Program Notes Elamus was written for the Charlotte New Music Dance Collaboration, working closely with choreographer Kelly McGill. The structural idea came from a scene in Rio, I Love You and initiated itself as an overlapping of distinctive textures that switched quickly, sketched out below. Very quiet sounds to silence were an important texture representing the observer or the artist. The struggle between the artist and their muse is mythic and the name of the initiating film scene was “La Musa.”

Vocalization: “Hah” Unvoiced percussive vocalizations with open “ah” vowel position, like a forceful breath out or the very beginning of “Happy” or “Hath.” “Sh” is again unvoiced and percussive, like shushing someone in the movie theater. “Ha” is in contrast to before as it is voiced and shouted forcefully like a power shout in Karate.
