SITE, CLIMATE AND SURROUNDING Faro is located next to the Ria Formosa, a unique coastal ecosystem with very high biodiversity and an ideal natural laboratory. It is a mesotidal lagoon, separated from the ocean by a system of barrier islands and inlets, which extends for about 55 km along the south coast of Portugal. This includes extensive mud flats, sand banks, dune systems, salt marshes and substantial sea grass beds. It is a natural park protected by national legislation and nature conservation regulations and most of it is of international importance. It is directly accessible on foot or with small boats.

ACCESS TO CCMAR The Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) in Faro is an independent multidisciplinary, non-profit research organization with competence in a range of areas of marine biology, fisheries and aquaculture. Its mission is to promote research and education on processes in the marine environment, with emphasis on biological interactions and the sustainable use of resources. It is part of CIMAR, a consortium of two research institutes with recognized excellence status in Portugal and also part of the University of Algarve. The Ramalhete Marine Station is a versatile infrastructure that includes smaller tanks to large outdoor mesocosms. It is located adjacent to one of the main channels of Ria Formosa, close to Faro international airport, 8km from the city and 4 km from the University of Algarve (Gambelas Campus).Â
OFFICE, PRINTS & PHONE CALLS An open office is available when requested for specific needs. It is located on the 2nd floor (office 2.56).
INTERNET ACCESS Wireless ualg-conferencias internet is available using a personal code.
MEALS AND DINNERS At Gambelas Campus of the University of Algarve you have many meal options. Lunches and dinners included during your stay are available at University canteen. Daily breakfast are available at building 7 Bar under request.
LODGING & SERVICES / CLEANING SERVICES Shared rooms in University apartments with shared bathroom and cooking/kitchen facilities. University apartments are located in the city of Faro, 6 Km away from CCMAR or Gambelas place, near CCMAR - Campus de Gambelas. Internet wireless access is available inside the apartment without additional costs when using your own laptop.
KEYS Two keys (1 building key and 1 apartment key) will be delivered to each person on arrival at the facility. Before leaving, do not forget to return the keys.

LODGING DISTANCES GAMBELAS – FARO CITY Public transports of Eva Bus company can be used for travelling between Faro and Gambelas University Campus. The lines 15 and 18 are the ones that you should use. Timetables are presented below. Personal transportation title is needed. Eva Bus Ticket office (see location in the map of Faro - orange square).
LODGING DISTANCES GAMBELAS – FARO CITY
ARRIVAL, CCMAR RECEPTION The University of Algarve – Campus de Gambelas is permanently open, during the week but the common work hours are between 08:00 am to 09:00 p.m. Out of these normal hours access to CCMAR is restricted.
INSURANCE Please keep your Insurance documentation accessible. Insurance must cover the full period of your stay at CCMAR and in Portugal, cover pre-existing medical conditions, and include world-wide travel assistance and emergency transportation services. This is a private cost not covered by our Institution.
RISK ASSESSMENT AND SAFETY RULES If you are a Laboratory User make sure you know and follow the Laboratory General Work Rules. It’s Your responsibility to ensure that you are properly informed, and that you have received the required information BEFORE you start your work. If there are any doubts don’t hesitate to ask the Safety officer at CCMAR. Plan your laboratory work with Laboratory responsible and prevent Risks; Make sure that you know where emergency showers, eye showers and fire extinguishers are located and how they work; Memorize evacuation exits and how to act in case of emergency; Make sure that you have your own Personal Protection Equipment and know how to use it; Always use protective clothing (personal lab coat) and shoes covered. Eye protection should always be used if there is a risk of splash. When the experiment is done or in case you need to exit the laboratory, remove gloves and make sure that you don’t contaminate keyboard, phones, door knobs, water taps, etc. Eating and drinking, is not allowed in the laboratory; Make-up is not allowed in the laboratory, Fume hood/fume bench should always be used when handling flammable, toxic or corrosive substances. When finished, be sure to close the fume hood/turn off;

RISK ASSESSMENT AND SAFETY RULES The fume bench works properly only if the object is kept below 20 cm above the surface. Do not cover more than one third of the surface and leave a 10 cm wide zone at the front to achieve a good protection. Only use the fume bench for handling cold substances; When experiments are planned have in mind the waste handling routines, it is important to minimize waste production, and their safely elimination; Experiments with vertebrates, radioactive substances, microbiological organisms or OMG (genetic modify organisms) are regulated separately and special permits are mandatory and required. You are not allowed to work with; Label all containers with substance name, concentration and symbol (if applicable), date, your name and group name; You are only allowed to use equipment and instruments that you are familiar with. If you are in any way uncertain do not hesitate to ask the safety officer or someone in charge of the item; For safety reasons, working by yourself in the laboratory for practical or other potentially dangerous tasks, is not allowed if you are alone, after working hours or weekends; The general regulations concerning work at CCMAR should also be applied when using boats, Ramalhete Marine Station or other field sampling work. It is important to plan the experiment with the supervisor, because he has the duty to decide whether a certain substance or activity should be allowed on lab/board/trip/natural environment. In case of chemical spillage, contain it to a restricted area, warn people in the laboratory to avoid injuries and clean it up according to the methods present in the respective material safety data sheet (MSDS). REMEMBER, always check the product MSDS before use any product. Storage material All stored materials should be labelled with your name, group name/institution, date and content. Poorly labelled things are thrown as waste! You may lose valuable material and it is also a hazard for the person cleaning out your stuff, other scientists and the environment; Only store chemicals in designated areas, no storage in fume hoods. If you are uncertain about what to store where, ask the person in charge of safety in that laboratory or safety officer.

RISK ASSESSMENT AND SAFETY RULES Waste handling routines All waste that differs from normal household waste should not be discharged to the common sewage or garbage. If you have any doubts about whether a dilute solution or a relatively harmless substance can be poured out in the lagoon/sea (in case of field laboratory) or sent down the drain to the sewage treatment, don´t hesitate to ask the safety officer. Before you initiate an experience, talk with you lab responsible in order to obtain indications on how to proceed with the waste and get the appropriate containers. Please fill with your Host risk assessment report, accordingly with planned activities and/or list of activities that will be carrying out during access at CCMAR infrastructure. This document must be filled, signed and returned to CCMAR Services.

25th April Bridge Completed in 1966 and originally named after dictator Salazar, this suspension bridge across the Tagus River changed its name after the revolution of April 25, 1974. It is a spectacular sight from any direction, with an overall length of 2278m (approx. 1.5 miles), and the longest central span in Europe (1013m/3323ft), longer than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, which it resembles. Its foundations also hold the world record by going 80m (262ft) below the riverbed to stand on basalt rock. Underneath it is an attractive dock and marina filled overlooked by restaurants and bars.

Praça do comércio This vast waterfront square also known as Terreiro do Paço or "the palace's square," is where the royal palace stood for over two centuries until 1755, when it was destroyed by the Great Earthquake. The royal family moved to another residence in the district of Belém, and the new arcaded buildings acted as the port of entry to the city. On the north side is a triumphal arch and one of the city's legendary cafes, Café Martinho da Arcada. It dates from 1782 and was a favorite of poets Fernando Pessoa and Almeida Garrett and of novelist Eça de Queiroz. In the center of the square is a statue of King Jose I showing him on horseback, wearing his emperor's mantle, and measuring 14 meters in height counting from the pedestal. Most of the government offices that once surrounded the square have now been taken over by restaurants with outdoor tables and there's a modern interactive museum called "Lisboa Story".

Rua das Portas de Santo Antão Leading up from behind the National Theater is Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, a lively pedestrian-only street known for its seafood restaurants. It is also the location of the classical Coliseu dos Recreios, the Lisbon Coliseum, opened in 1890 as a circus, and today a concert venue. At number 58 is the Casa do Alentejo, a peculiar 17th century building worth dropping into. It serves as a meeting place for people from the Alentejo province, and has an attractive Moorish courtyard and a restaurant filled with tile decoration. All the way at the end of the street is the Elevador da Lavra, the world's first ever funicular, powered by water when it opened in 1884. It leads to Jardim do Torel, a garden viewpoint off the beaten tourist path.
Santa Justa Elevator This structure was built at the turn of the century by the Portugal-born French architect Raoul de Mesnier du Ponsard (an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, explaining the structure's similarities to Paris' Eiffel Tower), to connect downtown to Bairro Alto (the lowest and highest points of the city). Originally powered by steam, it is 45 meters (147ft) high, and remains an interesting example of postEiffel iron architecture. The top of the Neo-Gothic tower, reached via a spiral staircase, has a cafe with splendid views of the city, including over Rossio Square, the castle and the river.

Mouros Castle: The Castle of the Moors (Portuguese: Castelo dos Mouros) is a hilltop medieval castle located in the central Portuguese civil parish of Santa Maria e São Miguel, in the municipality of Sintra, about 25km northwest of Lisbon. Built by the Moors in the 8th and 9th centuries, it was an important strategic point during the Reconquista, and was taken by Christian forces after the fall of Lisbon in 1147. It is classified as a National Monument, part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Pena Palace (Portuguese: Palรกcio da Pena): is a Romanticist castle in Sรฃo Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, Portugal. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19thcentury Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.

Antiga confeitaria de Belém: Since 1837, this patisserie has been transporting locals to sugar-coated nirvana with heavenly pastéis de belém. The crisp pastry nests are filled with custard cream, baked at 200°C for that perfect golden crust, then lightly dusted with cinnamon. Admire azulejos in the vaulted rooms or devour a stillwarm tart at the counter and try to guess the secret ingredient.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of the Discoveries) is a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary, in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém, Lisbon. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or Age of Exploration) during the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Rabelo boat is a traditional Portuguese cargo boat that for centuries was used to transport people and goods along the Douro River. Native from the Douro region, it does not exist in any other place of the world. Its history is closely linked to the 13:00 production and trade of port wine. Before the arrival of the railway, the rabelo was the fastest and the most efficient means of transport between the Douro Valley, where port wine is produced, and the city of Porto, where it was traded and exported worldwide. Although not in use anymore, still today the Douro River holds these vessels, belonging to port wine companies, in the cities of Porto and Gaia. 16:00

The Lello Bookstore, along with Bertrand in Lisbon, is one of the oldest bookstores in Portugal and frequently rated among the top bookstores in the world. The bookstore was frequented by JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, when she taught English in Porto and is reported to be an inspiration for her writing.
