TRANSFORMING LIVES: THE POWER OF PHILANTHROPY Today marks a defining moment in history.Never before in our society has higher education faced the kind of political and economic challenges as it does today. At Augustana, we can assure you that despite these obstacles, we remain both ambitious and steadfast in our commitment to provide an education of enduring worth that challenges the intellect, fosters integrity and integrates faith with learning and service so that we may prepare our graduates to live and serve in a diverse world. Yet, as ambitious and tenacious as we may be, we cannot do it alone. The generous support of alumni and friends is vital to the future of Augustana and the students we serve. Those who invest in this institution -- through annual gifts, contributions to building campaigns, endowed scholarships, or other support -- ensure that tomorrow’s generation will look to Augustana’s service and achievements with the same sense of pride and reverence as we do today. It’s quite simple, really. When we offer our support today, we guarantee sustainability for tomorrow and beyond. We ensure that Augustana can continue to adapt to, and stay in sync with, advances in scholarship, science and technology. At the same time, our support makes it possible for Augustana to remain true to its culture and our 153 year-old reputation as a world-class institution which supports scientific exploration and discovery, the exchange of ideas and the development of mature faith, while adhering to the highest standards of teaching and research. Most importantly though, the philanthropic support of our alumni and friends enables Augustana to provide 97 percent of our students with financial aid and scholarships -- life-changing,transformational gifts that help some of the world’s most talented, creative and innovative young people achieve their full potential as students in preparation for lives as global citizens. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) defines a culture of philanthropy as one that“fosters relationships that share a common understanding, appreciation and responsibility for the importance of the joy of giving and receiving for the enhancement of the institution.” We belive that’s well said, indeed. Thanks to the help and support of alumni and friends, the 2012-13 academic year was another extraordinary period in Augustana’s history. We continued to make a difference in the lives of our students, we recorded breakthroughs in our scientific and social research, enriched the hearts and minds of thousands through the performing and visual arts, and forged strong connections in our community. We welcomed newcomers and said goodbye to dear friends. We announced plans for the largest building project in our 153-year history, took home athletic championships, climbed in influential national rankings and strengthened our connections abroad. Your philanthropic support helped make these achievements possible. Thank you for supporting Augustana!
