From the Chairman When I reflect back on twenty-twelve, I recall how a hurting community in central Virginia was dramatically impacted by the work of Gleaning For The World. In partnership with Thomas Road Baptist Church and several other groups, Gleaning For the World stepped up to help the people of central Virginia get through the powerful Derecho storm that destroyed homes, businesses and left many without electricity for 10 days in the heat of summer. Central Virginia was just one of the many areas helped by Gleaning For The World in 2012. From the Derecho to SuperStorm Sandy, from Midwestern tornados to firestorms in Colorado, Gleaning has been at work 24/7. When homeless veterans needed a warm blanket or an elderly widow cried out for medical attention or a child was without shoes, Gleaning For The World came to the rescue. I am blessed to see the impact this organization continues to make every day here at home and around the world. I am impressed that this organization was hearalded again this year by Forbes Magazine - a testimony to the fact that every dollar donated is used wisely and efficiently to help the most hurting among us.

The ministry of Gleaning For The World changes lives by offering those in poverty and victims of disasters a chance at a life they would not have had without our efforts. When we send supplies to those who are in need, we also work with ministries in the area to share the Gospel so that we address not only physical needs, but spiritual needs as well. On a recent trip to the Dominican Republic, I was reminded of the difficult life people have when they are caught in the cycle of poverty. Haitians who come to the Dominican Republic to work cutting sugar cane, live on less in a year than most of us make in a few weeks. They lack medical care, adequate food and education. Many young girls become pregnant at an early age, and are left without money or support, and often turn to prostitution. Breaking this cycle is achievable. Through the provision
of food, medical supplies, and healthcare, goods to set up microenterprises, and most importantly, sharing the love of Christ, communities can be transformed. Future projects for 2013 include providing clothing, education and medical supplies needed for clinics and hospitals throughout the Dominican Republic. Working with other Christian groups, we will distribute supplies to volunteers and missionaries so people hear about God’s grace. The whole transformation starts with providing humanitarian supplies and ends with leading people to God. We provide the supplies. Missionaries distribute those supplies. We are seeing an average of 30,000 people accept the love of Christ each year. Our financial donors, product donors, shipping companies, staff and our network of faithful missionaries are all part of this organization based in rural Virginia. Working together, we reach people around the world. Thank you for helping make that possible.

Futbol!: Children in Kenya receive new soccer balls
Families in 20 countries received assistance from Gleaning For The World International Programs throughout 2012. Medical supplies and medical equipment, sewing machines, school supplies, food and even soccer balls for children were sent to Africa, Central America and the former Soviet Union. In total, we provided 70 international shipments at a value of $23,860,887. Helping mission groups around the world is a major part of our mission. This year, we have sent medical supplies to the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Jordan, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Kenya, Nigeria, Mexico, Ukraine and Burkina Faso. One of our programs impacted Central American countries with microenterprises — including candle making, which employs 125 families in that locality. Also, helping children is a special part of our outreach. We were fortunate to ship 40,000 pairs of children’s shoes to Djibouti, Africa. Many of the poorest of the poor lack food, medical care, education and a chance to change their environment. By providing supplies, we can change the long-term effects of poverty and offer families a chance for a brighter future. All of this is done by strategically partnering with other nonprofits that share the highest integrity, and with missionaries who use the supplies to support their Christian ministries. Our goal is to give the poor a chance to feed their families, provide a future for their children and give them hope for a better future.
Getting started: GFTW provides means to start up microenterprises in Central America
Mobile Medical Clinics Eight years in the making, Gleaning For The World released its next-generation Mobile Medical Clinic in 2012. Working with engineers and on-site medical teams, this new mobile unit is the most durable and effective tool of its kind anywhere in the world. With experimental units in Peru, South Africa, Kenya and the Appalachian region of the United States, this latest model ships to the Dominican Republic in 2013. It will be utilized with Haitian camps called bateyes. The Haitians come into the Dominican Republic to cut sugar cane and live in the camps provided by the sugar cane industry. Families often lack medical care, food, education
opportunities and the basics of life. Through the mobile medical clinic we provide medical care, medical education and distribute food, shoes, educational supplies and clothing. The Peterson Family Foundation plays a significant role in making this life-changing clinic possible. Through a coalition established by Gleaning, eight nonprofit organizations coordinate their efforts to reach the Haitian people living in these camps. For the first time, we are also working with ministries to train 100 new pastors in the Dominican Republic. Gleaning is committed to providing humanitarian care for all people and when possible to share the Gospel. The opportunity to impact the Dominican Republic with long-term solutions is one of many reasons we have made it a priority for the future.

This was an eventful year for the Teddy Bear Brigade. Continuing its mission “to provide comfort, security and love to children through the gift of a stuffed animal,” the TBB distributed nearly 70,000 stuffed animals in 2012 to children in the United States, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Haiti, Honduras, Djibouti, Burkina Faso, Iraq, Afghanistan, Guyana, Zimbabwe, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic. Each shipment of stuffed animals was sent along with humanitarian aid or disaster relief supplies. These stuffed animals were donated to the Teddy Bear Brigade by individuals, churches, schools, civic groups and businesses from over 30 states across the US and Canada. Stuffed animals were collected this year in creative ways — through the First Annual “Teddy Bear Toss” in partnership with Liberty University’s Hockey Program, “Fill the Bus” collections at local schools, and even claw machine enthusiasts “clawing” for the TBB.

TBB is able to share the love of Christ through the simple gift of a stuffed animal. Recipients included children who were victims of natural disasters and impoverished children who had never owned a stuffed animal. Chris McNutt from Appomattox, VA, who had the opportunity to take stuffed animals to Guatemala, shared: “Their eyes brighten up. They’re so excited and they say, ‘Is this really for me?’”

Gleaning Church Network As a faith-based nonprofit organization, we strategically develop and nurture our relationships with other faith-based groups. The new Gleaning Church Network was established in 2012 to accelerate our work with churches and seminaries. This two-fold opportunity provides education to churches so they can be effective in helping meet the needs of their local community in times of distress, while also allowing them the opportunity to reach out to meet the ongoing needs of our world. For example, the GCN was successful in connecting New York and New Jersey congregations to tractor-trailer shipments
of life-saving supplies for Hurricane Sandy victims. Disaster planning and mission work is a continuous process. The GCN helps small and large congregations alike to network, collaborate and contribute resources for national and international needs. There are currently 400 churches and faithbased non-profit organizations partnering with us in the Gleaning Church Network. We are available to speak with congregations, schools, businesses and civic organizations about how they can engage in this joint humanitarian effort.

Serving Those Who Served Thousands of our young people have been deployed to fight wars so we can be free. From Vietnam to Iraq to Afghanistan, our young soldiers have seen the horrors of war and witnessed things most of us cannot imagine. Some of the veterans have a tough time after they return and need help for years to recover. Some have lost their legs and arms while others suffer more extensive wounds. These wounded heroes deserve our help and gratitude. Some veterans, because of emotional trauma, cannot return to living in normal environments. Approximately 23% of all homeless in the United States are Veterans. As of 2011, there were 3.5 million Americans who spent time in homeless shelters or on the streets. In 2012, GFTW provided over $1 Million dollars in supplies to our displaced veterans through carefully selected partners who share our commitment to helping those brave men and women who had fought overseas for us. We were able to provide basic supplies, personal care items, sleeping mats and blankets. It’s our desire to continue this $1 Million dollar annual commitment to our armed services veterans.

Domestic Disaster Relief The United States experienced a record number of natural disasters in 2012 and Gleaning For The World was consistently among the first to respond. Fires, floods and extreme temperatures were just some of the challenges we faced. GFTW provided blankets, food, water, cleaning supplies, baby items and pet care products to many hard-hit areas. Through our network of churches, donors, volunteers and other non-profits we were able to send 173 shipments of supplies, worth an estimated $10,813,988. The devastation of SuperStorm Sandy generated an overwhelming response from both our financial and product donors. Resulting from this generosity, we spent over a month packing and shipping supplies to some of the most devastated areas in the Northeast. By the
end of 2012, we were able to send 42 loads of supplies to those impacted by SuperStorm Sandy, at an estimated value of $3,712,848. At the time this report was published, we had continued our assistance to the Northeast, bringing the total of shipments to 50. In every natural disaster such as a SuperStorm Sandy, we try to get to those in need within 12 to 24 hours. Through local churches we can reach those in need faster and more effectively than any other nonprofit.

Gleaning For The World would not exist if it were not for the dedication and support of our volunteers. Their involvement and loyalty is what makes us unique and so efficient among nonprofit organizations. We offer many volunteer opportunities to individuals and organizations. The central core of our volunteer base comes from local churches. We have approximately 25 church groups that participate on a regular monthly schedule with others standing by in the case of an emergency. We are fortunate to have a volunteer base that includes local college and high school students who need to complete
service hours, retirees, business groups, community service personnel and individuals who want to give back to those in need. In 2012, over 1,700 individuals logged 9,443 hours completing the tasks of sorting and packing supplies in the warehouse, manning tables at collection sites, and providing support for fundraising and special events. It is because of the generosity of our volunteers that we are able to serve millions of people here at home and around the world each year.
