MISSION AND TESLA ECOSYSTEM

Tesla believes that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position in this regard. The very purpose of Tesla’s existence is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. In furtherance of this mission, we are excited to publish our second annual Impact Report. Transparency and disclosure are important for our customers, employees, and shareholders, which is why we have expanded the Impact Report’s content this year.

Tesla mission and ecosystem

01

Tesla aims to continue to increase the proportion of renewable energy usage at our factories in an effort to minimize the carbon footprint for every mile traveled by our products and their components in our supply chain. All of the factories that we built from the ground-up, such

as Gigafactory Nevada and Gigafactory Shanghai, and our forthcoming Gigafactories in Berlin and North America, are designed from the beginning to use energy from renewable sources. Making a significant and lasting impact on environmental sustainability is difficult to achieve

without securing financial sustainability for the long term. We generated positive Free Cash Flow (operating cash flow less capex) of more than $1 billion for the first time in 2019. We believe the notion that a sustainable future is not economically feasible is no longer valid.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE

SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

“Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable of energy ” Tesla was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers who wanted to prove that people didn’t need to compromise to drive electric – that electric vehicles can be better, quicker and more fun to drive than gasoline cars. Today, Tesla builds not only all-electric vehicles but also infinitely scalable clean energy generation and storage products. Tesla believes the faster the world stops relying on fossil fuels and moves towards a zero-emission future, the better. Launched in 2008, the Roadster unveiled Tesla’s cutting-edge battery

10

technology and electric powertrain. From there, Tesla designed the world’s first ever premium all-electric sedan from the ground up – Model S – which has become the best car in its class in every category. Combining safety, performance, and efficiency, Model S has reset the world’s expectations for the car of the 21st century with the longest range of any electric vehicle, over-the-air software updates that make it better over time, and a record 0-60 mph acceleration time of 2.28 seconds as measured by Motor Trend. In 2015, Tesla expanded its product

line with Model X, the safest, quickest and most capable sport utility vehicle in history that holds 5-star safety ratings across every category from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Completing CEO Elon Musk’s “Secret Master Plan,” in 2016, Tesla introduced Model 3, a low-priced, high-volume electric vehicle that began production in 2017. Soon after, Tesla unveiled the safest, most comfortable truck ever – Tesla Semi – which is designed to save owners at least $200,000 over a million miles based on fuel costs alone. In 2019, Tesla unveiled Model Y, a mid-size SUV, with seating for up to seven, and Cybertruck, which will have better utility than a traditional truck and more performance than a sports car. Tesla vehicles are produced at its factory in Fremont, California, and Gigafactory Shanghai. To achieve our goal of having the safest factories in the world, Tesla is taking a proactive approach to safety, requiring production employees to participate in a multi-day training program before ever setting foot on the factory floor. From there, Tesla continues to provide on-the-job training and track performance daily so that improvements can be made quickly. The result is that Tesla’s safety rate continues to improve while the production ramps. They become even more powerful – that’s the future we want.

CLEAN ENERGY

While many environmental reports focus on emissions generated by the manufacturing phase of products and future goals for energy consumption, we highlight the totality of the environmental impact of our products today. After all, the vast majority of emissions generated by vehicles today occur in the product-use phase— that is, when consumers are driving their vehicles. We believe that providing information on both sides of the manufacturing and consumeruse equation provides a clearer picture of the environmental impact of Tesla products, and we have done so this year largely through a lifecycle analysis detailed in this report.

WHICH IS DESIGNED TO SAVE OWNERS AT LEAST

$200,000 over a million miles based on fuel costs alone. Electric cars, batteries, and renewable energy generation and storage already exist independently, but when combined, they become even more powerful – that’s the future we want.

“I think it is possible for ordinary people to choose to be extraordinary” Elon Musk is a South Africanborn American entrepreneur and businessman who founded X.com in 1999 (which later became PayPal), SpaceX in 2002 and Tesla Motors in 2003. Musk became a multimillionaire in his late 20s when he sold his start-up company, Zip2, to a division of Compaq Computers. Musk made headlines in May 2012, when SpaceX launched a rocket that would send the first commercial vehicle to the International Space Station. He bolstered his portfolio with the purchase of SolarCity

in 2016 and cemented his standing as a leader of industry by taking on an advisory role in the early days of President Donald Trump’s administration. In January 2021, Musk reportedly surpassed Jeff Bezos as the wealthiest man in the world. Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. As a child, Musk was so lost in his daydreams about inventions that his parents and doctors ordered a test to check his hearing. He was bullied until he was 15 and went through a growth

spurt and learned how to defend himself with karate and wrestling.Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, is a Canadian model and the oldest woman to star in a Covergirl campaign. When Musk was growing up, she worked five jobs at one point to support her family. Musk’s father, Errol Musk, is a wealthy South African engineer. Musk spent his early childhood with his brother Kimbal and sister Tosca in South Africa. His parents divorced when he was 10. At age 17, in 1989, Musk moved to Canada to attend Queen’s University and avoid mandatory service in South African military. In 1992, Musk left Canada to study business and physics at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated with an undergraduate degree in economics and stayed for a second bachelor’s degree in physics. After leaving Penn, Musk headed to Stanford University in California to pursue a PhD in energy physics. However, his move was timed perfectly with the Internet boom, and he dropped out of Stanford after just two days to become a part of it, launching his first company, Zip2 Corporation in 1995. Musk became a U.S. citizen in 2002. campaign, which aims to plant 20 million trees around the world by 2020.

TESLA SOLAR ROOF

Solar Roof replaces your existing roof and brings it to life with beautiful solar tiles that can power your home for decades with the energy you produce. Replace your current roof with Solar Roof and power your home with a fully integrated solar system. With a seamless design, each tile looks great up-close or from the street, complementing your home’s architecture.

Beautiful solar without compromise

02

Tesla’s active solar shingles cost $2.01 per watt, which is lower than the current average cost of solar in the U.S. ... A Tesla solar roof is more expensive than getting your roof replaced and getting solar panels installed. However, if you really like the look of the solar roof, it could be worth

it for you. Does solar add value to a home? Absolutely. Tesla Solar Roofs, in particular, are a great choice for energy-efficient savings, a lower carbon footprint, and a beautiful modern look. Installing one also increases the value of your property. After a few delays to test the product for longevity,

reduce cost, and improve installation times, Tesla is finally starting to ramp up installation of the solar roof. Last quarter, Tesla almost tripled its Solar Roof deployments, and CEO Elon Musk said that it is Tesla’s next “killer product.” Solar panels don’t damage your roof when installed properly.

TA B L E O F C O N T E N T

ELECTRIC VEHICLE

“Tesla has reached goal of producing solar roof materials for 1,000 homes” In March 2021, Tesla updated its solar roof pricing yet again, except this time it got more expensive. The cost per watt of solar stayed the same, but the cost of the inactive shingles has gone up. The price of inactive tiles now varies, based on the complexity of your roof. The lowest you will pay for the inactive shingles is $9.75 per square foot, which is higher than their previous price of $7.65 per square foot. There is still no official count of how many Tesla solar roofs have been installed. What we do know is that Tesla solar roof installations have tripled

18

SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

from Quarter 2 to Quarter 3 of 2020, according to Tesla’s quarterly call. We can probably guess that it’s still a relatively low number, though. More recently, it’s been revealed that Tesla might be working on a new style of solar roof shingle. When the solar roof first launched it was intended to be offered in four different styles, but that never came to fruition. However, drone images from above one of Tesla’s testing facilities reveals a bronze, almost terracotta-colored shinge. Tesla’s active solar roofing tiles cost $2.01 per watt. The cost of the inactive shingles varies,

based on the complexity of your roof, which is determined by the pitch, number of obstructions on your roof and other features. The more complex a roof is, the more materials and labor are needed to replace the materials, which is why Tesla has implemented this pricing. The actual price you’ll pay for the inactive tile installation may vary after Tesla takes a more in-depth look at your roof. The actual cost of a Tesla solar roof will depend on the size of your home and your monthly energy usage. It may also change again after the Tesla design team does a remote inspection of your roof complexity. As of March 2021, the average cost per watt of solar is about $2.49 per watt in the U.S. before the federal tax credit. The cost per watt for solar shingles before the tax credit is $2.01. So, Tesla’s solar shingles are cheaper than the average. In most cases, the extra expense of a solar battery isn’t necessary, especially if you live in an area that offers net metering solar panel. So, the total cost to install a new roof and a conventional solar system would be cheaper than a Tesla solar roof overall, even though solar roof tiles have a lower cost per watt. The actual cost difference will depend on the roofing material you use to replace your roof, the solar panels you choose, and the contractor you choose.

CLEAN ENERGY

Replace your current roof with Solar Roof and power your home with a fully integrated solar system. With a seamless design, each tile looks great up-close or from the street, complementing your home’s architecture. Solar Roof is the only roof that can help pay for itself with the energy you produce. Power your home at the lowest price per watt of any national provider and take control of your monthly electricity bill. Solar Roof tiles are more than three times stronger than standard roofing tiles and are engineered for all-weather protection. With a 25-year warranty, Solar Roof lasts longer than an average roof and protects your home for decades to come.

CUMULATIVE ENERGY PRODUCED BY TESLA SOLAR PANELS VS. CONSUMED BY TESLA FACTORIES Tesla’s 3.5 Gigawatts of solar installations have produced more than 13 Terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity over their lifetime thus far, while the total energy use of all of the vehicles it has delivered has been about 5.26 TWh cumulatively. With an anticipated useful life of around 35+ years, Tesla’s current solar installations are expected to generate 86.5 TWh of energy, which Tesla points out is enough energy to power Washington, DC for 10 years. It is their goal that eventually all of their manufacturing energy needs are satisfied through renewable sources where possible. Additionally, they are hoping to see more Tesla vehicle customers installing solar panels or Solar Roof along with a Powerwall. They are striving to always remain a net contributor to renewable energy generation.

We’re on a mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Along the way, we’re building a culture that is safe, fair, and inclusive for all of our employees. It is incredibly important to Tesla that everyone looks forward to coming to work every day. We are proud to have built a company filled with employees of all backgrounds who possess

the energy and drive to accelerate our vision forward. Most importantly, for the three years ending 2021, Tesla employees had zero fatal injuries. Additionally, recordable injuries (as measured by injuries requiring medical treatment beyond first aid), restricted time, and lost time within our global manufacturing operations are trending

downward year over year. Our Total Recordable Injury Rate (TRIR) for 2021 at the Fremont Factory of 5.98 is 5% better than Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average for auto manufacturers with >1000 employees. Compared to 2020, our rate of injury per vehicle produced was reduced by more than 50%. Tesla cares deeply about safety.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE

SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

“Tesla charging stations are 100% powered by renewable energy” The main hit to the environment in regards to Tesla EV production is in the materials needed for the batteries. One of the prevalent arguments regarding EVs is the fact that they charge using electrical power. That power is most often sourced from the local power grid, which can be composed of a variety of sources including the very fossil fuels electric cars aim to eliminate. While Musk has repeatedly claimed that Tesla charging stations are 100% powered by renewable energy, this statement from a company spokesperson is likely closer to the truth. “We

26

aim for carbon neutrality, and where the market allows via wholesale power purchase, we source renewable energy, even though it is slightly more expensive. In Europe, the power for all our Supercharger stations is sourced by renewable energy. Continuing to convert our superchargers to solar power will push us further down that road.” To some degree, it’s out of Tesla’s hands when it comes to public electricity, including what the consumer uses once they get their car home. It’s up to each Tesla owner to invest in solar panels or subscribe to renewable energy sources

through their utility provider. It’s important to note the combination of energy sources varies widely across the country. For example, Iowa relies on wind for around 40% of its energy production while West Virginia sources nearly 100% of its energy from coal. Therefore, even an electric vehicle can be petroleumconsumptive in areas with a heavy reliance on fossil fuels. While Tesla may not be able to count on complete reliance on renewable energy, it does own a solar power production company. This adds up to a carbon offset, which is a good thing. However, it shouldn’t be considered when measuring the carbon footprint from Tesla cars as a whole. Battery disposal is another hot topic with concerns over massive, and potentially toxic, waste. However, the newest generation of batteries, especially Tesla batteries aimed at eliminating cobalt altogether, are highly recyclable. Not only can 90% of the battery be recycled, but even after its usable life in a Tesla, the battery can be used for energy storage for another 20 years or so. In addition, batteries can be refurbished by replacing bad cells or removing good cells to use in another battery.

BATTERY DISPOSAL & MATERIALS SOURCING Tesla has propelled EV production ahead by leaps and bounds with its innovation and dedication to sustainable practices. A common question we hear is, “What happens to Tesla vehicle battery packs once they reach their end of life?” An important distinction between fossil fuels and lithiumion batteries as an energy source is that while fossil fuels are extracted and used once, the materials in a lithium-ion battery are recyclable. When petroleum is pumped out of the ground, chemically refined, and then burned, it releases harmful emissions into the atmosphere that are not recovered for reuse. Battery materials, in contrast, are refined and put into a cell, and will still remain in the cell at the end of their life, when they can be recycled to recover valuable materials for reuse over and over again.

TESLA ‘BATTERY DAY’ PROMISES 56% REDUCTION IN BATTERY COST AND MUCH MORE Tesla’s TSLA -0.9% anticipated “Battery Day” revealed a variety of modest improvements to battery technology which together promise a significant drop in battery cost, a decent increase in battery capacity, and potential big results.

This will generate a 16% improvement in cell energy density, according to Tesla.

Consider that today, while EVs tend to cost more than similar gasoline buggies, they cost so much less to run (for energy and maintenance) that they are already competing in total cost of ownership. Even so, car buyers aren’t always fully rational on total cost of ownership, and having reduced up-front cost will make a big difference. Overall, Tesla is predicting:

ders had to win a lottery to attend in cars. When Tesla said something the audience liked, they all honked horns instead of applauding.

31

PRODUCT IMPACT

From the Model S Plaid Plus, Cybertruck and a new Gigafactory, if Tesla’s grand developments unfold as promised, 2021 should be a huge year for Team Musk. Making our products available to as many people as possible is key to our ability to achieve our mission. Since its founding, Tesla has been focused on increasing the utility of products making them better and more useful to our customers - while at the same time making them increasingly more affordable. Tesla fundamentally believes that you shouldn’t have to choose between price, quality, and sustainability.

Price equivalency and passive safety

04

There is clear relationship between range, how often an EV is utilized, and whether or not it is a primary-use vehicle. If owners are confident that their EV can be used for commuting, errands, and long road trips alike, the lower the likelihood they will feel they need to supplement their EV with an ICE vehicle. Surveys

consistently indicate that the real or perceived lack of EV range is the key reason why many people do not consider replacing their ICE with an EV. In order to ensure we displace as many ICE vehicles with EVs as possible, we have been focused on increasing the range of Tesla vehicles. While the vast majority of personal vehicle journeys

are relatively short and thus drivable on a single charge, consumers don’t buy cars that can meet most of their needs; they want cars that meet all of their driving needs. Since its introduction in 2012, the range of the Model S has increased by almost 50%, from 265 miles to 391 miles of range for the long-range variant.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE

SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

“What we expect to see from Elon Musk and company” Tesla is known for many wonderful things, but meeting deadlines has never been one of them. Regardless, the company and CEO Elon Musk have big things promised for this year, and with crazy growth in the company’s valuation in 2020, Tesla should have the resources to put more of its ambitious plans into action. Having said all of that, let’s take a look at why 2021 is expected to be such a grand year for the electric carmaker. Before we dive in, a caveat: Some of the items below were initially promised for last year -- if not multiple years ago. In the same fashion,

34

there’s certainly a possibility (likelihood?) that Tesla will continue to kick some projects further into the future. But, for now, if all goes according to plan, here’s what to expect from Tesla in 2021. Well, we didn’t expect to get a refreshed Model S with a new cockpit in 2021, but we did. Now, according to Tesla’s timeline, we’ll see a new Model S Plaid Plus launch in late 2021. It will come with a $139,900 price tag, 1,100 horsepower and will hit 60 mph in under two seconds. Oh, and it’ll go an estimated 520 miles on a single charge, according to the company.

In the meantime, orders for the refreshed Model S and Model X Plaid vehicles are open now This model is absolutely the biggest item on Tesla’s 2021 punch list. Revealed in late 2019, the distinctively styled Cybertruck is meant to enter production this year, with its most-powerful tri-motor variant scheduled first. Tesla has said a dual-motor Cybertruck will follow in late 2021, before the most affordable single-motor version rolls out off the assembly line in 2022. Without traditional dealer franchises like other automakers, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Tesla’s parts and service network has failed to keep pace with its sales ambitions. In 2021, that disparity figures to ease a bit, with the automaker reportedly set to open a new service center approximately once a week all year. In 2019, Tesla deliveries rose by 50%, yet its servicecenter footprint only grew by 12%. Look for Tesla to make up some ground in this department in 2021, a development that should lead to shorter service wait times, more convenient locations and happier customers. Tesla on Friday revealed its always-anticipated quarterly production and delivery figures. For the first quarter of this year, the carmaker said it delivered 184,800 vehicles in total.

CLEAN ENERGY

The foundation of Tesla’s mission rests first and foremost on our products. We are not just trying to build the best electric cars, we are striving to build the best cars, period. Our focus from the beginning has been to develop products that are not only sustainable, but also superior to fossilfuel alternatives in every way. Many incorrectly believe that choosing sustainable products requires consumers to compromise on price or performance, but Tesla vehicles combine performance, safety, efficiency, and competitive prices. Similarly, Tesla’s energy generation andstorage products power both urban and remote communities with reliable, affordable energy.

THE CARMAKER SAID IT DELIVERED IN TOTAL

184,800 During the first quarter, Tesla built 180,338 Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs. Of the total delivery figure, the electric sedan and SUV made up 182,780 cars. The vast majority of deliveries were for Tesla’s more “affordable” models.
