Welcome to the Finnish Film Affair. The showcase event we started in 2012 has grown into a major film industry event bringing together Finnish filmmakers and international guests from all over the world. I couldn’t be more proud looking at what the event has become over the last six years. During the last FFA editions we have seen major international breakthroughs from several Finnish directors: Klaus Härö, Dome Karukoski, Selma Vilhunen, Juho Kuosmanen, to name a few. But even more important for the event’s success has been the growing ambition and energy among the Finnish filmmakers. I have no doubt in my mind that this is just a humble beginning and the world has plenty of more to hear and see from the Finnish filmmaking talent pool. That being said I write this text rather wistfully, because I am no longer directly involved with organizing the FFA. Luckily I didn’t move far from the festival, physically or metaphorically. I am still a member of the festival board and an unofficial godmother of the Finnish Film Affair even though I am no longer the CEO of the festival. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank all of you who made my years at HIFF so memorable and special. You know who you are. We hope you will have a Film Affair to Remember. Sara Norberg

Even though the girls are in the center of the story, the adult men also play a great role. Each girl has an important father figure, and the main theme of the series is growing up into womanhood in a male dominated world.

TOM OF FINLAND Tom of Finland is a beautiful and fascinating filmic portrait of Finnish artist Touko Laaksonen (Pekka Strang), and his journey to international success. In the film, Touko returns after the Continuation War to his somber and moralistic home of Finland, where homosexuality is illegal. To entertain himself and his friends, he begins drawing sketches of chiseled, free, uninhibited
and proud gay men. The illustrations are considered a danger in Finland, so Touko stashes them away. He even hides them from his sister Kaija (Jessica Grabowsky), even though the siblings are very close. While working at an advertising agency, Touko falls in love with a dancer, Veli “Nipa” Mäkinen (Lauri Tilkanen), but they are forced to hide their relationship. Veli encourages Touko to show people his work, and so his drawings end
up taking him to Los Angeles via Berlin. In L.A. Touko finds an appreciative audience for his art with the help of his friends. Penned under the name ‘Tom of Finland’, the illustrations become wildly popular and spark a revolution.

THE LAST BOOKSHOP IN THE WORLD Four Europeans from different cultures and different fields of art travel in a mini bus with quality books of world literature in a desert-like landscape to find a distant place where they will establish “the world’s last bookshop”. The isolated place is just perfect for that purpose as there the printed books of the world will be much safer from the termites of entertainment industry and the internet than they are in urban cities. On their way to the unknown, the travelers speak about the importance of reading and about the books that changed them, all the while wondering why violent crime literature has gained popularity in the Western world.

Fuck Off 2 – Images from Finland is Jörn Donner’s sequel to his film Fuck Off! Images from Finland (1971) and an attempt to depict the enormous change that has taken place in the Republic of Finland during these 45 years. The fundamental question is: in today’s Finland, is it worth living, dying, or fucking? In the centre of this subjective and egocentric story is the filmmaker himself. Fuck Off 2 – Images of Finland is connected to its predecessor through music. Many of the songs from the first film have now received new arrangements and new performers, but the lyrics have remained unchanged: they are just as current today as they were in 1971.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Jörn Donner (born in 1933) has had a distinguished career as a film director, producer, writer, and politician. Donner’s most famous films include Portraits of Women (1970) and Fuck Off! Images from Finland (1971). He has also won an Academy Award for producing Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander (1982).

Photo: J-P Passi, Moukafilmi 2017

Punk Voyage In December 2016, a remarkable chapter in music history was closed: the Finnish punk rock band Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät (PKN) retired. Punk Voyage is a feature length documentary film about the last years of the band, with all the ups and downs included. After becoming celebrities in Finland, this incredible quartet continued to conquer new fans around the world. During its seven-year run, PKN played nearly 300 gigs in 16 countries. In 2015, the band was selected to represent Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest, where they played for more than 100 million television spectators.

However, the busy traveling schedule and success created a lot of pressure within the band: Kari struggled with the temptations and responsibilities brought along by publicity; Sami extended his territory into politics and religion; Toni’s and roadie Niila’s crush on the same girl caused conflicts; and Pertti, tired of all this, decided to retire. Punk Voyage is a film about being true to oneself, making hard decisions and moving on in life. After seeing the film, Pertti said, “I give this film the full ten points,” and Toni said, “In the film, it’s funny when Kalle and Teukka ask what happened to Toni. And nothing had happened to me.”

EAST OF SWEDEN Three men who all have something to hide end up sharing a cabin on a northbound night train: Dominick is an undocumented African immigrant running from the authorities. Jere is a single dad involved in illegal business. Aleksi – a psychiatric patient running away from treatment. Jere and Dominick just want to make it to their destination without trouble, but Aleksi starts a confrontation, which leads to his accidental death. Jere and Dominick try to cover their tracks and part ways in northern Finland, trying to pretend nothing happened. But then, unbeknownst to each other, they run into the same woman: Aleksi’s ex-girlfriend, Vera. East of Sweden is a suspence drama that tells a story about what happens when good deeds and bad luck meet in a way no one can control.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT East of Sweden is a crime story, with emphasis on the word “story.” The focus is not in the crime itself, but in the chain of choices that the crime leads the main characters to make, and the consequences of those choices. The accidental death of a young man, Aleksi, ties three destinies together: those of Dominick, Jere and Vera. In their early 30’s, they’re

all products of the noughties. They try to put their lives on a more solid basis after a series of mistakes and miscalculations. And they still want to have faith in the future. Simo Halinen (born 1963) is a Finnish film director, screenwriter and author. He graduated from the School of Arts, Design and Architecture in 1995. Halinen released his first novel Idänsydänsimpukka in 2004 and a follow-up Lemmenomenia in 2008. He wrote and directed his first full-length feature film Cyclomania in 2001, and in 2013 he returned with Open Up to Me. In addition to his film work, Halinen has also written and directed for television. Kaiho Republic is an independent Finnish film and television production company. It was founded by Pete Eklund, Liisa Penttilä-Asikainen and Samuli Edelmann in 2013. They joined forces to create an inspiring enviroment for film and television. The company’s main goal is to produce high quality content for various platforms. Kaiho Republic works in close co-operation with national and international production companies, as well as experienced professionals and new emerging talents.

ENTREPRENEUR Entrepreneur is a feature documentary film about the everyday life of the self-employed and small entrepreneurs in today’s society. Of their dreams, integrity and ability to sustain their dignity even amidst hardships. Entrepreneur is a carnivalistic, melancholically comic road movie about Finland and entrepreneurs with passion and courage. Even when things hit rock bottom, they get back on their feet. In the film, the small becomes big and he ordinary becomes extraordinary. It depicts people’s ability to survive.

takes the viewer into a journey to big dreams and sleepless nights.

Entrepreneurship in different forms has been a part of my life as a director for over 20 years. My films have never been directly about me, but in every one I pose personal question. THE GUARDIAN ANGEL The Guardian Angel is a psychological thriller about a man who used hypnosis to turn another man into a robber and a murderer in post-war Copenhagen. Based on true events, it follows the incredible investigation of these crimes as a young investigator becomes obsessed with catching the psychological manipulator, in a battle of minds and wills. Focused on a single, fascinating case of an actual hypnosis crime, the story will use this situation to suggest deeper issues of how present-day systems use manipulation on all of us and to discuss the mass-mind of the modern world.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Increasingly blatant examples of invisible manipulation keep appearing through religious and political movements. I am greatly concerned how people’s mass-minded nature is repeatedly abused for purely negative means. This will inevitably render our environment into a cold and calculating place, and simultaneously prevent people from developing as independently thinking beings.

One key objective of the film is to reinforce individual modes of thought by questioning the environment’s influence. Arto Halonen is a Finnish director. His films, such as Princess, A Patriotic Man, Shadow of the Holy Book, White Rage and Pavlov’s Dogs won numerous international awards. He has received the EU Humanitarian Award, Finland Prize, City of Helsinki Culture Prize, and the Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Art Films Production AFP Ltd develops and produces creative, quality films, with the main focus on fiction films and documentaries. Some of the most recent productions include The Liberation of Skopje, which was selected as the Macedonian entry for the Oscars, the documentary film White Rage and the fiction films A Patriotic Man and Princess. Films by AFP have been sold to over 30 countries and the company has won several highly considered awards at film festivals around the world.

IRON SKY: THE COMING RACE 20 years after nuclear war ravaged the Earth, what’s left of humanity lives in a crumbling base on the Dark Side of the Moon… but they can’t survive here much longer. Obi, the daughter of the Moonbase’s leader, finds a glimmer of hope: an ancient map pointing into the Hollow Earth. Now Obi, along with Sasha the Russian Pilot and her best (and most muscular) friend Malcolm, venture to the center of the ruined planet to face the army of dinosaurs guarding mankind’s last hope for salvation: the Holy Grail.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT We have taken the crazy conspiracy theory into our hands and started to mold it into the backbone of a sci-fi film. The film is a satirical science fiction action comedy dressed up like a Hollywood sci-fi actioner – but also a socio-political satire that’s set out to challenge our view of the world. It’s a monumental, multi-layered, wild adventure in the style of Indiana Jones that’s entertaining but not afraid to

shock and surprise. Aim is to deliver a satisfying sci-fi film experience which has more qualities than just explosions and superheroes. Timo Vuorensola was established as one of the leading Finnish directors with Iron Sky (2012), an award-winning sci-fi/comedy, distributed in over 60 countries and seen by more than 10 million people. He earned a cult following with his first film, Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning (2005), also one of the most internationally popular Finnish films of all time. Iron Sky Universe is a production company focusing solely on expanding the Iron Sky Franchise and developing online platforms for audience engagement. Based on a widely successful 2012 Finnish-German-Australian sci-fi comedy ”Iron Sky”, the Iron Sky Universe company seeks to develop on the feature films, TV-series, games and merchandise, through active audience engagement.

LAUGH OR DIE A group of actors of the workers’ theatre is imprisoned and then sentenced to death. The commandant of the prison camp offers them a chance to avoid being shot: they must perform a play and entertain German troops coming to visit the infamous island. They have to make the German general laugh, or be shot. The film’s lead, Parikka, is an ambivalent main character: a famous actor who receives a death sentence for a horrible crime. Still, he gets a chance to reconcile with oneself through a common effort. The film’s deepest theme is the power of laughter. Even in the most oppressive circumstances, any community can survive if it’s able to find a way to address things through irony.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Laugh or Die is a project especially close to my heart. I have a past in theatre, both as a stage actor as well as a director. The film tells about fears I experienced as a performer: what it is like to perform with everything at stake, and succeed by a whisker.

This film is about power of laughter. Even in oppressive circumstances any community can survive if it knows how to address things through comedy. Hilarious and cruel. Touching and outrageous. These are my keywords to making this film. Heikki Kujanpää studied film in the School of Arts and Design. He made films like The Icebreaker and A Small Pilgrimage, both awarded international prizes. His feature Falling Angels (2008) won three Jussi Awards. Other films include: Pocket Parking (2013), TV series Beginning of the End (2009) and Absolutely Gloomy (2011). Inland Film Co. is an independent production company, based in Helsinki. It produces feature films and documentaries. Inland has produced or co-produced, Tatort Kiel-Tango für Borowski and Der Rekorbeobachter, short films Variationen and Pocket Parking, the documentaries The New Finn and Finns, the feature films Changes and Chronicles of Melanie.

THE MERCURIUS OF MOLENBEEK Aatos is six years old and he has come to the age where his mind is consumed by big abstract questions. His best friends are Amine (7-yearold Muslim boy) and Flo (6-year-old atheist girl). As he searches for his own worldview, Aatos faces big questions, and the answers he finds to them are tested as the three friends present differing viewpoints. Aatos and Amine live in MolenbeekSaint-Jean, near the Brussels city center. The daily routines of the surrounding Muslim community seem to be underpinned by a God that rises above everything else, Allah. This awakens a longing in the protagonist for something larger than human life. Since unlike Amine, Aatos is not part of the Muslim community, he wants to find a god for himself.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT In this film I play around with prejudices and break them by means of humor. I have toyed with seriousness in my previous films, and with this film I continue to develop my expression. In terms of style, I want the film to capture the way in which a child

observes reality: how a child’s gaze picks out what he finds essential. What is integral is to grasp the magic of a child’s world: how abstract things like God and religion are perceived from the child’s point of view by cinematic means. Reetta Huhtanen is a filmmaker based in Helsinki. She has graduated with a Master of Arts from the ELO Film School majoring in documentary directing. MOOMINS AND THE WINTER WONDERLAND Moomintroll won’t hibernate; he wants to explore the winter and gets Christmas on a visit. This winter is extraordinary; Moomintroll decides to stay awake to explore the winter instead of having his winter slumber as usually. And he finds out that winter is certainly totally different than he had imagined. Strangest creatures wander amidst the snowdrifts while midwinter darkness surrounds the Moominvalley. Moreover, an eccentric guest is soon to appear. This guest requires many measures, and is called Christmas, Hemulen tells an astounded Moomintroll.

Jakub Wroński: 4 award-winning art house animations (Polish & foreign festivals). Now character animator in a full-length animation (director: Mariusz Wilczyński). Laureate of Młoda Polska scholarship (Minister of Culture and National Heritage, 2010) and Jan Machulski Award for best animation 2014.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Filmkompaniet develops concepts others have not thought of: restored & developed an earlier animation master-piece: The Moomins, a vintage-collection with zestful, high-profile and elegant looks. Filmography: 2008 Moomin and Midsummer Madness, 74min; 2010 Moomins and the Comet Chase, 75min; 2013: 78-part TV-series Moomins.

Jakub Wroński: The idea of making a creative remake of this Moomin story assumes working closely with the already existing footage. It may seem restricting but for me it’s challenging and fascinating. The original animation is full of magic and mystery and vivid, abstract characters. Ira Carpelan: I think the understanding of the Moomin atmosphere and way of thinking are key issues in the production. Nobody would want to lose that grip, that ambience; it is the core to convey and above all to maintain throughout the narrative.

Ira Carpelan: This is Ira Carpelan’s first feature-length animation. Earlier e.g.: scriptwriting; script doctor consultant; International movie financing consultant for Rovio, Voice Director for over 100 children’s films and series.

PONY AND PIGEONBOY Pony and Pigeonboy tells a story of seven-year-old girl Pony who doesn’t want to go to school. Fortunately Pony meets an imaginary friend named Pigeonboy, an eccentric bird-like boy, who loves commercials and buns and hates the letter r. Pigeonboy has a solution to every problem. There are no limits when this duo sets off on their adventures. Pony and Pigeonboy is based on Veera Salmi’s popular children’s book. It was published in 2012 and was an instant success, starting a whole series of books with Pony and Pigeonboy.

and joy create enthusiasm, which both children and adults need in their private life, at school and at work. With this movie I encourage children and also adults to play, imagine and laugh as much as they need to.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Mari Rantasila is a Finnish film director, actress and singer. Her works include over 50 roles in television and film, eight albums and numerous prizes. Recently she has been focusing more and more on directing. Mari’s latest works as a director include three very popular and successful children films telling the story of a young boy Ricky Rapper.

The central point in the story is that children don’t have to give up an eccentric personality and become someone else once they start school and take their first steps into adulthood. In our main character Pony’s case, it means that she doesn’t have to stop playing and curb her imagination even though she’s starting school. We all need playfulness, humor and imagination. STUPID YOUNG HEART Stupid Young Heart is a story about the first love of lightly built, carefree Lenni and gorgeous and popular Kiira. Not yet even properly in a relationship, they discover that they are expecting a baby, and decide to keep it – partly as a statement to their families who have lost touch with what goes on in the teenagers’ lives. Lenni has nine months to become a man. Having grown up without a father figure, Lenni receives longed for adult attention from an unlikely friend Janne, a member of an extreme right wing activist group. After taking part in a scrambled attack on a local Mosque, while Kiira is rushed to the hospital to give birth, Lenni realises that he can be a man in his own way, even if he never had a chance to be a child himself.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Artists and filmmakers often end up making their work for the like-minded, for audiences who already agree with the artist’s worldview. In the case of Stupid Young Heart my wish is to truly bring people together. I want to challenge myself and our team

to give a voice to the human who is behind the prejudice and the fear – this without condoning to racism or fascist practices. I hope, through cinematic story telling, to create new understanding and give tools for self-reflection. She starts teaching students who are twenty years younger than her, only to find herself falling in love with Antti, one of her students. They are not an easy match, both being passionate about the music and overly ambitious about their careers. The Violin Player is a romantic drama about giving up on your dreams and letting your ambitions lead you.

Distractions had its’ international premiere at the Tallinn International Film Festival.

The Violin Player is a story about overwhelming ambitions, the impossibility of abandoning your dreams and the intensity of reaching for those dreams. I want my main characters, Karin and Antti, to cross their social and moral boundaries. They have to and they will search for the point where they never believed they would go. BLEEDING EYES Bleeding Eyes is a story about girl envy. In the sombre darkness of winter 18-year-old Henna becomes obsessed with Silja, the new girl in town. Silja seems to be better at everything she does and Henna can’t look away. Henna’s manic stalking makes her stumble on her binoculars and she ends up temporarily losing her eyesight. All her future plans are shattered and her worst fears seem to become true. She is hiding her ugly eyes behind a pair of sunglasses. Through them she has to face the consequences of her actions, and those aren’t pretty. How will she find her way out?

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Bleeding Eyes is a dark comedy about the fear of beauty, in ourselves and in others. It’s about reaching out to the things we fear most and growing in the process.

Maria K. Mononen is a graduate from ELO Film School Helsinki and has directed several short films, such as My Heart, My Bad and 99 Problems or I’ve Been Thinking These Thoughts of Mine. At the moment she is working on two feature length scripts of which one, Bleeding Eyes, is participating at FFA. When not writing or directing films Maria writes folk songs. Silva Mysterium, founded over twenty years ago, has produced fiction both for cinemas and TV and documentaries. The company also produces radio plays. It is run by producers Mika Ritalahti and Niko Ritalahti, who both have an extensive experience in the film industry. The recent feature film Star Boys, is directed by awarded documentary director Visa Koiso-Kanttila, as his first feature film. BROOKLYN KING In present day Brooklyn, two boxing prodigies’ careers and budding love affair are broken, and their coach’s life shattered, as a street fight leads to a police officer killing an innocent man. A young fighter is rendered deaf and tries to find solace through revenge. As the justice system fails to punish the killer of the coach’s dead brother, he is introduced to violent activists who are about to take justice into their own hands.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT I started to plan a film that was based on the idea that random violence changes the course of one’s life with the additional interest point of the victim knowing the perpetrator. Having access to him and therefore contemplating his actions. He knows this guy killed his brother, but he doesn’t know what he’s going to do about it. When a Caucasian police officer shoots an innocent African American man, the story goes to a new level and the protagonist must deal with an unjust society.

Olli Koivula is a Finnish film director who studies filmmaking in NYC. Koivula’s resume’s highlights are his debut feature Full Circle and his thesis short film 14085. Full Circle is an independent feature film shot in New York. The film won numerous awards and is distributed in the US by Entertainment One. The title of the short film 14085 is the number of people killed by guns each year in the U.S. It is an important fact for Koivula, that his films have a message, in this particular film carrying the consequences to one’s actions, especially dealing with such instruments as guns. Koivulan Filmi ja Video Oy co-produced Koivula’s first feature Full Circle with NYC based Sli Entertainment in 2013. CARCASS American photojournalist Sarah Simmons arrives in a remote Finnish village to begin a new career as a nature photographer. In the bear lands of Kainuu, she finds a peaceful nature hide for her photoshoot but when she accidentally witnesses a group of poachers killing a hibernating bear, everything changes. The hunters target Sarah and she must flee deep into the forest. Soon Sarah realizes she is being followed by something else too: a malevolent bear spirit that wants revenge. Eventually the true purpose of the spirit is revealed when Sarah finds the bodies of the local hunters with the bear carcass. Sarah knows she will be the next victim and makes one last desperate attempt to escape the hide, only to sink deeper into the demon bear’s bloody maw.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Carcass’s elements of suspense and horror are built on the fear of being lost and alone in the dark forest. At first, the untouched beauty of nature

seems ideal but little by little, our protagonist loses all the security of modern society. All connections to civilization are severed. The human must face the animal within. Carcass deals with themes of isolation and guilt, also touching on the estranged and abusive relationship we have with nature. Eventually nature will fight back. Mare Jatkola is a Finnish director, editor and producer. In 2015 he directed Syyllinen. He also worked on Hard Student I-V and Jade Warrior with AJ Annila. CONDUCTIVITY What does it take to become a conductor? Having the perfect conducting technique and knowing the piece by heart is not enough - you also need to have something special that inspires the orchestra, and a natural way of taking authority. The documentary Conductivity follows three young conducting students from Finland, France and Taiwan at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki as they struggle to find their place in the hierarchical world of classical music. Their challenge is to find their own way of taking leadership in order to transmit their musical views to the orchestra; or to find a collective breathing pace, as one of them describes the feeling. The Sibelius Academy is one of the most prestigious European music academies and it’s conductor class is world famous.

DARK CHRIST An elderly art dealer Olavi (Heikki Nousiainen) is planning to retire. His art store in the centre of Helsinki has passed its glory days as young and dynamic art dealers have taken over the scene. Olavi is about to give in even though he is afraid to let go of his lifetime profession. By coincidence Olavi discovers a heavily underpriced painting named The Dark Christ. The painting is claimed to be a piece of artwork by Ilja Repin, but there is no solid proof of the origin of the painting. The uncertainty of the author results in a considerably low price tag. Olavi decides to take a chance wanting to prove himself to the art world and to his family. He borrows all the savings from his grandson in order to leave the art scene as a winner. This is when everything starts to go terribly wrong.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Our story takes place in Helsinki, Finland, where an art dealer, on the verge of retirement, is trying to prove himself to his family, friends and to the entire art scene. Like in the novel The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway, our main character has to defy fate. The painting he is trying to acquire is an old somber painting representing The Christ, therefore the film’s title Dark Christ.

Klaus Härö is one of the most acclaimed directors in Finland. His films have won more than 60 awards around the globe. FLEAK FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION A young boy experiences two big changes in his life: he loses his ability to walk and meets a bug from another dimension. Together they seek a walking medicine from another world but instead of medicine they bring back a monster.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Usual tip to hear from a successful screenwriter is that ‘you should write something that you’d like to see yourself’. Writing of the first draft of the script for Fleak From Another Dimension was inspired by this thought – the film will be an engaging fantasy adventure with a strong main character. The vast majority of contemporary animated feature films are rather talkative comedies wheras this film leaps into the realm of youth, adventure and imagination.

NIMBY – A COMEDY ABOUT THE INTOLERANCE AMONG TOLERANT PEOPLE

NIMBY Mervi is a gay girl living in the hipster quarters of Helsinki. She has been together with Kata for a year, and now they are encouraged by the circumstances to come out from closet. When they do, Mervi realises that she is not the only one in her family with secrets – her parents have been living in an open-bisexual-swinger-relationship for 20 years. On the other hand Kata is pretty surprised that she might be living with a straight girl that once was dating a Neo-Nazi. And the ex-boyfriend cannot stand that Mervi is now with a person both of wrong colour and sex. The real threat appears when Kata’s parents arrive from Berlin and the local skinhead chief find out that a black muslim celebrity politician has arrived to town. Nimby is a comedy about the intolerance among tolerant people.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT: Nimby starts as a girls meets girl love story and it grows into a metaphor of today’s world of prejudice
and racism. It’s easier to live by your believes, than to change your own thinking. Everybody is fortified in their

own castles, with same kind of people. These castles are the basis for racism, even wars. The messages of the film is that deep inside we all are the same and you need to communicate with each other, even when your values and thoughts are totally different.

SCENES FROM A DYING TOWN Scenes From a Dying Town is a story of a small town and its inhabitants. The town is depicted through a core group of people, characters such as The Sexually Frustrated Man, The Three Hopeful Sisters, The Soldier, The Barman, The Outsider, The Man Who Fears Everything, The Woman Who Mourns Her Cat and The Old Dog. The story begins with The Outsider entering the town. Scenes From a Dying Town observes such a dying, closed community through encounterings that happen between the people. It looks at a place, where everyone is somewhat of an outsider in their own life and sees what happens when an actual outsider arrives. What hopes, fears and dreams does he arouse? It is a film about having the courage to let go of the familiar and safe and about trusting the new and unknown.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT I wanted to make this film because I am interested in externality and in the collision of a person’s inner and outer world. What do we actually mean when we talk about externality and external threat? As half-Egyptian and half-Finnish, I have always felt myself a bit of an outsider, never fully

belonging anywhere and this feeling has pushed me to want to explore these inner and outer boundaries, who determines and defines them for us and how much do we actually set them for ourselves? Kaisa El Ramly graduated from the ELO Film School Helsinki, Aalto University in 2016. She also has a BA-degree in acting and has worked as an actress for several years in both theatre and in film. She is the winner of the Nordic Talent’2016 main prize. She is currently working on her debut feature film Scenes From a Dying Town. SCHOOL OF HOPE For the Western people education is self-evident and obligatory, but for the nomad tribes of the High Plateau of Atlas in Morocco, it’s a rare privilege. Climate change and overgrazing have forced the old, proud nomad tribes of Atlas into poverty and partial settlement. The state is practically ignoring them, leaving them without proper infrastructure; no water supply, no roads, no health care – and no schools. Many have been pushed by draught to move to cities, but one tribe has decided to fight against all the odds to get education for their children.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT For the Western people education is self-evident, but for the nomad tribes of the High Plateau of Atlas in Morocco, it’s a rare privilege. The nomads of Morocco are trying to find a way to cope with the changing environment and demands of a modernizing society, making their traditional lifestyle more difficult. Climate change is making them poorer and forcing them to settle down.

The nomads have realized that education would be the solution; it could give their children more chances to make a better living. But the road to that is full of obstacles. Director Mohamed El Aboudi was born and brought up in Morocco. He graduated from the University of Fes, Morocco with a BA in Theatre, 1991 and with a MA in Film & Television at Bond University, Australia in 1997. Film Director from CINETEL, Paris, France, 1991-1992. In his work Mohamed has been interested in strong human stories. THEIA Ada is a bounty hunter catching slaves escaping from mines on the Moon. One day, a teenage fugitive, Selene, falls from the sky. She begs Ada to take her to Theia who is said to grant slaves a new life on Earth, but Ada returns her to the guards. Suddenly, Ada sees a birthmark on Selene´s back: Could Selene be the baby she once gave away? To find out, Ada takes Selene across the polluted Lapland terrain to see Theia. Along the way, Ada is conflicted by Selene playing up the role of her lost child. Selene uses Ada emotionally and leaves her to die. Ada tracks Selene down to gain back her dignity. She learns that Theia was a hoax and Selene is trapped by slave traders. Ada gives up her life to protect Selene. As Selene´s life in the wild begins, she remembers Ada who wanted to be her mother.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Facing a traumatic memory and the consequences of abuse are at the core of Theia. A dystrophic genre provides extreme conditions to this universal theme. I want to address the ambivalent relationship between a mother and a child born from violence. In the mise en scène, I draw parallels between the story of the damaged Ada

and the ecological tragedy caused by the mining industry in Lapland. Theia is a study of the toxic elements in our culture and one woman´s chance to overcome the poisoning. Mari Mantela (b. 1978) studied directing at the Aalto University. Her award-winning short films (An Autobiography, Passion, The Children) have been screened at the international festivals and on television. She has a strong visual style and often combines digital imagery with traditional and character-driven storytelling. Theia is her debut feature. MADE was founded to produce films that represent and stretch the borderline between documentary and fiction; films that challenge their genres.
