Site and Programatic studies consider the functionality and aptitude of a given locale to support the construction of a Poetry Foundation for the city of Cincinnati.
Fall Design Studio, 2017
poetics of place In this fictitious studio project, analysis of the Over the Rhine neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio drives the design of a public Poetry Foundation - situated amongst locally owned shops, restaurants, and community housing. A 10,000 square foot space limitation demands a rigorous consideration of program, accessibility, and circulation through the interior spaces.

‘Perminance’ of Place
‘architecture as intermediary in delineating the cosmology of program’ Just as language is backformed to meet the demands of traditional societies, form and structure are often actively antiquated for historical reference. Presence, perminance, and relevance are all important factors in early neolithic constructions - the purest instance occuring in the calculated positioning of ‘henge’ structures. These monuments served as the first examples of man-made trabeation - the earliest of which served as reference for those that followed. concept sketch pen and ink, Adobe Photoshop

In the urbanization and standardization of communities and architectural forms, the qualities off of which these early earthforms were built, faded into mere form reference, demarcating a distinct loss of vernacular consideration.

It is the intent of this study to reintroduce the essence of belonging to these referential monoliths, considered both in the contextual and programatic.
As space is divided by these ‘henges,’ it is also created in the material programming.

All three major ‘monolithic’ components of this design scheme will be constructed out of solid 3’ x 3’ sections of Indiana Limestone, collected less than 100 miles from the site in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Poetics of Place
The section-driven design was developed in drawing to explore the highly calculated vertail and lateral movements within the building, with respect to one-another.
Robert Pinsky, an American poet, explores the qualities of light as dawn progresses into dusk; the spatial sequencing in this study traces this evolution by essentializing Pinsky’s narrative.

This exercise in insertion evaluates the existing conditions of The Alms building at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. This design re-programs and expands the West wing of the building by ‘challenging the wall.’

Computer rendering serves as a valuable tool in conveying information in an accessible, visual manner; often, experiential qualities are projected onto a space by superfluous material. Architecture should speak for and of itself.

The notion of ‘peeling back’ at or challenging a wall is relevant beyond the observable architectural movements. In practice, we understand the University as a a place of discovery - a place of progress - and the situated analysis of classicist notions is an important part of this identity, especially in deviation.
