Allison recently completed her Bachelor of Applied Design in Interior Design at LaSalle College Vancouver (March 2021). Allison’s design approach focuses on holistic, integrative and user-friendly elements. She appreciates how a well designed space can unduly influence an individual’s experience. She enjoys working on designs that create unique concepts, offer simple solutions, an elegant atmosphere and firmly believes in quality over quantity. Although intrigued by many different design styles, Allison is particularly drawn to hospitality design which is often on a grand scale and facilitates human interaction. Allison’s goal is to utilize her background in art and design to bring the client’s vision of their perfect interior to life.

INTERIOR CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES As diversity is the main concept behind the Minami restaurant, the use of different materials and shapes within the space to create unique areas was the first concept to come to mind. The main focal point that brings the space together is the open pass kitchen area from the main dining room. Floor to ceiling marble was the base material chosen to work with in this area in order to create a bold and luxurious first impression when entering the space. The marble also
acts as a visual guide, directing guests attention to the open pass kitchen, where the chefs have a stage to perform on. The marble surrounds the open pass kitchen adding to the interactive dining experience for the guests. Eclectic touches in the light fixtures and wall paper in the private dining area add variety, giving guests a option of different types of atmospheres they would like to experience while dining in the space.

COLOR PALETTE AND MATERIAL BOARD The materials and finishes within Minami restaurant have a neutral color palette throughout the space in order to create a sense of tranquility and uniformity. The only material that adds a pop of color is the dark green marble. This material is utilized as it exudes a sensuous and luxurious atmosphere. The light herringbone wood floor is interspersed between beige stone tiles in order to create contrast between the different dining spaces. Dark stone tile is utilized on
the patio as it a more durable material and is less prone to stains. Light gray stone is utilized as the counter top in the bar area for functionality and aesthetic value. This design choice allows the customers food and drinks to be easily visible. Gold and rose gold highlights are seen in the light fixtures, handles and decorative metal wall dividers to add a playful atmosphere.

DESIGN CONCEPT KEYWORDS: MINIMALISM, TIMELESS, ZEN, ASSIMILATION, CLEAN, RARE The Row utilizes their storefronts for those galleries to expose their artists and designers. A minimalist style is therefore reflected in the design and architecture of each of The Row’s retail spaces. All of their retail spaces share a similar minimalist aesthetic, with a twist representing the city where the retail space is located. For the Vancouver storefront the main concept is reflecting the British Columbian culture through the use of natural local materials and indigenous artworks. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODES

INTERIOR CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES As minimalism is the concept behind this space, it was thought to create functional design elements that were clean and did not have a bold presence in the materials. The goal is to have the focus on the products in the space. Therefore, the shelving and display areas utilize glass, black metal and wood throughout the space. It was decided the only area that could have more diversity while still remaining with
a neutral color palette is the cafe. In the cafe a plant wall was also a design feature incorporated to promote environmentalism, which is an important aspect that British Columbia is known for. This design style also follows suit with the other The Row retail stores, making it easy to discern for clients who are looking for that distinct look and feel to their shopping experience.

TROPICAL HOUSE SWITENIA MUSIC RETREAT DESIGN
51
Photo 13
OBJECTIVE The objective of the music retreat center complex is to promote musical creativity by providing an area where local and international musicians can create, grow and expand their musical careers. When designing the complex, designers must take into consideration that Monserrat has a tropical climate. As such, the materials need to fit this tropical climate and the local cultural style so as to not disturb the residents on the island. The local culture of Montserrat is an interesting mix of cultures as the island is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Montserrat is part of the Lesser Antilles chain and is known as the “Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, in part because of its formerly large population of people who originated from Ireland” (Patullo).
52
Not only are there European influences in Montserrat but there are African and North American populations as well. With this diversity in the demographic population of Montserrat, a unique culture has developed (Nessy).
INTRODUCTION
Photo 12
TROPICAL HOUSE : SWITENIA MUSIC RETREAT DESIGN For Senior Project 1 & 2, the project assigned was to create a music retreat center located on the Caribbean Island of Montserrat. The Island of Montserrat previously was the home to the music studio ‘Associated Independent Recording’ (AIR). AIR music studio was the “epicenter of the international music scene where musicians like Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney used to record their albums” (Uni). The music produced at AIR created a communal experience between the locals and artists. It was where over sixty albums were recorded by legendary musicians (Nessy). Devastatingly, in 1995, the Soufriere Hills Volcano in Montserrat erupted. This volcano led to evacuation of the island and specifically, where the AIR music studio was located, is now labeled as an
exclusion zone. Today, the music studio is still abandoned and is engulfed by vegetation. Twenty years later the Island of Monserrat’s economy and landscape has been revived since the Soufriere Hills volcanic eruption. As a result, the inhabitants and the government are seeking to design a new music studio space that holds the same prestige as the AIR music studio. This new music retreat center is part of the design competition entitled, ‘Tropical House’. The winner of the competition will be awarded a $20,000.00 grant towards building their music retreat center (Uni).

SITE: MONTSERRAT ISLAND The design site for the new music retreat center complex will be situated in the Woodlands area on the island (Photo 14), which is surrounded by the native trees called Tabebouia and the endangered species Swietenia. Within the Woodlands area are residential units and undeveloped lots owned by locals and expatriates. This area in particular needs reviving. Part of this area is located on one of the most beautiful beaches on the Island of Montserrat, and therefore has stunning ocean views. The total area of land where the new music retreat center is
located on is 33,700.72 sqm. The music retreat center will make up 14,000 sqm of the total area. The closed performance and the accommodation areas were chosen to be designed. The closed performance area is an enclosed space, similar to a theatre. This space makes up 12.5% of the complex. This is 1750 sqm out of the 14,000 sqm area. The accommodation areas make up 40% of the 14,000 sqm area (5600 sqm). There are two family accommodation areas that are each 1400 sqm and four couple accommodation areas that are each 700 sqm (Uni).

It is also more private closer to the beach as the local residents of Montserrat are able to access the areas located near the entrance of the complex.
This way the music residents are not disturbed during their stay at the music retreat center and it is quieter and more secluded closer to the beach. The closed performance area is located in the middle of the complex in order to create a central area easily accessible for both the music residents and public.

DESIGN CONCEPT The design of the closed performance space is to create connections between the audience and the performer. The design will give visitors a feeling of inclusion, togetherness and unity, like a safe zone that is harmonic, and peaceful. Users will be immersed within the design in order to have transportative experiences, drawing humanity closer together and creating memorable connections. The design interplays contradictions: intimacy and monumentality, stillness and movement. The shape of the design has circular and dome forms that are based off of the florals of Montserrat, how fragile yet strong they are.

4. Main theatre and bar area interior sketches of closed performance space.
EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES Different forms of roof designs was the first concept that came to mind due to the topography of the site on the Island of Montserrat. Montserrat’s terrain is not flat; it is made up of mountains and volcanoes. The different levels of roofs represent the mountains on the islands. The circular shapes utilized within the space represent unity and aim to bring the community closer together. This way the design capitalizes on the view of Montserrat. 62
There is also a dome roof made of wood over top of the main theatre. On the dome ceiling recessed lights have been designed to represent stars. This feature is to bring the visitors closer to nature and to instill a sense of spirituality within the space. A minimalist approach has been taken throughout the interiors to ensure tranquility.

COLOR PALETTE AND MATERIAL BOARD Materials utilized throughout the exterior and interior of the Swietenia closed performance space highlight the surrounding Montserrat environment. Highlights of local materials are utilized throughout the space including wood, stone, concrete and volcanic rock. Local wood is utilized throughout the design of the space to promote the local economy. Different shades of green are utilized in the materials to represent the tropical plants on the island.
Beige and white color tones are the other colors utilized throughout the space. The beige is utilized as it is a neutral color bringing calm throughout the space. White is utilized to brighten the space and to motivate the music residents to get their work done while at the music retreat center.
63
The closed performance space is on one floor to comfortably move the musical instruments and equipment in and out of the space efficiently. The space is created in a circular formation with the key areas surrounding the main theatre space. There are two entries; a general public entry located near the reception area of the music retreat complex and a staff entry located closer to the studio spaces. The general public entrance will be open and airy with high ceilings and floor to ceiling height glass windows to give visitors a sense of grandeur. Here visitors can easily access the main theatre space which is directly following the entrance in the center of the space. Before entering the main theatre space on the left side of the entrance is a

bar and seating area for visitors to relax and socialize before or after performances. On the right side there is an instrument rental room along with a record library for music residents and for the general public to utilize. The theatre space is in the shape of circle to give visitors a sense of inclusion and to represent the florals of Montserrat. The roof is in a dome like shape to create good acoustics for the musical performances and to aesthetically resemble a starry night. Following the public spaces is a staff area, storage and dressing rooms for music residents in the back of the building. This area will be only for music residents and staff to utilize. Here there will also be a lounge area for the musicians to enjoy before and after their performances.

The center will not only be for the people living in Montserrat but also for global citizens. The need for a new music center is paramount to the island, as the local culture has a large community of artists and musicians (Nessy). The music program provided by the space will give more possibilities locally and globally for individuals

EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES Different forms of stair designs was the first concept that came to mind due to the topography of the site on the Island of Montserrat. Montserrat’s terrain is not flat; it is made up of volcanic mountains. The stairs represent a stream flowing down between the mountains. The mountains are the areas on each side of the stairs. From there curves were introduced into the design to reflect the forms of musical instruments, specifically the curves seen on a guitar.
Several glass windows are located throughout the accommodation spaces. The design focuses on capitalizing and enjoying the views of Montserrat from the accommodation spaces. A minimalist approach has been taken throughout the interiors to ensure that the music residents minds do not become cluttered. So the residents can return to their accommodation feeling relaxed after a work day at the rehearsal studio. 83

FLOOR PLANS The floor plans for both the family and couple accommodations have a similar layout. The differences between the accommodations is that the couples accommodation is smaller and has one less bedroom. The floor plans have been designed to work around the staircase and water feature focal points in the middle of the floor plan layout. For the family accommodation the left side is dedicated to the bedrooms which are the private areas in the complex. The right side of the accommodation building is for the public areas. This way it gives these areas separation, which allows for the bedroom area to be a quieter space then the public areas.

ELEVATIONS, SECTIONS AND RENDERS The exterior design of the family accommodation includes columns that are in tree formations. This formation is to reflect the abundance of tropical trees in Montserrat. The columns are left in their natural wood state to highlight the local fauna and location of the building. Floor to ceiling glass windows are utilized throughout the space in order to maximize the view for the music residents. Green marble is incorporated
where the stairs and water fountain feature is in order to blend the building in with the surrounding natural environment. The building utilizes white concrete in order to keep the building cool so that it does not absorb too much sunlight, as Montserrat has a tropical climate and is very warm. Wood planks are placed underneath the roof on the exterior of the building to create a natural aesthetic.
