from the editor

t’s July. Happy birthday America and best wishes from the staff of Atlantic Ave Magazine to you our readers and advertisers. Summer is a magical time in Delray; a chance to experience the most fun small town in the USA without the crowds and traffic of the busy winter months. We give some reasons why summer rocks and also introduce you to a very special young man, Ian Mellul in this month’s City People feature. Ian is a product of Delray Beach who has gone off to George Washington University where he has excelled. I first met Ian many years ago, when he was a little guy and we’ve been friends ever since. He’s one of those people who the instant you meet him you say to yourself: “now this guy is really going to do some amazing things in his life.” Luckily, for Delray, Ian is one of many special young people growing up in Delray. You’ll meet a few others in the coming months. I have had the privilege of helping to mentor Ian and it has been a joy. I highly recommend you consider getting involved with our city’s youth. So many kids need our help and you get back so much. Also in this issue: our usual vast array of things to do, places to go, things to eat, ways to exercise and stay healthy and a whole host of pictures and features that celebrate Delray Beach. But first a quick story: I recently ventured south on business to the big city of Miami. While waiting in an office tower reception room, I glanced down to see what I could read. Lo and behold there was Atlantic Ave Magazine. When I asked my business associate about his choice of waiting room literature, he remarked: “the only place as cool as Delray is Miami. We want to keep an eye on the competition.” Well…I’m not sure we are competing with Miami, but we sure are a cool place. Even in summer. Speaking of which, stay cool as you enjoy Delray’s hot summer. Have a great Independence Day and we will see you on the avenue. Jeff Perlman, Editor

Caffé Luna Rosa, Delray Beach’s favorite beachfront restaurant, donated $1,000 to Steve Weagle’s Ride for the Red Cross last Friday. The popular weatherman from WPTV stopped by over the lunch hour, accepted the check live during the News Channel 5 noon broadcast, before peddling to his final fundraising stop in Boca Raton. Caffé Luna Rosa partners Bonnie Beer and John Gergen presented the check on behalf of the restaurant’s owners and staff. They were joined at the event by Jennifer Durrant and Laura Golden from the American Red Cross. Funds raised by Steve Weagle’s annual “Ride” to benefit the American Red Cross will be used to help educate local residents on preparing for hurricane season.

Red Brush Painting & Sherwin Williams team up to give back to Veterans and their families.

16 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Red Brush Painting and Sherwin Williams are launching their initiative to give back to the families of fallen heroes and are pledging to paint the homes of the families of 7 of our fallen soldiers this year. They are continually looking for families of fallen veterans in the areas where they operate Red Brush Painting. They are planning future projects for the following areas: Palm Beach County, FL Broward County, FL Miami, FL Orlando, FL Seattle, WA Tacoma, WA Portland, OR Dallas, TX Middlesex County, MA If anyone knows of someone in these areas, they can contact Gent Kumi at 855.634.1422 (Toll Free) Gent Kumi says “The Red Brush Project came to me one day going through Facebook. John Eynouf, combat veteran in Iraq and Afghanistan, posted a picture of a Green Beret hero. The picture looked like my cousin and I had a strong desire to help these fallen heroes and their families. John helped me to find the first project in Lake Mary, FL. For the second Project, I contacted ex-congressman, Alan West, and he forwarded

my request to Ellen Andel who is the vice Mayor of Jupiter. She found Lureen and gave me her information. Lureen’s house was painted Saturday, May 10th and attached are some pictures of the Project. Kumi would like to thank the following people for this Project: Sherwin Williams Company, who has promised to supply materials for 20 homes this year. Ralph Peterson, the store manager of Sherwin Williams of Port St. Lucie, 772.618.3884 Tiffany Moreno, Sherwin Williams sales rep for South Florida, 561.613.5048 Ellen Andel, Vice Mayor of Jupiter, 561.846.0808 Alan West, Ex-congressman. Neander Oliveira, Red Brush Senior Team Field Leader of Martin County. 772.370.8266. Neander is specifically mentioned here as our Team Leaders will follow up with another project in their own area, probably next year. So, if you know of anyone else in this area that might benefit please contact Neander. Why Painting you might ask? …. When you look better you feel better and the same goes for our homes. After losing your loved one to war it is hard to even imagine all the hardships and uncertainty that you face. By simply coming in and painting a house that is in desperate need for these families we can help to give them back pride in their homes and hopefully the beginning of a fresh start and healing. We need your help to reach out and find the families who are in the most need.

Consequences of Fad Diets “When I heard you had a cancellation, I rearranged my schedule so I could come in today.” Wendy was obviously excited about seeing me. “Thank you for fitting me in.” “I spend over 80 minutes with each new patient, so I have to limit the number of new patients I see each week; otherwise, there wouldn’t be any time to take care of my established patients.” “Dr. Woliner, I understand completely. I just want to get better.” “Tell me more.” “Ever since high school, I’ve been on one diet or another. Up until the last five years or so, I was always able to drop 20-30 pounds no problem [1].” “But?” “But I’d always gain it back, and now, even when I starve myself, I can’t lose an ounce!” “Yo-yo dieting messes up your metabolism. 65% of the weight lost is just water and muscle [2]. Not only do crash dieters lose their hair, get gallstones, and gain their weight back within a year, they increase their cortisol levels so much that makes it hard to ever lose weight again [3].” I continued, “So what diets have you done?” “What haven’t I done, you mean! Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, of course. Diet clinics prescribed appetite suppressants, laxatives and diuretics [4]. I even did over a dozen of the fad diets that are touted in Women’s World Weekly. Sprinkling Sensa on my food, hCG shots, and diet cookies you buy from the kiosk at the mall. I hate to admit it, but I’m one of the ones that fell for that Kimkins scam.” “Heidi Diaz, a.k.a. Kimberly Drake, had a lot of people fooled with her “after pictures” which were lifted of off ‘Russian Bride’ websites [5]. The trick all these diets use is that starvation itself causes a lack of appetite [6]. ‘SNATT’ is what they call it. Slightly Nauseous All The Time.” “Nausea was only part of my troubles. At 37, my periods stopped early, and my GYN is convinced that all these fad diets had something to do with it. My heart even started skipping a beat – my doc said ‘QT-something …” “Prolonged QT interval. That’s serious; some people have died from that [7]. Ironically, the most dangerous time is when you start eating again after prolonged dieting.” “Dr. Woliner, I’m through with all those pill-mill diet clinics. So many of them wouldn’t let me use my drug plan, instead, they forced me to buy overpriced drugs right from their office. I’m coming here because I know how important it is to see a boardcertified doctor, one that still goes to the hospital in case I need you.” I finished my exam. “In addition to measuring your metabolic rate, I also want to send a note to your primary care physician, to coordinate care.” Wendy’s metabolic rate was “minus 16%”, indicative of a slow metabolism [8]. Blood tests confirmed CENTRAL HYPOTHYROIDISM (suppressed TSH) INSULIN RESISTANCE (elevated HOMA-IR), and ADRENAL FATIGUE (high cortisol) [9]. I then prescribed a comprehensive plan of 18 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

behavior changes, diet modification, exercise, supplements, and even some medications [10]. Three months later, she came back to check her progress. “Dr. Woliner, I’m no longer shedding hair in the shower, but better yet, the scale is starting to move. delray under $50 By Darien Arden

{

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in July for $50 or less.

I

t’s that time again, everyone, so get out the stars-and-stripes bathing suits because we’re going to the beach and getting hot, hot, hot. Independence Day falls on a Friday this year, so let’s firstly thank the founding fathers for a three-day weekend. If you’re looking for the best beach action, look no further than downtown Delray Beach where you’ll find the hottest July 4 party this side of the Mississippi. Delray Beach’s July 4 Celebration begins on the beach at 8 a.m. with a sand sculpting contest and lasts all day long with the climax at 9 p.m. with the fireworks. So stuff the Winnebago with all your beach necessities and the family units and head to A1A where you’ll enjoy live music throughout the day, family activi-

ties including a Splash Zone with water slides and water games, a Kid’s Corner with arts and crafts, photo booth, sidewalk chalk and more, a Beer Garden to keep you hydrated all day long, and grilled food galore. Take a stab at the Putt’n Around mini golf course, stuff the stomach as part of the custard eating and burger eating contests, and marvel in the professional and amateur sand sculptures on the beach. Most importantly, make sure you have a front-row spot for the fireworks show, which launches from the north end of the beach. Whatever your July 4 pleasure, Delray has you covered. The July 4 Celebration is held along A1A and Atlantic Avenue. Please visit www.julyfourthdelraybeach.com or call (561) 278-0424.

o you feel like your weekends are turning into a ho-hum of mediocrity? Well throw on your newest dress because July 19 is National Toss Away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves” Day and you’ve got a bus to catch. The Bus Loop is once again making its way through Delray and it’s waiting to give you and your friends a party harty. The Bus Loop runs from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and is an East-meets-West type of tour, as the busses will shuttle you to and from the Delray Marketplace and downtown Delray. Stops include Cabo Flats, Burt & Max’s, Japango, TAP Global Beer Collections, Shula Burger and more, and there’s even a special party at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. Tickets are $20 in advance (or $35 at the door) and entitle you to a chauffeured drive to cocktail town as you receive one complimentary drink at each location. The best part is that 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the Delray Beach Center for the Arts so you can let your gullet know that it’s all for a good cause. The organizers remind you to not drink and drive, and parties are best served with friends so get together a group and enjoy a fun Saturday on the town. Checkin tables are located at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts and Delray Marketplace and open at 5:30 p.m. Please visit www. busloop.org or call (954) 5746000 for more information.

I

’ll admit it. I’m a loner. There, I said it. But, when I do want to hang out with my amigos, I do fancy a good ol’ fashioned outing. July is Social Wellness Month and let’s get socially well at the Extraordinary Art and Sale! Held at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts on July 31, the Art and Sale features exceptional art and an opportunity to be the proud owner of a fine piece of art. You will enjoy informal gallery tours of the current exhibit, “From Ordinary to Extraordinary: Paper as Art,” and you’ll have the opportunity to peruse all the art donning the walls and halls. Don’t miss the unique display of 5”x5” works in a variety of media by local artists, all of which will be on sale for only $25. Beer, wine and light bites are available, so let’s get fancy and turn this into an art bash. The Art and Sale is open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and admission is $5 and includes one drink ticket. The Delray Beach Center for the Arts is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Please visit www. delrayarts.org or call (561) 243-7922 for more information.

t’s true that the seasons we experience in Florida include “hot,” “hotter” and “I’m drowning in my own sweat,” but at least we know how to enjoy it! July is home to the Dog Days of summer, and instead of panting like a dog, let’s find some shade, a cool beverage, and a delicious meal and enjoy the finer things in life. et’s get outside and enjoy the weather! Especially being that we’re now into bikini season, I could use a little pickup in the caboose department. July is National Recreation and Parks Month and what better way to better your attitude and body than with a Belly Dancing Class outside? (Okay, a scantilyclad David Beckham teaching the class would be a plus, but I digress.) Classes are held every Wednesday in July from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Veteran’s Park and you’re encouraged to participate in this non-impact, weight-bearing exercise that is suitable for all ages. Many of the moves involve isolation, which improves flexibility of the torso, helps burn fat, improves circulation, increases joint flexibility and reduces stress. Belly dance moves are beneficial to the spine, as the full-body ripple moves lengthen and strengthen the entire spinal column and core muscles in a gentle way. You can even go full-force and dance with a veil while you build and strengthen your upper body, arms and shoulders. Who knows, you might even awaken your inner Shakira and gyrate like there’s no tomorrow. Veteran’s Park is located at the Intracoastal and Atlantic Avenue. The class costs $5 for residents and $6 for non-residents so grab some friends and shake what your momma gave ya. Please call (561) 243-7350 for more information.

“I

y career as a professional server began more than 20 years ago, soon after graduating from a business high school near my home in a small Romanian village, not far from Count Dracula’s castle. Over the years, I’ve worked in small hotels, large resorts and chain restaurants in cities such as Dubai and Lake Tahoe but it wasn’t until I came to Florida in 2008 – initially just planning to visit a friend – that I found jobs in small family restaurants such as Caffé Luna Rosa. For me, this is what I really enjoy and I don’t think of it as a job. When I come to work, this is my happiness time. I love the people and I love to make them feel at home. When I’m with the customers, I take pride in being a professional but I also like to make their experience fun. It’s just the way I am. Although I’ve worked at many restaurants around the world, it’s different here at Caffé Luna Rosa. I don’t feel like I’m coming to work, I feel like I’m coming to see my family. I love what I’m doing and I’m so happy being around all the people I’m working with. Caffé Luna Rosa 34 South Ocean Blvd. Delray Beach (561) 274-9404 www.caffelunarosa.com

feel like a native”, says John Davis, local psychotherapist and life coach. “I’ve lived in the same small Delray house since 1983. I felt then like I’d found a uniquely special neighborhood and I still love it here. It’s green, quiet and peaceful, especially when those gentle southeast breezes bring us the smell of the ocean. It’s a very spiritual place here, and I love it.” John’s home and “sanctuary” is in one of the fastest growing areas of Delray, between North Swinton Avenue and the boundary waters of Lake Ida. Now in private practice, with a focus on marriage and family therapy, John’s emphasis is on holistic health of the individual and their relationships. John’s a graduate of The University of Georgia and West Georgia College. He completed post graduate training at The Samaritan Center of South Florida, a faith based, non-denominational institute focused on family counseling. John is married to Jen Davis, owner of the downtown consignment boutique “Second Time Around”. They have a middle school daughter who attends St Joseph Episcopal School in Boynton. His son is a successful swimming pool contractor in Martin County. “I couldn’t dream up a better place to live than Delray” John says. “The beach is the place that most nourishes my spirit.” John Davis Licensed Mental Health Counselor 561-213-8030 www.johndaviscounseling.com

How about a ‘Coming out Party’ like never before??

Laura Souza and Husband Gus with their Fur Babies

Female dogs dressed up in designer gowns with their male escorts parading in their tuxedos. My girlfriend Carol and I have never been to an event quite like it! The party was held at the Atlantis Country Club and consisted of a delicious sit down dinner for the owners along with the dogs being served their dinner on their own tables! Five judges, including Miss Miami USA 2015, were to choose the Best Dressed Dog from a possible 60 entries for the title of ‘Mr & Mrs Cotillion’ The night also included a silent auction to benefit Justin Bartlett Animal Rescue.

Amanohashidate means “the bridge to heaven” and it is considered one of the three natural wonders of Japan. It’s a narrow sandbar that stretches across Miyazu Bay. Amanohashidate is best viewed by bending over and peering between your legs, because from that point of view it looks like the sandbar is ascending to heaven.

July 2 E.T. phone home. “Earth to Echo” is a low-budget adventure with a bunch of young actors you’ve never heard of and a premise that sounds vaguely familiar. A group of teens start getting strange encrypted messages on their cell phones. Couple it be an alien seeking their help? Dave Green directs a cast that includes Teo Halm, Astro, Reece C. Hartwig, Ella Wahlesedt, Jason Gray and Cassius Willis. Rosemary’s sister-in-law? “Deliver Us From Evil” also has an oddly familiar premise. Troubled New York cop Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) investigates a series of disturbing, inexplicable crimes. He enlists the help of a priest (Edgar Ramirez) schooled in the ways of exorcism. The screenplay, written by director Scott Derrickson, is based on the book by Sarchie about his real-

Keira Knightly 38 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

life experiences. Olivia Hale, Sean Harris and Donan Missick co-star. Debbie Reynolds she is not, and this “Tammy” is not in love. Melissa McCarthy plays the title character, who has just wrecked her clunker car, lost her job at a burger joint, and discovered her husband is messing around with a next-door neighbor. Ben Falcone (“Enough Said”) directs a cast that includes Susan Sarandon, Mark Duplass, Allison Janney, Dan Aykroyd and Kathy Bates.

July 4 “Begin Again” shows promise if simply for the fact it is written and directed by John Carney, who gave us the wonderful Irish musical romance “Once.” Keira Knightly stars as Greta, an aspiring singer who moves to New York City to pursue a musical career with her boyfriend. The boyfriend promptly gets a solo contract and dumps Greta. She is then discovered by a down-and-out record producer (Mark Ruffalo) who sees her potential. Scarlet Johansson, Catherine Keener, Hailee Steinfeld and Adam Levine co-star.

July 11 Seems we just can’t get enough of Caesar and his “Planet of the Apes.” “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is a sequel to the 2011 remake “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” which also starred Andy Serkin (Gollum in the Hobbit movies) in action-capture as the world’s smartest ape. That movie in turn was a sequel to the original “Planet of the Apes” from 1968. Once again the apes battle humans as a fragile truce is broken. The cast includes Keri Russell, Jason Clarke, Kodi SmitMcPhee, Gary Oldman and Jody Greer. Aww, it’s “The Fluffy Movie,” which is not what you might think. Fluffy is the nickname of comedian Gabriel Iglesias, and the movie is a documentary based on two sold-out shows February 28 and March 1 in San Jose, California. You can’t beat the director (Rob Reiner) or the cast (Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton) of “And So It Goes.”

Douglas is a self-centered jerk of a Realtor who gets stuck with a 9-yearold granddaughter (Sterling Jerins) he never knew he had. Diane Keaton is the friendly neighbor who tries to help him. Hoping to spice up their love life, a married couple (Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel) decide to make a “Sex Tape.” Complications arise when the tape disappears the next day. Jake Kasden previously directed Cameron Diaz in “Bad Teacher.” Writer-director James DeMonaco is back with “The Purge: Anarchy,” which is a sequel to his violent 2013 original. Once a year all laws are suspended, including the one against murder. You don’t want to run out of gas just before the purge begins. That’s exactly what happens to a luckless couple. Frank Grillo, Zach Gilford, Michael Kenneth Williams, Kiele Sanchez and Keith Stanfield star. The computer-animated comedy “Planes” must have made some money, because Walt Disney is back with a sequel to that 2013 hit: “Planes: Fire and Rescue.” Dane Cook is back as the voice of Dusty, the main fire-fighting plane, and Julie Bowen is his little friend Lil’ Dapper. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is “Hercules.” That’s pretty much all you need to know about this action flick, based on a 2008 comic book series by Steve Moore. Tobias Santelmann is the golden-haired bad guy, Resus, and Danish actor Askel Hennie plays Tydeus; a man so violent he needs to be chained up at night. Brett Ratner (“Movie 43”) directs. Luc Besson loves “Lucy.” The director of “District B13” and “La Femme Nikita” directs Scarlett Johansson as a very pretty, brainy and pretty fearsome heroine. The ubiquitous Morgan Freeman co-stars as Professor Norman with Man-Sik Choi as Kang. A whole gang of previous characters from the “Step Up” movie series (but not Channing Tatum from the 2006 original) come together in Las Vegas for a “Step Up All In” Danceoff. The cast includes Alyson Stoner, Briana Evigan, Ryan Guzman, Izabella Mikoi and Stephen Boss.

Treatment Options for Pre and Post-surgical Patients

{

By Dr. John Conde

If a patient has had one or more spinal surgeries and is still suffering from pain the term “failed back surgery” is often used and with that carries many symptoms and disabilities. Many failed back surgery patients are finding relief with conservative chiropractic management.

Approximately 42.7% of workers who first saw a surgeon had surgery to only 1.5% of those who first saw a chiropractor! So, how successful is spinal surgery, and what about the patients who continue to have pain even after their surgery, can chiropractic care help?A review published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons showed that the majority of cases suffering from DDDreported that non42 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

surgical approaches were the most effective treatment option, including chiropractic! The report shows that the success rate for surgical spinal fusion from DDD is ONLY 50-60%. They go on to write “surgery should be the last option, but too often patients’ think of surgery as a cure-all and are very eager to embark on it.” A second study reported that, 10 years post-surgical treatment with artificial disc replacement, 40%

of the patients treated failed and needed a second surgery within three years after the first. Very similar findings are reported for not only DDD but other spinal related condition, such as spinal stenosis. What about the success rate of chiropractic care for patients with failed back surgeries? In a 2012 article, three patients who underwent lumbar spinal fusion at least 2 years post-surgery were still reporting pain. They were treated with conservative chiropractic care followed by rehabilitation for 8 weeks. At the completion of care, all three (100%) had reported clinical improvement that remained up to a year later. A second study reported 32 cases that were also treated with chiropractic care after lumbar surgery resulted in a reduction in pain by up to 64%! Typically, surgery on the spine should be a last resort, but we know that is not always the case. Before opting for surgery or if you continue to have pain after surgery, look into conservative care options that are available. Facial Rejuvenation for the Savvy

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

IPL, intense pulsed light, is the gold standard for photo-facialrejuvenation. This FDA-cleared and patented technology provides dramatic results for conditions that result simply from living. These include age spots, sun-induced freckles, redness of rosacea, acne scarring and other discolorations and blemishes.

Using the principle called selective photothermolysis, IPL treatments target different pigment types called “chromophores” in the skin. They selectively absorb the light energy as heat and then yield the desired response. These optimally targeted wavelengths of light clear vascular and pigmented lesions by the dozens from the face, hands, neck and décolleté. Pigmented lesions undergo a mild peeling and disappear within two or three days, while the vascular lesions blanch and then resolve within 10 to 14 days. The process is painless, takes about 20 minutes and involves no serious downtime, thus, the savvy patient can return to their busy life with little interruption and no questions asked. 44 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Why choose IPL over other treatment options? Laser resurfacing and deep chemical peels often send patients into hiding, as they wait for redness, swelling and peeling to subside. Microdermabrasion addresses skin irregularities, but is not effective against all complexion problems including redness, flushing and broken capillaries. Face lifts and other surgical procedures are far too invasive for younger patients and for “baby boomers” that simply want to revitalize their appearance without time lost in recovery. Photo Rejuvenation or PhotoFacial is one of 2013’s most popular anti-aging treatments. This revolutionary breakthrough requires a series of non-invasive anti aging

skin care treatments that improve or completely eliminate virtually all of these of skin conditions: • Hyperpigmentation • Sun Damage • Broken Capillaries • Spider Veins • Age Spots • Freckles • Mild Acne Scars • Rosacea and Redness • Skin Discolorations Dr. Thomas C. Is Your Sunscreen Making You Fat?

{

By Kristin Heather

The sun strengthens the immune system; it aids healthy digestion; it balances sleep patterns and sex drive.

The sunshine cleanses, oxygenates, and lowers the pressure of the blood. It kills germs and provides Vitamin D. The sun literally puts you in a good mood. It helps you lose weight, increasing metabolism by stimulating the thyroid gland. So, why are we all hiding from it? My concept in sun protection gives another option. The benefits of sun exposure are often missed out on due to widespread panic about too much sun. As a skin care professional, I understand the paranoia: the sun causes 90% of wrinkles and it is important to be protective of your skin to prevent severe damage and cancer. However, the relentless marketing of sunscreen, said to be necessary all day every day, brings with it a need for heightened awareness. Continual slathering of sunblock without the knowledge of exactly what’s in the product and its effects can be dangerous. The solar spectrum contains both UVA and UVB rays: UVA penetrates deep into the skin while UVB causes sunburns and gives Vitamin D. We are all told to use broad-spectrum sunscreens, which contain chemicals that prevent both UVB and UVA through skin absorption. Other highly marketed sun protectors are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These minerals actually sit on top of the skin and reflect the broad spectrum. Although not bad in moderation in their natural form (visible on the skin as white thick paste), altering them by decreasing the particle size so that they are not visible when applied is risky. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but below is just a few of the reasons why your sunscreen might be making you fat, possibly making you stupid, and almost defi46 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

nitely poisoning you: • Applying and reapplying the chemical filters in sunscreen allow you to be in the sun for extended periods of time. Ideally, you would be in the sun without protection for short moderate spurts daily, then cover up with clothes as to not attract any of the damage the sun can cause. Yet, consistent reapplication gives the skin ample opportunity to absorb chemicals, and keeps you from reaping any benefits of sunlight. • Many chemicals in sunscreens are endocrine disruptors, which mimic natural hormones. These chemicals can affect your health in several ways. According to the Environmental Working Group: endocrine disruptors “can lead to obesity, infertility… learning and memory difficulties, adultonset diabetes or cardiovascular disease, as well as a variety of other diseases.” • The natural minerals marketed today also pose a risk. “Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are so tiny, they not only cross the cellular membrane, they cross into the nucleus of the cell as well, where they damage DNA and disrupt normal cell division. They also cross the protective blood – brain barrier and are capable of killing brain cells,” writes Elizabeth Plourde, PhD in her article “Sunscreens.” “A study that compared the effects of nanosized versus micronized particles found the same harmful effects from both sizes.” If you are going to use zinc, look for nonmicronized to avoid these dangers. When you stop using chemicals on your skin, it will begin to work properly, able to

move wastes out and nutrients in efficiently. My philosophy of sun protection is that with the proper ingredients and maintenance, it is possible to actually teach the skin how to protect itself from the sun. Using flowers and plants that thrive in the sun and oils that have natural protection against the sun, I am able to produce products that encourage cumulative knowledge within the skin. If we allow the skin and the sun to be in harmony, your skin will simultaneously benefit from the sun and protect itself. Do you have the beginning stages of periodontal disease?

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

It is estimated that 35.7 million Americans are living with a bacterial infection of the gums known as periodontal disease.

WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE? Periodontal disease is an infection of the gum tissue. What happens is the bacteria found naturally in our mouth, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on teeth. Plaque that is not removed can harden and form tartar that brushing doesn’t clean. The longer plaque and tartar are on the teeth, the more harmful they become. The next step is gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums, and when gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to periodontitis. In periodontitis, gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets that become infected, which is the beginning of much larger problems. Factors that predispose people to gum disease include primarily bad oral hygiene and genetics. Research has proved that up to 30 percent of the population may be genetically predisposed to gum disease, and if you couple that with poor oral healthcare, your chances increase. The warning signs of periodontal disease include pain in the mouth; bleeding gums when brushing; swollen, tender and receding gums; persistent bad breath; pus between teeth and gums; and more. In the worst cases, teeth are lost, and there could be possible lasting damage to your body. HOW IT AFFECTS YOUR BODY If periodontitis develops, bacterial toxins and the body’s natural response to infection start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed, and the teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed. Additionally, gingivitis is not painful, however, by the time 48 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

it becomes painful you have periodontitis, and the damage to your gum tissue is far more severe. Not only can periodontal disease cause bad breath, pain and tooth loss, but it can also contribute to a variety of serious life threatening conditions including heart disease, stroke and diabetes. STEPS YOU CAN TAKE Immediately incorporate brushing and flossing into your oral healthcare. These two activities break up the plaque that coats the tooth and gum surfaces. Without proper homecare, bacterial plaque accumulates on your teeth and, over time, causes damage to gum tissue and bone. Follow the following simple steps to take action against periodontal disease: brush at least twice a day with a soft-bris-

tled brush; use a toothpaste with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties; floss daily to clean between teeth and below the gum line; rinse with a mouthwash designed to fight tartar and plaque; and see your dentist at least twice a year for regular cleanings and check-ups. If you think you have the warning signs for periodontal disease, speak to your dentist and hygienist as soon as you can. They will be able to clean your mouth and advise you of the necessary steps you need to take to minimize damage and protect your overall health. Top 5 Exercise Tips for a Summer Safe n’ Swaggin By Bill Dorton

South Florida’s summer is one of the best times of year (in my Midwestern opinion) to exercise, even more so in Delray Beach. You can almost hear the sand from the gym beckoning you to run barefoot on its cushioning platform.

Whether you prefer cardio-pumping beachrunning, core-tightening wave-surfing, upperbody-toning kayaking or just sun-worshipping outdoor-sweating, the summer offers a plethora of possibilities – the key is to make sure you approach it with safety and with these tips in mind. Tip # 1: Drink until clear Summer is synonymous with ‘get your sweat on.’ And there’s no better friend to sweat than H20. There’s also no greater enemy than H20 deficiency. Now how to ‘test’ the friendship, you ask? Just check the ol’ porcelain bowl. Shoot for clear... or the color of lemonade; if it’s color is darker, you may be dehydrated. Problems start when you become dehydrated. Be aware of the increase in heat and humidity. Typically our bodies are warmer than the environment. When that changes, our muscles regulate heat by releasing sweat allowing the body to cool itself. But sweat = losing fluid – aka dehydration is setting in. Further if the body is no longer capable of cooling itself it will begin to store heat inside, putting your internal organs and central nervous system at high risk – i.e. heat exhaustion, heat stroke. It’s important to drink water consistently at least 48 hours in advance of intensified exercise. Drink at least 20 – 32 ounces of water two hours before exercise and at least 8-oz of water shortly before getting out in the heat, with a few mini gulps every 20-30 minutes during exercise. Keep your body cool from the inside out and you’re on your way to a great summer sweat-fest. Tip # 2: Just say NO to Summer Fashion Faux Pas Step aside, Joan Rivers – the real ‘fashion police’ are here. And this summer they’re handing out copious offenses for the outlandishly dark and heavy cycle, and the bare and unprotected 50 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

loads of unlawful laundry. Best way to make the laudable list this summer is by wearing lightweight fabrics that wick away sweat and are light in color reflecting the onerous sun. One common problem is that people overdress, especially key areas that require open ventilation such as the legs, which generate a lot of heat. Further many people forget or skim on sunscreen. Lather, reapply, and repeat. Don’t ever skimp on your health. A well-ventilated hat with a brim and some lightweight sunglasses can protect your face and help prevent crows-feet, sunburn and headaches! Allow your head to breathe and cool off once indoors. Tip # 3: Remember timing IS everything Create a calendar and stick to it. If possible, go for a 6am beach run or play some morning tennis before heading into the office. Sign yourself up for a weekly outdoor gym boot camp or a sweat-atsunset outdoor yoga. This will add length to your day, quality to your sleeping habits and overall vigor to your summer workout. Inevitably, heat and humidity will slow you down. Are you a nocturnal worker with ghastly night owl hours? You may be better suited to workout in the gym during the peak heat of the day. If you know the thick air is going to suffocate your cool breath like a sauna cabin, probably not wise to choose high noon for your departure. Take it easy daredevil. You can still make ‘Evel Knievel-like’ workouts happen before 10am or after 6pm, without adding risk to your health. Tip # 4: Check-in with Siri before heading out It’s important to know your GPS, route and your climate before exercising outdoors. It may seem fine in the first half hour or so but when you’re running aimlessly in the summer heat and

not familiar with your surroundings (much less the nearest place for water and shade) you’re putting your health at risk. Make sure that there’s some shade along the way and that you’re not exposed to constant direct sunlight. Check the heat index for the relative humidity that day and plan accordingly. You may not realize it at the time but when sweat is evaporating; you’re losing fluids. Always tell a friend where and what route you’re taking and when you plan to return. For safe measure, bring your phone and GPS tracker with you – can’t hurt to listen to some tunes throughout the way! Tip # 5: More snooze and less booze The summer is a great time to catch up on your zzz’s. Look at your summer as a period to ‘catch up’ – catch up with your health regimens, doctor checkups, old friend get-togethers and most definitely, sleep. One inhibitor to reaping the bennies of beauty sleep is the late-nights and 2-for-1 tonics. Diuretics like caffeine and alcohol when consumed before or in less than 48 hours of exercise can rapidly accelerate the effects of dehydration. Make sure you’re allotting for at least 8 hours of restful, uninterrupted sleep and order a double: see Tip No. 1. Bill holds a bachelors degree in Exercise Science and is a ACSM Health Fitness Specialist. He can be reached at 561-274-7477 or information@thegym111.com

Keeping Up with the Curls!!!

{

By mark hasche

This month we celebrate curly hair. Curly hair is some of the sexiest hair on the planet. It’s sad to us that most of the “Keepers of the Curls” we’ve met in our lifetime would disagree to this celebration. That’s why we’ve dedicated this article to all that is curly. Rock out your curly hair!

Here are some tips to help keep your curls from looking like a fire hazard. To shampoo or not to shampoo? The texture of naturally curly hair is usually on the dry side. Try washing your hair every 3-4 days. When shampooing remember to not rough up the curl too much.

Kayla, PeterMark Stylist and Model 52 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Moisture Moisture Moisture. Even though you’re not shampooing every day, curly hair requires daily conditioning followed be a cool rinse. This will seal and lock the cuticle layer producing extra shine. On the run use an h2O bottle with a small amount of conditioner added to spritz your locks when needed. Ask your stylist, but generally a conditioner specially formulated for curly hair or moisture is best suited to tame frizz. Try blotting your hair with a clean towel or even try paper towels making sure not rough up the curl. All curly hair isn’t created equal. Curls come in every size, shape or combination. What this means is that you’ll probably try a dozen cocktails of product until you find what works best with your curl. Whether it’s a gel, spray, foam or cream you currently use, try mixing it with a light leave in conditioner. Work into your hair making sure again not to rough curls. Light, water-soluble products work better on dry curly hair. Products like waxes and silicones can weigh curls down. Finishing the look can go a few different ways. I like to blot hair again to remove any unwanted product and water. Particularly for fine hair because water adds weight and inhibits body when drying naturally. If you’re going to diffuse your hair flip it upside down and use a finger diffuser; once again, making sure not to rough the curl formation. This will give lots of body and bounce. If after diffusing you feel that the ends look a little scary, spritz with the h2o/conditioner

bottle. Apply a finishing product to help seal ends. Treat your sexy curls right. Regular deep treatments are a must for keeping curls in order especially in dry weather. The best advice is to really own and love your curls. If you’re in the frame of mind that you loathe them then they will never look good. In that case it’s time to seek professional advice as to transforming them. Weekly blowouts at your salon will give a temporary fix. Remember naturally curly hair can lose its curl or become straighter over time due to excessive styling and/or chemical processing. If you just want to loosen your ringlets there’s tons of products on the market that are great if properly administered by a professional. Relaxing curly hair will soften a tight curl pattern but will not straighten it. Relaxers can’t be washed out of hair after it is applied. Only chemical straighteners make tight curls straight. Love thy curls, treat them right and stay curltastic. Until next month, Divo out! LIGHT ‘EM UP CIGARS LOUNGE Fine Cigars And Great Company By Diane Feen

photos by melissa korman

Anthony Caliendo has done a lot in his life, but smoking cigars has always been a constant. He’s been a successful stockbroker, mortgage broker, and a big cheese in the Italian food business.

So why did this self-made author of the motivational book, “The Sales Assassin” buy a cigar lounge off the beaten path in Delray Beach? “I have been a cigar connoisseur for many years and I came here to smoke cigars because my office is nearby,” said the fast thinking entrepreneur who inhabits a more rarified world than most. “When I realized that Charmed Leaf Cigars was for sale I thought, ‘this might be a good time to buy this place, fix it up and create a friendly spot for cigar lovers to congregate.’” So that’s what Caliendo did. He renamed the two-year-old cigar lounge “Light ‘Em Up Cigars” and proceeded to renovate, rebrand and re-appoint this spot as one that would delight and entice cigar smokers. The 1,500-squarefoot lounge and man cave is indeed just that

56 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

– a place for men (and some women) to congregate to schmooze, smoke cigars and watch sports. If you doubt his Raison d’être (reason for existence) just ask Dale Peck. “I come to Light ‘Em Up every day. I like smoking cigars and this is a nice comfy place to come to. The guys are nice, it’s no nonsense and no one is talking politics. Its good cigars and good company,” said Peck. The reason for this comfy inviting atmosphere is pure intention. Caliendo and his manager, Indian Alan wanted to create a space that treasures a welcoming spirit, good conversation and quality cigars. They have a full line of Camacho cigars, Padron’s and Aging Room cigars. But variety is the spice of life at this cigar haven on the East side of Congress Avenue John DeBiase, co-owner with ower Anthony Caliendo enjoying a smoke in “The Players Club” cigar lounge

(South of Lake Ida). They have hundreds of cigars with names like Perdomo, My Father, Montecristo, Romeo Y Juliet, Aging Room, Ashton and a selection of Xikar Accessories. “My passion and appreciation for cigars was the major influence when I bought this place. It was a dream of mine to own and operate a cigar lounge, but I knew it was important to offer excellent customer service. I wanted to create the best atmosphere for special events, generous giveaways and a place where cigar lovers could congregate and feel comfortable,” said Caliendo, whose Caliendo Foods & Imports office is just a few doors away from Light ‘Em Up. Part of Caliendo’s vision was to host special events that customers would enjoy. There is an antique car show every month on the third Saturday, a bike night with custom motorcycles the first Thursday of the month as well as Poker Nights. They offer a free cigar to new customers who give their name and email address. And to top it off they have weekly “Cigars for Scars” recovery meetings every Tuesday from 7pm to 8pm. If you have a propensity for intrigue (and a good head for math) you can guess how many cigar labels are in a large glass cylinder up front and win a box of cigars. Light ‘Em Up Cigars is a lot of things to a lot of people, but the common thread among most is camaraderie. There are large flat screen TV’s scattered among the two rooms (the Man Cave and the Players Club) as well as leather theater chairs, recliners and couches. For major sporting events there is a 120” Projector that

captures the sights and sounds of fight nights, football, basketball and baseball games of epic proportion. There’s also wood paneling, wood floors and enough sports memorabilia to entice the most jaded of sports fans. If you look up you’ll see a picture of Caliendo and Joe Namath on a shelf in the Players Club. There are also coveted Yankee jerseys, autographed baseballs and footballs, hockey helmets and basketballs (one signed by Shaquille O’Neal and another by Dwayne Wade). But among all the subtle charm and character of this hidden cigar oasis is some down home hospitality. “My favorite sayings are ‘Whatever it takes,’ and ‘I’m great, but that’s OK because I am getting better,’” said Manager Indian Alan. Alan, who comes from real Indian stock, coexists nicely with Cowboy Billy, who takes the reins when Alan is not around. It’s this serenity of purpose and kindred spiritual soul that makes coming to Light ‘Em Up an epic event for most of its patrons. “I come here four or five times a week,” said Joaquin Candelario of Boca Raton. “It is enjoyable, laid back and relaxing here. It’s like a second home for me. The staff are very accommodating, they know what I like to smoke and they personalize

Enjoying a good smoke and a good story in the “Man Cave”

the service.” They even personalize the camaraderie. “We had a new customer come in a while ago. I introduced him to George who introduced him to everyone else. Now he comes here religiously every week to watch sports, smoke a quality cigar and have fun with the gang,” said Indian Alan. That’s just what Caliendo had in mind when he took over the cigar lounge with the big heart and small real estate imprint. As a way of keeping it in the family, Caliendo partnered with his father-in-law John DeBiase (of Diamond Ready Mix Concrete in Staten Island). And it seems

like a good match, they were voted Best of Delray Cigar Lounge in 2013. Both Caliendo (who is known as The Big Cheese) and DeBiase have a saying that sums up this new venture: “Next time you’re in Delray, I invite everyone to Get Their Ash Down Here!” LIGHT ‘EM UP CIGARS 1445 N Congress Ave Suite 7 DELRAY BEACH, FL 33445 561-276-3414 INFO@LIGHTEMUPCIGARS.COM Lightemupcigars.com Facebook.com/lightemupcigars

special feature ║ DELRAY YACHT CRUISES

Adventures In Paradise

DELRAY YACHT CRUISES It’s pretty easy to get jaded living in South Florida. You have the surf, the sun, the beautiful foliage and temperatures that hover around perfect every day.

Yet, when we find something really extraordinary it’s not uncommon for our jaws to drop with a sense of wonderment and awe. That is what we experienced recently on The Lady Atlantic Steel Band Sunset Cruise in Delray Beach. If you’re not familiar with Delray Yacht cruises – that leave from Veteran’s Park most days– then you haven’t experienced one of the most exciting ways to bask in South Florida’s natural assets. The company, started by Joe and Kerry Reardon, consists of two beautiful yachts that cruise the intracoastal on a daily basis. The sunset cruises allow passengers to enjoy the evening breeze, take in the illuminating skyline and have a snack or drink. The afternoon sightseeing cruises are just as wonderful, and are narrated by the captain who points out the more salient landmarks.

Although the ships seem as pristine and luxurious as the ones seen on TV or TMZ, these two are purely for the public. That means you can meander over there (off season) most days of the week for a 1:30 sightseeing cruise and Thursday to Saturday for an evening sunset cruise. On Sundays there’s a brunch cruise at 10:30 and a sightseeing cruise at 1:30 pm. Most everyone on the Yacht has something to say about this seafaring adventure (that feels like a vacation) and they’re all pretty positive. Lee Calig, whose family made steel drums for 82 years in Pittsburg, came aboard the steel drum sunset cruise to celebrate his birthday. “I love music, the scenery is beautiful and the weather is awesome tonight. I am here with four friends and everyone is really enjoying it,” said the Delray resident who

brought along Carole, Helen and Adele who were festively dressed and enjoying the ride. Not only are there two yachts – The Lady Delray and The Lady Atlantic – but they have holiday and specialty cruises throughout the year. There are Boat Parade cruises (in Boynton, Delray Beach and Boca), July 4th Fireworks Cruises, Easter and St. Patty’s Day Cruises, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day Cruises. On New Year’s Eve they have Dinner and Dance Cruises and on Father’s and Mother’s Day there are Brunch Cruises. From December to January they also offer Holiday Lights Cruises. These luxury yacht journeys are also available for private charter for special events or corporate events. Last month Artie Vichnis and Marina Feldman rented the Lady Atlantic for their son’s Bar Mitzvah. And they couldn’t have been happier. “We and our guests (especially Alex) had an amazing time last night! We can’t thank you enough for your expertise in guiding us

through this process! Everyone we’ve spoken to is still raving about it! The food, your crew, the cruise and the music – it was all wonderful! Thank you again for making last night an unbelievably fabulous time for us and our guests! It was an astounding success!!” Meredith Proshuto Owens also raved about her wedding aboard the Reardon’s yacht. “Everyone should get married on the Lady Atlantic. I still have people tell me my wedding was the best one they’ve ever been to, and it was a year ago.” Part of the reason for the exclamation points and rave reviews is that Meghan Christian makes these events run as smoothly as an Aston Martin. Kerry’s sister Meghan has been working with the Reardon’s since she was a teen and continues the family tradition to this day. Her title of Vice President is an impressive one, but it doesn’t come close to describing her duties as rainmaker of all things happening on the yachts. “I don’t like titles but I try to be the first person someone talks to on the phone and the last person they say goodbye to when they leave their event,” said the 30-year-old beauty. If you decide to have a wedding, anniversary party, corporate function or birthday party there are numerous details that have to be planned, reserved and figured out. But with Meghan in charge of event planning you can throw caution to the wind and let her do the work. “My favorite part of the job is making someone’s special event come to life. Whether it is assisting with a group of 10 on a public cruise, or helping plan someone’s wedding or special event, I love helping people plan a party that creates lasting memories. I would say it’s as close to a dream job as there is.” Meghan is often the person who makes sure the candle lighting (or toast) for a

wedding or Bar Mitzvah is done at the right time. She also helps design the menu, arranges for musician or DJ, makes sure the photographer is on board, coordinates the flow of the event and assists in the ceremony if needed. If you want to host a private party (or corporate event) and have your own caterers, musicians and party planners then by all means go for it. But know that both yachts have a chef on board with food and drink is available (for purchase) for public and private events. They can also arrange for ice sculptures, flowers, video and audio equipment, theme décor and other party details. It’s important to know that the Lady Atlantic seats up to 116 on the main deck and 150 for a cocktail party. The Lady Delray seats up to 80 on the main deck and 120 for cocktail service. Recently Joe hosted the annual “Marathon Monday” sightseeing cruise to benefit the Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation. Martin is the little boy who lost his life in last year’s Boston Marathon bombing. Delray Yacht Cruises donated 100 percent of ticket sales from this recent event. Delray Yacht Cruises has a special gift for everyone this summer – From June 1st through October 31 the cost of a cruise will be $12 per person (with a coupon from their website). So call Delray Yacht Cruises and make a reservation for a two-hour cruise that will delight your senses and thrill you with its unexpected scenic treasures. DELRAY YACHT CRUISES 801 E. Why Summer in

Delray Roc By LINDA BROWN

{

We give you seven reasons… there are more, we promise.

1

Brunch Caffe Luna Rosa has expanded its legendary brunch to 7 days and chances are we will be able to get a seat at this Delray landmark during the summer months. Over the past three decades, Caffe Luna Rosa has become a Delray Beach landmark. But unlike some other landmarks, the charm of Luna Rosa appeals to both locals and tourists. Menu items are named after local politicians (our editor Jeff Perlman has a French Toast dish named in his honor but we prefer the Gary Eliopoulos dish) and the walls are adorned with art work, baseball memorabilia and even a photo of “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen. The décor reflects the personality and the stories of Luna Rosa’s owner Fran Marincola who if you’re lucky will regale you with tales of the Jersey Shore and the Delray shore. The staff is a diverse and loyal mix who takes the time to make everyone feel at home. During the season, scoring a seat at Luna Rosa can be a challenge—especially for its famous brunch. But during the summer you have a great shot at success. We urge you to take it.

Summer price fix menus become “de rigeur “ and bargains are galore. Hunt around and you’ll find summer menus and deals galore. Especially during the week.

3

We love the festivals but…we catch a break during the summer months allowing us locals to move freely about the avenue. The season is really busy in Delray, but there’s a nice rhythm to the summer months. Weekends aren’t packed with special events, parking is abundant and our favorite places to shop and dine are less hectic. So we urge you to get out and walk this summer. Delray is a pedestrian town and summer is a great time to soak up the sites and cool off at a local bar or yogurt shop. Shop local, year-round, but especially during the slower summer months. And walk the avenue and beach. It’s free and it’s a South Florida rarity.

4

Nothing beats July 4th in Delray. Patriotic bike parades, sand sculpting contests, incredible fireworks over the ocean and grilling on A1A are just some of the activities. Oh and don’t forget the fireworks which are synchronized to music. The best place to watch the fireworks is at the beach, but if you don’t like sand and crowds and want to avoid the traffic, find a friend with a downtown condo, book a stay at a local hotel or watch from a western vantage point and then scoot when the show is finished. If you are on the sand, exercise patience and please be mindful of the dunes. We need them.

ocks 5

Art Cinema at the Crest Theatre returns for the summer. Watch and discuss great films, escape the heat and if you join the Delray Center for the Arts admission is free. We are huge fans of the Crest Theatre, the ambience, the A/C, the comfortable chairs and the history. The Cinema Series allows you to sit in comfort and then enjoy good conversation with cinephiles. It’s a film lover’s dream. Visit www.delraycenterforthearts.org for a full schedule.

6

Stay cool at the Pompey Park pool. Here’s one can’t miss event: Saturday, July 26 from 12 p.m. to 3:00 pm check out “Family Splash Games.” Such as? Water Basketball, Underwater Hockey, Watermelon Relays, and much more. The Pompey Park Pool, located on the northside of West Atlantic is a community treasure and open to the public. On the southside of West Atlantic check out the Catherine Strong Splash Park to cool off. Great for kids of all ages and named after the first female mayor in the city’s history. The park was built several years ago as a result of the 2005 Parks Bond. It’s a beauty.

7

The water is warm. Delray Beach sea temperatures peak in the range 29 to 30°C (84 to 86°F) on around the 10th of August, according to Surf Forecast.com. Compare that to La Jolla, California where the temps range from 66 to 70 degrees. That means wet suits in Cali and board shorts in Delray. We’ll take the warm surf any day.

Have a safe and fun summer. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | July 2014 61

Dr. Elan Schrier knows the healing power of good chiropractic care. I went to a chiropractor and had a treatment and it went away in one week.”

A lot has happened to Dr. Schrier since those teenage years, but he never forgot how powerful this healing modality can be. What separates Dr. Elan from other Chiropractors is that he practices a gentle type of care that doesn’t involve cracking, twisting or popping. “There is no bending or twisting – the adjustment is done with the

The Infrared thermal nerve scan looks for inflammation in the body and is done before and after treatment. Part of this diagnosis comes from an in house X-ray machine. Unlike traditional Xray equipment this one is laser aligned and measures a misaligned vertebrae down to a tenth of a degree. “The more specific the adjustment is to the body the better the results will be and the longer it will last,” he said. There are other subtle differences you will notice when you enter this pristine yet modern office. The consultation room has a square wood table in the middle of the room with matching chairs. There is also a small stand for an iPad for checking out your test results or treatment plan. This more informal room had a purpose that Dr. Schrier deemed important. “This room does not have a desk like some offices because I wanted to make it less intimidating and more inviting. Everything here is digital and we can view the X-rays, posture pictures and treatment with the patient throughout treatment.” Dr. Schrier also has a Posture Analyzer, which is used for patients when they come for their first visit. If the posture is incorrect, according to Dr. Schrier, then it puts stress on joints, nerves and spine. “The posture analyzer is a good indicator of a patients overall health. Our belief is that every person should live a healthy pain free life.” A pain free existence often seems like a far off miracle to some. But for Dr. Schrier’s Patient Jackie getting digital x-rays that will be analyzed for misalignment

patients that dream can come true. “I was having sinus issues, neck pain, and sciatica and was depressed. When I went to my doctors they said everything was fine. I didn’t want to complain for fear they would pull out a prescription pad and tell me to take drugs. Two chiropractors stopped me and said I needed an adjustment but I didn’t trust them. Then I met Dr. Schrier. After one neck adjustment I quickly returned to the woman I was 20 years ago. I have an 80 percent reduction of pain in my neck, sciatica and foot pain, and I feel good again. I sleep better and the quality of my life has improved dramatically. I am very happy I went to see Dr. Schrier,” said Rosanne Patsy. This success doesn’t surprise Dr. Schrier. He knows that a lot of people like Rosanne can successfully be healed of ailments ranging from low back pain to carpal tunnel syndrome, migraine headaches, digestive disorders, depression, sleep disorders, inner ear disorders (for adults and children), TMJ and fibromyalgia. His philosophy is that healing comes from within and that safe modern Chiropractic treatment allows the body to heal naturally. “Research has shown there is a correlation between the immune system, respiration and the spine/nervous system. An improperly functioning nervous system can cause poor health.” Dr. Schrier has also seen improvements with chronic back pain patients. Matthew Lasky is one of them. “I suffered with debilitating back pain for 14 years. The older I got the more I realized I could not be a prisoner of my body like this. But I was skeptical of Chiropractic care. Then I met Dr. Elan. After my first adjustment I felt like a new man. I

eventually felt like I was given superpower because I am now able to do things I hadn’t done in such a long time. I am so excited about my life now that I have been given this gift of healing. Take it from one of the world’s biggest skeptics of Chiropractic care - Dr. Elan’s methods are truly genius.” The reason for this positive feedback from Dr. Schrier’s patients is because he is truly in the healing business. He believes in the body’s ability to heal itself with a little help. And he is dedicated to finding out the best (and least invasive) way to do just that. Dr. Schrier invites you to stop by for a complimentary consultation to discuss your health concerns. He is kind, gentle and dedicated to your good health. While you’re there don’t forget to rest a while in the Relaxation Room ( that helps your adjustment last longer). It is there you can sit on a leather zero gravity chair surrounded by the restorative dim lighting, meditation music and heavenly scent. You’ll be glad you did. ALLURE BY THE SEA The Day Spa From Heaven By diane feen

{

pHOTOs BY MELISSA KORMAN

If you’ve been to Allure by the Sea then you know that this lovely serene space is always up to the challenge of making client’s look and feel beautiful.

Lindsey maintains her glowing skin by having a deep pore cleansing facial once a month with Ela

It’s one thing to offer hair, nails, face and body treatments, but another to help clients feel like they’re in a heavenly space. That’s the goal at this white Cape Cod style day spa owned by seasoned esthetician Ela Molczan. Of course it helps that Allure by the Sea is right near the sea (blocks from the ocean) but that alone would not secure it a spot in the top tier of day spas. Although Molczan lives and breathes the beauty business – she is also adamant that her staff (and their treatments) heal whatever ails you. She wants guests to look their best by way of the perfect haircut, hair color, facial, massage, nail color, waxing, make-up and unique products. You don’t have to go far to hear the words that all day spa owners cherish. “Good skin care is important to me and that is what Ela offers. She is really unique and cares about healthy skin. I don’t have to wear much make-up because my skin is radiant. I also don’t have any sun damage or wrinkles. Ela sends me home with the perfect products as well. As soon as I walk into Allure by the Sea I feel so good, it’s

a refreshing and enjoyable place. I go every month for facials,” said Chloe Bedenbaugh. Ela has been working as an esthetician for 23 years and has a long list of clients that worship at her beauty altar. She gives amazing facials and is adamant that a good facial will clean your pores, lighten dark spots, help those with rosacia and prevent skin cancer. She also has products for the skin and hair that are unique in the marketplace. Most are from Europe and designed to help prevent skin damage and wrinkles. One of her newest lines is from Tizo, and is a mineral based sun screen for sensitive and regular skin. “You don’t get break-outs when you use mineral sunscreen and they have products for sensitive skin that are water resistant,” said Ela. They also have a great line by Sothys of Paris. If you were to ask clients why they come to Allure by the Sea it’s for the combination of expertise, products, customer service and knowledge of their craft. “I come to Allure by the Sea for manicures and pedicures. I am a new client, but I consider myself a dedicated and forever client. Before coming here I was never satisfied. This place just blew me away because it’s clean, the atmosphere is pleasant and my nails never looked so good. I have also heard great things about their other services,” said Rita, an attorney from East Delray. Word of mouth of one of the best ways to get clients, and no one knows that better than Ela. Her clients come from as far away as Australia and the UK, but when they return to Florida they visit Allure by the Sea. So do the locals. Rachael Glever typically goes to this upbeat airy day spa to have her hair cut and colored by Meredith. But just last month she brought her three sisters, mom and grandmother for a day of beauty. The occasion was her beachfront wedding in Delray Beach. “The day of my wedding I had my family come with me to Allure Day Spa for hair and makeup. I love it there because it’s private and intimate and Meredith is awesome. They served us fruit, veggies and drinks and they made it a really great experience,” said Glever. Meredith Yannon cuts hair at Allure by the Sea and has a reputation for excellence. She listens to her clients, finds out about their lifestyles (and preferences) and then does her magic. “I pay attention to what my clients want and give them the proper attention when they’re in my chair. We want them to feel their best when they leave, and to come back,” said Meredith. You don’t have to tell that to Paula Saccomanno and her husband Dennis. They come once a month for haircuts and other treatments

and couldn’t be happier with the results. “Meredith is the best. She takes her time and does what you ask her to do. Other people do what they want to do. Dennis also loves it there too. It’s so peaceful and serene that sometimes we fall asleep. It’s also immaculately clean and their products are the best. I get compliments on my hair all the time.” Sean Molloy and his wife Corina Macias Molloy feel the same way. Sean goes for massages two or three times a month and recently had what he calls the perfect massage from Stephanie. “I have had massages all over the world, and I live in a country club community, but no one gives massages as good as Allure by the Sea,” said Sean, who travels a lot for his real estate business. Sean and Corina also go to Allure by the Sea for haircuts. “I have been getting my hair cut for the past 13 years by the same person, but recently Meredith cut my hair. She is

so good, she knew exactly how to cut my hair, it was perfect. Allure by the Sea is like a 5-Star salon but it’s down to earth, which I like.” It is testimonials like these that make Ela (and her staff) proud of their achievements. They love what they do and are happy that clients clamor to have treatments at their serene courtyard Day Spa. “When people come here they love the treatments, the make-up for special occasions and the music. We give the best customer service, everyone kisses me when they leave,” said Ela with a smile. Ela invites everyone to experience the Allure by the Sea Day Spa. She guarantees that you will leave happy, healthy and beautiful. ALLURE BY THE SEA 1206 E Atlantic Ave Delray Beach (561) 276-3138 http://www.allurebythesea.com

pHOTOs BY MELISSA KORMAN

Once you enter the ‘Board Room,’ you step into a water oasis for surfers, ocean lovers, and offering a little bit of everything to do with the relaxed, beach life.

The tranquil blue walls, boards of all sizes lining the walls, cases of jewelry, flowing beach dresses and brand apparel for youth, women and men, and a relaxed couch and reggae jams make customers feel as if they are on the beach or riding a wave. That was the atmosphere that owner Adam Runyon wanted to portray when he first opened the doors some three years ago. Since then, Board Room has remained your neighborhood surf and paddle board and apparel boutique with so much more. dle board or surf board for them. “What sets us apart is our customized store offering a wide selection of unique brands, customer service and quality. We sell what we feel is the best of the best, and not necessarily the most expensive,” says Runyon. Brand names are limitless…Toms, Vissla, Calypso St. Barth, Quiksilver, Olukai, Lightning Bolt, and many more. Anything you need for the beach and the water life, you can find at Board Room, from Starboard and Fanatic boards and men’s and women’s clothing, sunglasses, shoes, jewelry, skateboards, paddle boards, and other apparel and accessories.

“For the women, we have an upscale boutique, and men have a surf shop, and many families enjoy the whole experience,” says Runyon. The owner grew up paddle boarding and skating and enjoying being on the water. Also, watching his grandfather own a successful garment and wholesale company, Runyon has combined his expertise in retail and his passion for the ocean. His love for the beach town of Delray Beach also ignites the continued growth of the boutique. “There are not many stores where kids can buy a surfboard, and women can buy Tahitian pearls. The entire family can find something they like. It pays to be different. We don’t have what everyone else has and our customers notice that. Plus, we are just 300 yards from the ocean. You can’t get better than that,” says Runyon. Besides a large inventory of clothing and accessories, they even offer paddle board and surf board lessons, sales and rentals. The boards range in height, size and shape, and the staff will help you find the right customized fit, and then will show you how to excel on the water. Some of the long boards can fit an entire family, you can even bring your dog! “We have products for every age, from toddlers to adults, including top brands. We guide our customers every step of the way and we provide the best in customer service. That is the key to keep them coming back,” says Omar Hernandez. While the business is family owned and operated, Runyon says the customers are part of that family. Many visitors come back year after year to

find a new board or outfit for the Ave. Locals stop in daily just to say hello and catch up on a fun day of surfing the waves. “We get to know a lot of the families that live in Delray Beach and those that are visiting. Many come back and say it’s their favorite store. Many families go paddle boarding together and it has brought their family closer together,” says Runyon, adding, “Paddle boarding has become so popular because it is a great way to exercise and get people out on the water without having to buy a boat. It also builds relationships, and being out in the ocean while on a paddleboard is very peaceful.” All in all, a visit to the Board Room can be a very relaxing experience and you are sure to find something you like! Runyon and his staff find it rewarding to provide great quality products and exemplary customer service to all their customers. “It’s about building relationships and making everyone happy. The best part is when people come in and they are happy and you realize that you are doing a good service. There are not many places you can go to and come back and say this is the best. We have customers that come back and tell us about their positive experience with their new paddle board and we see many walking around town wearing our clothes. It’s just a great feeling,” says Runyon. Board Room 1155 East Atlantic Ave Delray Beach - 561-330-4203 Open 7 days a week from 9 am to 6 pm.

Have you seen the brand new education website, www.pbcedu.org? By LINDA BROWN

{

If you haven’t , go to the web and take a tour of education in Palm Beach County, including all of the schools that serve Delray Beach.

The website is the result of a herculean effort by the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County to present a more comprehensive look at education in our community and to overcome old perceptions with a more balanced look at the state of schools preK through post graduate. The idea sprang from a goal setting workshop the BDB board held a few years back in Palm Beach. At that retreat, business leaders lamented that perception was lagging reality when it came to Palm Beach schools. None of the business leaders gathered in the room that day had their heads in the sand—they understood that while progress was being made there were real issues and challenges still to be overcome. But there was also a strong sentiment that education had evolved in Palm Beach County and that the whole picture was being captured by either the media or companies looking to locate here. So over the course of several months, a 40 member BDB committee that included a cross section of business leaders and educators from public, private and parochial schools began meeting to discuss how to better market and present the true state of education in Palm Beach County. The public/private partnership resulted in PBCedu.org, an attractive site that enables visitors to see the whole range of educational options and programs available. The website, PBCedu.org, marks the beginning of the task force’s ef72 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

fort to market and communicate the quality educational opportunities that exist in the county. Additional initiatives include integrating positive educational messages in all economic development marketing materials, creating a system for matching student interns with employers, ensuring that high schools have employers at job fairs from the industry clusters prevalent in Palm Beach County and continuing to collaborate with CareerSource Palm Beach County and the Education Commission. “When it comes to education, perception is not reality. A strong educational system is critical to economic development,” said Kelly Smallridge, President and CEO of the BDB. The site features mapping capabilities allowing visitors to look at educational options in different parts of the county and videos that

bring the programs to life. People familiar with the history of education in Delray know that city support for local schools has been very strong. Delray Beach was one of the first cities to form an Education Board and hire a full time education coordinator, Janet Meeks. The city has also spent millions of dollars assisting the district with programs, facilities and the like. The effort to change the conversation about local schools started in Delray in the late 80s, when the developers of Andover, a local subdivision found that they were having a hard time selling homes to families with children. Why? Because of the poor perception and in some cases reality of Delray schools during that era. Local realtors used to refer to the problem as the “Delray dilemma.” Led by Andover developer Tom Fleming, later a key figure in the development of Pineapple Grove, the city and residents developed “Sharing for Excellence” , a detailed blueprint to improve local schools. Sharing for Excellence led to the construction of a new Carver Middle School on Barwick Road, the addition of several special programs including a Montessori Magnet at S.D. Spady Elementary School and physical improvements to school campuses—all in an effort to make the schools more attractive and better performing. The new PBCEdu.org website dovetails with Delray’s ongoing efforts which are funneled through the work of the city’s Education Advisory Board. With school beginning in August, take a tour and learn more about local educational opportunities.

Tomorrow’s Promise Community School By LINDA BROWN

{

Marjorie Waldo, the principal of Tomorrow’s Promise Community School in Delray Beach, began calling her students “Firewalkers” after years of witnessing their strength and resilience.

This past June, Tomorrow’s Promise celebrated its final graduation ceremony for nineteen of Ms. Marjorie’s Firewalkers. After twelve years of building an extended family for hundreds of Palm Beach County’s neediest students, the school voluntarily closed its doors on June 30, 2014. Increased competition and declining enrollment left the team unable to support the financial demands of operating the school. Tomorrow’s Promise spent a dozen years recovering 16 to 21 year old dropouts from economically disadvantaged families and providing education and support, leading to high school diplomas and post-secondary education and employment. The school worked from a whole child model based in healthy and positive relationships with its students; they provided assistance to the students and their families

by providing counseling, tutoring, mentoring, food, transportation, access to scholarships, and opportunities to participate in art, dance, and theater experiences in addition to research based and intensive models of instruction. Tomorrow’s Promise Community School’s vision to develop and grow students who were at risk, and to provide them with the opportunity for academic achievement and personal success which might otherwise seem impossible, grew from the singular vision of Johnny Pun, a local police officer. He saw a need for community policing in our City and, with enough charm and charisma for several men combined, joined forces with Fred Glass, also a member of the Delray Beach Police Department and with Loren Sheffer, the then owner of Borton Volvo Volkswagen. These three men enlisted the City’s help and the Police Depart-

ment’s as well. As a result of these innovative and passionate community leaders, Tomorrow’s Promise, then Delray Youth Vocational Charter School, was born in 2002. The school opened its doors to 25 young men and women and within two years there was a waiting list twice the size of their enrollment. By 2005, the school moved into a bigger space with an enrollment nearing 100 students. Johnny’s death in 2005 was devastating – to the entire school community. From the students and families that he and his team offered hope to, to the staff of Tomorrow’s Promise and the city partners and his family and friends, Ms. Marjorie and her Firewalkers were all broken. Somehow, Johnny’s vision and the intensity of his passion left the school’s staff and students strong enough to keep going, and, in the years following his death, Tomorrow’s Promise continued to serve students from Jupiter to Loxahatchee to Boca. At least 1000 students, and 200 diplomas later, the ripple effect of the school’s work will last a lifetime on many of the most needy children and families of Palm Beach County. Margaret Mead said it best, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Now that Tomorrow’s Promise has closed its doors, the last graduating class of Ms. Marjorie’s Firewalkers is moving forward. Graduate Amber Mercado quoted Winnie the Pooh in her speech June 2nd, “Always remember, you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Anyone that ever met one of Tomorrow’s Promise’s incredible students would surely agree with Pooh.

Seaside Builders and realtor Linda Lake know a good thing when they see it. That’s why they teamed up together to bring seven luxurious homes to the market.

The new exclusive residences are in the Lake Ida community of Delray Beach. But these are not just any homes. Seaside is building single family Island style homes with all of the amenities that discerning luxury homebuyers want. That means cathedral ceilings, bright sunny rooms, contemporary innovative design detail, large Great Rooms, outdoor covered lanais for entertaining and family gatherings, lush tropical landscaping, balconies and open loft spaces. It is because of these contemporary and upscale advantages that Linda Lake of Fite Shavell & Associates contacted Seaside with the idea to sell them the property. “I was excited to bring in a high quality reputable builder like Seaside to the Lake Ida neighborhood because I knew they would develop a contem-

porary and upscale development of homes.” The project, called The Grove at Lake Ida, is being built now. And, if you purchase one of these homes (that are each unique in style and detail) you can have it customized to your specifications and individual lifestyle. “If you buy a home at The Grove at Lake Ida soon you will have the opportunity to select colors, loft space, outdoor lanai detail, make upgrades, chose flooring and other interior decisions,” said Lake, of Fite Shavell, the exclusive marketing agent for The Grove at Lake Ida. If you’re not familiar with the Lake Ida neighborhood you should know that it is just a few miles from Delray’s luscious beaches and blocks from the bustling downtown. The Lake Ida residential community is made up of charming tree lined streets, parks, a recre-

ational lake with water sports, fishing, parks, playgrounds and areas for jogging, walking or biking. It is also close to the renowned Delray Beach Playhouse. ‎”We meticulously studied several of the most historically significant homes in Lake Ida as they relate to character, scale, materials, and details. We designed The Grove at Lake Ida to be consistent with those very same characteristics. Front porches, portococheres, board and baton siding, and rooftop dormers are all expressed in the projects of ‘Old Florida’ vernacular,” said project Architect Rich Jones. The homes have two-car garages, private pools with cool finishes, decorative outdoor lighting, soaking tubs, gourmet kitchens, custom crown molding and enough luxurious

amenities to impress you. There are one and two story homes available that range from over 3,000-square-feet to 3,200-square-feet of indoor living space. “We have ventured into the Lake Ida neighborhood with an exciting state-of-theart project consisting of seven island style homes. They are sunny and bright with metal and tile roofs, open floor plans, outdoor extended living spaces, swimming pools, lush native landscaping and are available in one and two story models,” said Tom Laudani, coowner of Seaside Builders. Seaside, a hands-on builder of luxury homes in Palm Beach County, has an excellent design team and a full-time construction crew. Their attention to detail is unparalleled, and they do their own framework and millwork so clients get the home of their dreams. That is why Seaside has teamed up with real estate agent Linda Lake of Fite Shavell & Associates. “Linda and I have worked together in a builder/broker capacity and been very successful in the beach area. Now we are teaming up with her on our new project called The Grove at Lake Ida. Linda understands (and appreciates) our dedication to perfection and the top quality luxury homes that we consistently build. We are excited to continue this relationship to The Grove at Lake Ida project,” said Laudani. Fite Shavell & Associates, the leading luxury real estate firm in the Palm Beaches, has national experience and a global approach to selling real estate. “We combine flexibility with traditional values that clients trust. We are committed to personalized service, expert guidance with absolute integrity,” said Lake, who has been a top producing real estate agent in South Florida for the past 25 years. Some of the details that make The Grove at Lake Ida homes so desirable are the hardwood floors, eight-foot interior doors, recessed lighting, Wi-Fi/Cat 5 automation and a security system. Each home also has hurricane impact rated windows and doors, concrete block and stucco construction, outdoor covered lanai, Caesarstone counters and custom wood cabinetry. The bathrooms

have custom wood cabinets, soaking tubs, custom chrome hardware and fixtures, glass shower enclosures and doors and porcelain tile floors. Each home at The Grove at Lake Ida comes with interior design services, up-grade packages, builder warrantees, personalized service, on-site supervision and a long term commitment to the community. “We have our own definite style when building homes. We are meticulous when it comes to unique details, moldings, outdoor living spaces, sophisticated styling and interiors. Above all customer service is paramount,” adds Laudani. That is why Lake is so excited about her continued relationship with Seaside Build-

ers. She urges all potential home buyers to come and see what The Grove at Lake Ida is all about. The community is well known for its idyllic landscaping and community values. But price is not the only thing that gets the owner of Price Flooring in high gear. “If you do what you say you are going to do then everyone is happy,” said the recent recipient of the 2014 Delray Beach People’s Choice Award for flooring. And there are a lot of happy customers at Price Flooring. So much so that Ray recently opened a new showroom for his kitchen and bath company called Priceless Kitchens and Baths. Why would a flooring veteran of so many years enter the competitive world of kitchen and bath supplies? “We had so many customers asking us where they can go to get a new kitchen built without drama and mistakes so we decided to go into that business,” said Ray. There is another reason for Price Floorings continued success. They have their own installers and showroom designers who make sure that all jobs are done properly. They also put a high priority on workmanship and quality, and it shows.

“We have seven people working in the showroom and we do over 100 installations a month. People know they can trust us,” said Ray. Price Flooring also carries new products that benefit customer’s lifestyles and priorities. Their Shaw gallery of carpets is one of the largest around and they recently introduced a soft natural carpet made in the USA that comes in 42 different SKU’s and 50 colors. Called Caress by Shaw it is made of Anso® nylon and is soft, stain resistant and inspired by nature. The R2X stain resistant quality is something that Shaw developed to provide durability and wearability for people who wanted a natural softness with strong endurance. The carpets are recyclable and have an extended warrantee. Price Flooring also has a new way to help you get the area rug of your dreams. “We have a Custom Area Rug Program that allows you to design your own area rug for your home. You can put any border, trim or color on it and design it on your computer and then we’ll have it made for you,” said Ray, who added that Price Flooring has an extensive selection of rugs from textured, to looped, patterned, twisted, Berber, shag and more. They also added a larger selection of glass and mosaic tiles for backsplashes or accent areas in kitchens, bathrooms, showers, swimming pools, fireplaces and beyond. These small decorative glass, stone and tiny color-filled tiles are available in over 1000 styles and colors. They range from bright fluorescent hues to more natural stone shapes and finishes. “It’s just unheard of to have this amount of mosaic tile selection. But we saw a bigger demand and decided to fill it with prices that are affordable,” said Ray. When it comes to tile, laminate and wood flooring Price has you covered, so to speak. They have tile for as low as 99 cents per-square-foot and offer stylish porcelain tiles that mimic their wood counterparts. There are porcelain tiles with wood grain stain and others that look almost like linen with designer quality and fanfare. They also have a full selection of ceramic tiles and laminate flooring in rich colors or savvy neutrals. “We now have what we call ‘Price Busters’ which are lower prices than many of our competitors. We can do that because we import or stock so much of it we can offer wholesale prices to our retail customers.”

Ray Price and Anthony Luria, of Priceless Kitchens inc.

Since Ray started out in the flooring business over 27 years ago it is fitting that his retail stores reflect this expertise. This demand for excellence and expertise is what propelled him into the kitchen and bath business. “We are now a one-stop-shop for all of your home needs. We can customize your bathroom or kitchen needs and make sure you get the job done right. We also sell shower heads and kitchen faucets with water purifiers built in.” It also helps that all installers of Price Flooring and Priceless Kitchens and Baths are licensed, Insured and bonded. The do work from Broward county to Palm Beach county and offer free in-home estimates. “We deal directly with manufacturers of carpet, wood, laminate and marble flooring. We have products for every budget as well as custom tile bathrooms complete with vanity. Come visit our 4,000-square-foot showroom for the latest flooring trends or our new Priceless Kitchens and Baths showroom around the corner,” said Ray. Price Flooring also does commercial jobs as well. To help with their growing flooring business Ray hired his brother Peter Price. Peter, who was in retail sales, is part of their affable sales team in their Delray Beach showroom on the NW corner of Congress Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. Ray invites everyone to stop by the Price Flooring Showroom and the new Priceless Kitchens and Baths Showroom to see what

all the fuss is about. You will be dazzled by their new selection of products and the variety of styles and design options that will fit your home and your lifestyle. “We do it all now,” added Ray. IAN MELLUL

A Young Leader Making A Difference By Diane Feen

{

Photo by melissa korman

It’s pretty easy to see that Ian Mellul is destined for greatness. The 20-year-old Delray resident was President of his freshman and sophomore class at Boca Raton High School and Parliamentarian of the Palm Beach County Association of Student Councils.

He was also elected President of the Florida Association of Student Councils, student representative to the Palm Beach County School Board and student representative to the Palm Beach County Parent Teacher Student Association. To say that Mellul rarely sits on the sidelines is an understatement. That is why many in the community are rooting for this young man who just returned from Washington as a budding political superstar. The reason? He just finished an internship at the White House. “When I got a call from the White House Personnel Department I was doing laundry and thought perhaps there was a mistake. After discussing public policy, my goals, experience and qualifications, I was accepted as a White House intern in the Presidential Personnel Department.” This coveted internship meant Mellul had to scale back his course load at George Washington University to work full-time in the White House. As an intern he was on the recruitment team that managed the Presidents political appointments for various agencies. “The people who work for the President have a true sense of public service. They work long hours and are not paid much. I learned that people matter and that everyone brings something unique to the table. There is also something very important about the diversity of our life experiences.” Diversity is one thing that Mellul has an easy time understanding. In high school he created a state wide community service project known as “Operation Not Forgotten.” This initiative was on behalf of students across the state to help support military families. He was also a field director in a Boca Raton City Council race while in high school. And in his freshman year in college he was a finance intern for Bill Nelson and a legislative intern for Senator Brian Schatz. “I

July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

took classes from 8 am to 10:30 pm two days a week and the other three days I got hands-on experience attending committee meetings and preparing briefing binders for the Senator.” To know Mellul is to know that he is rarely a rookie intern. He rises to every occasion with a brand of self assurance and earnestness that captivates those around him. Just ask Andy Winer, Chief of Staff for Senator Schatz. “As a smart, hard-working, and capable intern, Ian quickly earned the trust of our office. His responsibilities expanded from assisting with front office duties to helping legislative staff prepare important materials for the Senator.” You would think that Mellul’s grades would suffer from all his political work on the Hill, but quite to the contrary, he was admitted into GW University’s Honors Program. He also spent a summer (last year) as a field organizer for Cary Glickstein’s Mayoral campaign. Again he took away some philosophical capital. “Mayor Glickstein is not afraid to do the right thing even if it is not popular. He does what is right for the people. That is the real reason to work in politics.” President Obama told him (and the other White House interns) the same thing when he spoke to the outgoing interns last month. “At the end of my internship we all met in the East Room of the White House and the President spoke to us. The two most important things he said were: ‘Don’t go into politics just for a title or an office but run for something because you want to make a difference.’ He also told us all to follow our passion.” That is exactly what this young Delray fellow is doing. He knows public service is his calling and that working in the White House for the President was a rare privilege. He also understands that the rarified world of national politics is somewhat of a surreal situation for a sophomore in college. Yet Mellul was

able to balance them both delicately with a sense of purpose and priority. “The most surreal thing was that my dorm was four blocks from the White House and at 7:45 am I would walk through campus in a suit and tie and see my friends. But I walked another two blocks and I would enter the gates of the White House. It was a privilege to work for the President’s team - every day was a challenge.” It is challenges that young Mellul thrives on. And it is challenges that make him standout among his peers. He credits mentor (and friend) Jeff Perlman for much of his enthusiasm and passion for the political sphere. And it is Perlman who sees Mellul’s highly developed partisan passion. “Ian is a very special guy. He’s so accomplished at such a young age, but Ian is a lot more than a resume. He’s someone who radiates warmth, smarts and leadership. Ian is not just book smart; he’s people smart and has a very big heart. That’s what separates the good ones from the great ones. He genuinely cares about people and is drawn to public service so he can help others. He’s a leader in the best sense of the word. He’s going to do great things, I’m sure of it,” said former Mayor Jeff Perlman. Current Mayor Cary Glickstein couldn’t agree more. “Ian is a homegrown talent who is impressive in many respects. He’s the kind of young man who I hope decides to come back to our community with his good ideas and innovative approach when his time in Washington is finished.” We applaud this young man who understands civic responsibility and knows that making a difference in the world is far greater than being different. As Mellul (who is an accomplished magician) likes to say, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” With everyone weighing in on this young political wunderkind he doesn’t have to worry about tomorrow, he just has to stay the course. “I am proud of what Ian has accomplished and know he has a bright future ahead,” adds Winer.

Vive Delray The Coffee Way

THE GRIND CAFÉ By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

{

Great coffee houses are a thing of legends. In Paris great thinkers would congregate over a brew or a blend. And in Manhattan playwrights and intellectuals spent hours discussing their world views and artistic bent at coffee houses.

In many instances restaurateurs just forgot about coffee houses – but not Howard Molder and Art Schulman. They forged ahead into the dense playing field of coffee beans, coffee blends, roasted flavors and international coffees from around the world. It wasn’t a big stretch for Molder, who was in the coffee business for many years, but it was an act of faith to bring his culinary wisdom to uncharted territory: West Delray Beach. “There is a difference between a coffee shop and a coffee house. In the later you have a professional Barista who knows 96

July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

about the coffee beans and the grinds,” said Molder, who credits Meghan for bringing coffee expertise to his chic yet comfy coffee house, The Grind Café at The Marketplace. Since Molder and Schulman know that man (and woman) cannot exist on coffee alone they added other delicacies to make customer’s endorphins peak. They offer wraps and Panini’s with turkey, chicken, ham and other deli meats, but the object of much affection is their desserts. It is this realm that Molder enjoys the thrill of the hunt. “I search the globe for decadent des-

serts that will make our customer’s happy. Many of our sweet stuff is baked on the premises and served fresh, which most of our customers really enjoy.” One of the most popular (yet unusual) items is called a Macaron. This French delight is made of ground almonds and soft meringue with a creamy center. They come in flavors like peanut butter and jelly, pistachio and maple rhubarb and taste like heaven has just landed on your tongue. They also have the best Carrot Cake this side of the Mississippi and Red Velvet cake that is the first thing to fly out the door on a busy day. There’s also Reese’s Peanut Butter Pie, Salted Caramel Cheesecake, Chocolate Blackout Cake, Triple Mouse, Chocolate fantasy Mouse, Amaretto Cheesecake as well as assorted Fresh Croissants. If variety is the spice of life then The Grind Café is living large. That’s why locals like Arnie Werther and his wife Joni frequent this comfy spot with the outdoor café quite frequently. “We come for everything; the turkey wraps with red pepper, the macarons and the coffee. We also love the music,” said Arnie. It is music that adds another sweet spot for The Grind Café customers. Friday and Saturday nights they have live music and Thursday night is Karaoke night. Liz Sharp has been playing to rave reviews and Jonny Loew brings Elvis melodies to life. The Grind Café is also open for Breakfast from 8:30 am to 12 pm most days of the week and from 9 am to 3:00 on Sunday. They serve the freshest orange juice on the planet (the juicer is an exotic find from Europe) as well as eggs, omelettes, breakfast pastries (to die for) and small plates of fruit, bacon, sausage and nova with bagel or croissant. You also have your choice of exotic coffees, cappuccino, espresso, latte’s and teas of all stripes. Since Molder is a foodie of epic proportion he wants to make sure that customers experience unique frozen coffee drinks. “We import our coffee from the finest coffee makers around the world. Each has its own nuances and flavors. Some are bold. Some are mellow, but all are amazing with no bitter aftertaste,” he said. They have coffee from Ecuador, Ethiopia, Brazil, Kenya and Florida. They also serve wonderful Frappuccinos with names like Coffee Toffee, Chai, Vanilla Chai, Mocha and Cookies and Cream. You can add a shot of espresso to your drink, or have coffee or Frappuccino with soy milk,

almond milk, whole milk or skim. If you like to live on the edge of decadency (or have a sweet tooth that needs nurturing) try their triple threat, which is Espresso, Cocoa powder, Steamed milk and Chocolate sauce. If you’re in the mood for a terrific sandwich check out their Panini with turkey, basil spread roasted peppers and onions. Served on fresh Ciabatta bread it will hit the spot. You can also customize your sandwich, wrap or Panini with pine nuts, cheese, walnuts, bacon or any of their other sides. “There is no better way to compliment the best coffee than with mouth-watering desserts, baked goods and pastries. From our homemade muffins and brownies, to biscotti that will blow your mind, you will find something you love at the Grind Cafe. Even the most discerning taste buds will dance with joy,” said Schulman. Another dessert that has customers quite joyful are their homemade apricot and raspberry Hamantaschen and Rugelach in cinnamon, cappuccino, blueberry and chocolate cherry. They also have chocolate twists and homemade muffins that are so good you might find yourself craving them at all three meals.

There’s also free Wi-Fi, leather arm chairs, a comfy couch, dark wood porcelain flooring and mood enhancing scone lighting. It’s this combination that has New Orleans born Delray resident Carol delighted with The Grind Café. “We’ve eaten here many times. We love eating here or taking things to go. I love the Mocha cake and the Macarons. It’s very comfortable and family friendly.” It’s people like Carol (and other faithful customers) that make this upscale Coffee House a labor of love for both Molder and Schulman. “There is no better pairing to the best cup of coffee in Delray than with mouthwatering desserts at the Grind Café,” said Molder. “From chocolate cake you would kill for, to cookies that are amazing, no matter what you’re in the mood for you can get it at the Grind Cafe! We also have Glutenfree desserts.” The GRIND CAFÉ The Markeplace 14859 Lyons Road #132 Delray Beach, FL 33446 561-270-2058 www.GrindCafeDelray.com

Winning Recipe By Susan Paulus

Finn-atic Lion Fish with Wilted Greens & Gnocchi in Sage Butter Sauce ingredients

1 pound lion fish 1/3 cup of plain flour 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 large eggs 2 Tablespoons of Meyes Lemon Olive Oil from The Olive Taste of Delray

2 Tablespoon olive oil 2 cloves of garlic, chopped 2 Tablespoons of parsley, chopped Juice of 1/2 lemon 1 Tablespoon butter 1/2 cup white wine 2 teaspoons capers Splash of hot sauce

Note: Use as many local ingredients as possible. Loin Fish - Finn-Atic Fish Co, Delray Green Market Olive Oils - Olive Taste, Pineapple Grove Eggs and butter - Heritage Hen Farm, Delray Beach Greens and onions - Thomas Farms, Delray Green Market Gnocchi - Pasta Amore, Delray Green Market Cooking instructions

Pat lion fish dry with a paper towel. Beat the two eggs in a shallow dish. Add the splash of hot sauce (I used Crystal). Mix the flour, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper in another shallow dish. Taste the flour to check the seasoning and adjust if needed. Heat The Olive Taste of Delray Meyer Lemon and olive oil in a 12 inch skillet over medium high heat until hot. Dip the fish in the egg mixture and then dredge in the flour mixture. Sauté fish in hot oil for about 3 minutes per side or until flakes in the center with a fork depending on the thickness of the fish. Remove the fish to a holding dish. Add the chopped garlic to the pan and cook for about a minute. Add the white wine and lemon juice and reduce by half, about 3 - 5 minutes. Add the butter to the pan and swirl to melt. Add capers and parsley. Remove from heat. Wilted Greens Wash 1 package of spinach or a bunch of Swiss Chard. Chop the greens in to ribbons. In a deep skillet or pan, heat 1 tablespoon of The Olive Taste of Delray Tuscan Herb infused olive oil over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup of chopped onion and cook for 3 - 5 minutes. Add 2 cloves of chopped garlic and cook about a minute. 98

July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Add the greens, 1/2 teaspoon salt, sprinkle of red pepper flakes, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper and stir to mix. Cover the pan and cook for 3 minutes. Stir the greens to mix the top with the more wilted greens on the bottom. Cook covered for another two minutes. Greens will be Southern tender for serving. Adjust seasoning to taste. Remove from heat.

Gnocchi with Sage Butter Sauce Heat about 6 cups of water in a large pan. Salt well, about 2 teaspoons. Bring to a rolling boil. Add 16 frozen Gnocchi. Cook until the gnocchi float. Strain gnocchi reserving 1/2 cup of gnocchi cooking liquid. In a medium skillet heat 1 tablespoon of Tuscan Herb flavored olive oil. Add 1 clove of chopped garlic. Cook for one minute or so. Add one tablespoons of butter and swirl the pan to melt. Cook for about a minute. Add gnocchi and cook for about a minute. Add gnocchi cooking liquid and cook for about two minutes or until thick. Add 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage. To Serve Place half of the greens in the bottom of two serving bowls. Top with fish. Pour the fish sauce over the fish. Place gnocchi and the side of the bowl beside the fish. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and enjoy!

ARTS ║ THE Pineapple People

Pineapple Grove has come into its own as a destination within Delray Beach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Many people from all walks of life have worked hard to make Pineapple Grove what it is today, a laid back arts district where you tend to find locals shopping and dining. They all have one thing in common….they are all characters. Over the next 12 months we’ll meet some of the Pioneers, the Godfathers and the Sons of Anarchy who made it happen. By Stephanie IMMELMAN

The Trailblazers These Pineapple Grove long timers have been around as long as that banyan tree on NE 2nd Avenue and they aren’t going anywhere! All of them are deeply rooted in the Pineapple Grove community. Meet Chris Reich of the Delray Camera Shop. You know, the building with the mural on it. Chris has been in Pineapple Grove since ’68. Joanne Sinchuk moved her book store, Murder on the Beach, from Miami to the Grove 12 years ago and has never looked back. And any late nighter will know Heather Racine hanging with the local cast of characters at their longtime hideout, O’Connor’s Pub.

Heather Joanne Sinchuk

During our time here, we’ve seen Pineapple Grove go from a side street off of Atlantic Avenue, to a thriving shopping destination for our loyal customers. And they can always find a place to park!

We’re happy with the way things have developed in the Grove. We love being part of the community. You’ve got a gym, restaurants, salons, dry cleaner, post office, book store, camera shop. Pineapple Grove is its own entity and has its own identity and O’Connor’s is the local watering hole. We’re happy to have our piece of the pie.

Chris Reich

I love the Grove. After 46 years, where am I gonna go? It’s my home. I spend more time here than anywhere. Luckily I’m blessed with a great group of people to work with. I just get to show up!

Has My Pet Really Evolved?

Y

ou often hear from veterinarians and others in the pet food industry that our pets have evolved through hundreds of years of domestication but what is truth and what is fiction? From a genetic, physiological or anatomical perspective, what has really changed and is it for the better? Let’s take diet as the first example. We are being told that our pets (dogs and cats) have evolved from carnivores to omnivores and are able to live and thrive on processed, carbohydrate-based dry foods. My first question is this, how has their digestive systems changed physiologically and when was this discovered? Since dry kibble pet foods were not even invented until the extrusion process was developed in 1955, are we to believe that the digestive system completely changed in less than fifty years. And if that was even possible, why has the classification of dogs and cats been officially changed? Also, have any of the key components of the domestic dog changed that dramatically from that of its’ wild brother, the wolf? The answer is no! My second point is that dry kibble is found nowhere in nature. No animals in

nature eat biologically dead, processed, cooked food. They eat raw food every day, every time. All the nutrients are in that raw food. Wild animals never buy supplements or vitamins in nature. They seek out foods that will supply them with the essential nutrients they need. So, did our pets also evolve into developing cancer? How about dental problems, allergies, hip and joint issues including any of the hundreds of diseases and conditions we have seen ever since we started exclusively feeding processed pet foods as opposed to real, biologically appropriate diets? How do wolves, fox, coyotes, dingoes and other wild canines survive without vaccines, preventive drugs or modern medicine? Has our modern pet truly evolved into a needy and dependent animal? If this were true then why can our dogs and cats go from being quiet house pets to feral hunters and survivors in only weeks? What about the genetics of our pets? Our domestic dogs can breed with their brothers and sisters, the wolf. This means that the genetics has not changed. Any evolution would create a problem here. They would not be able to procreate.

Yes, we see anatomical differences because of selective breeding for very specific traits but don’t we see that in nature? What about the biggest buck deer having great sets of antlers or the silverback gorilla being the dominate male. Albino and other unnatural traits end up being another animals’ meals as opposed to being protected by our system of animal care. The truth is that our current system of animal care often produces weaker animals as part of the pet population where nature handles it differently. Our increasing use of unnatural diets, synthetic drugs and artificial nutrients all have a negative effect on our pets, often cutting their natural life spans by fifty percent or more. No, pets have not evolved but rather, are adapting to our intrusive, unnatural environment and are simply trying to survive instead of thriving to their fullest potential. misc ║ s-i-n-g-l-e By Nicole Flier

A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “We Go Together, Like hAMBURGER & FRENCH FRIES…NOT!” First dates are a lot like being in Vegas at the Craps table. It’s a roll of the dice. Whenever someone wants to set me up, I usually have my specific set of due-diligence questions before I commit. At 43, I am pretty much a realist, so I am not shooting for the moon or the stars. Simply stated, I am just looking for a like-minded individual who is looking to fall in love. It’s not really rocket science. I was set up with someone last month who appeared to be a pretty solid match. We spoke briefly on the phone, exchanged texts and made a plan to meet for a drink on a Friday night. By his basic stats, it appeared that we had a bunch in common. He was a business owner in the health and fitness industry. We were close in age, both divorced with no kids. I also saw his photo (he was sitting). He didn’t resemble the Elephant Man, so I felt like my odds were rapidly increasing. Now I am no giant at only 5’2’, but my disappointment began within minutes of walking into the bar. Nothing against short peeps since I am clearly in that club, but my date appeared to be substantially shorter than me. With my 4 inch wedge sandals, it put me at an even 5’6” , which in turn made me feel like a cross between Yao Ming (NBA Baller closing in at 7’6”) and Sheena, the Amazon Queen of the Jungle. Strike One! No surprise, I enjoy dining. Yes, I have some food intolerances and some personal food dislikes (red meat, pork) but I am fairly open to trying most things. My date informed me that he doesn’t eat any fish- not even tuna from the can, and keeps a solid diet of hamburgers, potatoes and pasta. It was at this moment that I noticed his mini mid-section “tire” which explained the not so healthy diet choices he makes on a daily basis. For someone who makes a living from the health/fitness industry, he certainly doesn’t practice what he preaches. Strike Two! Now for the enlightening conversations. 114 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Brace yourself folks. With a natural progression of getting to know someone, we chatted about both being married previously. Rule number one on a first date; no bashing your ex -spouse. Rule number two; do not go into a 20 minute dissertation of your entire relationship and why it failed with every last detail. My date began to feel more and more like a therapy session. Strike Three! As if hearing him trash his ex wasn’t enough, the icing for me was that we had zero in common from television (he admits to only watching WWF and UFC), to travel (his vacation hot spot is Orlando, mine is Punta Cana) to the fact that he courageously acknowledged that he is around gyms all day long for work and doesn’t want to hightail it back at night to work at his own personal fitness. The gym is my happy place. Clearly, I am not looking for a burger and fry eating couch potato who thinks watching “The Undertaker” (WWF) on a Saturday night is entertaining and exercise constitutes raising the remote. The date lasted just shy of an hour and the truth be told, he was a nice guy. I arrived at the bar with an open mind but sometimes the cons simply outweigh the pros. In this case, I don’t think there was a single redeeming quality or similarity to substantiate a second date. They say that opposites attract and that the excitement of a new relationship is exploring or creating new and shared common interests. “They” need to get their heads on straight. Nothing in common still means “NADA en COMUN!” Which leads me to my friend “E.” Bless his heart for trying Tinder to meet a quality women. Lucky me, for getting to experience his blind date at our group happy hour. Said date was 30, cute and friendly. When the discussion got to the Showtime series “Ray Donovan,” a few of us engaged in deeper conversation about our love for the plot, the characters and the fact that it was returning for a second season. It was at this juncture that E’s

date bravely admitted that she doesn’t have “premium channels.” Strike one, two and three! “E” ribs me and whispers, “This chick is DONE!! No premium channels- really, WTF???” And here I am worrying that maybe I was a bit harsh and didn’t give “Hamburger Boy” a true chance. But if “E” was going to dismiss a girl based on her cable television plan, I was definitely in the clear from being a picky b***h from hell! At the end of the day, we all have our hangups. Some things can be overlooked and some things are just plain deal breakers. I guess it boils down to what you are willing to concede. Last I checked, a romantic weekend at Disney wasn’t on my bucket list! Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

Delray Beach has a new planning director

{

Dana Little, who most recently served as the urban design coordinator for the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council, has agreed to take the helm of the city’s planning department at a critical time in the city’s history. And for that we should be grateful.

That’s the basics; but as Paul Harvey used to say… ”here’s the rest of the story.” Little comes to Delray with a unique pedigree. As an urban designer/town planner he and the Council’s highly regarded urban design studio have been involved in a myriad of projects including innovative plans for downtown West Palm Beach, Stuart and the Lake Worth Arts District. He has also worked on a guidebook for transit oriented development in Florida. But he also has experience in Delray Beach as one of the key members of a team that helped develop the landmark 2001 Downtown Delray Beach Citizens Master Plan. I was a co-chair of that effort while serving on the City Commission so I had an opportunity to work with Mr. Little and the talented staff at Treasure Coast. So here’s some inside perspective. Managing growth and town planning is not for the faint of heart. Passions run high on both sides of the growth debate. Residents have concerns about height, density, traffic, noise and fears about losing the charm and ambience that defines a community. Others welcome change and see density as an environmentally sound response to sprawl. All of these passionate arguments have to be balanced against private property rights and the desire of property owners to achieve the highest and best use for their land. Dana and his colleagues at Treasure Coast are experts at striking that balance and at raising the level of conversation in a community beyond the tired old

118 July 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

arguments that “all developers are greedy” and concerned neighbors are nothing but “NIMBY’s”. Treasure Coast designed a charrette process that drew a record amount of public participation. Not only did we conduct a formal charrette, but Treasure Coast opened up design studios on Swinton Avenue and invited residents to work with the designers, architects and planners on a vision for their downtown—which for the first time in history would include West Atlantic Avenue to I-95. Dana Little was at the heart of it all even taking the time to redesign some controversial projects in the downtown core in the hope of giving developers and others a new perspective. Delray Beach has a long and proud history of urban design and planning. When FAU did a report on the region a few years back they noted that Delray had a “planning gene.” We have had wonderful staff in our Planning Department over the years that have done the big stuff and the day to day extremely well. Our success is not an accident, but a well designed effort led by citizens, policy makers, land owners, planners, consultants and yes even developers. Dana Little brings national, statewide, regional and local chops to the task at hand, which is planning for an even better, more livable and sustainable Delray. We are in capable hands. Welcome aboard!
