them free with salvation. “As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”1 “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly were disobedient,”2 [so] “the Gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.”3 God’s Word says that “the Lord … is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”4 To show His love to all men, He sent Jesus to live, die and suffer for us: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”5
