Due to the success of our Refer a Friend scheme for vacant posts, we are now revising the scheme rewards.
If you would like to contribute to YOUR staff newsletter, please email me: sue.hole@aster.co.uk and attach a photo
We started this some years ago and after a recent review will be increasing the financial incentives. From 1st August 2022 the employment stage sum will increase from £50 to £100 and the successful completion of the 6 month review stage sum will increase from £75 to £100. We recognise the benefits of colleagues recommending East Boro as a place to work. Many colleagues have joined us via the Refer a Friend scheme and we hope that many more will in the future, because of this scheme and we feel this is the right time to promote this scheme further and recognise colleagues for referring a friend with a more appropriate reward scheme. This will start from the 1st August 2022
Note to Managers Our very own ER Staff Newsletter is the perfect place to thank staff by mentioning their efforts to gain qualifications or give them a well earned pat on the back for going above and beyond in the workplace. They played recently in mid Wales against Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Jersey. England won in the final against Ireland. Our East Boro colleague Bridget together with Julie and Penny, qualified to play for England by becoming the 2019 Bowls England Ladies Triples winners. You normally then play in the British Isles Tournament the following year representing England but this was delayed until 2022 due to covid. All three Ladies play for Dorset and play out of the Poole Park Bowling Club.

East Boro’s Mighty Hikers in training As mentioned in last month’s Newsletter, Cara Lewis and Kelly Baker are taking part in this year’s Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support. They will be walking 26 miles along the beautiful but very hilly Jurassic Coastline starting from Weymouth. Training has been going well but in the current heatwave is a little uncomfortable! However, our commitment to the cause pushes us on. We have adapted our training slightly due to the heatwave by starting earlier in the mornings and avoiding being out in the midday/afternoon sun. We plan to pick up the pace at the end of July when temperatures are dropping back to the mid 20s. We will be walking early in the mornings before work in Wimborne and the surrounding areas and the out on the Jurassic Coast at weekends to face those hills! On our most recent long distance walk we managed 15 miles in 27 degrees! It was hot! Our legs ached, Kelly got stung on the leg and Cara spent 5 minutes wondering why her water pack wasn’t working, she hadn’t opened the valve! Despite all that we had fun, encouraged each other when it started to get tough, and rewarded ourselves with an iced coffee and pastries at the end! FIVE items you should never leave in your car in hot weather As the weather is getting much warmer, many of us will we travelling to and from work or between appointments. It’s very easy to forget to bring everything inside when you’ve parked your car, particularly when your mind is on work. We all know that cars heat up quickly, but you might not have thought about the potential risks of leaving everyday items in your car. Here is everything that you shouldn’t leave in your vehicle during the hot weather: Bottled water It’s easy to accidentally leave bottled water in your car, but you should think twice before leaving the plastic bottles out in the heat. As the temperature rises, chemicals from the plastic bottle can leak into the water, making it less safe for you when you come to drink it. Plastic bottles can also magnify sunlight enough to start a fire, putting your vehicle at risk. To be on the safe side, it’s best to bring the water inside with you and store it in the fridge, to prevent the heat from affecting it. Batteries Avoid leaving batteries in your car when it’s hot. Small and easy to forget about or lose track of, batteries can rupture or leak acid if left in high temperatures for a long time. Battery manufacturers do not recommend leaving their products out in the heat for this reason. Battery acid is corrosive, and is dangerous if inhaled, so if you do come back to your car to find an exploded battery, make sure to get it cleaned as soon as possible. Even if the battery doesn’t leak, it can also lose capacity after being left in your car. Electronic devices Always take your phone and any other electronic devices out of your car if you’re going to be leaving it for any length of time. Lots of phones have a safe temperature window that they can operate within. Many phones also show you a warning when they
5
begin to overheat, so when you see this you should move them to somewhere cooler. Other electronic devices should also be kept out of hot vehicles. The heat might cause damage to the batteries or any plastic casing, or overheat them so that the operating system doesn’t work correctly. Sunscreen If you leave it in your vehicle too long, you might come back to find it smelling quite strange, and in extreme heat, the cap of the bottle may have opened due to pressure. Sunscreen that has been left out in the heat tends to become unusable as it congeals due to the temperature. It’s advisable to treat it like expired sunscreen and replace it. Aerosol cans Like phones, many aerosol products that you buy will come with a recommended temperature, and a note about not using or storing them over the recommended maximum temperature. This recommendation is made by the manufacturer because these highly pressurised products are sensitive to heat. If the temperature around them is outside of their ideal window, the contents of the can will expand with risk of exploding and causing damage to your car. At the very least, you’ll have to spend time cleaning up after the explosion, so it’s worth remembering to take these products inside with you to find a cooler storage spot.
