Expert Tactical Trainer Taught Ladies F.I.R.S.T. Self Defense Class At Spodak Dental Group
Spodak Dental Group hosted a Ladies F.I.R.S.T. Self Defense class on Wednesday, June 18. More than 20 ladies of all levels of athleticism, strength, flexibility and body types learned how to use physics, gravity, leverage and technique to deter an attacker. Kendrink Stephens, an expert in personal defense tactics and close quarter combat, is the founder and teacher of the Ladies F.I.R.S.T. Self Defense class. According to Mr. Stephens, many women’s self-defense programs teach unrealistic techniques that promote a false sense of security and cause more harm than good. This program is the first of its kind and employs effective, “reality based” tactics that will help the attendees protect themselves under the worst of circumstances. One out of every five American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. Furthermore, 80 percent of victims are younger than 30 years old. “The statistics are staggering,” said Dr. Craig Spodak, owner of Spodak Dental Group, “and I’m glad to be able to provide this free class to the women in our community. If I can help save someone’s life, it is well worth it.” The Ladies F.I.R.S.T. Self Defense Training Program is being taught nationwide to individual women, groups, corporations, female school teachers, moms’ clubs, women’s sports teams, shelters for victims of assault and more. 8 August 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Law enforcement has always played a critical role in the work that AVDA performs in providing services to victims of domestic abuse. Since the organization formed in 1986, AVDA has worked diligently to forge close working relationships with police departments across the county.
The Delray Beach Police Department is no exception. On June 24th, The Board of Directors of AVDA, Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, recognized Jeffrey S. Goldman, incoming Delray Beach Police Chief, for his leadership in the community. With corporate office in Delray Beach, AVDA has provided the Delray Beach police department with training about domestic violence, as well as information on how to access local services. In turn, the police department has provided training on safety awareness for the AVDA staff, to enable staff members to deal with dangerous situations appropriately.
Delray Beach CRA Announces 3rd Quarter Grant And Incentive Workshop Dates
The Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency continues to host workshops to educate potential applicants about a number of grant opportunities available to local businesses, developers and commercial property owners in the Delray Beach CRA District. Interested participants may include realtors, contractors, commercial property owners, architects, and businesses considering relocating to Delray Beach within the CRA District, and those with existing businesses in the area. t’s summer! I’ll drink to that. Usually summertime is when Delray becomes a little less busy and locals can show their favorite bartenders some love. here are great cities up and down the coast of Florida but for me, what makes Delray Beach stand out is its strong sense of community. I’ve been lucky to be a part of this community for the past 20 years and if it weren’t for Delray Beach and the outstanding people I’ve met here, I probably wouldn’t still be in Florida. I first came here in 1990 as manager of the Colony Wine & Liquor Shoppe. I had been working in the wine business most of my life so the Colony was the perfect fit. We were one of the first stores on Atlantic Avenue to stay open after 5 p.m. and we became known as the place to find a great selection of wines in Delray Beach. After leaving the shop, I went into the wine wholesale business. You could say I spent 10 years on the Avenue and 10 years walking the Avenue, all in the great name of wine. Just a few months ago I joined the staff of Caffe Luna Rosa, working three nights a week. I’ve always loved coming here as a guest but working here you get to see just how well everyone works together. It’s like synchronized swimming for a restaurant. As the host, I’m seeing many of my old friends and I feel very lucky to be a part of a restaurant like Caffe Luna Rosa.

Pain Can Change Your Brain

Chronic pain is very common throughout the world. Studies show that more than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain syndromes and dysautonomias. But how does chronic pain occur and what are the long term effect to our brains? The human brain changes automatically, instantly, constantly and daily based on the information it receives from our body and the environment around it. The term used in the medical community is “Neuroplasticity” and these changes can be positive or negative.
Chronic pain is described as pain that lingers for more than three months. It may be caused by an ongoing mechanism such as arthritis, sustained nerve root compression due to spinal stenosis, nerve root injury or other ongoing painful stimuli. In some cases, the exact cause of the pain is hard to identify and can be associated with changes that have taken place within the central nervous system itself. The process in which these changes take place is called maladaptive plasticity. Most people don’t realize but our brains are changing every day and we continuously train our brains each time we learn a new skill, read a new book or sing a new song. This process occurs by electrical and chemical signals in our cells throughout our body that creates pathways to our 42 August 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
brain. Prolonged stimulus to a specific neural pathway can change or alter the amount of information both electrical and chemical that travels to the brain. In fact, chronic back pain actually shrinks the gray matter in our brains, the part responsible for memory and information processing. So the longer an individual has chronic back pain, the more brain loss they suffered. Understanding acute and chronic pain is important. All pain is perceived in the brain, it is the long term effects that make them completely different. Acute pain is our brain telling us that there is some type of damage to our body, often times very severe and short lived. This signal is sent to the brain and is perceived as a recognizable sensation of trouble. The brain sends instructions to the body to remove itself from danger and the brain works to lessen the pain. Often times the pain will stop even before the tissue is fully healed. Chronic pain is quite different. When the brain receives ongoing stimulus of danger and/or damage, the pain sensory pathways become reinforced (heightened) instead of inhibited causing the brain’s pain centers to become enhanced and at times can cause cortical remapping in the sensory part of our brains because more and more cells are being recruited to sense pain. In this case Neuroplasticity works against us! As stated earlier, the human brain is highly
changeable and for the brain to work at its optimal function it has 3 major requirements, oxygen, proper nutrients and stimulation. Utilizing advanced neurological rehabilitative exercises such as interactive metronome (motor timing exercises), one-sided chiropractic adjustments, cognitive exercises and specific brain activation (sound, light, touch, vibration and oculomotor exercises) can help in “remapping” the brain’s pain centers and target under functioning or over functioning regions of the brain. As summer comes to a close, the holiday seasons takes hold. Here are some of my favorite hair looks to keep you on the brink of hair fashion.
For the guys, keep it classy. The classic 1960‘s look is still in. Cropped back and sides with length on top worn parted slick with a light gel or down with side swept fringe. Shaggy looks still work in some cases but the nape or back need to be cropped shorter. This will give your shag a modern feel. For color a little baliage (painted on highlights) will work for both of these styles. For the ladies, we are still loving braids and ponytails. tion. If you’re really good with your hands add a few braids to that parted pony. Braids are here to stay and I could not be happier with such a versatile style. Rock this look in a multitude of styles from French to fishtail to braided up-dos. With fashion taking a classic, vintage turn I predict we will start seeing the bob on the rise. The bob is a classic look that can be seen as fashion forward. It’s also a look that conveys ones confidence in style. Side parted bob? Why not?! Side parts for everyone!
As for color trends I’m feeling that women will go darker with their color. Growing out their ombre’s, meaning, you already have 5-7 inches of dark roots. Start glossing darker locks (adding mass amounts of shine and masking the grey). Platinum blondes will now take on finer highlights and adding fine dark lowlights making them Bronde (perfect mix of blonde and brown). All these styles will make your hair sought after, but nothing is more sought after than healthy hair and scalp. Treatments and good quality shampoos and conditioners are essential to protecting your investment on your hair. Ask your stylist about in salon treatments that will leave your hair more manageable and lustrous. The last bit of advice I’ll leave you with is get yourself a Wet brush. They are brushes specifically designed for combing out wet hair, especially hair that is long and tangled. They work like magic and won’t break your hair. It’s that time of year again… back to books and homework, sports and clubs, new teachers and classmates, and for some prom and graduation. After a long sizzling summer filled with beach time and family vacations, the first day Back to School starts for students in Delray Beach and throughout Palm Beach County on August 18th. Some students will be jumping for joy to start a new year with their friends, while others might have the jitters of being in an unknown environment. Parents can help ease their children’s nerves about starting a new school year in many ways. To ease the transition from summer fun to back to school, parents can follow these helpful tips. Organize your family’s back to school schedules now. Be sure to mark your calendars now with important school dates, such as Labor Day on September 1st, and teacher work days and half days. This way you
won’t be surprised if your child gets out a few hours earlier and you won’t have to rearrange your schedule at the last minute. Make a trip to the school campus with your child and walk around to familiarize them with the campus, cafeteria, their locker room and classroom locations. Contact your child’s school for a school supply list and get to the mall. Be sure to look for sales and clearances. Also,
check your local newspaper for coupons and deals. Keep in mind of school dress codes while shopping for back to school clothes. Some area schools prohibit short skirts, tank tops and open toe shoes for girls, in addition to baggy pants and flip flops for boys. T-shirts with certain sayings or phrases may also be prohibited at your child’s school. School meals are also an important preparation for the school year. If you are packing your child’s lunch, include healthy meal. Arrange for transportation for your child to and from school or an after school activity. Find out the bus times and routes, know the bike and walking paths or chart out your carpooling plans ahead of time. Be sure to get the new bus schedules and talk to your children about bus safety and not to talk to strangers while waiting at a bus stop. If your child is walking or riding their bicycle to school, make sure they have a buddy and they are not going alone. It’s also helpful to walk or bike the course to school before the first day to familiarize your child with the route. After care or after school activities are also an important part of the planning process. Make sure to know the dates and times for after school sporting practices, games or after school club meetings so you can arrange pick-up or carpooling. Florida and railroads have a rich history. By LINDA BROWN

Florida’s east coast was developed in large part because Henry Flagler built a private railroad that connected Jacksonville to Miami, allowing real estate at every stop to thrive.
Now, more a century later, Florida East Coast Industries, a company descended from Flagler’s empire is attempting to build a passenger railroad that would connect Miami to Orlando, with stops in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Proponents of All Aboard Florida argue that passenger rail will relieve congested highways by enabling people to ditch their cars and hop aboard a train that will get them from downtown Miami to Orlando in about 3 hours. The train is also seen as a boon to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm enabling what is known as transit-oriented development (TOD) to take root in those communities. TOD calls for a mix of uses around a transportation hub such as shops, offices, residential and dining—all

done without the need of a car. Back in 2001-02, when Delray was developing the landmark Citizen’s Downtown Master Plan, residents and leaders called for a passenger rail station in downtown Delray. Two sites, one near Sun Trust and one near Ocean City Lumber along the tracks were chosen as possible locations. But now that passenger rail may finally become reality as a result of All Aboard Florida, local residents and others across the state are crying foul. First, the train will not stop in Delray Beach, but will speed through the downtown on the way to West Palm. For local activist Alan Schlossberg that means noise and delays as local motorists and pedestrians have to wait for the train to speed by Atlantic Avenue and other crossings. “Basically, we are trying to get the word out and derail this very unnecessary project that plans to have a total of 46 trains running along the east rail road tracks 24/7 at a projected cost to taxpayers of $1.5 billion dollars which will probably continue to increase,” says Schlossberg who is assisting Florida Not All Aboard, an organization that is trying to raise awareness of the project and get cities like Delray to take action in opposition to the plan. According to Florida Not All Aboard, there will be 32 high speed passenger trains running daily through Delray from Miami to Cocoa, plus an additional 13 or 14 freight trains. FECI is still trying to finance about 40 miles of track to complete the hub to Orlando. Schlossberg notes that passenger rail already exists between Orlando and Miami via Amtrak.
Florida Not All Aboard founder K.C. Traylor was recently in Delray Beach asking the City Commission to formally oppose the project. At press time, it was unclear what if any action the commission will take. In addition to railroad crossing delays, opponents worry about noise pollution with loud train horns required to warn motorists and pedestrians when the trains pass through. Prior to FECI’s proposal, local mayors up and down the coast had hoped for passenger rail service to their cities. Former Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle convened mayors from West Palm, Delray, Boca, Boynton and Broward cities years ago to lobby FECI, then owned by Flagler Industries. Passenger rail was seen as a boon to east coast downtowns as workers, shoppers and diners could leave their cars behind and have dinner at places like Atlantic Avenue. But with the trains zooming by, at least initially, those dreams will have to wait. Says Not All Aboard’s Traylor: “My goal is to unite our communities up and down the coast and to change the course of All Aboard Florida. We need to stop this project from destroying our communities as we know them today. People are simply not aware of this project. I followed a gentleman out of the commission meeting who was part of the Delray Beach Restaurant Association. He was very alarmed about this project and had not heard of it until I spoke at the meeting! This project will double track through the center of Delray Beach, add more trains and the restaurants have no idea. This is unacceptable. This project has flown under the radar for two years. Our communities need to know.”

From the Food Network and celebrity chefs to green markets and community gardens, we are a food driven culture. Delray Beach is no exception.
In fact, Delray Beach’s downtown renaissance was led by food and beverage with codes that relaxed parking rules, allowed for sidewalk cafés, created a valet system and encouraged restaurants to take a chance on Atlantic Avenue and later Pineapple Grove. Today, more than 130 restaurants are in the downtown area, making Delray a culinary destination that draws huge crowds year round. Now, that success seems to be entering a second phase that includes a thriving CRA sponsored Green Market, several new private grocers, food related media properties and even a craft brewery—Saltwater Brewery. Here’s a capsule look at some of the food trends impacting Delray Beach:
Grocers There was a time, not too long ago, when the only Delray Beach supermarket option was Publix or Winn Dixie. Albertson’s came and went and while Western Beef was courted for West Atlantic Avenue the deal never happened. These days, Publix and Winn Dixie have competition from the likes of Walmart which opened a neighborhood grocery on South Federal Highway, Target which has expanded its grocery options, Aldi and Delray newcomers Fresh Market and this Sept 5, Trader Joe’s at Linton Boulevard and Federal Highway. Trader Joe’s has become a hugely popular brand, with dedicated fans. But until recently, the chain hasn’t had a presence in the Florida market. A majority of the products stocked at Trader Joe’s are private label brands free of artificial colors, flavors, ingredients, and preservatives. area, Trader Joe’s has expanded to more than 390 stores in 35 states. Josef Mayer is a recently relocated Angeleno who is excited to see this piece of the Golden State coming to Delray. “Trader Joe’s is just a great retailer,” says the marketing consultant. “They don’t have customers, they have fans and pretty soon you’ll see why.” Smaller markets such The Boys and Bedner’s Farms also have its share of fans and Delray’s Green Market is more popular than ever in its downtown location.
Community Gardens Delray Beach is home to a few community gardens in which people rent plots and grow their own vegetables. The Swinton Avenue Community Garden occupies a prominent spot on North Swinton. The new Frog Alley Community Garden has become a popular spot for neighbors to gather and swap advice on how best to grow plants and vegetables. Organizer Pablo Del Real encourages sustainable, organic gardening. Frog Alley is a program of Sow Share, a Delray Beach nonprofit organization devoted to continuing the work of Gandhi & Martin Luther King. The Frog Alley Garden is located at 250 SW 4th Avenue. Media While most local magazine and newspapers feature food and restaurant coverage, there are two local media properties that are devoted solely to food, restaurants, gardening and farming. Delray Beach entrepreneur Irene Revelas
recently launched Edible Palm Beach, a glossy publication devoted to food, chefs, gardens, and agriculture and craft purveyors. Edible is part of a national movement of magazines, websites, podcasts and TV shows dedicated to food topics. Locally, Joe Stout, a video producer, has developed a web property called Food Beat, which chronicles the burgeoning and ever changing Delray Beach restaurant scene. The site features video reviews and behind the kitchen stories about local restaurants.
Craft Brewing Saltwater Brewery, 1701 West Atlantic Ave., is Delray’s first foray into craft brewing. But the craft trend is prominent at many local restaurants and bars, including Park Tavern, Coffee District and Delray Beer Trade. The Delray Center for the Performing Arts holds a Beer Fest that celebrates the trend and this fall will see the debut of a new Delray festival called “Bacon and Bourbon.” So what’s next? Well, some locals are hoping food manufacturing and entrepreneurship. Jim Chard, a Delray resident, is hoping to find a location and investors for a concept called “Food Factory” which would spotlight local purveyors. The concept has worked well for cities including Winter Park, Orlando and Brooklyn, N.Y. Stay tuned.

On The Ave Celebrates “Back To Cool” on West Atlantic Avenue

Delray Beach’s popular On The Avenue will return to West Atlantic Avenue this month, celebrating the start of the new school year with outstanding local entertainment, great food and activities for all generations.
“Our theme this year is ‘Back to Cool,’” said Stephen Chrisanthus, associate director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative, which produces On The Ave. “It ties in with our ‘It’s Always Cool in Delray Beach’ summer campaign and lets people know that there will be cool things happening at On The Ave.” Set for Thursday, Aug. 21, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., On The Ave will be held at the Elizabeth Wesley Plaza, and on Southwest 5th Avenue, which will be closed to traffic from Atlantic Avenue to Southwest 1st Street. “This is going to be a fun night in Delray Beach with the same cool feel and hot entertainment visitors to all our On The Ave events are used to,” Chrisanthus said. “It’s a chance for everyone to come out and feel the cool vibe of Southwest 5th Avenue.” On The Avenue will be packed with a full schedule of musical entertainment and will also have activities for both children and adults, including games that are a bit of a throwback to the days before video games. “There’s going to be a mix of “old school” games that parents used to play, with music and dancing that are popular today,” Chrisanthus said. street chalk artwork, a photo booth and lots of crafts. To keep things really cool, there will also be a Splash Zone with giant beach-ball sprinklers and beach ball giveaways. Entertainment at On The Ave will include performances from local children’s groups as well as performances coordinated by Delray Beach’s Arts Garage. Among those performing will be local favorites, “Double Trouble” as well as the Arts Garage’s Drew Tucker and Plaid Blazer. The Arts Garage will also bring its Instrument Petting Zoo to the event. Emcee James T. will be back again this year to help keep the party going. “The music will be a combination of “Old School” and “New Cool,” Chrisanthus said. “We’ll be playing some old hits with a new spin.” Local community organizations, including the Spady Museum, the West Atlantic Redevelopment Coalition (WARC) and Delray Beach CRA will present displays and activities. Visitors can paint pots and plant seeds at The Frog Alley Community Garden display. There will also be a chance to take a photo in front of the DBMC’s “Hot Here” backdrop. For those who work up an appetite during On The Ave, there will be an assortment of food trucks and local restaurants on hand offering tasty treats. Guests can visit the Burger Fi Food Truck or stop by the Keurig Brew It Up van for a free cup of coffee. Visitors to the area will also get a chance to
stop by local shops, which will stay open late. “Moving On The Ave to West Atlantic Avenue gives our local merchants a chance to reach new audiences during the summer,” says Stephanie Immelman, executive director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative.

You hear a lot these days about the medical profession. Some of the news is good and other times what you hear is not very complimentary.
There is one thing, however, that every patient wants, and that is a good caring doctor. They also want a doctor who doesn’t fly out of the room after eight minutes and doesn’t keep you waiting for months when you have an emergency. That’s why Dr. Joanna Widdows opened up Associates of Internal Medicine in Delray Beach. Dr. Widdows was born and raised
in West Palm Beach and did her residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami. She was the Program Director and teacher for medical students and residents at Wellington Regional Medical Center for 14 years. “Our goal is to make going to the doctor a smooth process that flows naturally for our patients.

We make sure each patient is treated as a family member,” said Dr. Widdows, who attended college at University of Michigan and Medical School at Nova Southeastern University in Miami. The result is that this Internal Medicine practice continues to grow to meet the needs of the community. Recently they added a new doctor to their office, Arpit Patel, DO. Dr. Patel did his internship in internal medicine in Dr. Widdows’ office and is a well rounded primary care doctor now working fulltime at Associates of Internal Medicine. Not only do they have two doctors in the practice, but there is a nurse practitioner who is beloved by all. Elaine Fredrickson, ARNP has worked with Dr. Widdows since 2003 and joined the practice full-time last year. “Elaine gives compassionate care to people of all ages. Many of her long term patients have followed her to our office because they know she is the best,” said Dr. Widdows. You don’t have to convince Carrie of that fact. She learned it firsthand. “I love Elaine and will travel to the moon and back to see her, distance will not keep me away.” There are plenty of people who are smitten with this family-style medical practice. They like the fact that patients can have an assortment of important tests in the office instead having to see a specialist. Patients also like the kind caring compassionate treatment they get at Associates of Internal Medicine. Some of the specialized tests given in the office are Electrocardiograms, Pulmonary Function Tests, Ear Lavages, Lab Services, Nebulizer Treatments, Glaucoma Checks, most vaccines and other routine medical tests. They also do high school
sports physicals and college physicals for budding young leaders of tomorrow. Another state-of-the-art feature at Associates of Internal Medicine is their patient Web Portal. This has been created for patients to be able to have 24/7 access to their charts, x-rays and other tests. “The web portal is an important tool in assisting patients so they always have a list of their medications, important lab tests and are able to access their records for emergency room or specialist visits. We encourage our patients to sign into the web portal and become familiar with their medical records,” said Carlos Fernandez. There are other advantages to this family friendly medical practice – and one of them is that patients are monitored and cared for. We make sure our patients receive the response they need and answer all their medical questions. We like our patients to have labwork a week before their appointment so results are available to discuss at visit. It is important to be able to answer all medical questions and build a confidence with patients by addressing all their concerns, said Dr. Joanna Widdows. Some of these changes are dietary and others are related to exercise and main-
tenance of healthy living habits. According to practice patients are monitored to make sure their blood work is good and that their medications are adjusted if necessary. “We try to empower the patient to help them live healthy lives. If it means suggesting Weight Watchers and exercise for their health issues we do what is needed to have them live their best life.” As a teacher and program director for medical students and residents Dr. Widdows is adept at explaining the process of disease to patients. “It’s my nature - and is very important to me - to help patients understand their conditions and illnesses so they can take better care of themselves. For in-depth care we are thorough, and if the diagnosis is more serious then we spend time talking about specialists we have lined up to take care of a patient. This way they know we will be there from the beginning of the process to the end of treatment.” The staff of Associates of Internal Medicine has been known to go the extra mile for patients. That is why their staff is highly trained to meet each patient’s medical needs. When you walk into the office you will be warmly greeted by Gina. Following
registration you will get an annual prevention exam and complex care: that includes testing for diabetes, thyroid disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, osteoporosis and more. DANA LITTLE
The New Delray Beach Director of Planning And Zoning By Diane Feen

Dana Little has always known there is a time and place for everything. It’s as much a part of his being as the oxygen he breathes.
There’s a good reason. His father John was the Planning Director of Coral Gables and he wanted to make sure his ten-year-old son had a scale, a triangle and a T-square. These tools helped Dana create floor plans for his father’s small side jobs. But it was many years later in high school (in South Dade) that Dana really made up his mind to become an architect. The defining moment in his life that paved the way for his career in city planning and zoning was a shout not a whisper. “I grew up in the suburbs and as a kid it was difficult to navigate without a car due to poor suburban planning. We were completely auto-dependent and without a car you were a second or third class citizen. Florida cities are starting to address re-urbanization so people can live independently without a car.” A case in point – according to Little – is West Palm Beach. “We have a downtown trolley that connects people in West Palm Beach and assisted living facilities so they can get around without a car.” As the former Director of the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council and Urban Designer for the city of West Palm Beach, Little has always been a cheerleader for downtown development that resulted in a win-win for both businesses and residents. Luckily for city dwellers Little rarely sits on the sidelines. Instead he plays a pivotal role in devising ways to make city life joyful for everyone. In 2001 he was involved in Delray’s Downtown Master Plan to expand the city and address the controversy of development. According to Jeff Perlman, former Mayor of Delray, “The city had just

finished a hugely controversial and contentious process relating to Worthing Place, the first large mixed use project on Atlantic Avenue. The size of the project (six stories and over 90 units per acre) divided the town.” Little was one of the people chosen (along with others) to hold educational seminars and create a design studio so citizens could watch architects, urban designers and planners sketch out ideas from the public. “Dana was at the forefront of this effort, working hand in hand with our community, planning staff and CRA. He has a great feel for people, understands town planning and new urbanism, and has an innate talent for creating places people like to be,” adds Perlman. This sense of place and priorities has always been a passion of Little’s. He was raised with a stellar work ethic and a sense of public service. “My father John was proud of being a public servant and always said it was an honorable profession.” His son seemed to imbibe similar principles. He knows that public service is a high calling and he has created legendary city services and ideas. Little was instrumental in the Marin - St. Lucie 2035 Regional Long Range Transportation Plan, the South Florida East Coast Rail Station Charrettes, the Downtown Riviera Beach Citizen’s Master Plan, CRA Plan and Form-Based Code, and the Broward Blvd. Gateway Master Plan. His work has not only been recognized by his peers, but the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association gave him the Award of Merit in 2013 and the Award of Excellence in 2006. In 2005 he received the John Nolen Medal for Contri-
butions to Urbanism in Florida. Those around him are not surprised. “Dana is the smartest, most thoughtful, hardworking public servant I have ever had the privilege of working with,” said Michael Busha, The Executive Director of the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council. “He’s funny, a gifted public speaker and puts people at ease with his knowledge. He’s also a great listener and has expertise in city and urban design, a rare combination.” Because of his humility and dedication Little is the last person to toot his own horn. He rarely talks about his accomplishments and when asked what he is most proud of he says: “My two children, tenyear-old Aiden and eight-year-old Lauren.” But if you ask those who know him you will hear accolades usually reserved for ones eulogy. “Dana is the complete package. He is talented, hard working, has an incredible sensibility for authentic architecture. He also understands what it takes to make a place not just good, but great. I took him on every job I had (until we hired him) because I knew I could count on his opinion to bounce off the difficult issues in different communities,” said architect Marcela Camblor, of Marcela Camblor Associates. As the incoming planning and zoning director of Delray, Little will get to exercise his expertise in keeping Delray Beach the ideal place to live, work and play. He knows that Delray has a strong urban fabric, yet understands the need to keep business in play. “The best cities are a big collection of neighborhoods. You have to be discerning about growth and development.” Like most love affairs you have to understand the boundaries and needs of everyone involved. Luckily for Delray, Little has the knowledge (and passion) to keep Delray thriving without compromising its integrity. He is also quick to note that the awards he has won were a collaborative effort. “Everyone has a role, a place and skill-set to be utilized to make our cities better places. South Florida has unique challenges for growth and mobility. You can’t build your way out of congestion – you have to address it.” If you ask others about Little’s ability to rise to the challenges that will affect Delray in the future Busha has some thoughts. “Delray is lucky to have Dana. But people need to support and trust him; he has spent his life working at making cities bet-
ter all over the country and the world.” Keeping true to his humble roots Little credits some of success to others. “My wife Anthea (an architect) is the brains behind the operation. We have worked together in six or seven jobs and have known each other since college. And, my mother Caroline was my rock who taught me proper English (she taught English at my high school).”
If life is a mirror then it is easy to see how both Dana and Anthea are public servants with a supreme desire to make cities live up to their full potential. Camblor agrees. “I know that Dana has the ability to take Delray Beach to the level of competitiveness and resilience that only Delray can achieve. He will make sure that the city preserves its Village by the Sea character throughout this process.” www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | August 2014

Come Taste A Bit Of Italy

When you have passion for your work it becomes a labor of love. That’s why Sharon Aloisio opened one of the first (and only) Neapolitan-style pizza restaurants in South Florida. Called Scuola Vecchia, this bastion of Italian fare is over three years old, yet is still feels like a start-up.
The reason: Aloisio is always on the hunt for new menu items, authentic recipes and recently added an Italian Master Pizzaiolo (pizza chef). “I am in love with Italy; their pizza, their culture, their people and their way of life,” says Aloisio, who is always on-site greeting customers or behind the scenes whipping up a plate of homemade lasagna or fettuccini. That’s how Aloisio rolls. She is no stranger to hard work and enjoys showcasing a 200-year-old tradition of pizza making that hails from Napoli, Italy. That’s why she bought 90

an authentic wood burning oven in Italy made of volcanic stone that heats up to 950 degrees and cooks pizza in 90 seconds. Aloisio also uses authentic Caputo flour pizza dough that has less carbs (and fat) than traditional pizza dough. Add that to the fresh homemade mozzarella cheese and imported Italian San Marzano tomatoes and you have a real culinary gem. “We are just back from Bologna and Scuola Vecchia serves better pizza than anything we had there. The pasta is great too! It’s the best in Delray. This is an owner- managed restau-

rant, not a chain and the owner is always on site. We found this place friendly and welcoming, it’s a terrific,” said Sue from Washington. It’s comments like Sue’s that keeps Aloisio thinking up new menu items and unique offerings in this quaint intimate setting. Her new Master Pizzaiolo, Roberto Canonito used to be a Scuola Vecchia customer, but is now part of the team. Like the oven (and the flour) Canonito is from Italy and has been making pizza since he was a teen. He worked at the famed Acqualina Resort & Spa in Sunny Isles and has a passion for Italian culture and its culinary fabulousness just like Aloisio. The other exciting news at Scuola Vecchia is that they have created a new menu to be unveiled this fall. Included in the new menu will be a traditional Italian Brunch (think pizza with two eggs on top) as well as Panini’s. We recently got a glimpse (and a sample) of the Panini’s and they are terrific. Made with Italian pizza dough and heated up in their sizzling Italian oven they come to the table begging to be devoured. The Panini Estivo is made with fresh homemade pesto sauce, prosciutto cotto and fresh caciocavallo cheese. The Caprese Panini is also terrific and is made with fresh spring mix, homemade mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, imported olive oil and has a balsamic glaze. Not only is everything made fresh, but the warm

pizza dough makes this Panini a real treat. That’s the difference with an ownermanaged restaurant. You get farm fresh ingredients and everything is made perfect to please. It’s also the reason that new items are tested and refined to make your taste buds rejoice. The newest pizza, called The Romeo, is named after Aloisio’s grandson and is a testament to amore. Made with homemade mozzarella cheese, potatoes, fresh rosemary and pancetta, it is simply divine. Light and tasty The Romeo is sensational. And in the fall you will find that it is part of the line-up for brunch combined with that secret something that makes the word breakfast a headliner. Although Scuola Vecchia was created to showcase (and savor) the pizza of Naples, Aloisio added pasta dishes to the menu. Made with homemade pasta and adorned with sauces that are light, tasty and mouthwatering each one is terrific. Some of the favorites are the vegetable Lasagna, fettuccini Bolognese and homemade meatballs. “I have people who come into the restaurant and tell me our pasta sauce and pizza reminds them of their family’s recipe from their Italian homeland. I have a customer who comes every week for Veggie Lasagna and another one who comes two times a week for the fettuccini Bolognese or meat lasagna,” said Aloisio. It’s easy to see why they have such rabid fans. The food is made with love and is seasoned delicately not drenched in heavy sauces or thick dough. They also added a $6 Happy Hour menu from 5pm to 7pm that includes a choice of salad, antipasti, pasta or special pizza. Also new is a wonderful private label Scuola Vecchia wine that comes in either white or red. Unlike most private label wines this one is excellent and won’t disappoint.
They also have a full selection of Italian wine and beer to quench your thirst. “We have grown and evolved. My dream was to bring a piece of Italy to Delray Beach and make authentic Napolitano pizza. We are so happy with our success. Everyone who works here loves what they are doing,” said Aloisio. That passion is pretty obvious to those who dine there. “Eating at Scuola Vecchia was a total ‘party in my mouth.’ I was so unbelievably happy to find that the pizza was just as amazing as I remembered it. We ordered a Keste, a Prosciutto e Arugola, and a Prosciutto di Parma – and all were out of this world. The service was fantastic and the food couldn’t have been better,” said Sarah of Delray Beach. There are a lot of reasons to come to Scuola Vecchia. There is a fabulous selection of red and white pizzas, a full antipasti menu, wonderful fresh salads and desserts that make one remember why Italy is for those who appreciate the finer things in life. Their flourless Chocolate Caprese Cake is beyond verbal exaltation (made with almond flour, topped with chocolate glaze and sprinkled with powdered sugar). They also have Pizza Dolce (sweet ricotta cheese and sliced almonds drizzled with honey and powdered sugar), Angioletti con Nutella, pizza Nutella and a scrumptious homemade Tiramisu. Come to where Italian food is celebrated and revered. You’ll leave a little happier and a whole lot more fulfilled. As they say in Italy – Benvenuto! In a heavy saucepan over medium heat reduce the cream by half. While the cream is reducing scrub and de-beard the mussels. Dice the fennel into small pieces. Slice the shallots into thin strips. When the cream is reduced, add the garlic and seafood base and stir to combine. In a large stock pot over medium heat, combine the mussels, shallots, fennel, spinach and cream sauce and bring to a simmer. Cover the pot tightly and simmer for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the Parmesan cheese and stir to combine. Discard any unopened mussels. Best served over pasta.

Are the Raw and Fresh Food Warnings Over Stated?
W
e keep hearing the warning bells from the FDA concerning food contamination and recalls. Many of the messages focus on only a small segment of food production and that is the meat and poultry category. They warn against handling the raw meats and poultry that we fix for our pets and ourselves and also highly discourage feeding or eating raw or “undercooked meats and poultry.” Is this danger to the level that the FDA is making it out to be? Let’s look at the science first. We live in a bacteria filled, pathogen laden world. In fact a healthy human body contains more bacteria cells than blood cells. It’s actually an important part of our basic physiology that keeps us healthy. We have things like e.coli, salmonella, and many other strains of bacteria in our digestive tract that are there to aid in the digestion of foods. We are confronted with these pathogens as we go through a normal day. Tests show that everything from tables to doorknobs, eating utensils, cutting boards, swimming pools and even our lawns contain a plethora of pathogens. Now let’s look at the diets of every living creature on this planet. Every creature eats raw food for its’ entire life except for humans. In nature there are no microwaves, ovens, processing plants or food additives. There are no medical
centers, supplement shops or any drugs prescribed. There is usually only rare incidence of true disease outbreaks and yet these creatures have thrived throughout time. If foods in nature are healthy enough to feed our natural wildlife and allow them healthy offspring and long lives, where does the problem begin…and what can you do to provide yourself and your furry family members a safe food? Let’s look at the warnings themselves. The FDA says that we need to handle our natural products in very specific ways to avoid contaminations of our bodies from the food. “Wash your hands thoroughly after handling meat or poultry and completely cook it well done to kill the bacteria.” They are in charge of inspecting and approving our food as safe. Are they saying their methods and inspections are that flawed? Is our system of sterile food processing facilities worse and more contaminated than the field where a wolf just killed a rabbit or a deer? How about our own hunting populous and farmers? Are they more at risk when they process their own meat at home? Statistics from the FDA itself show most recalled products over the past ten years are processed foods including dry and canned pet foods, made in these safe facilities from inspected ingredients. Our system of CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operations) is producing animals with weak immune systems that are compromising our food system because of the agencies that are responsible for protecting us. Instead of challenging the system that is producing harmful pathogens, they are attempting to convince us that we need to be protected by more processing . A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... It’s Not Me, It’s You! Get the Pitcher? Cindy, a single, 45 year old professional, attractive woman from Boca was tired of hearing her parents tell her she was too picky and needed to get out and date more. In an effort to fill the menu with more choices, she reluctantly joined Eharmony. After conversations with a few different men to get her feet wet and get the EHARM flow, she decided to finally meet one in person. Dave was a 49 year old, divorced professional with no children living in Pembroke Pines. On paper, a good catch! From the start, the conversations were light and fun and upon meeting, there was a strong physical chemistry. Within a month, they had been on a few dates and things were beginning to look promising. On a recent Friday night, Dave invited Cindy to dinner near his home. Cindy happily volunteered. One glass of wine, led to another and another and by midnight it was clear that Cindy had to make a responsible decision to spend the night with Dave and not try to “MacGyver” 95 late at night. Well kudos to Dave for insisting Cindy stay over and for having the class to bring out a fresh set of sheets. During light conversation, Dave indicated that he needs to relieve himself several times a night and that he has a pitcher on hand by his bedside. Blinded by the most disturbing reality; the evidence on the nightstand. There in all its glory was the glass pitcher. When Cindy recollected this story, I couldn’t hold my laughter at bay. She proceeded to tell me that when she saw it, her first instinct were that things were going to get real kinky, real quick, as the night progressed. (Anyone heard of a “golden shower”)? She inquired further and would have probably accepted a twisted sexually driven reason but when the truth actually came out, her fears were even more confirmed. ter to the bathroom. He conveyed that he empties the gas tank via nightstand and confirmed that his last girlfriend didn’t mind. In utter disbelief and complete mortification, Cindy intimated her displeasure and disgust and kindly requested that he refrain from engaging in this practice that night, while she was his house guest. It’s pretty obvious when a flame goes out. It’s safe to say that this was the defining moment for Cindy. “Where you go from here” she silently reasoned with herself. Too tipsy to drive home, she got into bed, turned her back to him and willed herself to sleep, hoping not to smell the sweet scents of airborne yellow goodness permeating thru the master bedroom, in the dawns early light. When morning came, she tiptoed around the side of the bed, and low and behold she saw the pitcher on the floor, nearly ¾ full. Remember the Road Runner cartoon? After quick verbal “good morning”, she bolted as fast as she could –skids marks on the driveway. She texted
Dave later in the day to start the breakup process, but he never responded. As I write this article, he still hasn’t surfaced. He must be upset at Cindy for confronting this unsanitary situation. Looking back on this, it’s actually quite funny. Is this what dating has come to in 2014? Do people have bizarre and sometimes unsanitary habits that rear their ugly heads sooner than later? Are there women out there who do similarly disgusting things? Perhaps! Is Cindy being too picky per her parents? Cindy shared this with her Mom and her response, “There are no words…” The lady doth protest too much, me thinks? Me thinks, NOT! I am not trying to judge but unless you have thrown out your back or are bed ridden for something medical, then there is really no excuse. What’s even worse is that Dave didn’t hide his shame but rather acted as though this is acceptable behavior for a grown adult with two working legs and the ability to take a short walk to one of 5 bathrooms in his 5,000 square foot home. Unless you are Anton Jackson (Damon Wayans character on In Living Color), the gross drunken homeless person who lives in a corrugated cardboard box and frequently carries his “personal facilities”, a jar that he used as a toilet which seemed to contain a pickle and brine- then face it, you have NO Excuse. Maybe Dave needs “Depends”? I think Costco might be running a bulk special this week. Don’t miss out! Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

People Matter
{
If I’ve learned one thing in my career, it’s that you can have the best systems, the best platform, a great idea, plenty of money and every other advantage but you’ll fail if you don’t attract and keep the right people.
It’s a simple concept, really. But very difficult to achieve. Yet, whether you are running a business, a city, a school or a non-profit you will not be able to achieve lasting success unless you create a culture that attracts, nurtures, rewards, ignites and inspires people. Good people. And if you work hard enough and create just such an environment, you have to realize that your creation is fragile and will not survive complacency or lack of accountability. If you fail to constantly iterate, engage and assess, the gains you made will erode. Achieving success is just one part of the journey; the key is to sustain success. That’s the prize and it is hard to attain. But worth the effort. For many years, the cities of Boca Raton and Delray Beach worked with a consultant named Lyle Sumek. Lyle was a former assistant city manager in San Diego and he worked with cities across the country on goal setting and implementation. Lyle had a concept he called “municipal math”; which essentially said it could take 20 plus years to build something of value, but only a year or two to squander what was built if you make the wrong decisions or hire/elect the wrong people. The sad part of municipal math is that once you mess up, it could take 10 years or more to get something back and there were guarantees you would. Municipal math was a sobering concept and it stuck with me. Leadership matters. People matter. I’m a firm believer that leadership is the key ingredient to success in any endeavor, but I also believe that we do a poor job of training and developing leaders. We don’t teach leadership in schools, we don’t study why leaders succeed or stumble, but yet we long for great leaders.

I can think of no other scenario in life in which we yearn for something but don’t take steps to make it happen. If we want better medical outcomes, we invest in science. If we want better educators, we invest in teacher training. In business, we invest in products and technology. But yet we don’t make a similar investment in identifying, training and developing leaders. As a result, we watch helplessly as Congress fails miserably to serve our country. We shake our heads when presidents, governors, mayors and other elected officials fail our communities. In business, we see investments go down the drain; victims of egotistical CEO’s or watch in disgust as a manufacturer looks the other way and produces cars that endanger their customers all because of a culture that enabled people to look the other way. All are symptoms of poor or inadequate leadership. I believe that we need to start studying and investing in leadership education and that we need to make such courses available far and wide, in all industries and endeavors. We live in a great nation. Imagine how much better it would be, how many problems would be solved, how many people would be positively impacted if we were able to develop leaders as accomplished as our best coders, financial minds and scientists. Just imagine.
