MERMARELLA Indigo Moon Theatre

THE COMPANY

THE SHOW

Founded by Anna Ingleby and Haviel Perdana, Hull-based Indigo Moon Theatre has been producing highly visual puppet theatre with a global flavour, touring nationally and internationally since 2001.

From one of its earliest beginnings in ancient Egypt, a story best known across the globe as Cinderella shape-shifts its common threads into the world of the seas. Linking nations, hosting both travelling ships above and a wealth of secret sea creatures below.

They promote meaningful expression and open up new worlds, either through their subject matter, their puppets, or through inventive use of simple techniques to inspire others. They seek opportunities within shows to appeal at different levels to different ages, and, in keeping with tradition, to communicate as well as entertain. Avoiding the “pink and fluffy”, Indigo Moon prefer to challenge, to stimulate critical thinking, and to promote tolerance. Touring has taken them as far as Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Germany, where in 2015 they were the only UK company to perform at the triennial international Shadow Theatre Festival. They were shadow theatre consultants for Take That’s 2015 Arena Tour, and have also appeared on TV in Peaky Blinders. Currently, Indigo Moon Theatre Indonesia is being created alongside Indigo Moon Theatre UK, with Mermarella the first production to include local younger team members Frances Allison, Rachel Harris and Zoe Hughes.

Cinderella is not the same creature as those she serves, who envy her gifts. They dwell not far from where the green waters of the Nile flow into the blue waters of the Mediterranean. She craves for life above water – but will she overcome all obstacles, and at what cost? Threads from other tales weave their way into this well-known story. Can she survive the treacherous journey to the fairy sea witch, and why is it so difficult to achieve her dream? Is it really worth the price, will she ever really be accepted, or should she have just accepted her old life? Puppetry, shadow theatre and acting bring these comic twisting tails to their modern day outcome, aimed at thinking families and the young at heart of all ages. Mentor: Nick Barnes
