ello there and welcome to Pop-up Picturehouse’s Summer film season Pictures in the Park

Aunty Social’s Pop-Up Picture House is dedicated to bringing interesting and affordable film screenings to the Fylde Coast.

We plan screenings and events where people can watch and then discuss various types of films in accessible venues. We’ve screened films in a variety of locations including libraries, schools, youth clubs, galleries and theatres, and organised monthly film clubs, event cinema, young people’s summer holiday screenings and a film festival.

This summer we‘re screening in Stanley Park Visitor Centre. We love this popular community venue because it’s accessible, well-maintained and has good parking facilities and transport links. Also, the Friends of Stanley Park are an awesome bunch.

We’re bringing you a variety of independent and world films that you wouldn’t usually get to see locally on the big screen. So take a look through our programme, see what’s on offer and join us for a Summer of fantastic film!

About Aunty Social We’re a volunteer-run and led community arts organisation that aims to give the people of Blackpool and the Fylde Coast an opportunity to come together and to create or experience great art.

We’ve been going since 2011 and we coordinate a wide range of projects such as: • altblackpool: An online magazine about creativity & culture in Blackpool. Dedicated to keeping local people up to date with the local arts scene.

• Charabanc: A shop created to give local artists and makers a space to sell their products on the high street.

• Art & craft workshops: Sharing skills through informal sessions such as jewellery-making, sewing and knitting/ crochet (#knittazwithattitude) • The Winter Gardens Film Festival: Showcasing the best of modern and classic black and white film in the spectacular historical setting of Blackpool Winter Gardens, with our partners Blackpool Winter Gardens Trust.

films in july THE BOATHOUSE PICTURE SHOW (U)

Directed by Various. Genre: Children & families, Language: English Ahoy there little mateys! Join Aunty Social’s Pop-up Picturehouse for an afternoon of super-duper short films for all the family at Wordpool’s Big Friendly Family Day. We’ll be based in the Boathouse where we will hold 15 minute screenings throughout the day. We have lots of fantastic short films from around the world which have never been screened in Blackpool before.

There are lots of other exciting activities on the day, so come on down to Stanley Park, where you can pick up your activity map at the Visitors Centre or the Main Gates from 12.30pm. Did we mention that it’s all FREE! All children must be accompanied by an adult. We’ll be there rain or shine so dress for the weather!

MUSTANG (15)

Thursday 14th July, Start 7pm Directed by: Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Genre: Drama, Language: Turkish Awards: Oscar nomination: Best Foreign Language Film César (Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma): Best First Feature Film, Best Writing A stunning sensory experience and a powerful piece of social commentary cinema, Oscar-nominated Mustang is set to be one of this year’s most talked-about films. Five fiercely independent sisters, up against the social traditions and family values of small town Turkey fight back against the iron fist rule of an overbearing uncle. Severely punished for their innocent crime of being born female, the girls lean on each other to draw strength and determination in their pursuit of personal freedom.

Set against the sumptuous backdrop of rural Turkey and accompanied by a rousing score from Warren Ellis, this stunning sensory achievement is Deniz Gamze Erguven’s debut feature. Touching on and delicately presenting sensitive issues, Erguven focuses her attention on the triumph and impassioned power of the human spirit. Critically lauded and presented at films festivals worldwide, this is guaranteed to be one of the most talked-about films of the year.

Thursday 4th August, Start 7pm Directed by: Sean Baker, Genre: Drama, LGBT, Language: English It’s Christmas Eve in Tinseltown and Sin-Dee is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend hasn’t been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, this working girl and her best friend Alexandra, embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumour. Their riproaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity.

A favourite at the Sundance Film Festival, Tangerine received great admiration for being made for just $100,000 and shot on the iPhone 5. A truly DIY project, director Sean Baker found lead actors Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez by hanging out at Donut Time (which features in the film), he also used their real-life stories to shape the script. Other actors were sourced through Vine and Instagram.

Tangerine is a non-stop, vibrant and fierce trip into the LA street scene, that also explores a rarely seen on film Trans culture with great empathy.

Tale of Tales (15)

Thursday 18th August, Start 6:30pm Directed by: Matteo Carrone, Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Language: English, Awards: Official selection, 2015 Cannes Film Festival Tale of Tales is a sumptuous fantasy, based on classic 17th Century Italian fairy tales that went on to inspire Hans Christian Anderson.

We follow three incredible stories including a queen who gives birth after eating a sea monster’s heart, an old peasant woman who finds youth after falling asleep in an enchanted forest and a proud king who raises a flea as his child. Darkly funny and beautifully shot, these are fairy tales for grown-ups.

This is renowned director Matteo Garrone’s (Gomorrah, Reality) first english language film, which features a stellar cast including Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones and Stacy Martin.

Hailed as a masterpiece at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, this lavish, opulent and beguiling fantasy is a big screen must-see.

Thursday 1st September, Start:7pm Directed by: Dorota Kedzierzawska Genre: Drama Language: Polish, English Subtitles Awards: Coup de Cœur, Cannes,1994 A young girl nicknamed Wrona (Crow) is neglected by her busy and depressed single mum, who is always leaving her alone or locking her out of the flat.

Angry, lonely and confused, she wanders the streets of her seaside town. Desperate for her mother’s love, she kidnaps a toddler from a garden and takes the child to the beach, insisting that the infant calls her “mummy”. Wrona soon discovers just how hard being a parent really is.

Power in our Hands (PG)

Beautifully shot at locations on the Baltic coast, the dreamy cinematography helps to express loneliness, sadness and a yearning for human emotions and feelings. This is a delicate and heartbreaking film that looks at how children need and understand love.

Thursday 1st September, Start:7pm Directed by: Anna Paprzycka Genre: Short Documentary Language: Polish, English Subtitles To accompany Wrony, we’ll be taking an exclusive look at this short Polish language film by Blackpool-based film maker Anna Paprzycka.

After spending 20 years in prison, a man studies psychology to help young people; preventing them from making the same mistakes that he has made.

Sunday 11th September, Start 3:30pm Directed by: Angela Spielsinger, Genre: Documentary, Language: British Sign Language, English Subtitles Power in Our Hands is a ground-breaking documentary, containing newly digitised archive footage available to the public for the first time, on the Deaf community’s fight for civil rights and principally, the right to be heard.

Combining social history and archive film with contemporary interviews, Power in Our Hands explores the secret history and heritage of the Deaf community in the UK. At the heart of the Deaf world is British Sign Language (BSL), the first language of many Deaf people. The Deaf community does not see deafness as a disability; instead positioning itself as a significant cultural and linguistic group with a rich and exciting history, and with the word ‘Deaf’ (with a capitalised ‘D’) an expression of cultural identity.

From the social scenes of the 1930s, to the 2000 march supporting

BSL recognition, this documentary will give people a glimpse into Deaf culture that is mostly hidden from the hearing world.

This screening includes a discussion over afternoon tea.
