Welcome to the MiNDFOOD season of Six Degrees of Separation. We are very happy to be associated with Auckland Theatre Company as a media partner for another season. It has been a pleasure to watch artistic director Colin McColl and ATC create thought-provoking theatre experiences that showcase the incredible talent that we have in this country. MiNDFOOD is proud to be part of this journey bringing theatre to life in such a beautiful, state-of-the-art building while supporting art and culture within New Zealand. MiNDFOOD is about smart thinking and the talented Jennifer Ward-Lealand has often featured throughout our pages over the years. Therefore, it seems fitting that MiNDFOOD is the proud sponsor and partner in this production where Ward-Lealand’s extraordinary talent will be showcased. Critically acclaimed Six Degrees of Separation has garnered various awards over the years and I am looking forward to seeing ATC’s unique take on it. There is nothing quite like going out and having a great night at the theatre. It is smart thinking indeed, much like MiNDFOOD and ATC. Enjoy.

Colin McColl Artistic Director Auckland Theatre Company

Welcome to the MiNDFOOD season of Six Degrees of Separation. John Guare’s wickedly funny comedy of bad manners was the toast of New York when it premiered there in 1990, winning an Obie Award, a New York Drama Critics Circle Award and an Olivier Award (for its subsequent London season). The play was also a finalist for the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. While it’s particular to a time and place (precellphones, pre-internet), the play’s themes of self-delusion, art and artifice, and racial stereotyping still resonate for us today. And it’s based on a real-life story (check out the true story on page 14 in this programme). In a kind of synchronicity that often happens when we’re exploring a particular subject for performance, we’ve heard of two incidents that suggest that, (in New Zealand anyway) each of us may be fewer than six degrees of separation away from anyone else in the world. An Auckland Theatre Company Patron 4

actually shared digs with David Hampton (the real-life young con artist in which the play is based). The famous address book (which gave David Hampton entry into the lives of wealthy Upper East Siders) was stolen from a friend of a friend of Auckland Theatre Company. Also, within the play, there are lots of comedy moments around the impossible idea that the boy’s father is directing a film of the musical Cats. Now it turns out there will be a film of Cats – premiering this summer with a cast that includes Judi Dench, Taylor Swift and Ian McKellen! Life imitating art! I would like to say a huge thank you to my lovely and very funny cast of young and not-so-young cats, to our stellar creative team and, of course, to everyone at Auckland Theatre Company who assists in getting the production up onto the stage. It’s been a huge buzz bringing the MiNDFOOD season of Six Degrees of Separation to life for you. We hope you enjoy it.

In a 1994 interview with Premiere magazine, Kevin Bacon mentioned that “he had worked with everybody in Hollywood or someone who’s worked with them”. Four college students claim to have invented the game that became known as Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon after watching two movies featuring Bacon: Footloose and The Air Up There. They began to speculate on how many movies Bacon had been in and the number of people with whom he had worked. The object of the game is to start with any actor or actress who has been in a movie and connect them to Kevin Bacon in the smallest number of links possible. Two people are linked if they’ve been in a movie together.

Six degrees of separation is the idea that all people are six, or fewer, social connections away from each other. As a result, a chain of ‘a friend of a friend’ statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps. It was originally set out by Frigyes Karinthy in 1929 and popularised in John Guare’s 1990 play, Six Degrees of Separation.
