In 2012 they were supplemented, at the end of a complex restoration performed by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, by the famous Gates of Paradise, while the choice was made to recover in the museum also the other two doors of the Baptistry, still to be restored. The new museum architecture therefore set the difficult task of containing and enhancing works symbolic of the whole of Renaissance art, with the prohibitive desire to reconstruct a full-size model of the old façade of the Duomo, dismantled in 1587, to reposition the fourteenth and fifteenth-century statues in their original locations. In this museum intervention, the design of the architecture and the installation of the works were carried out in a unitary and almost inextricable operation, given the Principal’s desire to entrust to the same group of architects the different project interventions, starting with the general building renovation and moving on to the most minute details of the installation. Based upon the grandiose museum project prepared by Monsignor Timothy Verdon, it was thus possible to rework the entire configuration of the museum and its parts, thanks also to the contribution of top specialists in disciplines linked to construction and exhibition.
