COVID-19 Vaccine Schedule Reduced To Single Dose

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced that anyone 5 years or older who is not yet vaccinated can receive one bivalent vaccine as their first dose. Until now people had to complete their primary series of vaccination with two shots in two separate visits to a clinic.

For young children, multiple doses continue to be recommended and will vary by age, vaccine, and which vaccines were previously received.

The CDC also announced that those who are 65 years of age and older and those who are immunocompromised may receive a second bivalent COVID-19 vaccine if they have already received their first. Those who do not fall into these two categories are not currently eligible for a second bivalent vaccine.

Vaccines are available at Austin Public Health’s Shots for Tots and Big Shots clinics, as well as our community vaccine events. You can also find a list of vaccine providers in your area at Vaccines.gov (Vacunas.gov in Spanish).
