I have experience working in groups in both the academic and professional setting and feel confident in my leadership and problem solving abilities. I have had the pleasure of working the past four summers for two great architecture firms where I was able to enhance my design skills and also five semesters assisting professors through research and teaching.

COALESCE is a 33 story, net zero energy, class A office highrise located in the financial district of Uptown Charlotte that was designed with one partner for our Comprehensive Design Studio. This project addresses two larger issues that Uptown Charlotte faces; the lack of public softscape and lack of access to technology products by its residents. COALESCE is composed of 11 modules, each consisting of three floors, and two wings that pivot about an axis to cause unique intersections at each module. These spaces are where the public and private sectors of Charlotte integrate and is where our interactive technology libraries are located. Our site’s softscape draw visitors in which then transitions them vertically through the heart of the tower while giving them access to various products and services from tech companies who occupy the outer portions of the same floor, readily available to collaborate.

PHENOM SCHOOL UNC CHARLOTTE TERM SPRING 2019 PROFESSOR ERIC SAUDA PHENOM is a semester long study focused on the idea of how we as humans interact with and experience various aspects of architecture through our senses. After researching the concept of phenomenology and a rigorous case study compilation, I was able to understand how to engage certain senses and provoke how we perceive a particular atmosphere of a space through its physical characteristics. This process provided a solid foundation to design my own space that demands to be experienced in the flesh in order to fully grasp its true meaning. This led me to design solely from perspectives instead of typical plan/ section so I was always “in” the space. The outcome was seven unique perspectile views that the occupant would experience throughout their journey of this designed atmosphere. The space is designed to unfold the further along you travel, each viewpoint revealing more of what’s to come.

START-UP SCHOOL UNC CHARLOTTE TERM FALL 2018 PROFESSOR JEFFERSON ELLINGER START-UP is an indoor/outdoor go-kart track and business incubator that is designed to liven up the South End area of Charlotte while connecting the people of this neighborhood, along with the greater Charlotte/Mecklenburg area, with local startup companies. This offers these small companies access to shop spaces, working modules, and meeting rooms to help propel their business in the right direction. These two programs mesh well because racing go-karts is an easy way to relax and have fun for all, while also bringing out a competitive nature and boosting team morale. The track and incubator paths interweave throughout the entire structure while sharing common ground at various points and levels. This way, the two programs act independently yet coexist without the need to fight for space. The combination of these two programs create an ambitious atmosphere that will bring out the best in everyone.

BI-FOLD SCHOOL UNC CHARLOTTE TERM SPRING 2018 PROFESSOR CATTY ZHANG BI-FOLD is an event pavilion located on N. Davidson Street in NoDa, Charlotte’s art district, that explores direct v. indirect light to create unique moments for the users. Abstracting and modeling a natural pattern was developed numerous times before a structure was formed. The form of bifold consist of two paths, one exposed and one partially enclosed which get filtered into the main gathering space towards the back of the site which is also partially enclosed. The open path contains a softscape within which expresses its natural environment that the direct light then further enhances. The enclosed path deals with more indirect light by creating reflections from the angled panels which bounces light around the interior and casts unique shadows on the ground. When the sun rises, the panels block the sun from entering, giving priority to the direct path, however, when the sun sets, that’s when the art of light takes place.

iBRARY SCHOOL UNC CHARLOTTE TERM SPRING 2018 PROFESSOR CATTY ZHANG iBRARY is an internet driven, automated “library of the future that is thought to be built in the year 2050 and is located directly beneath the Brooklyn Bridge in Dumbo, New York. The idea of how libraries will be utilized during this time was a crucial step in order to make a compelling argument as to how and why it would work. Since the Information Age has made everything from online shopping to demand-responsive transportation so accessible and convenient, why not take this same approach and apply it to a library? iBRARY addresses this idea by operating on an automated storage and retrieval system which then transfers the item to a delivery drone to then transport to its specific destination. Bifold is less about an occupiable space and more about an information database that gives everyone unlimited access in the time of instant gratification.

OURSPACE SCHOOL UNC CHARLOTTE TERM FALL 2017 PROFESSOR THOMAS FORGET OURSPACE is a spatial juxtaposition between two volumes of a house in Belmont, Charlotte. This idea of the contrasting relationship between volumes was to serve as the client in that it wasn’t until the end of the project where it was clear who would occupy the house. One volume was embedded in the ground which was minimally designed consisting of one heavily articulated wall that divided the space in two that housed the bathroom amenities and closets. This led to two separate but equal spaces that had no way of reaching the other side. The other volume was suspended directly above and articulated to a high degree with no use of interior walls. “Rooms” were inset within the floor and the doors to the lower volume were horizontal to create vertical thresholds. In the end, it was decided that the occupants would be a couple who loves each other, but not really.

WCFM SCHOOL APPALACHIAN STATE TERM SPRING 2017 PROFESSOR D. JASON MILLER The Watauga County Farmers Market was a collaborative project between my capstone studio class of five students and the board at the farmers market. We met with the board throughout the twelve week process to discuss a new design for the market since they were currently operating from a parking lot with very little vehicular circulation and shelter which limited the times the market was able to be running. The market also didn’t have a conditioned space for meetings which forced the board to operate at a different location about fifteen minutes away. The final design consisted of two covered pavilions with easy to access parking for each vendor, an “out” building that included restrooms, managers office/meeting area, and storage. The market was moved out of the parking lot to allow for more visitors and increase the walkability between vendors.
