10.DESIGN BRIEF

10.1 SEAFRONT BEAUTIFICATION AT ARNALA KOLIWADA

The tempest of rapid urbanisation as it has hit the urban villages on Mumbai, that is yet on the case with Arnala, but it can be predicted to be happening in the coming years. As there being time in hand to do about it today foreseeing the future.

The tempest of urbanization is in inevitable the brief expects Architecture to be the saviour of the cultural heritage and integrity of Arnala Koliwada

• Architecture to lift morale- Learnings from Mobai Museum

As one could question, can Architecture be the solution to help hold on to cultural aspects that a community inherits? Well, Mobai Museum by the initiatives of the East Indian Community has made it work for them to make a niche for themselves in the city and hold pride in their culture.

• Case Specificness- Learnings from Clay room by Andy Goldsworthy

Case specificness is the key for designing a for Arnala Koliwada. This project couldn’t be replicated as a prototype for solving larger issues of society. This case-specific character will uplift the morale of the community to fight their daily battles to grow together as a community.

• The strength and weaknesses of the Arnala Koliwada- Site and Community

Analysis

As the population density seems to be on the rise the Community has to find spaces out of the boundaries of the Koliwada thus

• Kolis know it better- Comparing the three Koliwadas; Worli, Diwale and

Arnala

By seeing patterns of planning Arnala Koli Community which are already in existence and effective over the years- Through Studying and comparing Koliwadas of Mumbai, Navi

Mumbai and Mumbai’s Suburbs.

Carefully looking at the housing typology the need for community life is seem but the lack of open spaces and the demarcated public make the people compromise their need to community lives. The design should carefully design for various other features and patterns of Koli living.

• Awareness about the Community’s Cultural Heritage through Tourism –

Learnings from New Sydney Fish Market

Arnala Koliwada is doing fairly well in fisheries and community life comparison to Worli and Diwale, But the coming years would demand more from this indigenous community

just Tourism would not only add value to this place just also generate passive income which would lead to the betterment of the overall community.

This seafront beautification project should thus be an important landmark for the Koli community and a must-visit tourist destination of Vasai-Virar region

• Local Material Familiar to the Community- Learnings from Jetavan Case

study

As over the years, the Koli community has shifted from the traditional architecture style to RCC framework structures with hardly any unique features of their own except the facades being painted with bright colours. There feels a need to develop a new architecture language for Arnala Koliwada integrating the contemporary feature with Virar’s traditional architecture language

Above learnings to be translated in design programs would consist of three main aspects spaces for the promotion of fisheries as fishing is the backbone of the fisherfolks, secondly Spaces for community gatherings and upliftment and finally, spaces promoting Tourist to visit the seafront and this new identity and landmark of the Kolis of Arnala.

This leads us to the prominent programs of the seafront beautification at Arnala Koliwada, shown in the diagram below,
