Board AAC Profile

Sandra Cawyer

My favorite meal: Cheeseburgers and fries, but I try really hard not to eat them.

Office: Columbia County Assessor

County I was born in: Columbia County When I’m not working I’m: Spending time with family and working around my home.

What I like most about my county:

Columbia County is a community that takes pride in the way it is presented. We have many volunteer organizations that work for persons in need and also work to clean, repair and landscape the main streets of our town. There is a very active arts community. We are the home of Southern Arkansas University and Logoly State Park. Our county hosts two big festivals — Sandra Cawyer, Columbia County

Magnolia Blossom Festival and Purple Hull Pea Festival — which have earned state and national attention.

The accomplishments of which I am most proud: My children. I was a single mom for part of their childhood and constantly worried whether I was giving them everything they needed. All three children are happy and productive adults. They have great lives and great careers.

The hardest thing I have ever done is: Step into the public eye. When I decided to run for assessor, I had to learn to be comfortable with public speaking and participating in conversations with people that I did not know.

The best thing about living in Arkansas: This state is beautiful, and if you are a summer person like me you can’t beat the winters in South Arkansas.

I got started in county government because: I had always worked in the corporate world but was looking for a change and received an offer to work in the assessor’s office. It only took a few months, and I knew that I wanted county government to be my life’s career. If I wasn’t a county assessor, I’d be: I would definitely work in the real estate/appraiser business. I have held a real estate license and also worked for a title company.

You might be surprised to learn that: I love to do flower arrangements. I have designed and created the flowers for several weddings.

My pet peeve is: Having to wait on someone because they are late.

We want your

Did any of your county officials or staff get an award, appointment or pat on the back? Please let us know about it for the next edition of County Lines magazine. You can write up a couple of paragraphs about it, or if something ran in your local paper, call and ask them to forward the story to us. We encourage you or your newspaper to attach a good quality photo, too: e-mail csmith@arcounties.org.

Golf tournament raises more than $4,000 for scholarship

Thirty-two golfers teed off at Oakridge Golf Course in Huntsville on Aug. 4 to raise funds for the Randy Kemp Memorial Scholarship. Kemp was the Association of Arkansas Counties’ first communications director. He joined AAC in 2008 after a successful career in newspapers. He died in a motorcycle accident in August 2011.

The Randy Kemp Memorial Scholarship aims to raise funds for scholarships for descendents of county officials or employees who intend to pursue a college degree in communications.

The 2015 Randy Kemp Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Katherine Kemp, the granddaughter of deceased Independence County Justice of the Peace James Kemp. Katherine, a 2014 graduate of Conway High School and a 2014 recipient of the scholarship, is the great-niece of the scholarship’s namesake. She is pursuing a degree in mass communications at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia.

AAC appreciates all who support the fund and the golfers who participated.
