County Manager Discusses Administrative Obstacles Miami-Dade County Manager George Burgess accepted the Chapter’s invitation to speak at Casa Juancho Restaurant in Miami on March 16, 2005 about the multivariate administrative obstacles faced by his administration. Manager Burgess, a strong supporter of the South Florida Chapter’s active involvement in fostering professional development, addressed his upward climb starting as a management trainee after graduating from the University of Maine to his experiences within Miami-Dade County government, in addition to his brief tenure with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and eventual appointment to the position of County Manager in 2003.

2005 Florida ASPA Conference On Friday, April 29, 2005, the 2005 Florida ASPA Conference will be held at the Clearwater Main Library, 100 North Osceola Avenue, Clearwater, FL from 8:00 AM to 5 :00 PM. The theme is Public Administration: Addressing the Needs of a Growing State. For those interested that have not already registered, the on-site registration fee is $50 for students and $60 for all others. 2009 National ASPA Conference to be held in Miami Bill Solomon of the South Florida Chapter has worked tirelessly through his position as Co-Chair of the National ASPA Capacity Steering Group, which was responsible for selecting future National Conference sites to secure the 2009 National Conference in downtown Miami at the Hyatt Regency. This exciting event provides numerous opportunities for active participation in all phases of conference planning. Additional information coming soon.

Professional Development Dr. Ray de Arrigunaga, Professor at the University of Miami and Past President of the ASPA South Florida Chapter, will make a presentation on Successful Public Sector Leadership on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 from 12 pm to 1 pm at the Miami Art Museum Auditorium, located at 101 West Flagler Street. Members interested in meeting to discuss next year’s professional development activities should contact Committee Chairperson John Topinka at (305) 644-5126. He intends to arrange a lunch meeting to obtain and discuss ideas for prospective events and activities.
