Entertainment Venues Columbia County offers a variety of places for residents to enjoy live performances. • The 5,000-seat Lady Antebellum Amphitheater and Josh Kelley Stage at Evans Towne Center Park opened in 2012 and has quickly become a premier concert and event venue. • The Columbia County Exhibition Center opened near Grovetown in August of 2013. The $7.3 million, 47,000-square-foot building is available for trade shows, conventions, receptions and more. • The Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center in the Columbia County Library, a state-of-the-art performance theater, seats up to 289 people. • The old Columbia Theatre, the first movie theater in Columbia County, ran the newest releases from 1949 until it closed in 1963. The Theatre was acquired by the city of Harlem in 2005 and restoration funded by grants enabled the revitalization of its original appearance. Future plans call for using the facility as a multi-purpose performing arts venue. FAITH AND WORSHIP Columbia County extends a warm reception to people of all faiths and religious affiliations. The diverse religions represented throughout the county contribute to strong moral and family values evident among our residents. • Georgia’s oldest continuously meeting Baptist church, Kiokee Baptist Church, founded by Daniel Marshall in 1772, still stands today. It is a treasured landmark among the modern and historical buildings in and around the county seat of Appling. • First Baptist Church in Augusta, the birthplace of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1845, is the offspring of Kiokee. • Most Christian denominations are represented in Columbia County, along with interdenominational and nondenominational places of worship. • Other world religions, including Islam, Judaism, Sikh and Hindu, have footings in Columbia County as well. • The Augusta Jewish Community Center, in Evans, offers youth recreational programs to the public, including well-known summer day camp programs and specialty classes in the arts, sports and more in twice-
