HANDSOME GEORGIAN HOUSE “a proud and elegant property” Fairbourne Court, Harrietsham - £1,250,000 This is a proud and elegant property with distinctive William & Mary architectural influences dating the house to the early eighteenth century. Looking back across its own lake and trim lawns the Wisteria fronted house has a charming elevation of Flemish bond brick incorporating blue brick headers and a symmetrical fenestration of narrow-bar sash windows. Inside, the house doesn’t disappoint with a regular interior arrangement of rooms that provides accommodation of equally good proportion with a central hall leading to two large principal reception rooms, each with tall ceilings and notable original features including fine period fireplaces and window shutters. The kitchen has a curious central supporting timber around which is a farmhouse kitchen incorporating a large four oven aga and ample dining space. There is also a sizeable office leading off the Dining Room and a useful 4

family room to the ground floor with a central lobby leading to a rear porch. There are four bedrooms to the first floor filled with light from the large sash windows together with a bathroom and en-suite facilities to the main bedroom. The second floor is approached from a winding back staircase and leads to a useful suite of three eaves rooms each with a dormer window giving some attractive views and use of a bathroom to this floor. The house has been saved from excessive modernisation over the years and with opportunities such as this becoming increasingly rare, the whole now lends itself to a sensitive restoration of what is a handsome and sizeable property.

ragstone walls identify an area of parking along with a detached ragstone stable and dairy with channeled flagstone floor and a pegtile roof.

This is a compact estate comprising a proud principle residence situated midway within its grounds overlooking a three quarter acre lake. A gated formal entrance to the front of the house sweeps along a gravel drive giving parking and access to the barns beyond. Behind the house is a gated courtyard where

The grounds are divided between areas of lake, formal garden, parking and paddock with the paddock measuring about an acre. In all, the grounds amount to 2.75 acres overall.

Away from the house and elevated slightly on the western bank of the lake is a two storey ragstone building and a further ragstone building sits behind it. A number of additional open front store barns line the North West boundary. With the ragstone outbuildings totaling over 3000 sq.ft of space, there is excellent scope here subject to planning and Listed Building consent to adapt these to a variety of uses.

AC160 - Sheffield Park House Edit_Aspect County 13/12/2011 12:04 Page 10

HISTORIC APARTMENT “beautifully presented accommodation” 3 Sheffield Park house, Fletching - £895,000 John Baker Holroyd, later Earl of Sheffield, purchased Sheffield Park in 1769 and in about 1775 the architect James Wyatt undertook major alterations to the house and around this time the grounds were laid out by Capability Brown. During the 1896 Jubilee Edward VII as Prince of Wales stayed with The 3rd Lord Sheffield at Sheffield Park occupying the Tyger Room, as a result also now known as the Prince’s Room. In 1954 the estate was broken up and The National Trust acquired much of the grounds and lakes. Apartment 3 is situated in the most fantastic location within the building. It has beautifully presented accommodation, arranged over the first and second floors of the house and benefits from some fine architectural features such as the magnificent ceiling in the Tyger Room and ornate cornicing. Next to the hall is a cloakroom and utility cupboard. The drawing room/Tyger Room is beautiful with a marble inlaid fireplace, believed to date from the late 18th century and to be Irish in origin by Bossy, and the ceiling by Charles Catton R.A. incorporating a blend of superbly painted and naturalistic animal studies of lions, tigers and leopards with a suggestion of Gothic fan vaulting at the corners. There is also a lovely bay window with shutters, an oak floor and 8

gold painted embossed dado rail. The sitting room is elegant with a massive leaded light window overlooking the garden, a fireplace with cast iron reeded surround and marble slips. French doors lead out onto a substantial paved roof terrace with superb views. The second floor has a delightful principal bedroom with bed platform, exposed timbers, oriel window, walk in wardrobe and a lovely en suite bath/shower room. There are 2 further bedrooms, one of which is currently used as a study and has a fitted desk unit. The family bath/shower room is also well appointed. The drive to the house, flanked by metal railings, sweeps through the parkland to a turning circle in front of the house. Apartment 3 has a garage, cellar and use of the house’s gardens with its lawns, fountains and borders of azaleas and rhododendrons. The apartment has shared use of the 2 tennis courts and about 30 acres of parkland as well as direct access to The National Trust gardens. GRADE II MAGNIFICENCE “provides elegant and grand accommodationâ€? Nash Court, Faversham - ÂŁ2,500,00 Nash Court is entered from the Canterbury Road, though impressive Grade II listed stone piers with railings to either side. A long winding drive, flanked by park railings, leads up to a large parking area beside the house. Constructed of red brick under a slate roof, Nash Court is a magnificent Grade II listed house that provides elegant and grand accommodation over three floors. It is now in need of updating and modernisation. Beneath a pillared entrance portico on the east side of the house double doors open into the impressive entrance hall. The hall has splendid marble flooring and ornate ceilings of the highest quality. To either side are a splendid suite of reception rooms, with similar period features, ornately plastered ceilings, and magnificent fireplaces. The ballroom or drawing room has a triple aspect overlooking the gardens and the former park, with long distant views over the surrounding countryside. Adjacent are the smaller sitting room and billiard or dining room. These three principal rooms interconnect and provide for large scale entertaining, whilst retaining a comfortable family feel. 16

ASPECT COUNTY

| PROPERTY

An inner hallway lies behind the library, and gives access to the dining room which is of equally generous proportions as the ballroom, and like the other rooms enjoys fine views. The principal rooms have direct access to a gravelled path that runs around the east and northern side of the house via large French windows. The grand principal staircase is lit by a large stained glass window and rises from the reception hall to a galleried landing from which the six principal bedrooms are accessed. These all benefit from similar proportions to the reception rooms below, and they enjoy the finest views. There are three bathrooms, a separate cloakroom, laundry room and three further bedrooms. A second staircase descends to the rear hall. The second staircase continues to the second floor. There are seven large rooms and a long gallery which have been used for storage in recent years, but could be adapted to provide additional accommodation. Adjoining the rear of the mansion, and once a part of it, are two flats. These could readily be reincorporated into the main accommodation if so desired.

Lying to the west and north of the house, the gardens are mostly laid to lawn with a great variety of mature trees and herbaceous borders. Intersected by pathways and planted with roses and other flowering shrubs and plants, there is a great variety of spring colour provided by the underplanting of spring bulbs. A little further from the house, the walled garden houses the tennis court and swimming pool, which are both now in need of refurbishment. There is a four bay garage to the south of the house and a smaller two bay garage serves the annex. The Former Park lies to the front of the house and extends to about 19.7 acres, and is currently arable farmland and pasture; it could be replanted as a park. There are three adjacent paddocks extending to about 2.02 acres in all. For more information contact Strutt & Parker on 01227 451123 or visit www.struttandparker.com.

gardens are neatly arranged with raised lawns leading on from a paved yard immediately behind the house. Overall this is a most appealing central village house which with its convenient and accessible setting offers an enticing opportunity. The house was commissioned in the mid Nineteenth Century for a wealthy North Kent business owner. At this time, the house was known as Beaufort House. It was transferred into the ownership of the pastor to the neighbouring chapel at around the turn of the last century, where it remained in his ownership until its sale to the ‘Young’ family,

who held the property until 1954. During the War years, the Youngs were evacuated to the Isle of White. To keep the house in order, a villager was employed to act as housekeeper. On the Young’s return the housekeeper purchased a small neighbouring cottage and named it ‘Beaufort Cottage’. Incensed at the inferior property taking the name of her treasured house, Mrs. Young removed all name plates and evidence of the name from the house, amending the name to ‘Niton House’, after the village on the Isle of White where she had stayed, and the house has been known as Niton House ever since. The house was sold to the ‘Cardwell’ family in 1954 where it remained in that family until November 1977 when the current owners took over the house and as only the fifth owners of the house also became the first occupants to reside here from outside of the village. MADDOX ARTS WINTER SHOW Maddox Arts has opened its winter group show comprising ten artists working in a range of media including painting, drawing, silkscreen prints and photography. Bringing together twenty works, produced mainly between 2010 and 2011, the show is arranged in pairs of two, reflecting each artists’ individual artistic production. English painter Paul Freud, Venezuelan artist Lucia Pizzani and filmmaker and watercolourist Clement Page introduce their works for the first time at Maddox Arts. Freud presents a triptych depicting distorted figures set against a flat, austere background. Similarly, Page shows two monochromatic watercolours portraying blurry subjects and landscapes. Pizzani present us with two photographs of orchids encased in oval frames alluding to Victorian times and the taboo associated with such imagery. A varied selection of works by previously exhibited artists also accompany the show including Kobuke’s cherry wood panel drawings of mythical creatures, Mikael Alacoque’s resin sculptures of skull-headed canines and Farley’s silkscreen prints depicting gorillas encrusted with diamond dust. Gallery artists such as Cipriano Martinez

and Rafael Reverón showcase works derived from close observation of the architecture and psychology of urban and intimate environments. Peter Griffin and Emilia Sunyer, by contrast continue to use abstraction as a vehicle to express complex human emotions. Paul Freud is the first son of painter Lucian Freud. He studied Sociology, Psychology and Art at Putney and Wandsworth College. He trained at Camberwell College of Art in 1991 and in 1995 graduated from Goldsmiths with a BA in Fine Arts. Selected solo shows include “Stepping Out Of The Shadows” at GGGallery in London; “Paul Freud e i suoi ritratti espressionisti” at ASSOCIAZIONE CULTURALE CASSIOPEA in Rome and The Drawing museum, in Laholm, Sweden. Paul Freud lives and works in London. Lucia Pizzani graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design with a MA in Fine Arts in 2009. Additionally, Pizzani received a Certificate in Conservation Biology from Columbia University in 2002. Selected group shows include MOLAA Collects Photo-Based Art at The Museum Of Latin American Art in Los Angeles; The Drop Exit Art in New York and “Queens International 06: Everything all at once” at Queens Museum in New York. The artist lives and works in London.

Clement Page studied Fine Arts at Cheltenham College of Art in 1990 and Critical Theory/ Fine Art at Goldsmiths in 1992. Selected solo shows include "Hold Your Breath' film/related watercolours at Kuckei & Kuckei Galerie in Berlin; 'Film & Drawings' Austrian Cultural Forum, Berlin, Germany; ‘Watercolours’, E31 Gallery, Athens, Greece, ‘Films and watercolours’ - Exprmntl gallery, Toulouse, France, ‘Tiny Pain’ film installation, Galerie 15, Cologne, Germany. Page lives and works in Berlin and UK. Kentaro Kobuke completed his MA in Fine Arts at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2009. Solo shows include “Zou no oto” at IMYU gallery in London; 'Parfait' at SCAI The Bathhouse in Tokyo and 'Names' at AAA Gallery in Paris. The artist's works were also exhibited in 2010 at the Saatchi Gallery as part of Highlights from the Franks-Suss Collection. Kentaro has collaborated with Comme des Garcons, Isetan and Loope Wheeler and Isetan and Yoshida Kaban among many others. Kobuke lives and works in London. The Winter Show is open until 20th January 2012 at Maddox Arts, 52 Brook’s Mews, London.

HEAD OF LEARNING AT TURNER CONTEMPORARY WINS AWARD On Tuesday 15 November, Karen Eslea, Head of Learning at Turner Contemporary won one of four inaugural Marsh Awards for Excellence in Gallery Education, presented at a special evening event run by engage, the National Association for Gallery Education. A commitment to learning lies at the heart of Turner Contemporary, who believe that learning, is a lifelong process which does not finish when you leave the education system. For that reason the ground breaking Learning Programme at Turner Contemporary encompasses schools, community group

projects and regular activities for families. Karen has been working closely with local people for over ten years in the run up to the opening of the gallery in April 2011. She says ʻmy role has been to ensure that local people feel involved in the development of the gallery, and see it as a valuable resourceʼ. Over 690,000 people have been involved in the work of Turner Contemporary before the gallery opened. To date over 300,000 people have visited the gallery since opening, with over 14,000 people engaging with the Learning Programme.

‘I am really proud to have won a Marsh Award for Excellence in Gallery Education. It is a privilege to work for Turner Contemporary, and to develop projects with the local community. We know that we have a positive impact on people’s lives, and working with artists and people of all ages is endlessly interesting and rewarding.’ – Karen Eslea, Head of Learning Turner Contemporary Four exceptional individuals were recognised for their dedication and contribution to making the visual arts more accessible to all. Jane Sillis, Director of engage, said: ʻWeʼre delighted to be able to celebrate the achievements of colleagues in our sector. “Gallery educators are essential to making sure the widest possible audience can get involved with art and artists. “The volume and standard of nominations for these awards show just how dedicated people working with audiences in galleries across the UK are.ʼ The engage conference is hosted by Turner Contemporary. The theme is Work in Progress and is set against the backdrop of the regeneration of Margate, in which Turner Contemporary plays a critical role.

AC160 - Jerwood Edit_Aspect County 20/12/2011 17:03 Page 1

OLD TOWN RENAISSANCE “Hastings was the perfect place for the gallery” The keenly anticipated Jerwood Gallery in Hastings will open its doors to visitors in March 2012. Designed by young architectural practice HAT Projects, the Gallery will house the Foundation’s collection of 20th and 21st century paintings, which will be on public display for the first time. The Gallery is part of a landmark £9million redevelopment of the Stade, a historic area in Hasting’s Old Town, home to Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet. The £4million gallery, for which the capital and running costs will be entirely funded by the Jerwood Foundation, is seen as an important catalyst in the cultural and economic regeneration of the area. The Jerwood Gallery is part of a masterplan for the landmark location of the Stade in Hastings. The Gallery will provide the permanent home for the Jerwood Collection and a new regional venue for the Jerwood Visual Arts Programme, which comprises of some of the most prominent visual arts awards in the UK. It will establish Hastings in the ‘string of pearls’ of prestigious cultural attractions along the South Coast, which includes the Turner Contemporary at Margate, the Folkestone Triennial, the Towner in Eastbourne, De la Warr Pavilion at Bexhill and Pallant House at Chichester. Alan Grieve, Chairman of the Jerwood Foundation said of the project: “This is the culmination of the initiative to make a new home for Jerwood’s collection of 20th and 21st century art and place it in the public domain for the first time. Hastings is linked with a number of artists featured in the collection. With its rich history and strong, ever-expanding artistic community we felt that 28

Hastings was the perfect location for the Gallery.” The Jerwood Gallery will open with the UK’s first retrospective of the works of Kent-based artist Rose Wylie, who has just been awarded the 2011 Paul Hamlyn Prize for Visual Arts. Rose is no stranger to the Jerwood Foundation, having been shortlisted for the Painting Prize in 1997 and featuring in the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2003. Liz Gilmore, Director of Jerwood Gallery said: “We are delighted to celebrate Rose Wylie’s contribution to painting through our inaugural show. Rose sets the direction for all our future exhibitions: to recognise creative talent and nurture what is most significant and important to both artists and visitors. The contemporary programme will complement Jerwood’s Collection of Modern British Art, which itself is live and growing and a source of inspiration for artists today.” As the new home of the Jerwood Collection, the Gallery will feature work by British artists from the 20th and 21st century. These include works by well known artists such as Sir Stanley Spencer RA, Lawrence Stephen Lowry RA, and Augustus John OM, RA, alongside works from winners of the Jerwood Painting Prize, Craigie Aitchison, RA, Maggi Hambling OBE, Patrick Caulfield and Prunella Clough. The Gallery will take on both regional and national significance as the venue for many of the exhibitions that run through the Jerwood Visual Arts Programme. This currently includes the Jerwood Drawing Prize, Jerwood Contemporary Makers, Jerwood Contemporary Painters and the Encounters Series, a sequence of smaller, cross-

disciplinary shows. These exhibitions show the best emerging artists from around Britain, and are widely recognised as a place to discover ‘rising stars’ in contemporary arts. HAT Projects’ design for the Gallery has grown out of a response to the particular requirements of the Jerwood Collection and the character of the site. The building sits among the unique Hastings net shops, on the edge of the working fishing beach, and the exterior is clad in over 8000 black ceramic tiles, hand-glazed a few miles away in Kent, which reflect the changing seaside light. The emphasis on sustainability is exemplary, with the building creating 60% less CO2 per m2 than an average museum of a comparable size. It houses a range of gallery spaces from intimate rooms through to a dramatic 180m2 gallery for the temporary exhibition programme.. In line with Jerwood Foundation’s firm belief that arts and education are intrinsically linked, the Gallery will benefit local communities through outreach activities and by enabling its use as a resource for local schools, colleges and community groups. The Jerwood Foundation has been involved in a number of projects in Hastings leading up to the Gallery development. The Foundation sponsored both the Hastings’ Sea Angling Festival in 2010 and 2011 and the new Sussex Arts Prize at the Sussex Coast College in July 2010. Plans are now underway for an ambassador programme involving a young representative from every school in Hastings and film collaboration with Project Artworks, which will capture the uninhabited Jerwood Gallery in a way that provides poetic and intimate insight into its spaces.

15TH CENTURY RING FOUND IN KENT SOLD IN BONHAMS A rare 15th century gold iconographic ring found by a metal detector in Stanford, Kent was estimated to sell for £4,000 – 6,000 in the Fine Jewellery Sale which took place at Bonhams on the 8th December 2011. The ring was a dream find, having remained hidden for 600 years below layers of soil in the Kent countryside, untouched by the perils of centuries of farming. The surface is composed of three slightly concave rectangular panels, depicting the Holy Trinity and the Annunciation. The design continues to the twisted shoulders engraved with rays of light, flowers and the inscription 'En Bon Foie' (In Good Faith). Iconographic rings incorporating devotional images with inscriptions were popular throughout the 15th century and found only in England and Scotland. Such rings, representing scenes such as the Trinity, Christ, the Virgin and favourite saints with their attributes, are believed to have been given as gifts at weddings and at New Year. www.bonhams.com/jewellery

LOVE IS... For Valentines Day Paula MacArthur, a professional artist working at The School Creative Centre in Rye has had one of her silkscreens printed by Artswipe London, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Artswipe are publishers of limited edition prints, and Paula is excited to join their stable of innovate artists which includes Urban Artists Snub 23, Agent Provocateur, Ben Oakley, Maria Rivens and Damien Hirst’s nemesis Cartrain. Paula’s recent series of silkscreens are inspired by love. ‘Fluorescent Love’ is based on a neon sign given to her as a gift one Valentine’s day by her husband. It is a powerful image and has been produced in various colour ways each adding it’s own subtle nuance to the subject. ‘Fancy Cut’ is one of an ongoing series of prints and paintings of jewels, each depicts a gemstone; the enduring symbol of love and romance. All silkscreens are hand printed by the artist on traditional 100% cotton, mould made paper and are available directly from the artist. Paula MacArthur became increasingly involved with the London art scene last year. She has been a regular exhibitor at The Cultivate Gallery in Vyner Street, recently described by Jessica Lack in The Guardian ‘as a thriving centre of the art scene’ and she is currently exhibiting until Jan 3rd 2012 as part of ‘Urban Curations’ in Netill House, Westgate Street, London E8. Paula says “It seems odd spending so much time back in the East End of London; only seven years ago I escaped the stresses and strains of urban living and came to live in Kent; I often feel like a tourist when visiting 30

London now, but that makes everything that’s been happening even more exciting. Now I have the best of both worlds.” It has been an extremely busy year for Paula, since she moved into her new studio on Christmas Eve 2010 she hasn’t looked back, “Since I moved in I haven’t stopped, this year has flown by! Almost as soon as I’d unpacked two of my large canvases were selected to be exhibited at The East Sussex Open at the prestigious Towner Gallery in Eastbourne, I was chosen from over 130 submissions to be part of this fantastic regional showcase, this was a great start to the year.” Soon after this Paula was invited to be part of the “What the Folk Say” exhibition At Compton Verney in Warwickshire which ran from March to December 2011. She says “It is a huge privilege to be part of the exhibition alongside Sir Peter Blake (one of my big heroes) and Turner prize winner Jeremy Deller as well as lots of other fantastic artists and curators.” Ted Baker London asked Paula to work with them to create designs based on old vinyl records. A beautiful notebook, address book and record bag have been produced and are available now in John Lewis and Ted Baker stores across the country. Paula was delighted to hear from one of the sales assistants that “they’re selling like hot cakes!” To see more of Paula MacArthur’s prints and paintings go towww.67contemporaryart.co.uk or you can contact the artist for a studio visit at paulamacarthur@me.com

NEW WINTER ART EXHIBITION The Nigel Greaves Gallery in Eastbourne Following the highly successful autumn exhibition at the Nigel Greaves Gallery, we were eagerly anticipating the new works destined for the winter exhibition. Nigel was pleased to show us another stunning collection of harmonious and beautifully serene seascapes, landscapes and some fabulous abstract works that make up the exciting new winter exhibition at his lovely gallery behind the Grand Hotel in Compton Street Eastbourne. A lover of light on nature, he orchestrates a highly colourful palette that finely reflects the solidarity and energy of his compositions. The beautiful and richly coloured works that make up this exhibition are a must see. His paintings are real enchantments of colour, the moods and places are sometimes familiar while others are purely imaginary but always alive with vibrant realism thanks to his bursting palette of high quality pigments he imports from the south of 32

France. This latest collection has once again, been created to be uplifting and as always, seems to be more comprehensive than ever before. This delightful new exhibition runs in tandem with Nigel’s retrospective exhibition until the start of the summer exhibition in May. Those of us who love original art and are wishing to purchase works for their home, office or for a present will find a broad array of interesting and affordable subjects to choose from in the new winter exhibition. Nigel’s paintings are always dominated with tones that exhale a mixture of brilliantly colourful surfaces – reds, yellows, blues and oranges all in rich textures that work together to form a beautiful picture that pleases the eye of all those who love to discover natural beauty. His generous use of high quality pigment and an experienced understanding of

light can be seen to bathe scenes in a tranquil unreality that we sometimes wish to be real. The joy of nature is symbolised by his sometimes imaginary locations where he likes to represent scenery in a timeless and often reclusive serenity. Nigel Greaves was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1994 and studied fine art, art history and graphic design under Robert Tavener at Eastbourne College of Art and Design. HOLIDAY BY RAIL A selection of some stunning holidays over three continents There are many iconic train journeys that you can choose from, but probably the most well known are Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Cape Town, South Africa, The Indian Pacific from Perth to Sydney, Australia, and The Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver, Canada. South Africa’s huge and varied landscape is wonderful to see, and what better way to do it than by train! You can choose between the elegantly restored Rovos Rail , or The Blue Train’s 5* luxurious, renovate carriages. Departing from Cape Town, you travel via Worcester, Hex River Valley and Matijiesfontein to Kimberley, where you can visit the Big Hole Diamond mine, and museum. Rovos Rail travels by day, and you stay overnight for 2 nights in the vintage coaches, with fine wood panelling and period Edwardian features. With attentive service, excellent meals and superb South African meals, this journey is an unforgettable experience. These rail trips can be combined with safaris in the Madikwe Game Reserve, looking for the ‘Big Five’ as well as an extended stay in Cape Town. A visit to the Kruger National Park can be added, as well as a trip to Zambia for another iconic rail trip on the Royal Livingstone Express, with dinner and drinks onboard. The Canadian travels between Toronto and Vancouver, via the Canadian Shield (a wild land of lakes and trees), and Winnipeg, the Gateway to the West where you’ll have the opportunity for some sightseeing. Westwards from Winnipeg, you arrive in the province of Saskatchewan, followed by a brief stop in Edmonton. Then begins the excitement of a climb into the Rockies, watching glaciers, lakes, canyons, waterfalls and glorious peaks rising into the sky from the Observation car. You arrive into Jasper, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, and then continue west to Kamloops, finally getting to Vancouver in the morning. Vancouver has a fantastic natural setting with beautiful mountains and fjords providing a natural backdrop to the modern city skyscrapers. It is easy to add more days here so that you can visit Vancouver Island, take a further train to Whistler, or even join a cruise up to the Alaskan glaciers! No trip to Canada would be complete without seeing Niagara Falls, so we suggest that you take some time before your epic train journey to explore Toronto and the Falls, taking a trip on the ‘Maid of the Mist’ and capturing some unique photographs – and memories. Australia has three epic train journeys – The Indian Pacific from west to east coasts, The Ghan (from Adelaide to Darwin via Alice Springs) and The Sunlander (from Brisbane 34

ASPECT COUNTY

| LEISURE

to Cairns). All of these cover great distances, with a choice of luxury sleeper cabins or reclining seats, airline style and all serve great food, and excellent Australian wines. The Indian Pacific travels between Perth and Sydney. You pass through the coastal belt, the outback town of Kalgoorlie, see lots of desert and quite a few kangaroos, before arriving into the sleepy garden city of Adelaide. Then on into the New South Wales outback, and iconic Broken Hill, before reaching the spectacular and cosmopolitan city of Sydney. This was recently voted as the ‘best city in the world to live in’ – and you are about to find out why! Several days here would be great, to experience the ferries, climb the Harbour Bridge, and tour the Opera House. The Ghan leaves Adelaide and the beautiful coastal strip, and travel north to Coober Pedy, home of the Opal mining in Australia, and on to Alice Springs. There you can break your journey for a visit to the Flying Doctor service and School of the Air, or even travel to Ayers Rock for a few days, and pick up the next train when it continues on to Katherine and Darwin.

A lot of desert on this trip, but good company, great food, and Australian wine all help to make the time fly. The Sunlander travels between Brisbane and Cairns, travelling along the wonderful Queensland coastline for a large part of the way. As well as beaches, you’ll see sugar cane, pineapples and banana plantations. On arrival into Cairns you can visit the World Heritage rainforest at Cape Tribulation, snorkel or dive on the Barrier Reef, or take the steam train up to Kuranda on the Atherton highlands. Any (or all) of these trips can be added as part of a longer itinerary, or even a Round the World tour. NATURE - AN UNNECESSARY COST TO SOCIETY? ‘Economic growth should not be achieved at the cost of our natural life support systems’ says Dr Tony Whitbread, chief executive officer of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, the county’s leading conservation organisation. Dr Whitbread has voiced his exasperation at George Osborne’s autumn budget statement which includes plans to review the rules which protect some of the most important nature sites in England. He said, ‘the Government’s own National Ecosystem Assessment and Natural Environment White Paper, both published in June 2011, promised much more than this. They were to herald a change in nature’s fortunes. And Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) are a key part of the foundation upon which nature recovery across England will depend.’

‘Yet taking England’s much depleted wildlife into a more positive future is clearly far from the Chancellor’s agenda. To go down in history as the Government that kick started nature’s recovery means maintaining the long fought for protection for England’s richest wildlife sites. ‘The Sussex Wildlife Trust is well known for taking a pragmatic and constructive stance in its dealings with developers and local authorities on the ground and with the national Government. George Osborne’s approach now risks driving a wedge between developers and conservationists, at a time when we should be co operating more than ever.’

Dr Whitbread continued ‘It seems the Chancellor is not content with the massive shake up of the planning system that is already under way and which initially failed to even recognise Local Wildlife Sites. Now sites and species of European importance face an uncertain future in England.

Dr Whitbread continued ‘At a time of recession we should look to the long term. For example, the coalition Government during the Second World War placed nature at the centre of post war reconstruction and some of our greatest nature conservation initiatives stem from that period. Even during one of the worst economic climates of the twentieth century the government was able to build a positive future for the natural world.

When will the Government recognise that our natural resources are finite?

‘How different today when nature is presented merely as an unnecessary cost to society.’

END OF THE LINE FOR TRAIN COMMUTE Recognising that crowded trains and irritating delays can make the West Kent to London commute a literal nightmare, Centaur Commute is announcing the launch of its new Tunbridge Wells and district commuter coach service to London. Unlike the ravenous 'every man(or woman) for himself' experience of taking the train, users of the new road service will be treated to a guaranteed reclining seat in clean and air conditioned coaches, as well as the most important and often overlooked experience, friendly staff! Matthew Sims, Managing Director of Centaur Coaches & Minicoaches, explains why he feels the new service will send trains sulking down the tracks...

Nowadays, as commuting has become so much more challenging, many passengers are fraught with the on-going need to switch from a train to the tube or bus. Centaur have researched where people travel to, and incorporated pick up and drop off points around them – rather than making them work around the transport system. The new route has also been designed to pass two free car parks close to Tonbridge before joining the main A21 dual carriageway. For Tonbridge residents it's a short drive, or walk, across the A21 bridge - a free car park; and the benefit of joining the coach just before it picks up the fast A21, thus making it a really quick

journey to London comparable with the Tonbridge train and, of course, a lot cheaper. The new service officially takes to the road on January 30th but the company have announced a number of trial services throughout January, plus the opportunity of some free seats! With almost 70 pick-up and drop-off locations, the new Centaur Commuter service from Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding area looks set to become the most convenient, comfortable and economical way to commute to London. To find out more about the service, visit: http://www.centaurcommute.com

“We've spent a lot of time listening to customers and finding out everything that is wrong with the London railways commute from the Tunbridge Wells area and have set to work to fix it” says Matt. He continues, “For example, we examined costs and are able to offer big savings to commuters of up to £1000 a year and more. Unlike the trains, we have also incorporated many pick-up and drop-off points at key locations which, in many cases, will mean that passengers will not need to get on buses or tubes upon arrival into the capital to reach their workplace.” LOCAL NEWS |

LUXURY-FAMILY-CRUISE-TOURING Tailor-made holidays will make your break special For the early months of the year two personal favourites are El-Gouna and Taba Heights in Egypt. Both offer great locations with excellent beaches and are exceptional value for money. Although Egypt has had and still has some problems these places have been unaffected. El-Gouna is built on a series of lagoons and islands and has a fabulous Marina. It is a great place to spend an evening at one of the open bars or choose from one of the wide selection of Restaurants. During the day there are great opportunities for snorkelling or diving, and if you can drag yourself away from the beach you will find a championship 18 hole golf course. If you want to go further afield excursions are available to go to Luxor, giving you an opportunity to visit the Temples of Karnak and Luxor plus the amazing Valley of the Kings. Taba Heights is situated on the Gulf of Aqaba and has a great selection of mainly 5* Hotels, all with excellent facilities for both families and couples. When you wake up in the morning, from your Hotel you can see Jordan and Saudi Arabia with Israel not too far away. This is certainly the place to go if you are looking for a relaxing holiday. However if you want to travel a day out to Petra is a remarkable experience and you will also have an opportunity to visit the famous St. Catherine’s Monastery. Snorkelling is available locally with one hotel even having its own snorkelling centre. For the more active there is a nine hole golf course or the chance to go Quad biking or go through the Canyon on a Jeep Safari.

I am very pleased to have been asked to write some articles on travel over the next few months, not only to give an insight into some of my favourite locations but also to give you advice so that you can get the most out of your holiday.

years to come. In the current climate financial protection has never been more important and virtually everything I do is fully protected, giving a peace of mind to my customers that is sometimes missing when booking independently.

For many years travel has been a hugely important part of my life and I still get a tremendous buzz when I am on my way to the Airport or Port as I look forward to new experiences, especially when I am on my way to somewhere I have not been before. Choosing the destination is half the fun, although the travel market can be so confusing with the wide array of choices available. The Sunday Papers are full of suggestions, as is the internet, and it’s hard to sort out the genuine offers and the good destinations, and most importantly the offer that will suit you best.

In the coming months I will be covering a wide range of destinations. In addition to the traditional holiday I will also be looking at Short Breaks, Escorted Touring Holidays and Specialist Trips, and I will also be looking at the luxury end of the market for the people who want to splash out and celebrate in style.

For the past nine years I have put my past experiences to good use and have been running my own Independent Travel Agency. This gives me the flexibility to do the best I can for my clients in negotiating the minefield of choice and availability, and to put together holidays that are remembered for 38

Whilst talking about Egypt, this is a good time to consider a Nile Cruise. Last year I looked over several of the Nile boats and although many were excellent the one that stood out for me was the Nile Premium. The cabins were spacious and all the public areas were great to relax in. The price of the cruise will usually include all the daily excursions and this is a great way to experience Ancient Egypt. Starting from Luxor you will have an opportunity to do a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings which is a tremendous way to start the day.

The fastest growing sector of the travel market is both the Traditional Cruise market and River Cruising, both of which offer exceptionally good value. However with cruising I always feel that it is just as important to find a ship that suits you as it is to get the right destination. Although Cruising isn’t suitable for everybody, provided you get this combination right you will have a great time.

For something a little different try the Gambia. It’s only a 6 hour flight and offers a great chance to have new experiences with a choice of river, beach and bush excursions. Home to a stunning variety of birds, the early morning excursion along the river Gambia is amazing, and even if you are not particularly interested in bird watching this is such a unique experience. The culture and friendliness of the Gambia is quite unique and all this can be enjoyed from one of the many luxurious hotels on the quiet unspoilt beaches.

At this time of the year there is nothing better than to find some sunshine to lift your spirits and you don’t even have to go too far to find a great spot.

AC160 - La Cour De Remi - Cindy Edit_Aspect County 13/12/2011 14:24 Page 10

LA COUR DE REMI Written & Photographed by Cindy-Lou Dale Just on an hour’s drive south of Calais, wedged in between Le Touquet and Arras, in the historic Somme valleys, is Chateau Bermicourt. Built in 1826 the ancestral Chateau served as the HQ for the Royal Tank Corps in the Great War; and during WW2 it was occupied by German forces. Although the Chateau is still a private residence lived in by the young de La Borde family, its outbuildings have been developed into a trendy 10-roomed hotel and restaurant. Enter the estate through the Chateau’s imposing wrought iron gates, then half way up the drive turn left towards the old stable block. Facing the hotel building, in the gravel car park, with views of the Chateau, is an immense sycamore tree showcasing a spacious ‘tree house’ room, complete with bathroom, television and an elegant terrace and just beyond the lofty tree is a two-bedroom cottage ‘La Maison de Flore’. The hotel building has a 40

stone archway which connects the two huge barn conversions. These offer accommodations and a restaurant and face one another across a lawned courtyard. All but for the UPVC windows and doors, the conversion has been a sympathetic one, providing most modern-day creature comforts. Chateau Bermicourt has been in the de La Borde family for generations. Now its future rests with Sebastien who, after attending a Parisian catering school and converting the Chateau’s out buildings, took over the running of his family’s estate in 2005, leaving behind city life and a promising sporting career. The dining room, adjacent to the small reception, behind a glass door leading off the courtyard, was packed with locals and resident guests alike. The contemporary interiors are minimalist with a concrete floor, brick walls, metal framed tables with wooden inlays,

comfortable leather chairs, with views of both the enclosed courtyard and the vegetable garden, paddock and sometimes Chef Sebastien gathering herbs.

completed the meal perfectly. That Sebastien has earned La Cour de Remi a gastronomic reputation is evidenced by the rapturous sounds of approval at neighbouring tables.

A waiter carried over the black-board menu which, after ably translating for my benefit, appeared to offer interesting dining options and at a set price of €30, great value too. The menus change frequently, the waiter explained, depending on what Sebastien brought back from the local market.

The interiors of each room are individual. Room 7 for instance is a fabulously large suite with plenty of space. Although minimalist in style it ticked all the boxes - large sofas, a wonderfully comfortable bed, a modern bathroom with two facing baths, flat-screen television with satellite, quality bedding, a mini-bar and a Nespresso machine for some decent coffee.

We feasted on cream of pumpkin soup for starters, monk fish as our main, with a selection of seasonal vegetables and creamy mash potatoes; and for dessert, chocolate and chicory mousse. The ingredients were wholesome and cooked to perfection, the portions generous and not overly embellished – and the recommended wine, Roussette de Savoie Marestel, a floral, honeyed dry white,

Views across the vegetable garden and paddock beyond from the breakfast room are something to behold; especially on a cold wintery morning, with sunshine streaming in through the tall windows. Breakfast was a selection consisting of warm-from-the-oven buttery brioche, nutty bread, home-made jams,

slivers of cheese, cured ham, freshly squeezed orange juice and locally sourced yoghurt and possibly the best coffee in France. Peaceful with rustic charm – this is a fabulous find in Pas de Calais, with plenty to see and do in the area. It has all the characteristics to be an idyllic location for a rural break, and within easy reach of the Eurotunnel. Room prices start at €85 per night; suites and the tree house are €160; the cottage rate is €140. La Cour de Remi 1, rue Baillet 82130 Bermicourt Tel +33-3-210-33333 www.lacourderemi.com LEISURE |

AC160 - Beech Court Garden and Tea Rooms Edit_Aspect County 20/12/2011 15:22 Page 10

SOMETHING FOR SPRING Beech Court Gardens will open on 17 March Surrounding a 14th century farmhouse this informal garden is truly a garden for all seasons. Spring heralds a fine show of rhododendrons, azaleas and viburnums which give way to climbing roses in June. The summer months bring herbaceous plants and an impressive collection of blue and red hydrangeas. At all times the garden is framed by many varieties of rare trees including Acers, firs, pines, Kalopanax and the tallest Eucryphia in Kent. The autumn tints are classical and trees provide an ideal habitat for birdlife including nesting sites for a pair of Barn and Tawny owls, Kestrels and migrating varieties which the gardens are renowned for. Visitors can also visit the nearby Challock Church which was rebuilt in the 13th century and is famous for its murals. The murals in the Chapel on the left were painted by Rosemary Aldridge and Doreen Lister in 1953 and depict the lives of the patron saints Cosmas and Damian, Christian doctors and vets in 4th century Syria. The murals in the Chancel, ahead and around the altar and choir, were painted a few years later by John Ward R.A. and Gordon Davies. These show the Annunciation, Nativity, Wise Men and Shepherds, set in a local landscape. John Ward 42

Opening from Saturday 17 March 2012 visitors to Beech Court will be able to enjoy early spring colour and a wonderful choice of lunch and tasty home cooked meals in the cosy Oast house tea rooms. The gardens have a Disabled Silver Access Award, the tea rooms and toilets also have suitable access for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. The site where the gardens are now found dates back to Saxon times, suggested by the discovery of Roman swords and artefacts. The house itself, which is not open to the public, dates back to 1415 but visitors can see the unusual shaped windows known as Dering windows from the gardens. The story behind the name connects to Mr Dering being chased by the Roundheads, and being a slim build he was able to escape through a window of this shape, the Roundheads were unable to follow him. He lived to tell the tale, so after his marriage to the beautiful maiden he was visiting he changed all the windows at his estate in Pluckley to this interesting shape.

Put into the bain marie* and bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes or until firm. Check after 30 minutes, and if it appears to be browning too fast, cover with foil. 5. INTERNATIONAL CHEF EXCHANGE Sharing Culinary Knowledge and cooking styles In autumn 2011 food writer Andrew Kay visited the beautiful Dutch city of Maastricht to experience their food festival. Whilst there he stayed at the Beaumont Hotel where he dined in style on food cooked by chef Audrey Eussen and her team and drank fabulous local wines. It was an experience that he described as; "...one of the best meals I have had in many, many years. I was dining alone and I really wanted to be able to share the food with someone. It was right there that I had an idea. What if I could persuade the hotel in Maastricht to swap chefs with one based in Brighton. Then I could not only tell you about Audrey but tell you that you would be able sample her fine cooking right here in Brighton." It was right there that the idea for an International Chef Exchange, as part of the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival, was born, and now just a few months on the first exchanges will take place in Spring 2012. Harrie Beaumont was prompt in his reply to the request: "We would love to be part of a partnership as we believe that food tourism can be and should be a much bigger factor in Maastricht as it already is. Having the opportunity to learn from each other and exchange ideas should be a great way for both of us to establish this. Exchanging chefs is fantastic! Audrey and we all are very much enthused by this idea. A suitable time period for us would be at the end of April or beginning of May as we are moving towards our 100 years celebration on April first. Please let me know 40

how the meeting went, we would love to be part of this in any way. Best wishes, Harrie Beaumont" Delighted by this response, festival committee members Andrew Kay and Nick Mosley sprang into action and contacted Carla ter Maat of Drakes Hotel in Brighton where chef Andrew MacKenzie is cooking equally exciting locally sourced, seasonal food. Their response was equally enthusiastic: "We are very keen for the exchange. I think is it a fabulous opportunity and look forward to working with you to bring this to fruition." With two chefs already in place two more quickly followed. Rob Carr, Chef at the Hotel du Vin Bistro in Brighton, will exchange with the chef at La Bastide in the South of France based by the vineyards and winery of Chateau Cabezac. Hotel du Vin commented: "Once we heard of the chef exchange idea we jumped at the chance to get involved. We love the idea of sharing culinary knowledge and cooking styles with other great chefs. I can't wait to see what the two head chefs come up with for the gala dinner next April." Philip Lewis General Manager Hotel du Vin & Bistro Brighton With four chefs already sharing their food and knowledge and four delicious food and wine dinners in the planning, the International Chef Exchange should be a huge success and one that will grow in scale. They are already in discussion with a sushi chef in Japan swapping with a local Japanese restaurant!

JANUARY-WHICH DIET TO CHOOSE?

There are so many different and varied diets floating around today that it can be quite difficult to make a decision regarding which one is right for you when you feel it’s time to lose weight. Some diets emphasize low fat while others insist low calories are the way to go. Still yet, other diet gurus are adamant that in order to meet your weight loss goals you must cut out all forms of carbohydrates. One diet seems to combine factors from at least two other well known diets with claims to produce an optimum fat burning weight loss program. Then there are the various other diets that have circulated around the world for years with numerous success stories such as the cabbage soup diet and the cider vinegar diet. Which diets really work and more importantly; which diet is right for you?

One of the most important factors you must consider when contemplating any diet plan is whether you will learn how to eat healthy and nutritionally sound through the plan. Unfortunately, a number of different diets that boast incredible results do so through nutritionally bankrupt methods. Often referred to as fad diets, these weight loss programs encourage you to indulge in eating habits that can do more harm than good.

a weight loss program that can help you to achieve your goals on a permanent basis.

Many weight loss programs promise almost instantaneous results and for awhile at least; it seems as though your weight loss dreams may have finally come true through the presence of this type of diet. Then the sad reality sets in. You realize there is no possible way you can stay on this diet for the rest of your life. This is an important factor to consider; because ideally you should be looking for a healthy weight loss and maintenance program not a diet. Although a very low-calorie, high or liquid diet or even a diet that only lasts for a few days may allow you to initially lose some weight, you will inevitably find that your weight loss problems recur when a vengeance at a later point. Instead of looking for a miracle cure, look for

When considering engaging in any weight loss program or diet, always ask yourself the following questions:

For those of us who would prefer to avoid exercise like the plague, any weight loss program that promises we can reach our goals without that dreaded E word is a lifesaver. Unfortunately, long term weight loss simply isn’t possible without taking part in a sensible exercise routine. Sad, but true.

1. Will I learn to take part in a healthy, nutritionally sound eating plan through this diet? 2. Is this a diet I can stick with long term? and 3. Does this diet combine sensible eating with moderate exercise? When you find a diet or weight loss program that meets all of these conditions, you know that you have found the right diet for you. As with any diet, it’s always a good idea to check with your physician before engaging in any weight loss program.

FOOD & HEALING Annemarie Colbin, in her book, Food and Healing, presents a chapter on altering diet to combat specific conditions. Her recommendations are based on her own experience as a student of macrobiotics and health food, and a teacher of natural healing and balanced eating. As well as her observations of those whom she treated in consultations, and the transformations of her students over the years. Despite her background in macrobiotics and vegetarianism, Annemarie isn't dogmatic about food - she recognizes that what is healing for one person, during a particular period of their life, may not be healing for others, or even for that same person at different stages of their life. She takes as her cue the fact that regular foods have been used for their medicinal value in most traditional cultures. The underlying principle is one of restoring balance. Illness is considered a state of imbalance within the body. And like in homeopathy, she believes that remedies can cause similar symptoms to that which they cure if the symptoms they can cure are not present, and they are taken in sufficient quantity. So, the remedy should no longer be taken once the symptoms of imbalance, the illness or condition, disappears. Otherwise, the remedy may in fact cause similar symptoms to reappear. If this is the case, the remedy should not be taken again, as the remedies are (according to this principle), causing the new 48

| FOOD & DRINK

symptoms. Serious medical conditions she does not rely on food cures for. She recognizes that Western medicine also has its place. But food being what it is, can also be a useful healing adjunct in those situations. One thing that impressed her was food's ability to alter our metabolism quickly. She described this epiphany after cooking a meal for some South American friends, who were used to a diet that was high in protein and fats. When they ate the meal prepared by her, which was high in complex carbohydrates like whole grains and legumes, and low in fat, sugar (for dessert), and low in protein, they found alcohol affected them in a way it usually didn't. The same amount they normally drank, which did not make them drunk with their usual fare, got them quite tipsy on hers.

She observed from this that alcohol, being expansive in nature, balanced out the highly contractive protein and fat they normally ate. These ideas, of particular foods having an expansive or contractive nature, is one that she learnt from the Oriental healing systems she studied. This approach touches on a core difference between Western understanding of both food, and medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine's (TCM). TCM has as its conceptual underpinning, the study of relationships between things. Western approaches, to both nutrition and medicine, are based on a reductionist approach. They explore isolated nutrients, diseases that are studied under the microscope, with a symptom that then suggests possible causes, defined within a narrow and static frame. Ted Kaptchuk illustrates this when he describes how, when he was studying TCM in Macao, one of his teachers was talking about shingles. His teacher described how shingles on the face was different to shingles elsewhere, say, on the trunk. The reason behind this was that "the Chinese view demanded another perspective - seeing the relationship of the symptom to the whole body". (Kaptchuk) he goes on to say: "The question of cause and effect is always secondary to the overall pattern...The total configurations, the patterns of disharmony, provide the framework for treatment."

HEATHFIELD NATURAL GAS Written by Elizabeth Wright It all started with a lighted match and an explosion. Steam engines belonging to the London Brighton and South Coast Railway consumed generous amounts of water as they travelled on the hilly Eastbourne to Tunbridge Wells’ line, and they often needed to take on more fluid at Heathfield. Although the sump at the north end of the down platform was 73 feet deep, the amount of water collected was often inadequate. In 1896 the company decided to drill down to 370 feet in the search for more water, but all that came out of the 6 inch wide bore hole was a bad smell. Legend has it, that an onlooker lit his pipe, and, as he tossed away the lighted match, a great ball of flame erupted, some 16 feet high, as escaping gas from this vast pocket ignited. Numerous damp cloths placed over the tube mouth eventually extinguished the flames. Once harnessed, the gas pressure was so great – at 140psi – that initial efforts to utilise this source of light resulted in ordinary incandescent mantles being blown to pieces. Fishtail burners were more successful and soon the railway station and many houses in the area were being lit by this 96% pure methane natural gas. Surplus gas was collected each morning by a ‘gasman’ who arrived from Tunbridge Wells with a truckload of cylinders to fill. The bottled gas was then sold all over the country. Expectations that there was a commercially viable gas field in Sussex prompted the formation in 1902, of The Natural Gas Fields 50

| WORKING WEALDEN

of England Ltd, with funds of £70,000 to exploit it. Half a mile of gas mains were laid and lamp posts erected. The same year a coin was struck to record the duel events of King Edward VII’s Coronation with the inscription on one side, “Edward VII and Alexandra, Crowned June 26th 1902,” and the first harnessing of natural gas for power and light is commemorated on the reverse “Heathfield, Sussex. 1902. Natural Gas first used for light and power.” Copies made in a light, white metal, with the words on the reverse side, ‘Natural Gas carried me from Heathfield, Sussex,’ were attached to balloons and sent up on Coronation Day. A day later a balloon was picked up near Ulm in Wurtemburg, having travelled 600 miles in 24 hours. A curiously worded postcard was received by a Mr. Inverness Walls, the engineer at the Heathfield natural gas workings, where it was obvious that the balloon’s finder could not read English, as “he had adopted the wording on the medal attached to the balloon as the address on his postcard…..but the card reached its destination and was promptly delivered.” There were dreams of Heathfield becoming another Pittsburgh, where hundreds of factories and thousands of dwellings were being supplied by local natural gas. The boring of more holes into the Sussex Kimmeridge clays, one down to 400 feet, was carried on day and night, the extracted gas supplying both the light and power for the work. The output grew to fifteen million cubic feet a day, and in the deepest hole the pressure was

an impressive 200psi. The Station (Heathfield) Hotel was the biggest customer, but more houses in Heathfield began to use this local gas, although “It was useless for cooking but all right for lighting purposes.” By 1903 more bore holes were being dug around the town in the hope of finding yet more supplies. There was talk of bringing great employment and prosperity to the county by reviving the once successful Sussex iron industry by using this natural gas to fire the kilns, “As America has demonstrated the value of natural gas as an excellent smelting fuel.” ‘The South of England Natural Gas and Petroleum Company’ pursued the idea that an even deeper bore hole could result in obtaining “a large and inexhaustible volume of natural gas and oil shale discovered.” But the supplies of gas did not keep pace with the dreams. The Natural Gas Fields of England Ltd made just £200 profit in 1903 and pulled out in 1904, as did two other speculators between then and 1910. Nearby houses continued to be lit by gas until 1930, when they were converted to electricity, and the diminishing amounts of the remaining gas were packed into cylinders and, due to its purity, sold for experimental purposes to the Safety in Mines Research Board. British Petroleum attempted some investigative boring in 1955, and Esso in 1963, but the gas field had been depleted. By 1965 the gas at Heathfield station had gone, and so had the trains.

OBSIDIAN RETREAT Can Type-2 Diabetics Go Medication Free? Living a medication-free life as a Type 2 diabetic is something that many people are sceptical about, and it's a debate that divides the medical world and dominates the headlines. But a recent front page of the Daily Express 'New Diet Is Wonder Cure for Diabetes', and other national media reports, provides clear evidence that diabetes can be cured through a low fat diet.British guests at a pioneering health retreat are speaking out to confirm they too are beating the odds of a diabetic life and living medication-free on a vegan 'nutritarian' diet. They share their experiences with others - particularly the sceptics out there. Obsidian Retreat is having remarkable results with guests who suffer from Type 2 diabetes, using a vegan nutritarian diet - so called because it is low fat and nutrition rich combined with light exercise. Many have halted or reversed their diabetes and are now living medication-free for the first time in years. Cancer and heart disease sufferers, and those struggling with obesity, say the Britishrun centre based in Spain has also made a significant and lasting impact on their recovery. Many guests at the Obsidian Retreat say their lives have been transformed after embarking on its healthy living programme. Most diabetic guests are beating the odds with a staggering 90% of Type 2 Diabetics either greatly reducing or stopping their drugs, including insulin and Metformin (case studies below). During their stay, guests stick to a specially prepared vegan diet high in micronutrient content. Foods with the highest micronutrient scores are green vegetables, colourful 52

vegetables, and fresh fruits. The diet, which is tailored to suit each person, as the micronutrient richness must be adjusted to meet individual needs, is proven to have powerful disease-protecting and therapeutic effects. So with so many people now suffering from Type 2 diabetes (approx. 2.9 million people in the UK, estimated to rise to 4 million by 2025, at a financial cost to the nation of a staggering £9 billion per annum - about three thousand pounds per sufferer per year), and the International Diabetes Federation estimating that by 2030 438 million of us - or nearly 8% of the global population - will suffer from the condition, which is largely attributed to poor diet, sedentary and stressful lifestyles; the question is why isn't this approach being more widely adopted? Obsidian Retreat's owner Andy West explains: "The link between the poor health and poor diet couldn't be clearer and with a quarter of the UK population (some 20 million) classed as obese this problem is only set to get worse." During World Diabetes Day this month, some alarming new statistics were launched - none more so than the World Diabetes Foundation's claim that there had been a 30% rise in children over the last 20 years and both organisations agree that diabetes is one of the major causes of premature illness and death worldwide. Andy continued: "Our unhealthy eating is costing us all dearly in terms of life quality and expectancy, but we have an approach that addresses this. Applying this approach to diabetes management could save many lives.

We give guests the tools to take control of their own health in a direct, immediate way and the results speak for themselves. We really want people to sit up and take notice of what's being done. "Not only can a nutrition-rich, low fat diet help prevent problems, it can actually reverse even major illnesses and we've already had doctors recommending us to patients." About Obsidian Retreat • Situated just 45 minutes' drive from Alicante Airport, British-run Obsidian Retreat is easily accessible from the UK's three, largest low-cost airlines. • Known as an 'immersion' centre because guests are immersed in their treatment, it is the brain-child of healthy living pioneers, Andy and Carol West, who launched it earlier this year following in depth studies into diets around the globe that have dramatic effects on serious health conditions and a desire to make them available to British visitors year-round for the first time. • As well as personal diet programmes, patients are encouraged to participate in light exercise such as swimming, walking, yoga and rebounding (mini trampolining) and can also enjoy a wide range of complimentary therapies from colonic hydrotherapy, hypnotherapy, Swedish massage, colon massage, crystal massage, bio-resonance, Reiki, metamorphic or Indian head massage; food intolerance testing, beauty treatments and life coaching are all available. AC160 - The BEAT Code Edit_Aspect County 13/12/2011 14:45 Page 10

FOLLOW THE BEAT OF YOUR HEART FOR NATIONAL HEART MONTH February is National Heart Month and British Heart Foundation (BHF) asks the nation to follow its simple BEAT code to take steps towards a healthier heart. The BEAT Code Be active Eat healthily Avoid smoking Take the free lifestyle check It is a common misperception that heart disease affects more men than women. In fact it kills 1 in 3 women, as well as 1 in 3 men and kills three times more women than breast cancer. What better time than in National Heart Month to follow the BEAT code’s simple steps to help keep hearts healthy? Be Active Being active is vital to keeping your heart regularly exercised. Like any part of the body the fitter you are the more efficiently the body works. The BHF suggests setting yourself realistic goals that are specific and achievable. Also involving friends and family will mean that activities can be more fun, sociable and, most importantly, enjoyable.

Eat Healthily What we eat doesn’t only affect our waistlines, what we eat is also important for our heart health. A healthy, balanced diet will provide you with all the nutrients that your body needs. Try to vary the types of fruit and vegetables that you eat and aim to have at least five a day. Cut down as much as possible on salt and saturated fat in foods like meat, cheese, pastry and chocolate. Instead choose the unsaturated fats -for example from rapeseed, sunflower and olive oils and spreads - and oily fish. Avoid Smoking Smoking is one of the major risk factors for heart disease and the habit can damage your heart in a worrying number of ways. But, you can kick the habit! Start off by setting a date for giving up and stick to it, get support from family and friends and use the money you save to treat yourself to something special. Take The Free Lifestyle Check The BHF has developed a free online lifestyle check to help you identify areas of your lifestyle that you may need to work on to help keep your heart healthy. So you can make

positive and significant changes to your lifestyle not only during February but for the rest of your life. The check is quick and easy to fill out and covers lifestyle questions such as your eating habits, physical activity and smoking habits. When you're finished, you'll get a personalised report with tips and support on how to improve your lifestyle and areas that you might want to focus on. To help you get started, you can use the goal setting guide to set realistic and achievable goals. You can keep a copy of your report or even print out a copy for your doctor, in case you want to take it along to your next GP appointment. Or you can call the BHF heart helpline on 0300 330 3311 for support. You can take the lifestyle check regularly as it's a great way to see if the changes you are making are having a positive effect. Show your support for your own heart health and that of your loved ones by following the BEAT and wear red on National Wear Red Day, Friday 24 February. Together with the BHF, help fight the UK's biggest killer and keep the nation’s hearts beating.

SUPPORT FOR THOSE IN TROUBLE Remploy launched London and South East’s first ever Government funded mental health in work support service in December. The Government contract, from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), is estimated at £4.8m and Remploy has been appointed to deliver all of the seven available contracts to deliver Access to Work’s mental health provision, spanning England, Wales and Scotland. This new service will assist more than 1,600 people with mental health conditions to stay in employment. Currently, one in six people

in the UK suffer from a mental health condition at any one time. This equates to 70 million working days lost every year due to mental ill health. In addition to this, staff turnover as a result of employees leaving their jobs due to mental ill health costs £2.4 billion. Remploy’s in work support starting today is completely impartial and confidential, comes at no cost to either employer or employee, can be delivered with or without the support of the employer and is delivered by experts who truly understand mental health. The service will provide a wide range of support for people with mental health conditions for a period of six months and will include: • A work focused counselling service or other tailored work focused mental health support for the individual • Provision of a personalised action plan and exit report

• Employer education • Assessing an individual’s needs and identifying coping strategies • Identifying reasonable adjustments within the workplace or within the confines of working practice Beth Carruthers, Remploy’s Director of Employment Services, said: “If you are absent from work, or are finding work difficult due to a mental health condition, Remploy can now support you to address your issues and remain in, or return to, your role. “We are experts in this field and have been delivering a similar ‘in work’ support package for more than four years. “Creating a mentally healthy and open workplace where employees feel supported enough to discuss their mental health condition will help employers to reduce costs, improve commitment and satisfaction amongst employees, while creating an inclusive and diverse workforce.” Access to Work advisers can be contacted via the following link on the Direct Gov website. For further information about Remploy’s Access to Work Mental Health Service visit www.remploy.co.uk/employmentservices/welfare-to-work/access-to-work.ashx.

AC160 - A Pain Free Shave & A Natural Remedy Edit_Aspect County 13/12/2011 14:48 Page 10

A PAIN FREE SHAVE THIS YEAR? UK based Male Grooming expert Jason Shankey, who launched his unique range of hair and skincare products this year, has now gone one step further by promising men a completely pain-free shave. The Limited Edition 'Perfect Shave' comprises Shankey's three shaving products and his

expert guide to shaving, all packaged together in a gorgeous, masculine box. Shankey, who is a regular contributor to magazines such as Men's Health and FHM, and TV shows including 10 years younger, told us "97% of men suffer from pain, irritation and redness due to shaving, and my unique 'Perfect Shave' recipe utilises our three hero products which

target men's underlying shaving problems, facilitating a quick, painless and easy to follow daily routine". His range of products were developed over a number of years using a hands-on approach, and contain a fascinating list of ingredients which claim to help men's skin to look clearer, healthier and younger. It is available in his four salons, online skincare stores, and it is also in a selection of department stores. From hair growth inhibitors to super exfoliants, the range guarantees a pain-free shave by targeting both the natural and man made processes which cause skin to look red and aggravated, resulting in baby smooth skin with no visible signs of redness. "By slowing down the beard regrowth, men don't need to shave as often. And shaving less often means less scraping of the skin, resulting in better looking skin", he said. Shankey is in big demand from his enviable list of male celebrity fans, who want to look younger and healthier, and his products are in big demand both in the UK and further afield. The Perfect Shave box is priced at £48.00

A NATURAL REMEDY FOR BUMPS & BRUISES We tend to shrug off bumps and bruises as minor injuries, but they can be extremely painful, creating sensitivity and discolouration for weeks. And they are far from glamorous. So what makes some of us bruise more easily than others?

mechanisms, increasing the risk of bruising. Heavy drinkers also have an increased tendency to bruise badly - alcohol also has a blood thinning effect. And of course alcohol also makes you clumsy and more prone to minor injuries in the first place!

It is an inconvenient fact that women bruise more easily than men. This is most noticeable on legs, buttocks and upper arms. This is because women's skin is thinner, and the fat and blood vessels are organized a little differently to men. The dense collagen layer is thicker in men and the blood vessels nestled more securely.

A bruise appears when you injure a superficial blood vessel and blood leaks into the tissues just beneath the surface. The leaked blood appears as blue-black through the skin. The size of the bruise depends on how much blood leaked out before a clot formed to stop the bleeding - the larger the vessel damaged or the longer it takes for your blood to clot, the larger the bruise will be.

In addition to being female, bruising results more often if your skin has thinned from sun damage. Skin also thins as it ages, and an increased tendency to bruise is a common part of the ageing process. As we age the walls of the capillaries in our skin become thinner, allowing them to burst more easily. The skin loses fat and provides less cushioning. A tendency to bruise easily can also run in families. Being very fair skinned does not help, since bruising looks more noticeable on pale skin. Certain medications can contribute to bruising, for example steroids - often taken to help asthma or arthritis for example. Similarly aspirin (and other drugs sometimes used to prevent heart attacks and strokes) can interfere with the blood's clotting 56

So if you whack your previously pristine shin on the coffee table, what can you do to minimize bruising?

- Apply ice for 10 to 20 minutes. This slows the blood flow and minimizes the amount of blood leaking into the skin. - Keep the leg elevated. This also minimizes the effect that gravity has on pooling blood in your legs. Administer ARNICA which is a natural anti-inflammatory that is highly effective on bruises, soothing the pain and helping to prevent deep discoloration. - Weleda offer four great natural arnica options for bumps and bruises. Arnica Ointment (rrp £5.95 25g) is a handy remedy for the family first aid kit - immediate application will help prevent the development of bruising. This natural ointment absorbs more slowly than a cream, to allow for gentle massaging. Weleda's top quality ointment can be absorbed by the skin and won't leave a sticky, greasy residue which is a common problem with paraffinbase ointments Arnica 6X Tablets (rrp £7.95 125 tablets) for accident upset is easily packed in a travel bag or hand bag, and particularly useful if taken immediately after the accident - great for the children's playground or sports ground! A splash of diluted Arnica Lotion (rrp £7.50 50ml) on a cooling compress can help reduce swelling after minor bumps. Massage Balm with Arnica (rrp £9.95 100ml) is ideal for large bruised areas as this fine body oil can be applied gently to the skin, to ease inflammation and soothe the aches and pains or stiffness that often accompany bruising.

GO RED & SAVE LIVES Turn heads, warm hearts and wear red on 24 February for the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) National Wear Red Day.

be used for a Wear Red Day, if you can’t fit it in on 24 February but, if red isn’t your thing, there are other ways of getting involved and sharing the love.

Heart disease kills three times more women than breast cancer(1) but by turning red, you can help the BHF to reduce this number. As part of National Heart Month the nation’s heart charity is calling on Brits to brush down their red dresses, shake out their red locks or even unlock their most precious Louboutins to help raise valuable money for its fight against heart disease.

You can pen the person you love a Love Note for a suggested donation of £1 and have it posted in one of the BHF’s shop windows for all to see! What’s more, any women thinking of taking advantage of the leap year can use the heart-shaped notes as the perfect way to pop the question.

Or buy your loved one a gift such as a Sweetheart Hot Water Bottle or Heart Cufflinks – there is a whole array of heartwarming gifts at the BHF’s online shop. http://giftshop.bhf.org.uk/ Local BHF Fundraising Volunteer Manager, Simon Pykett, says: “There are lots of ways you can raise vital funds during National Heart Month. To find out more and to order your free Red for Heart Fundraising Kit today visit bhf.org.uk/red or call 0300 330 0645.”

A famous fashion designer once said, “When in doubt, wear red” and that’s exactly what the BHF is encouraging you to do. It can be a touch of red for those who want to be more alluring or it could be a full blown outfit dedicated to the ‘emotionally-intense’ colour. By making a suggested donation of just £1, women, men and children around the country will make a big difference in beating the UK’s biggest killer on National Wear Red Day. It’s also a leap year in 2012 which means there is an extra day in February that you can use to help the nation’s hearts. The bonus day could

COUNTERING CHILD OBESITY A shocking 17 per cent of boys and 15 per cent of girls aged two to 15 years are obese in the UK,[1] putting them at risk of serious, long-term health problems. Now a team of researchers are investigating special diets which could help youngsters keep the weight off, thanks to a grant from West Sussex-based children’s charity Action Medical Research. Obesity is not just a problem with eating too much, it is also a problem with the body accurately monitoring and controlling weight. Evidence suggests that a control circuit in the brain, which is responsible for natural weight control, is faulty in obesity. The researchers are investigating whether special diets might correct this fault and help children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity puts children at risk of health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and some cancers. Obese children tend to grow into overweight adults, when ongoing weight problems can restrict activity, damage health and shorten life expectancy.[2][3]

need body fat, but it causes health problems if levels get too high or too low. A control circuit of nerve cells in the brain – called the energy balance circuit –plays a key role in controlling our weight. “If we become overweight, the circuit detects our excess body fat and sends out signals encouraging us to eat less food and use more energy, so that we lose weight. Most children are born with a healthy circuit, but it can become faulty if their lifestyle is unhealthy. Evidence suggests the circuit is faulty in people who are obese,” he said. The researchers, who are studying obesity in a laboratory model, have already discovered that the cells of the energy balance circuit are continually regenerated. It seems that a eating a high-fat diet blocks this process, causing a faulty circuit. The researchers now want to use their laboratory model to study several different types of diet, to see whether any particular nutrients can help repair a faulty energy balance circuit.

Obese children are more likely to suffer bullying, discrimination, low self-esteem and poor body image. This sort of psychological stress can hinder children’s progress at school, damage their friendships and even cause depression.

The diets contain different proportions of key nutrients, such as protein, fat and carbohydrate. Evidence suggests long-term dieting can regenerate the circuit and repair the faults

Lead researcher, Professor John Speakman, from the University of Aberdeen, said: “We

Professor Speakman, is an expert in obesity and ageing, and a world-leading researcher on

nutrition and energy balance in animals and humans. His colleague, Dr David McNay, is a leading researcher in the energy balance circuit and its nerve cells. Dr Alexandra Dedman, Senior Research Evaluation Manager, with Action Medical Research, based in Horsham, said: “The researchers hope to use a well established laboratory model of obesity to study whether certain diets might help fix a child’s faulty energy balance circuit. “In theory, the right nutrition could help the child’s energy balance circuit to work in harmony with their diet and exercise plan to lose weight. This could mean children no longer get stuck in an endless cycle of dieting and rebound weight gain. Instead, they might lose weight and keep it off for good. “Helping children to keep to a healthy weight could decrease their risk of developing serious, long-term health problems and free them from the stigma that often comes with growing up with obesity,” she added. Getting plenty of exercise and eating a balanced diet is the best way to control weight. If a child does become obese, then carefully controlled dieting and special exercise plans can be necessary. Unfortunately, though, rebound weight gain after dieting is common. We urgently need a longer term solution, which helps obese children lose weight and keep it off for good. HEALTH & BEAUTY

2012 STAR SPA Elizabeth Dadson’s stay at Alexander House With the over indulgent festivities of the Christmas season well and truly over, you may find yourself in desperate need of some quality relaxation time in the early part of 2012. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity, among beautifully luxurious surroundings, accompanied by high quality spa treatments, I strongly suggest you pack a small overnight bag and head to the Alexander House Hotel, Sussex, as soon as possible. Set in 120 acres of breathtaking gardens and woodland, this amazingly beautiful spa hotel ticks every single box with regards to sumptuous spa breaks. My husband and I recently treated ourselves to an overnight spa experience at Alexander House. Just a short drive from our residence in London, it was close enough to be a convenient, yet far enough to feel like we were experiencing a country break. As we drove up the gravel drive to the main reception area of the hotel, you couldn’t help but be in awe of this beautiful manor house. Surrounded by vast gardens and woodlands, it presented a perfect winter postcard scene on a cold December afternoon. During a short welcome tour of the hotel, conducted by the lovely Len, we learned that the oldest part of the building in fact dates back to the 17th Century. The hotel has a warm, cosy and welcoming atmosphere, with beautiful high ceilings, original open fire places and delicate detailing everywhere you look. The entire hotel whispers grandeur and luxury in a way that is truly inviting, not intimidating. Our room was situated in the spa side of the building, which apparently was expanded in 2006. On entering, we found it immaculate in every sense. A huge comfortable bed dominated the room, the décor was modern and tasteful, and a quick peek out of the window gave view to a lovely looking hot tub. The bathroom boasted a spectacular roll top bath, and a nice selection of Temple Spa products to sample. The champagne bar can be found on the ground floor, small and quiet, with a large fire place in the centre of the room. The drinks menu offers a good selection of wines, champagne and various cocktails. I can highly recommend the fresh zingy Raspberry Martini’s! If you wish to take advantage of the hotel’s dining facilities you have the choice of AG’s Grill Room Restaurant, which sources the highest quality local produce and offers traditional and modern cuisine. Or you can opt for a more informal atmosphere, and eat at Reflections Restaurant, with courtyard 58

dining and a fire pit for al fresco dining. We choose to eat at AG’s Grill Room, and I can honestly say the food surpassed my expectations. Both my husband and I agree that the Scott Egg appetiser is one of the best things we had ever sampled, truly delicious. Obviously being a spa hotel, Alexander House also offers a huge selection of sumptuous spa treatments and breathtaking spa facilities, all designed to help relax the mind and soothe the soul. The Grecian inspired interiors set a holistic and calming scene. With a vast pool, monsoon showers and an impressive twenty one treatment rooms, this is a spa that really does have absolutely everything you will need to simply relax, unwind and forget about the outside world. I desperately wanted to book a full body massage. Long working hours had left my shoulders feeling as if they no longer mine. Tight, sore and generally achy enough to make

me wince. Quiet clearly I was due a complete holistic overhaul, and my wonderfully talented therapist Sarah, didn’t disappoint. She expertly massaged, rubbed, soothed and rejuvenated every inch of my body, as the elegant scent of warm rose oil filled the room. As the treatment drew to a close, I was tempted to ask if I could simply crawl under the covers and be left to sleep for a while. I was in total heaven. Every aspect of our twenty four hour stay was nothing short of superb, the staff really couldn’t do enough to ensure our stay was an enjoyable one. If there is one spa you should be visiting during 2012 it has to be Alexander House Hotel, for me it’s a star spa and I am already planning my next visit. Overnight spa breaks, including treatments start from £159.00 per person. For more details of day spa options and spa breaks visit the website at www.alexanderhotels.co.uk. HEALTH & BEAUTY |

AC160 - Amanda Waters Edit_Aspect County 20/12/2011 14:48 Page 10

FASHION WEEK DATES CONTINUE TO CLASH After agreements fail to be reached - By Amanda Waters When we are young we are taught our values and morals by our parents, teachers, and extended family, usually along with our religious beliefs. We are taught not to be selfish or prejudiced, to have humility for others and as a democratic nation, taught to “work for the greater good”, thereby putting the needs of others before our own to create harmony. We are given ‘tools’ along the way to help us form opinions and teach us morals. In my case, one of my most memorable ‘tools’ was the novel ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell, which I read at school. As a recap, ‘Major’ the old boar of the farm convinces the other animals that humans are parasites, and when he dies three days later, the two young pigs, ‘Snowball’ and ‘Napoleon’ take over. The animals revolt and drive their drunken master (Mr Jones) from the farm. The seven commandments of animalism were hatched and written on the wall of the barn, with the most important of all being “All Animals are Equal”. I am sure there was a far deeper meaning to the book than I could envisage, but what stood out for me was the struggle for power between the animals, and disregard for the “greater good” of the farmyard, whilst supposedly now living in harmony.

VERSACE - Spring/Summer 2012 Photographed by Simon Ackerman

The world of fashion has become extremely powerful. With the Duchess of Cambridge who is our “Queen of the British High Street”, (never has it been so easy to dress like a Princess) unfailingly flying the flag for Britain, and our ”Ambassador for Emerging Talent” – Samantha Cameron, always sporting outfits and accessories by our brightest stars, along with the glamorous Michelle Obama’s thoughtful wardrobe when she and President Obama visited here this year, (we really were happy to see that she had included - and even arrived wearing) outfits by British designers. (Of course, the Duchess of Cambridge also included garments by American and Canadian designers on her visit to Canada.) There is a feeling that one can almost judge how we are perceived by others, and in turn, how much respect we have for the feelings of others by what we wear, (and if we are lucky, hopefully boost the Economy at the same time!) Thereby bringing us back to the ‘Power of Fashion’. However, with power comes responsibility. With the four main fashion body’s unable to come to an agreement in finding a ‘harmonious’ fashion week schedule which would not conflict for the foreseeable future, it seems that some are flexing their

62

‘muscles of power’ more than others, by their uncooperation. The result of this will not just have repercussions for Britain, but for all. One of the most memorable characters in the novel was the workhorse ‘Boxer’, with the mantra “I will work harder”. We could liken old Boxer to all the Independent Retailers and Department Stores, who are forced to open later and start earlier, just to make ends meet or avoid redundancies because of the current economic climate, and who will now have their buying schedule’s, and ultimately stock disrupted because they will be forced to choose between shows (or even weeks). Boxer could also be likened to all the Fashion Graduates who look up to these four main body’s for guidance and inspiration, whilst they work out where their next placement is going to come from. Or Boxer could even be just the hard-working public everywhere who turn to fashion to brighten their day and have their spirits lifted as the excitement of the fashion weeks grows closer, and the dream of purchasing a new outfit draws ever nearer. Shouldn’t we be showing some consideration to poor ‘Boxer’? With ‘Snowball’ (who had the best intentions of the farm at heart), ultimately driven away by Napoleon’s dogs, ‘Boxer’ eventually works harder and harder until he collapses (and gets deceptively sent to the slaughter house by ‘Napoleon’ in an ambulance, whilst thinking he is going to the vet). With tentative agreements being rescinded, and the kind of bad feeling which has ensued from a general lack of cooperation, the forthcoming fashion week schedules are beginning to look like a chapter from ‘Animal Farm’, with the “greater good” of the Industry disappearing beneath the chaos. It is time for a reality check, and to sit back around the (previously harmonious) table so that we can all get back to business – THE FASHION BUSINESS - and leave the politics to the Politicians. There is still time to reach an agreement, before any ‘body’ morphs into ‘Napoleon’, or ‘Squealer’ - who, lest we forget, completely rewrote the rules of the farmyard to suit his own purposes,by changing the most important rule of all to “ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS”…! AC160 - Roger Edit_Aspect County 15/12/2011 14:44 Page 10

‘TRANSITION’ WITH ERNEST DOWSON Written by Roger Paine A little while to walk with thee, dear child; To lean on thee my weak and weary head; Then evening comes: the winter sky is wild, The leafless trees are black, the leaves long dead. A little while to hold thee and to stand, By harvest-fields of bending golden corn; Then the predestined silence, and thine hand, Lost in the night, long and weary and forlorn. A little while to love thee, scarcely time To love thee well enough; then time to part, To fare through wintry fields alone and climb The frozen hills, not knowing where thou art. Short summer-time and then, my heart's desire, The winter and the darkness: one by one The roses fall, the pale roses expire Beneath the slow decadence of the sun.

As soon as the Christmas decorations have been put away for another year, and festive indulgences subjected to a regime of New Year resolutions, you know that the gloomladen days of January have arrived. These dog-days at the beginning of each year have, over the centuries, inspired poets to express wistfulness for happier times. Ernest Dowson, a contemporary of Oscar Wilde, W B Yeats and Aubrey Beardsley, was no exception. Yet this little known, and even less understood, poet was a major figure in the romantic late Victorian literary world. Writer of many poems, novels and short stories he can also be credited with introducing into the English language such well-known expressions as “gone with the wind” and “days of wine and roses”. Ernest Christopher Dowson was born into a comfortably well-off, middle-class family in Lee, South East London, on 2nd August 1867. Alfred, his father, had inherited the family dry-dock and ship repair business known as Dowson’s, or Bridge, Dock on the River Thames. His mother, Annie Swan, described as a hauntingly lovely, fragile woman, gave birth to Ernest when she was 18 years old. Within a few years, however, Alfred had developed the first signs of consumption, or tuberculosis, as it is more commonly known today. For the sake of his health, the family moved to the warmer climate of the South of France. It was here, and in Italy, that young Ernest received his education from a variety of tutors. Although woefully ignorant of subjects such as geography and mathematics, he became highly proficient in languages, especially French and Latin, and developed a deep love of literature. He entered Queen’s College, Oxford in 1886 but left after two years without obtaining his degree. Many friendships he made there were to last throughout his life.

64

There has never been any suggestion of a relationship between the pair, she later married a tailor and lived above the restaurant, but Ernest’s total infatuation never waned and surfaced in probably his best known poem “Cynara”, in which the last line of each of the four stanzas is “I have been faithful to thee Cynara! in my fashion”. These words became the inspiration for Cole Porter when writing “I’m always true to you, darlin’, in my fashion” in the musical “Kiss Me Kate”. By 1890, Dowson was one of a small group of poets and writers who had formed the Rhymers’ Club. They met every month in the Cheshire Cheese, a long-established inn in Fleet Street. These bohemian characters, Wilde amongst them, gave rise to a movement known as ‘The Decadents’ whose hedonistic lifestyle at the end of the nineteenth century was eventually to be shattered forever by the carnage of the First World War. Ernest, now living a life of late nights, heavy drinking and sexual excesses in the company of various women, also suffered his first attack of tuberculosis. In 1894 his father, by now in an advanced stage of the disease, died of an overdose of chloral hydrate, prescribed to cure insomnia. Six months later, severely depressed by her husband’s death and, most probably, Ernest’s dissolute lifestyle, his mother was found hanged in the bedroom of her home. The coroner’s verdict was ‘suicide whilst temporarily insane’

On leaving university, he joined his father in the dry-dock business. But the new shipyards in the North of England were beginning to takeover from the Thames and smaller docks, like Dowson’s, were finding it increasingly difficult to compete. As Alfred’s health deteriorated, money dwindled and the business was eventually declared bankrupt.

After two such painful setbacks, Dowson’s life began to go rapidly downhill. Although he continued to write, and spent two years travelling in France, his tuberculosis, exacerbated by alcoholism and depression, became steadily worse. Returning to London, almost penniless and living as a vagrant, carrying nothing more than his tattered book of verse, he finally found shelter with friends, Robert Sherard and his wife, who took him into their home. He spent the last six weeks of his life there before he died, aged 32, on 23rd February 1900. Ernest Dowson is buried in the Catholic section of Ladywell cemetery he had converted to the religion ten years earlier - less than two miles from where he was born.

Ernest had begun to successfully write poetry whilst at Oxford but rather than spending time in the squalid surroundings of Bridge Dock, Limehouse, he preferred frequenting the theatres and bright lights of the West End with his friends. It was at this time that Dowson met Adelaide, the 11 year-old daughter of a Polish tailor and his wife who ran a small restaurant in Soho. His allconsuming passion for this young girl, who epitomized purity and beauty, was to remain the love of his life.

In spite of his tragic life, Dowson was a brilliant craftsman of English verse who left behind an inimitable legacy of enchanting words and phrases. His evocative poem, ‘Transition’, published posthumously in ‘Decorations’ in 1900, with its wintry starkness, sense of longing and images of a countryside changing inexorably with the seasons, shows that for all his personal torment and unrequited love he was always conscious of beauty. Not simply in his surroundings, but also in human nature.

AC160 - Zen Inspired Bathrooms_Aspect County 13/12/2011 15:11 Page 10

THE ART OF Zen Inspired Bathrooms The traditional Japanese bathing ritual consists of cleansing the body at a stand alone wash station, followed by a relaxing soak in a deep wooden tub filled with clear hot water. Furniture Designer William Garvey has drawn inspiration from this style of bathing for his iconic Geo Bath and basin. Wooden baths or Ofuros are designed to stay warm for long periods of time and William Garvey's Geo bath has embraced these ideals within its striking teak design. "When we think of relaxing spas or bathrooms within luxury boutique hotels, an oriental theme is often present. The Japanese are masters at languishing in the bath and like to place an Ofuro where the bather can enjoy a pleasing natural view, which adds to the relaxing experience considerably," comments Bill Garvey, designer and director of William Garvey Ltd. Like an Ofuro, the deep-sided Geo bath allows full immersion and an integrated seat allows the bather to relax in a more natural upright position making it more comfortable for longer periods of time. The bath has shorter than standard dimensions also making it great for use in small bathrooms. The use of timber within wet environments is particularly practical, Teak is used extensively in the marine industry because of its durability and the natural oils found within the timber protect it from water, resist marking and allow easy cleaning with household detergents. The design force behind Devon-based furniture-makers William Garvey Ltd is Bill Garvey, whose work is recognised for its simple, pared-down style that enhances the natural beauty of wood, resulting in a signature style that is effortlessly timeless. William Garvey has become a leading authority on successfully using wood in wet situations and the company has built up an extensive product range of baths, basins, sinks and teak tiles. In addition, the company's wholly bespoke service has resulted in commissions for kitchen design and freestanding furniture. Large projects receive the same attention to detail as single pieces and the company has both the skill and the capacity to produce stunning work on a large scale. www.williamgarvey.co.uk Tel: 01404 841430 Starting from ÂŁ3687, including feet and one seat. 70

CREATING BOUDOIR ELEGANCE Elysée - the new addition to the Masterpiece collection There are some who say the Boudoir was born at the end of the 19th Century with the emergence of The Lady's Dressing Room beauty secrets were collected and shared, and more than a hundred years later, the bathroom remains the essential sanctuary of the home.

offset from the vanity unit and with a velvety surface to touch. The furnishings are decorative pieces for the whole house and have a delicate, baroque style. From vanity units to tall cupboards and netsuke scale trinket cases.

Elysée, the new addition to Burgbad's Masterpiece Collection, makes bathroom and bedroom a combination of both a luxurious, lady-like boudoir with the kind of splendour that is difficult to find. Gleaming handles sparkle like diamonds and simultaneously tone down the rigour of the piano-lacquered black fronts. White and champagne-coloured surfaces glisten when exposed to light.

The inner and outer refined covered tall cupboard, vanity unit and sideboard selection is complemented by mirrors with light and full-length mirror with a wide, gold-leaf frame or lacquered in the colours of the furniture and all-round LED lighting.

Classic furniture types are undergoing a renaissance. Dressing tables, cabinets and ladies' or men's drawers have high quality surfaces of gold leaf and glass fronts with inlaid fabric with three-dimensional look and decorated with either ornaments or in gold. The decor flatters the senses and inspires an ambiance of lavish opulence. The Elysée range is almost entirely handcrafted. Distinctive washbasins in six designs have a filigree bowl made of mineral material slightly 74

The illuminated mirrors also have a light strip on their underside for indirect lighting of the washbasin. A matching upholstered stool is the final touch. The motto for the new Elysée range from Burgbad is unrestrained elegance: Delicate, light and feminine washbasins and fine pianolacquered surfaces are created. Each one has up to five lacquered layers applied, dried, polished and a further lacquer coating is applied. This guarantees depth and a soft, even finish. Glass fronts on the sideboard with inlaid Onda gold, a high-value textile that gives a lustrous look.

In an old Stable block on a farm near Battle, Paul Sedgwick designs and makes stained glass windows. After 20 years As a designer in the advertising business, Paul wanted to turn his creative skills to something different. He started to learn the craft of stained glass at evening classes: "It was something I'd wanted to do for a long time, a traditional craft that 90

hasn't changed much in 800 years" So when the agency he was with went bust 10 years ago, a new life started. After a period of struggle that included working on building sites, he soon found his feet doing interior decorating, carpentry and now primarily stained glass. His work is influenced by the sea and the Arts & Crafts movement pioneered

by William morris. "I love working with my hands making beautiful things that will last. In 100 years time I wont be here, but my windows will be, still hopefully giving people pleasure" You can see more of Paul's work at: www.sedgwickstainedglass.com

AC160 - The Winter Garden Edit_Aspect County 13/12/2011 15:36 Page 10

THE WINTER GARDEN Inject a splash of colour into your landscape The festivities are over for another year, and the long cold nights of January and February are upon us. And at this time of year you can’t help but notice that the natural landscape is a little sparse and lacking in colour and vibrancy. Whilst this scene can create strong images with bare trunks and coloured stems there is little else except evergreens to provide us with signs of life and growth. Although many tend to use their garden less in the colder months, it is always important to think of its visual impact all year round. Consider the contribution of colourful barks and how they can inject dimension and colour at this time of year. Colour can enhance moods and create different atmospheres and although can be harder to find in the garden at this time of year do provide a much desired splash of change from the greys and browns which are in abundance. Prunus serrula ‘Tibetan Cherry’ has a beautiful smooth and shiny russet tone which can create a great impact surrounded by the lime of Choisya ternata Sundance ‘Mexican Orange Blossom’. Dogwoods can provide streaks of colour and Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ has intense and vibrant red stems. Cornus sanguine ‘Midwinter Fire’ as its common name suggests, delivers warm orange and pink stems that look like dancing flames in the wind. Each part of the year provides necessary part in the ongoing development of gardens and landscape. Now is the perfect time of year to 92

ASPECT COUNTY

| GARDENING

begin planning your next outdoor project for the warm and welcoming summer months. And inevitably maintenance, whilst not always the most exciting part of the gardeners’ calendar can provide satisfaction and preparation for the bursts of colour in the coming months. The bare landscape allows you to see the true size and dimensions of your space and can provide much easier access for those difficult to reach corners that are generally covered in the spring and summer. If you are starting on a brand new project you can use this time to create inspirational colour boards and look at ways in which you can use different textures, materials, styles, sounds and shapes to enhance your landscape. Plants, hard landscaping and other decorative features contribute to the overall cohesion and design of the garden. You can spend time researching new ideas and schemes that you can bring to life with the start of the spring months. Take time to look at the different patterns that occur naturally in the landscape and on plants, and devise schemes that complement and enhance the surroundings. Take advantage of the time you have now to plan, spring is just around the corner and will provide you with never ending list of things to do outside. Relax in front of the fire with your sketch pad, magazines and books and begin to plan the landscape for your summer. Enjoy!

AC160 - Money Matters Edit_Aspect County 13/12/2011 15:40 Page 10

COULD YOU COPE WITH THE UNEXPECTED? Winter is officially here, the clocks have now gone back and Christmas is on its way. Scary statistics last year from the Department for Transport, showed that in the 12 month period to March 2010 there were 161,850 reported road accidents involving personal injury and of these, 23,440 accidents involved death or serious injury. However, most people believe that it won’t happen to them. As a financial planner this is our busiest time of the year with clients ringing to book appointment’s to review their protection plans. However, I am still amazed when working with new clients because the majority of them will say that they have quite happily protected their cars and homes, but never contemplate protecting themselves in the event of a worst case scenario?

Personal protection is an important part of most people’s financial planning requirements. The financial effects on your family in the event of death or illness could be profound.

Income Protection: this replaces part of your income if you are unable to work because of illness or disability for a short or long period of time.

If you were to die, at the very least you’d want your mortgage, debt and funeral costs to be paid for. You’d probably also want the security of knowing that your family would be able to maintain their current standard of living.

Critical Illness: this provides you with a taxfree lump sum or regular income if you are diagnosed with a serious specified illness covered by the policy.

If you became seriously ill or were injured and had to give up work, you’d also want to be sure that your family could continue to be supported financially. You may decide to use your existing savings and investments, but how long would these last before they run out? Considering protection solutions is a good way to safeguard against unforeseen events and worst case scenarios.

The question I ask is “Why is this”? They must value their cars and home before they put a value on themselves and their family.

These are the basic protection foundations you could set up:

So with new clients I usually ask them this question, “so if protection insurance was free how much you would like” their answers never fails to surprise me. They say “I would take a million or two pounds of cover please”! So for most, it’s always down to cost.

Life Insurance: this provides financial security for your dependents in the event of your death and helps them to pay some or all of the outstanding debts/financial commitments such as your mortgage and other liabilities.

Certain policies should be also written under an appropriate trust to ensure that monies pass to the right people at the right time and in the most tax-efficient manner. If you already have some protection solution in place it is beneficial to review these regularly to ensure that they continue to meet your current needs. Financial Planning should begin with ensuring that you have a secure and appropriate protection foundation in place to cope with dealing with the unexpected. MRA (Mike Robertson Associates Limited) 01424 777156. MOBILE PAYMENTS ACCEPTANCE TO BLACKBERRY AND ANDROID DEVICES In collaboration with its banking partner, CreditCall is launched CardEase Mobile, a mobile payment app that enables businesses on the move to accept Chip and PIN credit and debit card payments on a BlackBerry or Android device. CardEase Mobile is completely secure. It’s been fully tested by UK banks, is EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa) certified, and is approved by Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Uniquely, it incorporates bank-grade end-to-end encryption, ensuring data cannot be compromised at any time during a transaction.

CreditCall Marketing Director, Pete Alcock commented, “There are a number of card acceptance apps emerging at the moment which are clearly non-compliant with UK banking rules, some of which don’t even support Chip and PIN. With CardEase Mobile we have done the job properly and engineered the first solution that meets ALL the current

UK requirements, so as to protect both cardholders and merchants from fraud, abuse and chargebacks.” He added, “As a leader and innovator in this industry, security and compliance are paramount to us which is why no cardholder sensitive data is stored on the smartphone or card reader, and all data traffic is encrypted.”

CardEase Mobile turns a BlackBerry or Android smartphone or tablet, in conjunction with a Bluetooth PIN pad, into a secure mobile credit card terminal which processes both Chip and PIN and magnetic stripe card transactions. Receipts for the transactions are provided by text message or email, directly from the smartphone. Many types of business people on the move can now accept Chip and PIN payments on their mobile phone, without the hassle of cheques or cash. This is providing they own a BlackBerry or Android device, have a merchant account with one the bank partners and a mobile signal, card payments can be taken wherever their business takes them. The card reader/PIN pad and the mobile app is provided as part of the package from CreditCall’s acquiring bank partners. MONEY MATTERS |

AC160 - Lamborghini Edit_Aspect County 13/12/2011 15:42 Page 10

SUPER RAGING BULL Lamborghini Aventador sets high benchmark This is the LB834 ... new better known as the Aventador, the latest and bravest from Sant'Agata, and again this is a true Raging Bull straight from the breeding grounds in Italy. This new flagship will succeed the Murciélago, and because of the sometimes difficult to pronounce name Automobili Lamborghini SpA went for a more straight forward naming this time.

to the Murciélago it is replacing, do note that this cell is built in house at Lamborghini in a brand new factory that is able to produce up to 800 units per year … which works out perfectly as about 600 Murciélago units were built each year in the last decade. So being able to produce 800 Aventadors would be just right to keep the car scarce enough on the open road.

However, rest assured, the name Aventador is again taken from bullfighting, what else, this seems to be a bull from only a few years ago, the early Nineties to be exact, apparently this fierce creature fought in Spain before it will be remembered forever in the shape of the new Italian super car that will shape the future of Lamborghini for years to come … note that an LB834 Roadster is already in the making and should be unveiled within a year or so.

When looking at the Aventador you can clearly recognize some serious family resemblance with the limited edition Reventon (especially at the rear) but also parts of the Estoque concept car can be seen in this 21st century super car. Note that the Aventador is lighter than the Murciélago, a bit longer and ever so slightly narrower but the height remains the same, add to this the power increase to no less than 691 hp in this new L539 engine and you end up with some pretty amazing figures, the power to weight ratio is right up there with the competition from Bugatti and Pagani … however the new Lamborghini Aventador comes in at about 1/3 their price tag.

The shots of the press release car are also showing a brand new shade that is now available, Arancio Argos, a name taken from the similar shade oranges grown in the south of Greece … it sure looks impressive in this colour, even standing still you can only imagine the brutal force at hand when you slide behind the steering wheel and launch that brand new V12 engine behind you. We already know this new model uses a carbon fibre monocoque cell to house the happy driver and it’s even happier passenger, stiffness of this cell is over double compared 94

ASPECT COUNTY

| MOTORING

It is clear that with the Aventador Lamborghini is setting the benchmark very high, even in house, it is now safe to say the magnificent Aventador will be running circles around the Gallardo, the latter still being an amazing car, but at this moment nothing comes close to the brutal beauty and power of the brand new flagship.

The top-three driver pairings of the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of Great Britain received their awards in recognition of their performances in the one-make series, which pits amateur racers head-to-head in identical Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT4s. The cars are derived from the V8 Vantage road car, modified in key areas to suit the demands of competitive circuit driving. The second season of the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of Great Britain, organised in conjunction with the Aston Martin Owners Club, started at Silverstone in April before taking in further UK circuits including Snetterton, Donington Park, Oulton Park and Brands Hatch, with overseas visits to SpaFrancorchamps, Belgium, in July and a season finale at Dijon, France, in September. Following a gripping championship decider, Dutchman Karsten Le Blanc and Briton Dan de Zille emerged victorious, and thus were crowned GT4 Challenge of Great Britain Winners. We ve enjoyed the Challenge so much this year, said Le Blanc. It’s not just young boys racing, but slightly more mature gentlemen

drivers, which suits me perfectly! I must say thank you to everybody at Aston Martin Racing for building such a fantastic car as the V8 Vantage GT4. Britons Tom Black and Alan Bonner collected the award for finishing second in the standings, while countrymen Chris Kemp and Stuart Hall took the prize for third. The highest accolade of the evening was determined by an innovative points system that saw no fewer than 182 individual drivers from 25 separate championships, driving in various classes, compete for the Aston Martin Racing Global Award. Competition in the Driver category was so fierce that two drivers were crowned joint winners; Spanish and Portuguese GT Championship team-mates Francisco Carvalho and Miguel Ferreira shared the laurels for having achieved multiple podium results in the Iberian series. The pair also finished as the best-placed Aston Martin crew in the final standings. Fittingly, Veloso Motorsport, the outfit responsible for Carvalho and Ferreira’s successful campaign collected Aston Martin Racing Global Award honours in the Team category.

We ve all worked so hard this season and achieved so much, said team principal Luis Veloso, so to win both the Driver and Team awards makes us all really proud. It’s been a pleasure to work with Aston Martin Racing and the V8 Vantage GT4 is a wonderful car; it’s been fast and reliable all year. Portuguese racer Pedro Lopes received the third-place Global Award in the Driver category, while Rhesus Racing and Young Driver AMR collected second and third respectively in the Team category. David King, Head of Motorsport at Aston Martin, said: It was a pleasure to honour all of our best GT4 teams and drivers from throughout Europe at the home of Aston Martin. We want to congratulate all of our award winners; they should be very proud of what they ve achieved this year. The Challenge looks set to grow even further next year with a greater number of competitors, continuing the trend from the first season of the Challenge to the second, as well as the exciting prospect of a singlemarque support race at La Sarthe during the 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend as part of the Aston Martin Festival. UPDATE TO AN ICON Visually a million miles away from the original Land Rover’s DC100 and DC100 Sport concepts investigate the potential design direction for a replacement for the iconic Defender. They will make their North American debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show on 16th November 2011. Land Rover is taking these concepts to North America to gauge reaction and explore the possibility of bringing the Defender back to the US market. John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director said: "The Defender has always been at the heart of the Land Rover Brand and single-handedly defines our go-anywhere, can-do sprit. Our ambition is to create an all new Defender for a global market that remains absolutely faithfully to its original DNA: tough, versatile, durable and capable. At the same time, it will be developed for the 21st century and adaptable for the needs of future generations. Finished in the Land Rover signature combination of 'Heritage Blue' paint with a Candy Weiss white roof, the DC100 reinvents the essential Defender design cues for the 21st century. These include short overhangs for 96

extreme approach and departure angles, vertical panels, an upright windscreen and strong shoulder line for visibility and ease of positioning and, of course, the honest Defender 'face' with its signature round lamps and prominent grille, incorporating a winch. The DC100 Sport takes all these key design cues and adds to them the spirit of freedom first embodied by the early canvas-roofed Land Rovers with their fold-down windscreens. Core Land Rover attributes of capability and versatility are underpinned in both concepts by a suite of innovative off-road technological aids that reduce the workload on the driver. Foremost of these is the next generation of Land Rover's acclaimed Terrain Response system which will optimise the car for any conditions without driver pre-selection. In addition, a new Terrain-i system creates an intelligent map of the topography in front of the car and displays it as a 3D visualisation. Terrain-i automatically identifies potential hazards and suggests alternative routes.

A new Wade Aid system utilises sonar sensors mounted in the bumpers and wing mirrors to measure water depth. As with Terrain Response, Wade Aid will optimise the car for water crossings by closing body vents, raising the ride height, selecting a low gear and advising on the safest speed. Sustainability has always been a Land Rover hallmark – more than three-quarters of the almost two million Defenders made are still doing regular duty – and the DC100 concepts extend this commitment with new technologies that will reduce their environmental impact. The first is an intelligent Twin-Solenoid Stop/Start system mated to the latest eight-speed automatic gearbox, both of which have been designed with future hybridisation in mind. Second is the unique Driveline Disconnect system, which sends power to the front-axle only unless conditions demand all-wheel drive. Unlike conventional systems, this physically, rather than electronically, decouples the rearaxle to reduce friction losses but can re engage drive almost instantaneously. Watch this space.

CARRERA CABRIOLET CALLING Folding convertible roof promises spring pleasures On sale in March 2012, the new Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet offers sporting drivers the option to enjoy the renowned dynamic qualities and iconic design of the 911 Coupe combined with the added versatility and driving pleasure offered by its folding convertible roof. The 911 Cabriolet naturally shares its new, high tech aluminium-steel body with the Coupe, and the convertible extends this innovation to its all-new, unique hood. When raised, the design of the hood ensures the iconic 911 roof line is retained in its entirety. Intelligent lightweight design, including the use of magnesium in the hood frame, ensures reduced weight for increased responsiveness, lower fuel consumption and greater comfort. As is the case with the Coupe model, the new 911 Cabriolet is significantly lighter overall than its predecessor.

Combined with lower weight, the new 911 Cabriolet models share the longer wheelbase, wider front track and the new electromechanical power steering of their Coupe siblings, ensuring the open-roofed models offer more sporting driving characteristics, greater precision and agility compared to the prior model. Likewise, front and rear overhangs are shorter, maintaining the compact footprint that has been a longstanding 911 attribute. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet has the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch transmission as an option, delivering even lower fuel consumption and shorter acceleration times. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet models go on sale in the UK on March 3 2012. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet is priced from ÂŁ79,947, the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet from ÂŁ89,740.
