Foot from behind to win mile Reigning women’s champion Andrea Foot put aside an injury that has kept her from competing in the Games since Sunday to win her second Masters Mile yesterday evening. Later Brad White, running in his first Alice Springs Masters Games, comfortably won the the men’s race from Chris Hunter and Shane Cadan. Foot produced a surge with about 50m to go to run past Emma Kraft in the dash to the line. Andrea was in the hands of the Sports Medicine team and icing her aching muscles after the race. “I’m done. Exhausted. I put everything in and having nothing left,” she said. “I am really happy. I didn’t think I was going to run after getting injured playing touch for Spartans on Sunday. “I can’t turn so I haven’t been able to do anything because of the injury. “I wanted to compete in the Masters and the Mile was my final option, so I decided to run.”

Emma finished ahead of Fiona Coyle with previous Mile winner Cristine Suffolk coming in fourth. Despite coming fourth overall, Cristine came first in her age group providing her with her fifth gold medal of the Games.

A glitch in the system made the timing of the men’s race out but Brad won by about 30 seconds with three seconds between the second and third runners. Brad was the pre-race favourite but he was still nervous before the run. “You never win until you get to the finish line ... I thought I could give this a fair crack,” he said. “I have loved my first Masters Games. I have been up in the mornings helping with the water stations and finish line for the distance events. “The night sessions have been great too. “This is definitely not my last Alice Springs Masters. I will be back.”

Winners Andrea Foot and Brad White celebrate their wins at the Masters Mile finish line.

Tired and sore touch footballers have one more day to get through before relaxing at tonight’s presentation where tales from the week will be shared. With the men’s and women’s finals occurring this afternoon, it looks set for some close and competitive games in the various divisions. In the men’s 30s the gold medal will be decided between Whanau and Young Braves in a repeat of the 2012 final. The teams met earlier this week in a fierce competition with the game ending in a draw. The men’s 40s is heading the same way with the finals being played between Braves and Rats. Again these two teams could not be split in the rounds so this one could also go either way. In the men’s 50+ division, Colts and Geldings look to have the edge over NQ Living Legends. But the boys from NQ have been there and

done that so anything could happen in that game. The women’s division was so competitive it took until the games last night to determine the finalists. Young Squaws and DragonFly Divas appear to be the frontrunners for the finals but Whanau could still be in with a chance if results go their way. In the mixed finals played yesterday, the game of the day was Rats v Spartans in the M45/W40 division. The game was drawn at fulltime. In this situation each team loses a player every two minutes until there is a result. With numbers down from six to four per side, Spartans were able to get across the line for the win. Indians took out the other gold medal in the younger age division (M30/W30) defeating Spartans by three touchdowns.

The Alice Springs Turf Club is marking one of Australia’s most prestigious race days with a five-card race program tomorrow. Games participants are invited to let their hair down and make an afternoon of it at the Club at Pioneer Park on the South Stuart Highway. The Alice Springs Turf Club is offering free entry with gates opening at noon. The first

local race will be held at 1.27pm with the last scheduled for 3.47pm. The prestigious $2.5m Caulfield Cup at 4.10pm will be the highlight of the day. The Cup is one of the world’s richest handicap races over 2,400m and will be part of a 10-race program at the Victorian track.

Unexpected event may completely change Virgo’s current plans. Today even the most sober-minded and cautious Virgins are capable of losing their head and dashing after an elusive dream. David has been chief scorer while Linda has played. This is his first Games and her third. “I reckon we’ll be back in 2016 for the Games 30th anniversary and our second,” he said. “But I might have to take up a sport.”

telling tales from around the Games... The men’s cricket comp has a yellow rubber duck that is awarded to a batsman who scores a duck. He has to wear it around his neck until someone else gets a duck. The duck, who has been affectionately named Bradman, was ‘ducknapped’ by an unknown women’s team who then held him to ransom while sending photos of him in compromising photos – including one with him in bed, smoking a cigarette with a near-naked woman. The ransom demand was for the men to field a game in their jocks. They compromised and a couple

of them did moonies instead. Bradman was duly returned but the men think he has developed Stockholm’s Syndrome because Bradman seems to want to return to the girls. The chilly days caught some of the Masters Games’ operational staff unawares. Some are now sporting ASMG hoodies and have decided this entitles them to form a team. They’d like to see a rowing competition included in the next games. But there’s division among the ranks about whether they should be called the

Todd River Rowers or the Dragon Boat Rowers. Mountain biking up Anzac Hill is surely a feat of endurance. But competitors in yesterday’s race saw the funny side and dressed up in various costumes, including one who covered himself in yellow to look like Homer Simpson. There were a few super heroes and lots of wigs and colourful costumes too. The Sleuth reckons if you’re going to put your body to the test, you might as well have fun.

Yesterdays Winner Darwin quad biker Denise Troon shows them how it’s done

60 year old racer wins Gold Sixty-year-old Denise Troon has won gold in the four-hour motorcycling enduro - in her first competitive quad bike race. And she thinks she may have also snagged the silver in the flat track and short course and the scrambles. “It has all been so fantastic,” Denise said. “The main thing is the participation - it is so fantastic and why we enjoy it so much.” The Darwin woman became a Games convert after watching the swimmers in the 2010 Games.

She then travelled the 1,500km from Darwin to Alice Springs in 2012 to watch her husband Peter in his motorcycling events. Denise was so excited about the Games, the competition and camaraderie, that she bought a quad bike six months before the 2012 Games but didn’t feel confident enough to compete. But she came and watched, received a lot of advice from riders at the event and was inspired again. Denise bought a new CanAm 90 quad for these Games.

“My quad only goes 50km/h and some of the others in the field are on 450 quads,” she said. “But it has really performed well and I’ve had no problems. “I’ve been to watch the swimming and other sports on my days off. “I must give a big thank you to the Alice Springs Motor Cycle Club and everyone in it. “They’ve really put on a good show throughout the week. “We will definitely be coming back in 2016 for the 30th anniversary.”

Records were made to broken As Alice Springs Masters Games Patron Dawn Fraser is more than happy to point out, records are there to be broken. Only eight records from the inaugural Games in 1986 are still standing with an incredible 86 new records set in swimming and athletics this year. All the records set by Dawn in her years swimming at the Games have been broken - and she has congratulated the swimmer each time when she could. In the pool this year, an amazing 59 records had been set with swimmers still to hit the water for the 800m freestyle event yesterday. No doubt there will be more records to add after those swims. The record-breakers began on day one and continued all week. Leading the way has been Annie Kitto from Nedlands WA and Tubby Ramsay from Red Cliffs Victoria with six records in the 45-49 age group and 80-84 age group respectively. Penny Reid has added her name to five records while

Anita and Kieren Jon Lawrenson set four. Five swimmers set three records each including the Games oldest participant 92-year-old Trudy Bullivant. Across the road, there were 27 records set in the track and field athletics. Lynette Smith, 44 from NSW, was a big record breaker – setting six records in the javelin, shot put, discus, hammer, high jump and outdoor pentathlon. One of the records to fall, set by Games legend Monica Osborne, was beaten by four runners in the 70-74 age 100m sprint. Miriam Cudmore came in first to slash an incredible 11 seconds off the mark Monica set in the 2000 Games. Miriam set three other records – in the 200m, javelin and shot put. Charles Crowley, 81 also set four records in his age group. And with another 34 competitions across the 32 Games sports still to be played, there are likely to be even more records broken.
