The Specialized Training Program is for gifted high school students who want to explore interdisciplinary knowledge in an intimate college learning environment. Students in this selective three-week residential program gather to challenge themselves and build relationships with peers that will last a lifetime. Small class sizes and a customized curriculum approach ensure the optimal learning environment, with in-depth study of the topics and research that define 21st century knowledge. The program engages a select number of talented students from across Wisconsin, the nation, and the world in the research-based expertise of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

COURSES & LECTURES

INTRODUCTION TO CRITICAL REASONING Examine arguments from both popular media and the great philosophers. ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY Examine the variety of approaches used by psychologists in the treatment of personality and behavioral disorders. THE HUMAN BODY & DISEASE Probe the nature of disease with new understandings about genetics, pathology, and epidemiology. MOLECULAR BIOLOGY Understand the fundamentals and tools of molecular biology from discussion of cells, genomes, and cell chemistry to DNA, cellular organization, function and cell immunity. PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE Explore the history behind modern Physics, and share stories of the triumphs and tragedies befalling many of the pioneers of modern science.

COMPUTER SCIENCE Study data structures, algorithms, digital structures, and other key programming concepts from real-world examples such as Google and Netflix. INTERNATIONAL LAW & POLICY Examine the relationships of the major players within the infrastructure of the global legal system. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT Explore the concepts of intellectual property, patents, trademarks, and copyrights, and cover important early steps in the patent process.

THEATRE: ACTING & PLAYWRITING Delve into some fascinating times in theatrical history and learn the art of playwriting and directing. STATISTICS: PRECISION, PREDICTION & TRUTH Starts with fundamentals of collecting and presenting data and weaves its way through the concepts of central tendency, probability, normal distribution, correlation, and regression analysis.

ACTIVITIES & TRIPS DAILY ACTIVITIES Daytime activities include crafts, sports, tours of numerous museums established by UW’s academic departments (including zoology, geology, art, engineering and physics), and trips to the famous Wisconsin Union and State Street.

EXTENDED TRIPS Over the second weekend of camp, students are able to participate in an extended trip out of Madison with supervising adults. In 2012 and 2013, the students toured Chicago. During the 2014 summer, the students have the opportunity to spend a day in the Wisconsin Dells.
