How To Replace Light Switch Faceplate Covers Safely

People change their light switch faceplate covers for various reasons. Sometimes, it is for decorative purposes. The market is filled with stylish faceplates that are designed to improve the appearance of a room. But in other cases, the faceplate has been damaged.

Regardless of the reason, if the faceplate needs replacing, you can either hire an electrician, which is more expensive than you think because the task is so small, or you can do the work yourself. The process is fairly simple and it involves the following:

1). Get your tools. You need an electrical tester, an insulated screwdriver, and some cutters.

2). To protect yourself from deadly electrical shocks, you must turn the power off. This is done at the fuse box. You can deactivate the power in the specific section of the house where the light switch is located. But if you have any doubts, flip all the switches and turn all the electricity in the house off.

3). Use your insulated screwdriver to remove the screws holding the plate to the wall.

4). Once you pull the plate out of the wall, you will notice a blue, brown, and green (or yellow) wire on the inside. These are the neutral, live, and earth wires respectively. The colors in your faceplate might vary depending on your country. Talk to an electrician to get clarification if you have questions.

5). Use the tester on the screw holding the live wire. If there is no electricity present, remove each of the screws holding the wires in place. Once this is done, you can remove the old plate.

6). At this point, it is a simple matter of getting a new plate, identifying the holes where the three wires will fit and screwing them into place. If necessary, use the cutters to expose more of the wire by stripping the top of the tip away.
