“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the only Monarch many of us will have known in our lives and she was our constant in an ever-changing world. As our Queen she was an inspirational Leader with a sense of duty and commitment that was beyond comparison.

Colleagues at East Boro, like millions around the world, mourn her loss and say thank you for 70 years of dedicated service to our Country and the Commonwealth. Rest in Peace your Majesty. God Save the King.”

The Mighty Hikers

On the Evening of Thursday 8 September Cara and Kelly received an email from MacMillan advising that the Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike on 10 September has been cancelled following the death of Her Majesty The Queen. Their places will be deferred to the 2023 Mighty Hike event, as will the sponsorship, and they eagerly await the new date.

Cara said: It was really disappointing the Hike was cancelled but I understand and appreciate MacMillan’s reasons. Some participants decided to undertake the challenge anyway but I decided not to. I felt I would put myself & others at risk without the official water/fuel stops, Marshalls along the route, and other support they provide such as medical help. Especially after the rain and potential damage to the paths and cliffs which will not have had their final checks completed on Friday 9 September by the organisers. Some of the route was also on Private Land which would not have been accessible following cancellation of the event. I want to complete the exact route, the full 26 miles and those huge hills! I WILL complete the challenge in memory of my Mom albeit a year later than planned, and will use this time to raise even more money for such a worthy cause.

Kelly said: Although my place is being transferred to the 2023 event I still wanted to walk on Saturday in memory of loved ones and to complete the challenge I set myself. To reduce the risk, I changed the route and my sister and I, pictured right, set off early Saturday morning. Unfortunately I miscalculated the route but rather than being less than 26 miles, it was over 27 miles! Although there wasn’t the atmosphere the official Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike would have had, I had a great time, pushed myself and achieved my goal. It was great practice for next year’s official event, although I don’t think I will be training for the next couple of weeks as to say I am aching after Saturday is an understatement!

East Boro Colleague Awards 2022

May I take this opportunity to congratulate our four winners of the East Boro Colleague Awards 2022. They are as follows: Fran Antell, Team Player of the Year; Barbora Brown, Leader of the Year; Joe Eyre, Care & Support Worker of the Year; and Bianca Jones, Colleague of the Year.

As you know this year’s awards were slightly different as it was staff colleagues that both nominated and voted for the winners. When I received the list of winners, chosen by colleagues, I was pleased to have the opportunity to call each one myself with the result as I personally feel your award is greatly deserved.

As well as each of the winners being given £150 of Perkbox vouchers, later this year all winners will be invited to join myself, former Chair Eileen Hayward, and current East Boro Chair, Richard Teather, for an evening meal to celebrate their achievement.

COOKING... ON A BOOTSTRAP

The cost of living is rising at an alarming rate and we all need inspiration to cook on a budget. There are several websites on the internet to inspire and advise, but none better than https://cookingonabootstrap.com/

Jack Monroe is the best-selling author of ‘A Girl Called Jack’ and ‘Cooking on a Bootstrap’. She prices ingredients and compiles delicious and inventive recipes you can make at home.

Here I have opted to share a 20p per portion soup recipe - as it’s now getting cold. On the website you can find other recipes - costed to suit. Enter your email address to subscribe to Jack’s blog and receive notifications of new posts by email, so you never miss out.

Simple Tomato & Bean Soup

[VG/V/DF/GF] Serves 4 at 20p each

This simple staple started off as a tin of baked beans, thoroughly rinsed, plus a carton of chopped tomatoes – out of which I made a hearty, filling soup suitable for lunch or a light supper.

I’ve jazzed it up a bit since then!

And don’t be scared of rinsing baked beans, they are normally just haricot or borlotti or cannelloni beans slathered in ‘that’ bright orange tomato sauce, and the value range versions are much cheaper than their plain counterparts.

1 medium onion, 7p (59p/1kg, Farm Stores at Asda)

2 cloves of garlic, 4p (60p/three bulbs, Growers Selection at Asda)

1 carrot, 9p (avg. price one loose carrot, Growers Selection at Asda)

500ml stock made with 1 stock cube and water, 3p (39p/12, Asda)

1 x 400g tin of beans, 25p (23p/420g, Smart Price at Asda)

1 tsp thyme, 4p (37p/18g, Asda)

1 x 400g carton or tin of chopped tomatoes, 30p (KTC at Asda)

• Peel and chop the onion, peel and finely chop the garlic, wash and chop the carrot. Put them all into a saucepan and cover with the stock.

• Drain and rinse the tinned beans, then throw them into the pan.

• Add the herbs and the chopped tomatoes, then simmer for 30 minutes until the veg are soft.

• This soup can be served chunky – by tipping half into a blender, pulsing and mixing the purée back in with the chunky half in the pan – or smooth, by pulsing the lot in a blender.

Strange... but true

• Humans have stripes on our bodies, called Blaschkos Lines, which are invisible to the naked eye. Cats, however, can see them. Amazing!

• Watching a 90 minute scary film can burn up to 113 calories which is the same as a 90 minute walk. I think I’ll take the walk!

• In 2008, Finnish police found a dead mosquito in a stolen car. They tested the blood from the mosquito and so apprehended the car thief.

• All people with blue eyes share a common ancestor who lived between 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. Before then, all humans had brown eyes

• ‘Never odd or even’ spelled backwards is still ‘Never odd or even’.

Globally, more than a third of food is wasted - and that’s bad news for our planet. Food waste is responsible for 10% of greenhouse gases, and we use a landmass the size of China to produce food we end up throwing away. It makes no sense, right?

At Too Good To Go, are determined to help fix the problem. Our anti-food waste app lets you rescue delicious, unsold food from businesses to save it from going to waste. In turn, the app powers our efforts to build an anti-food waste movement.

Their Mission is to make sure good food gets eaten, not wasted.

Every day, delicious, fresh food goes to waste at cafes, restaurants, hotels, shops and manufacturers - just because it hasn’t sold in time. The Too Good To Go app lets customers buy and collect Magic Bags of this food - at a great price - directly from businesses.

The Too Good To Go team works within organisations like local government and schools to shake up the food system and change the way we think about throwing away food.

Gardening jobs for October

October is here and the temperature will start dropping as the month goes on. Below are some tips for gardeners for October on how to help your garden survive autumn and winter.

Use your collected autumn leaves in your compost. Tidy up borders for winter and then mulch with bark chips, well rotted manure or leaf mould to insulate plant roots for the winter. Cut, rake, aerate and fertilize your lawn ready for next year.

Protect sensitive plants from frost at night and plant out any perennials or biennials you’ve grown from seed this year. Start to plant tulips in pots and borders. Clean out your bird boxes.
