Benvenuti alla 31^ edizione di AsoloArtFilmFestival, il più antico Festival al mondo di film sull’arte. Il 2012 segna i trentun’anni dalla nascita del festival e i dieci anni dalla sua rifondazione; le origini della manifestazione risalgono infatti al 1973, quando, dalla felice intuizione di Flavia Paulon – critica, saggista e funzionaria della Mostra del Cinema di Venezia – e dalla lungimiranza di un’amministrazione locale decisa a sostenere il risveglio culturale della cittadina, nasceva ad Asolo il Festival Internazionale del Film sull’Arte e delle Biografie d’Artista, destinato a diventare sin dalla prima edizione, una delle rassegne di Film sull’Arte più importanti al mondo. In seguito alla contestazione del ’68 la Biennale di Venezia decise di abbandonare la Mostra Internazionale del Film sull’Arte e tutte le altre rassegne cinematografiche minori. Qualche anno dopo Flavia Paulon vide l’opportunità di realizzare una rassegna autonoma del Film sull’Arte nella cittadina di Asolo, evento che si distinse in poco tempo come importante occasione di arricchimento per l’intera cinematografia mondiale. Il Festival ebbe così inizio nel 1973. Flavia Paulon, oltre ad esserne stata la fondatrice, ne fu il direttore artistico fino al 1982, e sotto la sua direzione la rassegna conobbe un periodo di grande successo a livello internazionale. Dopo un’interruzione durata alcuni anni, grazie al lavoro dell’associazione AIAF, il Festival Internazionale del Film sull’Arte e delle Biografie d’Artista rinasce nel 2001 col nome di AsoloArtFilmFestival. Nel corso degli anni il Festival di Asolo ha accolto personalità di rilievo tra i quali i critici d’arte Guido Perocco, Umbro Apollonio, François Le Targat; i critici cinematografici Mario Verdone e Nedo Ivaldi e il regista belga Henri Stork. Hanno partecipato al concorso registi e artisti famosi come Andrej Tarkovskij (vincitore della prima edizione del Festival), Alain Resnais, Jean Rouch, Nam June Paik, Hermann Nitsch, Adrian Maben, Luciano Emmer, Giorgio Treves, Fabrizio Plessi, Gaetano Pesce, Luca Verdone. Grazie alla fama internazionale raggiunta, il Festival arriva a rappresentare ogni anno oltre 50 nazioni ed un totale di circa 500 opere. La programmazione dedica tra la pluralità dei suoi contenuti una particolare attenzione alle produzioni scolastiche che coinvolgono gli studenti delle migliori scuole di cinema europee ed internazionali. Innovazione audiovisiva, performance artistiche e videoinstallazioni ridefiniranno il contesto cittadino creando un dialogo interculturale e interdisciplinare tra la contemporaneità artistica europea e quella russa, grazie alla vitale e inedita adesione della Russia. ASOLO ART FILM FESTIVAL 31th EDITION

Welcome to the 31th edition of the AsoloArtFilmFestival, the oldest art film festival in the world. This year’s edition celebrates the thirtieth anniversary from the creation of the Festival and the tenth from its new foundation. The origins of this cultural event date back to 1973 when it was originally conceived by Flavia Paulon, critic and writer who worked for the Venice Film Festival. Its first denomination was International Art’s Film and Artists’ Biographies Festival, and was offered remarkable support by the Asolo municipality as it was regarded as a great cultural opportunity, also considering that in 1968 the Biennale eventually decided not to show minor films and art films anymore. A few years later, when there had been the opportunity to create an Independent Festival for Films on Art in the town of Asolo, Flavia Paulon realized that it could have been an important chance for enrichment for the whole world film industry. Flavia Paulon was the artistic director of the Festival until 1982, during which period she gave the Festival an international impulse and success. After a several years standstill, the International Art’s Film and Artists’ Biographies Festival was brought back to life in 2001, thanks to the AIAF commitment, under the new name of AsoloArtFilmFestival. Since its beginning the festival has received prestige by the personalities who took part in it, such as the art critics: Guido Perocco, Umbro Apollonio, François Le Targat; the film critics like Mario Verdone and Nedo Ivaldi and the Belgian director Henri Stork, just to name a few. Moreover, many important directors joined the Festival competition, among them: Andrej Tarkovskij (winner of the first edition of the Festival), Alain Resnais, Jean Rouch, Nam June Paik, Hermann Nitsch, Adrian Maben, Luciano Emmer, Giorgio Treves, Fabrizio Plessi, Gaetano Pesce and Luca Verdone. Thanks to its international fame, the Festival represents every year more than 50 countries and a total of about 500 works. This year, in particular, the Festival devotes special attention to the works created by students from the best European and International Schools of Cinema. During the 31th edition of the Festival the town of Asolo will be transformed by the audio visual innovations, artistic performances and video installations, generating an intercultural dialogue between contemporary European and Russian art, thanks to lively presence in Asolo of artists and performers from Russia.

Torna anche quest’anno ad agosto l’Asolo Art Film Festival, giunto alla sua trentunesima edizione. Si tratta di una rassegna riconosciuta ormai come una delle manifestazioni filmiche più prestigiose a livello internazionale, che ha il merito di fare di Asolo e del territorio trevigiano il centro di un proficuo scambio culturale. Nei giorni del Festival, inoltre, sono previste una serie di iniziative parallele, tra cui esposizioni, eventi musicali, liveart e incontri con i protagonisti: un’occasione unica per entrare in contatto con il mondo dell’arte e del cinema, oltre che un ulteriore richiamo turistico per l’area e per l’intero Veneto. Quest’anno il Festival costruirà un ponte ideale con la Russia e la sua cultura, a cui è dedicata la trentunesima edizione. Un modo per entrare in contatto con tradizioni, storie, luoghi lontani geograficamente ma che certamente possono arricchire la nostra esperienza. Sono quindi contento di salutare questa importante rassegna, ormai appuntamento fisso per addetti ai lavori e appassionati di arte e cinema, oltre che dell’estate trevigiana e veneta. Ringrazio gli organizzatori del Festival e auguro a tutti coloro che parteciperanno di godere di queste giornate d’arte e di cinema. The AsoloArtFilmFestival, now in its 31st edition, is back again this year in August. It’s a well-renowned film season, one of the most prestigious film festivals internationally, which has the merit of transforming Asolo and the surrounding area into a centre of fruitful cultural exchange. A series of parallel initiatives are included during the days of the festival, such as exhibitions, music events, performances and encounters with the protagonists: a unique opportunity to get in touch with the art and cinema world, becoming a centre of touristic appeal for the area and the whole region of Veneto. This year, the festival will build an ideal bridge with Russia and its culture, to which the edition is dedicated. This is a way to get in contact with traditions, histories and places which are far-away geographically but that will certainly contribute to enrich our experience. L’AsoloArtFilmFestival – Festival Internazionale di Film d’arte e Biografie d’artista è arrivato alla sua XXXI° edizione: ormai una storica e prestigiosa presenza nel nostro territorio, che ha il pregio di richiamare l’attenzione di appassionati e di addetti ai lavori di tutto il mondo, indicando la strada poi percorsa con successo da analoghi Festival come quello di Parigi e Montréal. Ed è nello splendido scenario di Asolo, la “città dei cento orizzonti”, a fine estate, che si allarga lo sguardo sulle mille sfaccettature dell’espressione artistica contemporanea. Il Festival asolano, tra numerose difficoltà, ha la prerogativa di aver aperto una strada nuova. E all’associazione AsoloInternationalArtFestival - che nel 2002 ha rifondato la rassegna – è riconosciuto l’indubbio merito di aver dato nuovo respiro all’iniziativa, rendendola una delle manifestazioni di settore più note ed esclusive. Un vero successo internazionale e consolidato e lo dimostrano i numeri del Festival: un numero crescente di opere pervenute nelle diverse edizioni in rappresentanza di numerosi Paesi. The AsoloArtFilmFestival – International Festival of Art Film and Artist’s Biography – has now reached its XXXI edition: an historic and prestigious presence on our territory, which has the merit of drawing the attention of lovers and experts from all over the world, showing the way to later successful festivals such as Paris and Montréal. It takes place in the beautiful setting of Asolo, the “town of hundred horizons”, at the end of summer, broadening the view on thousand different forms of artistic expression. Thanks to the work of the association AsoloInternationalArtFesival – which relaunched the festival in 2002 – this cultural initiative has been revived, becoming one of the most remarkable and exclusive event. Benvenuti alla 31^ Edizione di AsoloArtFilmFestival, il più antico Festival al mondo di cinema sull’arte! Anche quest’anno motivati dal rispetto di una grande tradizione, dalla straordinaria partecipazione ottenuta dal bando e dal successo dell’ultima edizione, ci siamo dati un gran da fare per programmare una manifestazione senza precedenti. Molti i film arrivati ad Asolo che hanno reso impegnativa e stimolante l’attività di selezione che sarà proposta al Teatro Duse dal 18 al 29 agosto 2012. Oltre 40 film in concorso e 20 nazioni rappresentate, con un contributo importante dalle produzioni italiane e dalle scuole di cinema. Inoltre una ricca rassegna speciale di Cinema Russo, un omaggio al cinema del Paraguay e una sezione dedicata ai più giovani. Affianco ai film in concorso un insieme di mostre dedicate alla Russia in collaborazione con il Museo Civico e gallerie di Asolo. Una serie di esposizioni con artisti russi per la prima volta in Italia, a consolidare la vocazione internazionale del Festival. Non poteva mancare la musica con una rassegna di concerti che coinvolgerà studenti stranieri e italiani, coordinati dal violinista austriaco Thomas Christian e dal direttore d’orchestra Roberto Zarpellon. Grazie all’aiuto di molti volontari, il prezioso borgo di Asolo si trasformerà in un palcoscenico diffuso. 12 indimenticabili giorni tra proiezioni, premi, esibizioni, performance che coinvolgeranno altre gemme del territorio come Villa Barbaro a Maser, la Gipsoteca Museo e il Tempio di Antonio Canova, a Possagno. Il 2012 è anche l’anno per festeggiare il 50° anniversario del Fluxus, importante rivoluzione creativa del Novecento, che ad Asolo ha lasciato delle tracce indimenticabili. Proprio per questo abbiamo scelto di assegnare il Premio annuale ‘Arte e Cultura’ in memoria a Francesco Conz e di celebrare in una mostra la straordinaria capacità visionaria. Viva il Festival! Welcome to the 31^ Edition of AsoloArtFilmFestival, the world’s oldest Festival of films on Art! This year again, motivated by the respect of a great tradition, an extraordinary participation in the film contest and the success of last year edition, we have worked hard to plan an event without precedent. Many movies have come to Asolo, making difficult and challenging the selection that will be proposed at the Teatro Duse from 18 through 29 August 2012. Over 40 films in competitionand 20 nations represented, with important contributions from the Italian productions, as well as from Film schools. In addition, a special scheduling of Russian films and documentaries, a tribute to the cinema of Paraguay and a section dedicated to the youngest audience. Next to the films in competition a number of exhibitions devoted to Russia in collaboration with the Museo Civico and galleries of Asolo. A series of events with Russian artists for the first time in Italy, to consolidate the international vocation of the Festival. Music should never miss, and therefore we propose a series of concerts involving Italian and foreign students, and coordinated by the Austrian violinist Thomas Christian and conductor Roberto Zarpellon. With the help of many volunteers, the precious medieval town of Asolo will turn into a widespread stage. 12 unforgettable days of screenings, awards, exhibitions, performances that will also involve other territories, and their special gems such as Villa Barbaro at Maser, the Gipsoteca Museum and the Temple of Antonio Canova in Possagno. The 2012 is the year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fluxus, an important creative revolution of the twentieth century, which has left unforgettable traces in Asolo. Therefore we’ve decided to assign the annual award ‘Arts and Culture’ in memory of Francesco Conz and to celebrate his extraordinary visionare through an exhibition.

La giuria di AsoloArtFilmFestival viene costituita attraverso la selezione di vari protagonisti nel mondo del cinema, dellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;arte e della cultura in generale. I giurati si incontrano nelle giornate iniziali del Festival per decidere i film vincitori. The jury of AsoloArtFilmFestival is established through the selection of different leading players in the world of cinema, art and culture. The jurors meet in the initial days of the festival to decide the winners.

VITTORIO DALLE ORE

Vittorio Dalle Ore ha conseguito il diploma di Bachelor of Arts and Sciences negli USA alla Northwestern University per poi studiare cinematografia alla New York University e a Roma prima di entrare nell’equipe di Akira Kurosawa che ha seguito per un arco di 15 anni. La collaborazione con il grande maestro giapponese iniziò nel 1983 come assistente volontario sulla lavorazione di “Ran” della quale ha seguito la preparazione, il montaggio e l’edizione, fino a partecipare al giro di promozione internazionale in occasione del lancio del film. E’ stato quindi assunto come aiuto regista ed assistente al montaggio per “Sogni”, “Rapsodia d’Agosto” e “Madadayo”. Il suo lungo rapporto con il regista giapponese lo ha portato a stretto contatto con la cultura giapponese e il mondo del cinema internazionale. Attualmente scrive, si occupa di produzione cinematografica, e della Villa di Maser (Villa Barbaro), monumento di Andrea Palladio, Patrimonio dell’Umanità UNESCO nella quale ha la fortuna di vivere. Vittorio Dalle Ore got the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree at the Northwestern University, USA and studied cinematography at the New York University and in Rome before working with the Akira Kurosawa équipe for 15 years. His collaboration with the great Japanese master began in 1983 as voluntary assistant during the making of “Ran”, taking care of the preparation, the editing and of the international promotion during the launch of the movie. He was then hired as director and editing assistant in “Dreams”, “Rhapsody in August”, and “Madadayo”. His long working relationship with the Japanese director gave him the chance to appreciate Japanese culture and the world of international cinema. Currently he writes, works on film productions, he lives and is the owner of Villa di Maser (Villa Barbaro), a building made by Andrea Palladio, included in the UNESCO World Heritages list.

MIKKEL MALTHA

Mikkel Maltha è nato nel 1973 e lavora per il Gruppo Zentropa dal 1998, fino al 2003 come avvocato di produzioni in-house e dal 2003 in poi come supervisore musicale. È stato responsabile della produzione legale di molte pellicole tra le quali “Dancer in the Dark”, “Dogville” (Lars Von Trier), oltre ad aver supervisionato la produzione della colonna sonora di più di 30 film, incluso “Dopo il matrimonio” (Susanne Bier) e “Island of Lost Souls” (Nikolaj Arcel). Contemporaneamente alla sua attività di supervisore musicale, Mikkel Maltha ha svolto anche il lavoro di compositore per vari film e progetti televisivi. Ha composto musica per il corto drammatico “At Night” nominato all’Oscar Academy Awards 2008 e per il film “Razone” nominato al Robert Film Award 2007 per la migliore canzone originale. Mikkel Maltha was born in 1973. He has been working for the Zentropa Group since 1998. From 1998 to 2003 he worked as in-house production lawyer and from 2003 he became music supervisor. He has been responsible for the legal production of films like “Dancer in the Dark” (Lars von Trier) and “Dogville” (Lars von Trier) and he supervised the film soundtrack productions of more than 30 films including “After the Wedding” (Susanne Bier) and “Island of Lost Souls” (Nikolaj Arcel). Besides his work as music supervisor, Mikkel Maltha worked as composer on various film and TV projects. He composed the music for the 2008 Oscar Academy Awards nominated short drama “At Night” and he was nominated for the best original song at the 2007 Robert Film Award (Danish Academy Awards) for the feature film “Råzone”.

PRATI KULSHRESHTHA

Laureata in Scienze Botaniche presso l’Università di Delhi, studia lingua e letteratura italiana nella stessa città mentre lavora presso il giornale più letto in India, “The Times of India”. Scrive articoli sull’educazione e i problemi del sistema di istruzione. Dopo un anno di permanenza in Italia, vince la borsa di studio erogata dal Governo Italiano per continuare il suo lavoro di ricerca a Perugia. Al suo ritorno in India consegue il Master in Letteratura e Storia italiana e il M.Phil. Attualmente studia per conseguire il PhD in letteratura italiana dall’Università di Delhi, dove lavora anche come Docente di letteratura italiana alla Facoltà d’Arte. Ha lavorato nel Parlamento Indiano a Delhi come “Research Intern”. Ha collaborato con La Stampa al Salone Del Libro a Torino nel 2010, intervistando gli autori indiani e gli studiosi italiani. Collabora con Mediaset al programma televisivo “Le Iene” come corrispondente Indiana. Graduated in Botanical Sciences in India at the University of Delhi. She studied Italian language and literature, working simultaneously for “The Times of India”, India’s largest selling English Daily. Wrote articles on education and the challenges faced by India’s education system. After the first year of Italian studies, she got a scholarship by the Government of Italy to study Italian culture in Perugia. She then completed a Master and MPhil programme in Italian History and Literature at the University of Delhi. She’s currently studying to achieve a PhD in Italian Literature at the University of Delhi, where she works as a lecturer of Italian Literature at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. She has also worked in the Indian Parliament in Delhi as Research Intern. She has collaborated with “La Stampa” at “Salone Del Libro” in Turin in 2010, interviewing various Indian authors and Italian intellectuals. She collaborates with Mediaset for the TV broadcast “Le Iene” as Indian correspondent.

CARLO BRAGAGNOLO

Documentarista freelance e fotografo. Il suo primo documentario importante “RAKENA”,realizzato per conto del P.A.M.- O.N.U, in Tchad, ha vinto un premio a Vancouver (CND). Al festival TV di Kyoto, ha vinto un premio come direttore della fotografia per una serie televisiva prodotta da Kengy Yamashita. Ha collaborato con importanti testate tv del mondo e ciò gli ha permesso di viaggiare molto confrontandosi con altre realtà e sensibilità e di cimentarsi, soprattutto nella regia del documentario. Con Nico Garrone ha girato “Montichiello, storia di una banda e di un paese” due puntate di 50’ per RAI TRE, e “La villeggiatura”, di C. Goldoni, Regia Teatrale di Gabriele Vacis, con Vittorio Barattolo. “G. Battista Tiepolo”, cinque puntate di 55’ e “L’Ultima Dogaressa” documentario su Peggy Guggenheim. In qualità di operatore di ripresa e co-regia: “Overland 4” dal Portogallo alla Cina” 13 Puntate di 56’ per Rai. In 40 anni di attività si è confrontato con diverse tecnologie di ripresa, partendo dal 16mm, passando al 35mm per arrivare alle ultime tecnologie.Utimamente è stato docente di tecnica di ripresa presso l’istituto professionale IRIGEM e si occupa di corsi di fotografia e di ripresa video presso centri culturali. Carlo Bragagnolo is a freelance documentary film-maker and photographer. His first major documentary “RAKENA”, made on behalf of P.A.M.- O.N.U, in Tchad, won a prize in Vancouver (CND). At the TV festival in Kyoto, he won an award as a cinematographer for a television series produced by Kengy Yamashita. He has worked with major TV networks worldwide, which allowed him to travel extensively and come into contact with other realities and sensibilities, especially with reference to the genre of documentary. He has directed, with Nico Garrone, “Montichiello, the story of a band and a town” two episodes of 50 minutes for RAI TRE, and “La villeggiatura” by Carlo Goldoni, theatrical direction by Gabriele Vacis with Vittorio Barattolo. He has also directed “G. Battista Tiepolo”, five episodes of 55 minutes, and the documentary “The Last Dogaressa” about Peggy Guggenheim. As a cameraman and co-director he has worked on “Overland 4, from Portugal to China”, 13 episodes of 56 minutes for Rai. In his 40 years professional activity, he has dealt with various video technologies, starting from 16mm through to 35mm and to the newest technologies. Recently he has been appointed as teacher of Filming Techniques at the Professional Institute IRIGEM. He also teaches photography and film-making at various cultural centres.

MANLIO BRUSATIN

Manlio Brusatin ha insegnato al Dipartimento di Conservazione dei Beni Culturali di Ca’ Foscari e alla Facoltà del Design del Politecnico di Milano, dalla loro fondazione. Presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Alghero ha coordinato l’apertura del corso di laurea in Design. Nel corso dei suoi lavori è venuto delineando una storia critica delle forme che ne investiga la dimensione tecnica e il significato creativo, in una trilogia tradotta in più lingue: Storia dei colori (1983), Storia delle immagini (1989) Storia delle linee (1993). Con i saggi: Arte della meraviglia (1986) Arte dell’oblio (2000) e Colore senza nome (2006) ha indagato su aspetti di storia delle idee e dei sistemi comunicativi delle immagini in quanto suggestione-percezione-ricezione-obliterazione. Il saggio Arte come design (2007) individua il rapporto design/arte contemporanea mettendo il relazione soggetto/progetto/oggetto. Ha collaborato a varie Biennali di Venezia delle Arti, dell’Architettura e del Teatro e in particolare con Paolo Portoghesi (1980) e con Jean Clair (1995). Ha esperienza internazionale sul tema del “Colore” argomento sul quale ha tenuto lezioni, conferenze, seminari in fondazioni, musei e università. Manlio Brusatin has been working as a lecturer at the Department of Conservation of Cultural Heritage of Ca’ Foscari University in Venice and at the Faculty of Design at the Politecnico of Milan since their foundation. He has coordinated the setting up of the degree course in Design at the Faculty of Architecture of Alghero. In the course of his professional activity, he has been gradually outlining a critical history of forms that investigates the technical dimension and the creative implications which took the form of a trilogy translated into several languages: “History of colours” (1983), “History of images” (1989) and “History of lines” (1993 ). With the essays “Art of wonder” (1986), “Art of oblivion” (2000) and “Unnamed Colour” (2006), he has investigated aspects of the history of ideas and communication systems of images intended as suggestion-perception-reception-obliteration. The essay “Art as Design” (2007) identifies the relationship between design and contemporary art by interrelating subject/project/object. He has collaborated with various Venice Biennale of Visual Arts, Architecture and Theatre and in particular with Paolo Portoghesi (1980) and Jean Clair (1995). He has international experience on the theme of “Colour”, a topic on which he has held lectures, conferences, seminars in foundations, museums and universities.

Il premio Eleonora Duse nasce per volontà di Flavia Paulon nel 1977 a celebrazione della “Divina” innamorata di Asolo, dove soggiorna per lunghi periodi e dove, per sua espressa volontà viene sepolta nel piccolo e raccolto cimitero di S. Anna. La prima edizione del premio vede protagonista l’attrice Ingrid Bergman, che rievoca la vita di Eleonora Duse in una lunga intervista sulla sua tomba, per essere poi consegnato ad altre importanti attrici di teatro e di cinema tra cui Elisabeth Bergner nel 1982 (X edizione), Monica Vitti nel 1983, Paola Borboni nel 1984 (XII edizione), Ottavia Piccolo nel 2008 (XXVII edizione) e Golshifte Farahani nel 2009 (XXVIII edizione), la giovane e coraggiosa attrice iraniana. “Eleonora Duse Prize” was established by Flavia Paulon in 1977 in celebration of the “Divine” in love with Asolo, where she stayed for long periods and where, by her express desire, was buried in the small and intimate cemetery of St. Anna. The award was first given to the actress Ingrid Bergman, who retold the life of Eleonora Duse in a long interview over Ms. Duse’ grave. Other famous actresses of theatre and cinema who have received the award are: Elisabeth Burgner in 1982 (10th edition), Monica Vitti in 1983(11th edition), Paola Borboni in 1984 (12th edition), Ottavia Piccolo in 2008 (27th edition) and Golshifte Farahani in 2009 (28th edition), the young and brave Iranian actress.

OLGA CHAGAOUTDINOVA Nata e cresciuta in Russia, attualmente vive e lavora fra Calgary e Montréal in Canada. Olga Chagaoutdinova attraverso la fotografia e il video analizza il tema della domesticità, della globalizzazione e, più recentemente, della sofferenza nella società contemporanea. Presso la Pedagogical University of Khabarovsk in Russia consegue una laurea (Bachelor of Arts) in Lingua Russa e Letterature del Mondo (1992); successivamente frequenta la St. Petersburg University e riceve un Certificate Program in Storia della cultura e della religione (1994); presso la Emily Carr University of Vancouver ottiene nel 2005 il Bachelor in Fine Arts in Fotografia, e nel 2008 il Master of Fine Arts presso la Concordia University, a Montréal in Canada. Nel suo lavoro, l’artista osserva lo scambio di codici culturali attraverso la ricerca dell’identità personale, dei valori, della memoria collettiva e individuale. Ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti in particolare il premio della Fondazione Magenta al Concorso Internazionale Flash Forward (2005), il premio della Fondazione de Sève (2005), la borsa di studio dalla Power Corporation of Canada, la borsa di studio Roloff Benny per la Fotografia (2006) e il Premio Opline 2010 (Francia). She has received numerous awards for her work, most notably the Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward International Competition (2005), the Foundation de Sève Award (2005), the Power Corporation of Canada Graduate Fellowship, and the Roloff Benny Fellowship in Photography (2006), 2010 Opline Prize, France. It was with her MFA Graduate Solo show (2008) at Trois Points Gallery, Montreal, Quebec that she was selected as one of the ten best graduate students in Canada by Canadian Art Magazine. In 2011 two projects where presented at Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA) and Stome-Ache project was nominated for Kandinsky Award, Russia. FRANCESCO CONZ AUTOBIOGRAFIA FLUXOGRAFICA Verso la fine del 1972 mi recai a Berlino per motivi di lavoro e lì San Francesco, mio patrono e protettore degli sfiduciati e degli avviliti, mi fece conosce Joe Jones che mi parlò del gruppo Fluxus e Gunther Brus che mi introdusse presso Nitsch e Muehl e quindi all’”azioniamo viennese”. Emozionantissimo ritornai in Italia e cercai di verificare il tutto. Visitai Nitsch a Dresse, presso Monaco(era li in provvisorio esilio) ed ebbi la fortuna di incontrare Gerhard Rühm che mi parlò per la prima volta del Wiener Gruppe e di “poesia visiva”. Rientrai e in meno di un mese liquidai la galleria e la seconda collezione, poche settimane dopo,con Beate, Nitsch e Brus partimmo per una visita a New York, ed io, ben fornito di nomi, cognomi e annotazioni, che Joe Jones mi aveva procurato, incomincia a visitare gli artisti che tanto mi avevano interessato. Al mio ritorno, altro miracolo del mio santo protettore. In seguito a una mia intervista televisiva ricevetti una telefonata dal benemerito Conte Orazio Baglioni di Asolo che voleva conoscermi e mi offriva in affitto un palazzotto nel centro di Asolo. Visitato, detto, fatto. Avevo ora una degna sede per la mia nuova attività con annessi, al pian terreno, alcuni locali subito destinati ad esposizione. Questo è stato veramente un momento magico della mia vita e Asolo era ancora immersa nel ricordo delle vecchie glorie culturali.Sembrava che Eleonora Duse non fosse mai dipartita e che Robert Browning e Malipiero fossero ancora lì sulla terrazza del Caffè Centrale a prendere il sole. Erano tempi in cui l’albergo Cipriani usava l’argenteria e le lenzuola di lino, ed il “Caffè Centrale” aveva l’imponenza romantica di un locale viennese. Asolo, lontano da campi da sci e dalle spiagge, era rimasto intatto e protetto dal turismo. Un vero paradiso per gli artisti, per me, per l’arte. Joe Jones vi si era stabilito(vi resterà fino al 1978) e così pure Nitsch che nel giugno del 1973 realizzerà il suo ambiente più rappresentativo: “Asolo Raum”. Serate meravigliose,meeting creativi, cene nei locali vicini al paese e discussioni senza fine al Caffè Centrale fino alle ore piccole [...] Francesco Conz Catalogo “Fluxus spqr” in collaborazione Archivio F. Conz/Archivio Domus Jani, Illasi” nella Galleria Fontanella Borghese a Roma il giugno 1990. A FLUXOGRAPHIC AUTOBIOGRAPHY Toward the end of 1972 I had to sojourn in Berlin for business reasons, and there Saint Francis, my patron Saint and Protector against discouragement and dejection, led me to become acquainted with Joe Jones who spoke to me of the Fluxus group and of Gunther Brus, who introduced me next to Nitsch and Muehl and thus to “Viennese actionism”. Very excited, I returned to Italy and attempted to complete my Knowledge of the phenomenon. I visited Nitsch in Diessen, Münich ( where he was in temporary exile), and I had the good luck to meet Gerhard Rühm who spoke to me for the first time of the Wiener Group 36

and of “visual poetry”. I went home and in a month liquidated the gallery and my second collection. A few weeks later, with Beate, Nitsch and Brus we left foir a trip to New York and I, well supplied with first names, family names and notes by Joe Jones, began to visit the artists who had so greatly interested me. On my return another miracle from my Holy Protector: immediately after a televised interviews I received a telephone call From the distinguished Count Orazio Baglioni di Asolo who wanted to meet me and offered to rent me a palazzo in Asolo.. Met, agreed, done. Now I had a worthy headquarters for my new activies, with premises on the ground floor soon to be the site of exhibitions. This was truly a magical moment in my life, and Asolo was still immersed in the memory of former cultural glories. Eleonora Duse Seemed never to have passed away and Robert Browning and Malipiero still appeared to be sunning themselves on the terrace of the Caffe Centrale. Those were times in which the Cipriani restaurant had its tables set with silver and linen-cloths, and the Caffe Centrale possessed the romantic aura of a Viennese meeting-place. Asolo, far from the Ski resorts and beaches, had remained protected from tourism. A true paradise for artists, for me and for art. Joe Jones established himself there (where he would remain until 1978), and it was also there that Nitsch in June of ‘73 created his most representative environment, “Asolo Raum”. Marvelous evenings, creative meetings, dinners in the inns of the surrounding countryside and unending discussions in the Caffè Centrale into the early hours of the morning. Mikalay è un vecchio uomo e l’unico abitante della più grande foresta europea , Belavezhskaya Pushcha. Questo luogo un tempo era pieno di vita, ma molte persone lo hanno abbandonato per la città o sono morte. Quello che deprime Mikalaj è la solitudine. È Così ha resuscitato la sua gente di campagna. Ha fatto centinaia di figure in legno che rappresentano tutti i possibili tipi di lavoro agricolo e di tutte le fasi della vita umana. Le sue piccole figure amano, si sposano, partoriscono, divorziano, devono e muoiono. La società ha anche una piccola bomba nucleare che minaccia l’esistenza stessa di una umanità in miniatura. Ecco come vive Mikalaj: lavorando nel campo come i suoi antenati e parlando ai suoi uomini piccoli.

Mikalaj is an old man and the only inhabitant of a village in the biggest forest of Europe, Belavezhskaya Pushcha. This place was teeming with life once, but since then all the other people have either left for the city or died. What depresses Mikalaj is not merely solitude. It is very hard for him to deal with the utter lifestyle and mentality. So he resurrected his country folk. He made hundreds of wooden figures representing all possible kinds of farm work and all the stages of human life. His small characters work, love, marry, give birth, divorce, drink and die. The tiny society has even a nuclear bomb that threatens the very existence of a miniature mankind. That is how Mikalaj lives: working in the field like his ancestors did and talking to his little men.

Questo documentario biografico descrive la produzione neorealistica ispirata al sociale e all’antropologia. Taffarel ha vissuto a lungo sapendo ben guardare la vita degli altri cercando di capire e cogliere i fili tra la piccola e invisibile storia e la grande storia, per questo i suoi cortometraggi rimangono come piccole perle nella storia del cinema, trasformando la vita e il dolore di persone comuni in poetica dell’immagine.

Giuseppe Taffarel was born in Vittorio Veneto (1 marzo 1922 - 9 aprile 2012) and was a prolific documentary film-maker, granted a Career Award at the Asolo Film Festival in 2009. This biographical documentary depicts the neo-realistic production inspired by social and anthropological aspects. Taffarel has long lived knowing well how to observe other people’s life, trying to understand and interlace the small and invisible history of everyday life with the greater history of the world; for this reason his short films are small gems in the history of cinema, able to transform the pain and life of common people into a poetics of images.

Il risultato è il ritratto unico e originale di un grande cineasta. Nel suo documentario, la Proskurina svela l’amicizia personale con Sokurov e i protagonisti dei suoi film che si sono lasciati riprendere, in un’atmosfera molto calda e accogliente, come non avrebbero fatto con nessun altro intervistatore. “Ogni fotogramma dell’Arca russa contiene tutta la storia del cinema mondiale”. Un ritratto intimo e obiettivo, costituito dall’intreccio di monologhi e riflessioni del regista sulla vita e sull’arte, alternati a immagini di riprese dal set di Russkij kovčeg (Russian Ark, 2002). Il risultato è il ritratto unico e originale di un grande cineasta. Nel suo documentario, Proskurina svela l’amicizia personale con Sokurov e i protagonisti dei suoi film che si sono lasciati riprendere, in un’atmosfera molto calda e accogliente, come non avrebbero mai fatto con un altro intervistatore. “Ogni fotogramma dell’Arca russa contiene tutta la storia del cinema mondiale”. The dramatic story of the life and career of one of Russia’s most legendary cinematographers, Georgij Ivanovič Rerberg (1937– 1999). Il film racconta l’eroica difesa della Fortezza di Brest, che subì il primo attacco degli invasori tedeschi il 22 giugno 1941, con precisione documentaristica vengono descritti gli accadimenti e gli eventi dei primi giorni dei combattimenti. Il film descrive i tre grandi centri della resistenza, guidata dai comandanti Pyotr Mikhailovich Gavrilov, Efim Moiseevich Fomin e Andrey Mitrofanovich Kizhevatov. Il filo che lega i personaggi, è la storia di Sasha Akimov (Alioscia Kopashov), gli avvenimenti sono narrati infatti attraverso lo sguardo del quindicenne Sasha, uno dei pochi difensori superstiti della Fortezza di Brest. Il film non racconta solo sulla guerra ma anche le relazioni umane tra i principali protagonisti.

A war drama set during the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, in which Russian troops held on to a border stronghold for nine days. The film shows the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress, which had taken upon the first strike of German nazi invaders on June 22 1941. Story describes the events of the first days of the defense. The film tells about three main resistance zones, headed by the regiment commander, Pyotr Mikhailovich Gavrilov, the commissar Efim Moiseevich Fomin and the head of the 9th frontier outpost, Andrey Mitrofanovich Kizhevatov. Many years later veteran Alexander Akimov again and again recalls the memories of the time, when he, then a 15 year old Sasha Akimov was deeply in love with the beautiful Anya and suddenly found himself in the middle of the bloody events of war.

In una delle sue interviste lo scrittore e premio Nobel per la Letteratura Iosif Brodskij, alla domanda se un giorno sarebbe mai tornato in patria, rispose: «Un viaggio del genere sarebbe possibile soltanto nell’anonimato…» Gli autori del film hanno in qualche modo reso possibile che questo viaggio si realizzasse. Il poeta intraprende un viaggio in nave verso il paese della sua giovinezza, superando le barriere geografiche e quelle temporali e lo spettatore insieme con lui. I ricordi affiorano alla mente: siamo trasportati indietro nell’URSS degli anni 50-60 e assaporiamo l’atmosfera «europea» di San Pietroburgo. Il film è una sintesi perfetta di storia e invenzione favolistica attraverso materiali documentari e animazione.

During one of his interviews, the writer and Nobel Prize in Literature Iosif Brodskij, to the question whether one day he would come back to his native country, he replied: “Such journey could be possible only in anonymity…”. Somehow, the authors of this film have made this possible. The poet, accompanied by the spectator, embarks on a journey by sea towards the country which evokes his youth, overcoming geography and time barriers. Past memories emerge: we are taken back in time, in URSS during the 50s-60s, where we enjoy the “European” atmosphere of St Petersburg. The film is a perfect synthesis of factual history and fiction, narrated through documentary material and animation.

Un anno prima della sua morte, Vladimir Vysotskij, cade in uno stato di “morte clinica” durante una tournee in Uzbekistan. Per la prima volta, in questo film, vengono adottate tecnologie particolari per ricreare Mosca e l’Uzbekistan degli anni ‘70. Durante le riprese sono stati usati degli obiettivi ad ottica anamorfica per ricreare l’effetto visivo del vecchio cinema sovietico.

This film is about one of the most dramatic periods of Vladimir Vysotskij’s life. We watch our hero at the height of success. He is the most famous person in Soviet Union during the 1970s. But his energy has somehow reached the limit. He’s exhausted, unable to use his talent, he feels incapable of writing…The film is based on true events. A year before his death, Vladimir Vysotskij entered a state of “clinical death” during a tour in Uzbekistan. For the first time, special technologies have been adopted in this film to faithfully re-create Moscow and Uzbekistan during the 1970s. The shootings have been carried out using anamorphic lenses to render the same visual effect of the old soviet cinema.

Film-portrait of one of the most extraordinary women of the past century. Anna Grigorjevna Snitkina, at the age of 20, became wife of 45 years old Fëdor Mikhailovič Dostoevskij. Thanks to the strength of her love, she nearly managed to cure his husband’s epilepsy, saving him from debts and compulsive gambling. She also gave him four children and fourteen years of happy and active life in terms of artistic creativity. The film includes exclusive reconstructions, shot in Dostoevskij’s family estate based in Staraja Russa, with added comments by researchers, memories and interpretations extracted from the stenographic diary written by the wife of the great genius.

Bob Koshelokhov is a unique figure. He is one of the few living artists whose imagination, creative energy, and audacity put him on a scale with the big names of the twentieth-century avant-garde. In conclusion, my most important issue about this film is a collaboration with the artist himself: an attempt to transfer his art (the spirit of his art) to a new medium, an attempt to visually render the artist’s future project (Alexander Markov).

Naturalmente, un figlio, creatura viva di Dio, è quanto di più alto possa essere creato dall’uomo. Masha, sua figlia, sta crescendo e Ulyana ha deciso di tornare sul palcoscenico. Ma l‘arte può essere molto gelosa. Adesso la danzatrice classica dovrà ricominciare nuovamente il cammino per raggiungere le vette di maestria che una volta aveva già toccato.

Exclusive shootings about the world famous ballet dancer Ulyana Lopatkina during her rehearsals and performances at the Mariinskiy Theatre. We observe the ballet dancer closely, throughout the creative process and the every day’s life. The world of a classical dance demands a particular concentration. Art can absorb completely and separate from the people – there are lots of examples. Ulyana has interrupted her dancing experiments at the top of her career to give birth to her daughter. Of course, a child, as alive God’s creature, is higher than anything else created by humans. Masha, her daughter, is growing up and Ulyana has decides to come back to the stage. But art can be very jealous. Now the ballet dancer has to go the same way to reach the mastership peaks she had already reached once.

Our guides, through this ‘doll’ city, will be famous artist Viktor Grigoryev who creates unique mechanical toys – ‘automatons’ (a rare craft which takes it’s beginning from French watchmakers of 17th century) – and outstanding composer Oleg Karavaitchuk, the author of many film scores, who has the gift of a vivid speaking.

Il film è dedicato al singolare mondo dei replicanti dell’uomo: il mondo delle statue, delle bambole, dei manichini, che a San Pietroburgo si trovano in quantità. Le nostre guide in questa città di “bambole” sono il famoso artista Viktor Grigoryev il quale realizza giocattoli meccanici unici – si tratta di ‘automi’ (un’arte rara che prende le sue origini dai fabbricatori francesi di orologi del XVII secolo) – e lo straordinario compositore Oleg Karavaitchuk, autore di colonne sonore di molti film, il quale ha la capacità di comunicare in modo molto intenso.

Quando i genitori portano i loro figli a scuola di musica, non sanno se la musica li affascinerà e aprirà loro un nuovo magico mondo. Non sanno nemmeno se i giovani musicisti saranno costanti e forti abbastanza per fare musica. E’ una questione di straordinaria pazienza dell’insegnante e di desiderio di coinvolgere il bambino in un processo di gioco e creatività. Di solito, quando parliamo di scuola di musica, pensiamo alla scuola dove ai bambini viene impartita la musica classica. Ci sono solo poche scuole dove i bambini suonano il jazz, ma nella scuola raccontata da Vorobyoya possiamo trovare due jazz ensembles. E guardiamo quei bambini suonare al “Jazz Parnas” festival. Bambini con età e personalità diverse ma tutti uniti dall’amore per la musica jazz. E’ la loro personale visione di questa musica “non per bambini” che rende la composizione jazz fresca e ingenua. Lunghe e faticose prove sono dietro concerti di successo.

When parents bring their kids to the musical school, they have no idea whether the music will fascinate their children and open a new magic world. They also don’t know whether young musicians will be assiduous and strong enough to make music. This is a question of great patience of the teacher and wish to involve the child in a process of play and creativity. Usually, when we mention musical school, we mean the school where children are taught to perform classical music. There are only a few schools where children play jazz, but in the school pictured by Vorobyoya, we can find two jazz ensembles. We watch those children playing on the “Jazz Parnas” festival. They are children of different ages and characters, but all gathered by their love for jazz music. They have their own conception of this non-child’s music that makes jazz composition sound fresh and ingenuous. Long and hard rehearsals are behind successful concerts.

It’s the story of Tatyana Agafonova, a famous Russian actress during the difficult period of Perestroika in Russia. The film heroine tries to take lead of the farm. Such a hard task in those tough economic and social conditions will not stop her optimism and hope for a better future.

Alla collettiva di fotografia si lega la mostra personale di Olga Chagaoutdinova. L’esposizione include una serie di ritratti fatti a prigioniere russe e una video installazione. “Prigionieri”, iniziata nel 2005 e proseguita per due anni, è una serie di ritratti psicologici ripresi in un carcere femminile nell’estremo oriente russo. L’intento del progetto era quello di osservare l’esistenza umana in un ambiente panottico e punitivo. Estese interviste con i detenuti hanno permesso all’artista di indagare la nozione di identità personale, praticamente estinta sotto la pressione e le regole del sistema penale. Questioni di genere e la soppressione ufficiale della sessualità all’interno del sistema penitenziario costituiscono un ulteriore aspetto di questo studio.

The solo exhibition by Olga Chagaoutdinova is linked to the parallel collective photography exhibition. It includes a series of portraits of Russian female prisoners and a video installation. The series “prisoners,” that begun in 2005 and went on for two years, consists of psychological portraits taken in a women’s prison in the Russian Far East. The intent of the project is to observe human existence in a panoptic and punishing environment. Long interviews with the prisoners have allowed the artist to investigate the notion of personal identity, virtually extinguished under the pressure and rules of the penal system. Gender issues and the official suppression of sexuality within the penitentiary system constitute a further aspect of her study.

‘Generations of Winter’ è una nuova interpretazione visiva di un romanzo storico, scritto da V. Aksènov. La repressione di Stalin e il tema del Grande Terrore sono stati presi come soggetto principale di una nuova risposta visiva. Le immagini e i nomi ricordano le persone che sono state represse, uccise o che sono morte nei campi di prigionia durante il periodo del Grande Terrore di Stalin. ‘Generations of Winter’ is a new visual interpretation of a historical novel, written by V. Aksyonov. Stalin’s repressions and The Great Terror theme have been chosen as the main subject for a new visual response. The images and names recall people who were repressed and executed or died in prison camps during Stalin’s Great Terror time. Erasing or disfiguring were one of the forms of falsification that Stalin’s system widely used. People have been erased not only physically during ‘Purges’, but also from our history and memories. SYNOPSIS

Un paese, un luogo, due uomini. Il racconto di un cammino attraverso l’Europa che accomuna due vite tanto distanti tra loro. Antonio Canova, celebre artista neoclassico, raggiunge la Russia degli Zar con le sue opere, ancora oggi esposte all’Hermitage di San Pietroburgo. Oltre un secolo dopo Giovanni Mussato, soldato semplice dell’armata italiana in ritirata dal fronte russo, intraprende a piedi un lungo e drammatico viaggio fino a casa. L’opera pittorica riunisce la storia di questi due uomini oggi su di un unico piano narrativo e nel luogo dove entrambi sono vissuti.

A country, a place, two men. The tale of a journey through Europe that bridges two different lives so far apart. Antonio Canova, the famous neo-classical artist that through his work, still exhibited at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, reached Russia at the time of the Tsars. Over a century after, Giovanni Mussato, a soldier of the Italian army retreats from the Russian front, began to walk back home through a long and dramatic journey. The paintings bring together the stories of these two men today, on a single narrative level and in the place where they both lived.

SYNOPSIS

Artista e profeta, editore e collezionista visionario, Francesco Conz è ricordato per il contributo straordinario che ha dato al Fluxus e ad altri movimenti d’avanguardia. Nate nel lontano 1972, le Edizioni Conz hanno costituito sin dall’inizio il principale motore dell’Archivio F. Conz grazie al quale molti artisti internazionali giunsero ad Asolo. L’installazione, assieme al Premio “Arte e Cultura” è un omaggio all’artista scomparso nel 2010. La mostra ospita un’opera celebre su tela di Hermann Nitsch e un’edizione speciale di Francesco Conz dedicata alla performance asolana di Nam June Paik e Charlotte Moorman.

Artist and prophet, visionary publisher and collector, Francesco Conz is remembered for his extraordinary contribution given to Fluxus and other avant-garde movements. Edizioni Conz, established in 1972, represented from its beginning the core of the Archives F. Conz, thanks to which many international artists came to Asolo. The installation, along with the 2012 “Art and Culture” Prize, is a tribute to the artist who died in 2010. The exhibition hosts a famous work by Hermann Nitsch and a special Francesco Conz’s edition dedicated to the performance realised in Asolo by Nam June Paik and Charlotte Moorman.

La seconda schermata mostra astratte linee energetiche selvaggiamente disegnate con la luce

“Still Life: London” explores a quest for stillness in a hectic world. Two screens project moving images with a piano score. One screen shows a personal collection of serene, quiet life objects, carefully chosen and composed, revealed at a contemplative pace. The second screen shows abstract energetic lines wildly drawn with light.

SYNOPSIS

Talvolta la gravità di un “pensiero” opera una pressione percepibile, quasi palpabile, sul nostro agire. La ricerca di Fabrizio Saiu è incentrata sul rapporto tra movimento e materia, che trovano sintesi in una gestualità silenziosa. Dinanzi al Tempio Canoviano, nell’ambito di un contesto storico e ambientale, l’artista lega il suo corpo con 54 piatti da percussione, per un peso di 70 kg e oltre 450 metri di corde.

Sometimes, the severity of ‘thinking’ applies a perceptible pressure, almost palpable, on our actions. The work of Fabrizio Saiu focuses on the relationship between movement and matter, which find a synthesis in a silent gesture. Facing the Temple of Antonio Canova, in a historical and environmental context, the artist binds his body to 54 cymbals, in all 70 kg of weight, and over 450 meters of ropes.
