A common misconception people have is that they can avoid California tax by setting up a Nevada LLC. New business owners should be aware of the following additional taxes that non-business do not have to pay; California Corp and/or LLC franchise fee, City business license taxes, County Personal Property taxes, Excise taxes, Sales Taxes, and employer payroll related taxes.

The one that surprises most new business owners is the City Business License tax as well as the County Personal property taxes. Each city has their own specific tax rate on gross revenue of business and Los Angeles County will send businesses a property tax bill on businesses’ assets held, such as (furniture, fixtures and computers).

Do not be frightened by the business license tax and the county personal property tax bill. They are typically small tax bills; 1/10th % of gross sale and 1.25% of business fixed assets. However, it is important that you do not overlook payment of such taxes, which could lead to incurring penalties and interest.

With Skechers being among the biggest footwear companies in the world, how did you choose to launch and build the company in Manhattan Beach?

Our family roots are here in Manhattan Beach and the active lifestyle this community embraces is deeply ingrained in the SKECHERS brand DNA. Our footwear is designed for people who love to be comfortable and casual, with a fusion of sport and style. This feeling of walking on The Strand and running the chip trail, of being with your family on the weekends, and of a quality of life unlike anywhere else is in our product — and to see the world embrace our footwear, well, it feels a bit like they are embracing this community.

Skechers and the Skechers Foundation continue to support an extraordinary amount of local charities, organizations and the like with Pier to Pier Friendship Walk and Special Olympics as recent examples.

How did this culture of giving back by you and the Skechers family develop into what it is today?

When we created the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship walk seven years ago, I never imaged how quickly it would grow. With the sup-

port of the South Bay community we set new records this year: 12,000 participants at the Walk and $1.4 million raised to support children with special needs and education.

We couldn’t have achieved this level of success without hundreds of local sponsors who have generously supported the Walk from day one. I’m inspired by the giving spirit of this community and it pushes us to reach higher ever year to help even more children succeed. The SKECHERS employees also go above and beyond to support this event every year. With their hard work and dedication, is has become the largest Walk in Southern California that benefits children with special needs and education.

As someone who is a true Manhattan Beach resident, what is it that first drew you to the community?

I came down here almost by accident. Made a wrong turn you might say. And then fell in love with downtown and of course the beach.

I knew right away that I wanted to raise my family here and work here if possible. My family shortly followed and we have been very fortunate to live and work in this beautiful community.

With such an amazing story of success within your family what piece of advice would you give to someone with a dream and a business plan?

Success is both mental and physical. It’s long days and long nights as you build your dream. It’s about not giving up and believing in yourself. It’s about knowing it is okay to fail and make mistakes as long as you learn from them. So, I would say success can be summed in three words: Determination, Dedication and Confidence. Believe and your dream will become a reality. And of course, love what you do.

A great quote from Winston Churchill to remember is, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

With 2015 coming to a close, and all of the tremendous success you have had this year, what exciting developments are on the horizon for you and Skechers?

2015 was an amazing year at SKECHERS. The company has grown to become the second largest

athletic footwear brand in the United States, the number one kids brand, and we now have more than 1,210 SKECHERS stores worldwide.

With upcoming ad campaigns featuring pop superstars Demi Lovato and Meghan Trainor, plus our ongoing partnerships with sports and music icons Sugar Ray Leonard and Ringo Starr, SKECHERS marketing reaches consumers of all ages. We also signed a multi-year agreement for the title sponsorship of the Los Angeles Marathon under the Skechers Performance Division.

Who would have thought, when we started this company in a house on The Strand, [that] its present status as a $3 billion company [would be] recognized globally? The sky is the limit and we’re excited for even more growth on the horizon as SKECHERS expands into new markets worldwide.

pick up a form, ask a question, seek advice or lodge a complaint. These days, in an effort to save on costs, many companies trim down their H.R. departments to focus on the bare essentials of business, sometimes to the point of eliminating this department all together. Others, with the same cost concerns, task these duties onto an existing staff member, who is often already an overwhelmed worker. But is this wise? What are the dangers? Do you really even need an H.R. department?

A company’s human resources department is responsible for a multitude of functions. They manage legal compliance, maintain files and records, handle training and development, recruitment and onboarding of new staff, employee insurance benefits, compensation and personnel reviews, employee and labor relations and payroll and tax filing. For many businesses, the various functions of the H.R. department are too comprehensive and complex to maintain in-house. Businesses that outsource these functions receive several advantages that support the company's bottom line.

Outsourcing helps reduce the cost of maintaining nonrevenuegenerating expenses. A fully functional H.R. department requires additional office space and highly trained and experienced staff.

Does My Business Need a Marketing Plan?

FOR MANY small business owners, the immediate issues of cash flow and daily operations come first and foremost. This is quite logical. However, it’s important to keep in mind that developing and following a concrete, long-term business plan is essential to success. One important aspect of this plan should be marketing.

WHY DEVELOP A MARKETING PLAN? Marketing allows you to reach new customers, promote your business and ultimately achieve growth.

Though it requires a financial investment (as well an investment of time), marketing can (and should) ultimately boost your bottom line.

Merely throwing money (or time) at the issue is not enough, however. Developing a plan is the most effective way to put your marketing dollars to work.

A carefully developed market-

ing plan will help you achieve the following: • Form a coherent strategy that reaches a broad yet relevant audience.

• Respond to unique situations.

• Decide upon an appropriate budget.

• Establish tasks and timelines in order to promote accountability.

• Develop a strategy and decide upon tactics: in what ways can you advertise your business? Newspapers, magazines, billboards, radio, television, direct marketing, and the Internet are a few of the most common mediums.

• Set a budget: how much can you afford to spend on marketing?

• Set measurable goals – perhaps you’d like to increase online traffic, or raise brand awareness; or perhaps you’d prefer to measure success based on an increase in sales. Whatever the case may be, set goals and measure your progress.

WHAT ABOUT INTERNET MARKETING? Internet marketing is a distinct form of marketing that is, in many ways, still developing. And in this day and age, it is indispensable. As a bare minimum, all companies need to develop some form of online presence.

After all, 81% of all consumers search for information online before making purchases.

It is highly recommendable that all small businesses have their own websites. What’s more, you should be actively engaged in bringing traffic to that site.

There are a number of ways to do this – two of the most important ways are through paid search engine advertising and through social media.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING Social media marketing is especially important to understand because it is unique, ubiquitous and low cost. Successful social media campaigns can work wonders for businesses both large and small.

What is the most important factor in a social media campaign? Content. In social media marketing, it is critical to provide your audience (i.e. your fans and followers) with material that they enjoy. This could be interesting blog posts, funny videos, useful how-to tutorials, inspirational photos, or any other form of Internet media.

The more your audience enjoys your content the more attention they will pay to your social media pages, and the more they will share that content – thus growing your audience.

Social media attention can translate into increased brand awareness and loyalty, higher search engine rankings for your company’s website, and even direct online sales.
