Happy NEW YEAR!

n behalf of the staff of Atlantic Ave Magazine we wish you a happy and healthy New Year. In this issue, you will read about lots of happenings to make your 2015, happier, healthier and more fun. We urge you to take advantage of all Delray Beach has to offer and in the spirit of the holiday season try and find some time to give back as well. This particular Editor’s Note is a personal one for me. So with your indulgence I’d like to wish a fond farewell to two extraordinary women who have played a major role in the success of Delray Beach. Lula Butler is retiring this month after a long and successful career as the city’s Community Improvement Director. Lula had a broad portfolio ranging from running the Building Department in a busy city to working on education issues, race relations, neighborhood improvement programs and civic engagement initiatives. When I was mayor, I used to call Lula’s office the “hub” because it is where I checked in to get a feel for what was happening at City Hall and in the community. We worked very hard during that era and we moved the needle in a major way in large part because of Lula’s incredible ability to see the picture, overcome hurdles and implement ambitious visions. She is irreplaceable. Over the years, we have managed to stay in touch through our work with the Dare 2 Be Great Foundation and other community projects. I have grown close to her family and I cannot express the gratitude that I have for her years of hard work and genuine accomplishment. I challenged Lula on a regular basis back in the day because I was part of a group that wanted to move the “big rocks” and thanks to people like Lula we did. She was a go-to player for many mayors over several decades and this city will miss her insights and her smarts. We won two All America City Awards because she was a key part of a leadership team that knew how to get things done. If you see her on the avenue, say thanks, because she has earned it. Yes, she has earned it. I’d also like to wish Diane Colonna well in her new role as CRA Director in Margate. Diane is my wife, so I am not objective and I admit it. But I think she was a magnificent Planning Director and an even better CRA director for the past 23 plus years. Her calm demeanor, smarts, creativity and desire to get things done is appreciated and evident everywhere you look in Delray Beach. As a good reporter, I always get two sources and so I asked Michael Busha, head of the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council to describe Diane: His words. “Rock star.” Have a wonderful, safe, happy and healthy New Year. Looking at her new patient questionnaire, however, I had to agree, she wasn’t as healthy as she looked. Celeste continued, “My friend Jena raves about you and handed me one of your brochures. She said you made her feel twenty years younger. I want to get what she’s getting!” “Patient-to-patient referral has always been my best source of new patients, but rather than ‘selling the same program’ of tests, supplements, and hormones to everybody, whether they need it or not, I do what a board-certified physician is trained to do, I evaluate each patient individually. Tell me, if there was a miracle tonight, what would be different tomorrow?” “How about tonight? I’d sleep. It seems that I’m up at 3:15 like clockwork every morning to pee, and then I can’t get back to sleep until hours later. And when I wake up for real, I’m destroyed.” “God created night then day; night came first because it’s so important. I want you to wake up fully refreshed, anticipating your day.” “How can I look forward to things when my clothes don’t fit, I need to use hair extensions and acrylics, everything I eat bloats me to where I’m 5-months pregnant, and my girlfriends have more libido towards my husband than I do?” Luckily, not only do I have 80+ minutes to spend with new patients, I also had a box of tissues to hand to Celeste. “All of this is fixable. Instead of using ‘pharmacy’ (or ‘green pharmacy’ of vitamins and hormones) to cover up your symptoms, I prefer a Functional Medicine approach to make your body work properly, the way it did in your 20’s.” “Just up to a few years ago, I was able to eat great tasting food without running to the bathroom, drink champagne at charity events, and still be able to play tennis the next day. Now I’m just spent.” “I’ve seen all this before, and I’m confident we can get you back to optimum health. Let’s finish off our assessment. Besides my history and physical exam, there are some tests I need. Even though you have a concierge physician who did a screening panel, I need to look in depth at your adrenals, thyroid, and other hormones. Food allergies and dysbiosis (bad bacteria in your gut) can cause that bloating, and vitamin insufficiencies are common enough that we have to test for those as well.” “Anything we can start off now?” “Yes! I’ve been practicing this way for over a dozen years, and based upon what I know now, we can start with a little of everything: behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, stuff like that.” I continued, “You don’t have to change your life drastically, but little things will make a big difference.” “Like what?”

Before you leave, I’ll teach you a stretch that decreases that ‘pouch’ at your beltline, and there are a few vitamins that are so obvious for you to start with (but safe to take too).” “But what about that IV therapy that Jena told me about?” “When patients are really sick, or are trying to get the most optimal results yesterday, I do offer injections of vitamins, minerals, glutathione, and other nutrients. For example, iron injections rapidly help hair growth, brittle nails, fatigue, memory/concentration, and muscle cramps (restless legs).” Celeste’s testing did show causes for all her symptoms and on her second visit, a plan specific to her was put in place. Three months later, she was glowing and her visits were now spaced out to where she only had to be seen once every six months. “Next week you get to see both my husband and daughter. Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in January for $50 or less.

ou might be feeling a little sluggish after the recent holiday celebrations, but don’t let that feeling take hold because it’s a New Year! The possibilities are endless for what you can accomplish this year but you have to take the first step to make it all happen. January is International Brain Teaser Month and if you feel like life is like the wrenching “if two trains leave the station at the same time…” scenario, then it’s time to get your brain on point so it can tackle the upcoming 365 days. The library is to the rescue and invites you to attend the Whole Brain Workout course that’s part of the Lifelong Learning Community Institute spring semester. If you feel like you’re losing your edge, this class is for you because you will learn educationally valid memory enhancement strategies that can help you feel more empowered and in control. A number of different areas and brain workout exercises will be covered as well as discussing and practicing helpful memory retention strategies. The course will improve your ability to remember because it will help you to identify the strengths and weaknesses in how your brain works, which sounds amazing to me. But on a more meaningful level, I am severely drawn to the calming nature, deep thought and intrinsic way of thinking of the culture. January is International Creativity Month

The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is featuring a Design for the Senses: Beauty, Form and Function exhibit now through January 18 and you are welcome to study (and get lost in) your own interpretation of form and function. The exhibit is comprised of three distinct exhibitions that highlight the beauty, form and function that is inherent to Japanese craft and design. Examples include folding screen paintings and lacquered boxes, handcrafted lamps, benches and step chests. Inhale the craftsmanship and functionality, breathe in the beauty, hold your new appreciation for space and lines deep in your lungs, and exhale your plan for incorporating more of this in your life. An example of this is “A Most Violent Year,” tentatively to be released nationwide January 1. The National Board of Review voted this violent thriller Best Film. The year is 1981 and the location is New York City at a time when criminals outnumbered cops. Oscar Isaac is Abel Morales, ambitious owner of a fuel distribution company. Jessica Chastain is his tough-as-nails wife Anna, daughter of a powerful mobster. When Morales’ trucks are attacked and highjacked, war heats up on the Brooklyn waterfront. Mills is unjustly accused of murder and he must find the real killer and prove his innocence. The always unpredictable Johnny Depp stars as debonair arts dealer and international man of mystery in “Mordecai.” Charlie Mordecai dodges angry Russians and snooping British Mi5 in search of a stolen painting rumored to have a code that will lead to hidden Nazi gold. Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, Michael Byrne and Guy Burnet co-star. January 30 Kevin Costner stars as a widowed dad with a bi-racial granddaughter in “Black or White.” Octavia Spencer co-stars as the blood grandmother of the girl, whom she thinks should be with her real father. September 19-20 was a banner weekend for rock ‘n’ roll fans; especially those fond of electric guitar. Experience Hendrix at Seminole Hard Rock Live on Friday, September 19 featured some of the best guitarists playing today, all paying tribute to the greatest rock innovator of all time, Jimi Hendrix. Players included Jonny Lang, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Johnson, Rich Robinson, Zakk Wilde and Buddy Guy. Wilde’s thrash metal was a little out of place, but the guy is a speed demon. The most impressive all-around guitarist was Kenny Wayne Shepard, but Buddy Guy had the greatest credibility. He was a friend and contemporary who shared the stage with Hendrix. The next night, Saturday, September 20 at Cruzan Amphitheater was the double treat of former boy wonder Steve Winwood and Florida boy Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers. Winwood, 66, can legitimately claim more than 50 years as a professional musician as he joined Spencer Davis Group in England when he was only 15. Winwood played his greatest hits from that group (“I’m a Man,” “Gimmie Some Lovin’ “), “Traffic,” “Medicated Goo,” “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys”) and Blind Faith (“Can’t Find My Way Back Home”)> Petty was promoting his newest album, “Hypnotic Eye,” but he did not short fans of their favorites. The mood was set with the Byrds’ satirical song “So You Want To Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star,” and Petty and right-hand man, guitarist Mike Campbell, were off and running. Best-sellers included “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” “Into the Great Wide Open,” “I Won’t Back Down” “A Woman in Love,” “Running Down a Dream” and “You Wreck Me.” Petty even joined his buddy Steve Winwood on “Can’t Find My Way Back Home” and “Gimmie Some Lovin’ “ before wrapping up with his signature “American Girl.” Rock ‘n’ Roll is alive and well in South Florida. 46 January 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

1,100 miles away lies an American tropical getaway. The Virgin Islands of the United States, formerly the Danish West Indies were sold to the U.S. by Denmark in 1916. They are currently an organized, unincorporated United States territory in the Caribbean, therefore requiring no passport to travel.

The islands consist of three main islands; Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas, along with many other surrounding smaller islands. Traveling to St. Thomas or St. Croix is not as expensive as you might think. Spirit Airlines offer direct flights from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas for about $200 round trip or American Airlines from Miami for about $300. With a steady temperature averaging 80 degrees and white sandy beaches on turquoise blue water, the USVI are a place not to be missed. Each of the islands is unique. St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan of the three, giving the feeling that it’s the largest; it’s not, St. Croix is, although it is the territorial capital and port of Charlotte Amalie. St. Thomas offers its visitors a huge array of attractions from churches, museums, classic island architecture and shopping. You could see all that St. Croix has to offer in a day trip or you could stay a few days and relax on their gorgeous beaches, play a game of golf, indulge in some glorious water sports or try your luck at the casino! Sciatica… Exploring Cutting Edge

A shocking 80 % of all Americans will experience low back pain at some point in their life. Its epidemic status continues to grow and sufferers seek the most cutting edge approaches to not only ensuring relief but also restoring function. Quite often individuals may also develop associated thigh or lower leg pain termed sciatica. The clinical term sciatica requires clarification. Sciatica simply means “pain in the leg.” It does not mean that the sciatic nerve has been “pinched.” In fact, the sciatic nerve is not involved in most cases of thigh or gluteal pain because it does not supply sensation from this area.

What Is The Cause Of Sciatica? Sciatica can be caused by irritation or trauma to nerve roots within the spinal canal or to peripheral nerves outside of the canal anywhere from the pelvis to the lower leg. Space occupying lesions within the spinal canal such as a bone spur, disc herniation, congenitally narrow canal, infection, metastasis, or mass can be the causative agent. Outside of the canal we find the instigators to be a femur head fracture, incorrectly placed intra-muscular injection, fixation of the sacroiliac joint, and primary bone cancer of the pelvis. The two most common and least diagnosed causes are facet joint syndrome and piriformis contracture. Facet joints help to guide motion of the spine letting us bend forward and back and side to side. They also relieve some of the weight bearing burden of the rest of the spine. Quite often they are irritated due to an injury, arthritis, or misalignment. This irritation produces referred pain into the gluteal region and back of the thigh. 50 January 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Piriformis contracture occurs when the piriformis muscle tightens and shortens for a prolonged period of time compressing peripheral nerves that provide sensation from the gluteal region and thigh. The tightening can occur due to repetitive use such as is seen in runners and tennis players, injury, and misalignment of the pelvis. The pain pattern is typically represented as severe buttock pain and mild thigh pain.

How Is It Diagnosed? A comprehensive neurological and orthopedic examination should be performed checking reflexes, strength, sensation, posture, gait, muscle tone, and evaluating pain production from different positions. X-rays help to narrow down the diagnosis. Further imaging studies such as MRI and CT should only be necessary after a lack of improvement from conservative treatment or a progression of symptoms.

Cutting Edge, Conservative Treatments The treatment of sciatica is aimed at removing the cause and restoring proper function to the area. Cutting edge maneuvers such as eccentric fast stretching and cross cord inhibition focus on reducing tension in tightened and shortened muscle and joint capsules. Chiropractic manipulations focus on removing the irritation and restoring proper motion in the facet joints. Flexion-distraction therapy helps to reposition some of the herniated material and increase the overall health of the disc. Neurophysiologic rehabilitation of the part of the brain that directly controls the tone of the deep spinal muscles helps to

It’s the New Year! A new year usually translates into new goals, whether it might be to lose weight, save more money, travel the world, or the like. Another great goal would be to improve your overall health, and one of the best ways to do that is to pay attention to your dental health. Problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body so make these positive changes to ensure a happy mouth and healthy body. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Eating well is not only important for your overall health, but also for your dental health and your teeth. Poor nutrition can affect your entire immune system and can increase susceptibility to many common oral disorders including gum disease. Antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts improve your body’s ability to fight bacteria and inflammation, which helps to protect your teeth and gums. Additionally, crisp fruits and raw vegetables like apples, carrots and celery help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath. Put down the cigarettes and tobacco products. In addition to the harmful side effects that we all know about smoking (throat, lung and oral cancer, anyone?), using tobacco can also harm your mouth in a myriad of ways and increases your risk for tooth discoloration, cavities, gum recession and gum disease. Did you know that smokers are about twice as likely to lose their teeth as non-smokers? Smokeless tobacco is also harmful to your health, too, so just be safe and avoid all tobacco products. The good news is that the risk of tooth loss decreases after you quit smoking or using smokeless tobacco. Limit your cocktails. Heavy or regular alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cancers of the oral cavity, throat, voice box, in addition to other parts of your body. Plaque is a sticky, colorless, invisible film of harmful bacteria that builds up on your teeth every day. Both brushing and flossing are equally important for good oral health and according to the Academy of General Dentistry, only flossing can remove plaque from between teeth and below the gumline where decay and gum disease often begin. Juicy Joints: Thai Massage for Pain…and Everything Else

Lying on a mat on the floor, fully clothed, the process of complete invigoration begins. As if dancing with a silk rope, the therapist moves your body, indirectly enforcing magical release.

A Thai massage is an ancient and highly unique treatment within the healing arts world. It is revered in a spiritual sense as it creates the space for self-realization, higher consciousness…emotional and spiritual calm. As if these benefits are not enough, the physical relief and balance created during a Thai massage is perfect reason to indulge. Thai massage utilizes movements of stretching and compressing to relieve the muscles and lubricate the joints, and yields incredible relaxation or increased energy depending on what your body needs. “Many people don’t realize the benefit of someone else stretching for you,” says Miquelle Hardy, Thai massage therapist trained by Mukti at the Vedic Conservatory. Joint pain and inflammation manifest in many ways, not only sharp pain or aching throbs. Tingling in your hip, for example, may be a sign of inflammation in the joint. Even ticklish feet can be sensitivity in the nerves from tight feet muscles that affect the joints. However it is making you aware, inflammation in any joint is most likely associated with overuse, and possibly with incorrect posture, former injuries, or even imbalanced stretching. Many dancers, for instance, have very loose joints: often overused, over-stretched, and over-lengthened to the point of inflammation. When you move any joint, there is a respective sack of fluid that releases to lubricate it, making the movement comfortable. Yet, when you move, workout, or stretch yourself, you are ultimately using up that fluid. Overuse, therefore, means there is often a lack of fluid. “Thai massage uses passive stretching, which creates an abundance of fluid in the joints,” says Miquelle. During the massage, you may experience unintentional, passive joint release. A pop or a crack is a welcome release of gas, as the vocal 56 January 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

joint lubricates itself. The area in need decompresses and releases, giving incredible relief to any pain. Thai massage creates a tourniquet effect at the joint, stopping blood flow for a very small amount of time and then stimulating fresh blood flow to the area. Imagine a river with a strong current rushing through the joint, bringing in nutrients, oxygen, and forcing out inflammation. Over stretchers can benefit from Thai massage in a way that is counterintuitive, but incredibly effective. Stretching, doing yoga - it is all amazing - but often we are stretching from the joint. Thai massage stretches from the belly of the muscle to the attachment of that muscle, which means that it will be an incredible complement to your current physical routine. Even a torn MCL, ACL, or rotator cuff, injuries that feel like stretching and movement is not what the body needs still warrant a Thai massage. Any injury means the body is off balance: stretching what could be considered the opposite of the injury brings balance and, therefore, relief from the pain. For example, many people endure some kind of back pain. Many people

hold stress in the back of their necks. The pain, however, is caused by the imbalance of our actions: we so often perform everything forward (sitting at a computer, doing the dishes, texting, etc.) By stretching and paying attention to the front, Thai massage is able to relieve that tension. Your body will feel like it can move again, like you went to yoga but didn’t do any work. Your joints will feel juicy and your spine will feel aligned. A calmness allows emotional stress, something that has so much affect on our physical being, to evaporate, causing a balance in the mind and body. It’s that time of year again where food and drinks are flowing abundantly and New Years resolutions are in full swing.

But before you jump back onto your health and fitness regime, consider adding a regimen that will help you attain your fitness goals faster and make you feel like a million bucks. Sound too good to be true? Well I’m here to tell you it’s not! It’s called Cellular Cleansing. It’s been drilled into our heads that we are in fact what we eat. People are finally starting to get it. We are becoming more educated about what we put in our bodies knowing that it will have a direct result on our appearance.

Unlike your skin which can show immediate signs of poor nutrition, your hair can take longer to show signs. Thin edges, alopecia, hair shedding, hair breakage, weak and brittle hair, hair thinning, and slow hair growth are all signs of a lack of proper hair follicle nutrition. The hair follicle from which each strand is born is the opening of the skin, commonly called the pore, which contains the hair shaft and root. At the root of the hair follicle is the dermal papilla. The

dermal papilla is fed by the bloodstream which carries nourishment to produce new hair. Your next meal can be at starting point for healthier looking hair. It takes more than just a great shampoo and conditioner to have that most wanted hair! Your nutrition can affect your hormonal balance as well as your stress levels which can be a huge factor in hair loss. Eating is essentially a form of self-medication. We nourish ourselves but we also alter our biochemistry and thus our state of mind or consciousness each time we eat. If you doubt this, go without eating too long, and see what happens to your mental-emotional-physical state. At least three times a day, the food choices you make can either increase or reduce your level of stress. Being mindful of your food choices and how you feel after you eat different foods is an essential key to stress reduction. Eating disorders can also result in hair loss, for both men and women, because you are either eliminating or blocking what your body needs to be healthy. If fad diets, crash diets, and/or eating disorders are active in your life, be careful because it can lead to hair loss. Here are a few foods that can jump start your healthy follicle feeding. 1. Salmon: rich in protein and vitamin D. Omega-3 fatty acids found in this cold water fish aren’t made in the body but are essential to grow hair. 2. Walnuts: the only nut with significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids also rich in biotin and vitamin E. Too little biotin can lead to hair loss. 3. Oysters: rich in zinc, a lack of which can lead to hair loss (even in your eyelash-

es). Three ounces have an incredible 493% of your daily value. I’ve also heard they work as an aphrodisiac *wink*. 4. Poultry: it’s your go to protein as well as containing zinc, iron, and vitamin B. 5. Greek yogurt: hit your dairy isle for this low-fat option which is high in protein, vitamin B5 and vitamin D. 6. Sweet potatoes: a great source of the antioxidant beta carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A. Every cell in your body relies on vitamin A to function. Vitamin A can help combat signs of dandruff. 7. Blueberries: packed with vitamin C which is crucial for circulation to the scalp and supports the tiny blood vessels that feed the follicles. Now that you’ve been given my seven favorite follicle friendly foods (try saying that five times fast!) you can start making some healthy food choices. Have the hair you want to wear for 2013. Rhonda Vacanti wants everyone to know that giving selflessly won’t harm your bottom line or your business. Instead it will open up new opportunity and help raise the level of competency in your field.

In the case of Vacanti the field is Advanced Permanent Make-Up. The industry has been good to Vacanti, who has been an advanced permanent make-up artist for the past 18 years. Her business, Changing Faces, has helped women of all ages beautify their natural assets and erase facial scars. Although her artistry is proven (she has trained with the best, won awards and is licensed in all areas) Vacanti was not content to merely rest on her laurels. “I have traveled all over the world doing training and assisting in the latest techniques in the permanent make-up industry. One day I realized it would be nice to pay it forward.”

Her epiphany came to fruition last month when she created (and hosted) the first “Techs helping Techs” seminar held for two days in Delray Beach. It was a chance for licensed makeup artists to learn from the pros and share knowledge, techniques and ask questions of experts in related fields to permanent makeup. “An event like the one we had can cost $1,500 to $2,000 and up. But my goal for “Techs Helping Techs” was to educate and uplift others in the industry and to have very seasoned artists share their knowledge.” Speakers included Dr. Salvatore DeCanio (an eye doctor) who spoke about eye diseases and visual aids. Lisa Kline of Image Skincare shared the importance of sunscreen and the latest FDA information. Patty Faircloth of Jmegg Advertising discussed social media and effective marketing techniques, and celebrated permanent makeup artist Mary Ritcherson came from Tampa to demonstrate her sought after hairstroke technique. “Techs Helping Techs was a way for me to give back to my industry and help women gain confidence and knowledge. Sometimes we just need to give effortlessly for no real reason,” said Vacanti, who also included a roundtable discussion at N2 Wine Bar in Pineapple Grove where her shop is located. Vacanti wants everyone to know that permanent makeup is for everyone and that the industry has taken on a whole new art form. “This new style of art and makeup is applied permanently on the face for eyebrows, eyeliner and lip color.

You must also have a Tattoo Artist License and a tattoo establishment license. I feel strongly that everyone should make sure their permanent makeup artist is licensed. Look for their license on the wall before you have anything done.” Vacanti knows what she is talking about. She has performed over 10,000 permanent makeup procedures, is board certified with the American Academy of Micro-pigmentation and is licensed by the Palm Beach County Health Department. She was a past recipient of the American Academy of Micropigmentation’s Presidential Award of Excellence and gets referrals from top Plastic Surgeons, Dermatologists and Ophthalmologists in Palm Beach County. She also has a celebrity clientele and was chosen to teach permanent make-up techniques

around the world. There are other things to note as well. “Be sure to look through the artist’s portfolio for consistency in the style of their work. It is paramount that you like their style of makeup and that they listen to your needs. It is also critical that your technician open a brand new needle every time you have a treatment,” said Vacanti, who knows there are some in the industry who reuse needles to save money. That she said is very dangerous and can lead to infection. Another reason that Vacanti created “Techs Helping Techs” was to help women empower each other. So far the results can be seen from as far away as Texas. Her colleague Lisa Fast will be having a “Techs Helping Techs” class in February in Houston, Texas. Another attendee went home and opened her own permanent makeup suite. “I wanted to help professionalize the industry and give people confidence to move forward. Crane’s Beach House has always been attuned to its historic roots. The hotel boasts of lush tranquil gardens, towering palms, two poolside Tiki Bars and enough Key West flair to declare it an island in and of itself.

That is why this 12-year-old boutique hotel just completed four luxury villas that stay close to their natural botanical roots. Each villa has a color theme that marries the glory of the earth with the subtle treasures of the sea and sand. There are River Rock lamps with dim (or day) lighting, handcrafted artisan tables, novelty glass wall art, plantation shutters, private balconies and an open floor plan that is both comfortable and comforting. “This dramatic conversion of four suites into four dazzling luxury villas will be the first phase of a major multi-year remodeling project that will strengthen and solidify our brand as the coolest place to stay in Delray Beach,” said Cathy Balestriere, 68 January 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

They are responsible for the slate satin headboards, three dimensional glass plate artwork, wood plank porcelain flooring, deco quartz countertops and other uncluttered elements of elegance. Their memory foam mattresses, made by Essentia, are organic in nature and comfortable in nurture. The memory Foam is made of hevea milk from rubber tree sap and is devoid of toxins found in many mattresses. Each room has a private balcony (for 2nd floor units) or garden with modern wicker furniture and state-of-the-art steel appliances. Even the glassware is

handmade in a colorful mosaic pattern. “Each villa guest will receive fresh fruit upon arrival as well as yoga mats; beach chairs, his and her bicycles and other amenities. The villas also have full kitchens, Keurig coffee machines, 60” smart TV’s with Internet hookup, and complementary Netflix subscription. The villas are amazing,” said Crane’s Beach House Sales, Marketing and Guest Service Manager Ashley Mileschkowsky. The architect for the Crane’s Beach House villas was Francisco Pérez-Azúa of Perez Design LLC and the construction by Bill Branning of BSA Corporation. “I am particularly pleased that both the architectural firm and the construction company behind the Crane’s Beach House renovation are based right here in Delray Beach,” said Balestriere. Crane’s Beach House also designed a first floor villa fully equipped in accordance with ADA specifications. This room has a wider doorway for wheelchairs, a roll in shower and drop counters for easy access.

All villas have exclusive private garden areas that include a reflexology stone path, fire pit and fountains. The landscaping (that includes real bamboo accents) was created by local landscaper, 360 Degree Landscape and Design. The Villas are colorful, subtle and modern without pretense. That is why each room has a color theme that runs throughout with coordinating antique glass drop lamps, bi-color walls and Rustic Rooster custom stained and designed wood tables. The artwork in each room also reflects an eclectic passion and outer -worldly color scheme. The art was purchased at local galleries such as Blue Gallery, Addison Gallery, Ford Fine Art, AR Gallery and Steven Greenwald Designs. The eclectic artwork on the walls of each villa was created by artists Josef Kote, Michelle Williams, Brigitte Balbinot, Lenner Gogli, Avi Ben Simhon and Gabriel Chocron. Add that to the private outdoor gardens (with ambient lighting) and you have heaven just a phone call away. Crane’s Beach House also renovated and updated three of their standard suites as well. These rooms also reflect a modern organic flair for luxury with natural elements that make them cozy and comfortable. The boutique hotel has a total of 24 guest suites and four villas all nestled within the intimate (and secluded) confines of Delray Beach. Their two poolside Tiki Bars are stocked with tropical drinks, signature sangria, wines and domestic and imported beer. They also have live music during happy hour on Thursdays, Friday’s and Saturday’s from 5pm to 9pm. Representing the three major funding organizations – the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, the City of Delray Beach and the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce – board members are charged with guiding the DBMC and setting a vision for the future. Now, in 2015, with a mix of new members and those with several years of experience, the board will be helping the DBMC continue to do what it does best – destination marketing for the greater Delray Beach area – while at the same time expanding its role as an economic development engine. “The DBMC has always played a large role in the economic development of Delray Beach,” says Board Chair and Community Redevelopment Agency Board member Cathy Balestriere. “This year we’ll be taking a stronger focus on economic development as it related to attracting more businesses.” Uniquely positioned to market all of Delray Beach, the DBMC is also refreshing its focus on collaboration with other organizations in the community – including those that foster art and culture as well as groups charged with promoting the traditional downtown and the area east of Interstate-95. “The DBMC is a great example of how collaboration between organizations works well,” said board member Scott Porten, immediate past chair of the Greater Delray Beach Cham70 January 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

ber of Commerce. “One of the priorities I see is continuing to build collaboration with all entities in town charged with economic growth.” Other board members agree. “The DBMC can be a connecting device to bring all the related agencies and community efforts together,” says Assistant City Manager Francine Ramaglia. Like other board members, Ramaglia believes the DBMC – under the leadership of Executive Director Stephanie Immelman – has done an outstanding job of marketing Delray Beach through both the events it produces and its efforts to promote the area as a travel destination. “The DBMC celebrates all that Delray Beach has to offer,” she said. “It has the ability to leverage all of the different brands that Delray has, from the ‘Village by the Sea’ to the ‘Most Fun Small Town in America.’” Board Member Annette Gray sees the DBMC as helping to brand Delray Beach as a cultural destination by leveraging the relationships it’s built through destination marketing to promote the arts. “A lot of the cultural jewels we have don’t have the resources to do national marketing but the DBMC does,” says Gray, also a member of the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency. Those same resources, Gray says, have been effective in helping the DBMC promote

Delray Beach as a great place to visit, live and do business. “We’ve always done economic development,” she said. Still, Gray believes increasing the visibility of Delray Beach as a place to do business will help those who move to the area because of all it has to offer see it as a great place to bring their businesses as well. “If we plant the seed instead of waiting for them to have that ‘ah ha’ moment, then we’ll see the result faster,” she said. New board member Vin Nolan, a former economic development director for the city who now has his own consulting firm, agrees that the DBMC has the opportunity to leverage its destination marketing efforts to strengthen the business community. “Delray Beach has one of the most unique offerings in Palm Beach County and we have our own marketing agency to promote it,” he said. “The broader message that can be conveyed is that people should not only visit and move here but that they should also bring their company here.” While they bring different perspectives to the table, all board members believe the new year will be an exciting one for the DBMC. “I believe 2015 will be a transformative year for the DBMC,” said Ramaglia. “We’ll not only answer the question of what our destination is but we’ll also determine our destiny.”

Dr. Elan Schrier doesn’t believe in drastic measures when it comes to helping patients feel better. The reason is simply that he has found the perfect chiropractic solution to problems that plague many of us.

Called NUCCA, it requires no twisting, popping or cracking, but offers relief from ailments that range from migraine headaches to depression and carpal tunnel syndrome. “With the NUCCA technique everything is done in neutral on your side and a gentle pressure is applied to the spine. This takes pressure off the spine and the nervous system and helps correct and balance the body,” said Dr. Schrier, who overcame migraine headaches years ago from chiropractic care. After two treatments my migraines went away. I can now do my daily activities and sleep eight hours straight.” Dr. Schrier does an in-depth analysis using digital x-rays, a thermal infrared nerve scan, posture analysis and leg length check. longer it will last,” he said. “Three highly specific x-rays are taken to determine how the spine is misaligned. The pictures give a three dimensional view of the spinal misalignment. After the adjustment, two post x-rays are taken to verify that the misalignment was reduced and went in the right direction.” The good news is that Dr. Schrier is the only NUCCA chiropractor in the Delray area. The other good news is that this type of care requires less frequent visits. “People think that chiropractic care has to go on forever. NUCCA lasts longer so you don’t have to come as often and the body ends up healing on its own.” One patient of Dr. Schrier’s was extremely depressed and went to him for help. The Mustang took the world by storm and The Beatles were riding the wave of Beatlemania.

In Delray Beach, it was also the year that a group of artists formed the Delray Art League, a non-profit that celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015. At about 200 members strong, the Delray Art League (DAL) has become a cultural institution in Delray Beach, a city that has always embraced the arts and culture. On weekends during the winter months, DAL members can be found exhibiting and selling their art work near Veterans Park or the Delray Center for the Performing Arts. They have become a vital part of the local landscape and patrons enjoy looking at and purchasing the art. “It’s frankly my favorite part of Delray,” says Esther Mayper of nearby Highland Beach. “I love walking downtown and visiting the artists. I especially love the local art that they create, sea scapes or paintings of historic buildings or downtown scenes. This is what makes Delray so unique.” While the art varies from watercolors and oils to photography and other disciplines, the quality has always been high and many of the artists find inspiration in Delray Beach capturing scenes of nature and street life. DAL has also always had a charitable aspect, with members raising funds for scholarships so that new generations of artists can have a chance to learn about their craft. The Delray Art League is gearing up for its golden anniversary with a series of events to mark its history and to point a way to the future. One of the major focuses of the 50th anniversary year is Delray’s first ever Plein Art Festival, set for February 27. The 50th anniversary will be a four-day event, says DAL President Kathi Stamm, and will include a three day outdoor festival, the 86 January 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Plein Art Competition and a banquet in the Old School Square Gymnasium with some keynote speakers discussing the importance of the arts and the role the Art League has played through the years. But while the past is something to celebrate, DAL is extremely excited about the future, especially the roll- out of its new Plein Air Art Show and Competition. For those who don’t know Plein Air is a French expression which means “in the open air” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called “peinture sur le motif” (“painting on the ground”) in French. The Plein Air Art movement has taken the art world by storm and the Delray Art League will introduce the trend to Delray with its new competition. Manny Jomok, a DAL member, says artists from all over will descend on Delray to paint what they see, namely, a gorgeous town. “Delray is a perfect spot for Plein Air,” says Jomok, a talented artist who splits his time between Delray and Maine. “We are a wonderful city to paint and Plein Air gives artists an opportunity to capture Delray. This is something that if we get behind can really be of tremendous value to Delray. We are a per-

fect community for Plein Air to thrive.” The festival also should be exciting for art fans and visitors who get to see the artistic experience up close and personal by watching artists paint outside. Prizes will be offered and the competition is being marketed in arts publications nationwide. Over time, Jomok thinks Plein Air Art can become a major driver of culture and tourism in Delray attracting artists and fans from near and far. The Delray Center for the Performing Arts is partnering with the Delray Art League on the event and the milestone anniversary. Delray Beach can trace a lot of its success to the cultivation of arts and culture. The Delray Art League has been a major partner and participant in growing Delray’s brand as an artist’s haven for the past 50 years. Aside from frequent outdoor exhibitions, the organization supports youth artists, creates a market for local artists to sell their creations and hosts other exhibits, occasionally turning City Hall into a wonderful art gallery. DAL’s leaders are bullish on the future, with a new wave of artists breathing new life into the organization and plans for more exhibitions, competitions and special events.

Growth and Development Delray is hot. Red hot. And developers are anxious to build projects in the city’s downtown core to take advantage of demand and Delray’s strong brand as a solid market. The city is wrestling with new land development regulations that seek to shape growth. Highlights include new rules regarding density, incentives for office

space and restrictions on height. Currently, the city’s height limit is 60 feet, but that will be lowered to 54 feet and four stories under the new rules. Proponents argue that Delray is a four story town. Opponents worry that the new rules, which also require open space, will hinder smart growth and that Delray has become an onerous place to invest with a difficult approval process. Regardless of which side of the growth divide you’re on, the issue is sure to remain a hot one in the New Year.

New City Manager The New Year will bring a new City Manager to Delray Beach. Don Cooper, long time manager of Port St. Lucie, will take the helm in the New Year. Cooper has a strong background in finance and economic development. He was chosen from among nearly 100 applicants, including interim City Manager Terry Stewart, who was praised for his service but did not land the position.

Veteran department head Lula Butler is retiring in January, leaving a key vacancy in a portfolio that has included education, race relations, building, code enforcement, neighborhood associations and strategic planning. Diane Colonna, the longtime CRA director, also leaves in January, leaving a vacancy in that key city agency. Cooper is an experienced manager and will be tasked with hitting the ground running. Tourism & Fun Delray Beach has earned a reputation for its restaurants, recreational opportunities, art, culture and festivals. There’s a desire—from local entrepreneurs—to build on that reputation by adding business to the mix. The challenge: many entrepreneurs want to locate downtown but there is a dearth of available office space in the central core. Look for efforts to incentivize office development in 2015.

Education Education has been a major focus of city leaders since the 80s. In 2015, look for the city and the Chamber of Commerce to collaborate on plans to promote reading at the elementary school level, summer learning and career readiness. In addition, there is a strong desire to help improve Carver Middle School and create programs that would encourage students to consider coming back to Delray after college or trade school to grow the local economy. A new collaboration with Florida Atlantic University is in the works. While the partnership is in the early stages, possibilities include scholarships and exposing middle schoolers to the collegiate experience. City officials are excited to be working with new area Superintendent Ian Salzman, a former Carver principal and district rising star who has a major passion for Delray schools.

Steven Michaels is a man of many talents. His financial history reads like a page out of the film “Wall Street,” yet this down to earth Chicago native seems relatively unscathed by his tremendous success.

His background and bio read like the financial statement for a stock portfolio. He began trading at the Chicago Board of Trade in the fixed income markets specializing in yield curve trading and analysis in 1985. He also developed computerized risk management models for equities and options traders. Michael received degrees in public accounting and computer science and began his career programming software for arbitrage traders. Never one to sit on the sidelines (when there is action) Michael decided to lease a seat on the trading floor of the Chicago Board of Trade. “I loved the markets; it was challenging and exciting trading in the Treasury Bond pit with 750 traders.” By the ripe old age of 22 Michael had purchased a seat on the exchange and was one of the youngest members of the Chicago Board of Trade and the Mid-American Exchange. A few years later he became a member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. “This was a great time for me. I learned about trading discipline, management and when to take losses.” He must not have taken too many losses because he parlayed his knowledge into something even bigger. That something turned out to be a yield curve proprietary arbitrage and execution company called S&G. While there he led the bond basis trading and risk management team. At the same time he worked with his brothers Mark and Jay buying and developing real estate in Chicago. After Michael sold S&G he went to work for a London Investment Bank, Gerrard National, Inc. running their foreign exchange trading department. “I loved London it was a fantastic place to live. I traveled all over the world and met the most

interesting people (royalty included).” While at GNI, Michael helped make it one of the most profitable foreign exchange trading desks in the UK. But all good things sometimes come to an end. However in Michael’s case it led to something bigger and better. He started his own Hedge Fund (called The Macro Fund) with the head macro analyst from Soros Quantum Fund. Although his heady career – and swift market models – might make a lesser gentleman weary, Michael continued to be active in Florida (and Chicago) real estate. He bought rental property in Delray Beach and two shopping centers, one in Miramar and another in Hollywood. But it just wasn’t real estate that intrigued him. “I had never heard of Delray Beach before buying the Lavers Rental property on Linton Blvd. I fell in love with it here and relocated my Hedge Fund to Boca Raton and my life to Delray. I really enjoy the downtown, the arts, the live music and the lifestyle.” He also found something else in Florida – a former New York friend from the financial world Andrew Greenbaum. The two of them teamed up together to form Hudson Holding LLC and began purchasing property. They bought The Gulfstream Hotel in Lake Worth, Linton Towers Office Suites and recently acquired The Sundy House (and surrounding property). Although they acquire historic and distinctive buildings their goal is to glorify them with a more modern purpose. “We are remodeling The Gulfstream Hotel with plans to build convention space with retail and office space, and a rooftop restaurant and nightclub in Lake Worth,” said Michael, whose desk is a treadmill with four large video monitors atop the handles.

The South Swinton Ave property is part of what Michael calls the next generation of retail. “I look at Delray Beach as being on the verge of a great retail renaissance. The majority of this renaissance will develop west of Swinton along Atlantic. We will have premiere boutiques, restaurants, entertainment and a hotel.”

With all this talk of grandeur there is always a bit of skepticism from Delray locals. But they needn’t worry, Michael wants to flow with the tide and swim alongside citizens to make sure the property honors the history and lifestyle of Delray. “We are working with the city and residents to make sure our projects enhance Delray,

and the lives of its residents.” Real Estate Developer Bill Morris knows that Michael is true to his word. “Steven is one of my favorite people in the development industry. He is personable, good at bringing people together and has the best interest of Delray Beach at heart. He has tons of ideas - is a great thinker, developer and cares about Delray. We are lucky to have him.” Hudson Holdings has bought, built or converted over 4000 residential units and millions of square feet of commercial space. Though Michael’s head is a veritable financial landfill of facts and data he has been known to be a visionary. At Hudson Holding he focuses on construction, property management and property operations. Michael’s formative years helped prepare him for this leap. “My father, who was my mentor, was always starting new businesses. When he was in real estate I watched him deal with tenants and negotiate leases. He taught me to rely on myself and always to be honest yet firm.” Michael must have been paying attention. “Steven has the vision of an artist and a talent for re-developing an area. He paints a picture of how all the synergistic elements come together and creates buildings and landscapes that retain the character and culture of the community,” said Albert Boyd of Hudson Holdings. At the age of 50, Michael shows no signs of slowing down. He and partner Greenbaum are aggressively seeking out new real estate properties (all over the country) and are notorious for working 24/7 365 days of the year. When not pouring over renderings - or making real estate deals - the gregarious and charming six-foot blue eyed brainiac spends time with his six-year-old twins or watches boxing on TV. Though he boxed (and played football and baseball) in high school it’s now a spectator sport for him. One can clearly see that life for Michael is anything but a spectator sport. He is on the board of the Arts Garage, a Mount Sinai Founder and has the financial acumen of a think tank. Michael is both humble and engaging and has a zest for life that glides in tandem with his business brilliance. TAVERNA OPA OF DELRAY BEACH Food From Heaven

If the name Taverna Opa sounds familiar there’s a good reason. Owner Peter Tsialamanis has been in the restaurant business for over four decades and has racked up the accolades for his Greek restaurants in Hollywood, Miami, Orlando and Boca Raton.

His theory that “Life is a Celebration” is the motivating force behind his newest restaurant on Atlantic Avenue. Their authentic Greek cuisine and zest for expression has made this restaurant a favorite for locals and out-of-towners. The food is decidedly Greek in nature but homemade in nurture. You notice that immediately when you are served their complimentary homemade hummus with freshly baked pita bread. The reason for the wonderful flavor and texture of their food is because of their unique preparation and special oven. The other thing that distinguishes this restaurant from others is that the food is exceedingly fresh. You won’t find Bronzino (sea bass) any fresher unless you took a fish hook and trolled the waterway. The Bronzino is prepared with a subtle yet divine marinade

of lemon, garlic butter, fresh lemon, orange juice and olive oil. Served whole (with greens and rice) it is mild, moist and delicious. Rarely do you get such fresh fish prepared to perfection like this. As part of their small dish menu we highly recommend the char grilled Octopus served on a bed of cabbage with olive oil, red wine vinegar and oregano. Another amazing dish, and one you should absolutely try, is their Opa Shrimp. These large shrimp are serenaded in a roasted tomato sauce with garlic, fresh basil, olive oil, white wine and goat cheese. This dish is not spicy (to our liking) and has an excellent flavor that doesn’t overpower the shrimp but enhances it. If you ask Carolyn Fitze what she loved most about dining at Taverna Opa she will rave on about their pan seared Scallops in a vegetable broth. This dish has a splash of white wine and is served with spinach, feta cheese and orzo. In what seemed like minutes her dish was devoured with gusto – but Fitze was smitten with her prey. “I love this restaurant. The food was so good and everything had a wonderful flavor and freshness that I usually don’t see in many restaurants.” Fitze is right. Taverna Opa takes pride in their food that is purchased from all corners of the world. A popular dish is their lamb, which is brought in from Australia. The signature lamb chops are cooked in a wood fire grill and marinated in thyme, rosemary, olive oil and garlic. The lamb chops (and roasted lamb dish) are served with fresh lemon potatoes and vegetables that taste like they were picked from the farm. Not one to indulge in vegetables at restaurants (because they are often soggy or frozen) these were in a category of their own. Huge chunks of fresh zucchini, squash, eggplant, tomato, bell peppers and string beans in fresh olive oil gave them the right consistency and a wonderful flavor. The lamb

dishes are marinated the day before, which explains the wonderful natural flavor. There are many other Greek delicacies at Taverna Opa such as Saganaki, which is cheese served flaming at your table in brandy. It’s part light show and part dairy fest. There is also a family style menu for parties of four or more. You can choose from different selections that include salad, cold Pikilia, Saganaki and a meat platter or a larger meal that includes a meat platter, seafood platter and appetizers and salads. One of their newest dishes is Fish Plaki, which is Tilapia cooked in a baking dish with tomato, onion, peppers, white wine, olive oil, garlic and basil. It is food such as this that our grandparents took pride in preparing and we took pleasure in eating. They also have a large selection of Greek wines such as Moschofilero, which we found light and delightful. Rumor has it the grapes are grown on a volcanic rock. As someone who shuns white wine (unless it is French) I found this to be smooth and flavorful without being too sweet or acidic. Taverna Opa is also famous for their Happy Hour every day from 3pm to 7pm in the restaurant (and Friday and Saturday at the bar).

They have half price drinks and a specially priced menu. They also have a “Mykonos Brunch” Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3 pm that includes a Greek Omelet, Sfougato Omelet, Eggs Benedict, Steak and Eggs, Belgium waffles and more. There’s also a full bar. If you ask Peter what makes his restaurants so special he’ll tell you: “When you come here you experience a different approach that energizes and gives diners a new dimension of entertainment. Dinner norms are broken and spirits are lifted. The marriage of tradition with modern is what Taverna Opa touts as the most rapidly expanding concept.” To make this Greek experience a reality there is live music and a belly dancer. The food is excellent, the festive spirit is intact and there’s an outdoor seating area with the greatest people watching show on earth. It’s so much fun at Taverna Opa you might just think you are in Greece. “Bad To The Bone”… but why?

here seems to be a lot of pets with behavioral problems that need a little help. Some of the problems are very obvious and others we don’t notice or acknowledge. Excessive barking, stool eating, aggression, shyness, destructiveness and many other challenges are faced by pet parents every day. That’s the bad news. However, there is a very positive outlook in that almost all of these behavioral problems are rooted organically. In most cases it can be traced to a physiological challenge, be it nutritional, chemical or other causes. Everything that goes into our pets’ body has a profound effect on their behavior. In a natural environment where animals are eating species appropriate diets and are free from most man-made pollutants, most animals within any group will all show very similar behaviors. Yes you will get gender variations and those of dominance within the group, but a wolf will still behave like a wolf. In our domesticated pets, they are exposed to all kinds of unnatural influences that can have profound influences on their behavior. At home, they are exposed to the chemical pollutants in the form of our cleaners, lawn products, drugs and medications

along with the unnatural foods that pet owners provide. All of these factors alter their biochemistry and physiology. To illustrate how this happens, let’s look at a life cycle of a dog or a cat in the family. When you acquire your pet, we rush out to get food for them but do we really know about nutrition? We listen to advertising, talk to friends and even our veterinarian and their staff but are they educated in food or nutrition? If it’s not what they would eat in nature, the body starts to change. Dry foods filled with carbohydrates are turned into sugars, a real cause of hyperactivity, inflammation, diabetes, and other challenges that affect behavior. Now you go for your “wellness check up” and your veterinarian gives your pet vaccines and drugs for everything from heartworms to rabies. All have known risk factors which include mineral imbalances, allergies, hormonal disruption and even death. Along with that, spaying and neutering is added into the mix. How far are we from that natural wolf or jungle cat? A diet of dry food does not provide the metabolic energy our pet needs to thrive. It lacks components such as essential fatty acids to keep the skin and joints healthy. When

your joints ache, you cannot function in a normal way. The same is true of our pets. They become lethargic, sore, grumpy and inflamed which can turn into anxiety, aggression or disobedience. Then add the medications with all their known side effects and we end up with a plethora of small and major issues. As you now start to imagine, every little bit of unnatural drugs, foods and chemicals consumed over the lifetime of your pet has a profound and cumulative impact on every aspect of their behavior. Every imbalance we create adds to the growing list of behavioral problems. It is therefore imperative that we take the time to remember the true origin of our pets and to provide them with the most natural and proper species appropriate diet. Along with this, we must shield them from harmful toxins and provide them with stimulating activities that will emulate a true animal lifestyle. A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” It’s a new year. Out with the old and in with the new, right? Then how come I hear so many of my friends continually admit to recycling old love interests? R-E-A-L-I-T-Y, more often than not, comes as a swift kick in the tush. Obviously there was something off, or something that couldn’t be fixed. If it was all bliss, you would still be dating this person or even hitched by now. There must have been issues that drove you to break it off or break up. Why would you ever consider going back for more if it wasn’t right the first time? That’s rule number one…NEVER, I mean NEVER, go back to the scene of the crime. Take Karrie, for example. She dated “said guy” on and off for several years. He wasn’t able to commit, so the relationship terminated, basically her doing. Although they still kept in touch, the “better as friends” suddenly became “friends with benefits.” As an outsider with a better handle on clarity, I can pretty much assure Karrie that her “FWB” is never going to commit to her. Being his booty call, bringing him dessert at midnight because he asked and yes (both you and the actual kind you eat), is never going to get you forever and the white picket fence. If you ask me, this guy is a total genius. High Fiver, my friend! He gets major return on little to no investment. These types of situations only leave someone (usually the woman) wishing and hoping, then shattered into a million pieces when the flame finally burns to total blackness. Suddenly you come to the harsh reality that you are basically being used for physical need rather than emotional want. The truth hurts and kind of sucks! shares with me that her latest companion of sorts is also “recycled.” Her justification is that this time around, he is really being an unbelievably “nice guy” and his presence in her world, is just an act of passing the time. Kudos to Leslie for truly just living in the moment, accepting that the reasons they didn’t work out the first time might be the catalyst for another relationship fatality but nonetheless, she continues to have fun in the interim. “No one is getting hurt,” she says. Just remember; It’s all fun and games, till someone loses an eye! Most of us make New Year’s resolutions. Few of us keep to them. I try to live a “green” life, constituting eco-friendly values each and every day, in an effort to save our depleting planet. Honestly, yet proudly, I don’t practice the same ethics when it comes to my dating life. Many times in a moment of weakness, I have thought about past relationships (those

that ended on fairly amicable terms), and contemplated testing the waters to see if there might have been a spark to reignite. Then I take a breath and come to my senses. I got out of each and every one of these relationships because for some reason or another, they weren’t the right one for me. No matter how you flip it, dress it up or label it, things begin and end for a reason. If the situation was really right, we would still be together. Recycling in this case = bad, very bad. No need to reuse or reclaim. I am, however, clearly “reducing” the potential for love life drama. Points for me! It’s no secret that people find comfort in familiarity. Recycling past loves lost is the easy way of avoiding loneliness. It’s just an environmentally friendly way of band aiding a bigger problem- that being just plain laziness. It’s January, the start of a fresh new, year full of new beginnings and hopeful happy endings. What better time is it, to really put oneself out there? Think of all the wonderful possibilities in front of you and all the potentially fabulous, brand new people you can meet this year. Stick to separating paper and plastic in those colorful city provided trash bins for recycling. Time is something we can’t recycle. Get out there and make it happen. This is your year…. A New Year can be a fresh start. We have five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes in 2015, that’s 525,600 minutes to savor, appreciate, squander or waste. It’s up to us.

In the year just concluded, I found myself fixated on the word gratitude. As I turned 50 and looked both back and ahead, I found myself feeling overwhelmed with gratitude for the gifts in my life. Family, friends, health and love topped the list. But just behind those important aspects of life is country and community. For me, anyway. I am an avid consumer of the news and lately the news has been grim. Islamic State, Ebola, starvation in Syria, war, violence, crushing poverty and denials of basic freedoms seem to dominate the news cycle these days. And while America is not perfect and we have serious and pressing issues at home, we still live in an exceptional place. And that brings me to Delray Beach. The magazine you hold in your hands is a monthly Valentine to this dynamic and exciting place that we proudly call our home. Each month, thanks to you and our loyal advertisers, we get to spotlight exceptional people, businesses, ideas, events and culture. We have it all, right here. And for that I am…you guessed it…grateful. Delray Beach is a success story. That does not mean it’s perfect or that we don’t suffer from problems, because we do. Drugs, crime, violence, poverty, racism, hatred, discrimination and every other form of dysfunction can be found here. We are not a perfect place. But unlike other communities we have found a way over the years to acknowledge

our problems and work collaboratively to solve them or at least make a serious dent in making things better. We still have a long way to go and truthfully we will never be completely done, but… We have so much to celebrate and so much more to do. As we begin a New Year, I think it’s important to be grateful for what we have and to think about what still could be. Collectively, the visionaries in this town created an enormous amount of value; there’s the obvious --as we marvel at record prices for properties-- and there’s the intangible quality of life that has been created when you can attend a free concert at the Pavilion or catch a Grammy winner at the Arts Garage. Or maybe, you prefer a quite walk along Lake Ida or the beach. But there’s more to do as well—if you

don’t think we have hunger, visit The Caring Kitchen, if you don’t think we have pain, spend some time at the Drug Abuse Foundation. We have thousands of children who would like to return home to Delray and an obligation to provide them with opportunities to do so. That means jobs, affordable housing as well as cultural and recreational offerings that appeal to ages other than our own. We have 525,600 minutes in 2015 and the next one—year or minute- is never guaranteed. Let’s make this one count. And be grateful when we do.
