DESIGN CHICAGO THE MAGAZINE OF DESIGN CENTER AND LUXEHOME AT theMART

W

e are excited to bring you the second issue of DESIGN CHICAGO, The Magazine of Design Center and LuxeHome at theMART. We are so pleased to present this compelling magazine, filled with design inspiration from our showrooms and the designers who frequent them. In this issue, we showcased textiles, wallcoverings, and materials that celebrate maximalism at its finest, and we visited homes that span the design gamut from vivid to neutral, from Victorian to industrial chic. We visited some public spaces that inspire our dreams of travel to faraway places, even though we may be sticking close to home for the time being. In our portfolio of private rooms, we peeked into the spaces where we find refuge, especially during trying times. And of course, our Gallery pages are filled with the newest in appliances, fixtures for kitchens and baths, fabrics, lighting, and accessories.

theMART is located at 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza Chicago, IL 60654 Phone: 800.677.MART

theMART continues to be the ultimate resource for the design community and their clients, and we hope that this new magazine will inspire, delight, and inform in every issue. And of course, our redesigned directory will appear in the second half of the magazine, and as always will feature our showrooms. We hope you enjoy reading DESIGN CHICAGO, The Magazine of Design Center and LuxeHome at theMART, as much as we enjoyed creating it. n

HOLDING FROM JUNGLES TO GEOMETRY, MAXIMALISM TAKES OVER. BY D E B O R A H L . M A R T IN

W

illiam Morris, the British Arts and Crafts artist, textile designer, novelist, and social activist who was famous for his botanical prints for wallpaper and fabrics said, “If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Morris would have been pleased with the portfolio of beautiful, exuberant, and elegant patterns on these pages, because they are both beautiful and useful. From grisaille botanicals to creatures hiding in the jungle, from subtle geometrics to stripes and florals, pattern can add a pop of color and visual interest to even a minimalist interior. It can be used to direct the eye to a focal point in the room, or to camouflage an unfortunate feature. Pattern can help define a space, add drama, or add energy. It can also help define a room’s style by bringing in elements that are found throughout the decor, such as line, shape, texture, or color. It can be the tool that brings all the disparate pieces together—furniture, window treatments, pillows, rugs—to form a cohesive whole. The key to using pattern successfully is to find the right balance. The legendary designer Mario Buatta—known as The Prince of Chintz—was a master at blending pattern and color to create beautiful rooms. He was a maximalist who favored English country house style, and the explosion of florals blended with stripes, animal prints, and solids in his rooms felt layered and comfortable rather than headache-inducing. Scale, color, and texture are the keys to successful use of pattern in interior design. Finding a single throughline that ties all of the choices together and tells a story will make your rooms feel ‘put together’ rather than chaotic. n 38

Sheila Bridges created Harlem Toile because her perfect toile didn’t exist.

SHEILA BRIDGES X S.HARRIS Fabricut will offer Sheila Bridges’ Harlem Toile de Jouy wallcovering, providing trade access to the esteemed pattern for the first time. The wallpaper, which comes in 10 different colorways (nine hand screened and one digital), has been featured in many museums and exhibits throughout the country and Europe including The Studio Museum In Harlem, the Museum of Art and Design in New York City, The Underground Museum in LA, and The Musee De La Toile De Jouy in Jouy en Josas, France. The wallpaper is also included in the permanent wallpaper collection of The Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York City and most recently, The Smithsonian National Museum of African American Culture and History in Washington, DC. Says Bridges, “As an African American living in Harlem, I have always been intrigued and inspired by the historical narrative of the decorative arts, especially traditional French toile with its pastoral motifs from the late 1700’s. I’m entertained by the stories these patterns tell and the questions they often raise. But after searching for many years for the perfect toile for my own home, I decided that it quite simply didn’t exist. I created Harlem Toile initially as a wallcovering then expanded the collection to include fabrics, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, clothing, and Moroccan babouches . My original design, which lampoons some of the stereotypes commonly associated with African Americans, ultimately celebrates our complex history and rich culture (which has often been appropriated).” 44

VICTORIA HAGAN X THE SHADE STORE Interior Designer Victoria Hagan has collaborated with The Shade Store to create a specially designed collection of versatile fabrics that reflect her celebrated sense of restrained luxury. Taking its cues from one of Victoria’s favorite signatures—a curated palette influenced by nature—the assortment features warm earth tones and cool blues and greys in a variety of designs inspired by memorable landscapes. From the billowing effect of a soft breeze on a lazy afternoon and the reflections of the sun on an open field, to the churning of the ocean on a beautiful summer day, the collection seems simultaneously both simple and sophisticated. “What I love about the collection is its versatility,” added Hagan. “It’s fashion for the home. You can mix and match and dress it up or down. As a designer, I derive great pleasure from seeing how people incorporate my designs into their own interiors to create homes uniquely their own. The possibilities are endless and the process is relatively fool-proof.” Ian Gibbs, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of The Shade Store says, “We have long admired Victoria’s ability to create luxurious interiors with an instinctively American appeal. Her talent for incorporating architectural elements into interiors is unparalleled, and windows are an important part of this practice. We are thrilled to bring her coveted design sensibility to our clients.”

Victoria Hagan’s new collection for The Shade Store is inspired by nature’s palette.

Frank Ponterio’s collection of fabrics and trims with Clarence House echo the fine luxury of the Italian lifestyle.

FRANK PONTERIO X CLARENCE HOUSE Throughout his life, Ponterio was captivated by the way the Europeans marry the strong with the delicate. This collection of fabrics and trims reveal the narrative of Ponterio’s travels as they come to life through plush velvets, heavy alpaca wools, and chunky textured linens. The patterns are named for the source of their inspiration while the trims demonstrate his admiration for Italian fashion with cords that mirror men’s friendship bracelets, cashmere sweaters, and leather jackets and tapes that showcase the allure of equestrian lifestyle. Innovation, unique raw materials, attention to detail and specialty finishing are the characteristics that differentiate this collection. Refined and authentic, Ponterio tells a story of old-world craftsmanship, showing evidence of the artist’s hand along with flashes of his life—from his Italian roots and broader European travels to his fascination with the sporting lifestyle, classic automobiles, and the lasting impact of timeless yet forward-thinking fashion. Ponterio created his collection the way Italians put together their clothing: with tailored precision that is at once effortless and unmistakably deliberate. Available through Holly Hunt. 46

MICK DE GIULIO X TECH LIGHTING With a career spanning over 45 years, designer Mick De Giulio is internationally recognized for designing innovative kitchens and is widely acclaimed for creating products that have changed how people use their kitchens. In early 2021, Tech Lighting, a Visual Comfort & Co. brand, will introduce a new collection of lighting fixtures designed by De Giulio. As with his interiors, this modern, sculptural collection combines unique finishes and refined proportions, demonstrating De Giulio’s philosophy that lighting is not merely a necessity, but an art form that can transform a space. “I love that there is so much opportunity for good design in a kitchen,” says De Giulio. “The challenge is to make each element in a composition not only highly functional, but also beautiful. Because today’s kitchen is the room where most of the day-to-day living will take place, infusing a sense of comfort into the space is also very important. When the design works, the impact upon people’s homelife can be tremendous.” Available through CAI Designs and de Giulio kitchen design. De Giulio’s collection for Tech Lighting is modern and sculptural, with unique finishes and refined proportions.

SAMUEL & SONS X PERENNIALS Perennials is the leading source for luxury performance fabrics and rugs, and their new collaboration with Samuel & Sons—the Terrace collection— launched in August 2020. The line will feature 11 borders, cords, and fringes all woven from Perennials 100% Solution-Dyed Acrylic yarns, which are stain, mildew, UV-ray resistant + bleach cleanable. “Performance products are more important than ever for households. We expect the category will only continue to grow,” explains Michael Cohen, President at Samuel & Sons. “The partnership with Perennials brings together two leaders in the design industry to produce ground-breaking performance trimming.” Ann Sutherland, CEO, Perennials & Sutherland, LLC says, “The Perennials team enjoyed working with Samuel & Sons on this collection of beautiful trims—educating their team on the benefits and capabilities of our 100% solution-dyed acrylic fibers. This is the first of other collections we believe will make the Samuel & Sons x Perennials partnership a long-term success story!”

SAMUEL & SONS X SARAH FLINT The noted shoe designer is combining her beautifully elegant footwear with Samuel & Sons’ distinctive trimmings. SHADES OF GREY This private retreat is a story of contrasts. Our clients wanted a sexy-but-tailored look in their bedroom and bath, with just enough feminine, but not too much. This was accomplished with soft silver-tone metal colors, black and white and a splash of blue. Glass lamps and a crystal chandelier contrast with the simple silver metallic nightstands from CAI Designs. owadays, time spent at home can feel more like a chore than a luxury. Remote learning, remote working, remote shopping: We can pinpoint the exact moment when our world was suddenly reduced to the size of our property lines. Never have our home environments been so important, especially in those rooms where we go to seek individual solace or fellowship with our families. A long soak in the tub, a family meal in the kitchen, breakfast in bed, an hour with a good book in a cozy corner, and yes, a video call to catch up with friends or colleagues in our home office—these private moments have taken on greater significance here in the new normal. Though form must always follow function in good design, it’s time to make the form as beautiful as possible. Our portfolio of private rooms will serve as inspiration for your own intimate spaces. Whether you are a dyed-in-the-wool modernist, have a passion for the classics, or you fall somewhere in the middle of the design spectrum, the gorgeous and glamorous spaces on these pages can offer a fantasy escape or a blueprint for your own aspirations.

POOLHOUSE RETREAT Dual Concept Design was charged with creating a private retreat for a home in Winnetka. The lavish poolhouse is connected to the main house by an underground marble stair hall. The poolhouse features luxurious finishes such as velvet wallcoverings, sparkling chandeliers, mosaic tile that glimmers, black millwork and gold leaf accents. The swimming pool is tiled in dark blue, and overhead the ceiling twinkles with a hand-painted night sky mural. Adjacent to the pool is a lounge area perfect for entertaining. Sconces and chandelier by Elegant Lighting from CAI Designs reflects in the platinum mica wallcovering by ROMO, and illuminates a comfortable seating area featuring a sectional sofa and side chairs from Homecrest covered in Mirage by Holly Hunt. INDOOR OUTDOOR Designer Mick De Giulio took a drab Highland Park galley kitchen and turned it into a streamlined, opento-the-outdoors, comfortable place for family to gather. The space was a standard galley-style kitchen. De Giulio enlarged the window over the sink bringing the base to countertop level, created an island, and used materials such as polished stainless steel and glass to create transparency and reflection—all which help to make the space feel larger. Signature design details include a custom quartzite and stainless steel sink with sliding accessories and stainless steel and glass front drawers, made in their metal shop. The white, high-gloss cabinetry by Siematic in this project is from de Giulio kitchen design, with appliances from Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, and Gaggenau. De Giulio says, “Because of the kitchen’s small size, every inch had to be considered for its function.” 50

SPA SUITE When an Anaheim Ducks’ hockey player was looking to create a vacation getaway for his new wife and their blended families, they turned to Armina Interiors to create the perfect nest. As the California couple wanted to move back to Michigan in May and had an August wedding to plan – they asked Armina Interiors for a completely turnkey design that involved renovating the entire 5,000 square foot home. Interior Designer Armina Kasprowicz says, “I don’t like ‘decorated’ rooms. A home is supposed to look like it’s done over time which is very difficult to achieve with a turnkey design done long distance.” In order to make the design work with lots of whites and grays the designer layered a mix of patterns, textures and organic forms. The spa-like feel is tied together by the Ann Sacks tile floor and their Savoy ceramic tile in the shower. The bright white vanity with matte black hardware adds graphic punch. designchicagomag.com

HISTORIC RENOVATION When designer Lisa Johnson decided to renovate her own home in Winnetka, she wanted to be mindful of the estate’s history, while making it livable for a modern family with three teenaged boys. Renovation and design decisions were driven by the core history of the home and executed in a transitional, sophisticated style showcasing beautiful use of color and texture throughout. In the kitchen, modern lucite chairs line up at the island, adding contrast in the traditional room. Backsplash tile in a chevron pattern by Ann Sacks adds graphic interest, and the Wolf stove and kitchen island are illuminated by pendant lights in a traditional shape. In the butler’s pantry the cabinets are painted a sophisticated Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore, and the mirrored wall reflects the light, in contrast to the navy Phillip Jeffries grasscloth on the walls. Photography by Jane Beiles.

ITALIAN STYLE A well-organized, elegant closet can be a retreat. Scavolini’s new closet systems are the ultimate getaway, with a range of accessories including shoe racks, trouser rails, pull-out drawers with inserts, racks, hangers, and rails. Sumptuous materials such as leather and leatherette door finishes are available, making this next level closet system the best in both form and function. designchicagomag.com

LINCOLN PARK KITCHEN For a remodeling project in Lincoln Park, a young couple called interior designer Clare Staszak. She says, “I drew inspiration from more traditional kitchens and classic colors and patterns. Taking the cabinets all the way to the ceiling helped to show off the tall ceiling height, maximized storage and created an opportunity to introduce some pattern. We used wallpaper behind all the glass cabinets, and on the window wall.” The smaller galley style kitchen was expanded, maximizing storage and entertaining functionality, adding a bigger pantry and a wine refrigerator as well. The room has atmospheric mood lighting from CAI Designs, heated flooring, a 21 square foot shower with massage jets and tiles by Artistic Tile, sparkling studded hardware adorning the custom built cabinetry, sophisticated high end plumbing fixtures with crystal handles, and a touch of glamour with a shimmering white marble mosaic tile vanity wall, also by Artistic Tile.

COUNTRY ESTATE Interior Designer Jessie D. Miller created this Illinois home that includes an impressive contemporary kitchen and an elegant dressing room for the lady of the house. The kitchen is outfitted in Christopher Peacock’s Refectory Collection. The hood has an antique pewter body with polished nickel straps and oval nail heads, and is accented by the hand-burnished nickel hardware: Refectory knobs, pulls, strap hinges and ice box latches. The nine-inch thick butcher block tops add contrast to the island, and are made from end grain walnut, while the island perimeter cabinets have a low-luster finish. Decorative glass cabinets are backed in quartersawn oak finished in antique black. The dressing room combines elegance and efficiency, with plenty of storage in Christopher Peacock’s non-beaded Scullery Collection, in quarter-sawn oak with a licorice finish. In contrast, the adjacent closets are finished in bleached oak. Tying the look together are the new Scullery bin pulls in polished nickel. The worktop has a classic edge profile and is an extension of the closet and island. This space provides an area to get ready for the day, with a beautiful view of the outdoors. LAYERED LUXURY Carly Pokornowski Moeller of Unpatterned Design created two different bedrooms at opposite ends of the design spectrum. Above, an unexpected feature wall with Harlequin wallpaper from Style Library anchors a layered bedroom in neutral tones with a pop of plum in throw pillows. Nightstands from Bungalow 5 at Michael-Cleary. At right, a Mediterranean-inspired master suite in a North Side bungalow has a cozy corner reading nook and a bright and cheerful bath. Moeller brought in shades of blue throughout because of her clients’ love of the water, sailing, and European seaside towns such as Positano, Italy. In the blue and white tiled bath, fixtures by Brizo provide the spa shower experience. In the reading nook, Roman shade and pillow fabric by Schumacher are inspired by ancient Greek key patterns.

STREAMLINED The original design for this home on Chicago’s North Shore by Thomas Sarti Girot Interiors and Orren Pickell Building Group, had to be completely reconstructed after a devastating fire. The original sink wall in the kitchen looked into a playroom, but the owners’ children were older and so that wall came down, opening the kitchen to a new informal sitting room. A modern mix of painted white and high gloss red cabinetry from Wood-Mode created a bright, contemporary space. The Super White Quartz perimeter cabinetry has a clean line recessed panel, and the homeowner wanted a splash of color in the space so the designers matched Benjamin Moore Heritage Red for the island. The custom hood is wrapped in Calacatta Gold marble. Appliances include Best (ventilation), Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Miele.

“THE GLASS ADDITION GIVES THE FAMILY A CONNECTION TO NATURE AND ALLOWS THE FAMILY-ORIENTED ROOMS TO ALL FUNCTION AS ONE AND FEED OUT ONTO THE DECK.” —James Dolenc

W

hen a couple approached James Dolenc and Tom Riker to design the interiors of their historic Lincoln Park, Chicago home, the designers were delighted. The clients, both high-powered executives, had recently purchased a c. 1886 three-story Victorian home and were working with architect Ann Krsul to add a huge, modern addition to the back of the home. “We were so tired of doing gray interiors,” says Dolenc, “and here we were being asked to create a fun, and colorful place for a family of four to come home to, within an architecturally significant structure. It was liberating to be able to spread our wings!” Krusl’s spacious addition married the home’s very traditional façade with a modern glass exterior in the rear—paving the way for a new light-filled family room, breakfast room, and kitchen. “The glass addition gives the family a connection to nature and allows the family-oriented rooms to all function as one and feed out onto the deck,” explains Dolenc. As principles of James Thomas Interiors, Dolenc and Riker knew that to create a cohesive sense of flow, the furnishings had to bridge the gap between the home’s classical roots and its contemporary, new lease on life. With all of the public spaces on the main floor, the bedrooms on the top floor, and the lower level housing a library and fitness room, Dolenc and Riker got to work. Since the front part of the home was more formal—from the grand staircase at the entrance, the ornate Victorian moldings, and the marble fireplaces— the designers decided to highlight the classical elements with complementary modern touches. In the living room, a graphic yellow-and-white rug dictated the design. “It set the stage for the whole house” says Riker of the dynamic, color-happy rug. “We always like to have one pattern drive the boat, and our clients were not afraid of color or pattern in the least.” A Hunt Slonem artwork over the fireplace, black-and-white Chevron-patterned drapes, and the chests flanking the fireplace followed suit. Frameless mirrors on either side of the painting offer a quiet sense of expansion and balance out the room’s innate elegance. Meanwhile, just underneath the living room on the lower level, sits a gem of a room. The library, where the family sometimes ends the night when entertaining,

In the dining room, a beautiful silk butterfly fabric on the back of the dining chairs plays off Damien Hirst’s similarly themed kaleidoscopic artwork. Solid upholstery, a Phillip Jeffries Glam Grass wallcovering, and silk drapes from Schumacher in a calming blue hue offer a more serene appeal. Understated yet gorgeous accessories from Baker Furniture provide the finishing touch. Towards the back of the house, a more casual ambiance abounds in the family’s open-plan common spaces. Meanwhile, the breakfast area’s charming, two-toned banquette pairs beautifully with upholstered Saarinen chairs and a modern chandelier. A sectional covered in an eye-catching Stroheim fabric perfectly offsets the vivid mohair velvet fabric on a swivel chair and forms an invisible separation between the breakfast area and the family room. A custom fringe rug from Maharam that Dolenc describes as almost “rooted in fashion,” with its 60s and 70s-inspired color blocking, steals the show. The entire living space in the rear end of the home was purposely designed to exude a wonderful, welcoming vibe that inspires convivial relaxation. Despite the designers’ deft use of color, ultimately it was their talent at melding contemporary, midcentury, and classic designs throughout that harmonizes the home’s past and present. Was getting away from shades of gray as fun as they thought it would be? “I would design a shoe box for them, it was that much fun,” exclaims Dolenc. n 60

esigning around clients’ existing pieces can be a blessing or a curse, depending on their taste and the quality of their collections. Fortunately, for Rebecca Pogonitz, the clients from Lake Forest who asked her to renovate and design a home for them in Minnesota had an arsenal of beautiful art and furnishings that she could mine. “It’s a designer’s dream to have clients with good art,” said Pogonitz, senior designer at CCS Interior Design Group, who was charged with helping a business executive and his wife create a casual chic, home on Lake Josephine in Arden Hills, Minnesota. The couple moved from their longtime home on Chicago’s North Shore to be near their daughters and grandchildren. The house itself, built in 2000, also had some great features worth preserving. They kept the hardwood floors and coffered ceilings; everything else had to go. “It was very out of date and not functional,” said Pogonitz. “The kitchen was not built-out, and the living room had a small fireplace. It was not conducive for entertaining or houseguests.” Functionality is key for any project CCS Interior Design Group takes on. Pogonitz recently joined forces with Cynthia Smith, principal and founder of CCS. Inundated with work and business costs, both designers were looking to hire an assistant when they decided it would more beneficial to work under one company. “Rebecca and I share a similar design aesthetic and work ethic,” Smith says of her new partner. “She has the creativity and puts things together very well, but understands that every project must be functional.” For the Minnesota lake house, Pogonitz covered walls on the main level in Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter to balance the chocolate hues of the oak floor. The neutral tones, favored overwhelmingly by CCS clients, also wouldn’t distract from the stunning view outside their windows, which she kept bare save for some discreet motorized shades. A waterfall island of Danby marble brings the eye toward the kitchen as does a custom stainless steel hood composed of polished and matte finishes. “The island is marble with deep chocolate veining,” the designer said. “We looked high and low for that theMART DESIGN CHICAGO

material.” She credits her contractor for sourcing the perfect slab. The clients, avid travelers who collect art, desired a more eclectic look for this home, straying from the traditional aesthetic of their previous home. It was also important to incorporate some of their existing pieces, such as the dining table. Pogonitz paired it with a china cabinet so heavily distressed by a faux finisher that it could easily pass for vintage. Both the table and storage unit nicely contrast the modern white kitchen. “We wanted to blend the modern and the old and to reflect their more eclectic taste,” she says. In the great room, a fireplace of porcelain tiles makes a striking focal point while the Cisco Brothers sofas and custom Burton James chaise lounge swathed in a chenille offer plenty of lounging opportunities. Pogonitz reframed an abstract painting the couple owned and layered in some vintage accessories. “The wife loves clean lines and modern, but she also has a passion for vintage pieces.” The master suite is equally varied with its mix of textures and design motifs. An upholstered headboard is sheathed in a cotton from Old Biscayne Designs, and for those chilly Minnesota nights, there’s a faux fur throw within arm’s reach and a wool carpet bound in leather underfoot. A bold pattern of deep taupe and white tiles evokes some of the couple’s international travels in the master bathroom. “It has kind of a Moroccan motif and it injected some drama into a smaller part of the house that is mostly enjoyed by the owners,” Pogonitz says. A stool from Lee Industries, with its legs akimbo, also conjures a similar air. It sits under a desk from Maria Yee that Pogonitz added in lieu of a traditional vanity. “We created a more exotic, yet contemporary, space,” she adds. In contrast to the casual elegance of the main living area, the lower level is more relaxed. However, there’s no sloppy design here. Pogonitz deferred to darker tones and installed a sectional from Burton James in a high-performance fabric and two barrel chairs from Thayer Coggin in chenille. A round ottoman upholstered in Pindler fabric offers a jolt of color and eliminates any chance of grandchildren bumping sharp corners on a hard-edged coffee table. “They wanted a warm and fuzzy feeling where the family could hang out,” Pogonitz explains. With a cocktail bar of salvaged brick veneer painted black, a pool table and three guest rooms, the lower level is used all the time. “It’s a wonderful space.” The same could be said of the entire lake house. “People want rooms they can live in,” the designer says. “Gone are the days of rooms that are untouchable.” n

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED FROM HONG KONG TO WADSWORTH, THE WORLD IS FILLED WITH BEAUTIFUL SPACES. W R I T T EN BY D E B O R A H L . M A R T IN

lthough lately it feels like the world is excruciatingly—if only temporarily—small, beautifully designed public spaces await our return. Hotel lobbies, atriums, restaurants, and terraces all beckon. Those spaces are created by designers and architects to welcome the public, to entice, to energize, and to inspire. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando said, “I believe that architecture is fundamentally a public space where people can gather and communicate, think about the history, think about the lives of human beings or the world.” While we are currently staying close to home, forgoing travel plans for the moment, we can still dream of convivial spaces filled with people, delicious food, and beautiful design.

GILDED AGE While we long for the days of being whisked away to a fabulous five-star resort, we can dream about lounging in the lobby of The Westgate Hotel in San Diego. Interior designer Jacoi Mann incorporated some of Ebanista’s most-loved pieces, embodying luxe character, and charm, to create charming European ambiance and a welcoming atmosphere that is both chic and comfortable. Ebanista’s Marchese sofas, Yves cocktail tables, Muses lounge chairs, Cavello ottomans, and Simone side chairs are just some of the pieces that the brand contributed to the look of this elegant space. 70

RUSTIC CHIC The slogan for The Shanty Restaurant in Wadsworth, Illinois is “built by the people”, and that is exactly how this 7,500 square foot expansion dream came true for owner Dimitri Kallianis. The original Shanty restaurant was first opened over 100 years ago and was bought by Kallianis in 2006. It has twice been featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. In keeping with the slogan and Kallianis’ commitment to the Wadsworth community, he assembled a local team to make his dream come true: Architect Chuck Bleck of Bleck & Bleck Architects of Libertyville; General Contractor Tony Sullinger of Greater Midwest Builders in Gurnee; and Interior Designer Renae Harma of Renae Harma Interiors in Wadsworth. Harma honored the rustic look of the original restaurant with Masonry and Banknote wallcoverings from Area International, beautiful shades of grey and silver from Benjamin Moore, and rustic surfaces from Exquisite Surfaces. solo stem in a streamlined vase. A Cherner armchair set against a bare white wall. When reduced to a matter of ruthless subtraction, minimalism can leave one echoing Robert Venturi’s famous quip, “Less is a bore.” But when employed as an organizing principle rather than a floor-to-ceiling aesthetic, less can be more. For a suburban couple with a penthouse pied-à-terre at The Hayden in Chicago’s West Loop, minimalism meant limiting the primary materials of their interiors to concrete, steel, and glass. “They wanted to step off the elevator onto polished concrete and see the entire first floor of the unit, they wanted to see though the space to the skyline beyond,” explains interior architect, Alan Barker, Associate Principal at the Lamar Johnson Collaborative. To satisfy that desire, Barker removed almost all of the existing walls and reconfigured the space by inserting custom glass and steel partitions outfitted with sliding doors in the same materials. While an inviting transparency was key to the homeowners’ vision, so too was a kitchen that meant business. “I really like to cook,” says Barker’s client, “and sometimes, with family alone, we can be ten at dinner. So, I wanted a big kitchen with a big island.” And not just any island. “I appreciate that people like to gather around a kitchen island,” shares the resident chef, “but when people put down a drink or a purse, it becomes more an entertainment area than a workspace.” To keep that from happening, she worked with Steve Karp of Bentwood of Chicago to create a massive work-station with no overhang to accommodate stools. Instead, the side of the island that faces the free-flowing dining area is pure function, with drawers to hold utensils and open shelving that houses plates, bowls, and serving pieces. “What I loved about Alan and Steve,” says the client, “is that I could come to them with an idea and they would just make it work.” For Karp — whose team also customized the home’s laundry, pantry, and bathrooms — the project marked a career high. “The collaboration with the client and Alan made this unlike any project we’ve taken on in recent years,” he says. “Our work is all about improving quality of life, and hitting that perfect balance between function and aesthetics. I think we achieved that here.”

Stainless steel and subway tile underscore the highly intentional functionality of a kitchen designed for serious home cook, with a Wolf cooktop and integrated coffee maker, a Cove dishwasher, and Sub-Zero freezer drawer.

The homeowners’ penchant for industrial chic is stamped through the residence, but Karp and Barker invested the space with details that offset the warehouse vibe. In the intimate wine room, Karp created a focal wall composed of shagreen-covered tiles in a herringbone pattern. Barker employed zinc panels to warm up the wall around the fireplace. Together, the two fashioned a unique bar for the living room, composed of pleated zinc topped with solid walnut. Although spun, essentially, on an open plan, the unit is no one-note expanse, thanks to such eye-pleasing details as the darklygrouted subway tile in the kitchen and the pendant, brass-framed open shelves over the bar. Even the oh-so-practical laundry room is elevated by a compass star pattern floor tile. And while the furniture follows an urbane palette of black, gray, and white, the massive dining table—made from planks of 150-year-old reclaimed maple strikes a dramatically generous note of conviviality, that come-and-sit spirit that is fundamental to a sense of home. Greater than the sum of its parts, this city aerie proves that restraint is not restraining, that a muted range of tones need not be bland, and that—in the right hands—less is never less. n 76

hen the owners of a 4,000-square-foot home in Oak Brook wanted a more peaceful palette, they turned to the design minds at Vincere. Principals Michael Stornello and Tom Konopiots were determined to keep the design lively by maximizing the impact of architecture, art pieces, and open space for big family gatherings. “We discussed an overall sensibility—light, neutral and inviting— that could have a sense of formality when needed, but still be lived in really comfortably on a daily basis,” explains Konopiots. “I think the real kickoff for this was probably the living room because those ceilings go over 15 feet, so we knew there was a real chance for some dramatic effect,” Konopiots continues. “We play on that by taking curtains high on the wall, doing the etageres so that they would enhance the height, as well as hanging two substantial chandeliers that would take the eye up.” Those walls also left plenty of room to showcase art. The designers started by recontextualizing pieces from the owners’ collection. “The Chagall prints were great, but they were framed extremely ornately before,” said Stornello. “We wanted to redeploy them in a way that sort of suited this slightly more laidback sensibility.” And when it came to sourcing new pieces, they turned to theMART. “The Richard Norton Gallery is a really great gallery,” notes Konopiots. “The painting above the fireplace in the

The number of guests the homeowners can invite to dinner. “The dining table can accommodate—with the leaf—ten seated,” says Stornello. “And there is a sofa table that actually can be pulled out and it can accommodate another six.” But it will still feel spacious. “We took this grass-cloth style wallpaper up onto the tray to enhance that sense of space and height.” When it came to the lady of the house’s office, it was time to take a risk. “We thought that this was a place for an unexpected departure into pattern,” said Konopiots. “The floral wallpaper is great because it has some coral and a little subtle mustard and silver, so it catches the light.” 84

It was a tough decision for the client. “We had a moment where she got cold feet again,” says Stornello. “We said, ‘You really, really have to trust us on this,’” Konopiots adds with a chuckle. “And then, of course, she loved it.” The clients took another leap of faith in the bedroom. “Believe it or not, it was a bed that we found at retail, and we had a slipcover made with a Clarence House fabric,” said Stornello. “The fabric is still Clarence House, so it’s somewhat budget friendly, but not inexpensive,” Konopiots elaborates. “And then the Rose Tarlow printed linen for the curtains. Those two were the things that really sort of pair beautifully together and set the tone for the room.” Team Vincere also takes pride in decisions that added richness designchicagomag.com

They recommended more substantial walls for the Oak Park home to allow for deep-set windows and richer treatments. “Details that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to point out are part of what draws you in and makes you feel good,” he adds. But after tackling a restrained color scheme, Konopiots and Stornello seem excited for upcoming changes of pace, including a home in Lake View—which Stornello describes as having “lots of beautiful rich, deep, saturated, warm, inviting color throughout”—and a vibrant, office for a media executive Konopiots describes as seeking “a camera-ready background for her many, many online meetings.” n designchicagomag.com

drawing, and learning how to communicate through drawing or speaking.” Students are also taught how to create design proposals—allowing them to have a voice and learn how to turn a concept into a fully fleshed-out idea. In June of 2020, the Chicago Mobile Makers Makerspace—a retrofitted, 108-square-foot former USPS delivery van replete with a boosted electrical system that includes four rooftop solar panels to provide renewable energy, ample work surfaces, and storage for all sorts of design tools including a laser cutter and a 3D Printer—debuted. The point of the truck, explains Bird-Murphy, “is to bring programming and high-tech cool tools directly to communities that cannot necessarily come to us.” A winner of Chicago’s inaugural Design Impact Grant— an award started to provide project-specific grants to individuals and organizations addressing pressing issues in Chicago’s communities through design—Bird-Murphy used some of the funds to finish her tricked-out design van. The rest will fund a design/build program on the South or West side of Chicago. The grant is a key component of Designing a Better Chicago, an initiative organized and supported by NeoCon and theMART, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), and the Design Museum of Chicago. “The grant program is awesome,” says Bird-Murphy. “To have these really big Chicago-based names invest dollars into these types of projects and have them focused on literally ‘designing a better Chicago’ is amazing.” Cities, she explains, “have the capabilities of providing something for everyone, only if and when they build for everyone.” As for future plans? Bird-Murphy is hoping to create a permanent hub for all of the organization’s making needs. But ultimately, she says, “the hope for Chicago Mobile Makers is that some of these kids become changemakers in their communities later in life.” n designchicagomag.com

hen it comes to turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, few have the unyielding passion necessary to make it happen. In 2017, architect Maya Bird-Murphy did just that—turning an ambitious aspiration born and fleshed out on the pages of her graduate thesis—into reality. Chicago Mobile Makers, a nonprofit organization that offers free and low-cost design and skill-building programs to the Windy City’s youth, is flipping the paradigm of possibilities for a new generation of makers and thought leaders. “I was surrounded by architecture very early,” says Bird-Murphy. “It was talked about a lot and we had school field trips to Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio—that was my first exposure to architecture.” BirdMurphy grew up in Oak Park, Illinois—a village that is home to the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright structures in the country, and she later recognized that she was fortunate to grow up surrounded by diversity and incredible architecture. If history is any indication, the places you live can influence your trajectory—and that is something Chicago Mobile Makers addresses. A summer stint at architecture camp during high school and a subsequent undergrad degree in architecture at Ball State solidified BirdMurphy’s interest in architecture and design, but it also woke her up to the differences in opportunity available to people of color—she was one of only two black people in her graduating class. The exploration of public interest design and finding a way to make it—and the field of architecture—feel accessible both economically and socially to all became a motivating influence. While working on her thesis for a Master’s in architecture, Bird-Murphy tackled these issues as well as the notion of making the built environment more equitable, especially in marginalized neighborhoods. A professor with a penchant for identifying good ideas encouraged her to take her vision into the real world. BirdMurphy did so, thinking: “Why not put this program on wheels?” And so, Chicago Mobile Makers was born. Today, Chicago Mobile Makers offers free and low-cost interactive workshops and skill-building programs that encompass design, architecture, digital fabrication, basic construction, and placemaking in underrepresented Chicago schools and communities. In 2019 alone, the nonprofit hosted more than 150 workshops, reaching more than 670 kids in 10 distinct neighborhoods. The goal, she explains, is to encourage Chicago’s youth to “to become advocates and changemakers, and think and analyze at a systemic level.” Workshops, which can range from a few hours to eight week courses, cover useful skills such as how to use various power tools, 3D printing, and how to fabricate, build, and design objects. But most of all, it teaches them how to problem solve. “We are always using our hands, no matter what we’re doing,” says Bird-Murphy. “We’re always
