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park. Here the Mossman River tumbles its way over huge granite boulders that line the gorge, creating freshwater swimming holes. Walk as far as the suspension bridge across the river or explore the 2.7-kilometre rainforest loop trail.

You can choose from four Mossman Gorge Walking Tracks ranging from short, easy walks to the moderate 45-minute Rainforest Circuit Track. The Baral Marrjanga Walk is 270 metres long and will take 5–10 minutes. Start from the shuttle bus stop and pass through the rainforest to a lookout

over the Mossman River. It includes sections of boardwalk and the walk is suitable for wheelchairs and prams.

Mossman is known as the region’s sugar capital. The Mossman Central Mill throbs and hums its way through the sugar cane crushing season from June to November when the cane trains rattle back and forth down the main street through town. It’s an unforgettable sight for visitors.

Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery is a boutique, family-run winery producing tropical fruit wines from organic fruits grown and harvested on the property at Shannonvale, just 20 minutes north of Port Douglas and 10 minutes from Mossman. More than 20 years the Woodall family has been making award-winning wines. From very dry wines to medium flavoured, full-bodied and port-style wines made from mango, lychee, passionfruit, lime,

black sapote and other rare fruits, all are expertly produced to commercial standards. All wines are single-fruit wines, not blends, and the fruits, all grown organically in their orchard, have big flavours that are retained in the wine. Seasonally harvested, locally-grown fruits are handcrafted into delicious, high-quality wines,

proudly presented by the charming owners for your tasting pleasure. Distinctive flavours such as ginger, the perfect pairing to authentic Thai cuisine, Jaboticaba and passionfruit, the ideal accompaniment to a good cheese platter, all are available to try at the cellar door.

WALKS AND HIKES

There are some places only your feet can take you, and – good news for avid walkers – pounding the pavement has never looked so good with so many dramatic coastlines, remote rainforests and hamstring-hammering hilltops up here. Whether you tackle these as an early morning wake-up call or a longer soulsearching odyssey, one thing’s for certain - the scenery of these Port Douglas and Daintree hiking trails will take your breath away faster than any day-hike will.

1. FOUR MILE BEACH

Distance: Approximately 4km one-way Fitness level: Easy

Salute the sun with a run along the famous Four Mile Beach. With golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see, crystal-clear water lapping gently against the shore and palm trees swaying in the coastal breeze, it’s very easy to lose track of time. Four Mile Beach is actually 4km long and gets its name from the Fourmile family.

2. FLAGSTAFF HILL WALKING TRAIL

Distance: Approximately 1.3km each way Fitness level: Easy

This 1.3km walking trail provides a link between Four Mile Beach and Rex Smeal Park, guaranteeing magnificent views out towards Low Isles, Snapper Island and the Daintree Rainforest. Keep your phone handy because this walk comes complete with a breathtaking viewing platform that hovers over the Coral Sea. Wrapping itself around the pinnacle point of Port Douglas, the track meanders through bushland up to the Flagstaff Hill Lookout, then back down to the iconic Rex Smeal Park. Be sure to stop for a moment and take in the majestic beauty of the giant fig tree with its tendrils that create a dramatic natural archway.

3. THE BUMP TRACK (WALK OR BIKE) & MOWBRAY FALLS

Distance: Approximately 12km return (to top). Fitness level: Moderate

This 6km track was originally an Indigenous trail between the coastal and mountain regions, and in the early days of settlement was a crucial link between Port Douglas and the hinterland for settlers and miners. Of all the jobs in the world, one can be truly grateful they were never a ‘spare boy’ on the Bump Track –responsible for chocking the back wheels of horse-drawn wagons at the steepest inclines to ensure no wagons rolled backwards (as they sometimes did).

4. MOSSMAN GORGE RAINFOREST CIRCUIT

Distance: Approximately 2.4km Fitness level: Easy

Mossman Gorge is the twinkle in the eye of the Daintree Rainforest, and the Mossman Gorge Circuit takes in the natural beauty of the area with lush green

foliage and pops of bright blue when large Ulysses butterflies swoon about. After bussing into parkland from the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, the first part of the walk is on an easy elevated boardwalk that follows the river. Just past Rex Creek Bridge on the left, you’ll find the Mt Demi lookout and the start of the ‘Rainforest Circuit’ – an easy and well-signed track that will get you up close and personal in this spectacular rainforest world.

5. MOUNT SORROW

Distance: Approximately 7km return Fitness level: Experienced

This trail in the Daintree National Park is for those who like a challenge! Be warned though, Mount Sorrow is not for everyone – only experienced bushwalkers with above average fitness should attempt this trail which is quite steep and difficult in spots with lots of log scrambling required in places. This hike takes you along the ridgeline of Mount Sorrow and through lush tropical Daintree Rainforest.

The village itself has a general store, information and booking office, artist’s studio, cafes and the Daintree Village Hotel. The village has a wide choice of accommodation with high-quality B&Bs, budget cabins and a camping and caravan park. There are also luxury, secluded holiday homes tucked away in the valleys as well as an eco-lodge and spa. Explore the Daintree on

your own or with an expert guide to experience ancient rainforests, stunning valleys, superb beaches, spectacular forest-clad mountains, clear streams, magnificent rivers and rolling farmlands. Hidden in the diverse range of lush vegetation you’ll see a wide variety of rare creatures, maybe even the elusive tree kangaroo and the endangered cassowary.

This region is also regarded as one of the finest birdwatching areas in Australia, hosting more than half of the continent’s bird species. An early outing north of the Daintree River can be truly rewarding when many species are active. The Daintree National Park’s Jindalba, Marrdja Dubuji Boardwalks are great locations for birdwatching. Daintree River Cruise

BIRDS OF THE DAINTREE

wildlife river tours leave from various points along the river, including the ferry crossing and Daintree Village.

The Daintree is a birdwatching paradise, with more than half of Australia’s bird species recorded there. The Wet Tropics Rainforest has 13 endemic species and many of these can be seen in and around Daintree. The Daintree provides an amazing variety of habitats for a diverse range of birds. None more famous than the Southern cassowary. These spectacular and unique flightless birds can be 1.8 metres tall and can live up to 40 years.

Although shy, male cassowaries may aggressively attack humans when protecting their eggs.

Bird enthusiasts from around the world flock to the Daintree every year. Many of the 430 species recorded there are seen all year round, although some are seasonal visitors. Spring sees certain species returning from the north, while others arrive for their breeding season.

Summer can be excellent for birding with the spring arrivals joined by several other species. Whilst autumn sees the departure of the migrants to warmer climes, they are joined by Dollar Birds and Rainbow Bee-eaters, adding to the colourful regulars. Winter is the quietest time of the year for birds but provides the best weather for those watching.

CRUISE THE DAINTREE RIVER

The Daintree River, winding through the oldest living rainforest in the world, is one of the longest rivers on the Australian east coast at 140 kilometres. It harbours 35 mangrove fish species and its lush swamp forest attracts rare and locally prolific bird life, frogs and insect species.

Fishing the Daintree River is an outstanding experience. There’s a huge diversity of species from the saltwater ecosystem at the river mouth, to the brackish water in the middle reaches

and the freshwater in the upper parts.

Cruise the Daintree River spotting wildlife while you get closer to nature. This is the best way of seeing and understanding the river’s ecosystem and wildlife.

Crocodile Express has been cruising the Daintree since 1979 and have two launch points from which to start your river adventure.

The Daintree River is the habitat of the Estuarine (saltwater) crocodile and wildlife cruises on the river have become renowned for their success in croc-spotting. The Daintree River has a population of about 70 adult crocodiles, some up to six metres in length, and there’s nothing more exciting than seeing these prehistoric monsters in the wild!

Tours are conducted in the conservation zone of the river, which means feeding the crocodiles is not allowed. Crocodile-spotting and

NATIONAL PARKS

MOWBRAY NATIONAL PARK

This little-known national park, featuring rainforest and open eucalypt forest, covers the coastal range behind Port Douglas. The pyramid-shaped peak you’ll see is Black Mountain, a prominent landmark feature. Four-wheel-drive enthusiasts will be keen to drive the popular 43km Black Mountain Road that runs through the park, passing through native forest, pine plantations and farmland and crossing picturesque creeks. Access is via Kuranda or Julatten.

Stretch your legs or pedal your mountain bike on the long-distance Bump Track (12km return). This historic track, blazed in 1877, offers views of the Mowbray River Valley where the Mowbray River drops through a gorge carved into the forested foothills of the Macalister Range. The track is shared by walkers, mountain bike riders and horse riders.

Location and getting there

To reach the bottom of the Bump Track, head south from Port Douglas and 1.5km past Craiglie, turn right into Mowbray River Road then turn into Connolly Road and continue for 3.5km to the Bump Track.

DAINTREE NATIONAL PARK

Forget about everyday life and soak up the privilege of exploring the world’s most ancient rainforest in the iconic Daintree National Park, part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area.

Start your journey at Mossman Gorge where crystal-clear waters cascade over granite boulders. In the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, browse for local Indigenous art, enjoy tea and damper at the cafe then set off to explore the famed Mossman Gorge – a shuttle bus will take you into the heart of the park. Spot spectacular butterflies as you amble along an elevated boardwalk through the rainforest and gaze over the gushing waters and granite boulders of the scenic Mossman River. Walk across the gently-swaying suspension bridge spanning Rex Creek, then immerse yourself in moist, cool, green rainforest on an easy circuit walk.

You can also experience this ancient rainforest from every level on the Daintree’s canopy tower and aerial

walkway, where you can witness ground breaking rainforest research in action and find out more about how you can help protect this unique environment.
