SANTIAGO ARANA Over the past 13 years, Santiago Arana has gained a reputation as one of the most distinguished real estate agents in Los Angeles, garnering national recognition that includes being named among the Top 250 Realtors in the United States by The Wall Street Journal for five consecutive years. Part of a power trio that includes Billy Rose and Mauricio Umansky, Santiago joined The Agency in 2014 as Principal and Partner, specializing in high-end residential real estate and new construction in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Holmby Hills, the Sunset Strip, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Santa Monica and Malibu. Spearheading the company’s new Westside office in Brentwood, he doubled his business in the last year with his sales volume topping $305 Million. In addition to being featured by Variety and NRT, Santiago was also chosen as one of “Hollywood’s Top 25 Real Estate Agents” by The Hollywood Reporter in December 2013, 2014 and 2015. Last year, he represented the top one half of one percent of more than 1 million REALTORS® nationwide by ranking #11 in the country, #4 in California and #1 west of the 405 freeway. No stranger to representing clients such as Lady Gaga, Larry David, “King of Bonds” Jeffrey Gundlach, and Alessandra Ambrosio, among others, Santiago excels in the art of discretion whilst under the limelight, taking great care to tailor his marketing strategies to fit each individual property. Originally from Sucre, Bolivia, and with Spanish/Croatian roots, Santiago benefits from his cosmopolitan background and experience as well as a wealth of international contacts. He earned a degree in Business Administration and Marketing and uses that education to take a sophisticated approach to addressing his clients’ real estate needs. Santiago is known for his exceptional work ethic and his ability to close deals, as well as his friendly attitude. His contacts, professionalism and passion for exceeding clients’ expectations combine to make Santiago the ideal choice for a wide variety of real estate needs and investments. In past roles, Santiago served as Director of the New Construction Division and distinguished himself with his knowledge of (and success with) new development and investment properties throughout the Westside. As a longtime resident of Pacific Palisades with his wife and two sons, Santiago has an intimate knowledge of the Westside community. When not traversing the city for work, he enjoys martial arts (he’s a black belt in both kickboxing and Taekwondo), good Cabernet, opera and barbecuing with his family.

PUBLISHER LETTER
I
t is our true pleasure to welcome you all to the Inaugural issue of Aspen Luxury Life. Some of you may be wondering who we are. First, let me introduce ourselves, as you will hopefully be part of this journey with us, and will get to know us along the way.
My wife Carly and I have travelled to many a place far and wide, and know how fortunate we are to call Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley home. I myself hail from a little place called Melbourne, Australia. After travelling back and forth through my University years following the snow, I found myself in love with Aspen. I was lucky to meet Carly in Aspen, and we were married in the summer of 2012. Carly and her family moved here from Wisconsin chasing the milder winters, the beautiful Mountains, and everything else this town has to offer. Although still avid Packers fans, they have truly embraced Colorado and all the wonders it possesses.
26
Which bring us to this. We feel that Aspen Luxury Life can bring a new dynamic to the Aspen we love, while at the same time, allow us to share with the world our view of one of the most amazing places on the planet.
ASPEN LUXURY LIFE
Carly and I have owned and operated a number of Aspen hospitality businesses over the years, and recently I made the move into Luxury Real Estate with Coldwell Banker Mason Morse. We are expecting our first child in the beginning of the summer, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share our love of this place with our new addition.
With the snow now falling, the winter is off and running. We just hosted many of the world’s greatest at Rio Grande Park for the 4th Annual Aspen Snow Polo Championships, complements and praise as always to the exceptional Marc and Melissa Ganzi. We are truly blessed to have the finest players in the world, including the Face of American Polo, Nic Roldan, also the face of this first issue of Aspen Luxury Life, tearing up the snow of the Rio Grande in the chase of glory. Nic’s cover as you can see is simply spectacular, and his story inspirational. Speaking of inspiration, you will find such in the following pages with Jodi Larner of Cache Cache fame. This year the restaurant, with its master chef Chris Lanter, celebrate 29 years open for business in Aspen. This is no small feat as anyone here can tell you. I know you’ll all enjoy our seasonal tips, from Master Sommelier, and Wine Director at The Little Nell, Carlton McCoy. As you turn through the pages, you’ll come across Albert Sanford and his gallery Maximillian, his “playground.” We follow his journey from young art enthusiast in search of his first piece, to the world renowned, privately owned gallery he operates today. His hunt for art perfection inspires us all. Finally, who can forget the FIS World Cup Finals?! For the first time in 20 years, the finals will be held outside of Europe, on our very own Aspen Mountain! This event returns to it’s original home by Lift 1A, and we know it’ll be one of the events of the Season. Don’t miss it! With so much excitement ahead, we look forward to seeing you out there! Our prediction from Aspenweather.net, once again calls for above average snow and the thrill is in the air. We hope that everyone enjoys the Wine, the Dining, the Art, and the Fashion that makes up our Aspen Luxury Life.

Thompson’s Owl Farm in Woody Creek, now she’s a food columnist at the Aspen Times Weekly, and copyeditor for culture: the word on cheese. CHRISTINA OXENBERG
Christina Oxenberg was badly educated at too many schools to bother listing, including some highly suspect institutions where poker was on the curriculum. For real! School was mostly in England but also Spain, and New York City and the Colorado Rocky Mountains, if only to finish with a flourish. There would be no University. Instead Oxenberg went directly to Studio 54 where she was hired in a Public Relations capacity. This was the ‘gateway drug’ that introduced her to everyone and everything she would ever need for the rest of her life. A Pandora’s Box, if you will, to be used with great care. The culmination, to date, is a heap of published books, a great deal of wonderful experiences including 5 magical years in Southern Colombia (not a hostage). Throughout her adventures Oxenberg always wrote. To date she has 6 published books and a loyal readership. Find her at www.wooldomination.com
OLIVIA Q. DAANE
Olivia Daane received a B.A. from Vanderbilt University in 1992. She then studied with Syracuse University’s undergraduate and graduate programs in Florence, Italy followed by an apprenticeship with internationallyrecognized artist Paul Harmon. Olivia opened her LIVASPENART STUDIO in 2006 and LIVASPENART GALLERY on Cooper Avenue in Aspen, Co in February 2011-October 2013. She is a painter (known for her butterfly series begun in 2008), art consultant, songwriter and mom. A full time Aspenite since 1997, she spends as much time as she can in the mountains and taking in all the enriching programs Aspen has to offer. livaspenartgallery.com; Livaspenart@me.com

Meet the Man,

P
olo Player. Philanthropist. Entrepreneur. Animal Advocate. The list of titles and accolades for this acclaimed Polo Player go on and on. But Nic Roldan is a perfect cocktail of beauty, brains and brawn, a juxtaposition that makes him popular on the field and off.
He was blessed with model good looks, but counters it with just the right amount of muscle and tats to make girls swoon and guys like him too. He may make being one of the most talented and highly ranked polo players look easy with his fighter pilot calm, but polo is no joke: it is one of the most dangerous sports there is. Nic must stay disciplined and feels the burn with a rigorous fitness schedule to keep him strong, lean and mean. His polo playing affords him the life of a rock star, galloping across the finest cities in the world and mingling with celebrities and royalty. For Nic, time off the tour means quality time with a close knit circle of friends, family, and other pursuits. Rolling Stone. Polo affords Nic the opportunity to spend time each year in some of the most fabled places of the world (London-Palm Beach-Greenwich-Aspen to name a few), and he is stoked about returning to Aspen this winter for Aspen Snow Polo, and spending some summer time with the Aspen Valley Polo Club. This year’s 4th Annual World Snow Polo Championship

LIFE
The Aspen Valley Polo Club, created by the Ganzi’s approximately five years ago, is the newest addition to the summer polo tour, and one of his favorite places to play. Always advocating for his sport, Nic works hard to demystify polo and its “sport of kings” moniker, and make it more accessible to everyone. With that, the club has its own Polo School that runs all summer long with classes for children and adults throughout the week. “Every year we are growing with new members and students. It’s become a huge hit and we hope to see it grow more and more.”

was held December 16th - 18th in the heart of Aspen, and was nothing short of magical. “It’s a really special event” Nic tells me excitedly. “It hosts some of the best players in the world and has become a huge hit. It’s a totally different experience to playing on grass but a lot of fun! Mark and Melissa Ganzi took it over a few years back and we have been competing for five or 6 years now. It’s the best way to end the year and roll into the next.”

He Gives Back. Although his prowess on the polo field is what he is most known for, he’s a modern day Renaissance man with interests beyond Polo, including working with charities near and dear to his heart. A favorite is his role as ambassador for Brooke USA, originally founded by Dorothy Brooke to help unfortunate equines left mistreated and abandoned after serving in World War One. “The Brooke is the largest equine welfare organization in the world committed to improving the lives of work horses (mules and donkeys) across thirteen of the poorest countries of the world. They have reached over five million animals worldwide and the numbers are increasing.” “Philanthropy is something very important to me, and the world in
general needs more philanthropists. I am super lucky to be able to work with a few closest to my heart: The Brooke Foundation which helps our dearest equines. I also work with two local charities in my home base of Wellington, Florida; the Kids with Cancer Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club. We all need to give back and if I can use my name, the sport of polo and my connections in any way to help, support, or raise awareness and funds for these charities I will.” He has Brains Too. Nic, who is super passionate about real estate and design, has started two business ventures that he hopes to continue as he gets older. Bedford Park Real Estate Investment Group is a company he started three years ago with two close friends that focuses on building turn-key equestrian facilities. The other biz, Roldan Designs, a

joint venture with his interior designer mom Dee, focuses on flipping houses. “It’s always fun to work on projects with her; her style is so unique and different, mine very moderncontemporary. The contrast has worked really well.” Nic at Night. Surely having such a demanding schedule calls for time to unwind, and for the most part Nic likes to keep it relaxed and chill. “I live with one of my best friends so cooking at home is likely (he laughs at his own joke). Most of the time we eat out, or do dinners at some of my other friends’ houses. We are a very close group and stay together most of the year. If we go out we go to Palm Beach or Miami, which is always fun!” Romantic Roldan. Sorry ladies, for Nic Roldan may be a player in a sport, but he’s a gentleman. When I ask Nic about his personal life, he doesn’t kiss and tell. “All I can say is I am in a relationship and super happy.” And with a glint in his eye we said adieu and he rode off to seize the day. That’s just how he rolls. That’s just Nic. u

has me laughing in seconds. He’s just back from a trip to New York, a successful show (9 of 12 drawings sold) for Sarah Graham on East 76th street. Her Japanese Ink works are front and center at Maximillian which also has quite the wingspan with the longest window square footage/frontage of any gallery in Aspen. Albert and I met on a plane to Art Basel in 2006. I was stunned he recognized my painting featured in a publication. I was stunned he spoke to me at all. He has been an inspiration to me and many of the artists living in the lucky ville of Aspen while trying to stay connected to the world at large. He is a young legend. Galerie Maximillian celebrates its
20th year thriving in Aspen in June 2017. Keeping a gallery successfully open in Aspen for this many years is nothing short of a miracle and Albert’s story of his entry into art dealing begins unfolding, equally miraculous. I tape every word. Age 16, Albert pounds the streets of Paris, green Guide Michelin in hand, exploring art museums. Insatiable. He purchases his first piece - a 19th century color lithograph by Jules Cherét. He skips lunch at his pensiôn saving pennies (francs) to buy more. His mom was a compulsive shopper, dragging him from store to store as a little boy, instructing him to sit quietly and patiently while she tried on the latest fashions.
WINTER 2016
ART He admits that if he had 11 fingers they could be tattooed “BORN TO SPEND”. “I love buying and selling art!” Albert exclaimed. 1979, still just a teen, People Magazine features him, a young art collector/dealer, a prodigy. “Collecting and dealing art are the only things I’m qualified to do along with mopping and changing lightbulbs,” said Albert. Every good gallerist is the self-prescribed chief bottle washer.

Albert’s collection, please note - he owns every single piece hanging in his gallery, are his children. He cannot and will not stratify the importance of each one. Born from a passion for the esoteric medium of original printmaking that began with purchases of full 4-color lithograph advertising posters from the 1870’s and 80’s as a young boy studying abroad in France, he says he has not taken nor will, the “easy road” of selling paintings and sculptures.
ART Original printmaking inspires him and fits his passion for conversation between collector, work, process and art history. Sales of 19th century posters paid for most of his college. Strong schools - Middlebury, then a Junior year turning 20 while at the famed Institut D’Etudes Politiques. He has remained intoxicated with the dialogue art creates, with connecting people to art. We talk about how the art world has changed. The confluence of artists, authors, poets, publishers. The creative melding of art, commerce and literature which began with surrealism in the 20’s and 30’s (ultimately a literary movement). Mind you I am staring at a Miro as we speak. Sadly, he says today art has become a fascination with WHO is this artist, WHAT is this going to be worth, is this the NEXT big deal? I ask very humbly knowing he shows work by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso along with a carefully curated few up and coming contemporary artists, “Albert, who has staying power?”. He answers, “Damien Hirst - he is one of the most provocative, profound and globally influential artists of the 20th and 21st century….and he’s clever, a creative business man. He’s not going anywhere and his retrospective at the Tate Modern was the most highly attended in its history.”
WINTER 2016
Albert is in his element, his “playground,” each piece he surrounds himself with and sells is literally one he would and does own himself. He found his wheelhouse at a young age and then the perfect match of location to live it and make a living with it. He began visiting Aspen, with his girlfriend, now wife Dorothy Wildman, in 1990 who had owned a townhouse here since 1973. Galerie Maximillian opened its doors in June of 1997. “Aspen has given me the amazing opportunity to become who I am,” he said. In return he has become a “community partner,” currently serving on the boards of Anderson Ranch and The Buddy Program among many others over the years. He has fallen in love with mountain biking, scars to prove it and the ultimate challenge of up-hilling. His first ascent of Aspen Mountain on skins brought him tears of joy. Fundamentally a self-declared nerd not a jock, his physique now shows his earned athleticism. His brain power is equally astounding. The Aspen Idea - mind, body, spirit is alive and well in this gallery and man. Backing up his footsteps, his currency of art collection and brilliant grasp with his love of art, of the narrative. “We are so lucky to live in Aspen,” he cheers. We are the lucky ones, lucky that he landed here and every day sits amidst his visually delectable collection, bought to sell, to share. Tactile conversation at its finest. u

A VOCALIST ON THE VERGE RETREATS TO ASPEN FOR A VIP PERFORMANCE
I
Written By Amanda Rae
t’s the first powder day of the season on Aspen Mountain, and Tess Marie is in her happy place. We’re soaring high in the gondola, perhaps the most exclusive venue in which a singer-songwriter will ever perform. When she breaks into a soulful, a cappella rendition of “Lean on Me,” the polycarbonate around us reverberates subtly. A third cabinmate and I grin, likely sharing the same thought—Tess Marie is going places.
Today, though, she’s here. “I love it in the mountains, the air is so crisp,” coos the 27-year-old, Minnesota-bred, Los Angeles-based, Swedish-Czech artist over mimosas at the Sundeck. “It’s an escape—a reset. You get so caught up in the music industry and playing the game. It gives me a boost, creatively.” A vocalist in the vein of Sia, Jessie J, and Ellie Goulding; pianist with an eye toward showmanship à la Lady Gaga; and independent spirit influenced by Kiesza, Banks, and Grimes—Tess Marie is poised to ride the next wave of EDM: futuristic house with disco-funk vibes, tropical elements, and live vocals and instrumentals during sets. “Weightless,” her breakout 2015 song in collaboration with DJ Shytsee (a Swedish House Mafia contemporary), hit the iTunes Top 10 in Germany; Tiësto played the track at Las Vegas’s Electric Daisy Carnival in June.
Indeed, a video filmed this summer at Burning Man shows the five-foot-four, coloratura soprano onstage in a sleek white one-piece, knee-high boots, and long French-braid pigtails, belting out a low register big-time alongside Bay Area-based Jazz Mafia. A bunny-suited reveler bows down to her, literally.
So, she’s cranking: “Worry,” a track for Italian duo Flatdisk (“it has that Bieber Reggaton vibe to it,” she says); a charity project with Anthony Gonzalez of M83 for NASA and the MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, expected to drop around Superbowl LI; and songs for Max Vangeli, Lucas Vidal (Fast & Furious 6), and room4space, aka Emre Senol of Russia. Most anticipated: working with Galactic Marvl, the buzzy anonymous artist releasing original tracks and high-profile remixes with animated videos via Armada Music.
Sikorski notes that EDM in 2017 is trending toward incorporating live vocals, especially during sets. “The industry is bringing in songbirds for fill out these tracks,” he says. “A soulful voice like [hers] is going to be an amazing thing to share with the world.”
Part of Marie’s strength is rooted in the element of surprise. “You see this beautiful, cute-faced, Midwestern blonde, then when you hear her voice it’s like, WOW,” says David Sikorski, a San Franciscobased contributor to Billboard magazine and senior editor of music-discovery site EarMilk. When he met Marie this year at the Gathering Along the Whiskey Trail alt-rock conference in Kentucky, he says, “I did a sonic double-take. Her range was incredible.”
And share it she will. “Music my way of releasing whatever’s inside,” says Marie, who makes her local debut in a surprise performance. Showgoers at the venue are in for an aural treat. “In an intimate space, you can really connect with the audience,” she explains. “It’s on blast—everyone come to Aspen.” Four-and-a-half years ago at a dive bar post‘Cuse graduation, Marie and her now-famous former flame pondered the future. “Drew’s like, ‘We’re gonna make it, Tess. We’re gonna make it. All this other bullshit is irrelevant.’” She gazes from the Sundeck windows as if ready to fly over the Rocky Mountains. Taggart’s prediction may very well turn 100 percent true—and you heard it here first. u
ASPEN LUXURY LIFE
In the digital age of short attention spans and Instagram, though, an artist is only as good as her current track. Momentum is everything; witness the lightning-bolt career of Syracuse University classmate and ex Drew Taggart of chart-topping duo The Chainsmokers. “It’s [about] doing the work and not taking no for an answer,” Marie says.

MAGASIN, A RETAIL TREASURE TROVE
I
Written by Anicia Bragg, Hollywood’s Life & Fashion Style Expert Photographed by Nick Tininenko
t’s that time of year for people from around the globe to flock to the slopes of Aspen for the holidays and what would an enchanting resort destination be during the season without the fabulous over-the-top couture shopping and boutiques?
It will be a who’s-who on the slopes during the day and around the fire pits at night, and arguably the most famous, affluent, sexiest snow bunnies will flock to shop at MAGASIN digging for gold, baubles and exquisite treasures without the selfies, paparazzi or anyone documenting their every move. This fabulous, iconic, playful little boutique offers delicious European Designer Accessories and much more “yessssss, we are obsessed.” We are talking shop with owner, Giselle Leal, Aspen’s Accessories Fashionista, a transplant from the hustle and bustle of New York fashion mecca. Giselle packed up her treasures a few years ago and brought all of her retail gold to Aspen. When asked why she chose Aspen as her new residence and place of business, Giselle says she was drawn to the area’s iconic scenic surroundings and she was excited to explore nature as a source of inspiration. Growing up in a family of women with great style, who all knew how to sew, meant it was only natural Giselle would start designing and creating her own clothing and jewelry. She says her eclectic, classic style was influenced not by specific labels or designer brands, but from the women of her childhood. She now has the benefit of being inspired by the environment in Aspen and feels there is an undeniable connection between nature and jewelry; there are stones and stones! Metals and materials! “Shopping in the woods,” as Giselle calls hiking, provides an endless, ever-changing road of riches to lay one’s eyes upon. Golden Aspen leaves, silvery grey birch branches, slate-colored river rocks, red and blue berries and flora of every color and shape easily transmute into jewelry collections and nudge Giselle down her path in creating locally-inspired accessory designs. Giselle tells me: “The state of nature will show you which colors to wear when.” MAGASIN is open during both the winter and summer seasons. During Aspen’s off-seasons of spring and autumn, Giselle jet sets to Paris and Milan for all the obvious reasons, but she also travels to the corners of the countryside where for the most part tourists are not to be found. In these outreaches, the artists who supply the bigger cities with their wares are hard at work at their workshops and ateliers. Giselle eschews

attending the standard retail outposts of accessory trade shows to travel instead straight to the sources, meeting in person with the designers, who often create pieces expressly for MAGASIN. It is this process that invigorates Giselle: “Collaborating with designers to create one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t find elsewhere is an incredibly rewarding process.”
MAGASIN Owner: Giselle Leal
Giselle strives to keep true boutique culture alive, and at MAGASIN, it is thriving under constant evolution. What began for Giselle as a vintage clothing shop has morphed into a fabulous jewelry store that has now established itself as Aspen’s coolest accessories boutique. This season will see an expansion into accessories for the home and other must-have items from abroad such as 100% all-natural cold-pressed Argan oil and wholesome rose products from Bulgaria. u
ASPEN LUXURY LIFE
The clientele in Aspen is discerning, and MAGASIN’S carefully curated collection is the place to find accessories with meaning. “In Aspen, they already have it all or they tend to make conscious purchases. I love this way of thinking, this approach to consumerism~ that each purchase should be meaningful and purposeful in your life. One’s jewelry, particularly, should embody these qualities. Your jewelry is your treasure trove. With regards to jewelry, there is no reason to acquire the mass-produced. Your jewelry can, and should be, personal and unique to you.” Giselle passionately states. This is not an alienating statement; luxury can be found at price points varying from $60 to $6,000. There is something for everyone at MAGASIN.
61
“MAGASIN is a tiny shop, but we carry lines that you can’t find anywhere else in the United States. So I feel very confident standing behind the lines I carry, because I saw them being created,” Giselle proudly states. She says sourcing her lines and meeting the designers in person has always been a little like going down the rabbit hole. Giselle; “I see a cool girl in France wearing a killer piece of jewelry and she invariably tells me it is hard-toget, but I live for the hunt!” Giselle spends weeks at a time following her leads to a cowboy in Spain cutting his own leathers to a tiny town in the south of France to discover a husband-and-wife jewelry team, setting each stone of their rings by hand. “It is a luxury to spend so much time in a place in order to discover emerging designers as well as others who, because they choose not to mass-produce, will not be found far beyond their radius,” Giselle says. She buys her scarves in Paris from the longest-operating scarf business in the Marais, where the shop owner tells Giselle the stories behind every scarf design, as well as juicy tidbits about his dealings with the major luxury design houses for which he also creates scarves. Giselle is privy to a constant education from her connections and insider-secret-whispering; in addition to presenting these fabulous finds, she has the inside scoop story to share with her customers.

very publication in the country has pages laced with photos of the happy smiling family gleefully sitting at a table enjoying their holiday dinner. Unfortunately that’s not reality for most of us. Whether you drew the short straw or welcome the challenge of hosting the family holiday festivities, this can be the most stressful time of the year. While I can’t promise to help you recreate grandma’s green bean casserole, I can help ease the anxiety of picking the appropriate wines to appease the masses. I’ll start by saying that there is no perfect wine. The name of the game is to be all things to all people. These wine options that I recommend are the same wines that I use when throwing an event for family and esteemed guests alike. Pick a nice champagne from a classic house. While grower champagnes are great, they don’t carry the esteem of the great old house like Moet et Chandon or Ruinart.
3. For the red wine, I like to select a riper old world wine. Jamet Cote Rotie, Quinterelli Valpolicella, Chateau Rayas, Lopez de Heredia Rioja and Aldo Conterno Barolo. These wines are great examples in their categories and even your friends with new world palates will be appeased.
CREDITS......
4. Offer either a dessert wine or mulled wine after dinner. Mulled wine is a very fun and wholesome end to the meal and complements most desserts. If you are looking for a more traditional approach to an after dinner drink I enjoy Hungarian Tokaj, Coteaux du Layon or a classic Sauternes. I hope that this is helpful. In the case that all your plans implode and you choose to dine out on these occasions, come see me at The Little Nell. I’ll be the bald guy serving wine at element 47, wearing a smile! u

2. Select two whites; something fresh and something a bit richer with a touch of oak. For the fresher selection, I think a nice single vineyard Sancerre like Cotat works well. For the richer selection try one of the great Lieu Dit bottlings from a good producer in Meursault. Roulot and Genot-Boulanger are two great producers.

HEX & THE CITY, OF ASPEN
I
f you know anything about Aspen, Colorado you’ll perhaps have heard of the ancient American Indian curse that was struck upon the Pitkin County valley. The Utes and the Payutes hexed the magnificent terrain to trap anyone who comes to visit, and somehow beguile them so they will never want to leave.
While this didn’t work out quite so well for the original natives, the effect from the curse does show up and has affected many, myself included. More than a few times I’ve gone for a weekend and stayed indeterminately long stretches. This is a common effect on the vacationers and travelers who turned up. Many people will tell you the same. For example, one Jodi Larner. All those years ago, Jodi went looking for a change of pace from the predictability of her east coast existence and she forged out west. Aspen spoke to her and it became her new home nearly immediately. The natural beauty and the mellow flavor of the locals caught Jodi unawares, as if perhaps affected by the Ute curse, and now coming up on nearly thirty years Jodi is still very firmly in place. When Jodi first got to town by luck she met Chris Lanter who was another outsider himself, and who had also been pinched by the curse. He came and he stayed. By the time they met, Chris was two years into

running a bistro he had named Cache Cache (yes that is French, and it’s pronounced just how it appears, ‘cash cash’).
Jodi has an amazing work ethic, and the truth is Jodi deeply cares and the results are evident.
This year, 2017, the restaurant will turn twenty-nine and fitting celebrations are already in preparation. This is a major landmark for an industry famously fickle and tricky to manage. But Jodi is not only a perfectionist workaholic she is also well known and well liked. You can drop her name from coast to coast and the response will be identical, “I know her! I love her! And I love Cache Cache!”
The main room is a soft white genteel setting and always full and bustling. You’ll need a reservation during the season, for sure. Flawless food and well informed (and noticeably handsome) waitstaff make for a good time, every time. The average patron is likely wealthy and won’t mind the vertiginous prices, but a good trick if you need one is to sit and eat at the bar. Twirl on your high stool and consume your yummy meal and banter with the bartenders.
Soon after meeting, Jodi and Chris were ably running the eatery together. A seamless team, not a romantic entanglement, they operate this restaurant with a great deal of heart and love and the clientele are loyal in return. That loyalty due largely in part to Nate King, Chef de Cuisine, whose culinary brilliance has for 10 years brought to light that which is the magic your palate experiences with each and every bite at Cache Cache. Those bites complemented and perfected by the consummate professional, Alex Harvier, Cache Cache’s world class sommelier who is passionate, knowledgeable and can sell wine in five languages. Alex has been in the restaurant business from a very early age, beginning with his father in Paris, now pouring 12 years of Cache Cache excellence.
I’ve had many delicious meals here. In my real life, I cleave to a Spartan diet, which could mean a bag of Cheetos (not puffy), but in a good restaurant, for example Jodi’s, I generally transform into an all-out carnivore because the steaks are too good to pass up. Never fear, obviously, there’s something for every palate including vegetarians and the notoriously fussy, all requests obliged within reason, and as is well known the establishment prides itself on an extensive wine cellar. Jodi and Chris have reaped the rewards of their relentlessly hard work and they have every intention of ticking right along.

DINING An excellent example of the curse where people ‘just don’t want to leave’, a detail perhaps unknown to Jodi or Chris and which I have no intention of telling them myself, is that the infamously handsome waitstaff engage in wild Greco~Roman wrestling, after hours. Or so I’ve heard. I hope you get yourself to Aspen, and when you do I hope you find your way to Cache Cache. You’ll be glad you did, and you’ll leave fat and happy and just maybe you’ll find you want to linger a little longer when the Indian curse touches down on your face in a snowflake.

See you at the bar for a round of celebratory clinking of the drinking. A toast to the restaurant and another for the Utes and Payutes, who may themselves be ignominiously gone, have the satisfaction of repeatedly proving they weren’t wrong, because no one wants to leave. Carry on Cache Cache and congratulations for a score of fabulous years and all the best for another twenty-nine to come. u

Hotel Jerome A landmark in Aspen, Hotel Jerome, an Auberge Resort, began a new chapter in its storied history when it unveiled an extensive renovation in December 2012. Aspen’s favorite gathering place welcomed guests back with Prospect, an American bistro; a relaxed new Living Room bar and lounge; a new Auberge Spa; and the legendary J-Bar, which is lauded as an Aspen institution. The hotel pioneered new levels of innovation and luxury when it opened in 1889 at the height of Aspen’s boomtown silver-mining era and is often described as Aspen’s “crown jewel.” Hotel Jerome’s 93 rooms and suites offer stunning mountain views. Hotel Jerome was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. 330 East Main Street; 970-920-1000; hoteljerome.aubergeresorts.com

PIERRE/ FAMILLE
“CELEBRATING OUR FIRST 30 YEARS”
ASPEN LUXURY LIFE

WRITTEN BY JOANI WHITE & PHOTOGRAPHED BY NICK TININENKO
A
nyone that has visited Aspen over the past 30 years has more than likely strolled by one of the most luxurious storefronts nestled on Cooper street in the heart of town and marveled at the breathtaking jewels and captivating collections that have inspired, tempted and charmed even royalty.
For the owners Donald & Judi Stone Aspen was not their first choice of where to set up shop, either was the name Pierre/Famille. They arrived at using this name from the French inspired translation that auction houses would refer to their existing name Stone & Family, a blend of each of their last names, Judi Family & Donald Stone. Originally the first storefront was located in the fashionable shopping district of Cherry Creek in Denver, where they were selling antique, estate and rare period jewels. A waiter at a neighboring delicatessen where the owners frequented would remark quite often how Aspen would be the perfect location for them, not only because of the jet set and international crowds it was known for, but for the lifestyle it could provide. In 1987 Aspen naturally became the backdrop for their second store location and the allure of the town and all it represents quickly became home for them. When asked about what had drawn them to Aspen Judi was quick to point out how much she loved the informality of the town, natural ruggedness and unrivaled beauty of the mountains mixed with the surprising ability to maintain a sense of privacy. These compelling combinations still hold true today for them. Although skiing is not a high priority or pastime as with many of the winter guests that descend upon the town each season Judi takes great pride and enjoyment in equestrian training and feels

connected with the harmonious spirit of Aspen.

A crowning jewel in their career was procuring one of the most iconic and significant Cartier pieces which is now part of a permanent museum collection. Much of their personal inventory on display

As with most tourist driven towns Judi and Donald have seen many challenges and rewards throughout their first thirty years of doing business here in Aspen. Of course, the seasonality is the biggest challenge but they offset slower months with trunk shows and acquisitions made on behalf of private clients that have come to know and trust them for their spectacular and unique pieces that can be worn every day or for special occasions. The rewards are the fun part and Judi shared several special moments that she fondly recalls including once setting up the storefront window display with an engagement ring purchased by a gentleman with a sign saying “will you marry me?” As the couple stopped to window shop after dinner the stage was set for a quite memorable wedding proposal. Thankfully she said “YES!” That is where the true joy and passion lies remarks owner Judi Stone. Helping to guide clients with commitment and enthusiasm so that the recipient of the gift and giver will connect with what they have selected and receive a lasting memory from Aspen and Pierre/Famille along the way.

Pierre/Famille carries a vast array of unique precious jewelry as well as a wide selection of fashionable objects, rare and fine watches, cufflinks and other desirable items with prices ranging from a few hundred dollars up into the millions. For the discerning gentleman that might be drawn to a one of kind Rolex or a prestigious collector of Patek Phillipe the owners and staff will certainly be able to guide you with knowledgeable expertise. And if you just cannot find anything that suits your fancy in the storefront window you may decide to have something special custom created while collaborating with Pierre/Famille’s in-house design team that equal the standards associated with major houses such as Harry Winston, Van Cleef, Tiffany or Cartier. 2017 marks the 30-year anniversary of Pierre/Famille in Aspen. Here’s to the next thirty years. u
ASPEN LUXURY LIFE
When asked what the criteria a typical client would be searching for Judi immediately mentioned there really is no such thing, however, the common thread is that they all seemed to ultimately be enticed to select that unique one of a kind piece to enjoy and be worn rather than remain in a bank vault. Everyone is treated with the same respect that comes through the doors of Pierre/Famille whether it is just to admire or ultimately purchase. Of course, over the years there have been celebrities and other notable clients including royals with endless budgets but privacy and discretion has and will continue to remain the standard of doing business from the jet set elite to the equally valued local customer. Much of their international business comes from online transactions and private showings including many devoted collectors from Asia where they have personally hand delivered precious items.

in the store and online is highly curated and comes from selections discovered on buying trips to Europe, participating in auctions (both buying and selling), obtaining estate collections, and from designs that they have co-created with master jewelers that showcase brilliant diamonds and other colored gemstones in settings that complement each unique stone.
