Message from the President Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another. - Erma Brombeck

Alicia Battle President 2014-2015 abattlek@yahoo.com

As winter begins to fade, the days start to get a little longer and the weather warms; the signs of spring are in the air. Spring brings many exciting events in the community (like Live on the Lawn) and in our League. Events that create the possibility of personal growth, inspiration, and the continuation of a journey to innovation. This weekend, I attempted to relax my mind in order to begin my creative League thoughts for the week. I recall visiting a website called brainpickings.org. I found the following bit of advice, “Be a network thinker. Understanding how networks work is one of the most important literacies of the 21st century.” Indeed, we can see this idea at work within the Junior League. Who we are connected to, and how we are connected, drive our community passions and our most meaningful projects and collaborations. As sustainers know, the Junior League of Athens offers women the opportunity to jumpstart, develop and sustain this skillset. Together, we are inspired to make a collective impact in our community while celebrating the efforts of other community volunteers. As we look toward April, we celebrate the importance of making a difference in communities with National Volunteer Week. National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, was established in 1974 and has increased in scope each year, gaining support from leaders around the world. It is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. It brings the nations’ communities together to collectively take action to foster positive transformation. JLA members embody the goals and ideals of National Volunteer week each and every day through our in service and community volunteer opportunities. In fact, this month, we will celebrate our 20th Volunteer Awards at our April GMM on April 13th. On this day, our Mission will reach beyond our organization and members into the community at large by recognizing community volunteers in the Athens area. I hope to see everyone there to celebrate the tireless and impactful efforts of those nominated for the Teen Volunteer of the Year, Collegian Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement awards. With Volunteerism in mind,

Alicia Battle 2014-2015 President

Board Meeting Minutes: March

80 Taylor Grady House ~ Monday March 23, 2015 ~ 6:30 pm

Members Present: Alicia Battle, Jennifer Whitaker, Pattie Strickland, Lauren Williams, Katherine Crosby, Carey Brown, Karen Gilmore, Michelle Dickens, Deanne Rosso, Tracey Hickey, Julie McGinty, Laurie Wilburn-Bailey, Oonagh Benson, Jennifer Register, Katherine Barrow. Members Absent: Jo Sullivan. Michelle Dickens called the meeting to order at 6:23 pm. Happy Dollars-4-Literacy were shared and collected. Oonagh Benson motioned to approve the Consent Agenda and Jennifer Register seconded. The agenda passed. The Consent Agenda includes Council VP report, February financials and February Board minutes. Jennifer Whitaker talked about history of Marketplace and history of Ways and Means events to explain how the $60 Fall/Spring requirement evolved. The idea of having a raffle drawing for members paying the $60 event requirement was discussed. Carey Brown shared the idea to host a League social event at the Taylor Grady House similar to Jingle Mingle as a League Spring event to celebrate 80 years of service. Karen Gilmore shared an idea to have a No Show Dinner with a raffle drawn that day. A No Show Dinner is a fundraiser that guests do not attend. Members could post pictures and share how they attended their “No Show Dinner on social media. The Board agreed that the $60 requirement should be attached to a social event, raffle, and/or 80 years of service celebration. Alicia Battle has reached out to members to form an ad hoc committee for our 80 years of service celebration planning. Katherine Crosby reviewed policy changes. The Board discussed adding a particular date to the bylaws for Provisional dues. The discussion was tabled to the end of the meeting agenda. Lauren Williams reviewed League finances. $29,146.68 is the current total profit for Bargainza. Lauren will update once expenses are subtracted, raffle profits are totaled, and percent night profits are included. The JLA Bookkeeper has asked for a raise and this is being reviewed. Jennifer Register reviewed the submitted Sustainer and Active member dues with the Board. Deanne Rosso contacted Partner Security for a quote for 2 security cameras. There is a $35 monthly monitoring fee and $1758.16 for 2 cameras. As of right now, adding these cameras would not change the Taylor Grady House insurance cost. Deanne Rosso is going to continue to find out more details on camera monitoring. The Board discussed LEAD Athens training for 2015-2016. The President Elect has the option to consider participating in LEAD Athens. If they have already served a year in LEAD Athens or choose not to join, another candidate can be considered. Michelle Dickens motioned for Pattie Strickland to join LEAD Athens 2015-2016.

[4]

There was a unanimous approval from the Board. Tracey Hickey recently spoke with Lauren Ellison about Live on the Lawn and shared details from this conversation. The committee would appreciate payment for tickets from members ASAP to give the caterer a head count. It would be great to have a few Board members to assist with the event check in. The committee would like to borrow spot lights, mason jars, glass drink dispensers, and commercial trash cans for the night of the event from members. Lauren Ellison encourages all to promote LOTL on social media. A Facebook Live on the Lawn event page has been created. Katherine Barrow reviewed League members’ status changes as well as fulfillments for Bargainza shifts. The Board discussed ideas on the current amount of League members and brainstormed on ideas of how to promote the JLA. The JLA emphasizes and provides Leadership training which is a tool that most organizations do not offer. Pattie Strickland shared the list of unfulfilled JLA Leadership positions. The Board discussed eligible members to fulfill these positions or opted to have just a Chair for a committee. Katherine Crosby motioned to change the bylaws to reflect a previous Board Meeting discussion regarding Provisional financial responsibilities. Provisional members will be required to pay new member dues and a course fee on or before the Provisional Retreat. If dues are not paid by September 15, she will be dropped from the Provisional class. Tracey Hickey seconded the motion. All Board members were in favor. Oonagh Benson brought Belk tickets to sale for the annual Belk Charity Event on May 2, 2015. Tickets will be available at the April GMM. Karen Gilmore thanked the Board for help with the Sustainer Luncheon. 55 guests attended the Luncheon. Karen reminded the Board of the Leadership friends and family dinner on March 31, 2015. Many more monetary donations for the Endowment have been received in the last month thanks to our Sustainers. Tracey Hickey announced that Cookbook is asking for volunteers to assist with their Twilight event and all other Cookbook events for this League year. The meeting adjourned at 8:55 pm. Respectfully Submitted, Carey Brown, Recording Secretary

Dr. Bierema encourages women to truly value women leaders. The Taylor Grady House committee will discuss 80 years of service of the Athens Junior Assembly/JLA at the April General Membership meeting. An 80 years of service video will be played at the April GMM as well. Michelle Dickens presented Sustainers Charlotte Thomas Marshall and Mary Bondurant Warren. Both ladies have been outstanding leaders in the Athens Junior Assembly and the Athens community. They shared fond memories and accomplishments of the Junior Assembly during the late 1970’s. Cookbook The Cookbook Committee is pleased to announce that our spring schedule is shaping up with a lot of fun activities. We are hosting the After Hours Chamber event on Thursday April 9th at the Taylor Grady. This is a great opportunity to network and support the League. Mark your calendars.

Please let us know if your committee would like to be present and discuss your events/activities at Twilight so we can coordinate a space for you and any information and materials you would like to present. GO AHEAD AND SIGN UP FOR TWILIGHT SHIFTS ON CLOSERWARE NOW.

Also, we are going to be hosting a non-profit booth along with Bargainaza at the Athens Twilight Criterion on April 24th and 25th. This is HUGE project for the Cookbook and give us a chance to increase League awareness in the community.

Live on the Lawn is swiftly approaching. Let’s keep the momentum and League spirit alive by grabbing up Cookbook shifts to add sweet treats to the Spring Event on Saturday, April 11th.

Our booth at Twilight is a great opportunity to get the JLA in front of the community and to talk about our programs and what we hope to achieve in this community. CHAIRS AND CO-CHAIRS, this booth is sponsored by Cookbook BUT it is for the League to showcase ALL of our programs that we support and this is great chance to talk to the community about YOUR PROGRAM.

TGH/ Hospitality Our library donation is coming together, but we need you! In order to give the library the most complete version of our history we can, we are asking you to help in two ways: 80 years of scrapbooks, photos, documents, and other items will be on display at the Taylor-Grady House April 12 between 2 and 4pm. Please feel free to drop by during that time to have a look and possibly help us identify a few of the faces and places depicted. Also, we would love to have your Junior Assembly/ Junior League items to help complete our donation to the library. If you have any photos, t-shirts, reports, or other “stuff” you would like to contribute, please contact Daynes Parker.

Capital Day Capitol Day was attended by Katie Waters, Alicia Battle, Carla Colquitt, Jill Hauserman, Ashley Stalvey and Laura Beth Palmer. Our group interacted with Representatives and Senators from all over the state. We spent time discussing some of the current legislation in motion with the Senate Pro Tem, David Shafer, and the State Attorney General, Sam Olens. Both of them commended the Junior Leagues of Georgia for our ongoing advocacy efforts on behalf of women, children and poverty. Sam Olens particularly discussed the need for non-profits to help with the recovery process of women and children who have been freed from human trafficking until state and federal funding can “catch up.”

Junior League Journey Placement Advisor: Cassie Malone First Active Year: 2008

I grew up in Augusta, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia. After I graduated, I moved to Atlanta for a couple years before moving back to Athens when I got married. It was a difficult transition going from student to young, married professional in a small college town. Luckily, I had a friend who proposed me for Junior League. I am outgoing by nature, so being introduced to a group of young women with so many similarities was perfect for me and I am so glad my JLA journey began when it did. I became very active in the League pretty much right away, and I was recommended for leadership my first active year. The first position I held was co-chair of Bargainza. A good friend was one of the chairs and it was such a fun committee to help lead. The following year as a Bargainza chair was quite busy, (I had a baby that year) but it was filled with personal growth and confidence because of my involvement with such a great committee and the JLA leadership in general. I learned so much about myself as a leader and really grew to appreciate the many facets of League involvement. The following year, I began my four-year journey on the Board of Directors. I began as Community Partners co-chair, followed by chair. My last two years on the board were spent as Assistant Trea-

surer and Treasurer. Community Partners was a good fit for me, as I have a sales role in my professional life. I learned a lot from past chairs about the role and am grateful for the great organizational skills that came along with it. Speaking of organization, my largest League role to date was Treasurer. It was a very busy year for me, and my background is not in finance, but I grew so much that year with the responsibility of such an important board position. I learned a lot from the past treasurers and learned the behind-the-scenes League information which many members don’t experience. It was definitely an eye-opening and rewarding experience that assisted in my personal and professional growth. Currently in my seventh active year, I have enjoyed serving as a member of Placement and Membership Support. I am surrounded by seasoned League members and it is nice to witness the growth in the League as a whole from this standpoint. Being available for current active members to discuss future League plans and their own personal journeys has been rewarding. I truly treasure my time in the League and have made multiple life-long friends through this involvement. I’ve learned so much and look forward to continuing to make a difference in this community!
