Summer is a magical time in Delray; a chance to experience the most fun small town in the USA without the crowds and traffic of the busier winter months. We give some reasons why summer rocks and also introduce you to a very special young leader Kilburn Sherman in this month’s City People feature. Kilburn is heavily involved in the young professionals movement in Delray and is also hard at work building the entrepreneurial ecosystem in our city. People like Kilburn appreciate both Delray’s existing charm and its vast potential to be an attractive place to live, raise a family and grow a company. Great cities always have a growth mindset and Kilburn is among a cadre of young leaders who will ensure that our city will remain vibrant and competitive. Luckily for Delray, Kilburn is one of many special young talents attracted to Delray. You’ll meet a few others as we introduce you to the latest scholarship winners from the Dare 2 Be Great Foundation. The goal of the organization is to mentor tomorrow’s leaders so that they may come back and help Delray reach new heights. This is the fourth crop of scholarship winners and they are doing incredible things and we could not be prouder. Also in this issue our usual vast array of things to do, places to go, things to eat, ways to exercise and stay healthy and a whole host of pictures and features that celebrate Delray Beach. But first a quick story: I recently ventured south on business to the big city of Miami. While waiting in an office tower reception room, I glanced down to see what I could read. Lo and behold there was Atlantic Ave magazine. When I asked my business associate about his choice of waiting room literature, he remarked: “the only place as cool as Delray is Miami. We want to keep an eye on the competition.” Well…I’m not sure we are competing with Miami, but we sure are a cool place. Speaking of which, stay cool as you enjoy Delray’s hot summer. Historic Colony Hotel Makes Major Contribution To Delray Beach Historical Society
Continuing a family tradition of giving back that began more than eight decades ago, Jestena Boughton, owner of the landmark Colony Hotel recently presented the Delray Beach Historical Society with a check for $10,000. “For more than 50 years the Delray Beach Historical Society has been ensuring that the history of our community is being celebrated and preserved for future generations,” Boughton said. “On behalf of the entire team at the Colony, we’re pleased to be able to make this donation, which will help the Historical Society continue to educate residents and visitors about Delray Beach’s fascinating past.” Each year Boughton, a third generation Delray Beach resident whose father and grandfather bought the historic 1926 hotel in 1935, takes $1 from each room-night stay and gives it to charitable organizations that further causes she’s passionate about, including historic and environmental preservation. The Achievement Centers for Children and Families was selected among the 26 non-profit organizations in the world, receiving a $50,000 grant from Northern Trust. In honor of their 125th anniversary, Northern Trust created a special $1.25 million fund to support programs that promote education for disadvantaged young people. It was smooth sailing for Camp Boggy Creek supporters last month. If you’ve never heard of Camp Boggy Creek now is the time to learn about this wonderful camp for children with serious illnesses. Founded in 1996 by Paul Newman and General Norman Schwarzkopf, the camp offers children the chance to experience a fun-filled week with other children who share similar experiences. The results are startling. “Children with 6/17/15 12:06 PM
serious illnesses who attend a SeriousFun Camp show improved confidence, higher self-esteem, a greater sense of independence and increased interest in social activity.” The camp has on-site medical care and gives seriously ill children a camp experience filled with compassion, laughter, acceptance and camaraderie. They go fishing, horseback riding or climbing rope towers – which is a rare treat for these children whose lives are marked by doctor’s visits, hospital stays and debilitating treatments. Located near Orlando, the 232-acre camp serves children aged seven to sixteen and their families. The best part is that Camp Boggy Creek never charges campers to attend or contribute anything other than a positive playful attitude. The Camp serves thousands of campers (and their families) year round with activity packed weekly and weekend programs. Over 7,000 children with serious illnesses from South Florida have attended the camp. The Southeast Advisory is a volunteer council of community leaders dedicated to creating awareness of Camp Boggy Creek and to sending local children to the Camp. In honor of the camps mission, a generous contributor from Delray donated the use of his private yacht so guests could learn about the camp and make donations (he also matched the donations given). Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in July for $50 or less.

t’s that time again where you decorate yourself in America’s colors, eat grilled foods like it’s going out of style, and spend your entire day outdoors, preferably on your bike and near the beach. Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4 this year and Delray really comes alive to celebrate. The Delray Beach July 4th Celebration is located on A1A and Atlantic Avenue and everyone is invited to enjoy back-to-back live music, outdoor dining, family activities including water activities, creative arts, face painting, sidewalk chalk, photo booth and more, in addition to a beer garden for the adults. This is one of the times where the Avenue is packed with people and the people watching is as fun as the actual activities. Be sure to grab a good seat for the fireworks show because the sky is full of glittered shapes in different colors and sizes and it’s definitely a show you don’t want to miss. The fireworks go off at 9 p.m. from the north end of the

es, we’re back in that time of the year again where the environment feels like a sauna, your skin feels like it tans inside your car, and you can’t drink enough water to satiate your thirst. The Dog Days of Summer, from July 3 to August 11, is the name for the most sultry period of the summer. But, as Floridians, we know how to deal. Throw on your favorite cotton dress, grab some adult lemonade and head outdoors. Thankfully we have the Hot Summer Nights outdoor concert series where we can gather every Friday in July. The shows start at 8 p.m. and even though you’re encouraged to bring lawn chairs, the organizers guarantee you’ll be dancing the whole night. The schedule includes: Higher Ground on July 3, Mike Mineo on July 10, Flavor on July 17, Libido on July 24 and The Clique on July 31. All concerts are weather permitting, there is a suggested donation at the entrance, and there is a cash bar and food trucks available. Pickleball Open House and Demonstration
It’s been called the sweet sport with the sour name, but with an estimated half a million active players worldwide, Pickleball is growing locally thanks to the Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Department. Now with the National Parks and Recreation month celebration coming in July, you’ll be able to see in action this exciting sport designed for all ages. A Pickleball demonstration and class will be offered as part of the month-long celebration at the Delray
Beach Community Center on Saturday July 18, along with open court time for current players. Playing time is from 1 pm to 3:00 pm. Pickleball is a mini-tennis-like game that was created in 1965 to provide a sport for the entire family. A combination of Ping-Pong, tennis and badminton, Pickleball can be played indoors or outdoors. Played on a smaller court than tennis, the game lends itself to people of all ages and skill levels. t’s summer time and the movies are biggies, as in blockbusters. The month of July starts with two of them.
July 1 Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as Terminator model T-800 in “Terminator: Genisys,” directed by Alan Taylor. The setup is John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of human resistance against Skynet machines, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to the year 1984 to protect Connor’s mother Sarah (Emelia Clarke) from Terminator assassins. Sarah is an expert fighter assisted by old T-800 (Schwarzenegger) against the new model T-1000 (Lee Byung-hun). Good ol’ J.K. Simmons is Det. O’Brien. The movie was shot in New Orleans and San Francisco and is said to be the first of a new trilogy. Here is one for the ladies. The beefcake boys are back in “Magic Mike XXL.” Three years after Magic Mike (Channing Tatum) gave up stripping, he gets the remaining Kings of Tampa crew together for one last big blowout in Myrtle Beach, SC. Gregory Jacobs, assistant director on “Oceans 12,” leads this sequel. Additional male cast is Matt Bomer, Donald Glover, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash, Stephen “Twitch” Boss and Joe Maganiello as Big Dick Richie.

July 10 Those lovable “Minions” are back in a movie of their own. Technically “Minions” could be called “Despicable Me 3,” for it continues characters created by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud from the first one in 2010. This time villainturned-good-guy adoptive dad Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, is gone, replaced by a new villain, Scarlett Overkill, voiced by Sandra Bullock. Minions Stuart, Kevin, and Bob require a new villain they can blindly follow in this CG-animated, directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balden. Their search takes them from Antarctica to New York City in the 1960s in a script by Brian Lynch (“Puss and Boots”). Others in the mix are Michael Keaton, Jon Hamm, Allison Janney and Jennifer Saunders as Queen Elizabeth II.
July 17 Speaking of titles that tell the story, we have “Trainwreck,” which sadly has been happening a lot lately. Oh wait, this is an R-rated comedy, directed by Judd Apatow, who for the first time did not write his script. That writer would be star Amy Schuster, who stars as a career woman named Amy; a successful magazine writer. From the time she was a little girl, Amy had the idea drilled in her head by her unconventional dad (Colin Quinn) that monogamy is overrated. The idea is put to the test when Amy starts to fall for the subject of her article on big shot sports doctor Aaron Connors, played by Bill Hader. Spoofing himself in a cameo appearance is LeBron James.
July 24 “Paper Towns” is a coming-of-age story based on a 2008 novel by John Green, author of “The Fault in Our Stars.” Quentin (Nat Wolff) and his enigmatic mystery-loving neighbor Margo (Cara Delevigne) embark on an all-night adventure through their home town in which Margo disappears and must be found by deciphering cryptic clues. Jake Schreier directs. Another mystery is brewing in “The Vatican Tapes.” Angela Homes (Olivia Taylor Dudley), 27, cuts her finger ac-
cidentally and is rushed to a hospital emergency room. Instead of getting better she starts acting erratically. People close to her are adversely affected. Could she be possessed? Two priests from the Vatican are called in to perform an exorcism. Then all Hell breaks loose. Mark Neveldine (“Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”) directs. Michael Pena is Father Lozano. Djimon Hounson is Vicar Imani. Dougray Scott is Roger Holmes and Kathleen Roberts is Dr. Richards. July 29 Many of us are on “Vacation” this time of year. What could go wrong? If you saw the 1983 John Hughes comedy classic, you realize just about anything. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldenstein, who wrote “Horrible Bosses” and its sequel, helm this update remake of the Griswold family’s ill-fated journey to Walley World. The grown-up Rusty Griswold is played by Ed Helms, who wants the perfect gift for wife Debbie (Christina Applegate). You guessed it: a cross-country trip to the fabled amusement park. Original mom and dad, Clark (Chevy Chase) and Ellen Griswold (Beverly D’Angelo) make cameo appearances. Leslie Mann plays the gown-up Audrey Griswold and Chris Hemsworth is her husband, anchorman Stone Crandall.
July 31 Go ahead, admit it: you just love Tom Cruise. No? Then you won’t care about “Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation,” which is the fifth in a series of international adventures starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, head of the elite IMF (Impossible Mission Force) first created for television by Bruce Geller. Don’t scoff. This is the most successful movie series ever, with grosses of over $2 billion. Director and frequent Cruise collaborator (“Jack Reacher”) Christopher McQuarrie wrote this yarn about the sinister Syndicate, headed by a shadowy character played by Sean Harris, who wants to destroy the IMF. Back on Hunt’s team are Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, newcomer Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa, and for his fifth time as Luther Stickell, Ving Rhames.

It is said that “knowledge is power” and of all the things to know in life, the most valuable is.. Simply knowing yourself. There are no technical manuals to knowing yourself, no shortcuts, and no one can do it for you. This is probably why so few people have accomplished it.
In 2010 I had decided that the best way for my 10 year old son and I to get to know each other, and for us to better know ourselves, was to spend a few months hiking the Appalachian Trail. The close companionship, lack of distractions and long days with nothing to do but walk and talk, proved to be well suited for that task. Before we set out, I made sure that my son understood that there was no geographic goal in mind, no expectations, no pressure; we would remain on the trail until he no longer wanted to be there. Our goal was to simply learn about hiking, the country we love and most importantly, each other. Within the first week of our Appalachian Trail adventure we fell completely in love with hiking and set our sights on thru-hiking to Maine. Each day was filled with dreams of the trail ahead and beyond. The PCT, the CDT and joining the ranks of the most respected of all hikers, “Triple Crowners.” The lessons learned during our AT hike were far more numerous and detailed than had been anticipated. Every day brought something new; A new mountain to climb, a new river to ford, a new view of the path ahead. Each day was its own unique adventure. We tried to get as much out of each day as we could physically, emotionally and spiritually. We climbed every fire tower, paused at every lookout, and
walked every white blaze. Each day reaffirming our self-proclaimed motto “the last one up Katahdin wins.” On October 14th, 2010, we stood beside a frozen sign that read “Mt. Katahdin, northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail”, and with teary eyes and confused hearts, we began the hardest part of our trek, the journey home. The following year, 2011, we had every intention of continuing our quest for the “Triple Crown” by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. However, a six month hike, a long promised high school graduation present of a European tour and one daughter already in college all proved too much for our budget. We then adopted our “every other year plan.” Isn’t it funny how some things in life, like our “every other year plan,” born of necessity turn out to be so important and essential to success? We consoled ourselves to working, training and planning for a 2012 PCT hike. In 2012 we hit the ground running, and the time spent over the previous year, running, cycling and swimming paid off in a big way. On January 2, 2012, we departed Key West and began hiking the Florida Trail to prepare our feet, backs and minds for the upcoming adventure that would test us over
the next ten months. In April, we flew to San Diego where we made our way to the Mexican border, and on April 18th began walking north on the Pacific Crest Trail. From the beginning this was very different from our AT hike. Standing at the Mexican border looking north, with the intention of thru-hiking our way to Canada was a complete departure from our previous mindset. 700 miles of desert, snow packed passes and blue lakes of the High Sierras; giant sequoias and ancient chains of volcanic mountains were all constant reminders that this was not the AT; this was not the east coast. This was a completely different and unique adventure all of its own. September, 21st, 2012 found us at the Canadian border looking thin, frail and slightly malnourished but extremely happy. With several thousand miles under our belt (and on our feet!!) we were feeling a little less than excited about our usual training routine to prepare for the Continental Divide Trail. We needed a break and something new. On our PCT hike we had heard tales of a coast to coast bike route, and the idea of an adventure that involved NO WALKING sounded like just the thing we needed. After a little research we discovered the “Southern Tier”, a back roads bicycle route that travels from St.
Augustine, Florida to San Diego, California. Within weeks we had our maps and began planning our trip. With our now extensive backpacking experience, the trip fell together with very little effort. In February, 2013, we bought two bicycles, four racks, and eight panniers (saddle bags for bicycles). We walked our bicycles out our front door, rode east on Atlantic Avenue, made a left on A1A and headed north toward St. Augustine. One week later we reached St. Augustine where we made another left and headed west toward California. After ten weeks we were watching the sun set over California with our feet in the Pacific Ocean. At that point our feet were well rested and fully recouped from our PCT hike, it was now our backsides that needed a rest! From our first weeks of hiking the AT we had heard trail rumors, camp fire tales, and outright horror stories of the CDT, the Continental Divide Trail. The stories continued on the PCT, following us everywhere we went. Everyone seemed to know of the CDT but no one knew anyone that had actually hiked it. This made planning for it seem much more difficult. There ARE people who have hiked the CDT, and after a great deal of research we found everything we
needed to plan our hike. The CDT was however, by far the toughest trail we’ve hiked, in every way! The planning, logistics, and execution were twice as hard as all the other trails combined. We feel so fortunate that we hiked these trails in the order that we did. Without the knowledge and experience gained on the AT and PCT, we truly believe we would not have been able to successfully hike the CDT. Every day the CDT earned its slogan “Embrace the Brutality.” Each day was a trial, a test and a blessing. The CDT has no signs, no blazes and no trail to follow. You have to navigate your way across open terrain, over mountains and through seemingly endless forests. Day to day, pass to pass, mountain to mountain you make your way north, with an eye on the weather and your mind on the calendar. “Canada before winter”, and winter comes early in Canada. So many things can go wrong on the CDT, so when you get to Glacier National Park in northern Montana the anticipation mounts and you start to get a little giddy… The end is in sight. Three days of heavy snow brought us back to reality, “it’s not over till we reach the border.” On September, 12th, 2014 we reached the Canadian border and cel-
ebrated with a photo at the northern terminus monument wearing the traditional cardboard “Burger King” crowns, symbolizing completion of the “Triple Crown.” When people compare the first photo from the first trail, to the last photo of the last trail, they’ll see the height difference between a ten year old and a fifteen year old, or maybe a few more wrinkles and a little less hair of a fifty-five year old. What they won’t see is what it took to get there. They won’t see the good times, the hard times, the tears, the songs and the hugs. They’ll miss the campfires, the blisters, the frozen hands and the laughter. They can’t see the lessons learned, the scars that were earned, the endless sunsets, and the promises of a new day. Regardless of what people can or can’t see, trust me when I tell you that beyond all the things we have seen, beyond all the places we have been, beyond all the good people we have met, the greatest knowledge there is to be gained comes from… simply knowing yourself. More people have died on Mt. Everest than have hiked the “Triple Crown”. There will be no parades, no medals and no ribbons but we are proud to be two among those few.

Facet Syndrome:
A Major Cause of Back and Neck Pain

Shockingly, 8 out of 10 Americans will suffer from neck and low back pain sometime during their life, with facet syndrome accounting for a large percentage of these symptoms. A recent study on low back pain showed involvement of one or more facet joints in 79% of the patients.
Many individuals with facet syndrome will often notice low back stiffness that becomes worse when sitting for long periods of time or when they first wake up in the morning and begin to move. They also may have trouble turning their head side to side or at times need to turn their entire upper body because it is too painful. Even bending forwards and backwards or walking upright can be very difficult. Facet syndrome can present itself as well-localized, dull or burning pain in the neck and low back, but that is not always the case. Lumbar facet syndrome can radiate into the buttock region, pelvis or thighs rarely traveling below the knee, while cervical facet syndrome can produce pain in the shoulder, arms, mid back and can also cause severe headaches. Most often individuals will blame their stiffness and pain on such things as their mattress, pillow or stress. They may even think that it is “normal” to feel this way. Articular facets are bony projections on the superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portion on the backside of the vertebras of the spinal column. These areas interlock with each other making up the zygapophyseal joint or “z-joint” which promote spinal support and are the key components to insure proper spinal motion. Like any other joint within the body, these areas experience constant repetitive movements where they interlock and become susceptible to injury 46 July 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
and other degenerative conditions. Conditions such as Arthritis, Overuse Syndrome and Stereotypic Movement Disorders are some of the most common. Facet joints are incased in a synovial capsule which supplies proper nutrients to the joint and provides the “meniscoid” structure with lubrication needed to insure smooth gliding over one another, much like the meniscus in our knees. These joints are in constant motion throughout our life and can become worn and traumatized. As these joints become worn, they no longer provide the proper lubrication they need and can be-
come inflamed and irritated, leading to Facet Joint Osteoarthritis in the future. Bony projections begin to form within the joint causing it to become hypertrophied (enlarged) and inflamed, limiting an individual’s range of motion and producing pain. The main focus when treating any facet syndrome is to restore proper motion and function to the joint along with decreasing pain and inflammation. Conservative treatment options should be the first choice for an individual suffering from this condition. Chiropractic spinal manipulation is one of the best ways to restore that lost mobility in the spinal column. Non-surgical spinal decompression and flexion-distraction can be a gentle and painless way to decompress the facet joints and aid in stretching tight musculature in the neck and low back. Maintaining a healthy mouth is positively linked to having a healthy baby!
Congratulations on this exciting and busy time in your life! There is so much to think about right now – nutrition, baby clothes, pregnancy books, how to pay for college! – but don’t forget about your teeth and gums. It may be easy to overlook your mouth when you’re thinking about your growing belly, but it’s equally important to maintain a healthy mouth while you’re maintaining a healthy body. Brushing and flossing contributes to your overall health, and if your mouth is healthy, it’s more likely that your baby’s mouth will be healthy. Your body and mouth will experience many changes during pregnancy. Due to the increase in hormones during pregnancy, particularly an increase in estrogen and progesterone, your gums are more prone to bacterial accumulation. This accumulation can lead to gingivitis, which presents itself as painful, red-swollen gums that may bleed, and generally begins to surface as early as the second month. Pregnancy gingivitis, if left untreated, can progress to periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. The good news is that routine dental treatment can be performed safely at any time during pregnancy so you can avoid this with proper care! Your dental health also plays an important role in your ability to deliver a full-term, healthy weight baby. Research suggests a link between pre-term, low birth weight babies and gingivitis because excessive bacteria can enter the bloodstream through your gums. If this happens, the bacteria can travel to the uterus, triggering the production of the chemical prostaglandins, which is suspected to induce premature labor. Furthermore, untreated dental disease can lead to pain, infections and unnecessary exposure to medications, any of which could harm the developing fetus. Pregnant women are also at risk for developing pregnancy tumors, which are inflammatory, non-cancerous growths that develop when swollen gums become irritated. Normally, the tumors are left alone and usually shrink on their own after the baby’s birth, but if a tumor is uncomfortable and interferes with chewing, brushing or flossing, the dentist may decide to remove it. In addition to examining for oral disease, dentists may notice dental erosion in pregnant women, due to increased acid in the mouth following morning sickness. To neutralize this acid, pregnant women should rinse their mouth with a tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in a cup of water. The teeth should be brushed only after the mouth has been rinsed and the acid has been neutralized to prevent further damage to the enamel. The simple solution to preventing problems is to visit your dentist before you plan to become pregnant or if you believe you’re pregnant. The dentist will perform an exam, thoroughly check your teeth and gums, and have a hygienist clean your teeth. Pregnant women can also take healthy oral care steps at home and include brushing with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day and after each meal when possible; flossing thoroughly each day; rinsing her mouth after morning sickness; and enjoying good nutrition (particularly plenty of Vitamin C and B12) that will help keep the oral cavity strong and healthy. Good daily care is vital in controlling plaque, which will also reduce gum irritation and decrease the likelihood of pregnancy tumors. If you are already pregnant, it’s not too late! You can visit the dentist during your second trimester. If you have any of the above conditions, it is safe to seek treatment while you are pregnant. In most cases, a dental

We were all brought up thinking that we should eat 3 meals a daybreakfast, lunch and dinner, yet today most people don’t even eat breakfast! Well, times are changing and now we are hearing that the new and effective way to lose weight is to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day.
There are SO many reasons why 5, or even 6 meals a day is the ideal way to eat. Now, you may be thinking that 5 meals is too much food but when I say “meals” I don’t mean the large meals we are all so accustomed to these days. With outrageous restaurant proportions, and the “bigger is better” mentality most people think of meals as a mini feast. The human body can only process a certain amount of food at one time so there is no need for such large meals when instead we should be consuming smaller snack-like meals. Eating every 3-4 hours is the preferred method in order to maintain steady blood sugar levels which will avoid overeating. If you go too long without eating you will become so hungry that at your next meal you will likely overeat, resulting in higher calorie consumption overall. Not to mention that after 4 hours your body goes into “starvation mode” meaning the next thing you eat will be stored as fat rather than burned off as energy. coffee doesn’t count) and being so ravenous come noon that you stuff your face with a huge sandwich, bag of chips and a soda; have a well-balanced breakfast followed by a mid-morning snack and a sensible lunch. Think protein shake with 1/2 cup of berries, followed by a couple hardboiled eggs and then a green salad with grilled chicken and 1/4 avocado.
Your day should look something like this: 7:00am Breakfast 10:30am Mid-morning snack 1pm Lunch 4:00pm Afternoon snack 7:00pm Dinner 9:00pm Evening snack (optional)

That’s what attracts many of the regulars (and guests) to this Cigar Lounge in Delray Beach. The other thing is the camaraderie and shared passion of those who frequent this throwback to the speakeasy days of wine, whiskey and song. Though the musical notes are most prolific on weekends on the outdoor patio, the good times keep on rolling every day of the week. Just ask Ed Hall. “I just about live at Smoke Inn Delray. I’m here three or four nights a week to smoke cigars, watch sports and hang out with friends. I started smoking cigars because my wife didn’t want me to smoke cigarettes. Smoke Inn has always been a safe port in the storm. A place where cigar connoisseurs can enjoy a good smoke, a fine glass of wine (or whiskey) and great conversation.
There are a lot of folks like Hall who covet a good cigar and premium libation at Smoke Inn Delray. They also enjoy the live music on Friday and Saturday nights and the cozy atmosphere at the authentic retro bar and comfy leather chairs. There’s also an impressive collection of wine, craft beer, whiskey, cognac, bourbon and fine scotch. But the real news is that owner Vincent Prestigiacomo (or Vinnie as he is called) has teamed up with childhood friend Manny Padillo to co-manage Smoke Inn Delray. The two have been friends for 34 years and go back as far as the first grade. “Vinnie and I have been friends since we were five-years-old and we’ve literally grown up together. We even joined the military at the same time,” said Manny Padillo,

who was voted Airman of the Year in 2000. Manny was an account executive for a website development firm and has a laid back demeanor that could diffuse an explosive. It’s easy to see why patrons are drawn to his magnetism and sincerity. “I have had a lifetime of experience working with entrepreneurs like Vinnie. But the best part is that we are like family to each other and this family atmosphere spills over to our customers. Everyone who comes here is appreciated and considered part of our family. This is a very relaxed atmosphere and people feel so comfortable it’s like their own home.” For Ira Fox Smoke Inn Delray is his second home. The admissions coordinator for a rehab facility in Delray comes to Smoke Inn Delray five or six days a week and relishes his relationship with Vinnie. “I have been coming here since Vinnie took over this place two years ago. I come here to smoke a cigar and sit in the most comfortable chairs in South Florida. I also like the way the lounge is set up so everyone can talk to each other and converse about different subjects. There’s wonderful sense of camaraderie here.” You could say the same thing about Vinnie and Manny. They both work seven days a week and are devoted to their customers and to the essence of serving premium liquor and a diverse selection of fine cigars. On Thursday nights they have poker tournaments, Wednesday night is Trivia Night (with free prizes, drinks and cigars) and on Friday nights Bob McDonald plays guitar and sings very cool tunes. Well known blues singer and harmonica great Rockin Jake and Gyorgy Lakatos can be heard jamming on the outdoor patio on Saturday nights as well. Sports reigns supreme at Smoke Inn Delray. There’s always a game playing on one of their large flat screen TV’s and during football season they have food on the patio (cooked by Vinnie’s mom) special drinks and a festive vibe. “The cigar business is a growing business because it’s become more acceptable to smoke a cigar in public. People come here from all backgrounds - it’s a great place to network or get some work done,” said Manny.

Manny is right. Often times during the day customers come in with their lap tops to check emails, do paperwork or keep up with the times. But when night falls it gets more lively and celebratory. Salon Resta may look like a typical South Florida salon at first glance, but it’s anything but. The art on the walls is colorful and eclectic and the vibe is somewhat visual and ethereal.
That’s a good thing. Because owner Eric Perna has an artist’s eye and a penchant for looking at each client as one would a work of art. “We think of ourselves as artists and hair is our medium,” said the painter, sculpture and musician who cuts hair the way Michelangelo did ceilings. Salon Resta has grown in the past six and a half years by catering to their client’s desire to look their best. Before cutting, styling or coloring hair, Perna and his staff make sure they have a vision that encapsulates the best features of their clients’ facial structure and lifestyle. And they must be doing something right. “I cut hair yesterday for 10 hours and worked on 11 people,” said Perna, who has also become somewhat of a pied piper (and conduit) between the art community, music community and beauty industry. Perna has studied at Vidal Sassoon, Tigi and Rusk and his visual acuity is perfect when it comes to maximizing the beauty of his clients. His canvas does vary though. at the Brazilian Embassy and in galleries in Miami’s Arts District. Because Perna believes in the importance of community he recently started a project called Resta-Style. The first phase of this ongoing program is one that highlights local Delray artists. Perna did this by cutting and styling the hair of nine artists from Artists Alley in Delray Beach. After the work was done each artist was photographed and made a part of this ongoing art project. “In order to strengthen my business I have to strengthen the community. We are going to cut and style hair (at no charge) for city workers of Delray, Fitness pros, bartenders and other people whose work affects the city of Delray.” Perna may be at his cutting chair five days a week from sun up to sun down, but he has not forsaken the community one bit. Salon Resta hosts live music events, jam sessions, fashion and art shows, charity events and other special events inside and outside the salon. Salon Resta is moving to Federal High-
way just four blocks south of Atlantic Avenue. This will bring the crew closer to the vortex of the Delray Beach art and culture scene. “We produce a lot more than hair, we produce a lifestyle. But when we do cut and style hair it is about having a vision. You have to have a vision of style to give a precise haircut. It has to flatter the face.” It seems that Perna and his staff’s sense of style seems to meet their models desire for perfection. “Eric Perna and the stylists at Salon Resta are truly the best of the best. When I returned to Delray from New York, I was unable to find a stylist with the skills to cut my hair to the standard of excellence I’d grown accustomed to. Not only is Eric masterful with short hair, his innate creativity allows for unique hairstyles that match who you are, and how you want to express yourself through style. He brings passion into the salon and surrounds himself with an incredibly talented team of professionals. When it comes to looking good, I know I am in the best hands at Salon Resta,” said model and artist Abbey Funk.
Lori Sturgess and husband Matt were also part of the Resta-Style project. “It’s hard for Matt to get a good haircut. Some people make it too short or too long but Eric is a true artist and it comes through in his work. Eric and his team are fabulous and right on the cutting edge of trends,” said Lori, who works with Matt in their photography and Video Studio in Artist Alley. When not doing these artistic venues Perna and his staff at Salon Resta do what comes naturally to them. They offer hair-
cuts, blowouts or styling (for men or women), hair coloring, extensions, eyebrow and lip wax, color correction and wedding makeup, haircuts and hair styling. They also do trial hair and makeup sessions before the big day and grooming for the groom as well. Perna and his staff are thrilled to be a part of this melding of art and beauty. As someone who digs deep into the landscape and architecture of his environment Perna is proud of the photo shoot and its ability to reign in all art forms. “The photo shoot

DELRAY YACHT CRUISES A Day Of Adventure And Serenity

Times goes fast when you’re having a good time. Joe Reardon could have told you that. The owner and captain of Delray Yacht Cruises has seen the last 12 years fly by – sort of.
More specifically, it’s cruised by. That’s because Joe, wife Kerry and sister-inlaw Meghan have been welcoming guests aboard their pristine luxury yachts for the past 12 years. Though the boats (appropriately named The Lady Atlantic and The Lady Delray) are docked alongside Veterans Park they carry a historical reference point that goes deep into the personal psyche of locals and tourists. Guests charter them for private parties – weddings, proms, Bar Mitzvahs, retirement parties and rehearsal dinners – and the public can join in this seafaring experience almost every day as well. “We have public cruises most every day up or down the intracoastal waterway. For some of our guests it’s like a vacation day. We’ve had some people come on the boat for special cruises 20 and 30 times. They become like old friends,” said Joe. It’s easy to see why tourists and locals look forward to a day at sea. You get to cruise by outstanding architectural homesteads (and Mother Nature’s glory) that border the intracoastal waterway while floating like a dolphin above water. Some cruises head south to Boca Raton others leave Delray Beach and go Northbound toward Manalapan and Boynton Beach. There’s another reason Delray Yacht 58 July 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Cruises are growing more popular every year. The boats are beautiful, well maintained (with the utmost care) and the staff aims to please. The 105-foot Lady Atlantic has three levels with a sky deck, rich wood paneling, a fireplace, indoor and outdoor seating and can hold up to 150 people. The Lady Delray is 90-feet long, accommodates 120 people and makes itself the conduit for easy breezy sightseeing and savvy cuisine by Chef Jerwaine Fisher. Some are elaborate affairs with grand gestures of enormity (almost any trim or interior can be brought on board) and others are simple affairs with romance as the ethereal display. “We have brought in elaborate chair coverings, flowers, specialty linens and entertainment for wedding parties. We had one family that used sparklers as a send off the bride and groom. We also had a request for a photo machine, so we got one,” adds Joe. Another popular cruise is the Sunday Brunch Cruise. There’s food, a narrated tour of the points of interest and soothing sights of the sea on this first class yacht (think the Kennedys). The Steel Band cruise is a sunset cruise that has all the verve and excitement of a surprise visit from a long lost friend. It’s one of our favorite cruises because of the sunset, the subtle casualty of the guests and the illustrious music that floats through the yacht decks. hen in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are 66 July 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments is instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more

He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when
so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within. Ahhh… Brief Therapy

I cringe inwardly when I hear: “I’ve had therapy for years”. My gut churns, and I wonder what was going on so long. Don’t get me wrong…I’ve worked with clients on serious issues that have taken time.
Overcoming the effects of emotional trauma, it’s critical to move skillfully with patience. Awareness and healing are never linear events. Progress is rarely constant. But experience has taught me resolution can be rapid and rarely must years pass before life gets better. Often in a few sessions, I’ve seen some pretty exciting things happen that helped clients get on with living. Here are a few secrets from that process: Permission – Negative parental messages float around in our heads beneath our consciousness. (“You’re such a noisy child! Why can’t you behave!?!”) Unspoken “family rules” from our childhoods still guide our behavior in ways we don’t realize. (“Go to college, girl, but don’t try to be so smart you won’t attract a doctor or lawyer for a husband!”). Often in a few quiet, reflective conversations, clients gain permission to discard these useless messages and adopt more empowering ones. (“My ADD is a unique trait and a skill, not a liability”. “I can be a wife, mother and a lawyer”. “I don’t need the approval of everyone to survive and thrive”.) Awareness – In the storms, chaos and drama of a normal life, it is not uncommon to take habits, behaviors and attitudes for granted. Humans crave

routines as a basic safety need, and in those routines, we drift from the here and now. We aren’t present. A recent client shared with me this script for her life: “Get up, work like a slave, get home at 7, pour a scotch, wolf a quick dinner and then crash. What family? What weight problem? What friends?” In the rare atmosphere of a coaching session, clients gain fresh perspective. Objectivity emerges. They see the rut. They get out of the rut. They move into life. Encouragement – We need each other. We humans are pack animals and thrive in close contact with other humans. We need a sense of caring and connectedness. This is the essence of spirituality. Being part of something not me. Bigger than me. Telling our stories in a safe place to listening, caring others is a primal instinct first expressed when we cried out at birth. Some of us grew up in families that ignored us. Or expected too much. Or too little. Just because we missed what we needed then doesn’t mean it’s forever beyond us. Congress Avenue Vision Takes Shape with New Task Force By linda brown

It’s been almost a decade since then Delray Beach Mayor Jeff Perlman received a call no mayor wants to get.

Office Depot, the city’s largest private employer and a solid corporate citizen with donations to local schools and sponsorships of city events, was pulling up stakes and leaving Delray for a new corporate headquarters in Boca Raton. “I had a very good relationship with the CEO at the time, Bruce Nelson,” recalls Perlman, now editor of Atlantic Ave Magazine. “So I got a heads up courtesy call about the decision. Mr. Nelson said it was nothing against Delray, but he had a strong desire to have his headquarter operations under one roof, in a new building. He didn’t like how his corporate staff was spread out into three buildings in a campus like setting. We didn’t have much in the way of office product to compete with a new building, so we lost them.” But rather than fret, Perlman, city staff and commissioners at the time decided to turn lemons into lemonade. They decided to move forward with an ambitious plan to rethink the 40 plus acre Office Depot headquarters, envisioning a mixed-use campus that would allow for office space, workforce housing and commercial amenities such as coffee shops and restaurants. Perlman ended up taking the concept to the Florida Public Officials Design Institute, a now defunct program that was run out of the Jupiter campus of FAU. There, working with a team of planners, urban designers and university staff he was encouraged to re-imagine and ultimately rezone the Congress Avenue corridor from the Boca line to Atlantic Avenue. The corridor would allow for a mix of uses, workforce housing, commercial and office in an effort to create a job creating corporate corridor. The plan also called for taking advantage of a nearby Tri-Rail stop, linear parks
to dress up the appearance of the roadway and a trolley service that would link the corridor with the downtown enabling workers on Congress to enjoy Atlantic Avenue and get back to work without having to drive and worry about parking. The plan was adopted by the commission, the corridor was rezoned and then term limits, the recession, and other priorities got in the way. Fast forward to 2015 and now Congress Avenue is back in the conversation in a big way. During the recent municipal elections, virtually all of the candidates voiced support for bringing new life to Congress Avenue. Now a task force has been formed to jumpstart growth along the corridor with the hope of creating an economic engine to complement Atlantic Avenue. A few meetings have been held attracting an impressive array of property owners, citizens, city staff, commercial real estate brokers and chamber of commerce officials. Also in attendance, Perlman has been tapped by Mayor Cary Glickstein to chair the task force and is working closely with city Economic Development Director Joan Goodrich on the process. So far, the group has agreed to tackle the
appearance of the corridor and there appears to be strong consensus to urge that Congress Avenue become a “complete street”, adding amenities including bike lanes. In addition, the group—given wide berth by the Mayor—has agreed to look at the entire five mile section of Congress from the Boca to the Boynton line. Zoning will be reviewed and careful attention will be paid to development patterns to ensure that the growth patterns adopted along the corridor will not be a drain on city budgets. The group was heavily influenced by a recent Town Hall Lecture Series in which guest speakers Joe Minicozzi of Asheville, N.C. based Urban 3 and Chuck Marohn of Strong Towns delivered a sobering analysis on development patterns and their costs. Basically, car centric policies and suburban sprawl yield little financial benefit to cities while demanding expensive services. Tight, compact development, often referred to as Smart Growth costs less to service and actually provides more economic advantages to local governments. “That level of thinking really influenced a few of us,” said Perlman. “It doesn’t make sense to adopt development patterns that end up putting cities in the red.”
Jim Smith, chairman of the advocacy group SAFE (Safety as Floridians Expect) has been an active task force member. He sees a group opportunity to work with the county to rethink the county offices at 345 S. Congress Avenue and to take more advantage of the Tri Rail Station nearby. In addition, Smith and Human Powered Delray’s Jim Chard and Bruce Bastian are strong advocates of complete streets and less reliance on cars. The property owners on the task force emphasize that they have invested in the corridor because of Delray’s brand, which has been vastly improved as a result of Atlantic Avenue’s success. Grover/Curlew which has purchased three buildings on the corridor are bullish on the future and say the area is attractive to companies and young people who might not be able to afford high prices downtown. Veteran commercial real estate professional Keith O’Donnell has also been active. He is busy combing through zoning to see if any barriers to investment can be removed. “This is an exciting project,” he said. “It’s great to see the key players come together. Each year, Atlantic Ave magazine is proud to shine a spotlight on outstanding students who are chosen for Dare 2 Be Great scholarships.
This year’s class was especially strong showing with many local students overcoming tremendous adversity to excel in the classroom and in the community. In addition to cash awards, winners are mentored by Delray Beach residents and business owners. The goal is to encourage students to come back to Delray and pay it forward right here at home. Here’s a look at the Class of 2015: Eamonn Byrnes: Graduated from FAU High School and will be attending FAU Honors College to pursue a degree in Neuroscience. He learned that a failure is really a lesson learned. He found this after failing a vocal audition. While his audition was not a success he took it as a valuable learning experience. Eamonn is an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. He loves to volunteer and he lives by the quote “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” by Mahatma Gandhi. Brianna Cleckley: Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and will be attending Florida State University to pursue a career in Nursing. While she lost her father at an early age, she decided she could not give up. This situation allowed her to grow and realize that a college education would be one of the most important accomplishments in her life. Her quote that she lives by is “a mind is a terrible thing to waste.” Shaaz Feldman: Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and will be attending the University of Florida to pursue a career in Mathematics. Shaaz has strong leadership skills and was the Drum Captain of Atlantic’s marching band. He is also among other things a certified Pilates instructor. cally inspire the youth of Delray Beach.” Jessica Hyland: Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and will be attending George Washington University to pursue a degree in Political Science and or international relations. She loves school and was ranked in the top 5% of her graduating class. Community service and volunteering is her passion. Her father passed away which showed her life is not always going to be easy and to put your priorities into perspective. The motto she lives by come from Isaac Newton: “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Jessica Louis: Graduated from Village Academy and will be attending FAU to pursue a degree in Engineering. She has a strong tie to the Delray Students First mentoring group and has emerged as a leader and role model for other younger students. In Environmen-
tal Science she learned that there are limitless innovations to solve the ills of the environment and she refuse to believe that the environment has been destroyed beyond human ability to restore it. She wishes to come back to Delray Beach to support students living below the poverty line. Bethany Malzman: Graduated from Spanish River high School and will be attending Dartmouth to pursue a degree in Business and Economics. Community service became the focus of her life and she was involved with the Key Club and Kiwanis. She was selected as one of the six students that made the AP Global Challenge Team as they saw her capability of working with like-minded students to come up with a solution to world problems. She was touched by a woman who reminded her “God would never give you something you cannot handle.”
Jean Tony Monecla Jr. : Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and will be attending FAU pursuing a degree in Biology or Computer Science. He has overcome many challenges in life living in a crime infested neighborhood. However he overcame these obstacles through his community service efforts. As a Committee Chairman for the South County Nulites he was able to break out of his shell and has succeeded academically. He wants others to know that no matter where you come from as long as you have inner drive and people who support you, you can accomplish anything. Kaitlyn Osorio: Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and will be attending University of Central Florida to seek a degree in Graphic Design, Visual Effects with a minor in Marketing. Visual Arts provided her the confidence needed to become the VP of the National Honor Society. She wishes to expand her education by traveling to other countries and inspire youth and all generations about how art can save lives. She lives by a quote from George Burns “I’d rather be a failure at something I love then a success at something I hate.” Marilyn Ramirez: Graduated from Atlan-
tic Community High School and will be attending FAU pursuing a degree in Nursing or Pre-Med. She became very involved with the “No Place for Hate”, an anti-bulling prevention program. She lost her mother, however her strong family support has helped her academically and spiritually. Her dream is to become a doctor with a practice in Delray Beach. Rachel Reizburg: Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and will be attending Northwestern University pursuing a degree in Theater. Her love of art and performing started at a very early age and she would perform at the dining room table. She became very involved with the Arts Garage and helping Banyan Creek Elementary School’s drama club. Rachel lost her father several years ago and realized that Instead of being defeated by hardship you can choose to focus on the joy of life! La’Quesha Swain: Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and she will be attending Spelman College to seek a degree in Psychology. She did not let the complicated negative aspects of her life define who she is. Her environment shaped her into a responsible intelligent African-American who was
selected by the Urban League of Palm Beach County to speak in front of 500 people. Her quote that she lives by is “Love is my favorite thing to give and receive and I plan on spreading it throughout my community.” Holden Taylor: Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and will be attending Indiana University pursing a degree in Business Administration. He spent his summers working at a sleepaway camp for developmentally disabled young adults. Through this experience he has learned how to be patient and persistent and gained confidence in himself by pushing aside self-doubt and by moving forward. He is a budding entrepreneur. Jabari Walker: Graduated from Atlantic Community High School and will be attending FAMU to seek a degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering. He participated in the Eagle Nest Construction Academy. Growing up in a single parent household, he credits his success to the support he received from his mother. She taught him morals and to respect others. He lives by the saying “I know there is no obstacle that can’t be removed, appreciate the people in your life and make them proud”.

A Star In Our Midst

Oscar Wilde once said, “With age comes wisdom.” And in most cases this might be true – unless you’ve met Kilburn Sherman.
The 27-year-old accountant, businessman, community leader and family man is knowledgeable beyond his years and has a glimmering sense of propriety when it comes to his earthly mission. This innate humility and passion for all he does didn’t come from Anthony Robbins or Richard Branson. It came from a lifetime of being surrounded by good role models and mentors who instilled in him a sense of right and wrong (and a stellar work ethic). As early as eight or nine-years-old he was working alongside his dad washing and waxing a large private yacht docked in Palm Beach. Though he learned a lot about this sea faring vessel he also gained a love of the water and all that flows within its ethereal grasp. He also met his first mentor. “My dad Andy worked for a very successful businessman who spent time talking to me about the importance of working hard and getting a good education. When I asked him about investing he would say, ‘I’ve had a lot of winners and losers. But a loser isn’t a failure if you learned something from it. Often times losing is the best teacher.” Young Sherman took this advice to heart. When he was 13-years-old he wanted to work at a boat and Jet Ski rental store. When the manager said he was too young, Sherman didn’t bury his head in the sand or sulk. Instead he hung outside the shop politely helping boaters and doing little things for them. After three weeks the owner hired young Sherman. By the time he was 16-years-old he had became a manager for the same Boat and Jet Ski shop on weekends. But it wasn’t just menial labor to this executive-in-training. “I was always looking for efficiency and ways to run the business better.” At Palm Beach State College he received a 4.0 GPA and was in the honor society. When Sherman attended University of Florida he started a successful web design and consulting business that paid his tuition, room and board.

But for someone with curiosity and a penchant for learning Sherman was not satisfied to hang out in Cyberspace. Instead he had visions of running and maximizing businesses. So he got a BS and MS in accounting and realized very quickly that accounting was a fundamental skill to running any business. “I did accounting work at Crowe Horwath but decided to switch from tax to audit. I like using numbers to add value and growth to an organization - because at my core - I’m an idea and strategy person,” said the Hobe Sound native. Sherman doesn’t let the grass grow under his feet for very long. He discovered at an early age that one must utilize their resources to fulfill goals and manifest your dreams. So he found mentors, business partners and inspirational books to satisfy his lust for knowledge and perfection. In 2011 while he was working at the accounting firm he co-founded a gourmet mushroom farm called Sublicious Farms. Say what? This accounting maven with the storehouse of knowledge and passion for business co-owns a mushroom farm? “I built a website for Scott Lyons in 2009 and two years later he told me he had developed compost for growing gourmet mushrooms. He also asked me to help with the business side of the company. So we got an investor, a warehouse and started a business together.” As someone who likes to make things happen Sherman got caught up in the vortex of business on a larger scale. Some would say it was luck, others karma – but after meeting Jeremy Office he landed a job as the Managing Director at SJO Worldwide. “I analyze deals in order to make investment decisions on cutting edge companies. What builds a successful company is building a community around it.” That bit of wisdom is what has augmented Sherman’s numbers side with his sensitive selfless side. He is the Chair of the Young Professional Association of Delray, Treasurer of the Gold Coast Venture Capital
Association, on the finance committee of the Delray Chamber of Commerce and involved with the Global Shapers, an initiative of the World Economic Forum. Though these organizations are as varied as the scope of mushrooms he nurtures, they all have a few things in common. “I like to think outside the box and help provide thought provoking change in the community and the world. I also have a passion for helping others,” said Sherman, who is married to his high school sweetheart Tiffany. The groups he is involved with help young professionals network, learn from successful business leaders and gain support for their lofty endeavors. “I have been blessed
in my career and my life. Jeremy has been a great mentor, and I’ve gotten support from many people over the years. I don’t think everyone gets those opportunities so I wanted a chance to help young professionals meet successful business people. If I impact one person’s life, it’s a win.” Winning seems to be a thing that Sherman is good at. He won the heart of his true love when she was 15-years-old (they married two years ago), he won the familial lottery (his father was an excellent role model of character and strength) and he has the smarts to succeed at almost everything he tries. And to top it off, his wife just gave birth to a baby boy three months ago.
Being a dad, a husband and a son is something that comes naturally to this young executive who works 70 to 90 hours a week. When not at the office, he can be found surfing, fishing and spending time with his family. If it seems like Sherman has a charmed life, he does. But it’s not the roll of the dice – its hard work, introspection and an attitude so positive and bright it could burn a hole in your eyeballs. Just ask Jeremy Office who saw Sherman’s brilliance at first glance. “Everything about Kilburn is good. Chef Ernie is one person who can not only take the heat but he basks in its afterglow night after night. That’s why you can find him most nights at Caffe Luna Rosa, where he is the Executive Chef and head honcho. His passion for the cu-
linary arts is legendary (he cooked for VIP’s at the Olympics) and his ability to woo critics and guests has garnered the restaurant accolades and awards. There’s also a bit of history to this landmark institution where the sun and sand ser-

enade you while dining. Caffe Luna Rosa was one of the first Italian restaurants to grace the downtown Delray restaurant scene. But a lot has happened to the landscape of Delray since then, but Caffe Luna seems to rise with the tide masterfully. Why else would they have been voted the number one Italian Restaurant by the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce this year? They have also garnered the Certificate of Excellence Award from Trip Advisor.
There’s always a lot happening at Caffe Luna Rosa. But some things stay static at this wood paneled Italian Trattoria. For starters everything is freshly prepared to order, the beef dishes are grass-fed and the chicken and veal are hormone and steroid free. The pasta is homemade in their pasta making room (that is spotless and serene), the seafood is fresh and the sauces are made with fresh ingredients and natural juices. That’s the way it’s always been at this local hotspot. Founder Fran Marincola’s father was in the food business and taught his son that quality ingredients were imperative when running a restaurant. So that’s what he did. “Almost everything in our restaurant is prepared to order. Someone cuts the herbs and spices, pounds the veal chops, prepares the sauces from scratch and makes sure the food is of the highest quality. I opened the restaurant in 1993 – we were the first restaurant to have an outdoor café and the first Italian restaurant in Delray.” Caffe Luna Rosa continues to wow patrons with unique savory dishes that vary from time to time. Just recently Chef Ernie added homemade Cavateli as a specialty. If you’ve never tried this complex yet delicious whole wheat pasta dish with Maine Lobster, Asparagus and Grape Tomatoes cooked in a Sherry Wine reduction sauce, I suggest you do. The pasta holds the flavor of the lobster and sherry as if it was a point guard, and the sauce is divinely prepared with shallots and quality sherry. “I watch a lot of cooking shows and have never heard of anyone making lobster stock the way Chef Ernie does. He extracts more flavor pulverizing the lobster shells while most chefs throw them away. This dish is busting with flavor,” said Steven Myles. Myles also raved about the Polpette di Carne, better known as Meatballs. These round objects of affection are not your typical meatballs. They’re made of grass-fed natural meat in a homemade San Marzano tomato sauce, topped with the freshest ricotta cheese you’ve ever tasted. The meatballs are so tender you would think they came from an ethereal source. Caffe Luna Rosa also has fresh homemade mozzarella and tomatoes with basil and arugula in a balsamic reduction. One thing you can count on is that Chef Ernie (and partner-chef Marvin) is always dreaming up new ways to tickle your food fancy and spike your endorphins. Just recently they served a terrific fish dish that was pure heaven. Made with whole baked Orata, fresh lemon, bay leaves and shallots, it was filleted at the table and marinated in a deli-
chargrilled fresh salmon salad

cate Beurre Blanc sauce. The Orata (a white fish) was so terrific that a wordy description would not do it justice. If there was a sea faring rival it would be the Scallops Provencale. These jumbo scallops are pan seared and sautéed in mushrooms and chopped plum tomatoes in a light chardonnay sauce, served with whole grain herb flavored rice. “The Scallop Provencale was delicious and the rice was the best I have ever had. It had a nutty herb taste that complemented the scallops perfectly,” said Helen Myles. If you like veal – and have a hankering for a huge shot of protein – definitely try their Costoletta Di Vitello. This huge veal chop is lightly pounded in a San Marzano tomato sauce and served with a blend of four Italian cheeses. The veal is center-cut milk fed and juicy beyond your dreams. There are other prime time veal dishes such as a gluten free char-grilled marinated center cut veal chop, thinly pounded veal medallions with mushrooms and shallots in a Marsala wine demi-glaze and Veal Parmigiana. The pasta dishes are also outstanding. Our favorite is the Pappardelle alla Bolognese made with homemade wide pasta in an imported San Marzano tomato meat sauce with grass-fed natural ground beef. 2 lb bone in Cowboy Ribeye Steak Roasted Eggplant Roasted Red Peppers Roasted Portabello mushrooms] Fresh Baby Spinach Gorgonzola cheese Salt Pepper Heavy Cream Nutmeg Extra Virgin Olive Oil preparation
Rub steak with salt and pepper and grill to medium rare. Brush extra virgin olive oil on vegtables (eggplant, peppers, portabellos) and toss with a touch of salt & pepper. Saute garlic and quickly toss in spinach. In a separate pan reduce heavy cream, add a touch of nutmeg, salt and pepper, and couple of ounces of gorgonzola cheese. Then assemble.

My Pet Is Going Blind…
W
e see many health challenges every week from cancer to allergies and everything in between. One of the ever increasing and more challenging issues is that of eye care. More and more of our pets are living less than optimal lives as the result of eye challenges including cataracts and blindness. Why is this occurring when we have all these medical advances and why is healing and curing such an issue? Why does it lead to such devastating results? Is it possible to reverse or cure most eye issues? Let’s start with basic eye infection including tearing, wet eye and tear staining. While some breeds of dogs and cats seem to be more predisposed to this type of condition, it is usually caused by a nutritional imbalance and exposure to toxins. While many eye infections are the result of bacterial, viral or fungal growth, we have to ask what is wrong with our pet’s immune system that allows these pathogens to proliferate. These infections are the result of an already challenged immune system and if the causes are not addressed and cured, more serious problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, uveitis, corneal ulcers and other
symptoms will occur. You may notice that while your veterinarian may refer to these as diseases, these are actually symptoms of a larger immune challenge. When these symptoms are treated, it may seem like they are healed however most of the time, they have only been disguised. When we look at tear staining, this is actually caused by a toxin that is a preservative in most pet foods. This condition may be diagnosed as a plugged tear duct or eye infection and then subsequently treated with antibiotics or eye drops. This can be an internal challenge that indicates liver, kidney and other issues. The body moves these toxins to locations where it can be eliminated. The eyes are one such vehicle however exposure of the eyes to a high concentration of these toxins will ultimately create a new and different damage. As with all our approaches to attaining optimal health, we need to build a strong natural immune system with species specific nutrition and by reducing the addition of toxins through drugs, vaccines, cleaning products, lawn chemicals and other toxins. Toxins plug and destroy the cellular functions in filters such as the liver, kidney and
lymphatic systems. Research has shown that aluminum and mercury have a direct link to kidney and liver failure which has a direct impact on the eyes. The biggest challenge with treating and curing eye problems is that eyes replace cells very slowly. Once damage is done, it requires months of nutritive support to grow back healthy eye cells while preventing more damage. We have found that along with a proper diet, adding specific botanical and herbs can help tremendously. Staining, cloudiness and even cataracts disappear. The key to eye health is prevention through the right diet, clean water, the removal of unnecessary drugs, medications and vaccines, toxic cleaners and environmental applications, along with appropriate action when the smaller symptoms occur. FIFTY SHADES OF GRAY – REAL POSSIBILITIES

There were shades of gray everywhere I looked. But there were no handcuffs in sight and little in the way of romantic gestures.
But there were a lot of people (15,000 to be exact) and dozens of lectures on health, wellness, finance and technology. To spice things up a bit there were movies, celebrities and concerts - all for a mere $35. The reason for all this education and enlightenment was empowerment. But not the type you read about on the Internet. This was a rather altruistic endeavor sponsored by AARP. In case you aren’t familiar with their Life@50+ events, then you’re either too young or embarrassed to join a club that sees laugh lines and varicose veins as part of your charm. AARP is one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the country with 37 million members. But when their magazines (or enrollment forms) start showing up in people’s mailboxes they often feel like doom has descended upon them. But don’t tell that to AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins. “How old would you be if you didn’t know your age? You need to lose your preoccupation with age and focus on living. It’s mind over matter, it you don’t mind it doesn’t matter.” (She is obviously not single and certainly does not live in Florida). Jenkins was inspiring – and powerful – in her message that age doesn’t matter. But as much as I wanted to drink the cool-aid, I knew in my heart that yellow teeth and thinning hair was not a powerful aphrodisiac. But listening to Robin Roberts, co- host of “Good Morning America,” made me want to reconsider my dour thoughts on aging. “Sometimes dreams don’t look like we want them to, but they are gratifying anyway. When fear knocks on the door, let faith open it. Be fearless, optimism is a muscle that gets better with use.” Roberts spoke about her need for daily prayer, meditation and her decision to go on live TV and rip off the wig she was wearing after chemo. “It was a teachable moment. I had to embrace where I was at the time. My mom always said, ‘Make your mess your message.’” 98

There were plenty of teachable moments. Physicist Michio Kaku spoke about “The Future of the Mind.” Though many of us rocking elders often wonder if we are losing ours – Kaku was quite upbeat about the future and the mind. “The cell phone today has more power than the space ship that landed on the moon in 1969. In the future computer power will be everywhere – on the walls, floors and even the wallpaper. When you meet someone their biography will come up in your glasses so you will know who to suck up to at a party.” Though Kaku was quite chipper and electrifying (as opposed to Ben Stein who seemed to be battery operated) the thought of my wallpaper telling people my SAT scores was a bit daunting. But there was more to this cerebral orgy than the future or the past. Most of the action (again no handcuffs) was in the Miami Beach Convention Exhibit Hall. At this 250,000-square-foot aging playing field there were 180 exhibitors to calm our fears of aging and help us dance through our golden years. There were exercise classes that challenged the spirit rather than the biceps, free Sippy cups with built-in wine glasses, pedometers, colorful pill boxes and enough kindness to make you wonder why you ever wanted to be young again. One of the highlights at this annual event is their Movies for Grownups series. Though the theme that runs through it is a bit on the down-low, they are always interesting. The film “Five Flights UP” with Diane Keaton, Morgan Freeman and Cynthia Nixon was a true story was about a couple deciding whether to give up their cherished Brooklyn apartment because it was a five floor walk-up. You know the rest. Steps and aging are as lethal as Xanax and alcohol. But it had a happy ending, and the author spoke candidly to us about selling her apartment and moving to Florida (spoiler alert: she kept a small place in Brooklyn).

The AARP Life@50+ was a great way to spend a few days listening (Alonzo Mourning and wife Tracy spoke about their impoverished childhoods and their need to pay it forward with their charities) and talking to others who aren’t as concerned with earthly success as with standing upright. Since grown-ups cannot exist on maxi pads and pedometers alone there was a rock concert finale with Gloria Estefan and Rita Moreno. Not only did it start at 5:30, but ear plugs were abundant (like Quaaludes in the 70’s) and we were gifted pouches with name badges with our city of origin. There was not, however, return to sender postage on our badges. But that’s Ok, even though most of us were tired in body, we were humbled and exhilarated in spirit.

Last month we discussed Relationship Red Flags, which now segues into this: the Top 3 Lamest Break Up Reasons of all time.
Scenario: You finally meet someone that appears normal, stable and decent, and you decide to give it the ol’ college try. All is going well, and a few weeks in, Boom! They drop a BOMB! Here goes: 1. The dreaded “We need to talk…” He: This can never be good. It can mean anything from “I think you poisoned the cat”, to “your things are packed and on the front lawn”. The alpha male will immediately go on the offensive and follow “We need to talk” with, “Yes, I’ve been meaning to talk to you too, it’s just that too many more important things have come up. You go first”. This will instantly put her on the defensive and possibly cause her to rethink her position. “You mean he may want to break up with me? Maybe I could be doing something better or different to make him want to stay”, she may be thinking. Advantage you! She: Ok girls. This sentence is never followed by anything good. We know this. We’ve used it. It’s usually the precursor to a break up talk. No one has ever said “We need to talk, I bought you a puppy”. So, what do we do? We worry all day, thinking about what they mean and how to answer. Let’s face it - we know what comes next. Hold you head up high and agree. Then be grateful it wasn’t a Sex and the City post it break up. I mean, if you had said it to him, it’s because you want out, no? 2. The crushing “I just want to be friends”. He: This universally means, “ You aren’t very good at __________.” Sex, finances, paying attention, cuddling, watching Chick Flicks or taking out the trash could all fit here, depending on inflection. Once again, give a big sigh of relief and offer up a big, friendly hug as if the weight of the world has been
taken off your shoulders. If you are particularly bold, you can ask, “Does this mean you will introduce me to ___________ (insert the name of her hottest friend here, then duck)”. She: Translation: “I no longer want to call you my girlfriend, but can I still call you for the occasional hook up?” Before we go all crazy, let’s think this through. This isn’t necessarily a bad deal. Assuming you weren’t too invested after dating a few weeks and everything is amicable, a casual date here and there with someone you’re
familiar and comfortable with is great. Key word “amicable”. If you’re not ok with it, pretend to be - then introduce him to your psycho clingy, girlfriend that owns 6 cats. Sit back, grab popcorn, watch the show and smile. After all, he asked to be introduced, right?
3. The timeless “It’s not you, it’s me”. He: It’s you. Of course, it’s you. It’s been you all the while. You need to get to the root of this, so you won’t make the same mistake with her hot friend ________ (see #2). Start by looking for the gaps in harmless things like smelling your armpits and slowly graduate to leaving the toilet seat up, not complimenting her when she gets her hair done or loses 1.5 pounds and work your way up to total fatal relationship mistakes. Here’s the trick: stop on the first possible excuse and move on. You have a hang nail, she hates hangnails, therefore she hates you. Remember logic questions on the SAT ? Same concept. She: Ha! Of COURSE it’s him! He can have this one all day! Why would any man in their right mind break up with fabulous you?! And even when we ladies use this line...it’s still him! LOL! But of course, this sometimes stings. Agree with him. Tell him, you’re glad he sees this and made it easier for you to walk away. Thank him, then grab a couple of girlfriends, and have yourself an old fashioned wiener roast! Recall all the little things that drove you crazy about him (hang nails, toilet seat etiquette, etc...) and maybe a few adult beverages to help dull the sting. The memory of the confused look on his face (for agreeing with him!) should bring a smile to your lips for a week or two. Then lose his number. Ciao Muchacho! Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Rex’s on North Federal Highway is an old-fashioned barber shop/ hair salon. There’s nothing fancy about its décor or its prices, but it’s an extraordinary place. It is Delray Beach. The real Delray.
Recently, a standing room only crowd gathered in the bar at Fifth Avenue Grill to celebrate Karyn Premock’s retirement after years and years of cutting hair at Rex’s in Delray. It was a celebration of a wonderful person, friendly, kind, warm and funny. But it was also a celebration of a small business, a craft and a community. One by one, friends (there are no customers or clients at Rex’s just friends) came to the microphone to express their gratitude for having known Karyn and for being part of a very special town. They shared stories, memories and experiences. Many came to the microphone twice, reluctant to let go of a treasured part of their town. We talk often about what makes a place great, we strive to create policies and rules that will preserve our “village like” character and that’s all well and good and important too. But the truth of the matter is great places come about because of great people. Karyn, Rex, Hazel, Billie, Billie C and the rest of the cast of characters at Rex’s are great people. They love the people who come through their doors to get their hair cut and colored or to share some gossip while getting a manicure. There’s a lot of talk about Delray that happens in that small, modest but very vibrant shop. Rumors are discussed and discarded, jokes are told, lives are shared and there are stories galore. If you want to understand Delray—it’s a requirement to visit Rex’s. Over the years, Rex’s and especially Karyn began to attract a series of aspiring politicians. If you want to get elected---the story goes---you had best find your way to Karyn’s booth. If she liked you, she would talk you up, get your petitions signed and you would win come Election Day. If she didn’t or if you ignored the power of Rex’s Salon, well Mr. Poli-

tician good luck to ya. The power of that story attracted city commissioners, mayors, state legislators and other wannabe’s over the years. I was already elected when I went to Karyn. I went to her out of self-defense. Everywhere I went in town, I would hear rumors about this or that. When I asked where they were coming from I was told they heard it at Rex’s or from somebody who went to Rex’s. Most of what I was hearing had elements of truth, some were wild stories and some of the information contained great insights. I had to check this place out. It’s not easy to get an appointment with Karyn. Her appointment book would make a President look lazy. But I was able to get in and I never left. I was happy she kept me after I was termed out and became one of Delray’s “Pips”, previously important people. We became friends, like she is with everybody who comes to the shop. The stories told at her retirement party by local legends Gary Eliopoulos, Ernie Simon, Bethesda Hospital CEO Roger Kirk, Fred Bonarde, Lloyd Hasner, Howard Ellingsworth and many many others were simply incredible. Getting a haircut at Rex’s is an experience. Often an exhausting one. You walk in and it’s like a vortex—jokes, gossip, singing, dancing and lots and lots of talking. Gary joked that it took so long to get his haircut (and he doesn’t have much hair to cut) that it grew back by the time it was over. Ernie said that he went to Karyn for an ego boost (he’s also challenged in the hair department) but she would bring out clippers, make a bunch of noise and make sure that he saw hair on the floor, even if it wasn’t his. “Karyn is what Delray is all about,” Ernie
told the crowd. “Neighbors and friends caring for each other.” John Miller, a member of a pioneering Delray family, said Karyn cut his hair since he was 12. Lloyd Hasner joked about haircuts that went on so long and were so exhausting that he prayed for sweet release---only to come back for more. More laughs, more friendship, more community. Gary E. talked about how Karyn would cluster her appointments to make sure the person before you and after you were people who didn’t like you. Was it a plan? Or was it her attempt to help people mend fences. Sometimes, if you had a health issue, say a heart problem, she would cluster your appointments around others facing the same concerns. Hmmm…happenstance or was she really a maestro? As for me, I’ll always remember Karyn coming to my house to cut my hair and Adam Hasner’s after some hurricane; can’t remember which one. We were tired and hot, but Karyn set up shop in my kitchen so we could get the hair out of our eyes and get back to recovery efforts. We shared happy stories and sad ones too. We shared a love of dogs; goldens for me, bloodhounds for her. She just lost her beloved Annie and the Rex’s community mourned. We knew Annie. And we laughed. Laughter was a given. Rex’s is Delray’s version of “Cheers” somebody said; the place where everybody knows your name and as they said this week leave your dignity and ego at the door. Amen.
