Tosca GIACOMO PUCCINI

Revival of the 1980 production. Sung in Italian with English supertitles Masterfully conceived by a consummate storyteller, Anthony Besch’s much-loved production transports Puccini's powerful drama to Fascist Italy in the 1940s, a setting entirely in tune with the dark intensity of this passionate tale.

FRI 4 MAY 7.15pm SUN 6 MAY 4pm TUE 8 MAY 7.15pm THU 10 MAY 7.15pm SAT 12 MAY 7.15pm

Floria Tosca is the talk of Rome, a famed opera diva with many dazzled admirers. But she only has eyes for one man, Mario Cavaradossi. As his behaviour becomes suspicious, she fears he has another woman. But the truth is far more dangerous. Obsessed by Tosca, Police Chief Scarpia is hunting the lovers, binding their fate with his own in a trap from which there is no escape.

TICKETS £10 - £67

Puccini’s music, at times heartbreakingly tender, at times powerful and harrowing, captures the sweeping span of this epic story - from the exquisite stillness of a silent dawn in Rome, to the raw drama of Tosca’s final, desperate plight. Susannah Glanville, star of Opera North’s 2009 production, returns to the title role. Francesco Corti conducts.

‘ETERNALLY POPULAR - A T0NIC’

MICHAEL BILLINGTON

14

ADAPTED AND DIRECTED BY Written in Brighton in 1887, Dandy Dick is the inaugural production of Theatre Royal Brighton Productions. This will be its first major revival for forty years, and stars Olivier Award-winner Patricia Hodge, whose career spans film (Betrayal, Behind Enemy Lines), theatre (Noises Off, Calendar Girls) and television (a BAFTA nomination for Hotel du Lac, The Falklands Play and, of course, Miranda). Nicholas Le Prevost’s distinguished stage career includes many productions at the National Theatre, including My Fair Lady, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award. More recently, he was seen in The Misanthrope with Keira Knightley. Dandy Dick tells the hilarious story of the Very Reverend Augustin Jedd, a pillar of Victorian respectability, who preaches regularly against the evils of the Turf. But a visit from his tearaway sister, herself an habitual gambler, leads him to risk all at the races, much against his better judgement. Mayhem ensues, with romantic intrigue, mistaken identity and a runaway horse . . . Following his huge success with The Madness of George III in the West End, Christopher Luscombe directs a solid gold cast of comic actors in what is surely the must-see comedy of 2012.

By Robin Jenkins Adapted by Peter Arnott

Man, Two

Guvnors

Directed by Kenny Ireland Designed by Hayden Griffin The Cone Gatherers is a haunting tale of good versus evil, and demonstrates the destructive power of envy and prejudice. This classic Scottish novel tells the tale of two brothers who are happily employed gathering cones in a forest in order to replenish the trees felled for the WWII effort. However, their innocence and happiness is threatened by the obsessive hatred of the gamekeeper, and the deep prejudices of the class system. This hatred builds to a devastating climax! Robin Jenkins’ greatest novel is brought to life by the creative team behind HMT’s two critically acclaimed productions, Sunset Song and The Silver Darlings.

‘THE FUNNIEST SHOW IN THE WESTERN WORLD.’ DAILY MAIL

The National Theatre’s smash-hit comedy, now a West End and Broadway sensation, comes to Glasgow. Richard Bean’s award-winning play is a glorious celebration of British comedy: a unique, laugh-out-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners. Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe but Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers. To prevent discovery Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple.
