of great design here at home and abroad. We are all dreaming of the travel that is in our future:

To inspire your daydreams, we collected some international architecture and design from across the globe: Asia, Europe, the UK, and South America all make appearances on our pages. And closer to home, a modern house in the Hudson Valley and a desert home in Paradise Valley, Arizona have us dreaming of summer getaways and road trips through this beautiful, diverse country. J GEIGER SHADING The C Series Shading System was the perfect solution for the new Brooklyn offices of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). The multi-national architecture firm, which has studios in New York, Copenhagen and London, took over 50,000 square feet of a 1912 building and created a modern, open-plan studio that maximizes light and space. The motorized solar shades allow the architects to control the light and still appreciate the views of the Brooklyn Bridge. For rooms where additional light control is needed, the solar shades were installed over room darkening shades. The shades are controlled through keypads, with four to eight units linked to each keypad.

hen it comes to designing the perfect room, what goes on the floor is one of the most critical design decisions to be made, and there are a lot of factors to consider. The floor can be thought of as a fifth wall, and it is a canvas for creativity, with limitless possibilities: tile, wood, stone, porcelain, or rugs, in styles that run the gamut, from modern to traditional, in bold patterns or subtle solids. Here is a look at some of the most unique and exciting styles on the market now. ritish design duo Don McCollin and Maureen Bryan’s partnership grew out of a passion for highlighting the individual qualities of the materials they use, as well as creating something new and unexpected. Their devotion to materiality, shape and function make them a perfect fit in the Holly Hunt portfolio. The designers create distinctive designs that call on their backgrounds in textiles and ceramics, with McCollin exploring surface textures and patterns, and Bryan focusing on sculptural forms. Using traditional materials and processes such as scagliola—a Roman technique from the 18th century that imitates marble—they produce small batches, limited editions, and unique pieces that are works of art for the home. hollyhunt.com

enowned industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa has a history of collaboration with B&B Italia, bringing his Japanese design aesthetic to the storied Italian brand. His new collection of outdoor furniture, Ayana, is inspired by the ancestral designs of his native land. Pieces are made from natural, unpainted teak, which ages and evolves, revealing the intrinsic characteristics of this material. The structures have invisible joints held together by wooden pins instead of metal hardware, adding to both the beauty and the function: as the hardy wood expands and contracts with the weather, metal would cause irreversible cracking or deformation. oo often, tall buildings get attention because they are, well, tall. Even those that don’t quite scrape the sky are more about verticality that anything else. Blame it on the curtain wall. No matter how cleverly the volume of a tower is tweaked, if it’s dressed in glass, there’s nowhere to look but up. While that sleek skin isn’t about to disappear anytime soon, increasingly, architects and corporations are turning to other treatments that not only meet their technical requirements but invest buildings with an eye-engaging dimensionality and presence, as well. Cosentino, an industry leader in surface materials, has long been the go-to for designers and clients looking to give their projects a significant finishing touch. And one of its newest products, Dekton — a high strength composition of porcelain, glass and quartz — is quickly finding its way to some of the more inventive buildings around the world. Take the ToHa building in Tel Aviv. A sort of inverted ziggurat designed by Ron Arad, the 29-story structure rises on two beefy legs, like some gargantuan robot from an old sci-fi flick. The custom colored Dekton panels on the exterior — a progressive palette of six shades — add texture and depth to this less-than-conventional facade. In Madrid, Mendoza+Simal Architects incorporated large format hexagonal pieces into its renovation of the headquarters of Gunni & Trentino, a supplier of luxury interior decor products. Black at the base of the building and executed in a lighter, warmer tone above creating a honeycomb effect, the Dekton panels give the facade a graphic punch and underscore the street-friendly scale of the building.

Never purely cosmetic, Dekton played a key role in reviving Cap Ferrat, a 45-year-old residential landmark in Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Ipanema neighborhood. Over the years, aluminum components of the balconies and the original granite pieces that sheathed their perimeter beams had deteriorated badly. Completely replacing the damaged cladding proved cost prohibitive. And any new material installed over the existing elements needed to complement the building’s aesthetic and more importantly, not weigh more than 90 kg per square meter. The office in charge of the project —Di Filippo Arquitectura — reviewed various options before determining that Dekton offered the best solution. “We had to choose a cladding material with very particular properties,” explains Juan Carlos Di Filippo. “Its porosity needed to be as low as possible in order to resist the damage caused by a seafront environment, it needed to weigh as little as possible, but have large dimensions, and it needed to be able to be installed using the system of stainless-steel inserts. Last, but not least, it needed to have a low level of solar absorption.” While there are plenty of glass and steel towers going up across the planet —some of which truly deserve attention — keep an eye open for buildings that present a different face to the world. They may not make the headlines, but they may well make your day. ■

When I think of a true classic, I think of the Spey tub by Drummonds. The cast-iron, claw-foot tub is perfectly proportioned. I am particularly drawn to a bold painted exterior—a great fit for my colorful aesthetic.

We used Artistic Tile’s Hip 2B Square mosaic tile in green in a very highglam bathroom for celebrity clients. It is a true knockout.

As a coffee addict, the Miele built-in coffee maker is my personal favorite appliance. I love installing it for added luxury and functionality—my dream kitchen will definitely have one of these!

rchitect Mark Bearak of dtls.ARCHITECTURE was seeking a personal getaway from New York City’s hustle and bustle. But he found that the historic homes of Hudson didn’t offer quite the escape he sought. He explains, “We bought a piece of land and thought: how do you reflect being out in nature? There’s no better way to do that than by building a glass house.” As he built glass walls to bring the outside in, designer Aston Smith of Bilotta Kitchens worked to carry that mix into the culinary heart of the home. “The use of the dark material as a backdrop to the wood that was used on the island,” she points out, “is a nice play in the same colors and materials that you find when you step outside the house.” Bearak and Smith had worked together on multiple projects, so he trusted her and Bilotta to help find kitchen solutions. “The thing that brings me back to Bilotta and Aston is that they can do anything. They can take a sketch and build a custom door out of it,” he says. “The precision engineering that we do—as far as concealing appliances and making the pantry on the right side of the main kitchen wall look indistinguishable from the refrigerator on the left side—

is something that draws people in,” explains Smith, who stocked the kitchen with Bilotta Collection Cabinetry, Brizo faucets and a sink by Elkay. Smith loved designing the room’s standout island to look “like a piece of furniture,” and Bearak enjoys how its cooktop calls an audience. “You get to look around at everyone while you’re cooking,” he enthuses. Other aspects Bearak loves about the home come from trusting his collaborators. “We wanted to do a custom concrete fireplace, and we knew we only had one shot to do it because the fireplace is handling all the lateral forces for the house,” he explains. A resulting bulge on one corner may have seemed like an imperfection at first, but his contractor advised patience. “Now we love it because it shows the history of building the house,” Bearak says. “The house is a T-shape, and at the very end of the long part of the T is the living room. Then as you move back towards the center, there’s the dining room and kitchen—because the kitchen really becomes the circulation hub of the home. Then you radiate out to the bedrooms, and each bedroom has its own bathroom,” Bearak explains—noting that guests occasionally request proof that the shades provide the necessary privacy for ablutions.

But it’s a small trade-off for stunning views of valleys, mountains, and their 40-foot-long pool, guarded by a curvaceous gabion wall. “We were incredibly lucky,” Bearak says of the process, “that we had good collaborators in the profession.” He credits the A&D Building as an important source of such partners—for this project and others. “We talked about Bilotta and how well that worked,” he continues. “We use Listone Giordano on tons of our projects. We use Cosentino on tons of our projects and have used Florense on a number of projects.” He adds that the creative experience is “so much more enriching: knowing that we have people who are thoughtful about the design.” Aston Smith agrees. “Working in the A&D building, we spend our days in partnership with industry professionals who bring us their best ideas that they spent months, hours, years formulating. And we’re fortunate enough to have them trust us to turn those ideas over and put the last blush on them,” she says. “It’s still a huge, tingly, great feeling to know that I was able to be a part of this project with him—that this was something that had been a part of his own personal dream to build, and we made it happen.” ■

ery few artists earn the title of changemaker. Jay-Z, however, has built a career on changing the game across every platform he touches, and he can now add the design of his new headquarters for Roc Nation—his sprawling entertainment company that includes artists, athletes, publishing, film/TV and many other ventures—to his list. In collaboration with architect Jeffrey Beers—with whom Jay-Z and Roc Nation’s CEO Desiree Perez envisioned and developed their 40/40 Club—the office move from New York City’s Garment District into a sprawling 29,000 square foot office space across four floors in the heart of Chelsea, essentially reinvents the modern, post-Covid era office. “We transcend culture for a living,” explains Perez. “The design had to fit our style, yet also allow us to work comfortably.” The result is an airy, bright space punctuated by beams of natural sunlight. It’s meant to cultivate an aura that reads more hidden downtown art gallery than office. “We were inspired by the incredible art collection,” says Jeffrey Beers of Jay-Z’s world-class acquisitions, which include “vibrant album covers, an incredible array of artist photography, athlete jerseys and paraphernalia, as well as Paper Planes apparel,” all of which take center stage throughout the company’s four floors.

“I’m simple in terms of my personal style, and I wanted Jeff rey to create something strong and non-gender specifi c, while still being a little edgy,” says Perez of her personal offi ce (above), filled with rich textures, art tomes and contemporary art, all without a hint of corporate pretension. A massive painting by Christian Rosa anchors the offi ce of Roc Nation co-founder Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith. Under it, the seating area includes a velvet-clad sectional and lounge chairs by Holly Hunt.

“Once Desiree described Roc Nation’s bold, fearless and creative client culture, we instinctively understood how the look and feel of the office should develop,” explains Beers. “We used the art collection as the anchor to create a look that mirrored creative collaboration and bold artistry.” Fortuitously, the layout’s wide open spaces and the emphasis on privacy from the get-go— individual, private offices; listening rooms and individual booths—all became areas to work and meet, according to Perez, in addition to large balconies and a rooftop. “This has helped with the distancing,” she explains. Each of the four executive suites was customized to mirror its individual occupant. “We set out to create mini residences that spoke to the character and taste of each executive,” explains Beers. “We consistently used concrete flooring, walnut and blackened-steel paneling throughout the entire office for a uniform look.” Jay-Z chose the large-scale, black-and-white portrait by South African artist and human-rights activist Zanele Muholi to grace the ground floor side entrance (above). Calming blue tones and plush seating center the sixth-floor seating area while the walnut-and-glass floating staircase adds a sense of drama and intrigue. A “Soundsuit” by artist Nick Cave stands tall next to the staircase.

esign should be tailored to the landscape—at least that’s the argument this Paradise Valley, Arizona residence puts forth. Which is exactly why history came into play and Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson of the eponymous firm Drake/Anderson, were enlisted to wield their fearless approach to color on a new build. “As trusting, twenty-year-long clients, they let us choose the palette, and embraced it fully,” explains Drake. The wild-yet-serene landscape of the surrounding Camelback Mountains is not only mirrored in the living room’s dramatic double-height fireplace surround, but throughout the home. The result of a visit to the stone yards, the mesmerizing, bookmatched slabs of stone captivated the clients and subsequently inspired the home’s regional decor. “The choice pleasantly surprised me. I thought something this bold would be scary to them—but they absolutely adored it,” says Drake. The colors of cacti, sagebrush and turquoise play against vibrant orange tones that pay homage to the region’s native Indian Paintbrush flower. The open-plan layout on the main floor sets the tone for the rest of the home. Giant porcelain pavers in a soft sage green connect the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Expansive windows with sliding glass doors bring in the views and create a seamless transition from the indoors out. pastel faux suede lining the back wall that purposely steals the show. “I wanted to create a visual destination,” explains Drake. While most of the home’s private rooms are located on the second floor, the main bedroom is an extension of the great room—at least in terms of color. It is infused with tonalities of green, blue, and beige, while a bright, graphic painting ups the vibrancy. The master bath features a stunning backlit onyx floating wall set against a shimmering green glass mosaic wall. But the coup d’état is the connected outdoor shower—the designers commissioned a beautiful mosaic panel to inset into the wall that depicts, in fantasy fashion, an Arizona landscape. The home’s natural harmony with the outdoors is intentional. In an upstairs den/guestroom, a neutral, textured wallcovering sets the backdrop for sofas covered in a blazing hue that mimics the colors of red rock formations. A whimsical series of prints exude what Drake terms “a Wild West sense of humor, a great wink.” Coming from the cold, Northern states, the clients are thrilled with the results, says Drake, and are relishing “the flow of living that’s enjoyed so much in the Southwest.” ■

sits over an expressive silk-and-wool rug that Drake says reminds him of “desert sunsets.” Overhead, a giant orb by Barnaby Barford composed of 1,000 hand-painted ceramic pieces lit from within, gives the impression of a setting sun in all its glory. In the nearby kitchen, a lower ceiling height creates a sense of spatial differentiation while a vibrant, orange/red leather-wrapped refrigerator door speaks to the complexity of the design. Quartz, lacquered metal, glass, steel, and ceramic are just a few of the material elements that add interest. Just steps away, a custom dining table allows for regular convivial enjoyment. Holly Hunt dining chairs upholstered in a striking woven chevron pattern perfectly play off the enormous Dan Christensen painting that appears to offer yet another beguiling illustration of a setting sun. Outside, big bold prints add a bit of oomph, while various seating groups offer multiple perches from which to entertain and enjoy the impressive panorama. For pre- or post-dinner cocktails, Drake and Anderson outfitted a bar with all the necessary accoutrements. But it’s the channel upholstery in a

angzhou, the capital city of the Zhejiang province in China, sits at the terminus of the Grand Canal waterway, at the Eastern foot of the Tianmu (Eye of Heaven) Mountains, and on the shore of Xi (West) Lake. The city is celebrated for its beauty in poetry and paintings going back to the 9th century. The lake was a favorite imperial retreat, and has islands with temples, pavilions, gardens and arched bridges. Today, Hangzhou boasts worldclass architecture and is a hub of trade, industry and science. It has been selected as the site of the 2022 Asian Games. The Qiantang Residence by interior designer Austin Cai of NVD Interior Design reflects elements of life in this bustling metropolis of over 10 million people. The modern apartment is designed for an art collector and boasts a large collection of contemporary art from all over the world. In the living room, defined by woven screens made from hemp, the

curvilinear sofas echo the curves of the room. The layered stacking of textures and shapes are accented by the Raw carpet designed by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance for Tai Ping. A ring-shaped crystal light is designed by Hungarian artists János Héder and Judit Zoltai. A small open kitchen adjacent to the living room provides convenience for entertaining small parties or cooking casual family meals. In the Chinese tradition, there is a larger private kitchen that is hidden from sight. A room called “The Studio,” is covered in tropical flora on the walls, and an effusive ode to spring, the Daisy carpet by Tai Ping, on the floor. The room connects with the lush greenery on the adjacent terrace. The elegant master bedroom is anchored by Taiping’s Abalone rug from the Tides collection and is separated from the public rooms by a Diamond screen by Marcel Wanders and Gabriel Chiave. Walk-in closets by B&B Italia hold all the necessities of life. The marble-clad master bath is perfect for an in-home spa getaway. ■

But one thing is clear, when it comes to the European plan, style and function merge to create a beautiful juxtaposition of old-world elegance and modern innovation. Whether austere or over-the-top, and from tiny to grand, the European bath is always long on style and filled with luxurious touches that will withstand the test of time. Consider the charming English beauty of Kate Moss’s country home in the Cotswolds, with its period details and original cast iron tub in the center of the room. Says Moss, “My bathroom in the country is my favorite bathroom in the world, it’s my haven.” Contrast that with the spa-like appeal of the modern bath from Scavolini, or the luxurious mix in Portugal’s Palácio Príncipe Real Lisbon, built in 1877. It must respond, complement and interact with the site, whether it is a landscape in the countryside, an urban setting or the interior of an apartment. Simultaneously, I meet the client because the whole design process involves an intimate dance with the client, to listen to their desires, their needs and dreams, and — of course — their neuroses. I begin with old school hand sketches and small models, then my team draws up the ideas digitally in plan and 3-D. The goal is to maintain the concept, the feeling, the spark of the creative idea from beginning to the completed project, not an easy task, but when it happens, it is phenomenally rewarding. I like modern with a sense of humor. I don’t like anyone who takes themselves too seriously, so in my own personal space I like a clean, eclectic style with touches of personal interests and collections. Fortunately, I have been able to design three of my own spaces: a ground up modern town house in Seaside, Florida, where I had a spiral stairway to the sky atop the roof deck — a kind of “stairway to heaven.” In Miami Beach, my apartment is in a tower I designed that the developer named after myself, “The Gorlin,” with all kinds of quirky furniture design and art. Recently in New York, my apartment is a “lounge in the sky” with my collection of miniature buildings, robots, and an 18-foot

canvas printed version of a 17th-century Dutch painting from the Rijksmuseum with 31 soldiers. RUNNING WIDE

The range of our work is enormous, from Park Avenue apartments to homeless housing in the Bronx; renovation of the Admiral’s House in Governors Island; residential and office buildings in Elkhart, Indiana; towers in Jacksonville, Florida; and more houses in the Hamptons. TOP THREE?

My favorite project is always my next! Other than that: a house in Nairobi, Kenya for a “ménage à trois”; a house on a granite cliff overlooking the Atlantic in Nova Scotia; and my homeless housing in the Bronx — because architecture must help better the lives of everyone. ■ adbuilding.com
